HOVE PARK There will be a nationwide commemoration of the First World War Armistice...

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY On 11th November a nationwide day of commemorative events, “Battle’s Over”, will mark the centenary of the end of the First World War and pay tribute to the millions killed or wounded in battle, and those on the home front who helped ensure freedom survived. At 6am 1,000 pipers around the world will commence the day’s commemorations with the traditional Scottish lament played at the end of battle – Battle’s O’er. At 6.55pm buglers will sound the Last Post at more than 1,000 locations, where at 7pm World War One Beacons of Light will be lit in a tribute signifying the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of four years of war. Then at 7.05pm 1,000 cathedrals and churches will ring out their bells in celebration of peace and more than 140 town criers will join in an International Cry for Peace around the world. The Church of the Good Shepherd in Dyke Road will hold a Service of Remembrance, with Eucharist, at 10.15am on 11th November, which will include the reading of the names of those who died in the two world wars and a short talk by World War Two pilot Bill Polley. Some of Bill’s personal memorabilia will also be on display, along with a parish map detailing the houses

of the dead soldiers. Following the service there will be refreshments in the hall. The CAMEO group at Bishop Hannington Church in Nevill Avenue will be having a Remembrance Day quiz morning on Thursday 8th November from 10am to 12 noon (tea/coffee and chat for the first hour and quiz in the second hour).

HOVE PARK Our regular healthy living article from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health...

ARE SMOOTHIES A HEALTHY OPTION? I see people grabbing ready-to-go smoothies from the canteen and, just this week, a gym buddy said that her new personal trainer had told her to have smoothies as part of a new dietary regime to lose four pounds from around her waist. My friend’s a size 10. So my first thought is, “Do you really need to lose weight and not just perhaps tone up?” Her normal diet is rich with vegetables coming from Mauritius so it is likely that she’s easily getting her five-a-day. What benefit is there in having a smoothie which usually has a high sugar content? Added to this is the fact that shop-bought varieties are lower in fibre and micronutrients. Plus, if it’s around your abdomen that you’re aiming to lose weight from, carrying weight here can be due to stress and other aspects of your diet and exercise. Then there’s the worry that personal trainers might drive us towards an unrealistic unhealthy model-inspired version of the perfect body. This runs the risk of a healthy person ‘over-doing’ the diet and exercising, and causing the body to kick back and hold on to weight because it’s under stress. The body will act to preserve the body’s balance, referred to as homeostasis. You are always better aiming to get your vitamins and minerals in the form of a meal or whole fruit and vegetables, plus they are more filling and lower your calorie intake. Don’t be fooled into thinking a smoothie is necessarily a healthy option. Mary Henderson

HOVE PARK An article by local resident and keen photographer Stephen Batey...

BRIGHTON AND SOUTH COAST SNAILWAY Gardeners are usually not very keen on snails, but recently fifty giant snails have spread rapidly around the city in aid of the Martlets. Many are in parks and gardens and the snails seem to be adopting different strategies to escape the notice of the gardeners.

In Hove Park, Persephone keeps a wary eye open for the approach of gardeners.

Over in Stoneham Park, Home Sweet Home appears to have managed to remain inconspicuous and is being overlooked.

In Palmeira Square, Soraya aims to blend in by providing a floral display.

Junior snails are also around. Appropriately there are no less than nine of these in the Open Market where there are fruit and vegetables as well as flowers. HOVE PARK News from the council...

FIND OUT HOW YOU COULD BECOME A LOCAL COUNCILLOR If you’ve ever had concerns about where you live or you want to get involved with the public services Brighton & Hove City Council provides, becoming a local councillor is one way you can become a voice and a decision maker for your local area and the city. On 2 May 2019 voters in Brighton & Hove will choose the local councillors they want to represent them on Brighton & Hove City Council for the next four years and the council wants to make sure that anyone interested in becoming a local councillor can find out more about the election process and the crucial community role. They hope that people from a broad range of backgrounds will stand for election to become local councillors to reflect the diversity of our community. This is why they are holding two meetings for you to discover if you want to become a councillor.

Learn more at the public meetings in November

I gained confidence. What will you gain when you lose? 07729997592 cwploisdonohoe@gmail.com @cwploisdonohoe

The council are holding public meetings in November 2018 where you can hear from the Chief Executive Geoff Raw and the senior management team about the services the council provides and you’ll also have the chance to meet current councillors who can tell you what it’s really like being a councillor, what you’re likely to get involved with and what you’ll have to do if you’re elected. It’s also your opportunity to ask questions like ‘Do I get paid?’, ‘What support will I get if I’ve never been a councillor before?’ ‘What is the statutory role of a councillor?’, ‘What can I actually change?’, ‘How do local government finances work?’ and ‘Do I have to join a political party to become a councillor?’ (The answer’s no. You can stand as an independent councillor.) The meetings are as follows: Thursday 8 November from 6pm to 8pm at Hove Town Hall council chamber Tuesday 13 November from 10am to 12 noon at Hove Town Hall council chamber There’s no need to book and you’re welcome to drop in at any time. If you need any assistance, email democratic.services@ brighton-hove.gov.uk or phone 01273 291066. If you have any questions about being a councillor, you can get in touch with the council on their Facebook page (Brighton & Hove City Council) and Twitter account (@BrightonHoveCC) and they will be happy to help.

This money will enable the school to further develop the facilities and accommodation on both the Nevill and Valley campuses and is in addition to the money already agreed for work to build a new canteen on the Nevill campus, which will start in the summer term. Hove Park School have also announced a community partnership with Legal & General, Hove, based in The Droveway. They will be working closely with Legal & General to give pupils the chance to get involved with lots of activities connected to the world of work, sport, wellbeing, IT and the community. To start the partnership, pupils will be joining Legal & General volunteers for Children in Need where they will help on the night in the call centre.Other planned events include a Dragon’s Den-style project where Legal & General leaders will judge the best idea.

HOVE PARK A new display at Brighton Museum...

VOTES FOR WOMEN On 6 February 1918, eight million women, out of an electorate of 21 million, were given the opportunity to vote. Only women over the age of 30 with educational and property qualifications were allowed to do so. Marking the centenary of the first women being granted the vote, a new display at Brighton Museum highlights Brighton & Hove’s suffrage heritage and features objects belonging to Brighton-based suffragette and social reformer Minnie Turner. Minnie Turner was arrested three times for her suffrage activities. Born in 1867, she ran her home as a guest house which attracted mainly professional women visitors. For 12 years she was the honourable secretary of the Hove ward of the Brighton & Hove Women’s Liberal Association, but left the Liberal Party because of its lack of support for women’s suffrage. In 1908 she joined the Women’s Social & Political Union (WSPU) and turned to militarism. By 1913, her house at 13 Victoria Road (Sea View Boarding House) had a reputation as a militant suffragette boarding house and her guests included Emmeline Pankhurst. Minnie kept a small library of books on the social position of women for her guests to enjoy. She believed passionately in suffrage and social justice. She was elected to the Brighton Board of Guardians soon after the First World War and for seven years she committed to improving conditions in the Brighton workhouse on Elm Grove. When she died in 1948 many organisations sent representatives to her funeral at the Downs Crematorium. For more information visit brightonmuseums.org.uk

22 Our regular book review by Hove resident Anne Doyle...

CALYPSO BY DAVID Keeping your eye out for local author events is a must if you’re a keen reader and going along to hear favourite authors talking about their new work is my idea of a great night out; it’s sociable, usually very good value and often there’s a free glass of wine thrown in. I’ve often heard David Sedaris reading from his books on Radio 4 but when I spotted an event on Waterstones’ website for just £3 it was not to be missed. Normally he speaks at much larger venues these days with the huge growth in his popularity since he first started out as a fledgling writer and raconteur in New York City. So at this relatively small venue with an audience of around 75 present it could be classed as intimate. Launching his previous book Theft by Finding which had just been published he was his customary entertaining self with, as always, expert comic timing and it was wonderful to share in this event. His quirky family has been his main source material since he first got published. Over the years I’ve read most of his books following his entirely individual

D SEDARIS take on life pivoting around growing up in North Carolina, his move to Normandy and then more locally to West Sussex. In Calypso, juxtaposing with the humour for the first time is a glimpse into the darker side of his family too. Now in his late 50s, he’s got that broad perspective and maturity that just comes with age, or should that be ingrained habits and, just let’s face it, some decidedly unusual eccentricities; which all makes for comic gold of course as he amuses with his tales of his beach house off the Carolina coast, unconventionally named ‘Sea Section’, where he, his partner and remaining adult siblings take the opportunity to get together. His travels to Japan offer an insight to his outlandish sense of fashion while we learn too why the roads around his home near Amberley are particularly litter free. Exasperation with the customary anodyne greetings and relentless up-selling of shop and hotel staff suffused with the homogeneity of current American English is a stone that is turned, examined and thrown through a nearby glass window. This latest book is definitely one of his best. HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

THE FALL OF THE COPSE It’s autumn, when several of our members feel that the copse is looking at its best, as the beeches turn colour and cover the woodland floor with a copper and gold carpet. But blink and you’ll miss it. The gusty winds will take away the colours overnight, so if you feel like venturing through the best woodland in Hove do it now. In New England, famous for its colours in the “Fall”, some special properties of the climate, cold nights, warm sunlit days, perpetuate the colours over several weeks, and the sugar maples are the star attraction. Our autumn spectacle is a tad more unpredictable, and unfortunately, no sugar maples. However we do have a large amount of squirrel activity. Hundreds of grey squirrels are busy there, collecting acorns and beech nuts and hiding them in the woodland floor (called caching). They don’t hibernate in winter, but remain in nests and dig up their buried food to survive through the cold season. Much of the nuts and seeds remain uneaten and hidden, and sprout in the spring; in this way the squirrel population will enhance the pace of forest renewal, as well as entertaining the interested dogs that walk along the paths.

Looking for an alternative to kennels? Or maybe you would like to welcome a guest dog into your home for his holiday?

Give your dog a holiday! Your dog will stay as the only guest in the family home of one of our highly experienced, vetted, insured & Council Licensed Carers. You will meet your dog’s Carer & see where he will be staying before the holiday at one of our “sniffing out meetings”. Because of our glorious summer this year, there is also a proliferation of ladybirds, some days, in these woods. You have to pick your day, but on a warm wind one can find that there are clouds of these creatures drifting in the wind. The main population is now the harlequin version, and they have been with us since 2004, and are now an established native to our parks and countryside. I have mentioned the lack of plastic carrier bag litter in the copse in previous articles, and it seems that since the ban in October 2015, according to Keep Britain Tidy, we have used 9 billion carrier bags less than previously in a similar time. In light of the recent gloomy news about climate change it’s good to hear a positive outcome of some environmental action for a change, and also good that we don’t have to pick up as many from Three Cornered Copse on our litter picking expeditions. We have two work days left this year; weather permitting, as we have to say, the next one is later this month on Wednesday 21st November. All welcome to come along and help tidy the copse up for the winter. Simon Baxendale

News from Brighton Open Air Theatre in Dyke Road Park...

BOAT’S MOST SUCCESSFUL SEASON YET

The Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) had its final event of the season at the end of September. This soldout show, a sizzling hot summer and a crackling programme of new and established works have all helped to make 2018 BOAT’s most successful year yet.

Completed in 2015, this community-run venue continues to grow its audience year on year and is becoming a firm favourite with performers and audiences alike. The combination of picnicking, plays and good company in the lovely setting of Dyke Road Park has proved such a hit that the venue has already had more than 50,000 attendees. “It has been a fantastic season with our highest audience numbers ever,” said BOAT Manager Anne-Marie Williams. “We have had huge support, in particular from local residents, who have given our actors and performers a proper Brighton and Hove welcome. Our volunteers have been brilliant, helping our new and returning audiences enjoy the many super shows.” Affectionately known by the acronym of BOAT, Brighton Open Air Theatre was constructed in 2015 in Dyke Road Park as a gift to residents as part of a bequest from Adrian Bunting. Completely not-for-profit, the theatre hosts visiting companies of actors and musicians performing everything from Shakespeare to raves and everything in between! Highlights this year have included A Punk’s Picnic; Houndini, a magic show for dogs; the popular family classic The Reluctant Dragon; The Midnight Gang; and a visit from the internationally renowned Shakespeare’s Globe on Tour, who offered audiences a choice of three plays each performance. And plans for next year? “We have some exciting shows already on the horizon,” says Anne-Marie. “It’s wonderful the way the people of Brighton and Hove have responded so warmly to Adrian Bunting’s bequest and really taken BOAT into their hearts.”

HOVE PARK An article by WH Johnson looking at the superstitions of Old Sussex...

SUSSEX SUPERSTITIONS... FISHERMEN Fishermen are still among the most superstitious of people, with certain rituals and beliefs to keep them safe at sea. Whilst some of these beliefs are now out of date, others are firmly held today. For instance you will only very rarely find a fisherman’s boat with the registered number 13. Some boat owners have even resisted a number where the digits add up to 13. woman. This particular anxiety was common in many parts of the country and some countered ill-effects of such meetings by spitting or crossing their fingers. Perhaps it is unnecessary to add that women, cross-eyed or not, were not allowed on board boats. WH Johnson is the author of The Superstitions and Curious Beliefs of Old Sussex, an e-book available from Amazon.

And note the quite odd language taboos, words which fishermen refrained from using at sea or while engaged on land in other important aspects of their trade. These taboo words varied from place to place. Where Yorkshire fishermen or those at Plymouth or Lowestoft will not utter the word “pig” lest it bring them bad luck, in Sussex the dread word is “rabbits”. Ted Watherington, a Brighton fisherman, was in no doubt about that. “You had to call them Bexhill Runners,” he explained. In other parts of the country the words “hare”, “church” or “egg”, if used by anyone aboard, could lead to the abandonment of a day at sea. At times, when there were difficulties on the boat, some might suggest that somehow a rabbit had been on board. This wariness of rabbits extended as far as seeing them on land. It was a very uncertain fisherman who went onto his boat having just seen one earlier. Oddly, meeting nuns on the way to the boat had the same effect. The story is told of the Brighton fisherman, Ted Gillam, taking a bus to Shoreham where his boat was docked. Part way through the journey two nuns boarded the bus. That made up his mind. Meeting nuns: it was a bad start, a warning no less. There’d be no fishing that day. He got off the bus and went home. This particular superstition extends to other fishing communities but how can it be explained? Eastbourne fishermen had the same reaction on seeing a vicar on a Friday and they thought that to meet a cross-eyed person was unlucky, especially if it was a

HOVE PARK This article is by Jason Palmer of the Sussex Heart Charity, who also co-owns a business on Woodland Parade…

HEART HEALTH... ANYONE CAN SAVE A LIFE The Sussex Heart Charity is your local heart charity and is one of the largest cardiac care charities in the county; ironically it’s also the smallest (it is the only charity dedicated to raising funds in Sussex for the people of Sussex). The first underlying principle of the SHC is to improve the quality of cardiac patients’ lives and that of their families too, whilst also promoting resuscitation within the community. The Sussex Heart Charity is tremendously grateful to all of you who give on a monthly or annual basis, or do something outstanding – raise money via Just Giving, organise events and fundraisers, and attend them too. People like you – thanks! The SHC community commitment is quite simple in so far as support is given to many groups, organisations, institutions and individuals who approach the charity for a grant towards the provision of a ‘community’ Automated External Defibrillator (AED). As part of this package the SHC provides Basic Life Support training courses, which are also scheduled as public courses throughout the year - anyone can save a life; you just need to know how. The SHC some years ago funded defibrillators at two local railway stations and SHC believe this was the first Public Access Defibrillation Programme anywhere in the world. The SHC provided the first AEDs to be installed at any European football ground (the Goldstone) and more recently provided the AMEX football stadium with eight defibrillators – making the Brighton ground the safest in Europe (in relation to surviving a cardiac arrest).

recently, supported the regulars of The Cleveland pub in Brighton who installed an AED on the wall outside. Jason Palmer Volunteer Director and Vice Chair Board of Trustees www.sussexheartcharity.org @Sussex_Heart
