HANOVER

Made a New Year’s resolution? Someone once said to me ‘it is not the direction of the wind that determines where you get to but the set of your sails’. My resolution for 2022 is to try and maintain a tolerant, empathetic and non-judgemental attitude towards others, to try to be positive and compassionate in the face of any and all scenarios that may arise in these unpredictable times.

GENERAL

From everyone at The BRIGHTONIAN we would like to wish all residents and businesses of BRIGHTON a very HAPPY NEW YEAR and a prosperous and healthy 2022.

Hollingdean & Stanmer Councillor News Hello all! I’ve now been in my role as a councillor for six months, and I am still getting to grips with all the aspects of the work we do! As part of my role, I am the Chair of the Corporate Parenting Board, overseeing the care of nearly 400 children in care in Brighton and Hove. It is such a privilege to be able to support that work, including the brilliant team supporting the amazing people fostering our children. If you feel that you have the time and energy to contribute to making such a huge difference in a person’s life, check out fosteringinbrightonandhove.org.uk Coming into winter, I really wanted to draw your attention to a couple of funds available to residents this winter. BHCC are providing extra support for households struggling to pay for food, fuel and other essential costs this winter. Support is available up until the end of March 22. Please do share with others too. If anyone needs help applying or more details, please feel free to get in touch with Martin Osborne, myself or any council officer. www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/benefits/ help-and-support/get-emergency-helpfood-energy-bills-and-other-essentials The other fund is the Warmer Homes fund for those who own their homes, but are on low incomes. The grant is means-tested and can be used to fund electrical and gas safety checks and repairs, boiler repairs or replacement loft and cavity wall insulation. www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/benefits/ help-and-support/get-emergency-helpfood-energy-bills-and-other-essentials

I also wanted to highlight the ward budget given to councillors to support their community. We have already allocated some funds, but if you have a project in Hollingdean and Stanmer that is looking for seed funding, please email! zoe.john@ brighton-hove.gov.uk On a personal note, I am delighted to let you know that I am expecting a baby early in 2022. Being a parent of young children in politics is really difficult, but it is so important that our representatives include the same diversity as our communities. The Green Party are always looking for people who would like to represent their communities; if you think that could be you, please do get in touch. Zoë John zoe.john@brighton-hove.gov.uk

A23 active travel improvement plans Brighton & Hove City Council has received government funding to improve the A23 and provide a safer, more attractive environment for all who use it, including people who walk and cycle, public transport users and drivers. The council has been showing detailed designs for Phase 1 of the scheme to residents of the area between Argyle Road and Cumberland Road, near the A23. Important features of the Phase 1 design include: •

a new segregated bi-directional cycle lane between Argyle Road and Stanford Avenue

improvements to pedestrian crossings near Argyle Road and Springfield Road

new cycle and improved pedestrian crossing points at the junction of Stanford Avenue and Preston Road

new stepped cycle tracks between Stanford Avenue and South Road

new floating bus stops at both Preston Drove bus stops - southbound and northbound

walking and cycling improvements to the South Road/A23/Preston Drove staggered junction

More information can be found on the One Journey Better webpage: brighton-hove.gov.uk/onejourneybetter/a23active-travel-scheme The designs will be revised to reflect feedback from residents, progressed to detailed design stage and presented to the Environment, Transport & Sustainability (ETS) Committee for approval in spring 2022.

An example of a floating bus stop on Lewes Road

Phases 2 and 3 of the scheme will undergo further development, engagement and approvals in 2022. Information will be provided on the One Journey Better webpage as and when it becomes available. Amy Heley, co-chair of the ETS Committee, said: “We’re working extremely hard to make travel and transport across the city safer and more sustainable for everyone and the A23 is a key part of that. Only by creating an infrastructure that better supports walking and cycling will we give residents and visitors the opportunity to make sustainable travel choices that will help us reach our goal of carbon neutrality by 2030.”

Preston Park councillor receives national award Preston Park ward councillor Amy Heley of the Green Party was given the Young Councillor of the Year prize at the 2021 Councillor Awards on 1st December. Amy is co-chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee. The Councillor Awards celebrate the contributions of local councillors across England and Wales. Brighton & Hove City Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty and independent councillor Bridget Fishleigh were also shortlisted for awards. The awards ceremony took place in London and the top prize of the night, for Leader of the Year, went to Cllr Georgia Gould of Camden Council. The winners were selected by a group of judges that included senior councillors and leading stakeholders from across the sector. Jonathan Carr-West, Chief Executive of the LGIU (Local Government Information Unit) who give out the awards, said: “During a time when our communities have experienced unprecedented challenges and pressures, these councillors are paving the way towards recovery.” A presentation shown at the ceremony said: “Amy Heley has led on the School Streets projects in Brighton & Hove which have made a big impact on children and parents taking their children to school. There were several schools which she managed to convince to sign up to try out the idea, volunteering at one of the schools regularly herself. She’s seen through a lot of changes in the local transport network, implementing cycle lanes as part of the Government’s Emergency Active Travel. “Implementing these schemes has proved controversial and unfortunately Amy has

been the target of some abuse, but she dealt with this with amazing resilience. As the environment lead on the country’s only Green Party-led council, Amy is as cool as a cucumber.” Chris Williams of local cycling campaign group Bricycles said in the presentation video: “Amy and her team have done amazing things over the last 18 months in Brighton & Hove for cycling, and as a community group we feel fully supported by them and listened to. They’ve got 100% behind Conservative policy on cycling which really shows that they think it’s a people exercise, cycling, even in the face of harsh criticism from some fringe groups.” Amy accepted her award on Zoom and later said on Twitter: “Really shocked and honoured to have won this award, and huge congratulations to all the other shortlisted young councillors who I admire so much.”

13 Advertorial...New nursery about to open its doors...

New Creative Nursery opening in the heart of Kemptown

KEMPTOWN

Nestled in the heart of Brighton’s vibrant Kemptown, Bloomsbury Street Day Nursery is the latest unique childcare setting from creative nursery pioneers Hove Village.

The new nursery promises the contemporary and desirable child-led approach and will be the perfect choice for parents looking for an environment where the focus is on free creativity classes, outdoor pursuits and learning through imaginative play. Bloomsbury Street Day Nursery is the brainchild of Hove Village’s Montessori-trained founder Kathryn Hyatt. Kathryn has many years of childcare and education experience and was the founder of the award-winning pre-school education company, Caterpillar Music, which taught up to 6,000 children each week across the UK & Europe. Every day promises to be different, with activities from yoga to dance, music to art, rugby, and other sports on offer. The nursery says that their aim is to curate a freeing environment in which a child will flourish, whilst allowing them to shine and excel with the support of their skilled educators. With so much fun to be had, the children at Bloomsbury Street will be sure to build up a healthy appetite, and they are in luck - all meals (breakfast, lunch, tea, and snacks) are freshly prepared each day by

the nursery’s own team of professional chefs. A delicious menu will be on offer, full of flavours both familiar and new that children, and staff, will love to eat! The nursery will be located – as its name suggests – on Bloomsbury Street, a delightful mainly residential road right in the centre of Kemptown. Located just 200 metres from the Royal Sussex Hospital and even closer to Brighton College, the nursery is in a very convenient spot. The building itself is unique, having undergone total redevelopment to create spacious, bright, and airy classrooms that are flooded with light. A team of highly qualified early years educators have been handpicked by Kathryn and have dedicated their life to caring for and teaching babies, toddlers, and preschool children. Every member is focused on making each day at Bloomsbury Street one to remember. Bloomsbury Street Day Nursery opens its doors very soon. You can find out more about the opening date and how to book a tour at www.hovevillage.com/bloomsbury

15 Lina Talbot reviews one of Kemptown’s oldest stores…

Kemptown store…Bedford Hardware Bedford Hardware was serving the needs of the Victorian households around St George’s Road in the 1870s, long before the Co-op or the neighbouring cafés – though preceded by such public houses as the Hand in Hand, of course.

Dean has worked in hardware for twenty years, and says it’s exactly what he enjoys doing. And you can feel that too, that he enjoys meeting you and solving your hardware problems, as does his co-worker Nicky. She rotates to Bryden’s, the sister lime-green-painted hardware store in Blatchington Road, Hove - but says she loves the Kemptown store for its friendly customers. A couple joined us on the pavement for a discussion, but at 4ºC – we checked with a thermometer from the shop – it was rather chilly both outside and in the “open door” store. For those like myself shopping locally in a wheelchair, a major problem is seeing all the products available. I did nudge that more frequent changes in the window display could be made. There is a website at https://www.bedfordhardware.co.uk/ contact-us which talks of an Aladdin’s cave – indeed! – but is not that expansive. However Google maps – and their col-

KEMPTOWN

And despite the new wave of Internet shopping, it continues to serve the homeware, hardware, DIY and gardening needs of Kemptown residents. So many were coming by on a Monday morning, would you believe, it was hard to get a decent interview with Dean, whose advice in matters ranging from mugs and candles to cleaning products and fan heaters is clearly respected, (he would recommend oil heaters). Demand for storage containers and garden compost rocketed as the cold weather arrived, and in January expected to do the same for logs and kindling.

lection of photos – provides far more info! You can see all the hidden contents there, and I discover I no longer need to get my citric acid from Amazon! There are news sheets you can sign up for – or read in the archive online, where I discovered the key cutting service. Let’s get this info more out there! As Dean says, hardware stores are here to stay, with the realisation during Covid time that home improvements are necessary and do-able oneself, especially with the fall in skilled tradesmen that now plagues the UK. And Bedford Hardware is also eco aware – selling Ecover cleaning and sustainable timber products. There shall be no more peat in compost! Lina Talbot Reviewed on behalf of local customers

17 News from the Sussex Heart Charity…

Defibrillator installed in memory of Kemptown resident The Sussex Heart Charity has helped place another life-saving Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to help safeguard the lives of local residents.

Richard Tredgett, brother, partner, friend and Kemptown resident, loved by so many, died suddenly of a heart-related problem on 20th June 2019, aged 40. His family and friends set up a fund with The Sussex Heart Charity in Richard’s name and, thanks to the generosity of donors, have raised thousands that the charity will invest in local cardiac services, including by buying and installing life-saving AEDs. The Sussex Heart Charity is based just a few hundred metres from where Richard lived, so for the charity to use the funds raised in his name to have an AED installed locally is an excellent way to honour this beautiful, funny, talented man, who loved his home town, and the full life he led in it. Terry Ayres, CEO of the Sussex Heart Charity, said: “We are very proud to have been able to help install a defibrillator

21 A year to remember for Queen’s Park and one to look forward to…`

Despite all the pandemic uncertainties, last year proved to be one full of achievement which has teed up an even fuller programme for Queen’s Park in 2022, writes Geoffrey Bowden, Chair of the Friends of Queen’s Park. A revival of our community events – first with Bark in the Park and rounding off with a glorious Carols in the Park last month (see photo), demonstrated the yearning of the community to come together after as lockdown eased. Both drew large audiences and, in the process, contributed to our fighting fund to support the maintenance of the park. It also December’s Salvation Army-led Carols in the proved the huge social value offered by Park, which attracted huge community support; the park to the community. I’ve written about our bid for funding from the Urban Tree Challenge Fund (UTCF) administered by the Forestry Commission. The project to plant 24 trees over the next two years kicks off next month on Saturday 5th February. Our growing band of volunteers will be invited to support the team from Cityparks to plant the first of the saplings and the result will be a longterm legacy for which we can all be proud. Our UTCF bid included the involvement of local schools and forms an important element in our strategy to nurture the next generation of park lovers. Two other projects dovetail into that too. We’re in dialogue with Sussex Wildlife Trust to conduct a wildlife audit of the park and we are also talking to the Changing Chalk Partnership (CCP). The audit will be a further chance to involve local school children in a project that should meet many curriculum objectives.

Led by the National Trust and supported by a £2.23m National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, CCP is set to restore lost landscapes and habitats, bring history and local cultures to life and provide new experiences in the outdoors. Friends of Queen’s Park will bid for a grant to create a chalk bank where wild flower pollinators can be planted – a long-term project ideally suited for young people and local volunteers. The final project, whose foundations were laid last year, is the refurbishment of the playground. We’ve worked closely with Brighton & Hove City Council’s Paul Campbell and Steve Hyder to develop the consultation on the playground’s development. That consultation, via the Council’s dedicated portal, is expected to open this month and last for six weeks. We will be encouraging as many of you as possible to take part.

Brighton College plans approved

Happy New Year. After a break over the Christmas period we have just one concert in January.

Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee, meeting on 1st December, approved plans for a new performing arts building at Brighton College in Eastern Road, incorporating a 400-seat theatre.

Margaret Fingerhut and Peter Fisher

On Friday 28th January we welcome back acclaimed pianist Margaret Fingerhut, this time performing with violinist Peter Fisher. They will perform a mix of French and English composers - Debussy’s violin sonata, Berlioz, Clive Jenkins, Malcolm Arnold, Delius and ending with Ravel’s dazzling virtuoso gypsy masterpiece Tzigane. The concerts take place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, Brighton BN2 9ZB, and start at 7.30pm unless otherwise stated. Tickets £7 / £5 under-25s / under-16s free. Disabled access. Wine and refreshments served. For more information, please visit www.musicandwineatstlukes.com or contact musicandwineatstlukes@gmail.com

An artist’s impression of the plans

The building will also include two dance/drama studios, a new sixth-form centre, classrooms, offices and a café. The overall height of the new building will align with the roof ridge of the main building. Ten objections to the planning application were received and the application had been deferred by the Planning Committee in October, as members wanted more detail on several issues including disabled access, the visual impact of the development on the wider area and proposed community use. A report to the committee said that the design was considered to be of a high architectural quality. It said the scale of the building would be considerable and would have a strong presence on the campus, but on balance the scheme was thought to be acceptable. The plans were approved by six votes to one.

27 A local business run by women…

Local business…Arka Funerals Arka Funerals have an office in Islingword Road. Cara Mair tells us more about the business. How long has Arka Funerals been running? We have been fully functioning since 2003 when we supported our first funeral. Our premises have changed, the team has changed and grown a bit since then but what is consistent is our ethos and determination to support people well. We are a small independent company; Arka is owned and run by women. We are unusual in the fact that we are mostly all on-call, so it could be me collecting your loved one in the middle of the night, and then meeting you to arrange the funeral; I may well be there on the day of the funeral. So a slightly different set-up from most funeral directors whose roles are more delineated. Also we have a real emphasis on the environmental impact of what we do; this has been the case since we were set up. We are constantly looking for ways to lessen the harm that funerals can do whilst improving the quality and creativity of our support. Have funerals changed much in recent years? I think the thing that has changed is the way that people are thinking about funerals. People are thinking a lot more creatively and focussing on their needs rather than what they think society expects them to do. I’m really proud that we have been going on about these issues for almost 20 years and inspiring people to expect more, to be more involved in the treatment of their dead. The whole industry is having to open up about transparency

HANOVER

What is different about Arka?

Cara (second from the left) and the Arka team

and also value for money; again, we really welcome this and think that everybody will get a better service if people are supported better and are more empowered when someone they love dies. Do you still have Covid safety precautions? We are managing this as best we can, it’s still a threat but all the way through the pandemic we have met with people in person if they can’t meet on Zoom or on the phone. We have invited them in to sit with their loved one, even if they died of Covid (unfortunately some people weren’t able to be there when their loved one died so we have welcomed them in to sit with the person). It’s still difficult, but we are determined to support people to the best of our ability no matter the circumstances. For more information, phone 01273 621444 or email info@arkafunerals.co.uk.

Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor News

My diary is packed with virtual meetings, but committees, Full Council and outdoor events are (currently) in person, according to guidelines. One such meeting was with the Beach Access Team, a group of active disabled volunteers. There is much to do, and we’re keen that better beach access is realised. Their vital contribution will feed-in to plans for an Accessibility Strategy, starting 2022.

Ward news: Residents have (rightly) increasingly complained about noise from student houses. Both Brighton and Sussex University representatives attended a meeting organised by resident, Lynn. Email addresses below (which I’ve permission to share) where complaints can be directed. For issues of rubbish and recycling at these properties, photos are helpful:

31 Sarah Gorton of Hanover Action on building a more sustainable future…

Our fragile planet... Reflections post COP26 I was part of a group from Extinction Rebellion that went to Glasgow for the first week of COP.

We wanted to be part of the pressure outside the conference to tell world leaders that we are watching them, we are dependent on them to commit to the right actions not next year or the year after, but now. We took eyes with us, representing the eyes of the world and symbolising that we are outside watching. David Attenborough introduced the conference by explaining that for 10,000 years the planet’s temperature has not varied by more than 1 degree Celsius and that is what has given us this unprecedented stable climate until now; he said this is not just a story of instability but a story of inequality. The global South, not having the high standards of living in a post-industrial society, did not cause the exponential rise in carbon emissions but are already living with the consequences – rising sea levels, drought, failed harvests, flooding, loss of homes and livelihoods. There was a powerful sense of that inequality in Glasgow - fossil fuel lobbyists, all 500 of them, dwarfed the official delegations from indigenous communities allowed into the conference. Representatives from indigenous communities, who have wisdom going back centuries about humans and the planet being interdependent, spoke to small audiences in

HANOVER

We were there because the catastrophe facing our planet, both extreme heating, chaotic weather events and the mass extinction of species, is now at a turning point; if our leaders continue to prevaricate and carbon emissions to rise humanity faces a precarious future.

fringe events outside the main conference centre. Their message, that we are all part of a fragile ecosystem, does not get heard when the narrative inside the conference is all about money. Despite the passion of so many people from all walks of life, world leaders did not commit to action that will keep the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees or less. So what now? Some people feel more disruptive action is called for and are prepared to risk their liberty for the cause; others feel we need to create a united front. Others are inclined to withdraw from the political sphere and promote nature and bio-diversity in their own area. If you want to be part of these discussions about how we work together to build a more sustainable future, Hanover Action is a local group working on these issues. We meet monthly, generally on the 1st Wednesday of the month at the Hanover Community Centre -but the January meeting is on 12th January - get in touch via our website: https://hanover-action.org.uk/ home/about-hanover-action/join-us/

33 News from the council…

Response Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund grants to cycle A new Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund grant hangar programme launched in December in response to the impact of the winter months and Covid-19 on the mental health and wellbeing of the city’s survey Grants of up to £10,000 are available to not-for-profit organisations delivering projects and services supporting mental health and wellbeing. A total of £60,000 is being made available for community and voluntary groups with an annual income of up to £2 million. This funding is particularly aimed at supporting people who experience social, economic and health inequalities. This includes people with a protected characteristic defined under the Equalities Act of 2010, people who are homeless or insecurely housed and people on low incomes and/or living in areas of high deprivation.

The council have thanked around 2,000 residents who responded to a recent survey on cycle hangars for Brighton & Hove.

GENERAL

residents.

Examples of support the council are looking to fund through the grants include: • counselling and therapeutic services • support groups and befriending services, including projects to help tackle social isolation and loneliness • projects that promote and raise awareness of positive mental health and well-being, including nature-based therapy and outdoor activities • mental health training and support for staff and volunteers For full details, visit the council’s Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund webpage at: brighton-hove.gov.uk/citysupport-and-grants/other-brighton-hove-city-councilgrants/grants-mental-health-and-wellbeing To request an application form, please e-mail communitiesteam@brighton-hove.gov.uk. The application deadline is 12 noon on 24 January 2022, with an expectation that the grant awards will be published in early February. Projects should be completed by the end of June 2022.

The survey was launched in October to gauge demand for 100 new cycle hangars for residents to safely park their bikes near to their homes where they don’t currently have space. The results are now being analysed and requests will be assessed against criteria before a shortlist of 100 locations is drawn up. The cycle hangar scheme will be rolled out in stages following further consultation through a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). It’s hoped the first cycle hangars will be in place early in 2022.

35 A request for volunteers from a local charity…

Time to Talk Befriending... There are many great charities in Brighton and Hove who need volunteers to support their work. We honestly couldn’t overcome loneliness without our 500+ strong team of befrienders! But in this current climate volunteer applications are slow so we wanted to share today what befriending means to our volunteers and scheme members in the hope that you might feel inspired to join us!

If you can describe befriending in three words, what would they be? “Enriching, enjoyable, fun (we laugh a lot).” What is your experience of the charity? “We are both impressed with how well Time to Talk Befriending is organised and very appreciative of your thoughtful approach with us all.”

How has befriending made a difference? “I didn’t use to care if I lived or died. Now I want to live forever!” We offer a range of joy-filled befriending activities for older people. Together with our volunteers of all ages we overcome loneliness. If you would like to join a community of people who care, we would love to hear from you! www.tttb.org.uk/volunteer / 01273 737710

An international day of commemoration…

Holocaust Memorial Day Holocaust Memorial Day takes place each year on 27th January to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution of other groups and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. 27th January marks the anniversary

of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. On 27th January this year, the Duke of York’s Picturehouse will be showing NT Live: Leopoldstadt, a film of Tom Stoppard’s play. It’s set in the old Jewish quarter of Vienna and follows one family’s story across half a century. The film is also scheduled to be shown at Odeon Brighton.

Brighton tigresses

GENERAL

Grrrr……! These are the ‘Brighton tigresses’, according to the register kept by the Argus photographer in April 1959. But there never was a ‘tigresses’ team, so that leaves us with a mystery. Perhaps these are the WAGs of Brighton Tigers or members of their very active supporters club?

What we do know is that the sports stadium, SS Brighton, was changing hands at the time, and the new owner, Nicholas van Slochem, had put up a new sign renaming it the ‘Brighton Palladium’. Perhaps these ladies were ice show performers in a different show, and part of a publicity shoot in his drive to encourage a wider range of entertainment at the venue? We may not know the context, but the women in the picture are certainly enjoying the joke and have dressed up in the full Tigers regalia, plus jewellery! The goalies might be holding their pads on, however! Let’s hope the photo shoot was before a match, not after, although the state of the ice looks as though it has had some recent wear! The image (ref ARG/3/7904A) doesn’t appear to have been used at the time, although two days after it was taken, on Saturday 18 April, the newspaper did feature a story on page 2, ‘What happens to Tigers’. This was a very bleak prognosis by John Vinicombe of the future of a game which, despite having been part of Brighton’s sporting calendar for 24 years, now

simply didn’t fill enough seats. The British Ice Hockey League was then down to four rinks – Wembley, Paisley, Nottingham and Brighton – and Brighton’s new owner was quoted as saying, ‘We cannot run things that do not pay their way’. Even Bunny Ahearne, the Secretary of the British Ice Hockey Association, said, ‘We cannot run a league on four.’ The article ends, in capital letters, ‘IF MR VAN SLOCHEM HAS NO ROOM FOR ICE HOCKEY IN HIS PLANS IT WILL BE THE DEATH OF SENIOR HOCKEY IN BRITAIN AND THE END OF A SPECTACULAR ERA IN BRIGHTON.’ Sadly, both local ice hockey and SS Brighton would come to an end in 1965, when the Brighton Tigers played their last match against the Paisley Mohawks. Although the Gazette carried a souvenir supplement called ‘Goodbye Tigers’, many of the stands at the event were empty. Despite the new owner’s plans for various alterations and extensions to the building, ice entertainment obviously did not pay, and the SS Brighton was demolished the same year. www.thekeep.info

The Cleaning Gurus Having heard the laments of friends looking for reliable, trustworthy and effective cleaners to no avail, Vesna and Evelina decided to take matters into their own hands, resulting in the birth of Cleaning Gurus®.

With a reputation for incredible service, Cleaning Gurus® used a variety of different cleaning products and chemicals to maintain their clients’ properties to the company’s meticulous standard. This began to concern our founders as their fantastic cleaning force were exposed to potentially dangerous chemicals day in and day out. The environmental impact of plastic packaging and solvent chemicals was also a pressing issue in the wake of climate change. Client surveys proved that customers preferred and wanted to use eco-friendly, non-toxic products, but these products were difficult to find in local supermarkets. Vesna and Evelina decided that the only thing to do was to, once again, take matters into their own hands and make the products themselves. In 2016, The EcoGurus® was born, with the first line of

41 Healthy living advice from health coach Siobhan McHenry…

Healthy tips to negate festive overindulgence It’s the festive season so, let’s face it, we all deserve to treat ourselves and a little overindulgence is allowed. To help negate the after-effects, here are a few tips I use and share with clients: 1. Start the day with a meal high in protein (less carbohydrate) eg eggs, spinach, mushrooms & tomato, or Quinoa (plant-based protein) porridge / bread and almond butter. A higher protein proportion will take the edge off sugar / carb cravings.

3. If you’ve consumed a lot on a given day – allow a 12-16 hour break between last meal and first meal the next day (includes milky, sugar drinks). This allows more time for your body to process and use consumption for fuel rather than storage. 4. Vitamin B stores, especially B1 and B12, are essential for breaking down food for fuel and important for metabolisation of alcohol. Levels can deplete with age (partly why hangovers seem to worsen the older we get) so ensure you have adequate levels naturally through good quality proteins and plant-based foods eg beef, salmon, tuna, legumes, whole grains, spinach, beetroot, mushrooms. You may also consider a good quality B Complex (containing methyl Bs in capsule form, not tablet). 5. Vitamin C – it’s important this time of year anyway, but if you are expecting

to consume more alcohol than normal, having 2-3 clementines / 1 large orange (not juice), one hour before your first drink will help increase the rate at which alcohol is cleared from the blood and may reduce acute toxic effects on the liver. 6. Hydrate in-between meals not during – it is important to stay hydrated in any event but it will also aid your detox organs and digestion (drinking too much during meals dilutes your stomach acid therefore making it harder to break down food). I can’t guarantee a complete avoidance of “food comas” or “hangovers” but these few tips will certainly take the edge off. Above all else embrace time spent with family and friends. Remember “it’s never too late to start feeling great” so a supported New Year reboot is also a fabulous idea (for more details please see advert on opposite page). Siobhan McHenry

2. Celebration meals – fill up on vegetables (not potatoes) and protein first. A higher vegetable / fibre content will help break down your meal, aid digestion (fuels your microbiome) and reduce bloating (not if you just eat Brussels sprouts!).

The BSUH Charity team were super supportive, and to run for the hospital that cared for my mother so amazingly during her battle with cancer was an honour.” Russell Goodwin, a Team BSUH runner from 2021 “As a family, we were overwhelmed by the outstanding support and dedication of all the staff at the hospital. You constantly find yourself thanking them for all they are doing, yet feel so inadequate and that ‘thank you’ isn’t enough. That is when I

STOMP returns to Brighton & Hove Multi-award-winning show STOMP is returning to Brighton & Hove to raise funds for The Old Market theatre (TOM). TOM will become the intimate home of STOMP from February to May 2022. The show is presented as part of a fundraising drive for the venue, and the run will also see members of the company provide workshop opportunities for schools, young people and community groups. Winner of multiple awards including the Olivier, Obie and Drama Desk awards, STOMP sees a troupe take everyday objects, such as matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms and hubcaps, and turn them into a percussive juggernaut of a performance. The Old Market is where creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas first collaborated and performed together over 30 years ago. Since then the show has toured all over the world and was also featured as part of the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony. It’s a perfect event for the whole family and a chance to see a global spectacle up close. The show is being performed as part of The Old Market’s “Gig for a Gig” scheme, where established artists support the next generation of talent by donating performances to TOM. 100% of the profits from the show will pay for new artists to perform on TOM’s stage in the future. The last Gig for a Gig event was donated by Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, in May 2019. With these performances, the show will also celebrate its 30th anniversary, and TOM will celebrate its belated 10th anniversary.

Co-creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas said: “This is all about giving back. We love this city, and we love The Old Market as it holds such a special place in our hearts. We want to do what we can to provide an injection of cultural energy into Brighton and Hove, and we also want to continue to provide opportunities for new artists to perform at The Old Market by raising the funds needed to ensure that TOM can carry on for many, many years to come.” STOMP opens at The Old Market (Upper Market Street, Hove BN3 1AS) on Wednesday 16 February 2022. Tickets start at £15 and are available from The Old Market Box Office on 01273 201 801 or via theoldmarket.com.

Coming up at Brighton Dome Kevin Clifton - Burn the Floor

Van Morrison

Kevin Clifton in Burn the Floor

Former Strictly Come Dancing favourite Kevin Clifton is due to be finally burning the floor at Brighton Dome on 23 January. The event has been rescheduled several times due to the Covid pandemic. After the sell-out success of the first ever UK tour of Burn the Floor in 2019, this fiery, energetic and revolutionary ballroom production will, once again, set the stage alight with a mix of eclectic live music, jaw-dropping choreography and ground-breaking moves. Feel the intensity of the passionate tango, be swept away by the romance of the waltz and be captivated by the sensual, alluring rumba.

London Philharmonic Orchestra In “Stormclouds and Spring Flowers” (29 January), the London Philharmonic Orchestra will play Debussy’s Printemps (Symphonic Suite) and Première Rhapsodie, Copland’s Clarinet Concerto and Dvořák’s Symphony No 7, conducted by Kazushi Ono, with Andreas Ottensammer on the clarinet.

Also at Brighton Dome this month (27 & 28 January) is prolific recording artist Van Morrison. The multi-Grammy award-winning Northern Irish singer-songwriter, who was knighted in 2016, has had a stream of hits such as Brown Eyed Girl, Moondance, Jackie Wilson Said, Have I Told You Lately and Gloria, and is still recording new music.

February shows Performers coming to Brighton Dome in February include Strictly’s Anton Du Beke and his professional dancing partner Erin Boag with Showtime, a glittering celebration that pays tribute to some of the world’s greatest icons of entertainment, including Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Tom Jones and many more. Also in February, the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing two works by Mendelssohn, including Fingal’s Cave, as well as works by Ravel and Fauré, with a 21-year-old virtuoso from Shanghai, Junyan Chen, on piano. TV documentary maker and presenter Stacey Dooley will be in conversation, following the publication of her new book exploring the mental health crisis in Britain and its impact on young people. Coming up at Theatre Royal Two Cigarettes in the Dark Two Cigarettes in the Dark is a new comedy by Stephen Wyatt coming to Theatre Royal Brighton from 4-9 April as part of a UK tour.

(Bergerac, Doctor Who), Michael Lumsden and Timothy Watson (Alistair Lloyd and Rob Titchener in The Archers), Natasha Magigi, Juliet Garricks and Hilary Tones. Fatal Attraction

When happily married attorney Dan Gallagher meets charming editor Alex on a night out in the city, they both commit to a night of passion they can’t take back. Dan returns home to his family and tries to forget his mistake, but Alex has different ideas. Dan’s about to discover that love is a dangerous game. The play stars Kym Marsh as Alex Forrest, Oliver Farnworth as Dan Gallagher and Susie Amy as Amy Gallagher. The Tiger Who Came To Tea

Bright, witty and fiercely independent, Isabel is not ready to let go just yet. In a series of encounters with an old friend and her two sons, by turns funny, startling and poignant, home truths are exchanged, and her past begins to emerge. As Isabel confronts her own hidden regrets and family secrets, we learn what hides below the surface of this proud mother, wife and friend. Finally, Isabel is able to make peace with her life and say goodbye. Dame Penelope Keith, renowned for her stage and television work including The Good Life and To The Manor Born, will play Isabel. She will be joined by Liza Goddard

A delightful family show is coming to the Theatre Royal from 1-3 February – a stage version of Judith Kerr’s classic children’s story, The Tiger Who Came To Tea. The musical play is coming direct from the West End and is packed with oodles of magic, sing-along songs and clumsy chaos! Shrek The Musical If you’re looking for a half-term treat for the children, there’s an amateur production of Shrek from 16-19 February, bringing the much-loved animated film characters to the stage in this uplifting story of a little ogre. Free tree identification guides Households in Brighton & Hove are invited to join thousands of people in coastal towns who are getting out and about this winter to learn more about their neighbourhood trees and how they can help protect the environment.

Residents of Brighton & Hove and nextdoor areas should register online by 10th January 2022 to receive their free guide to tree buds and bark in the post in the New Year. This will be followed by two more identification guides in summer and autumn about leaves and berries.

Residents receiving tree guides will join a community of like-minded people starting to study trees and help others. No experience is needed to use the guides, just curiosity and a keen eye. Residents receiving tree guides will join a community of like-minded people starting to study trees and help others. No experience is needed to use the guides, just curiosity and a keen eye. Each guide is filled with drawings and photos created by enthusiasts and experts to help residents learn about trees, their wellbeing and how they can protect them. Eco-Business Director of Field Studies Council Philip Turvil said: “The magnificence of urban trees isn’t fully revealed until you really get to know what species are growing where and how they boost our wellbeing by giving colour, shade, wildlife and so much more. The free tree

identification and care guides from the Field Studies Council will help Brighton & Hove households grow their knowledge and connection to trees they live amongst in their gardens, streets and parks.” The distribution of free tree guides is part of a new programme led by Trees for Cities to increase tree canopy cover in smaller coastal cities and towns. Over 55,000 trees will be planted across 83 locations in 7 coastal towns and cities. The project will engage local communities with nature through this transformational greening and inspire a new generation to plant and protect urban trees. The project is also part of The Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Local residents will be invited to get involved and “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. Registration for the free tree identification guides closes on 10th January 2022.
