Happy Christmas to everyone in Poets Corner! Christmas is fast approaching and December will be an eventful month with a General Election to add to all the festivities. In this month’s edition of Poets Pages we have details of plenty of Christmas events in Hove, including the Christmas Market in Stoneham Park. Our Poets Person is Susan Luxford, who runs Timeless Toys in Portland Road and sells plenty of non-plastic toys if you’re looking for environmentally-friendly Christmas gifts. See our centre pages for a special Christmas message board from local businesses. Please use our wonderful local shops for your Christmas shopping if you can. We wish you all a peaceful and happy festive period! News from the Friends of Stoneham Park…

Stoneham Park Christmas Market & Santa’s Grotto The cover of this issue of Poets’ Pages is a photograph of last year’s Friends of Stoneham Park Christmas Market and Santa’s Grotto. This year’s event will be on Saturday 7th December between 11.00 and 15.00. We hope the rain will stay away and it will be a success. December is a good time to look back on what was achieved in the year 2019. The first event of the year early in April was our spring clean sale where over 20 local residents came to sell stuff they no longer needed. The park was packed in the spring sunshine that day. We organised a little treasure hunt for children which went down very well. On Easter Sunday we did a bigger version of the treasure hunt, with an Easter egg hunt in the park. Clues were pinned to the trees with rather wonderful chocolate Easter eggs given as prizes for collecting the answers to the clues. This led rather nicely to our summer fair in June with the teacups ride, bouncy castle and inflatable assault course. After such a big event (not forgetting the food, Pimm’s stall and beer tent), you would be forgiven for

thinking that was enough for the year! But the last weekend in October saw our Halloween Festival. There was pumpkin carving in the park, cookie decorating in the Snug café and, upstairs, our fantastic haunted house maze, hosted by Theatre Pipe Dream. The whole event was a tremendous success, judging by the long queue snaking out of the café as people waited their turn to be terrified in the haunted house! Theatre Pipe Dream will be back at Christmas, putting together the Santa’s grotto in the same upstairs room of the café. It is always very popular with young children and we hope to see many of you there. The Christmas Market will be in the Holy Cross Church hall, as in previous years, with additional stalls, hot mulled wine and street food in the park itself. We will also have our fabulous prize draw, with tickets already on sale in some local businesses. Many shops and businesses on and around Portland Road have kindly donated the prizes and the raffle will help us raise funds to try to improve the park in little ways we can. Better still, we hope we have brought cheer to the park by ensuring there is always something fun going on there! Richard Hearnden

Meet a local resident who has her own toy shop...

Poets Person...Susan Luxford Susan Luxford runs Timeless Toys at 103 Portland Road, which opened in April this year. How did you come to set up Timeless Toys? After having my son three years ago, I became increasingly interested in wooden toys. At the same time, commuting to London and managing nursery pick-up had become extremely stressful. Looking for a solution, I noticed the lack of shops within Brighton & Hove selling the range of fantastic wooden toys I’d become familiar with. I have worked in the charity sector for over 10 years and the brands I stock are already ahead in the toy industry for their sustainability and ethos to best practice. The issues of plastic, pollution, waste, destruction of forests and climate change are big issues we are all concerned about. It seemed a natural fit therefore to open Timeless Toys. Tell us more about the shop... I sell a wide range of ethically made plastic-free planetfriendly toys for 0-6 year olds. Many toys are Montessori and Waldorf inspired, all battery-free and all in a range of rainbow colours. There are familiar toys such as arks, farm and animal sets, castles, vehicles and play kitchen items, as well as toys that are more unfamiliar. Do you have anything different on sale for Christmas? I have a French brand called Tegu which is a system of magnetic wooden blocks, great for 3+ years and Lego lovers. I have Tegu car, robot and rocket sets. This is such a unique product. I also stock a Spanish brand called Grapat. Beautifully handcrafted, their simple tactile and bright designs really appeal to babies and toddlers.

Timeless Toys is at 103 Portland Road and is open from 10am to 5pm. During December they will be open Sundays and for late night shopping every Tuesday. For more information, see Timeless Toys on Facebook.

What is your most popular toy? Lanka Kade animals and dinosaurs. They are robust and chunky and a great price at ÂŁ2.99 each and appeal to a wide age range of children. They can be paired up with favourite songs and books and children love to collect them. Being in an area with lots of farms to visit, the farm animals are particularly popular. What do you like to do to relax? Any spare time I have is usually spent with my threeyear-old son. We are often to be found locally enjoying Stoneham Park, heading to the seafront or enjoying a local train or bus ride.

Empire Cinema The entrance to the Empire Cinema in Haddington Street, off Blatchington Road, in 1929. The cinema opened in 1910 and was Hove’s first cinema. Talking pictures, introduced later in 1929, presented difficulties which the smaller cinemas found it hard to overcome. The Empire changed over to sound films in 1930 but the competition of the larger cinemas was too severe, and it closed in 1933. There’s no need to spend Christmas Day alone...

Christmas lunch at Hove Methodist Church Hove Methodist Church are getting ready for the Christmas Day Lunch for local people who might otherwise spend the day alone. The hall will open from 12 noon and will be warm and welcoming; lunch will be served at 1pm to be followed by entertainment, a cup of tea and Christmas cake. Everything will be over by 4pm so that guests can get home before dark. Transport can be arranged for anyone living in postcodes BN3 or BN41 who is unable to get to the church on foot. (Unfortunately they are unable to transport people in wheelchairs, as volunteers’ cars are not adapted.) The lunch is free with support from local businesses. Hove Local Christmas Market The Hove Local Monthly Market was set up in August 2018 to create a space for local artists and craftspeople as well as small businesses to show and sell their work alongside Brighton and Hove residents wishing to sell unwanted bric-a-brac and collectables, and it has slowly developed into a vibrant and sociable environment. We would like to invite you to our Christmas market on Saturday 7th December between 1.30-5pm at the Cornerstone Community Centre, Church Road, Hove. Come and join us at this friendly local market selling quality handcrafted items such as candles, cards, calendars, children’s backpacks and illustrations, jewellery, pots and planters, delicious vegan food, upcycled art and bric-a-brac/vintage. There will be toys, aerial shots of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Amex stadium, Christmas decorations, aromatherapy oils, ecofriendly cleaning products and the list goes on. Check out the market’s Facebook page - www.facebook.com/ HoveMarkets/ - to see what is in store for you. Warm welcome guaranteed.

News from Martlets hospice...

Cuddle-beds boost for hospice thanks to Skerritts Martlets, the local charity which provides life-changing hospice care, celebrated the delivery of two large ‘cuddle-beds’ courtesy of Hove businessman Richard Skerritt and his company Skerritts Financial Planners. The cuddle-beds will help patients who are being looked after at the hospice in Hove to be as close to loved ones as they would be at home, something standard clinical beds make difficult. Ruth Tierney, Nurse Ward Manager at Martlets, commented: “I can’t begin to express what a difference these beds will make and we are so grateful to Skerritts for their amazing generosity. The tears of joy when our team heard they were arriving were not just mine! What a marvellous Christmas present these beds will be as they will allow loved ones to be as close to the person needing care as they would be in their own homes. This kind of intimacy and normality can make all the difference to the well-being of both people, bringing comfort and very personal space at difficult times.” Martlets care is free to people who are over 18 and live in Brighton & Hove. As a charity, Martlets is only partially funded by the NHS and relies upon the generosity of the local community to keep hospice services running.

Local history from Rachel Bridgeman...

Christmas 1916 - the third Christmas at war As the schools on Portland Road are decked with beautiful, handmade decorations and reverberate with children singing Christmas songs, it is hard to imagine the Christmas scenes in those same classrooms just over a hundred years ago. 1916 is remembered as the year in which the armies of Europe and her global allies bled to death. The year started with the introduction of conscription in Britain and the death throes of the Gallipoli campaign; continued with the slaughter of a million men in the war’s longest battle, Verdun; the Battle of Jutland bore witness to 8,500 casualties in a few brutal hours; and the Battle of the Somme, which commenced with the bloodiest day in British military history, ended with 1.5 million casualties. This manifested itself locally on a day-to-day level with the weekly publication of lists of missing in the local newspapers and the convoys of ambulances departing Brighton Station for the 25 military hospitals around the towns of Brighton and Hove, both major locations for the treatment

This photograph of wounded soldiers at the Portland Road School military hospital, Christmas 1916, is courtesy of East Sussex Record Office, The Keep (Ref: AMS 7312/3/4)

and convalescence of wounded soldiers. In fact, it was in Hove, just three days after Britain declared war on Germany, that the first military hospital in the entire country was mobilised. In June 1915, one of the largest military hospitals in Hove was established at the requisitioned Portland Road Schools. The local press praised the Portland Road Hospital as “unique among its fellows ….. with a glorious sea view. The only local hospital that has all its wards on the ground floor; the only one with a large dining hall and recreation room in the very centre of the building; and the only one, with a fine open-air ward looking straight to the sea.“ To learn more about the history of the Portland Road Hospital and the history of Hove during the Great War, join a guided historical walking tour led by a local historian. Hove Actually Walking Tours are fun, informative and best suited to the incurably curious. Whether it’s your first visit or you have lived here your whole life, the tours are a great way to discover, uncover and experience the area. Other tours cover the history of the villages of Hove and Aldrington (through the ages). For information: email hoveactuallywalks@gmail.com or Facebook (Hove Actually Walking Tours). Don’t forget to vote in the General Election...

News from the council...

Election Candidates

New Electric Vehicle Charging Points

These are the candidates in Hove for the General Election on Thursday 12th December: Beatrice Bass (Liberal Democrats)

More than 200 new electric vehicle charging points are set to be installed across the city over the next few months.

Dame Dixon (Official Monster Raving Loony Party)

Following a tender process, the council has appointed Electric Blue to install and maintain the electric vehicle charge points. The project is being funded with £300,000 from the Office of Low Emissions, and £100,000 from Electric Blue.

Angela Hancock (Brexit Party) Peter Kyle (Labour Party)

The 207 new points will include 30 in areas with high parking demand where the council are proposing mandatory Electric Charging spaces, many of them in response to requests from residents who own or are thinking of buying electric vehicles but have no off-street parking available.

Robert Nemeth (Conservative Party) Charlotte Sabel (Independent)

Lamp post chargers: Most of the charging points will be installed on lamp posts and will provide a full charge for vehicles parked overnight. These will be installed by January next year. A mobile phone app showing the locations of all points in the city and whether they are in use will be available to download. Drivers will pay 28p per kilowatt hour to charge their vehicles at the public points.

Fast chargers: Fast chargers, taking around five hours, which are already installed in the city centre, will be integrated into the new app. The council will consider installing further fast chargers outside the city centre if there is a clear demand from residents. All the public charge points will be powered by renewable energy. The council has also been awarded £86,265 research funding from Innovate UK for a trial of smart network extenders, which increase the number of vehicles which can be charged at each point.

An update from your Local Action Team...

News from the West Hove Forum... Beach Hut Advent Calendar The Hove Beach Hut Association are taking over the running of the Beach Hut Advent Calendar from Beyond Church. There isn’t enough time to plan and organise the event properly for this year but they intend to run it next year.

Stoneham Bakehouse’s Bread Shed group

Healthy Neighbourhood Fund Grants Following presentations at our last meeting in October, grants from the 2019 fund have been awarded as follows: Hove Junior School PTA will receive £500 to plant a green wall of shrubs and small trees along the playground bordering Portland Road. This will enable many children whose homes have no outside space to experience greenery and gardening. The planting will also absorb some of the traffic fumes and provide a screen from the main road.

Ingram Crescent Residents Association’s Rose Garden Group will receive £500 to create a bird feeding station which will enable all garden users to enjoy watching bird activities from the nearby benches. The Vallance Community Centre were awarded £500 to support their austerity cooking group, community healing group and over-50s line dancing group, as well as an IT teacher for the IT drop-in group. Stoneham Bakehouse were awarded £500 to run further sessions of their fortnightly Bread Shed group for over-55s, in which 25 people come together every two weeks to bake bread. Group members feel less isolated and form lasting friendships as well as finding new joy in baking. The Secret Garden Group (behind St Leonard’s Church) will receive £500 to reduce the volume of tree growth around the garden, as trees shade the growing area. They also plan to build a gazebo to offer shelter for garden activities. Say Aphasia is a charity for people who can’t get their words out, usually following a stroke. They run a drop-in group every week in Hove for 25-30 people. They will receive £500 to ensure that they can continue to raise awareness of aphasia and organise day trips so that members can regain confidence in communicating in everyday situations. West Hove Forum meetings are attended by ward councillors and a wide range of community representatives. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 29th January 2020, venue to be confirmed. If you would like to attend on behalf of a group or business, please email westhoveforum@gmail.com.

Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre sent us this fabulous photo...

From The Keep archive… This glorious celebration of civic pride looks a little bit like an Advent calendar with all the windows opened! It even follows a similar design, with the most important person at the centre surrounded by his associates of higher, and, as you spread outward, lesser ranks.

Irreverence aside, there is something quite moving in Hove Council’s response to the great event of 1953, the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II. One can imagine how each of the 41 individuals prepared for their photograph. They would have made sure that their fur-trimmed gowns, hats and gloves were spotless. They would have been at great pains to stand in a position which showed their figures to the best advantage, holding or wearing their accessories just as protocol dictated. In the centre is His Worship the Mayor of Hove, Councillor AE Brocke; below him is Mr Stevens the Town Clerk. Around them are ranged the Aldermen, while the Councillors fill up the edges. The five ladies are wearing gloves and hats, while the gentlemen hold their gloves, tucking their hats under one arm.

Brighton and Hove Archivist at The Keep Andrew Bennett says: ‘This huge image probably had pride of place in Hove’s old Town Hall, and luckily for us it somehow escaped the fire which destroyed the building in 1966.’ Lindsey Tydeman www.thekeep.info
