News from the Friends of Stoneham Park...

New gardening group for Stoneham Park Our local park certainly looked beautiful covered in February’s lovely white surprise and now the days are getting longer, flowers are beginning to show for us to enjoy. You still need to look hard, but the crocuses by the pigs are just poking through, there’s flowering Daphne in the eastern bed and the native daffodils planted last year are fit to burst with colour. SIX NEW TREES will be arriving in the park. A new elm and Hungarian oak have been purchased from our fundraising events. Councillors Robert Nemeth and Garry Peltzer Dunn secured three trees from the Marmion Road corner development for what will be the new wildlife corridor in the park and, thanks to a kind donation from a local resident, a new cherry tree will also be planted. NEW GARDENING GROUP: As part of FoSP’s ‘greening the park’ activities, a new gardening group will be starting thanks to a Healthy Neighbourhood Fund grant from the West Hove Forum, FoSP funds and support from B&H Cityparks. The first phase is to clear and define areas of the park and focus attention on the

Sad news about a talented resident of Marmion Road...

Obituary - Nick Cory-Wright (1964-2019) My friend and neighbour, Nick Cory-Wright, died in January aged only 54. His funeral at Woodvale was packed with his family, friends and colleagues from the world of television and film, where he had made his name as an editor, director, producer and executive producer. If you were fortunate enough to know Nick, it meant not only that you were in the company of a real creative talent but, as it happens, only one degree separated from the Hollywood A-list. Nick was born in Lewes and raised in East Sussex. As a child he developed an eclectic musical taste and a love of collecting things which were to see him through his life. He could be spotted making things out of the amusingly unconventional objects he collected or cutting odd pictures out of books and framing them. Nick made a career out of his creativity. After a spell in Sheffield, he moved to London in his early 20s. It was there that Nick set foot on the first rung of the film and television ladder. He began work in the cutting rooms and climbed his way up, landing a major job on the cult classic Eurotrash, with Jean Paul Gaultier and Antoine de Caunes. The show was infamous for its risqué reports from around Europe, for which Nick was the features director and creative mastermind.

He moved on to produce and direct Killer Queen!, a feature-length documentary about Freddie Mercury and the legendary rock band, was the producer on the one-off The Curse of Noel Edmonds and on The Johnny Vaughan Show. But it was the esoteric that gave Nick most professional satisfaction. His directorial magnum opus was a featurelength homage to Spanish filmmaker and genius Pedro Almodóvar, and was regarded as his most successful project. Children’s television earned Nick his greatest recognition. He won an Emmy as the executive producer of Pet School, a programme teaching kids how to look after animals. Nick met his third wife, Anna, while working as an executive producer making reality TV shows and docudramas in Toronto. He loved Canada so much he had a road sign on the wall of his kitchen in Marmion Road. It was an arrow pointing left. ‘Points to Canada’, was the rationale, naturally. And as for the one-degree separation from Hollywood’s A-list? One wet evening in south London, he stepped outside a studio for a cigarette. Who should ask him for a light, but Robert de Niro. He is survived also by three daughters and a son. Richard Hearnden

This article is by Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth...

Portland Road Survey... A series of worrying safety incidents on Portland Road triggered Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and me conducting the most thorough ever survey of resident opinion on the street. To get the best possible response, we surveyed every single Wish Ward resident individually and raised funds personally to provide a Freepost response. It seemed to hit a nerve as around 1,000 people responded – and we are very grateful to each and every one of you! The results certainly made for an interesting read and were most varied indeed. We share many of the concerns that were put to us. Perhaps most concerning, 52% of those with knowledge of the schools have concerns about safety at drop‐off and collection times. This number really should be much lower. Many presumably agree as 63% would like to see more parking enforcement from the Council/Police. We have requested this immediately. Since carrying out our survey, we understand that the Council may soon consider reducing the speed limit on Portland Road to 20mph. 41% want to see the limit

reduced which is less than the 45% who want to see it remain as it is. We will provide the Council’s Transport Team with this information. There are strong feelings either way on this point. We were interested to see a fairly even split on the subject of extra pedestrian crossings. 39% want more crossings and 34% do not. Many residents provided helpful suggestions of where crossings might go. Finally, on the subject of cycling, the result was most polarised. Many expressed very strong feelings about how dangerous the pavement cycling problem is in our area. Others were quick to mention how dangerous it is to cycle on the road. The two positions are clearly linked – if cycling on the road was safer, it would be much easier to tackle the pavement problem. We have now identified significant funds through the Section 106 developer tax that can go towards safety measures around the schools. We are closely in touch with the Council’s Transport Team now to discuss exactly where this money will be spent and hope to report back in detail soon. We are working with the schools on this point and have chatted with many parents at the school gates. A similar survey has been conducted by our colleagues in Westbourne Ward – Ivan Lyons and Charlie Nicholls – who will be circulating their results shortly.

Local history from local resident Rachel Bridgeman...

Local History....Tip and Run Seventy-six years ago – at 4.55pm on 9th March 1943 – Hove experienced its worst air raid of the Second World War, with 12 people killed and 33 injured.

Air raid damage in Hove; 8th August 1942 ©Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove

The attack came with no prior warning. The first that was known was when a Luftwaffe plane came hurtling along the Western Esplanade, machine guns strafing the seafront as it went; the anti-aircraft guns spread at intervals down the front had no time to take aim. Amherst Crescent, Walsingham Terrace, Rutland Gardens and Shelley Road would take the brunt of the attack. These “tip and run” raids were a common experience in Hove. The raiders would fly low over the Channel by day at top speeds, suddenly appearing out of nowhere, machine gun people in the streets and drop bombs. Then disappear again almost before their bombs exploded.

AIRPORT TRANSFER

A 92-year-old local resident recounted his memories of the event to me a couple of weeks ago. He had moved to the area from Portslade because his house there had sustained bomb damage during a previous attack on the Portslade Gasworks. “I was delivering newspapers,” he recalled, “and there was a plane overhead. When the first bomb went off, I lay flat on the ground and was hit on the top of my head by a piece of flying shrapnel. The explosion shook my bones, they were like jelly. At home we didn’t have an Anderson shelter, so we hid under the stairs. When I looked at the house in Shelley Road, the staircase remained, but all the outside was down.” The house at Walsingham Terrace, where Irish MP Charles Stewart Parnell had once lived, was irrevocably damaged by bombs. Among the dead at No. 1 Shelley Road was a retired Scotland Yard detective inspector, famous for his work on the East End’s most notorious case of the 1880s and 1890s. News from the Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum of their eighth Have Your Say Day…

We’re nearly there... After five years’ hard work, the Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum is now in the final stages of developing the Neighbourhood Plan which is focused on establishing a new Hove Station Quarter by ensuring that the local community has a real say in the large-scale regeneration process now gathering momentum. At our AGM in Ralli Hall on February 28th, we launched the legally required six weeks consultation on our Regulation 14 Consultation Draft Neighbourhood Plan. Guest speakers were expected to include Liz Hobden, the city’s chief planner, and James Blakey, the Managing Director of MODA, responsible for the planning application for the redevelopment of the former Sackville Trading Estate and Goods Yard which is currently being considered by planning officers.

event will be the 8th Have Your Say Day, to be held at St Barnabas Hall (Honeycroft) on Saturday March 23rd 12.00-4.00pm. We’re also having workshops in March at the Vallance Centre on key Neighbourhood Plan issues - Housing and Developer Contributions, and Traffic and Parking - and on the Plan’s Community Hub Projects for Hove Station, Sackville Road-Conway Street and Stoneham. For details see www.hovestationforum.co.uk.

To ensure that everyone living and working in the Neighbourhood Area has a final opportunity to comment on the Draft Plan we will publish the full version on our website along with a short summary – with opportunities to comment. Paper copies of the summary will also be available at a series of public events in the period up to the Easter holidays. The big [TypeÊtext]Ê

A new business in Portland Road...

Jack Smith Estate Agents... Jack Smith has set up a brand new estate agency in Portland Road, Jack Smith Estate Agents. Why did you decide to set up a business in Portland Road? Both Portland Road and Poets Corner are very attractive and appealing locations. The neighbourhood is well regarded as having a vibrant and community feel to it. It is popular and desirable to set up home in due to good accessibility, charming appearance and fantastic amenities. This makes it inclusive for every generation and serves to give a quality of life we all aspire to. Why did you choose estate agency as a career and do you have prior experience in this field? Having gained experience since the age of 17 working in local independent estate agencies in Brighton & Hove, now at the age of 23 I feel that I have gained enough insight in the business to provide a service which will exceed expectations. My family have been very instrumental in my choice of career. Both of my grandfathers began working in estate

agency from an early age. My mother, grandmother, father and uncles also invested their time and energy in helping countless individuals and families find a new abode. I am very proud to continue my generation of service in estate agency following on in what has been a family tradition. I hope to be able to emulate my predecessors’ successes and one day be held in the same highly revered regard as they were during their careers. How does your business differ from other estate agents? By carrying on a fine tradition of quality customer services and care. The latest technology combined with a good old-fashioned style of attention and service I believe will enhance and create a memorable property journey. I will, as director, be personally involved from start to finish of the process and will have a hands-on approach. I will also guarantee to beat any other estate agency on service and letting fees. I am also offering a very attractive rate of 0.5% sales fee on all properties. I will dedicate time and personal attention to all. What’s the housing market like at the moment in Poets Corner? Demand for property in the area remains high. An area such as this will always experience a continued demand. As mentioned previously I feel that it is due to the fact that this is a welcoming community inclusive of every generation. Quality or quantity? A bit of both for Hove’s fastest-growing football club...

Poets’ Corner FC Winter Update... As a football team playing in the Mid Sussex League but with great relationships and regular matches against Brighton & Hove clubs, we get to see a staggering cross-section of coaching philosophy. At one end you have the ‘win at all costs’ group, who pressure team members, turn away those not stepping up, and take pleasure out of hammering sides every week. At the other end of the spectrum you have teams who are just happy to be offering football, who are completely driven by participation and for whom the scoreline is incidental. At Poets’ Corner Football Club, we place ourselves somewhere in the middle. On the one hand there is no greater thrill than checking our club What’s App group as the Sunday roast gets dished up… watching the videos of our goals, hearing the stories and reading the match reports when we’ve sent three different sides off on three Sunday morning away adventures. At the same time we believe the idea of striving for success and being ambitious is something that should always be encouraged. You won’t see it promoted in any Football Association blueprint (who believe participation

alone is enough), but of course we want our players to win. Sure, we don’t want to turn over sides 12-0 every week – that is pointless, demoralising for all concerned and doesn’t help anyone on the pitch in their development – but players investing effort in their sporting hobbies deserve that feeling of reward, even if the governing body doesn’t believe they’re interested in results, league tables and the like. Trust me… they are. Ultimately, it’s the combining of these principles that has fuelled a huge surge in players joining us this year. We have trebled in size in six months, with over 30 kids aged nine and ten, all enjoying competitive matches every weekend. And this expansion will continue. Over the summer we’ll assess additional age groups for next season, so if you’re interested in your son (or daughter) coming along to Poets’ Corner Football Club, contact us via our Facebook page (search ‘poetscornerfchove’). Combining participation with a desire to achieve and succeed makes the all the investment worthwhile, from sun-baked Tuesday night summer training to kit orders, registering players to arranging lifts and taking down the goals in the pouring rain. And to all those clubs who turn away players because they’re not miniature nine-year-old versions of Harry Kane – guess what… the more they play, the better they get!

Update from your Local Action Team...

News from the West Hove Forum The guest speaker at our last meeting at the end of January was Rachel Chasseaud, who has been in charge of the council’s Cityclean and Cityparks departments since September. Rachel acknowledged that Cityclean had been having problems; a modernisation programme has started but it will take a while to turn things around. Last year they couldn’t recruit enough drivers and had to prioritise the collection of non-recyclable waste. Rachel told us that Brighton & Hove recycles around 30% of its waste. The national average is 44%. We do, however, have one of the lowest rates in the country for waste going to landfill because of the energy recovery facility in Newhaven, which fuels about 25,000 homes across East Sussex. The issue with pots, tubs and trays – the plastic we don’t collect – is that there would be nowhere for it to go, as China doesn’t take it any more. There has been a trial scheme for dual litter/recycling bins at Hove Lagoon. The recycling bins were initially contaminated by plastic glasses and coffee cups, but this has improved with additional information stickers. They aim to introduce dual litter/recycling bins along the

Recycling being sorted at the Hollingdean Materials Recovery Facility whole length of Brighton & Hove seafront by May. Rachel said that the situation with graffiti tagging had deteriorated in the city over the last couple of years and the council has developed a graffiti reduction strategy. There is a graffiti removal team, but their duty is only to remove graffiti from council property and they are struggling to keep up with even that. Postboxes etc are the responsibility of the organisations that own them and private property is the responsibility of the owners. The fine for tagging is only £75, unless the offender has a whole history of tags, and it’s difficult to get enough evidence for this. Cityclean would like to have a database of tags on the council website. They will also explore whether property owners should be made to remove graffiti from their own properties. Ingram Crescent Gardening Club The Ingram Crescent Gardening Club would like to recruit new volunteers. They meet in the Rose Garden every Sunday from 10am to 1pm and on weekday afternoons. See “Ingram Crescent Gardening Group” on Facebook for more information, or phone 07931 354367. Everyone is welcome and you can share the harvest.
