4 Meet one of the owners of The Kindness Co-op in St George’s Road…

Kemptown person…Lucie Carr Lucie Carr lives in Kemptown. With her friend Charlie Williams, she runs The Kindness Co-op, a clothing and accessories shop at 74 St George’s Road. They make a donation to the YoungMinds charity for every piece of ownbrand merchandise they sell. How did you come to set up The Kindness Co-op? We’ve both faced difficulties in our lives Charlie was diagnosed with breast cancer a week after her son’s first birthday and I have had to cope with mental health issues (subsequently diagnosed as anxiety and OCD) since I was a child. During these times we have both been shown such kindness that coming up with a theme for our brand was very simple - we wanted to pay it forward. We really believe in kindness and feel that we should model the kindness that we want to see in the world. What do you sell? We sell kids and adults apparel, as well as some accessories and lifestyle gifting, all with kindness messages on them. The garments are hand screen printed locally in Hove, on organic cotton materials. Nobody’s perfect, but we try to be as sustainable as possible. What is your most popular item? Our kids earth t-shirt is our best seller. It’s a great, unisex design with a very apt message - ‘Be kind to our planet’. It was designed by the illustrator Susie Hammer after we briefed her on the look we were after. She did a great job and we’re incredibly proud of the finished design. Why did you decide to donate some of your profits to YoungMinds? It was my experience with mental health that led us to YoungMinds. Mental health awareness hardly existed when I was younger. Charities like Young Minds have

Lucie (right) and Charlie

done a brilliant job of bringing it into the forefront and therefore helping children and adolescents at the same time. Now more than ever, especially in the current crisis, this is invaluable. How is business at the moment? We’ve been so lucky to keep going. Online orders have been reasonably steady, so despite our concession in the BA i360 gift shop being shut and the retail stockists we supply being closed, we have managed to stay afloat! We even opened our little shop in Kemptown just before the November lockdown which has been brilliant (when it’s been allowed to open of course!) and have really enjoyed meeting and chatting to customers. across the hospitals, by sending Valentine’s cards. The public can support this via two routes: 1.

Get creative! Make and send your own Valentine’s card to the charity for the NHS (post or e-mail). We will then share these with staff.

2.

Get selective! Choose one of our card designs that we will print and share on your behalf.

The cards are general messages of love and support to BSUH staff as a whole, rather than individuals. We will share it with staff and patients across all of our hospitals. It’s time for an ‘injection’ of love and warmth and we’d love as many local people to be involved as possible. We would like to remind staff that people really care and value them. There is no charge, but if you would like to make a donation to BSUH Charity Covid-19 campaign (www.justgiving.com/campaign/ helpbsuh) that would be very welcome. This will help us to look after the long-term wellbeing of NHS staff working to keep us safe during this pandemic. Also, please do share work in progress images as you make your cards, so we can share on our social media channels. Send cards to: BSUH Charity, Royal Sussex County Hospital, C/O Post Room, Eastern Rd, Brighton, BN2 5BE Email us to request one of our cards at: bsuh. charity@nhs.net Deadline for receiving cards: Tuesday 9th February We can’t wait to see them! Thank you.

Rock Place new flats...

Councillors for Kemptown

The council has approved a plan to redevelop 11-12 Rock Place, replacing the existing buildings with a 2/3 storey mixed use development of co-working spaces with flats above.

Queen’s Park ward Nicholas Childs (Labour) Nicholas.Childs@brighton-hove.gov.uk Tel: 07562 437628 Amanda Evans (Labour) Amanda.Evans@brighton-hove.gov.uk Tel: 07562 437629 Clare Rainey (Green) Clare.Rainey@brighton-hove.gov.uk 07562 437626

East Brighton ward

The proposed development

The new development will replace a one-storey vacant vehicle repair garage and a two-storey vacant car dealership. The application received support from the Regency Society and ward councillor Clare Rainey. However the Conservation Advisory Group objected as they said there was a “failure to appreciate the scale and simplicity of the old stables and workshops, being the last visible signs left in Rock Place of the latter part of the 18th century” and the proposals would visually harm the Conservation Area. A council report said, though, that the proposal was considered to preserve the character and appearance of Rock Place.

9 Your local representatives...

10 Daren Kay’s first novel has a very apt title for our magazine…

Queen’s Park person…Daren Kay Daren Kay is a copywriter and community curator of the Queer the Pier exhibition at Brighton Museum. He has just published his first novel, The Brightonians. Why did you decide to write a novel? I really missed writing! As I climbed the corporate ladder of advertising, I became increasingly distanced from the thing that attracted me to it in the first place. In semi-retirement, I finally have the time to write about something more meaningful to me than margarine and motors. What is your book about? In essence, the rivalry that fuels the lives of a group of Brightonians. Already vying for supremacy of their circle, when one of them discovers a fifty-year-old letter belonging to a local drag queen, their sparring is taken to new heights. Initially leading them to the saucier side of 60s Brighton, what they ultimately discover is even more shocking; linking one of them to the past in ways no-one could have imagined. Which parts of Brighton feature in the novel? Pretty much all of it. From Hove Museum to St Mary’s, Palace Pier up to Woodvale Cemetery. But with most of the characters living in the city’s gay quarter, I’m thrilled to have consent to feature specific shops and bars in St James’s Street like Nice ‘n’ Naughty and The Queens Arms. And influenced by research I did for Queer the Pier, I also mention places that now exist in memory alone. Are any of the characters based on Brightonians you know? More of a combination of people, really. The adman, whose job title is Head of Sexy Thinking, is based on me. And the church dog, Mr Ben, is inspired by a

Daren with one of his novel’s characters

similarly grumpy hound that belonged to a friend of mine. But the social competitiveness at the heart of the novel is, I think, something that most Brightonians will recognise. If not in themselves, certainly in their friends! Do you have any more novels planned? Absolutely. The next instalment is called Brightonians Under Siege and takes place during the current pandemic with flashbacks to the 1980s, when Brighton’s LGBTQ+ community was in the grip of another deadly virus. The Brightonians will be available in bookstores and online from the end of February and to pre-order now at www.darenkay. com – where you can also find out more about the characters. Subscribe to Daren’s mailing list before 14/02/21 for a chance to win one of 5 free copies.

12 News from Labour councillors Nick Childs and Amanda Evans…

Councillor News for Queen’s Park... New Funding for Ward Playgrounds:

Carlton Hill School Crossing Petition:

After months of lobbying, funding has been secured for our ward playgrounds. The refurbishment, including new equipment, will begin in 2021/22. This includes £146,000 for Queens Park; £60,000 for Tarner Park; and £75,000 for the Kingswood and Milner.

We ran a petition with parents calling for a crossing and traffic calming on Carlton Hill. There have been several accidents and near misses on the road. The petition was submitted to Committee in January.

Assistance for local businesses during pandemic:

Cllr Childs presented a petition to the December ETS Committee for a crossing and traffic calming and secured agreement for a report into the options for the road. He also secured agreement for a review of citywide traffic calming criteria that ridiculously require there to be accidents before action is taken.

The Council has paid millions in grants to local businesses, but many have not yet claimed. This January additional grants have been announced. Businesses need apply only once to be assessed for various grants. Visit www.brighton-hove. gov.uk/coronavirus-covid-19/businesses-and-employers

Following appeals from the school we organised and submitted a petition in January calling for a school road closure order. We are asking the Council to take urgent action to keep children safe and follow the great example at St Luke’s School. Keep Prince’s Street Pedestrianised: Agreement was obtained following a petition and representations to the ETS Committee in December to look at options to continue traffic restrictions on Prince’s Street after a vigorous local campaign we supported. Improvements to Ashton Lodge: We worked with Lloyd Russell Moyle MP to address resident concerns about drug related anti-social behaviour. We secured agreement to gate the footpaths to the south of the block and one by the Children’s Centre. We have secured funding to

have the car park fenced and stairs gated and low fencing along the front of the flats. A new multi-coloured fence was installed by the Children’s Centre recently. CCTV at Pepper Pot Bins: Following concerns about the state of the bins, we were pleased CCTV was installed to catch fly tippers. A number of penalty notices have now been issued. More regular collections of the clothes bank and bins were also agreed. We continue to push for another carton bin as this is often overflowing. Going forward: We always want to hear from residents and advocate for our ward. Get in touch and let us know what you think our priorities should be and how we can help. 15 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

A lockdown upside is our heightened appreciation of the natural environment, writes Geoffrey Bowden, Chair of the Friends of Queen’s Park. For those taking their daily exercise in Queen’s Park there’s plenty to appreciate, so this month I’m putting the Wild Garden under the spotlight and have turned to Chris Lowe, Vice-Chair of the Friends of Queen’s Park and our longest serving committee member, to fill me in on the history of the space and examine some of the challenges.

The Great Storm of 1987 was the catalyst for the creation of a space where wildlife could be left to flourish. “The Great Storm of 1987 was the catalyst for the creation of a space where wildlife could be left to flourish,” Chris told me. “Many elms and beeches were uprooted and the man-made landscape was significantly altered. “Attempting to turn back the clock to restore the park to its previous condition must have looked like an expensive non-starter. Happily, a better appreciation of natural habitats led to the creation of a space, which at the time was dubbed The Butterfly Bank.” Volunteers from the newly-formed Friends of Queen’s Park worked with council ecologists to plant shrubs and flowers designed to attract butterflies, as well as, later, hazel whips to mimic hazel coppices found in the Sussex Weald. A management plan, initiated by a past Friends stalwart, led to the introduction of medicinal herbs and facilities for picnickers and, along the way, the space was re-christened the Wild Garden.

Wildlife certainly flourished to such an extent that a family of badgers, normally shy nocturnal creatures, established a sett there. Chris Lowe, a keen photographer, has been recording the widest variety of bird life visiting the garden over the years too – many can be seen on our website: www.fqpbrighton.net However, allowing blackberries, brambles and red campion to run rampant can lead to the exclusion of other plant life. While overhanging trees, such as elder, blocking out light will kill off grasses and leave the space a muddy quagmire. Annual supervised cut back sessions have given volunteers and local school children an opportunity to get stuck in. For the moment COVID has put paid to that and health and safety concerns have prevented the use of ride-on mowers on steep slopes to keep the paths clear. Restrictions will ease and, when they do, we’ll need volunteers to help manage the Wild Garden again. Visit our website or Facebook page to find out how to get involved. Mea culpa: Last month I gave honourable mentions to our newly-elected FoQP committee members but inadvertently omitted Jerome Hansen, who was also elected.

17 News from St John’s School and College in Walpole Road…

We are excited to announce that we have now officially launched our COVID-19 on-site testing centres for colleagues and children and young people. We are a specialist education provision for young people with learning disabilities and autism. Our keyworker colleagues have worked throughout the pandemic and we are incredibly proud of them. Our CEO, Simon Charleton (BEM), had been appointed as our ‘Vaccination Champ’ for the organisation. He is undergoing training as we speak and will be leading on helping the NHS in Sussex communicate about the COVID-19 vaccine within our charity. Simon reported that he was “very impressed by the professionalism of the testing stations and the professionalism of the staff”.

We have two testing sites – one at our college in Brighton and one at our school in Seaford. Our helpful estates team, Director of Operations and Head of Learner Services have worked hard to ensure the sites are clean, appropriate, efficient and COVID-19 safe. The pressure was on during the quick turnaround in setting these testing stations up so we could not be prouder of their hard work.

Other colleagues, across both sites, commented that the process was “smooth and straightforward”, “efficient, easy and clean”. “The HCA told me how to do it, calmed me down and put me at ease. I felt proud and not embarrassed afterwards.” “I was a little nervous, but staff were reassuring and friendly and the process much easier than I anticipated.” Amongst other positive feedback, we have received nothing but good words on those who have already undergone testing. Thank you to all who have made this possible within our organisation!

We are delighted to welcome three new colleagues to join us to manage the COVID-19 testing process within our education department and our social care provisions. We have also recruited two internal colleagues for the Healthcare Assistant COVID-19 roles, which has certainly helped the launch go smoothly. Have a local editorial item? 19 An update from the Hanover Community Association…

Hanover Community Association

2021 started a bit slowly at the Centre as we have been forced to close the doors once more. However, looking back over the past year, there are things we have been able to do, even with restrictions in place. Although the Centre was closed, the garden was kept open. Our volunteer Garden Group of Ross, Jan and Jill maintained it for local residents to enjoy, including the wildlife! We hosted caterpillar hunts, grow your own tree, and make a decoration for the garden. The absence of people provided the opportunity to do internal renovations which we would not have been able to carry out so easily while open, such as sprucing up areas with a coat of paint and decluttering the loft. It also allowed us time to ensure the building was ready and safe for return to business as soon as possible.

dren alike. We are aiming to have something on before and after lunch three days a week. As the spaces are greatly reduced this allows more options on set days. Hopefully all these activities - music and dance based as well as unstructured play for pre-schoolers - will be able to return as soon as we are allowed to re-open.

HANOVER

Hanover Community Association (HCA) is the small charity that manages the Hanover Centre on Southover Street. The charity is run by a committee of voluntary trustees who live locally.

Over the Christmas period we opened the Centre specifically to help and enable other charities with their festive support. This was the first year we participated in the Hanover Advent Calendar event with a ‘stained-glass window’ depicting the area. We extended the event into the garden, inviting residents to make or bring baubles to decorate the trees. In fact, they catch the winter sun so well, they may stay up for a while longer! For the short time when the Centre was open, we welcomed and assisted local organisations and hirers to run their events. The HCA is particularly grateful to a number of ‘regulars’ who continued to support us even whilst they were not able to hold their classes. We had been busy expanding the toddler-based groups, all of whom were much needed for parents and chilHave a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

23 A local project brings art to Phoenix Estate residents during the pandemic…

Up My Street... Phoenix Art Space in Waterloo Place joined forces with Hyde and the Phoenix Community Association to promote community arts to residents on the Phoenix Estate. Together they launched a partnership project called Up My Street in late 2019, as they wanted to find ways of working together to enable positive change for residents living on the estate and surrounding area. They opened their premises to offer a friendly space for families to drop in and explore, play and try something new, even if they’d never been interested in art before. However, the pandemic meant that it was impossible for them to deliver their original plans and Phoenix Art Space had to shut its doors. The organisers came up with new initiatives so that the Up My Street project could support the changing needs of local residents. As well as supporting the Phoenix Community Centre emergency food hub, the project offered free places for residents to take part in online creative courses, providing local families and adults with free art packs. Connie Bielsa, Partnerships Manager for Hyde, said: “Due to the pandemic, the project has been reshaped. Organisers set up a food hub with residents and delivered creative art packs to homes during lockdown. Online art courses were then set up, which are a really valuable way for people to take part in something that’s sociable as well as creative.”

The free art packs are created by artists from the project. They range from peg doll activities for families, to packs of materials for adults, which include a sketch book, pens, pencils, water colour paints and brushes. The pack allows adults to take part in the online courses, which include portrait photography, life drawing and water colours for beginners. Eileen Campbell, who has lived on the Phoenix Estate since 1998, said: “I don’t consider myself to be very artistic, but the group is really supportive – we chat on Zoom and it has been a great experience.” Tina March, Treasurer of the Phoenix Community Association, said: “I think it’s a big help to escape and not think about what’s going on in the world. Art takes you away from where you are and it’s really important for mental health.”

Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor News... For me, hope or a vision of a better future is important. Hope is a crucial motor to drive us towards a better world. 27 News from the Friends of Blakers Park…

Greetings from Blakers Park! Welcome to the first outing for Blakers Park News in the Brightonian. Here’s the latest from in and around our special little green space here in Fiveways. Christmas Carols on Zoom with Music Mike

FIVEWAYS

A year ago, who’d have thought our annual gathering to sing carols by candlelight under the clocktower would need to be an online event? But we managed it! We were delighted that over 40 families were able to sing along together and raise some Christmas cheer (via Zoom) with our good friend Music with Mike. Blakers Park Tree Project In late 2019 we planted 13 new trees, each sponsored by local residents. These young trees – oaks, sweetgum, juneberries, cherry, pear, hawthorn and rowan – are all doing well. We have funds for eighteen more trees and will resume planting as soon as it’s safe to do so. As one of our sponsors said: ‘Thinking about the tree gives me something positive to look forward to: a beacon of life and growth for when we emerge from the pandemic.’ Safety in our local parks Sadly, we have seen a spike in anti-social behaviour in Blakers in recent months. We are working with others locally to see what can be done to ensure people feel safe in the park and hope to have some measures in place by the Spring when the evenings draw out. If you witness anything please do report it on the Sussex Police website.

Our regular thanks to… The City Parks Team, Wettons and Frosts for maintaining the park and the clock. To everyone who uses the park and our Fiveways neighbourhood. A special thank you to our volunteer gardeners, the Cleveland Arms and to Sally at the café. Lastly, thank you once again to The Brightonian for giving us the space for this update. Please stay safe – look after yourselves and others by respecting social distancing in the park. And please look after Blakers – use the bins or take your litter home and recycle whatever you can.

29 News from a local group…

A plea from Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods Who wants wood? Well, apparently quite a lot do. Recently we’ve noticed a lot of people collecting dead wood, fallen boughs and seen evidence of branches being cut from living trees.

These creatures living off the decaying wood are being preyed upon by others; the carnivorous wolf spider, the common shrew, the insect-eating birds, the song thrush feasting on the snails, and they in turn become food for birds of prey such as kestrels, owls, carrion crows or mammals such as hedgehogs and foxes. The decaying wood is also colonized by mosses, lichens and fungal hyphae which secretly thread their way through it, their presence only noticeable when their fruiting bodies, the fungi erupt on the surface.

The very wet autumn produced lots of mushrooms and toadstools and some can still be seen in the woods... The very wet autumn produced lots of mushrooms and toadstools and some can still be seen in the woods if you look carefully. Look out for the strange, but aptly named Jelly Ear and King Alfred’s Cakes on the fallen wood.

FIVEWAYS

Perhaps it’s because the weather has been particularly harsh this winter and people with log burners and open fires think it does no harm to ‘tidy up’ the woodland floor and take a few logs home. But lift off a piece of dead bark or look under a log and you’ll expose a myriad of creepy crawlies; woodlice, centipedes, millipedes, beetles, tiny springtails as well as snails, spiders and larvae, all of whom need that decaying wood for food or a place to hide away until spring.

So please think twice before removing that rotting log or carrying home a fallen branch, they are an important part of the web of life, the food chain and we need the wood to remain there where it fell. We would also add another plea, please don’t saw off branches and take them home – you may be cutting off a piece of Elm and unwittingly spreading the devastating Dutch Elm Disease as the beetle that harbours the disease lives just below the bark. Brighton & Hove is one of the few places that still have these magnificent trees. We don’t know when we will be able to resume work in the woods but follow us on Facebook, or Twitter or go to our website (www.fhbw.org.uk) where we’ll post when we can have volunteers back again: there’ll be a lot of work to catch up on! Stay safe, avoid unnecessary contact and keep well.

News from Labour councillor Tracey Hill…

Councillor News for Hollingdean & Stanmer ward

Throughout the crisis the council has been providing regular updates, and its website is a good place to start if you need information. It’s great that vaccinations are moving forward apace. Unfortunately, scammers are busy trying to use this opportunity to take advantage. Remember, the NHS will never ask for any financial information from you, and if you find yourself on an online form which is asking for this, beware – they are very realistic, apparently. We are continuing in our roles as local councillors and our meetings are now all online. At the December meeting of Full Council, Cllr Theresa Fowler proposed measures to reduce the impact of fireworks. Over the years, celebrations involving fireworks seem to have become more common, so it’s time more attention FIVEWAYS is given to the negative effects of noisy fireworks on animals, and for example people suffering from PTSD. The roving surgeries that we enjoyed so much over the summer are now on hold. One meeting we had planned in early January was a site visit to explore using some grass verges in Hollingdean for wildflower growing. During lockdown, some verges went uncut for quite some New lights/sockets Darren Clarke to full re-wires Home Electrical Guaranteed low rates Services Call Darren

time, and residents commented on how nice it was to see a variety of flowers and insects. Others, though, wanted to see verges cut as soon as possible, so we need to accommodate different views and find some suitable places. Following discussion on Facebook about speeding traffic and school parking, I was pleased that after I reported this to officers, the 20mph signage on Davey Drive was refreshed and is now much more noticeable. It’s good to make a difference. We know how difficult it is to park in Hollingdean, especially in the roads just to the south of the Dip. Hollingdean is due to be consulted later this year or next year on whether residents want permit parking. Again, this is an issue where people have very different views, so a wide-ranging consultation to establish what people want is essential. It’s recently been proposed that the old skatepark at the top of Hollingdean Park is converted to a multi-use games area. If you have any ideas for how this space could best be used, we’d love to hear them. Cllr Tracey Hill Tracey.Hill@brighton-hove.gov.uk J.H. BRICKWORK Our Services include

Meet Stephanie Prior Stephanie Prior is one of two standing Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) invitees appointed in October to Brighton & Hove City Council committees, as part of the council’s pledge to be an anti-racist council. It is also an opportunity to challenge stereotypes that may have previously prevented people of colour from gaining access to powerful positions. I hope my position will encourage confidence in others who are passionate about their communities to represent and have a seat at the table.

I think the Black Lives Matter Movement combined with the pandemic have highlighted many issues in terms of the injustices some experience more than others nationally and globally. My objective is to push for more opportunities and outcomes that support our community to move forward. I am keen to work on campaigns that support ‘un-marketing’ racism through celebrating culture, diversity and inclusion. I would like to encourage more networking and integration with the hope that this supports more diversity in business, education and politics. What are your interests outside work? Vaccination scam alert

Bulky Waste Service

Some people have received suspicious calls, text messages and doorstep visits offering the Covid-19 vaccination. Some of these calls are asking for payments.

Brighton & Hove City Council has now taken control of its popular ‘bulky waste’ service.

All calls asking for payments are scams. Please ignore all such offers. The national vaccination programme is being run by the NHS. Nobody else. And it is free.

To protect yourself and your family members from fraud and criminals, please remember that the NHS will not: • text you and ask you to enter personal details on a link • call you and ask you to press buttons on a keypad • ask for payment or for any bank details • ask to come to your home. If you receive a call you believe to be fraudulent, hang up and report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Please do not contact the NHS or turn up to get a vaccination before they contact you. The NHS is currently offering the COVID-19 vaccine to people most at risk from coronavirus and those who work closest with them. These people include care home residents and staff, followed by people over 80 and health and social care workers. Other people will then be offered it in order of age and risk.

The service, which collects white goods and other big, unwanted household items, has been managed by the council and run by an outside contractor in recent years. However, the council has decided to totally operate the service which will increase revenue in the long run and help improve recycling rates. Any goods that can be reused will be made available to residents who are disadvantaged or on low incomes.

The service allows residents to get rid of large household items including furniture like tables and chairs, beds, mattresses, wardrobes and even upright pianos. The service allows residents to get rid of large household items including furniture like tables and chairs, beds, mattresses, wardrobes and even upright pianos. The council are also collecting electrical and kitchen equipment including washing machines, fridge freezers, cookers and TVs. The prices for collecting the goods remain the same. 39 Kate Elms of The Keep archive centre on an event 100 years ago…

The unveiling of the Chattri Memorial... During the First World War, some of Brighton’s most prominent public buildings, including the Royal Pavilion and the Dome, were transformed into military hospitals for the care of Indian soldiers wounded on the Western Front.

The first of these cremations took place on 31 December 1914, and the idea for an appropriate memorial dates back to the following summer. It was championed by John Lonsdale Otter, Mayor of Brighton in the early years of the First World War, who is seen as having played a pivotal role in providing hospital facilities for the wounded Indian soldiers in Brighton. Otter was deeply committed to the campaign to provide a memorial for all the Indian soldiers, and he is thought to have devised the inscription on the Chattri. The memorial itself was designed by Elias Cosmos Henriques, a young architect from Mumbai who was completing his studies in England. Its name is significant - a chhatri is an elevated, domed pavilion often used in Indian architecture for funerary sites. Made from white Sicilian marble, it was built on the site of the original ghat, and features three granite slabs representing the individual cremation sites. The photograph shown here is one of a number in The Keep’s archives that record the unveiling of the memorial on 1 Febru-

ary 1921, one hundred years ago. The dedication was made by the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII), and he can just be seen on the far side of the memorial, alongside Brighton Mayor Bertram Southall. Other photographs show the servicemen and dignitaries more clearly, as well as the huge crowd of onlookers present that day, but this image captures the solemnity of the occasion, as well as the remote and dramatic setting of the Chattri, high on the Downs, exposed to the elements. After the ceremony, the royal party returned to central Brighton via a processional route festooned with flags and bunting. It seems fitting that the official Address of Welcome to the Prince of Wales was held at The Dome, followed by a reception at the Royal Pavilion, both buildings by then resuming their civic functions. www.thekeep.info

The men who died in these hospitals were given burials or cremations that respected their religions. These included 53 Sikhs and Hindus, who were cremated on a burning ghat on the Downs, near Patcham, before their ashes were scattered at sea.

41 News from the council on the city’s Climate Assembly…

A carbon neutral future In Brighton & Hove, a group of residents has been planning ahead, sharing their vision of a carbon neutral city in 2030 and how this could be achieved.

The assembly’s suite of measures are designed to tackle transport-related carbon emissions in the city. The ten recommendations aim to increase active travel around the city and expand healthier pedestrianised areas. They are ranked in the assembly’s own order of priority. • A car-free city centre

• Messaging should focus on what people gain rather than lose and educate or expand knowledge

• The public transport system should be affordable and accessible

• There should be a focus on incentives rather than sanctions as interventions.

Members of the assembly have asked the council to focus its efforts on making sure • The council should actively consult and there is no need for private car use (unless someone is disabled/has a blue badge). engage with the community • Creation of healthier low traffic or pedestrianised communities

• Introduce mobility hubs (recognisable places connecting up different types of travel – for example cycle hire, train station, parking and transport information) • Cyclists should be prioritised over cars through well-designed dedicated cycling networks that are safe and practical for day-to-day use as well as leisure • Introduce a ‘park & ride’ to minimise car use in the city • Make public transport a more convenient alternative to driving a car

The recommendations will be considered by the city council as part of planned work on transport and climate change. This work recognises that we should take into account everyone’s needs, allow some vehicle access and provide positive benefits for the whole city. A summary of the initial work on possible options for a Liveable City Centre and an expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone was due to be presented to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee on 19 January. A report on the council’s Carbon Neutral Plan will be brought to committee in March 2021.

GENERAL

Members of the innovative Climate Assembly have launched a series of recommendations on transport to steer the city towards its ambitious carbon neutral goal. The assembly brought together a diverse group of 50 people from across the city to learn about climate issues, discuss them with one another, and make recommendations about what should happen and how things should change.

43 Louise Peskett tells us about her new book on women’s history in Brighton and Hove…

The Fearless and the Fabulous Writer and tour-guide Louise Peskett created the popular Notorious Women of Brighton walks in 2013 to help people discover the rich women’s history around the city. She has now published a book, “The Fearless and the Fabulous, a Journey through Brighton and Hove’s Women’s History”. Tell us more about your book… It takes the form of a journey around Brighton, stopping off at 90 sites of interest. I had the idea during the first lockdown as I thought it would give people the chance to do an interesting self-guided walk around town. People can also do the journey from their own armchairs of course. I have great respect for them all as they each swam against the tide and forged new ground in different ways. I’m a great fan of Marguerite Patten, who lived in Withdean in later life and played such a great part in helping people in wartime make their rations go further by inventing recipes such as peapod soup and eggless cake. I became obsessed with collecting her 1970s recipe cards from eBay and now have some wonderful and colourful recipes for meals including jelly and luncheon-meat, sometimes in the same dish! I also love Pauline Crabbe who I met in the 1990s. Pauline wasn’t only a talented actress, becoming the first black actress to appear on British TV, she became a pioneering social worker, who changed the lives of many women for the better. What was the weirdest story? Maybe Edith Tudor-Hart, who quietly settled down to run an antiques shop in the North Laine after a successful career, spying for the Soviet Union and playing a major part in the Cambridge Spy Ring. Or Dorothy Levitt who set a Ladies World Speed Record at the Brighton Speed Trials

She was a secretary for Napier cars and was taught to drive because the management thought she‘d be useful eye-candy in publicity. It seems she ran with the brief a bit further than expected, triumphing in races all over Europe, setting water speed records and becoming one of the first women to pilot a plane! “The Fearless and the Fabulous” is available from historywomenbrighton.com or contact historywomenbrighton@outlook.com

47 News from Brighton and Hove Food Partnership…

Wasting food feeds climate change Did you know that throwing away food is one of the biggest contributors to climate change? 25-30% of global greenhouse gases are caused by food production, yet a third of all food produced is never eaten.

To highlight the impact that wasting food has on climate change, this year Brighton and Hove Food Partnership have launched a citywide food use campaign to get us feeding bellies and not bins. As well as a significant contributor to global warming, wasting food costs an average family of four around £720 a year. It’s the equivalent of losing a whole bag of lovely food on a weekly shop.

According to the national waste advisor WRAP, we wasted less food during lockdown. But there is some good news. According to the national waste advisor WRAP, we wasted less food during lockdown. Being at home more made us check in our fridges more often and use up our leftovers. We just need to keep up those good habits. It’s the easiest and cheapest way to help the environment.

1. Make a shopping list and meal plan before you shop. It’s never a good idea to go shopping when hungry as you tend to buy more than you need. 2. Chill the fridge out. Your fridge will keep food safer for longer if set between 2 and 5 degrees. 3. Freeze leftovers and things typically wasted like bread and milk. Food can be frozen right up to its ‘use by’ date. Make sure your freezer is below -18 degrees. Brighton and Hove Food Partnership will be organising citywide activities for the first ever national Food Waste Action Week from 1 – 7 March. Visit their website for more food use tips and find out how you can get involved. https://bhfood.org.uk If on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, join in the conversation and share your own food use tips by following @btnhovefood. Brighton and Hove Food Partnership recently led the city’s bid for the Gold Sustainable Food Places Award. We’re the first place in the UK to achieve this award.

Here are three tips that can make a big difference to the amount of food wasted in the home. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

GENERAL

In the UK, most food waste - 70% - is wasted in our homes. Every year we chuck 4.5 million tonnes of edible food into our bins together with all the precious resources it took to produce and transport it. The most commonly wasted foods include milk, bread, potatoes, tomatoes, bananas and poultry.

49 The council wants people’s views on new cycle lanes and other travel changes…

Consultation on new travel schemes Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Committee, meeting on 18th December, agreed to progress work on five new travel schemes to be delivered using Tranche 2 of the Active Travel Fund from the Government.

The council is using the Government’s Active Travel Fund to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic by providing safe access to walking and cycling routes. For Tranche 2 of this fund, the following schemes are proposed: • Old Shoreham Road A270 – continuation of temporary segregated cycle lanes from Hangleton Road to near the western city border • Kingsway / Wellington Road A259 – continuation of temporary segregated cycle lanes from Fourth Avenue to the west • London Road A23 – permanent upgrade of existing cycle lane to segregated cycle lanes and upgrades to key junctions • Western Road – permanent improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and bus users along this key corridor • Madeira Drive - work has begun on phase 1 – the road is now operating one-way eastbound following the full closure previously. Future works to be completed in phase 2 include provision of a cycle lane, increasing the number of blue badge bays, and changing the

orientation of pay & display parking – the scheme is being delivered under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order and will therefore be consulted on separately to the other schemes. A six-week period of public and stakeholder consultation will start no later than 1st February for the first four schemes. The outcomes of the consultation will then be presented to the ETS Committee, alongside final scheme proposals which will have been influenced by the consultation responses. The consultation will include an online questionnaire, leaflets to be sent to properties directly affected and postcards to be sent to a wider area of properties affected. There will also be public opinion surveys and information circulated to those not directly affected and to stakeholders and community groups, who will be invited to join online sessions. For more information and updates, visit brighton-hove.gov.uk/travel-and-transport

They also approved a plan for meaningful public and stakeholder consultation on these schemes, prior to their implementation, as well as consultation on the Tranche 1 Active Travel schemes for the A259 seafront road and the A270 Old Shoreham Road cycle lanes. In addition, the committee agreed the proposed terms of reference for a new Active and Inclusive Travel Forum.

53 Colin Barton on living with ME…

It’s all about M.E.

“I accepted I could not live as I used to with ME” Before I became ill I used to manage a number of clubs and bars in Brighton and led a full and active life.

Although I am really much better now after learning how to manage the illness I still cannot function physically or mentally for any useful period of time and have to avoid stress. I had to accept that I would not be able to live as I used to and reduce my ambitions. Myalgic encephalopathy (ME) or Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) that can sometimes follow a viral infection or trauma is classified as a neurological disorder and affects nearly 9,000 people across Sussex and Kent to varying degrees. Guidelines are available for the medical profession and some NHS specialist services are operational across the UK including those in Sussex and Kent that are helping many towards better health. We are however aware of a number of patients that continue to be seriously ill and housebound with a few virtually bedbound and in need of care. Symptoms include profound physical and mental fatigue, concentration and working memory difficulties, muscle pain, sleep and mood disturbances along with gastric problems.

GENERAL

I became very ill in 1981 due to a mix of a viral illness and stress when I was running my own successful hotel business that I had to give up due to the physical and mental symptoms of the illness that often rendered me bedbound and in need of care. I remember well having to be helped around by our elderly housekeeper. It took six years before I received the correct diagnosis after viewing the author and former yachtswoman Clare Francis interviewed on TV when she went public about her ME.

The Sussex & Kent ME/CFS Society that marked its 30th anniversary during 2017 was founded when people got together supported by hospital consultant Dr Keith Hine and Brighton MP Sir Andrew Bowden. Research being carried out by the Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and the Brighton & Sussex Medical School that members of ours are participating in is showing interesting findings which will increase the biomedical understanding of ME/CFS that could help management strategies in the future. We are currently receiving enquiries from those struggling to get over COVID-19 long after the acute illness has apparently cleared. Healing in music... Eight musicians from Brighton found their musical juices flowing at what could have been one of the worst times of their life.

The musicians, all in recovery from some form of addiction, turned their talents to creating an album during the first lockdown. On 22 January 2021, Liberation Through the Looking Glass became the first ever vinyl release from the not-for-profit record label and live music company We Are Not Saints, and is limited to just 200 copies. It is an album inspired by how it feels to be in recovery during lockdown. All the artists have struggled at some point with their addictions, and the album is a genre-spanning collection of pop, indie, soul and singer/songwriter originals. It can be purchased at wearenotsaints.co.uk and is also on Spotify.

News of an outdoor exhibition at Fabrica Art Gallery…

Murmurations Fabrica Art Gallery in Duke Street is currently holding an outdoor exhibition “Murmurations” by local artists Shared Space and Light. This is a projected video installation which transforms Fabrica’s huge stained glass windows into a moving canvas exploring the starling murmurations that take place in Brighton in the winter months. Created by Brighton-based collective Shared Space and Light (Giles Thacker, Kate Laird and Chris Grottick), Murmurations reminds us of the wonder and beauty in our immediate environment. Giles Thacker has been filming starling murmurations for over 10 years. He said: “Like many others, I’ve been mesmerised by the flocking patterns of the starlings. And I love the fact that we have these awe-inspiring displays right in the heart of our urban environments - the murmurations briefly reconnect us to the natural world and are a powerful reminder of the sheer beauty and wonder of our natural heritage.” The exhibition will be on display until at least the end of February and it’s visible from Ship Street after dark. Fabrica are encouraging people to share their photographs of the artwork on Instagram by using the hashtags #murmurationsafterdark and #fabricaafterdark. Colour. The easiest way to make a big impact. Or subtle change. Choice. A wonderful thing, but sometimes too much is, well, just too much. Eco performance. Finishes that cover easily, in formulas that take care of you and the planet. Our paint collection. Timeless shades that will do the job, beautifully. Because good design never grows old.

61 Admission numbers are to be reduced for nine schools across the city…

School Admission Numbers Brighton & Hove City Council’s Children, Young People & Skills Committee, meeting on 11th January, approved a report that will result in a reduction in school places across the city. The council held a public consultation in the autumn on a plan to reduce the total number of school places across the city by 360 for the academic year starting in September 2022, because of predictions of a large number of surplus places, which could lead to some schools facing financial problems. The Published Admission Numbers (PAN) of nine schools in the city will now be reduced as follows:

• Benfield Primary School from 60 to 30 pupils • Brunswick Primary School from 120 to 90 pupils • Downs Infant School from 120 to 90 pupils • Goldstone Primary School from 90 to 60 pupils • Moulsecoomb Primary School from 60 to 30 pupils • Stanford Infant School from 90 to 60 pupils • West Blatchington Primary School from 60 to 30 pupils • Hove Park School and Sixth Form from 300 to 180 pupils. A council report concluded: “The council is required to manage the availability of school places in the city and with pupil numbers falling there is a demonstrable need to reduce the number of surplus places in the city. The aim of these proposals is to support the whole family of

schools with the commitment to avoid closing schools and preserving the physical accommodation for future need which has to be balanced against the impact on individual schools, some of which may not yet have been directly affected by a significant drop in pupils on roll.” Richard Barker, Head of School Organisation for Brighton & Hove City Council, told the committee that strong views had been presented about the proposals in certain areas of the city, but he said the council couldn’t put off making changes. The Conservatives on the committee didn’t support the reduction in the PAN at West Blatchington Primary School. Cllr Vanessa Brown told the meeting that this would leave West Blatchington and North Hangleton with insufficient places if all the children in the neighbourhood opted for their local school. However, the committee voted to accept all the proposals.
