A silent movie with live accompaniment at St Mary’s Church...

This mobile farm shop now visits Kemptown...

News of a new exhibition...

The Sussex Peasant at St George’s Church

Stephen Jones Hats

The Sussex Peasant is a mobile farm shop and pop-up restaurant, visiting villages and towns across Sussex for a few hours each week.

The shop offers 100% Sussex produce, harvested the day before: pasture-fed native and traditional breeds of beef, lamb, pork and chicken; locally caught fish; locally produced cheese and other dairy products; home baked bread, cakes and pastries; jams, chutneys and drinks. The business launched in 2017 and is now in the car park outside St George’s Church in Kemptown on Fridays from 9am to 6pm, with a very positive reaction from customers. Ed Johnstone started the business by restoring an old horse truck and converting it into a shop. He told us: “I was disheartened to read that just 1% of food farmed in the home counties remains in the counties to be eaten. I have built a co-operative of sustainable Sussex farmers to supply our customer base with the finest local and seasonal produce. The produce’s provenance is behind everything I do. Our farming is sustainable, our food is traceable, our approach is socially and environmentally minded.” Current seasonal produce includes purple sprouting broccoli, cauliflower and kale. They do a seasonal Sussex vegetable box, a weekend breakfast box, or a Sunday roast box. Boxes are either delivered or customers can pick them up from the shop on Fridays.

Glamorous hats from one of the world’s top designers are now on show at the Royal Pavilion until 9th June.

Stephen Jones Hats at the Royal Pavilion sees the spectacular state rooms filled with exquisite hats created by master milliner Stephen Jones OBE. During his 40 year career, Jones has dressed the finest heads from across the globe – most recently the Duchess of Sussex, as well as Lady Gaga, Kate Moss and Mick Jagger. Highlights include: a ‘dinner’ in the Banqueting Room for the hats of the most famous wearers including the Duchess of Sussex and Kylie Minogue; and hats from ‘Chinoiserie-on-Sea’ – Jones’ homage to the grandeur of the Royal Pavilion, including hats inspired by its famous domes. Our local history article from Katherine Prior at St Mary’s Church…

Local History...A Child of Empire ‘Mrs Dick & Dighton’ reads the handwriting on a Victorian carte-de-visite by the Brighton photographic studio of Hennah and Kent. Mrs Fanny Dick and her son Dighton, by Hennah & Kent,

It is enough of a clue to uncover the story behind an attractive portrait of a mother and her son. ‘Mrs Dick’ was Fanny, the wife of Captain Alfred Abercromby Dick of the Bengal Army. He had died in 1874, and it seems likely that the photo shows Fanny as a widow, wearing the muted tones, crape and jet jewellery of half-mourning. Fanny’s family, like her husband’s, was heavily involved in Britain’s imperial rule of India. Her grandfather, Francis Macnaghten, was a judge in Madras and Calcutta; her father, Elliot Macnaghten, was also a judge in Calcutta and afterwards Chairman of the East India Company; and her uncle, William Hay Macnaghten, had been a prime mover in Britain’s ill-judged war with Afghanistan in 183942, which ended, for him, with his assassination in Kabul in December 1841.

Brighton, c1875

Fanny and Alfred’s son, Dighton Hay Abercromby Dick, was born in the northern Indian city of Allahabad in 1869. He is about six in this photograph and wears a plaid, presumably of the Clan Macnaghten. The photograph was taken most likely when Fanny was visiting her father Elliot at Ovingdean House. This fine Georgian house had been built by Nathaniel Kemp in 1792. Elliot bought it and the surrounding farmland in about 1858 and lived there, effectively as Ovingdean’s lord of the manor, until his death in 1888. The 1881 Census records Dighton attending Windlesham House, a boarding school in Norfolk Terrace, Brighton. After training at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, he joined the Indian Army and fought against Afghan forces in Tirah in 1897 and in the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa. He retired with the rank of Major in 1910, but returned to active service in France during the Great War and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. After the war he and his wife Lilian retired to Dinard in Brittany. When the Germans invaded France in 1940, the couple were interned in a prison camp at Besançon, near the Swiss border. Dighton died there, aged 72, on 28 February 1941. It’s hard to reconcile this very twentieth-century death with the image of the little Victorian boy in the velvet suit but that is a measure of the enormous social and political changes his life had spanned. Revised plans for Madeira Drive...

New plans for open-air swimming pool Sea Lanes Brighton have submitted a revised planning application for a temporary 25m open-air swimming pool and leisure facility on the former Peter Pan Playground site on Madeira Drive, following the council’s rejection of their original plans in December. Joe McNulty of Sea Lanes Brighton said: “We are delighted to be re-submitting what we believe to be a much-improved scheme. Rich and Nathan at We Like Today have done a great job in reconsidering the design in line with existing seafront buildings and the Terraces. We have been able to move the pool up the beach in line with Yellowave and reduce the loss of public beach, whilst maintaining all-inclusive access to our scheme. Green roofs have also been added to support biodiversity on the site.”

Artist’s impression of the new proposals

They say their long-term ambition is to build a 50m pool. Initially they are building a 25m pool to prove the concept will be a success. Sea Lanes Brighton and the council are working towards a decision in April. You can view the planning application and make comments on the

council’s planning register. Visit planningapps. brighton-hove.gov.uk and search for application BH2019/00293.

Paul Thomas on springtime entertainment...

Entertainment in March...Spring Forth! Starting with St David`s Day on the 1st, March has a lot in store come what May! Find some Serenity with Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, in the “steamy noir thriller” from 1st. Keira Knightley stars in war drama The Aftermath, from the same Friday. The Brighton Wind Farm Tours are running throughout March. Caribbean Queens will sing-along with Billy Ocean at the Dome, 2nd. Don`t flip out, flip a few pancakes instead on the 5th aka Shrove Tuesday. Ash Wednesday follows on the 6th heralding the start of Lent, where practising Christians traditionally give something up for 40 days. For some, giving up the news will be a desired option… World Book Day for the UK and Ireland is 7th March. Children get a £1 book token via school etc and there are many £1 books in bookshops. Captain Marvel opens on the 8th, with Brie Larson battling to save earth in a galactic war. Dido releases Still on my Mind, no pairing with Eminem is expected on this album, 8th. The theme for Commonwealth Day is A Connected Commonwealth, 11th. International Women`s Day is celebrated for free at the Dome, 9th. I Talk Too Much is Francis Rossi`s Status Quo autobiography, 14th. Quirky and acerbic comedian Simon

Amstell directed the bittersweet comedy Benjamin featuring former Merlin Colin Morgan. Showing at the Duke of York’s Preston Circus and followed by a Q+A with Mr Amstell, 14th. Try and find a four-leaf clover on St Patrick’s Day, 17th. Despite appearances to the contrary, it is not a certain stout`s birthday. Heralding the new season, the Spring Equinox, 20th, might offer a visual feast in the night sky. The Doctor`s Kitchen - Eat to Beat Illness by Dr Rupy Aujla offers prevention in paperback, 21st. Want to spring clean and need tips? How to Clean your House by Lynsey, queen of clean, also 21st. Tim Burton`s take on the iconic Dumbo flies to the screen, 29th. British Summer Time starts on Mother`s Day, 31st. Book that table and flowers early and put the clocks forward. Hopefully the weather will take note of the change in season and let some sustained sunshine burst through. Make March momentous. Paul Thomas

The latest column from Catherine Considine...

How to make a park …

It’s five to nine on a bright, fresh Saturday mornin Dottie’s Café in East Brighton Park, with a loudspe A small, expectant crowd waits in front of me. Some hop from foot to foot to keep warm, others check dog leads are secure; a couple tuck toddlers into buggies and clear mud from the wheels. I take a little nervous breath and hold the loudspeaker to my mouth. “Good morning parkrunners,” I begin. “Let me tell you about the course.” And I do. I explain that they will start up the slope that runs from the café to the top of the Terraces; then all across the top terrace to the park entrance at Wilson Avenue. We call this the Lonely Heart Bend because it is the farthest part of the course and the runners will take a U-bend here back to the Terraces and down the Slippery Slope. After that there is a lap of the football course, a dash past Dottie’s and onto a second lap, this time along the middle

… run

ng and I am standing on the grassy bank outside eaker in my hand. terrace; and finally a round of victory along the lowest path. In the past few months I have gained a forensic knowledge of the park’s contours because around the end of last year I joined a small group of volunteers on a mission to make East Brighton Park – run. Or more specifically to make a parkrun*.

*parkrun is an international movement to provide a weekly free, timed, 5k run for local The course was born one evening in September as half communities. East Brighton parkrun takes a dozen people, and one dog, trekked the park with a measuring wheel. We tried out turns and slopes and possible place every single Saturday at 9am. Check out our Facebook page (East Brighton parkrun) collision points; and all the while the sun set in shades of orange and purple around us. It was only when we looked or our website (http://www.parkrun.org.uk/eastbrighton/) up we remembered we were creating something beautiful. to sign up and join in or volunteer. Back on the grassy bank it is time to call it all into life. Catherine writes about Love, “Ready EB parkrunners?” As one they turn to the start line.
