Welcome to the May edition of your local publication! So once more the Brighton Festival is here. We hope you enjoy it and find lots of interesting things to do. There is almost too much to choose from, so the best policy is don’t try too hard…just decide on something and go – otherwise the whole month can pass you by in a flash.

Page 7

I have found it is usually the event that you aren’t too bothered about attending that turns out to be the best one, and waiting for the one that sounds amazing can often be disappointing!

So there you go, whether you wanted it or not, there is my festival advice! We do have other things in the magazine this month, so stick the kettle on and have a read!

What is your name and where in Queen’s Park do you live? I’m Edi Mandala. I consider myself a Brightonian, having brought up children here. I live near our beloved Pepper Pot. How long have you lived in the area? I have lived on Queen’s Park Road for 14 years; before that, Kemp Town (2 years), Fiveways (2 years) and Preston Park (10 years). What do you most like about living in Queen’s Park? I enjoy the benefit of vistas, living on a hill; the weather is more impactful: sea mists roll in, but when the sun is high it looks like St Moritz. It’s comforting knowing that we are 10 minutes from the town, the Downs and the sea.

“OUTSTANDING”...OFSTED

Historical aspects fascinate me, such as the demolished railway and recent excavations up on Whitehawk Hill that showed evidence of early settlers coming from North Africa. What would you most like to see improved in the area? I hope that the current social climate encourages us to develop a huge potential for more ‘community skills/ sharing’ in all forms. A mosaic mural depicting our local area might bolster the neighbourhood... We notice that you do community development projects as well as doing mosaic portraiture and installations. How did you find yourself doing that? Through my work as an art therapist, I have come to believe that ‘living is an art form’, because we simply couldn’t solve any problems without creativity.

i Mandala I have always excelled at portraiture/making beautiful pictures for people, but mosaic design adds a functional element that has enduring practical uses. There seems to be a pervasive modernist belief that ideal ‘perfect environments’ are places that show no evidence of personality, which I feel dehumanises, so I like to be involved in working on projects that inspire people, reflect their tastes and reinforce their sense of belonging – that’s how I ended up running workshops, installing wet rooms, kitchen splashbacks, working with landscape gardeners, as well as doing portraiture/commissions. What is the most enjoyable part of your job? I come from a diverse background, so enjoy meeting people from all walks of life - anything from solving décor problems, making gifts for loved ones or sharing the artmaking process - the pleasure comes from learning. How could someone see more of your work? Following a sabbatical in Venice, I currently display ‘Romanesque’ techniques at the JAG Gallery on Madeira Drive on Brighton seafront. What is your greatest claim to fame? I have performed as a singer with a number of famous vocalists that I admire over the years. But as an artist I am satisfied with the reward of transforming domestic and working environments that reflect the aspirations of people living inside them. This is happening right now, up and down the country, and in some other countries too.

Musical Bumps

Musical Bumps may not be the biggest early childhood business out there, but we strive to be the best. So what is it that makes us stand out from the crowd? Real music – our repertoire is chosen to enable children to learn. The songs and games we use all have a purpose; many support the steady pulse, some will prepare the way for language development, others will help children to develop key social skills, or musical skills. Nothing happens by accident! Our teachers are all trained to deliver real music - with specially commissioned backing tracks for our dances, shake-alongs and just a few hand-picked songs, there’s no singing along to pre-recorded songs at Musical Bumps! Real education – All our teachers are carefully trained by recognised experts in the field of music and of early childhood education. We like to keep right up to date – thus ensuring that Musical Bumps fully supports the EYFS curriculum. Real fun – We know children learn best through play – our classes are playful and engaging. We have enough percussion and puppets for everyone to use,

as well as colourful resources to support circle games and dances. Many of our children who attend would like every day to be a “Musical Bumps day”. But don’t just take my word for it – come along and see for yourself! Whether you’re keen to bring your child to one of our classes, joining our team of teachers, or planning on inviting us to work at your nursery, why not get in touch today? Musical Bumps have classes in Lancing, Brighton and now at The Hanover Community Centre, 33 Southover Street, BN2 9UD. Food review...

13

The Walmer Castle Review by Anne-Marie Krolick Walking into the Walmer Castle was like stepping into a good friend’s living room. With all the clientele being greeted with a bright hello, whether it was from the staff or the other regulars, everyone seemed right at home. By 5.30pm on this lovely spring evening, the pub was already buzzing with people obviously attracted by the Tuesday night ‘2 for 1 meal deal’, so, as the children settled down to do battle with a brilliant Star Wars chess set (every pub should have one!) the grown-ups bravely faced up to the challenge of the Specials Board! With an extensive menu of homemade food featuring locally sourced meat and fish, the choice is almost overwhelming, but in the end we both opted for a home-baked pie: mine, a vegetarian version with wild mushroom and asparagus, whilst my partner couldn’t resist the steak and chorizo. As we waited for our meals to arrive, we couldn’t help notice the other diners’ dinners as they emerged from the kitchen: hearty looking steaks and towering

burgers, brightly coloured fresh salads with golden fried new potatoes topped with a whole crispy fried rainbow trout. Regret for our choice fleetingly flashed across our minds! But we needn’t have worried - as soon as our platters arrived, all comparisons ceased as we set to our amazing-looking fare. The pies were encased in a crispy golden pastry, firm to the bite, but then crumbled and melted in the mouth, the contents packed with hearty chunks of rich wild mushroom and fresh al dente asparagus, bound together in a delicious creamy sauce. The steak and chorizo was flavourful, sweet and tender. Although the meals we chose were part of the special 2 for 1, there was absolutely no skimping on the quantities, with generous portions of veg and enough mustardmash potatoes to recreate any mountain range of your choice, topped with a golden fluffy yorkie and doused in a lake of rich, dark gravy. In spite of being full to breaking point, somehow we managed to find a tiny space for desserts! Whilst our little one tucked into a knickerbocker glory the size of his head, we shared a tasting platter of puddings which included a dreamy crème brûlée, moist chocolate gateaux, ice cream, fresh fruit and a mound of super-sticky-sweet chocolate deliciousness! All in all, the Walmer Castle offers incredible value for money without compromising on taste and quality, with different deals every night of the week and a roast which is served right up until 9pm on Sundays. This pub is a great option whether you are looking for somewhere for a special celebratory night out, or just fancy a bit of a mid-week treat.
