A local update…
News from the Friends of Stoneham Park When the BBC aired David Attenborough’s acclaimed Blue Planet II late in 2017, its effect on single use plastic was seismic. Almost overnight, plastic straws went. Use of mineral water fell and the charge on supermarket carrier bags doubled. Few of us would disagree that reducing the amount of disposable plastic is a good thing. But we mustn’t be too pious about it. Sometimes plastic is a necessary evil. At our Midsummer Fair we had no option but to use disposable plastic glasses in our beer tent. But we mitigated its use by getting the brilliant Jackson Waste Disposal company to recycle and dispose of our litter free of charge. Living on the coast means we have a special responsibility to be careful with our litter. During the very warm weather in the summer, I was struck by how many overflowing waste bins there were on the seafront. People had left black plastic bags and carrier bags next to full bins which had been pecked open by seagulls. The result was more litter strewn about the beach and the promenade. It is a racing certainty that a proportion of that litter gets blown into the sea. And once it catches marine currents, it becomes a global problem. Indeed, it is a problem to which we will have contributed. Sadly, when the seafront is busy resources are diverted down there and the inland parks get less attention. We have found that our litter bins don’t get emptied anywhere near as often as they should when the beaches are packed. The bin by the café is particularly problematic, as it is the most convenient for most people. The bins in the preschoolers’ park are also often overflowing. And when that happens, the seagulls come and make the place even worse!
An all-too-familiar sight
We suggested to the council three years ago, or so, that the bins in Stoneham Park be rearranged in a more scientific way so there were more in places that actually needed them, but they were unwilling to co-operate. This is a shame, because early most mornings the park looks a total mess with rubbish strewn all over the few bits of grass we have. If you feel strongly on this, or other issues, why not come to our next meeting in the George Payne on Tuesday 3 September at 7.30pm? You’d be most welcome. Richard Hearnden

A NEW TYPE OF DINER
We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.
Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.
Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

Local news from Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth...
Councillor News... Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I have had some rather good news over the past few weeks that we wanted to share with regard to our campaign to bring greater road safety and more trees to the Portland Road area. The first bit of news is that our request for the replacement of the four missing trees outside Wish Park Surgery (foot of School Road) has been successful. They were all damaged by motorists parking on the pavement but this problem is now sorted. The trees should be going in later in the year. We have met with the Head of City Parks to look at locations for the seven trees that we were able to secure as part of the Mainstone House development on Marmion Road / Mainstone Road. Five are likely to go on Mainstone Road and the other two in Stoneham Park. Sadly, and separately, two of three new trees in Stoneham Park have died so we have requested that these are replaced. This should hopefully take place later in the year too. Just around the corner, on School Road, we have been able to secure £50,000 towards new trees as part
of the redevelopment of the Westerman Complex (Westows, etc). The proposed locations are School Road and outside the front of the school on Portland. We are particularly keen to see trees here as it very much chimes with our campaign to reduce pollution levels around the two schools. On this subject, we are currently requesting the return of air-monitoring equipment to Portland Road so that a proper case can be made for further funding for greenery along the school boundaries. One kind resident has actually lent us a particulate monitor which we will use to get some test data shortly. A further £69,000 is to be paid by the Westerman developers towards Stoneham Park. We hope that some of this can go towards a ‘wildlife corridor’ in the southwest corner of the park. This is backed by the Friends of Stoneham Park and has so far received helpful design tips from garden designer Sadie Honeybun.

Finally, and not at all linked to the above, it’ll be no surprise that the Administration has allowed the King Alfred deal to fall apart after years of delay and millions of pounds being lost. We think that a new scheme should just be about sports and leisure – if there has to be housing then its purpose should be to pay for the community facility. Cllr Robert Nemeth, Wish Ward Poets Pages is happy to publish views on local issues. This doesn’t mean it either agrees or disagrees with subjects covered. Local pub...
New Head Chef at The George Payne... We heard that The George Payne had a highly rated new Head Chef, coming from a background of working at The Ivy and Cote in Brighton so we thought we better check out what was on offer so we sent local residents Emily and Jim along to sample the menu. Here is the report they came back with…
Firstly the venue…The George Payne has a lovely clean and open feel, it is tastefully decorated and has ample space for restless kids. Although we didn’t have our children with us this is definitely a good family venue. We picked a quiet lunch time and were warmly welcomed by Emma and presented with the menus - the menu was not overly complicated with hundreds of different things to choose from; it consisted of a good varied range of food to suit all tastes and it was described in a way that could be easily understood. The descriptions certainly made the mouth water and having made our choices we eagerly awaited the arrival of our food. The food arrived within a respectable time period…we always feel getting your food too quickly is almost as bad as having to wait too long but this was just right! I opted for the cider braised pigs cheek with Parmesan mash, charred leeks and crispy onions. This was beautifully presented and would not be out of place in any high end restaurant. The
pork melted in the mouth and was cleverly complemented by the other flavours on the plate. My girlfriend chose the red pepper and walnut pesto marinated ‘Fu Fighters’ chickpea tofu with a saffron sauce and edamame beans. The title was certainly a mouthful but Emily reports that each mouthful consumed was delicious. Within an embarrassingly quick period of time, both our plates were clean. The dessert menu beckoned but due to our happily content state we declined and made a mental note that on our next trip we would embark on the dessert menu too. So all in all a great local place to eat for the all occasions right on our doorstep!
At The George Payne you will find dishes served in a home-cooked style, featuring daily food specials and a children’s menu. Fresh coffee is available all day from 12 to 12 alongside a selection of cakes and biscuits. The Sunday menu consists of a good selection of meat and vegetarian roasts accompanied by a range of home-made puddings reflecting our individual style, plus locally sourced ice cream. The drinks selection includes real ales, ciders, good quality wines along side a varied selection of soft drinks. 18 Payne Avenue, Hove, BN3 5HB, United Kingdom. A great opportunity to visit interesting places from 13th to 22nd September...
Heritage Open Days 2019 It’s the 25th year of the Heritage Open Days festival; the country’s largest festival celebrating our diverse history, culture and environment. It’s an opportunity to visit some places not ordinarily accessible, and best of all everything is free! Booking for events in the greater Brighton and Hove area is co-ordinated by the Regency Town House, with all events listed on their website: www.rth.org.uk/ BHOD19. Once again, there’s plenty going on across the city, including in our part of West Hove. Not least with the opening of the Secret Garden, tucked behind St Leonard’s Church, New Church Road; the Secret Garden is a secret no more – last year it won the Best in Britain Community Garden “Outstanding” award. This year, local tourist guide, Tania Noddings, is offering her new guided walking tour of Rottingdean as part of the festival: ‘Rottingdean - Smugglers and Storytellers’. This tour is on Wednesday 18 September at 2pm; with pre-booking required. For more information, please see ‘Sussex Tours’ on Facebook.

Free PSA tests organised by Brighton Lions at Bishop Hannington Church...
Free PSA testing for prostate problems The PSA test is a blood test that measures the amount of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by normal cells in the prostate and also by prostate cancer cells. It’s normal to have a small amount of PSA in your blood, and the amount rises as you get older and your prostate gets bigger. A raised PSA level may suggest you have a problem with your prostate, but not necessarily cancer. Brighton Lions, in conjunction with the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation, hold PSA testing sessions from time to time. The test involves taking a blood sample which is sent to a hospital laboratory for analysis. The result will be sent to you by post or email within two weeks or so. Only trained nurses will perform the tests, which are free of charge to men aged between 45 and 80. Our next testing day will be Saturday, 28th September 2019 at Bishop Hannington Church, Nevill Avenue, Hove. Book an appointment online at www.psatesting.org/ events/hove or, if you cannot book online, call 0845 650 2555.

You can play netball at the King Alfred Leisure Centre...
Netball club in Hove is looking for new recruits Thousands of women across the UK are discovering a great way to get fit which is fun, friendly and you probably last played at school – netball. With England hosting and doing so well in the recent Netball World Cup it is more popular than ever. UK figures reveal it’s one of the fastest growing participation sports for women with more than 156,000 women of all ages, from 25 – 60 years, playing every week across the country. It’s also a great alternative to working out in the gym or jogging. We’re a netball club in Hove originally set up in 2013 by a small group of friends who wanted to try out the traditional school sport again. The group has grown through word of mouth and online marketing, but we are still looking for more players. Players say it has become ‘the highlight of my week’ and ‘brilliant fun’. Fast-paced and great exercise, netball remains a really good game to play. Although we’re mainly meeting for fun, the competitive element means you push yourself a little bit more. And when you’re concentrating on getting the ball, you forget you’re actually doing exercise. Netball can burn up to 600 calories a session with its fast, explosive sprints and longer jogs, improves upper body strength and flexibility with its quick changes of direction, plus helps hand-to-eye co-ordination. We have two fantastic coaches/umpires who take turns to teach us. Each session we meet and do gentle warm-
ups and stretches followed by some ball skill and tactic training. We then play a friendly game with players choosing what position to play and with regular breaks to swap position and have a breather. We’re open to all and operate a drop-in policy. Just turn up and play, £8 per person. We play on Wednesday evenings from 7.30 – 8.30pm on the indoor netball courts at King Alfred Leisure Centre, Kingsway, Hove. The first session back after the summer is 11th September. Please do come and join us. If you’d like to know more email Helen at helenholt45@gmail.com or contact Helen on 07789 912360.

An event at Bishop Hannington Church in Nevill Avenue...
A big event coming up at Hove Lagoon...
The Cobweb Orchestra visits Hove!
LagoonFest
The Cobweb Orchestra is an open-access, multi-award-winning orchestra based in the North of England where it comprises a regional network of local community groups meeting weekly, and a programme of weekend events open to all.
7 September, 11am-4pm at Hove Lagoon
On Saturday 5th October a contingent of the orchestra will be coming to Bishop Hannington Church for a study day on Mahler Symphony No 1. If you play an orchestral instrument, you are invited to join in with the friendly group of players who will look forward to meeting and playing with you. Music will be provided. The workshops will run from 10am–12.30pm and 1.30-4.30pm, with a shared lunch. Informal performance at 5.30pm (estimated finish 7pm). For more information go to www.stephaniecant.co.uk or email christine.ball1208@live.co.uk to book.
Last year’s inaugural LagoonFest was very successful and attracted thousands of visitors who watched skate jams, had their faces painted, fell off paddle boards, saw a man on stilts feed sausages to dogs, watched the artist Cassette Lord at work, and danced to Jivin Jim Dandy, local bands and Fatboy Slim. This year there will be more stalls and a greater variety of activities. Newcomers are the Purple Turtle Therapy Tent, Coastway Vets Dog Show, 3D and Sand Art and many more. All profits will contribute to the Friends of Hove Lagoon planting scheme. For more information or to volunteer, email friendsofhovelagoon@gmail.com.

Bloodline Wills and Care Home Fees... Can you avoid your house being sold to pay for care home fees? The answer in some cases is yes but unfortunately it is sometimes no. If you are a couple (married or not) you can do a lot with your wills to help with this. There are also some big mistakes that you need to avoid. 1. Deliberate deprivation of assets. If you have intentionally decreased your assets in order to reduce the amount you are charged towards care fees and the local authority can show that you knew you were going to need care when you did this, it can overturn your actions. This doesn’t mean you should give away your house to your children just in case you might need care. 2. Lifetime gifts to children. In theory you can give everything to your children before you die or go into care but there are some real risks. If your children own part or all of your house and they happen to die before you, unless their will leaves the house to you, you may have to sell! Similarly if a married child gets divorced, the house will be part of their assets for the divorce settlement and again, you might have to sell.

3. Lifetime gifts to a trust. This can be a good solution but only in a few situations and not usually appropriate for your home. 4. Solutions for couples. The best solution for a couple who own their own home is to make sure they have the right sort of wills and own the house in the right way. There are two options: 1. Beneficial joint tenants (owners). 2. Tenants (owners) in common. 5. Beneficial joint tenants. This is the default option and is good for younger home owners because if one of them happens to die, the house automatically reverts to the other. For older couples tenants in common is better. 6. Tenants in common. This way you each own half of the house. On death, with the right will, one half can go into a trust which means it cannot be used to pay for care if the survivor requires it. With the right trust, the survivor can still live in the house (and downsize if required) but the half in the trust is protected and can pass on to the children on second death. This also protects against the surviving spouse remarrying and the house going to the new spouse. 7. How can Camrass Wills help? We can advise you what is best for your situation and make sure it is correctly documented. We can tell you how you own your home – the Land Registry documents do not use either of the phrases, beneficial joint tenants or tenants in common! Local history from Rachel Bridgeman...
The streets of Hove not paved with gold... Standing on the junction of Sackville Road and Hove Street, breathing in the car fumes and listening to the sound of traffic, it is hard to imagine that this thoroughfare started off as a track for driving cattle along (called Hove Drove), connecting the ancient village of Hove to the Downs. This road has borne witness to many events over the centuries – caravans of smugglers’ horses laden with contraband heading for their hideouts; militia men and clip-clopping cavalry horses preparing to defend these shores from Napoleonic invasion; fleets of ambulances during the Great War bringing wounded soldiers to one of the three military hospitals in West Hove and Poets’ Corner; renowned poets out for a stroll; Hollywood stars; and future kings of England wandering down to the beach, towel under arm, for a swim. Even the last century has seen a huge change - a traffic census in August 1911 recorded a total of 1,529 vehicles (634 horse-drawn vehicles, 70 motor cars, 215 hand-barrows and 600 bicycles, as well as 4,570 pedestrians). The Victorian and Edwardian eras were those of horsedrawn traffic and that was reflected in the road surfaces used - the streets of Hove were paved with a variety of materials over the years: granite macadam, quartzite stone; flint and wood. Wood was a popular option, as stone caused a terrible din from iron horseshoes and carriage wheels. On the downside, it absorbed the horse manure and urine and, on hot days, the stench could be noxious. George Street, Church Road and Western Road were all paved with wood at one time or other. Macadam roads also tended to be insanitary for the same reasons, causing contaminated mud and wind-blown dust. In dry weather,

watercarts made regular rounds through the streets of Hove spraying water to lay the dust, filling up with water from water standpipes. To learn more about the history of Hove, join a guided historical walking tour led by a local historian and tour guide. Hove Actually Walking Tours are fun, informative, informal and best suited to the incurably curious.
