Meet a local resident who has an important role at Martlets hospice...

Queen’s Park Person...Gary Moyle Gary Moyle lives in Egremont Place. He is Legacies Manager for Martlets Hospice. How long have you lived in the Queen’s Park area? I moved here from East Brighton just over six years ago. What do you most like about living here?

I am very lucky to live so close to beautiful Queens Park and to be able to see the sea from my house too. Egremont Place is lively and neighbours have become good friends. St James’s Street is just down the hill and so convenient for socialising in the gay village. Tell us about your role at Martlets Hospice...

Martlets helps local people affected by terminal illness and would struggle to survive without gifts in wills which provide over 25% of our annual income. So my role is to help promote gifts in wills to Martlets so that we can continue to deliver free life-changing hospice care to everyone who needs us. I also manage the administration of gifts in wills left to Martlets to ensure that the charity benefits fully and quickly from bequests.

It is a real privilege to witness the generosity of so many people towards their local hospice. 1 in 4 of our patients is cared for thanks to gifts in wills and so it’s really rewarding to help put these donations to good use. Why is it important for people to make a will?

Having a will gives me reassurance that the people I love and the causes I care about will be looked after when I die. My wishes are written down in my will in the knowledge that they will be carried out as I intend. I’m not married and so my will gives

me control over what happens to my house and any savings and even with my funeral arrangements. It gives me peace of mind.

What do you like to do when you’re not working? I enjoy film, theatre and attending events at Brighton Museum and the Royal Pavilion. I love visiting local flea markets and travelling further afield too. I visited Sri Lanka last year and would love to go back there soon to explore the country more. For more information on Martlets Will Writing Fortnight, visit www.themartlets.org.uk/give-inyour-will, contact Gary on 01273 718778 or email gary.moyle@martlets.org.uk

Local Volunteering...

This article is from the Royal Voluntary Service...

Royal Voluntary Service

At Royal Voluntary Service (previously known as WRVS) our volunteers have been playing their part in hospitals since the NHS began in 1948. Today, they still give over a million hours of voluntary service each year. Royal Voluntary Service is one of the largest volunteering organisations in the country. Throughout our history we have been inspired by people’s generosity, by those who give the gift of time through voluntary service, doing small deeds for a greater purpose. Today, we are continuing this work in order to support vulnerable people at home in their communities and relieving the pressure from NHS services, offering a friendly face in times of need.

Locally, at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, our volunteers generously give their time to support the six coffee shops across the site; new volunteers are always welcome and much appreciated. Our cafés offer visitors and busy staff a welcome hot drink, sandwiches and healthy snacks. The Big Trolley Push was launched in Brighton earlier this year and volunteers, staff and visitors to the hospital are benefiting from the ward trolley service. It’s often the little things that can brighten a patient’s day; a daily paper, a light snack and a friendly face can make a big difference. After only a few hours, or maybe just ten minutes, volunteers appreciate just how great it feels to make others smile! As a trolley volunteer you’ll be amazed by the effect one conversation, one laugh from someone who spends their days alone, or a heartfelt ‘thank you’ can have.

If you would like to give a few hours of your week to your local hospital please contact us for a chat and find out what we have to offer. Please call us on 01273 664976 (9.30 - 4.00) or visit www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk

Turning? Look out for cyclists

Royal Voluntary Service is all about bringing communities closer together, whichever side of the trolley you’re on! There’s nothing lonely about our volunteering roles! You could end up building lasting friendships with both the patients and the other volunteers, enriching your life as much as your company enriches theirs.

A recent member of our trolley team Linda Sheldrake from Saltdean is enjoying her experience with us. So much so that she has recommended a friend to join us too. “I love the interaction with the staff and patients and feel I am enhancing their day.” See this logo on adverts and find local reviews of that business at www.trustedandlocal.co.uk

Local news...

An update on local parking schemes...

Residents’ parking schemes update Over the last few months the council have been talking to residents and businesses in the St Luke’s, Hanover and Elm Grove areas about how their parking schemes are working and whether they would like to change the hours and/or days of operation. As a result, some changes were put to the council’s Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee on 19th March.

The St Luke’s Area residents’ parking scheme currently operates between 10-11am and 2-3pm seven days a week. Because it is only enforceable for a couple of hours a day it is known as a ‘light touch’ scheme. 70% of respondents in this light touch scheme (Zone U) supported joining the neighbouring Queen’s Park zone (Zone C), which currently operates a full scheme from 9am to 8pm seven days a week. Councillors agreed to proceed with changing roads in Zone U into Zone C from 1 June 2019. Freshfield Street and Queen’s Park Rise are currently in the light touch Zone S, but when roads in Zone U join Zone C, they will be surrounded by roads with parking enforcement from 9am to 8pm. The committee agreed

that an initial consultation be undertaken with residents in these two roads to see whether they too would like to join the Queen’s Park scheme in Zone C or remain in Zone S.

There will also be further consultation of residents in a small number of streets known as the ‘top triangle’ (Arnold Street, Baxter Street, Carlyle Street, Cromwell Street, Lynton Street and part of Queen’s Park Road) to find out whether they would like to join the Zone V scheme.

Local Activities... The Brighton Festival is back...

Brighton Festival 2019...4-26 May Featuring over 130 events with artists and performers from more than 20 countries, Brighton Festival 2019 is a space for contemporary expression from around the world, from 4 to 26 May 2019. This year’s guest director is Malian musician Rokia Traoré. As always, the Festival will include free and participatory activities for all ages, beginning with the annual Children’s Parade on Saturday 4 May - this year’s theme is folk tales from around the world. Without Walls bring a visually spectacular group of outdoor events, including a day of family friendly performances on the beach level at the British Airways i360.

Recognised cultural figures will bring new work. Authors Ben Okri and Jon Ronson discuss their latest publications; Grammy award winner Neneh Cherry performs songs from her new release, Broken Politics; and comedian Ruby Wax will teach us how to be human. There’s also a series of one-hour daytime concerts featuring classical stars of the future.

A lunar model will light up Queen’s Park; photo by Ed Simmons

Marking 50 years since the first moon landings, Brighton will have its very own moon with artist Luke Jerram’s realistic illuminated lunar model lighting up the sky above Queen’s Park. The model is seven metres in diameter and features mind-boggling detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. Museum of the Moon’s blend of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround-sound composition created by awardwinning composer Dan Jones will offer a unique experience to all. (Free, Fri 17 May, 6pm to Mon 20 May, 12pm.) Another free event in Queen’s Park is Ghost Caribou, a night-time street act by Thingumajig Theatre. Giant illuminated creatures, part caribou, part spirit, roam a mystical world after dark, accompanied by a wild herdsperson. As they gather a crowd, they clear a space to perform their otherworldly ceremony. (Free, Sat 18 May, 4.30pm walkabout, 9pm full show.) There will also be a community workshop in Queen’s Park, The Storytelling Army. The theme is food and flavours that people have experienced; stories of where they come from; places they have been; or the places they dream to taste. Join people from all walks of life to enjoy a simple meal together and hear their stories. (Sat 18 May, 6.30pm, Queen’s Park, free but ticketed.) Not long now till the carnival returns...

Kemptown Carnival – 1st June

The Kemptown Carnival returns in style on Saturday June 1st! The event will run from 10am until 6pm with the official after-party taking place on Brighton Palace Pier in the evening. Photo by Sofia Barbas

The Carnival Community Parade kicks off the celebrations at 10am with hundreds of local participants involved. Exciting new Arts Council funded works will also be showcased within the parade; local artists, performance groups and carnival arts makers have been working together to create five original professional performance pieces. The parade begins from St Mary’s Church and heads through Kemptown Village along St George's Road to launch the festivities. For the first time, the community parade is open to the general public to dress up and join in the fun! Parade participation packs are available via the Crowdfunder, details of which are on our website kemptowncarnival.com.

After the community parade has launched, the day’s entertainment will continue with live music stages and performance areas across Kemptown Village playing an incredible mix of jazz, reggae, folk, blues, world roots, afrobeat, funk, swing, samba and more. The doors of St Mary's Church, St John the Baptist and St George’s Church will be open to the public throughout the day, providing a space for charities and community groups, hosting children's creative workshops, entertainment, fairground rides and music from many of Brighton’s wonderful choirs.

There is something for everyone at this year’s carnival....youth dance troupes, street theatre and Brazilian flash mob fun, Morris dancers, belly dancers, singing groups, circus skills performers, Capoeira performers and community samba bands are all taking part.

Local businesses will be coming out onto the streets with a delicious range of food and drink alongside a vibrant street market showcasing arts and crafts, vintage goods, and scrumptious cakes and sweets.
