4 There are lots of creative classes at this Kemptown studio…

New community facility… East Side Print East Side Print is a new Community Interest Company offering screen printing, fabric printing and photography courses and studio membership from their workshop in Arundel Mews, Kemptown. Artist Louise Bristow, photographer Moose Azim and printmaker Cath Bristow tell us more… Why did you decide to set up East Side Print CIC? Events over the last year have hit the Arts and Culture sector hard. Many organisations face difficult times, some will close for good. This is the reason that we set up East Side Print CIC. Louise and Cath taught screen printing for several years, in the same studio, for a company called screenArt. Due to the pandemic, screen-Art was forced to close but offered Louise and Cath the opportunity to take over the lease. We didn’t want Kemptown to lose such a great facility, so we set up a community interest company (CIC) to take on the running of the studio. As a CIC our activities must be of benefit to the public, and any profits are reinvested into the company. How many people are involved? We have three directors, Louise, Moose and Cath. We teach the courses and manage the running of the studio and the company. Also, five committee members who help us make decisions and check we are fulfilling our community interest aims. They all bring different skills and experience. Their roles are voluntary, and we’re really grateful for their support. Tell us more about the classes and services you offer… We offer short courses in screen printing, fabric printing and creative photography, all hands-on, providing huge scope for creativity and inspiration, Saturday work-

shops, which are one-off, experimental or fun sessions and a studio membership scheme enabling those who have attended a course and are confident to join the studio to use the screen printing facilities. Our aim is to empower people to learn new skills, gain confidence in their creativity and promote independent practice. What are you planning after lockdown ends? We will open as East Side Print CIC on Saturday 17 April. We are really looking forward to welcoming people to the space. Currently we are seeking funding to offer subsidised places on courses and creating outreach opportunities in the community. We plan to set up an online shop for members and this year we are taking part in the Artists Open House Festival for the first time; come by and see us. We’ve got plenty of ideas…. Next steps for Madeira Drive The next phase of work to make Madeira Drive a safe space for everyone has begun. The iconic road was reopened to eastbound motor vehicles in October as part of two phases of work agreed by the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee (ETS) in September.

Madeira Drive while it was closed to traffic in 2020

Now, following further consultation with key stakeholders, including local businesses and disability groups, work has begun to: • Create a protected two-way cycle lane on the south side of the carriageway • Remove the cycle lane on the pavement, creating additional space for pedestrians • Introduce crossing points at key points between the Palace Pier and Duke’s Mound • Increase the number of Blue Badge bays from 14 to 27 • Change the orientation of Pay & Display Parking Bays for easier use The work is set to be completed in May, depending on weather conditions.

Madeira Drive will continue to be available for organised events. Councillor Amy Heley, chair of the ETS Committee, said: “Madeira Drive is a huge part of the city’s history so I’m delighted it’s being transformed into a space that everyone can enjoy. It’s important that cyclists and pedestrians can travel along the road safely while those who still need to use a car can continue to do so. I’m especially pleased that we’ve been able to increase the number of Blue Badge bays. We are continuing to create an infrastructure for active, sustainable and accessible travel which is vital for reducing toxic emissions and improving air quality in the city.”

The council will be working closely with colleagues currently developing improvements to the Duke’s Mound junction, and some parking suspensions and footway closures will be necessary. Every effort will Councillor Gary Wilkinson, opposition be made to keep disruption to a minimum. lead on the ETS Committee, said: “With warmer, sunnier days approaching, it is The changes are being made through understandable that people will want to an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order. get outside more often and be near the This means the council will have the sea, and these changes should create flexibility to develop the scheme further if more space for pedestrians to safely required. Sea Lanes pool to be 50 metres Developers of an open-air swimming pool on the site of the former Peter Pan’s playground in Madeira Drive have been granted permission to change their plans for the site. They have reduced the number of modular building units from 107 to 74, increased the overall floorspace and increased the length of the swimming pool to 50 metres (from 25 metres). They have also been granted permanent consent for the pool and 10-year temporary consent for the modular buildings. Kemptown news…

10 We received this letter from a reader in response to last month’s article on the Brighton Gasworks development…

Monster gasworks development The planned development at the far end of Kemptown above the marina will be a massive over-development in a crucial area adjoining the South Downs. This development will not only destroy the local character, but also destroy jobs and small businesses currently occupying the site. It is not too late to oppose these proposals. The main result of the planned over-development will be to provide investments for overseas property developers rather than homes that can be bought or rented by local residents. Although there will be 700 flats, none of them will be affordable. This is another excessive development, in line with the Stalinist blocks in the marina. The tower blocks will be up to 15 storeys tall, completely out of character with, and contributing nothing to the local community. The failure to provide a single affordable home is a disgrace. Apart from affordable housing, the community really needs enhanced local public amenities and support for small local businesses and jobs. The development should be in character and scale with the area. It should not be in character with the sheds and posh blocks going up around Brighton. We need low rise, positive development in East Brighton supporting real communities, not tower blocks as dense as the developer can get away with, built for short term profit rather than for the benefit of long term communities. The local community does not want another series of litter-strewn deserted wind tunnels. It needs development in scale

Artist’s impression of the proposed development and character with good public amenities. Where is the infrastructure to support thousands of new residents? Where are the roads, parking, educational, sport, art, health and community facilities? “AGHAST”, the campaigning group, is fighting against the potential health impacts on local residents which will result from releasing the toxins on the site into the air as the contaminated soil beneath its current concrete seal is released by pile driving. You can make a contribution to Aghast’s well researched campaign via:www.crowdfunder.co.uk/fighting-hyper-development-of-brighton-gasworks-1 Nicholas Sabine

13 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

Slowly life returns QUEENS PARK

There is no time like Spring, When life’s alive in everything, Before new nestlings sing, Before cleft swallows speed their journey back Along the trackless track – God guides their wing, He spreads their table that they nothing lack, Before the daisy grows a common flower Before the sun has power To scorch the world up in his noontide hour. Extract from Spring by Christina Rossetti Lockdown restrictions have placed us all under unprecedented pressures. The impact of some of them may be long-lasting for so many of us, writes Geoffrey Bowden, Chair of the Friends of Queen’s Park. Queen’s Park, like many of the city’s open spaces, has played a vital role in contributing towards the community’s wellbeing. Being able to take daily exercise in the park has been a lifeline for those who are able to take advantage of the open space on their doorsteps. Last month the joyous sounds of excited children returning to local schools could be heard carried across the park by the breeze and this month we will be allowed to meet outside with one other household, or as a group of up to six people. As a result we can expect to see even more people taking advantage of Queen’s Park. While governments can legislate to curtail human contact to counter the spread of the virus, nature knows no limitations. With perfect timing for the Government’s road map timetable, the early signs of the coming Spring in Queen’s Park are all too evident and a stroll through the park is

reflected in my photograph. Many readers will be all too aware of the park’s elm collection, so I set myself a challenge of photographing as much flora as I could in a brisk 10-minute walk diagonally across the park from North Drive to the bottom of East Drive, but deliberately excluded trees. With an eye for colour I was able to snap primrose, crocus, spurge, hyacinth, culver, rocket lettuce, Siberian squills, violets and common barberries before my self-imposed time limit had elapsed. While plant life was the rule for my challenge, I simply couldn't ignore the charming frolics of three grey squirrels – hence they got into the frame too. The epithet ‘full of the joys of Spring’ certainly applied to those squirrels and served to emphasise that, once restrictions on socialising are eased further in mid-April, we can all look forward to a wonderful welcome from nature. Hopefully, having been banged up for so long we will appreciate it all the more. Friends of Queens Park

15 News from Labour councillors Nick Childs and Amanda Evans…

Major Investment in Madeira Terraces and Black Rock: We were delighted to vote for the multi-million pound investment for renovation of Madeira Drive. This will see the arches restored to their former glory over the next few years. This follows the redevelopment of Black Rock now underway which will include a new amphitheatre, renovated temple and reading room, a BMX track, classroom, toilets, replanting of Duke’s Mound, playground and new cycle lanes to the Marina. Councillors Award Grants to Local Food Banks: We were pleased to award some of our annual ward grants to two local food banks. One for expectant and new mothers at the Tarner Children’s Centre and one for the food bank run by the Brighton Table Tennis Club. Food poverty remains a reality for many in our city and we were pleased to support the Labour Group on Council in increasing the weekly food voucher value for school children late last year. More Support for Local Children: We have provided grants to the Tarner Project to enable children from deprived homes to have laptops and once again made an award to the Tarner Children’s Library for books, toys and play packs during lockdown. Voices in Exile and St Luke’s Residents Association: Further grants were issued to Voices in Exile, a local ward charity providing legal and social support to asylum seekers many of whom have arrived from war-torn countries or have been tortured. The lockdown has made things even harder for this group of residents. We were also delighted to provide financial support to the great St Luke’s Residents Association to build their local capacity and

also to undertake vital work on tackling speeding traffic in Freshfield Road and the St Luke’s area. Tackling Drug Abuse in Queens Park Ward: The ongoing challenge of drug-related anti-social behaviour continues in parts of the ward. We have been proactive in lobbying the Council and police for tougher action. This included a successful amendment for funding a Drug Crime Officer to tackle the issue, a call for zero tolerance policing in the area and a residents’ summit on how the issue can be tackled. We have secured increased patrols including a high profile ‘sweep’ of St James Street. We are very concerned about the situation in our parks and Cllr Childs has asked the Council what action will be taken to address hot spots outside the St James Street Co-op and Tarner Park. More Assistance for local businesses during pandemic: The Council has paid millions in grants to local businesses, but many have not yet claimed. This March new and additional grants have been announced. Businesses and clubs etc need apply only once to be assessed for various grants. Visit www.brighton-hove. gov.uk/coronavirus-covid-19/businesses-and-employers Going forward: We always want to hear from residents and advocate for our ward. Get in touch and let us know what you think our priorities should be and how we can help. Cllr Nick Childs nick.childs@brighton-hove.gov.uk Cllr Amanda Evans amanda.evans@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Christmas market

Richmond Square Market

Councillors have approved a bid from local business E3 Events to operate a Christmas market in Valley Gardens.

Brighton & Hove City Council are intending to license an area of land in Richmond Square, within the newly developed Valley Gardens, to stage a weekly market on Saturdays or Sundays.

The proposal includes giving a percentage of profits to support the local community and Valley Gardens. The preferred bid also includes a commitment to prevent the use of single-use plastics in the market. The Christmas market will be free to attend and run for three years, starting this year, from 26 November to 31 December. It will offer a mixture of retail stalls, food and drink, entertainment and attractions and will be staged throughout Valley Gardens (St Peter’s Square, Richmond Square, Victoria Gardens and Old Steine). Councillor Martin Osborne, co-chair of the Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture Committee, said: “Events, retail and hospitality play such a major part in the life of our city and the sector has experienced severe losses during the pandemic. While we cannot be complacent about the case rates we are facing today in our city, we are hoping to be able to support an offer of outdoor events by the end of this year to aid the recovery. And if everyone plays their part then hopefully a more normal life for the city will arrive by Christmas time. The Christmas market will provide opportunities for local suppliers and offer a wonderful winter attraction for residents and visitors.” Covid safety will be part of the event planning and take account of any government restrictions that may be in place at the time.

Valley Gardens

Richmond Square is between St Peter’s Square and Victoria Gardens. The council are expecting the free-to-attend market to be a mixture of food and beverage, product and general retail stalls and to feature at least 80% of businesses local to Brighton & Hove. The market could take place all year round, but may be relocated when other events are taking place on the neighbouring St Peter’s Square. Here at The Brightonian we are keen to help local community groups get back up and running as and when the Covid restrictions start to be lifted. Please let us know what’s happening with your community group. info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

21 Councillor news from Steph Powell, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove…

Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor News Like many of you, I have been working at home, and whilst I’m grateful to use online platforms, it can be exhausting. There is nothing like meeting people in the flesh and roll-on the day when we can safely do so. Much has been achieved in online council meetings this past year, but worryingly, the regulation that has allowed these instead of face-to-face meeting ends on 7th May. Greens continue to press government to extend this essential regu- Budget Council 2021 lation beyond May. The biggest meeting of the year – Budget Council - took place in February. Preparation took many months, and I especially want to thank fellow ward councillor David Gibson, who worked tirelessly to help Greens shape our budget in this most challenging of years. A compromise was agreed between the political parties, which is reflected in the many cross-party smiling faces in the attached photo. Importantly, and in response to our meeting with RISE petitioners, Greens put an amendment to Budget, which proposed additional funding for domestic violence services in the city. I’m very glad to say that this was agreed by all councillors.

22 An update from the Hanover Community Association…

Hanover Community Association Hanover Community Association (HCA) is the small charity that manages the Hanover Centre on Southover Street. The charity is run by a committee of voluntary trustees who live locally. Spring is the perfect time for a new start after the hibernation season. As The Brightonian goes to press, we are busy planning. At the Hanover Centre, we are keen to be up and running to some degree from 12 April, so are working with hirers to revive those activities that are able to return safely from that date. This does mean that we have to continue with reduced opening hours/days. Please check our Facebook page for the most up-to-date news - @Hanover.Centre If you are looking to hire a room, perhaps as a class or rehearsal venue or to run a

summer activity, further details are on our website. We have a small meeting room and two large halls available. Obviously, we are only allowing numbers in line with current government guidelines, but please do get in touch and we will help you choose the best space to suit your needs. We are also looking at using our lovely garden for small public events in the summer months, from performance events to children’s activities and anything in between. 24 Get out this summer - play cricket with St Peter’s…

St Peter’s Cricket Club St Peter’s is a modern and inclusive cricket club at the heart of the Preston Park and Fiveways community.

We are based at the velodrome in Preston Park and we have over 250 members. We have been playing cricket here since 1883. We run six adult teams and have a thriving and successful colts section with youth teams from ages 7-17. Over the past few years we have seen our girls’ and women’s cricket grow. We would welcome more members. This coming season, we will be offering a number of opportunities for women and girls to try out cricket, along with the ECB sponsored cricket all-stars coaching programme, which is open to kids from ages 5 to 8. Look out for our programme of cricket events at Facebook.com/stpeterscricket. We also have exciting plans to regenerate our facilities so that we can make our clubhouse accessible for cricketers with disabilities, and provide the local community with a much needed all-yearround social hub. Extension plans for cricket clubhouse St Peter’s Cricket Club in Preston Park have applied to extend their clubhouse. The cricket club was established in 1883 and has been situated in Preston Park Velodrome since 1889. The freehold of the building is owned by Brighton & Hove City Council.

Most of the comments submitted to the council so far have been very supportive. One local resident said: “The design suggested is magnificent and will boost the area and bring a smile to anyone’s face who sees it when they come to either play cricket or enjoy cycling, or all the other benefits of this great outdoor area.”

St Peter’s Cricket Club have applied to build a two-storey rear extension to the basement and ground-floor levels and an extension to create a partial first-floor level including a front balcony, with the addition of access ramps. The club are keen to promote disabled cricket and need to improve their facilities to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act. They would like to expand the existing clubhouse, which is around 132 years old, into a multi-use facility for the local community. Currently there is no disabled access or disabled toilets and the building is only in use during the cricket season, which makes it a target for vandalism and antisocial behaviour during the rest of the year.

In this latest lockdown I have missed going out meeting residents in my ward and litter picking on our roving surgery with Tracey Hill who has now sadly left the council for family reasons. I will miss working with Tracey, but I look forward to starting again soon with our new council candidate. I have noticed the increase in litter around Hollingdean and Stanmer and there has also been an increase in dog poo which I have had many complaints about. The bins at Hollingdean Park are continually overflowing and I have contacted Cityclean who have said that the small dog poo bins are being replaced with larger universal bins around the city’s parks and will be placed in easier locations so that they can be emptied daily. I have also noticed an increase in dog poo on the streets and have asked for stencils, which are on order, to remind people to pick up after their dogs. The pandemic has shown how important our parks and open spaces are and how many people have been using them, and

I look forward to the finishing of the Stanmer Park restoration project and the transformation of the walled garden. I am really excited that one of the centrepieces of the project, the One Garden Brighton, will be open to the public in April with the opening weekend on Friday 2nd April to the 4th of April. You will soon be able to wander the gardens and buy locally sourced products and a takeaway coffee from One Market, which is an exciting prospect.

how they have helped with our physical and mental health. Which is why I was pleased that in the city’s budget-setting process, it was agreed to fund investment into our city parks and open spaces, including a playground refurbishment programme. It helps if you have experience with children, but what matters most is the personal qualities you possess. If you are nurturing, empathic, resilient, keen to work as part of a team and are willing to learn, you have the potential to be a foster carer. Do foster parents get paid? Yes, foster carers get generous pay, and only a small proportion is taxable – you will be pleasantly surprised! Do foster carers get training? Yes, but it’s ok if you don’t feel confident in a ‘classroom’ environment; we make sure everyone feels comfortable. Our training is currently virtual.

35 Local history from Kate Elms of The Keep archive centre…

The Promettes and the Easter Parade

The British Turkey Federation – keen to encourage more people to choose roast turkey for their Easter celebration - had arranged for some prime live specimens to be taken for a stroll on the promenade. To maximise publicity, each turkey was in the care of a young woman known as a Promette. Established in 1952, the Promettes were appointed to offer tourists friendly advice and information on behalf of Brighton Corporation during the summer season. They were picked from a local modelling school - criteria included a minimum height of 5’7” and the ability to speak either French, German, Italian or Spanish - and were dressed in smart, distinctive uniforms, complete with handbags, hats and heels. In the postwar years, Brighton Council members were keen to appeal both to day trippers, who were so important to the local economy and had been descending on the town since the coming of the railways, and wealthy visitors from the UK and abroad, who might stay in one of the town’s many hotels. The glamour and style of the Promettes was probably thought to add a certain je ne sais quoi to Brighton’s image.

Their base was a caravan parked between the piers on the seafront. Armed with guidebooks and bus and train timetables, the young women were able to advise on what was on at the theatre, cinema and other local attractions, as well as how to get from one place to another. They might offer help with deckchair hire, or advice on dealing with sunburn. In a sign of the times, they carried cigarette lighters, although they weren’t allowed to smoke on duty themselves, and in film footage shot in 1956 by Pathé News, were even captured holding a baby while its father made a call from a public phone box. The baby was perhaps less of a challenge than the turkeys. The photograph shown here was one of a number in The Keep’s archives taken by an Argus photographer on Wednesday 18 March. It looks to have been a fairly overcast, grey day; in the background, the beach looks deserted and in the other shots taken that day, there are few onlookers on the prom. Not perhaps what the publicity officers had in mind for their Easter parade! www.thekeep.info

37 News from the council…

Work has begun on an £80m roll-out of full-fibre broadband throughout the city, beginning with Moulsecoomb & Bevendean ward.

Hydrogen fuel revolution Brighton & Hove City Council is part of a new energy group dedicated to putting Greater Brighton at the forefront of a hydrogen fuel revolution. Local authorities, businesses and organisations from across the region have formed a group called Hydrogen Sussex. By pooling expertise and lobbying power, Hydrogen Sussex aims to position the clean fuel as a mainstream energy carrier to help the drive to become a zero-carbon economy. Hydrogen Sussex will be well placed to support and stimulate the development of clean alternatives for some of the highest emitters of carbon and air pollution that are also critical for the UK economy – planes, ships, lorries and buses.

This will mean faster and more reliable internet, with connections less prone to slowing down during busy times of the day or when several devices are connected at the same time. The rest of the city is set to follow over the next four to five years. Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty said: “This represents real progress not just for our residents but will play an incredibly important part in supporting the local economy as we plan our recovery from the pandemic. While there may be some disruption during installation, we have been assured by the company installing the technology, CityFibre, that this will be kept to a minimum.” More information can be found at cityfibre.com.

The bid to encourage the development of hydrogen comes as one the group’s members, Shoreham Port, begins work on an ambitious new partnership with H2evolution to create a green hydrogen hub. A planning application will shortly be developed to establish a 20-megawatt electrolysis plant to the south of the port’s famous lock gates. Hydrogen Sussex members are helping to facilitate projects: Ricardo and Brighton & Hove Buses are working together on a project to convert existing buses to hydrogen fuel cells, and Hydrogen Sussex has enabled organisations to collaborate on bid applications. Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “This is the first step of many to develop our region as a hydrogen fuel hub.” Hydrogen Sussex can be found on LinkedIn and Twitter @HydrogenSussex

39 Exciting news on the Ledward Centre…

Brighton’s new LGBTQ+ Centre is emerging With more than 15% of people in Brighton and Hove identifying as LGBTQ+ – the highest in the country – you may wonder why the city doesn’t already have a dedicated centre for this community, and you’d be right to. Major world cities have for decades offered them, and they exist in Manchester, Birmingham, London and others. Indeed, Brighton does already have The Rainbow Hub on St James’s Street, which has proved to be a welcome point of contact for LGBT+ people seeking support, information or guidance, in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

Named after the much-missed community activist James Ledward, The Ledward Centre is in the cavernous, glass-fronted, former retail outlet space on Jubilee Street, within the celebrated Jubilee Library complex. It will include a café, bookshop and information point, as well as a cinema, onsite radio station, workspace, art gallery, meeting space and offices for LGBTQ+ magazine, Scene. The existing Rainbow Hub will move in, too. “The Ledward Centre has a lovely abbreviation – TLC – which encompasses what we’re all about: caring for the LGBTQ+ community and reaching those who are isolated within it,” says the Centre’s Director, Duncan Lustig-Prean. “From the light, modern and accessible building itself to the services and cultural activities for which it will be home, The Ledward Centre will live and breathe the values that make the full spectrum of Brighton’s LGBTQ+ communities so confident, vibrant and proud.” It’s clear that it’s needed: despite advances in rights legislation, studies show that

LGBTQ+ communities experience disproportionate levels of social isolation, health issues, and discrimination. Therefore, a welcoming, safe space where support, community and uplift are available under one roof is key. Membership will be free, and open to the whole of the LGBTQ+ community and our allies, and members will be asked to consider making a regular monthly donation according to what they feel they can pay to help to cover operating costs. “The Ledward Centre is on track to become a shining example of an inclusive community working together to support one another, understand one another, and come together to have fun,” says Chair of The Ledward Centre, Christopher Gull. “We’re overwhelmed by the positive reaction so far, and are hugely grateful to the city, and to the LGBTQ+ community, for their support. The Centre will be a space for our LGBTQ+ communities to enjoy for generations to come.” The Ledward Centre is calling for volunteers and supporters. Visit www.ledcen.org.uk for more. Torsten Højer

41 Homesharing is a great way for older people to stay in their own homes…

A new member of a Brighton family Lockdown has been challenging for many, and for the older population, isolation can be particularly challenging. Whilst there are no easy solutions, more and more people seem to be reaping the benefit of homesharing. After seeing interviews on the national news, an older lady in Brighton found a homeshare through Two Generations. Here’s her family’s experience:

“The whole process felt very safe with all the checks that were done and Two Generations has been fantastic all around, from careful research to answering all of our questions and making sure we had the best possible fit. “We have found it to be a great experience and, having got to know her during the process, Alison already feels like a new member of the family! We’re really excited about Alison, our new Homesharer moving in!” The Morris Family Homesharing: Physical help and companionship In a homeshare, a younger ‘homesharer’ lives in a room in the home of the older ‘householder’. In return, the homesharer offers practical support around the house and companionship. There’s no rent. Instead, the pair pays a small monthly fee to the homeshare organisation, keeping them accountable to mediate any issues that may arise throughout the arrangement. There is also a financial bursary in place for any householder who would struggle to pay their fee.

Homeshare programmes, like the one run by Two Generations, help by matching householders with the most compatible homesharer, considering both’s interests, cultures and also the kind of support needed, like food shopping and technology to stay connected with their family. Is it safe? Two Generations perform thorough references, Enhanced DBS checks, and conduct introductory meetings via phone/video calls. Covid-19 protocols are in place so the householders meet the programme coordinators and potential homesharers virtually before agreeing to share their homes. Two Generations have also partnered with charities such as TogetherCo in Brighton for a secure referral process. If you feel that sharing your spare room with a credible homesharer could benefit your physical and mental health, give Two Generations a call on 03333 44 77 38.

Inclusive dance film...

Libraries Consultation

Brighton-based community interest company Parable Dance secured Arts Council England funding to create a film bringing together 42 of the UK’s most experienced inclusive (disability) dance artists and companies.

A consultation on Brighton & Hove City Council’s Libraries Strategy is taking place. It opened on 22nd March and will end on Sunday 4th July 2021.

without disabilities nationwide. Their artistic directors Natasha Britton and Erica Moshman have created a film, titled ‘Inclusive Practice Is Good Practice’. It is a one and a quarter hour resource offering advice when teaching dance to people with disabilities. The film brings together the voices of 42 disabled and non-disabled dance practitioners, and features eight disabled and non-disabled dancers. The film is now on Parable Dance’s YouTube channel. It is aimed at anyone wanting to develop their inclusive dance skills, and particularly at university students, new graduates and early career dance artists both with and without disabilities, who have been missing out on work experience opportunities due to the pandemic. www.parabledance.co.uk

The surveys are seeking people’s views on detailed aspects of the full range of libraries services, including asking why people don’t use them. They include detailed questions on library stock in all formats from books and newspapers to digital resources. The consultation is on the council’s consultation portal: consultations. brighton-hove.gov.uk

Brighton Festival to return in May... The 54th Brighton Festival will return to the city with a celebration of art and culture from 1 May 2021, extending across the whole month and possibly into June.

Brighton Festival is known for presenting artistic work in new and interesting ways and 2021 will continue to celebrate a wide range of artforms, from visual art and installation, classical to contemporary music, theatre and comedy, film and literature. Following the latest government guidance on when lockdown restrictions can be eased, events will take place online, in unusual outdoor pop-up locations, and from 17 May live performances will open for socially distanced audiences in venues across the city. Brighton Dome will host events with Covid-secure public safety measures approved by the Good to Go industry mark. The popular Children’s Parade, which traditionally marks the opening day of the festival, will be adapted to be an event without gathering, creating a visual spectacle on Brighton’s streets for visitors to enjoy throughout the month. Community arts charity Same Sky has produced the much-loved event for over 30 years and will be offering schools and community groups alternative activities for children to make their own flags and artwork to honour the spirit of the event along the parade route in the city centre. Andrew Comben, Chief Executive of Brighton Festival, said: “Although the festival will feel different from previous years, without the large groups of people

coming together that we’re used to, we have been planning for a festival full of beauty and fun that can still happen with social distancing in place. We believe we can deliver a carefully managed, safe and responsible events programme that will help build confidence with our audiences to bring them back to what they love. Lemn Sissay’s artistic vision, and the way he speaks to the things that really matter, feels even more relevant today and I’m delighted he has brought fresh inspiration and direction to this year’s programme. We’ll be flexible in our planning and remain optimistic that, with the public’s help, the government’s roadmap will stay on track and that the city can look forward to an arts and culture-led recovery.” Brighton Festival 2021 launches on Tuesday 30 March 2021 at brightonfestival.org

Manual weed removal to continue A report to Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, meeting on 16th March, gave an update on Cityclean’s management of weeds. The council developed a plan in 2019 to end

October and no glyphosate had been used in 2020. The weeding schedule was deeply affected by Covid-19 and there were issues with recruitment of staff. Areas were targeted based on feedback, complaints, observations and past experience.

Public consultation: There was to have been a consultation on weeding in 2020, but this was disrupted by the pandemic. A public consultation is now planned for autumn 2021. A cleaning blitz involving local communities is also planned for 28 May to 13 June.

Staff have reported that manual weed removal is a lot harder than with pesticides. The preferred method is using a weed ripper. A new brush attachment for sweepers was trialled; however, it wasn’t strong enough. There are no other pesticide-free products that are effective enough to tackle weeds across the city. Strong salt water will kill weeds but could also damage vehicles and other highway structures.

Residents who would like excessive weeds removed from public land can contact Cityclean on 01273 292929 or email cityclean@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

Trip hazards: The report acknowledges that the growth of weeds around pavement slabs results in trip hazards and will lead to an increase in claims against the council. One concern is that weeds are growing through tarmac where it has been used to replace pavements during construction work and the ground has not been treated. Hoes can’t be used on tarmac without damage to the pavement. Council officers will produce a further report on this issue. Plan for 2021: This year weeding staff will be included in the seasonal recruitment campaign rather than relying on agency staff. Weed removal will be rotated so that crews are using the equipment for limited periods of time, for health and safety reasons. Specific areas will be targeted, using Cityclean’s better understanding of where weeds are kept down by footfall and where more attention is required. Have a local editorial item? 53 Brighton-based comedian Nik Coppin has used lockdown to write his first book…

Nik Coppin’s Comedy World Stand-up comedian Nik Coppin has performed around the world for 20 years. Forced to stay at home in Brighton for the past year, he wrote his first book, “Nik Coppin’s Comedy World”, featuring anecdotes from his adventures on tour. The book has been chosen as a finalist for the Wishing Shelf Book Awards. What is your favourite country to visit? Now, that’s a hard one! There are so many great comedy clubs and wonderful friends I have around the world now that it’s hard to pick them apart.

Who are your favourite comedians? I think Richard Pryor tops that list for me. His stand-up comedy has really stood the test of time and his backstory in finding his comedic voice is fascinating. The amazing storytelling and longevity of Billy Connolly is also right up there for me and what Eddie Izzard has achieved with original offbeat comedy and unusual image has been spectacular too. All very hilarious, inspiring comedians as far as I’m concerned. Are you making any plans to resume touring later this year? I certainly hope I can tour this year with matters regarding the pandemic easing up. The Edinburgh Fringe is looking unlikely in August, so one can only hope that happens and I can get also get back to

GENERAL

Scotland, Spain and Germany are amazing places with regard to mates and shows, and Southeast Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia are the same, but also have many fascinating aspects to them. But I suppose for sheer volume of shows with all the big festivals in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, as well as loads of friends, fascinating parts, wildlife and of course weather, Australia edges it, I reckon. Southeast Asia later this year and Australia in 2022. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you on tour? Some people might think it’s funny me falling into a 4ft drainage ditch in Penang, Malaysia, whilst texting. Being bruised, battered and bloodied wasn’t funny at the time, but in retrospect it kind of was. That I could have died, especially if the ditch was full of water, isn’t really amusing, but turning up at my secure accommodation trying to get past security in such a state probably was. For more details, I guess you’ll have to get my book! “Nik Coppin’s Comedy World” is available from Amazon.

55 City news…

Council looks into recycling pots, tubs and trays At present, only plastic bottles are collected for recycling in Brighton & Hove, but many people have called for other types of plastic to be recycled, as they are in some other parts of the country. Pots, tubs and trays are made from a much cheaper kind of plastic than bottles. PTT in the city is currently sent to the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) incinerator in Newhaven which generates electricity for 25,000 homes. None of it goes to landfill. Some parts of household PTT such as polypropylene are commonly sorted by other local authorities, but some of the other plastic types are harder to recycle and have to be sent on to the incinerator, with added costs. Advantages of recycling PTT: PTT is bulky but lightweight. The estimated yearly total of recycled PTT would weigh around 550 tonnes, increasing the city’s recycling rate by 0.5%. Recycling PTT would reduce the contamination level within recycling bins. This is because many residents already place PTT in recycling bins, believing it will be recycled. The contents of the whole recycling bin are then contaminated and have to be treated as waste. In some cases, a whole lorry load of recycling then has to be treated as waste. Reducing the volume of plastics sent to the Energy Recovery Facility will reduce its carbon emissions.

Disadvantages of recycling PTT: The mixed nature of the plastic material means that only 22-39% of it would be regularly recycled. The rest would be sent to the incinerator and incur a disposal cost. There would be a significant cost to capture the relatively small amount of lightweight material and then to sort and process it. Some PTT collected in the UK is still being exported and disposed of irresponsibly and damaging the environment in developing countries. Once Veolia (the company who have the contract for waste management in Brighton & Hove) have sold the materials on, they will have no control over what happens to them. The report says a feasibility study is needed on retrofitting the Hollingdean Materials Recovery Facility recycling centre to enable it to introduce PTT recycling. Veolia say they don’t recommend adapting the Hollingdean centre to recycle pots, trays and tubs, but they will continue to explore alternative options with the council.

57 A lovely way to remember the lives lost through Covid…

Brighton & Hove Covid Memorial Quilt

A group of women has joined together to sew a quilt to honour the Brighton and Hove residents who died from Covid this past year. Some are experienced stitchers, while others haven’t threaded a needle in 30 years. The idea for the quilt came from Emma Daniel who, along with other Brighton and Hove women, had contributed to The Women’s Quilt in 2017, with each square remembering one of the 598 women killed in the UK by their partners, between 2009 and 2015. What if we created a Brighton and Hove quilt, with names of the (currently) 442 mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends and neighbours who have died from Covid in 2020 and 2021? We all agreed that it would be a hugely worthwhile project and immediately found our fabrics, needles and threads. Squares are currently being sewn, embroidered and embellished, to eventually

become a huge quilt which, we hope, will find a permanent home in our city, so that it can be visited as a place of remembrance. Sewing a square for a stranger is quite a responsibility, especially if you don’t know their favourite colours or interests. But, if it’s made with care and sensitivity, it feels important and is a very moving experience. All the stitchers confirm this. ‘It’s such a wonderful project that I’m proud to be a part of,’ says Louise, who has sewn squares for Thora, Charlotte and Brenda. If you’d like to join the team of stitchers or have a name included, please email bhcovidquilt@gmail.com. You can also get involved via our Facebook group: Brighton and Hove Covid Memorial Quilt Volunteers. https://www.facebook. com/groups/742369290035047 Sue Teddern

Sewing a 10cm square to remember a life lost … it seems such a small thing. But, if a name carved onto a war memorial can offer comfort, then a name embroidered onto a patchwork quilt will surely have the same effect.

61 Healthy living advice from health coach Siobhan McHenry…

Eating hygiene... If you suffer from bloating or discomfort after eating, reflux, belching or gas these can be symptoms of GI (Gastro Intestinal) dysfunction. Good news is you can find relief by adopting a few principles of eating hygiene. It’s just a reminder of how we’re meant to eat and, if we’re honest, we don’t do the majority of them! Read on for some self-help remedies.

Take time to eat - it takes about 20 minutes for your gut to signal to your brain that you’re full and reduce your sense of hunger. If you’ve gulped your food in 10 minutes, you’re most likely going to feel hungry, end up over-eating and then feel bloated 20 minutes later. Try to take 1-2 full breaths between bites.

your daily meals this way - you will see the positive effects.

Chewing - the only part of the digestive process that’s completely voluntary. The less you chew, the harder a GI tract has to work. This creates post-meal fatigue. Ideally you want to chew your food until it’s almost liquid before swallowing. This will reduce gas and increase post-meal energy. Aim for 20-30 chews - less, obviously for delicate foods - but most of us swallow after six!

You owe it to yourself to get the most out of the food that you are consuming. So give your body the required relaxed state and clear your mind from nothing else but the task at hand and mouth!

Try not to drink during meals. We need to be hydrated but the best time to hydrate is in-between meals. When you consume large amounts of liquid during a meal you dilute the acidity and slow digestion.

Brought to you by Siobhan @ healthfullives

Prioritise eating - most of us are in the habit of multitasking while eating, on Zoom calls, watching tv etc. This doesn’t allow your nervous system to fully relax and thus it puts out less digestive fluids. Try sitting with no distraction, breathe, and savour what you are consuming. Try 1-2 of Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

GENERAL

Slow down - easier said than done but digestion takes time and if we’re stressed it takes longer. If you rush meals, a full stomach has trouble mixing acid and enzymes with your food (indigestion). It’s like trying to mix a stir-fry in a coffee cup – there’s not enough room and when it spills over, you burp or may have reflux.

62 City news…

Community champions go Above & Beyond Stories of hope, kindness and humanity have been brought to life on the sides of 24 new Brighton and Hove buses. Brighton and Hove Buses went on a mission to find and celebrate people who have gone out of their way to make a positive impact on other people’s lives. Local community groups and members of the public were invited to nominate. Photos of community champions are now appearing on bus sides with a little bit about their amazing achievements on panels inside. The buses are on route 1, between Mile Oak, the city and Whitehawk. Brighton & Hove and Metrobus Managing Director Martin Harris said: “I’ve heard so many incredible stories of altruism and compassion in this city over the years and felt it was time to recognise and celebrate the people behind those stories.” Some are involved with supporting disabled families, others with keeping the city’s tap water clean, running football sessions for disabled children or connecting isolated people. There are community stars who have shown how table tennis can change the world, or people who have given homeless young people a bit of hope. Among those recognised are Wen Wei Xu and Tim Holtam of Brighton Table Tennis Club; Emily Kenward of local charity Time to Talk Befriending; five members of the Possability People team; Bryan Coyle, who set up the East Brighton Food Co-operative; Sue Mechen, who founded the Tantrum community dance groups; and former mayor Bill Randall, who has devoted many years to battling homelessness, inferior housing and low wages. Another community champion is Bhav

Patel, a shopkeeper in Southover Street, who is known for distributing free packed lunches to children in need. Since the pandemic began, he has also organised food parcels for the elderly and vulnerable, and given away clothes. At Hertford Infant and Nursery School, teachers Zoe McGuigan, Justine Harvey and Rachael Durneen have been busy keeping the school open for those that need it and keeping home learning going. They’ve worked hard to provide lifelines like food parcels and emotional support to the most vulnerable families. Executive Head Teacher Zoe McGuigan said: “Seeing ourselves on the bus has created a few giggles but this recognition highlights and celebrates the excellent work of every school. All our colleagues could be here as we need to all recognise that we have gone ‘Above and Beyond’! Thank you!” To see the full list of community champions, visit busesaboveandbeyond.co.uk

67 News of a temporary exhibition around Brighton…

Art on billboards A temporary exhibition on billboards around town has brought together the work of three acclaimed local artists.

“Pause ။”, supported by advertising agency Ground Up Media, showcases pieces by Judith Alder, Helen Goodwin and Simon Roberts, and is part of a programme of activities organised by Brighton Artists Network to support artists to bring their practice into public spaces while arts venues remain closed to the public. The pieces reflect current events and circumstances in subtle and often poetic ways. Together they create unexpected, thought-provoking contributions to the urban spectacle, turning the street into a visual platform to encourage conversations around how we are experiencing our new reality living with Covid. “Impermanent Edge, Edgelandia (2020)” is on display on New England Road. The photograph shows a chair, rescued from the artist’s small cliff-top wooden cottage in Skipsea, East Yorkshire. It stands on the beach in proximity to where the cottage once stood, before the cliff was taken and swept into the sea. Artist Helen Goodwin said: “The experience made me keenly aware of how communities are forced to resettle and share a sense of impermanence of place; how the earth is forever re-forming and moving, and yet there seems to be an invisible thread that appears to connect us to ‘fixed place’ through the stories and memories we weave into localities.” Judith Alder’s “Cascade: Origins in Parallel (2020)” is a large blue, red and white digi-

“Impermanent Edge, Edgelandia” by Helen Goodwin can be seen on New England Road tal collage shown on a billboard on Upper Hollingdean Road. Featuring photographs of sculptural objects or “clusters” created by the artist, the piece explores growth, change and evolution in the natural and man-made world. “Shrouded Statue #1 (Antonio Canova‘s Theseus and the Minotaur) (2020)” by Simon Roberts, was photographed at the V&A Museum while it was closed to the public during the second Covid-19 lockdown, and is on display on Trafalgar Street. The exhibition is part of a project which has brought Brighton Artists Network members together to support one another to take their artistic practices into public spaces while arts venues remain closed to the public. 69 Fingers crossed that we’ll have a bit more choice of activities this month…

What is likely to reopen in April? This magazine went to print in mid-March, so we are hoping that nothing has changed in the two weeks between then and the start of April. If all goes to plan, according to the Prime Minister’s roadmap we should see an opening up of certain businesses and venues in April.

outdoor gyms

outdoor swimming pools

sports courts (such as tennis and basketball courts)

golf courses, including mini golf

water sports venues

archery venues.

People can use these venues in a group of six people, or with members of up to two households. At this step, formally organised outdoor sport will also return, provided it is Covid-secure. Indoor facilities should not be used, except for toilets, and no spectators will be allowed. Businesses will be able to host outdoor children’s activities for up to 15 people (not counting under-fives). Junior parkrun events will be returning from Sunday 11 April. No earlier than 12th April, non-essential retail and personal care facilities will be allowed to reopen. This will include hairdressers. Indoor sports and leisure facilities will also be able to reopen at this stage, including

gyms, sports courts, swimming pools and dance studios. Public buildings, such as community centres, and libraries should also be able to open. Businesses will be able to host activities for children. Other outdoor attractions will be able to reopen, including: outdoor areas at pubs and cafés; drive-in cinemas; funfairs; adventure parks. Brighton Palace Pier hope to reopen their outdoor areas on 12th April, including the rides, with dining and drinking in Horatio’s garden and Sunset Garden. Self-contained holiday accommodation will reopen for the use of a single household. Small outdoor events can be organised, provided they comply with Covid-secure guidance. Indoor events that bring people together will not be allowed before May 17th at the earliest. For more details and up-to-date guidance, visit www.gov.uk/coronavirus
