Planning application for Brighton gasworks site A planning application has been submitted by St William Homes (in the Berkeley Group) to build a mixed-use development on the Brighton gasworks site, bounded by Roedean Road, Marina Way and Boundary Road. The proposed buildings range from three to twelve storeys, with 553 residential units, including apartments and townhouses, and 2,697m2 of non-residential floorspace. There will be a central “Green Link” for pedestrians through the site. The lowest buildings (three-storey townhouses) will be along the western boundary of the site. St William Homes say the development will regenerate an underutilised brownfield site. A number of positive comments have been submitted to the council, but there have also been a high number of objections. Some neighbours are concerned that the development is too tall and too dense, will overshadow neighbouring properties, create wind tunnels, and create extra traffic and parking problems. There are also concerns that development of the site risks releasing potent toxins into the atmosphere. One supportive resident said: “Looks good, well designed, and of an appropriate scale given this is an urban area and not a town, and good to know the embarrassment of the derelict gas site will soon be gone.” However, a resident of Arundel Street was concerned about the proposals: “I think the development is too big, the traffic around Arundel Street and Boundary Road will be horrendous, with no extra parking?? Not enough green space as promised, too high blocking light on the backs of our houses and increased noise pollu-

A computer-generated image of the plans

tion.” Another neighbour said: “Proposing buildings of this height so close to low rise housing demonstrates a complete disregard, contempt even, for the lives of existing residents in the area.” A resident of Sussex Square said: “Our chief concern is about the contaminated nature of the site and the prospect of the development causing respiratory and other illnesses which have resulted from previous developments of gasworks sites.” The Kemp Town Society have also strongly objected, saying: “The density of the proposed development is significantly out of proportion with all surrounding architecture… This will have a serious and detrimental impact on current infrastructure, quality of life for residents and visitors, and public health and safety issues.” You can find full details of the plans and comment on the council’s planning register at: planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk (search for application no: BH2021/04167).

News from Nancy Platts, Labour councillor for East Brighton…

East Brighton Park I feel lucky to represent East Brighton Ward with a beautiful park that offers huge open spaces combined with a gateway to wild walks across the South Downs. But when I was first elected as a Councillor the park seemed a bit quieter than it should be. The café was closed and it felt like the park could do with a little more love and attention. I went on a mission to make East Brighton Park a lively space, bursting with activity, that was well-maintained and welcoming for all. I started out by getting a few basics in place such as asking the Council to reopen the café and install bike racks. Meanwhile, I got to work on setting up a weekly parkrun which launched in December 2019. The event is completely organised by local volunteers and we meet every single Saturday at 9am for people of all ages and all abilities to walk, jog or run. It’s a great way to get fit and make new friends. And no-one comes last, because we have a Tail Walker whose job it is to do exactly that – although it’s not compulsory to dress up as an inflatable dinosaur! By 2020, we had a beautifully refurbished café offering wonderful food and a cosy meeting place as well as the all-important, lovely clean toilet facilities. East Brighton Café has become a community hub and the provision of picnic tables by the owners creates a friendly atmosphere and place to catch up with friends outside. Bike racks are now in place and I’ve bid for secure bike hangars too. My representa-

tions for Bikeshare bikes have finally won through and they can now be locked at the entrance to the park. We have new equipment in the children’s playground and I am now campaigning to bring the tarmac pitch and tennis courts back into use. I am pleased with the progress so far but there is still more to do. I’d like the park to achieve a Green Flag Award next time around and would welcome your support to do this. You can get involved by joining Friends of East Brighton Park Facebook group. At the time of writing our launch activity is planned for Saturday 22nd January 2022 when we’ll be planting 50 young trees. Come along and join in with all the fun in East Brighton Park. News from the council…

Alphabet Art comes to Black Rock An Alphabet for Black Rock is a unique artists’ commission designed to enhance the Black Rock area while work continues. In 2021, Brighton & Hove City Council commissioned 13 artists to create a unique alphabet of posters to reflect the nature of the eastern seafront and draw attention to the regeneration project. Unique geology The participating artists, who include illustrators, photographers, a traditional sign writer, graphic novelists, comic artists, a typographer and muralists, were nominated by local artists and arts organisations.

locally native plant species being retained and re-introduced to Black Rock as part of the rejuvenation project will be spelled out across the fence. Packs of the alphabet posters will also be distributed to local schools. Councillor Tom Druitt, chair of the Black Rock Member Task and Finish Group, said: “It’s been fascinating to see ‘An Alphabet for Black Rock’ evolve from the initial concept, and how each artist has reflected their own unique style and interpretation of the theme.”

Artists Maria Amidu, Hannah Berry, David Blandy, Nik the Brush, Atlas Easton, Hannah Eaton, Martin Glover, Daniel Locke, Fraser Muggeridge, Danny Noble, Wumi Olaosebikan, Simon Roberts and Martin Seeds were each allocated two letters from the alphabet, including two BSL (British Sign Language) letters, and asked to create designs that reflect the nature of the site, its unique geology and ecology.

Artists Katie Schwab and Alex May and Anna Dumitriu have also been appointed to create permanent commissions on the site which will be installed next spring and summer.

The artists were inspired by the relationship between the black rocks that give the area its name and their role in aiding the re-population of sea kale, whose seeds float out to sea and need to be smashed open on the rocks to kickstart germination. Using this visual alphabet, the names of

An Alphabet for Black Rock has been constructed using a wide range of techniques from cyanotypes exposed on the beach in Black Rock and developed using sea water, to collage and ink drawings on Japanese paper. The first posters have been installed along the walkway from Kemptown enclosures and A259 subway into Marina ASDA.

Lina Talbot finds out more about a community garden in St George’s Road…

Kemptown Corner a garden for every passerby… This strip of land alongside the pavement of St George’s Road, linking Sudeley Place with Eaton Place, has been turned into one of the most striking gardens in Kemptown thanks to one passionate local resident. Sue does all the planning, the buying, the digging and the lugging – and the community enjoys the result! After ten years working on the garden she has now named it Kemptown Corner. Sue may well have started on this project for her own pleasure - and to see if she could, since she hadn’t kept such a garden like this before. That’s now hard to believe. There seem to be layers of foliage, starting with a diverse row of shrubs along the back wall, including pyracantha with its fiery red and yellow blossoms. Then come sections of plants flowering now, coupled with others which will bloom later, creating delightful combinations of colour: the lemon Marguerite daisies, the violet-blue cranesbill, the purple Liriope - and of shape, such as the spurge and Santolina, orpine and Mahonia, with their unusual and striking forms. This continues to the fence and beyond, where delicate white salvia, lilac daisies and purple rosemary edge the pavement. Somewhere in there Sue may be spotted wrestling with a tenacious creeper or bent over a plant she is adding from seedlings nurtured at home. Extracting weeds, giving compost and water, deadheading and evicting insects (and occasional cigarette ends and drink cans - despite the refuse bin being close by). In the middle

stands the very old sea buckthorn, almost toppling over after decades of onslaught from north winds. The bird feeders hang underneath, usually with a group of happy sparrows hopping from branch to feeder and back. Access to food for pigeons is prevented by using tube feeders with perches too small for their girth, ha ha! Feeling someone should defend them, I asked “why not pigeons?” Because pigeon poop is a carrier of such diseases as psittacosis and salmonella, I discovered… All right then. Whether you’re on the way to the shops, collecting a Shared Bike, or battling with the parking machine, you can enjoy different views of Sue’s garden as it mutates with the seasons. Sue thanks all those who clearly appreciate her work, and recently gave so generously towards its upkeep. She now has a new array of plants for us to enjoy this coming spring and summer! Local music…

Music and Wine at St Luke’s We’re hosting two concerts this month. On Friday 11th February the Joss Peach Trio present Miles Davis. This fantastic trio (Joss Peach: piano; Terry Pack: bass; and Milo Fell: drums) will play a varied selection of tunes recorded by Miles Davis during his long career. And on Friday 25th February we have a cello and piano duo. Toby White (cello) and Ryan Drucker (piano) will be exploring the lineage of three French composers, performing Saint-Saens, Fauré and Nadia Boulanger (Saint-Saens taught Fauré, who in turn taught Nadia Boulanger). In addition, there will be the much loved cello sonata by Frank Bridge, whose writing was highly influenced by Fauré. The concerts take place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, Brighton BN2 9ZB, and start at 7.30pm unless otherwise stated.

15 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

Playground – Have Your Say QUEENS PARK

Echoes of My Playground By Line Monique Gauthier unknown to anyone down a convoluted secret path in a hidden corner of my heart it’s there and waits for me beneath a summer sun the playground of my youth and when quietly I listen I still hear how sweet the melody of children’s laughter

A child’s first encounter with a park so often starts with a visit to its playground. It’ll fire the imagination and leave a lifelong impression, writes Geoffrey Bowden, Friends of Queen’s Park chairman. Sadly, the Queen’s Park playground has been looking decidedly sad for some time now as it was necessary to remove dilapidated and dangerous equipment. On the upside the review also resulted in a major plan to refurbish all of the city’s playgrounds, including Queen’s Park’s. The Council has set aside £147,000 for the playground’s refurbishment. While that amount is substantial, in reality it will only buy a limited amount of equipment. For this reason the refurbishment will take place in two phases. The first will cover a substantial area of the existing playground footprint. Tighter and tighter central government financial settlements affecting all local authorities means that the second phase will have to rely on local fundraising. All of which makes it vitally important that specification for the first phase refurbishment is right and reflects, as far as possible, the aspirations of the local community.

The shaded area shows the footprint for the first phase refurbishment of the Queen’s Park playground

The council has been working closely with the Friends of Queen’s Park and members of the local community to prepare a consultation questionnaire. The outcome will influence the scope of the detailed specification going out to tender. The commissioners will be looking for a number of key elements other than the proposals for the individual pieces of play equipment. Of course, value-for-money will be essential, as will ensuring that kit is as maintenance-free as possible and made from sustainable or recycled materials. However, just as important will be the social value a supplier can bring to the delivery of the contract. This could result in a number of ‘extras’ which might go beyond the core specification. As we go to press the consultation has yet to open, but, when it does, it will remain open for six weeks. There’ll be widespread publicity to encourage as much participation as possible – so look out for posters, social media posts and information on our website and at https://www. brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/council-and-democracy/consultations. This will be your chance to have your say.

17 News from Labour councillors Nick Childs and Amanda Evans…

A happy New Year to residents. It has been a busy and challenging period with the backdrop of Covid. Despite this we are looking forward to making further improvements to the ward in 2022 and speaking up for Queen’s Park residents. Progress has been made in Upper Rock Gardens with councillors securing a new pedestrian crossing and works beginning on redeveloping the area in liaison with St Mary’s Church. This area is currently under and often misused for anti-social behaviour. Cllr Nick Childs has been working on the redevelopment of Black Rock, which continues apace with lovely new pine trees planted next to the halfway halt station, new seawalls built, and landscaping and planting almost complete. This will be followed by a new play area, toilets and cafés in the old reading rooms. This exciting project will bring the area to life and restore much of the lost biodiversity. Cllr Amanda Evans has been busy on the Madeira Parade Board. New traffic lighting, paving and cycle lanes have been installed along and architectural surveys undertaken for restoration to begin. The plans for the new outdoor pool are progressing well. We were delighted to secure a new fence for the Rejuvenation Garden on White Street. Residents’ original fence had been stored and then lost by the Council. The new fence has now been installed and will add to the great work undertaken by residents to bring this underused space back to life.

panding this to 17- and 18-year-olds. Tackling anti-social behaviour remains a priority and we were pleased to secure agreement at Council for a joint review with Sussex Police, the Council and Police and Crime Commissioner on this issue in the city centre as well as for a zero-tolerance approach on St James Street and Tarner areas. Our new drugs officer, proposed by Cllr Childs, has now begun employment, and is planning a drugs summit to bring the community together to discuss tackling this issue. Cllr Evans called for a review of the use of Valley Gardens Christmas Market and Fair following many concerns about the disappointing nature of stalls, high rents that discouraged local businesses taking part and also the noise and damage to the area. We were also pleased to arrange for new signage to be installed around the Tarner Children’s Centre after development led to a rather confusing and cluttered street space. New paving was also installed. We are always keen to hear from residents and you can contact us at nick.childs@brighton-hove.gov.uk and amanda.evans@brighton-hove.gov.uk Cllrs Nick Childs and Amanda Evans

19 An update from the Hanover Community Association…

Hanover Community Association Hanover Community Association (HCA) is the small charity that manages the Hanover Centre on Southover Street. The charity is run by a committee of voluntary trustees who live locally. A New Year and a ‘New Lease of Life’!

Brighton & Hove City Council, the owners of the Hanover Community Centre, have agreed to renew the lease. This will allow the HCA to continue running the centre for the next 25 years. The process was quite a challenge, and the trustees worked hard to negotiate the terms under which they must operate and maintain the building. However, it was well worth the effort, as the new lease provides a solid foundation on which to begin planning for the future. Despite the setbacks brought about by the Covid pandemic, the HCA has managed to keep the centre afloat; opening up when possible, with appropriate safety measures. As a result, we have been able to welcome back many of the regular hirers, and look forward to reviving community events, such as the ever-popular annual Hanover Beer Festival.

HANOVER

There’s nothing like starting the new year off with some positive news. In the December issue of The Brightonian, we hinted that there could be some on the horizon for the Hanover Community Association. The HCA trustees are very pleased to announce that Brighton & Hove City Council, the owners of the Hanover Community Centre, have agreed to renew the lease. This will allow the HCA to continue running the centre for the next 25 years. and advice. They would also like to thank Laura Prince from Coole Bevis LLP Solicitors for finalising the lease on their behalf, and Aman Johal for his work on the initial negotiations. 21 News from David Gibson, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove…

Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor News

Plugging it mostly involves increasing charges and cutting services the council provides. As I write, despite making several painful savings and increasing some charges we still haven’t completely closed this year’s large gap, but have planned enough income in future years to fully balance the books over a four-year period. As Greens we are pledged to working for greater fairness, environmental sustainability and protecting the most vulnerable people this presents a huge challenge! Our budget tries to hold to these three principles: 1. Fairness •

We are expanding support to those on the lowest incomes in the city, widening the reach of council tax discounted support and also freezing parking permit charges for low income households

Abolishing the bottom two scales of pay for council workers to both help low-paid workers who have gone the extra mile and further reduce the ratio of top-to-bottom pay in the council

Provides support to sustain accommodation and prevent private renters becoming homeless

2. Sustainability •

We will protect the levels of spending, doing what the council can to contribute to carbon neutral 2030

Investing in a Downland estate plan for the next generation which will be delivered in partnership with stakeholders and seeks to enhance public access, promote more sustainable farming and local food production, protect and enhance biodiversity and move the downland to become carbon negative

Investing in more tree planting, solar PV and insulation of council building

We are expanding community and pedestrian friendly “liveable” neighbourhoods, expanding covered bicycle storage and increasing visitor parking charges, encouraging visitors to the town to drive less and travel more sustainably if possible, keeping the air cleaner

3. Protecting the most vulnerable •

Expanding hardship support via food banks and emergency support funds

Using the 1% increase in tax allowed by the government to support chronically overstretched social care in the city

There is also a housing budget to set. As joint chair of Housing I have been working on a budget to compensate for the shortage of affordable housing in the city and to alleviate homelessness. The budget will invest more to expand the additional council housing programme and achieve more council homes at lower rents, put aside resources for works to make council housing more carbon neutral and we are also providing resources to sustain “Housing First” placements which are proven to be the most effective support for entrenched homeless people. The budget will only pass with the support of one of the other parties.

HANOVER

February is annually council budget setting and as I write this is my main preoccupation. Over the last 10 years of austerity the council has lost over £100 million in government funding. Initially this year it was estimated that there was an £18m budget gap to bridge on the main council budget.

23 News from the council…

Councillors have approved the final plans for the third and last phase of the Valley Gardens project.

Phase 3 of the Valley Gardens project will continue and complete the work to regenerate and improve this busy central area. An investment of £11 million pounds in Phases 1 and 2 has transformed the space between St Peter’s Church and the Old Steine, introducing new events space, wildflower meadows and trees, and increased footpath and cycling space to help improve accessibility. The Phase 3 plan includes: •

New separated cycle lanes, linking phases 1 and 2 of Valley Gardens to the seafront

Improved access for public transport, supporting more reliable journey times

An additional taxi rank near the Palace Pier junction as well as retaining two existing ranks

New obstruction-free (where possible) pavement design

New trees and landscaping

Sustainable outdoor event infrastructure

Improved lighting around Old Steine Gardens

Increase in parking bays for Blue Badge holders

HANOVER

The final design was developed following feedback received from an eight-week consultation in July 2020 where residents and stakeholders were given the opportunity to comment on details within the project. These included the location of crossings, cycle lanes, footpaths, bus stops, cycle parking, seating, public areas and tree planting. The council would like to thank everyone who took part for their input.

QUEENS PARK

Plans for final phase of Valley Gardens

A new junction to replace the existing Palace Pier roundabout, including direct crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists

Improved setting around the War Memorial

It is expected work can begin on the project later this year. Exciting times for the city Steve Davis, Co-Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “Phase 3 is the final phase of the project to connect with the seafront with a new, inclusive and sustainable infrastructure which will create a stunning new destination and travel corridor all the way to the Palace Pier. “I’m passionate about the Valley Gardens project. Not only is it supporting better and safer journeys around the city and helping to improve air quality, there are also new trees and lighting, and new public squares. These improvements mean it will be a much better space for our residents and visitors to enjoy.”

25 News from a local group…

Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods We are pleased to inform you that the Council has now appointed an Ash Dieback officer to deal with the disease affecting the city’s ash trees. We have contacted him to ask if he can carry out a safety assessment of the areas of our woods where we should like to get back to work as some of our glades haven’t been touched for almost two years.

Although we had to cancel our October work session due to the appalling weather, we were able to welcome back our volunteers the following month when we worked on the north hedge and reduced the height of the elm hedge running alongside Ditchling Road to encourage new growth for the white-letter hairstreak butterfly caterpillars to feed on. Sustained by panettone and mince pies in our breaks we continued this work in our December and January work sessions as well as laying some wood chip to cover the mud on the paths between the north hedge and the chalk insect banks. We will be laying more wood chip and there is still some work left to be done on the elm hedge as well as cutting back and removing the dead foliage of the wildflowers on the chalk banks. Remember, if you would like to join us, we now ask that you email us in advance as that helps us to be Covid-compliant as well as making it easier for us to sort out the tools and refreshments. More good news is that the Council has found some money to carry out repairs to the Easy Access paths running through Hollingbury woods. Most of this will be done by contractors but we will assist by cutting back some of the foliage by the access point north of the Roedale cottages in our February work session.

ready a member you will receive an email inviting you, but if not email us at info@ fhbw.org.uk or visit our website for more information (fhbw.org.uk). Signs of Spring are already here with snowdrops and primroses in flower and the wild daffodils are in bud so do take a walk through the woods if you can and look out for the delicate wood anemones and the yellow lesser celandines too. Some birds, such as the robins, have already paired up and the song thrush with its distinctive repetitive song is proclaiming its territory from the treetops.

27 News from Leo Littman, Green councillor for Preston Park…

Preston Park Councillor News It’s been a very busy few months right across Preston Park ward, but today I’ll be concentrating on what’s been happening, and is about to happen, in Preston Park itself. Let There Be Light

The Play’s The Thing Also in November, work started on a revamp of Preston Park’s Children’s Play Area. By early December, it had reopened to the delight of many happy children, thrilled with the new equipment. During the planning stage last Summer, some parents asked for more equipment suitable for very young children. City Parks Play Development Team hope to add such equipment as soon as they can.

When I was younger, Preston Park Rock Garden, also known as The Rockery, or The Rookery, was not only a great place during the day where you could relax, explore, or, if you were young enough, have adventures, it was also a beacon of light at night. Sadly, the lights haven’t been working for the last 15 years. However, back in November, the old, inefficient metal-halide floodlights were replaced with smaller, highly energy-efficient, LEDs. I am delighted that the Rookery shines out, once again. Cllr Siriol Hugh-Jones helping to plant the new fruit trees in Preston Park

The Life of The Cherry Blossom

Tree-planting has certainly not finished in the park this year. Friends of Preston Park have ambitious plans to plant 60 Japanese flowering ornamental cherry trees. Appropriately for Brighton, the name of the variety they’ve chosen translates as ‘seagull’! This is clearly a very popular The Fruit of Love idea, as residents and park users have To start 2022 with a bang, or at least some donated nearly £9,000 to make it a reality. Friends of Preston Park will be asking for strenuous digging, on the fourth of Janvolunteers to help plant the trees when uary, Councillor Siriol Hugh-Jones joined Brighton Permaculture Trust, Preston Park they arrive from the nursery. Not only will volunteers, and Friends of Preston Park, in these trees provide a beautiful spectacle in Spring, but shade in warmer weather, planting several young fruit trees, which, in a few years, will form a mini-orchard on and provide a source of early nectar for bees, and food for birds in Autumn. Good one of the park’s disused bowls greens. for people, good for nature. A real win-win. These trees were funded by donations from Friends of Preston Park and the three Here’s to a happy and healthy 2022, ward councillors’ ward budgets. 31 News from the council…

Celebration of women’s football Brighton & Hove, as one of the nine UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 host cities, is taking part in a National Lottery funded project to uncover the hidden history of women’s football in a summer of celebration of the game, its players and communities. In partnership with the FA, the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust joined a number of other organisations across England for the project which has been awarded £500,000 by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. It’s an important year for women’s football, as England hosts the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 and the Lionesses – the England women’s team - mark their 50th anniversary. However, the history of the game goes back a lot further than many might think. This year also marks 141 years since women’s football was first played professionally. Challenging perceptions The National Lottery funded project aims to challenge the common perception of women’s football being ‘new’ and change the nation’s understanding of ‘the English game’. For the very first time, information about every England player, captain, goal scorer and match score since 1972 will be researched, recorded and shared alongside the information that already exists about men’s football. Hosted on England Football’s website, the record will continue to be updated, ensuring future female players are part of the nation’s footballing story. The project will particularly explore the role of the LGBTQ+ community. Host city Brighton & Hove is one of nine UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 host cities, taking part in a fantastic range of community

events and celebrations this summer. Staff at The Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust are excited to work with local footballers, past and present, to explore, record and share the heritage of women’s football in the city. Teams such as Brighton GPO and Brighton Supporters Club were instrumental in the revival of women’s football in Sussex in the 1970s, changing attitudes towards women playing football, and paving the way for women and girls today to play football, both professionally and recreationally. Goal power! At the heart of the city’s offer is Brighton Museum’s major exhibition, Goal Power! Women’s Football 1895-2022, opening on 18 June. Plus, look out for costumed figures in the city’s Fan Zone during the tournament, sharing stories of women’s football from the past 130 years, and fun activities and thought-provoking events at Brighton Museum.

33 Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating 70 years on the throne…

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee On 6th February 2022, Queen Elizabeth II will have been on the throne for 70 years – longer than any previous British monarch. However, the main celebrations won’t take place until 2nd to 5th June, when there will be a four-day celebration of the Platinum Jubilee. The May Spring Bank Holiday will move to Thursday 2nd June and there will be an additional bank holiday on Friday 3rd June.

On Friday 3rd June there will be a Service of Thanksgiving for the Queen’s reign in St Paul’s Cathedral, and on Saturday 4th June, Platinum Party at the Palace, a live concert from Buckingham Palace, will be broadcast by the BBC. On Sunday 5th June local communities are invited to share their own Big Jubilee Lunch – for ideas on hosting an event, visit: edenprojectcommunities.com/blog/ the-big-jubilee-lunch. The application process for street parties is detailed on the council’s website. Also on 5th June, The Platinum Jubilee Pageant, featuring over 5,000 people, will take place against the backdrop of Buckingham Palace. It will combine street arts, theatre, music, circus, carnival and costume, and will also honour the collective service of people and communities across the country.

Charleston takes Brighton by storm A century since it put the jazziest moves into the jazz age, the Charleston is back, with a hip twist.

MyCharleston began in 2014; the idea was to make a film showcasing the city and its dancers. The film was picked up by a tabloid who mentioned it contained nudity and it went viral. 40 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

Remembering friends, May 1922 This photograph records a solemn moment in the lives of 80 or so employees of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. It was taken at Brighton Locomotive Works nearly 100 years ago, in May 1922 (ref AMS6650). The occasion was probably the naming ceremony for this 4-6-4 ‘Baltic’ steam tank engine, No 333. Its name was ‘Remembrance’, and it was the last locomotive built by the company before it became part of Southern Railway. Even more importantly, the bronze plaque on the engine, as well as its name, commemorates friends and colleagues who did not survive the First World War:

The men in the photo have dressed in their absolute best, probably a far cry from the usual overalls and rolled sleeves in the locomotive works. Some are very young – hardly more than 15 or 16 – while others from an older generation are wearing the by-now dated high collars and neckties of the Edwardian era. The sitters have crammed themselves into the camera view, each wanting to mark the role he had played in its creation and his respect for those who had died.

These were the days when individual drivers and firemen were matched with their own engine. According to the book, The Brighton Baltics, by AC Perryman (1973), ‘Remembrance’, when new, was given to Harry Funnell and the fireman was Horace Fleet. The book records that the ‘Baltic’ engines used over-large quantities of coal; this annoyed their crews, who could normally claim a bonus for coal they had saved after a run. On the Baltics the men would replenish their stores surreptitiously by hopping across onto filled wagons at Victoria yard and quickly passing over lumps from the top.

neering Exhibition at the Royal Agricultural Hall in Isfield in September 1931, Mr Alfred Funnell (possibly a relative of Harry’s), ‘was awarded a diploma and commended for his model of the Southern Railway Atlantic-type engine, Remembrance’ (Sussex Agricultural Express, Friday 25 September 1931).

After the lines to Brighton and Eastbourne were electrified in 1932, the Baltic engines were rebuilt to work between Waterloo and Southampton. Our ‘Remembrance’ was renumbered 2333 but kept its memorial plaque. The engines were finally withdrawn in the 1950s. None were preserved ‘Remembrance’ was the type of engine that but the memorial plaque is currently believed to be at the National Railway went into history among railway enthusiasts and model makers. 43 Nature-based and creative programmes to support young people’s emotional wellbeing…

The Wild Mind Project comes to Brighton The Wild Mind Project has brought its mindful and creative nature-based programmes to support the mental and emotional wellbeing of young people in Brighton.

A 2020 study from the Mental Health Foundation found that young people were consistently more likely to report stress, hopelessness and loneliness arising from the pandemic than the population as a whole. The Wild Mind Project also runs programmes specifically for the young LGBTQ community who face multiple inequalities including social isolation, barriers to education and employment and discrimination. As a result, they experience even higher rates of mental ill-health. According to Switchboard’s Covid-19 Consultation 2021, 86% of respondents in Brighton and Hove felt stressed/anxious as a result of the pandemic. 87% of 18–24-year-olds felt lonely or isolated, 24% could not access support when they needed it and 68% had considered suicide. “University College London evaluates our programmes,” says founder Berny Simcox, “and we are delighted that the data shows a consistent, significant improvement in wellbeing across participants.” The blend of nature, art and mindfulness is a successful combination. The human connection with nature is rooted in our evolution. The sounds, shapes, colours, smells and textures of nature all help reduce stress levels. Arts activities can provide a safe environment for young

people to share their views and express their feelings non-verbally. Peer support is another important element as one-to-one counselling often makes young people uncomfortable. “There is time to talk and share in a safe space,” says Simcox. “The Wild Mind Project can help young people create new supportive friendship groups that last beyond the life of the programme and reduce isolation.” Activities include mindful walks, conservation work and gardening, combined with creative sessions – painting, weaving, woodwork, felting and lino-cutting, plus open-fire cooking. “The programme has helped me see more of me and less of my disorder. It brought back my identity, as I remembered I have interests that I thought I lost due to my disorder. It helped me refocus on a task, activity or learning process and had a really positive impact on my wellbeing,” wrote a young person who attended one of the programmes. 47 Meet an up-and-coming tennis player…

Local tennis star…Sonay Kartal Tennis player Sonay Kartal is from Brighton and is a member of the Pavilion & Avenue Tennis Club in The Droveway, Hove. At 20, she has recently won her first professional title, the UK Pro League Championship, and is now playing on the ITF Pro Circuit. What part of Brighton do you come from? I have lived and grown up in Saltdean. What is it like playing on the ITF Pro Circuit?

You have grown up alongside US Open champion Emma Raducanu – has her success inspired you? I think her success at the US Open inspired a lot of people, including her peers who grew up playing junior tournaments against her, which is myself included. I think it really put into perspective that dream we all have of winning a grand slam - it really is achievable. What are your memories of playing Emma growing up? My memories of playing against Emma go from the ages of around 9-13; we grew up playing each other in British nationals. It always seemed to turn out we’d meet in the finals and almost alternate between who won on that occasion.

Who is the best player you have played against? I recently came back from Tunisia and played a girl called Ayumi Morita from Japan in the final. It was probably my best and toughest win; she had a career high of being 40 in the world a couple of years back so she definitely had a lot more experience than me. That I would say is my best win to date. What are your hopes for 2022? My goals for this year are to end the year being inside the world’s top 350. I’ve recently won a couple of ITF 15k tournaments so I’d like to try and do the same in some 25k tournaments.

49 News of a council survey…

Safety of women and girls Brighton & Hove City Council are carrying out a survey investigating how safe women and girls feel in Brighton & Hove.

Your responses will inform the development of a new Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) strategy for the city, looking at how all services work together to make Brighton & Hove safe for everyone. This follows the launch of the new national ‘Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy’ in July last year, which includes a strong emphasis on safety in public spaces. The VAWG strategy will also sit beside the new Sussex-wide domestic abuse accommodation and support strategy. Violence against women and girls The term ‘Violence Against Women and Girls’ covers a range of serious violent crime types that disproportionately affect all females. These include: domestic abuse; sexual violence including rape; sexual exploitation; sexual harassment; stalking; ‘honour-based’ violence (HBV); forced marriage; faith-based abuse; female genital mutilation (FGM) or cutting; forced prostitution and human trafficking; violence against all women and girls in public spaces; online violence. The survey is focused on the experiences of anyone over the age of 16.

They would like to hear the views of anyone who lives, studies or works in Brighton & Hove, including all men and boys, on any experiences of these violent crimes. The survey is open until Sunday 20 February. You can find it at: https://consultations.brighton-hove.gov. uk/neighbourhoods-communities/vawgin-bh-survey/ All information will be strictly confidential. If you’d prefer not to respond to a particular question, you’ll be able to move onto the next one. No responses will be traced back to any individuals. Tackling violence

GENERAL

Marilyn Stafford was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1925. Her photography career got off to a remarkable start when she was invited, as a young woman, to take stills of Albert Einstein. Since then, she has accumulated an eclectic body of work, spanning the years from 19481980, including further portraits of famous and influential figures such as Edith Piaf, Mulk Raj Anand, Indira Gandhi, Albert Finney, Twiggy and Joanna Lumley. She has also photographed many ordinary people like the illiterate Sicilian peasant woman, Francesca Serio, who took the Mafia to trial for murdering her son.

57 Brighton news…

New sculpture on Circus Street “A Spring in Your Step” is a new sculpture by British artist Alex Chinneck, unveiled on 20th December at a new event space in Circus Street. Photo by Marc Wilmot

It’s a 25-metre spiral staircase made from galvanised steel which springs apart in three directions, occupying the full height of a key architectural elevation at the heart of the square. The artwork was conceived in direct response to the location and seeks to contribute to the energetic creative atmosphere envisaged for it.

Best known for creating ambitious public sculptures on an architectural scale, Alex Chinneck has previously been invited to create flagship projects for London Design Festival and Milan Design Week. Past projects include a sliding house in Margate; a hovering stone building on Covent Garden Piazza; an inverted electricity pylon on Greenwich Peninsula; and an unzipping building in Milan. Uniting the disciplines of art, design and architecture, Alex’s work challenges our understanding of familiar objects and materials to create surreal sculptures that transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Brighton Half-Marathon This year’s Brighton Half-Marathon will be run on Sunday 27th February. It’s the 32nd year of the race, organised by local charity The Sussex Beacon who support a specialist HIV care centre in Brighton. It’s now one of the largest running events in the south-east. The race begins and ends at 9am, close

to the Steve Ovett statue on Madeira Drive. The route loops along the seafront between Roedean School in the east and Hove Lagoon in the west. There will be some road closures on the day see brightonhalfmarathon.com.

Commenting on the sculpture, Alex Chinneck said: “A Spring in Your Step took three years to complete, weighs four tonnes, is 25 metres tall, and follows a non-repeating, expanding and contracting helical form - making it my most complex sculpture to date.”

59 A new play coming to Theatre Royal in June…

Michelle Collins to star in Cluedo Was it Miss Scarlett, with the revolver in the dining room…? Actress Michelle Collins, star of EastEnders, Coronation Street and 2000 Acres of Sky, is to star as the iconic Miss Scarlett in the UK tour of the new play Cluedo. Based on the classic Hasbro detective board game loved by generations and the hit 1985 Paramount film CLUE, the brand new comedy thriller heads to Theatre Royal Brighton from Monday 13 – Saturday 18 June 2022.

When Miss Scarlett, Professor Plum, Mrs Peacock, Reverend Green, Mrs White and Colonel Mustard arrive at a country house one dark and stormy evening, they are surprised to find they have all received the same intriguing invitation from Lord Boddy. It soon becomes clear that they all have something to hide as the mystery and hysteria grow and the inhabitants and guests of Boddy Manor are killed off one by one, with a variety of familiar weapons, leaving everyone to wonder, who will be next! This hilarious spoof of a thriller will keep you guessing right up to the finale as both the guests and audience try to work out whodunnit…. with what... and where! Just like the game, this UK premiere production promises audiences of all ages a nostalgic, fun and thrilling evening of entertainment.

GENERAL

Michelle Collins said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the cast of Cluedo. It’s such an iconic game and I remember how much I loved playing it with my cousins when we were younger. I’m delighted that it’s being brought to the stage – and having really enjoyed reading the script, I’m sure audiences across the UK will love it.”

an iconic character and we could not be happier to have Michelle starring as Miss Scarlett in Cluedo. Both the game and Clue the movie are much loved by all ages, so it’s a privilege to bring this new play of Cluedo to the UK stage and it could not be in more suitable hands than our director, Mark Bell. He certainly knows how to deliver a night full of great fun and entertainment!” Tickets are available at atgtickets.com/ brighton or phone 0844 871 7615
