WELCOME TO HOVE PARK LIVING!
Page 5 Hove Park Person...Jez Kearns
We hope you enjoy the articles we have for you this month.
Page 10 Old Photo
Our featured local person is Jez Kearns, an osteopath based in Orchard Avenue, and we hear from professional dancer Lee Smikle who has opened a new dance studio in Hove. Simon Baxendale tells us about the information boards at Three Cornered Copse and the effect of the recent wet weather, and there’s news of a project to gather memories of Brighton Dome. We also have a great archive photo from The Keep showing Air Raid Precaution volunteers at the Goldstone Ground during World War Two, watching out for enemy aircraft. Have a great February!

HOVE PARK Alison Thomson interviews a local osteopath...
HOVE PARK PERSON...JEZ KEARNS Jez Kearns runs Hove Park Osteopathy in Orchard Avenue. What got you into osteopathy in the first place? Fitness has always been a big part of my life. I’m pretty outdoorsy – kitesurfing is my passion, although since we got a dog I’ve also got into mountain biking so we can do trails together – but it was while I was living and working abroad that I realised I wanted to move into the healthcare profession. I used to take tourists up volcanoes in Guatemala – dormant ones, I should point out – and fitness was a crucial part of the enjoyment factor. I’d always been good at science, plus I earned the nickname MacGyver at university, because I’m always trying to fix things. It seemed a natural step to go from fixing mechanical things to fixing the human body. The musculoskeletal system is just a bunch of pulleys and levers, if you think about it. What’s the most common complaint you have to deal with? It’s mostly lower-back issues, but I also see a lot of

people with neck problems and headaches from too much time at a desk. It’s not just backs, though. I also treat knees, ankles, hips, you name it. Frozen shoulders are fairly common; to treat this I use the Niel-Asher Technique, which seems to produce good results as the feedback I get is pretty positive. What’s the most rewarding part of your job? It’s great to be able to improve people’s quality of life. I treated a woman in her late 60s who had been a lifelong swimmer but hadn’t swum for nearly a year and thought she wouldn’t swim again due to a shoulder problem. When she announced after five sessions she had done 10 laps at the pool, it was fantastic. How do you relax? Well, I used to surf but it’s not easy in Brighton as the waves aren’t great, so I took up kitesurfing, and I’m now completely hooked. Mountain biking has added a bit of spice to dog walking and we’re blessed with some great trails on the doorstep, from Devil’s Dyke and Stanmer Park to Friston Forest.

Any tips to readers? Keep active. Aches and pains are an everyday part of the ageing process, but you can help by keeping joints moving, whether walking, going to the gym, or I could recommend kitesurfing! 7 News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...
THE BOARD OF INFORMATION, AND MUD... After many months, even a year or two, of design and discussion, construction and installation, our project to install the two information boards at two of the entrances to Three Cornered Copse is completed. Last month, Neil, our Park Ranger, and his team installed the second notice board at the southern entrance to the lane leading up to the copse. We had to wait until the building works in that corner had finished, but having raised the money and engaged the designer and manufacturer, it now stands in place, hopefully for many years to come. Our thanks to the designer, local artist Jamie Eke, and to the James Gray Collection for the use of their photographs. However, what the information board does not tell visitors is that most of the copse is virtually impassable due to the wet weather that has turned the paths to mud. Only the sure footed and determined have been able to negotiate the copse in recent weeks, after one of the wettest seasons our members can remember. Perhaps the autumn of 2000 came close, where record rainfalls turned many of our parks to floods and streams. Since May 2019 rainfall in Sussex has been well above the mean value, peaking in December where it reached almost twice the average.
Despite the mud, shoots of cow parsley, snowdrops and the occasional daffodil are beginning to surface. It’s hard to believe that in a few weeks the ground will harden and the greenery will return. A recent inspection of the copse by the council’s contractors confirmed that some ash dieback has been found, which is unwelcome news. According to The Woodland Trust, the UK may lose up to 95% of its ash population, due to the fungus. The spores of the fungus may have come from ash saplings we imported as late as 2012 from infected areas in other parts of Europe. Unfortunately our native species have not evolved resistance to the infection. It may take as long as 50 years for the resistant ash strains to thrive once again, so the look of our countryside will be going through some changes in the next few years. All the more reason to take a stroll through the copse (after the mud season) and identify some of the huge ash trees in the wood before they succumb, and have a glance at the information board as you pass through. HOVE PARK Our regular healthy living article from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health...
EXPECTATIONS... WHAT THE ‘NATURALS’ WON’T TELL YOU For exercise-novices and returners alike, knowing what to expect is everything. There are millions of free exercise plans out there but few touch on how you will feel and how your body responds. When you embark on your new regime, you can bet that you will not instantly spring out of bed bursting with energy the very next day. You’ll feel tired, sore and most definitely unspringy-like. My friend reported how wiped out she was feeling, oh, and then, small detail: the vital explanation about how she’d started doing a bunch of new exercises in the preceding few days. She hadn’t made the connection and felt a failure. “You’re absolutely fine!”, I cried. She needed me to tell her that this was normal, that she was normal and deliver the revelation that every time I upped my usual exercise load, I, too, felt tired. Habitual exercisers know to expect fatigue or discomfort and pros positively seek it out to make gains. It’s in the recovery period that you get fitter. Next time you will bounce back much quicker. Goal-setting such as entering a race brings focus to your workouts but is not for everybody. Accountability and friendship brought through group exercise is a popular alternative. You get kudos
for simply turning up and trying. It’s consistency that creates habit; short-term fads and phases won’t cut it. Get a realistic 12-week fitness plan and diary to refer to on the days that you feel unmotivated, defeatist and impatient: celebrate every small step you take. After all, you can’t make giant leaps without taking those small steps. Mary Henderson

WEST BLATCHINGTON FARM Entrance to West Blatchington Farm c1912, taken from today’s Court Farm Road. St Peter’s Church on the right dates from Saxon/Norman times. It was rebuilt from a ruinous state in the late 19th century and added to in the 1960s. The cottage on the left was removed to build Holmes Avenue which passes both sides of West Blatchington Windmill. In the photo the sweeps of the windmill are being repaired.

HOVE PARK This article is by local resident Stephen Batey...
PHOTOGRAPHY...BACK TO THE FUTURE? Now that we’ve passed from the teens to the twenties I thought I’d look back over the last ten years at some of the changes that have taken place in the photographic world. On the one hand, digital cameras have progressed in a seemingly relentless march to higher and higher megapixel counts, and faster and faster autofocus. There’s increasing use of in-camera software to recognise and correct lens aberrations, with external software for additional assistance. The progress of computers in photography seems unstoppable. However, whilst it is now quick and easy to produce a “perfect” picture with either phone or digital camera, there seems to be something missing for an increasing number of people. Whether it’s because they feel a digital image is too clinical, prefer the more considered approach that fewer exposures encourages, or wish to use old craft skills, they are rediscovering film or old photographic processes. This seems part of the same trend which has led to a renaissance in paper books, vinyl records and handmade craft activities such as pottery. The steady decline in the different films available has changed with both Kodak and Fuji reintroducing discontinued films, and interest is increasing in processes that actually predate film. As far as I know only low end 35mm and roll film cameras are now produced, but there is a thriving second hand market for higher end cameras which sell for higher prices than a few years ago. For those wishing to try the older “alternative” processes, 35mm film and even the larger roll film sizes have the disadvantage of a small size negative which has to be enlarged to produce a reasonable sized print. Some alternative processes are not suitable for enlargement whilst others which use home made emulsions can’t be used with these cameras.
Stephen using his first large format camera
A number of people are therefore moving to large format cameras producing negatives 5”x4” and larger, together with others who use modern films and processes but prefer the large format way of working. The growth area in film camera manufacture is actually in large format sizes and today there are more companies making large format cameras than making DSLRs, although the number produced is far lower. The world’s biggest maker of large format cameras (Intrepid Cameras) is actually based in Brighton. There are at least two other companies in the UK making LF cameras, and many more world wide. HOVE PARK A programme of events to celebrate our natural environment...
ANNOUNCING NATURE2020 Throughout 2020, our local landscape will be coming alive with events celebrating the unique habitats and species of our natural environment as part of Nature2020.
Supported by Brighton & Hove City Council, a coalition of local environmental organisations has set up Nature2020 to celebrate the richness and significance of the local environment, and actively engage more people in the care and conservation of local nature. This year marks the end of the UN Decade on Biodiversity, and is an opportunity to reflect on the state of wildlife and conservation both globally and locally. The Nature2020 programme aims to raise awareness of, and connect people to, the environment we live and work in. Flagship events so far include: Brighton Festival Children’s Parade – ‘Nature’s Marvels’; Global City Nature Challenge; Youth Biodiversity Conference; children’s art exhibitions; The Living Coast Biosphere conference. The full calendar, which is being added to on a regular basis, can be found at: www.nature2020.org.uk/whatson. Any organisation or group interested in hosting their own event as part of Nature2020 is welcome
to submit their details via the portal on the website (conditions apply). What could you do to help biodiversity in your area in 20 seconds? 20 minutes? 20 hours? 20 days? Make a difference in 2020 and beyond! Share your ideas and achievements via Twitter - Nature2020 @2020nature, also on Facebook/Nature2020. “UNESCO World Biospheres are designated as global examples of sustainable development, with nature conservation, environmental engagement and education as part of their key purpose. Nature2020 is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to celebrate and learn about our world class environment of Downs, towns and coast, bringing people and nature together to inspire a positive future, today. Together we are The Living Coast.” – Sarah Dobson, The Living Coast Biosphere Programme Manager.

Lee Smikle tells us about his new dance space in Hove...
NEW DANCE STUDIO – SMIKLE SPACE What is your background? Originally from Yorkshire, I started dancing at the late age of 19. I didn’t even know that dance could be a potential career choice. A chance visit to my local theatre led me to get a part-time job there where I got to see live theatre, musicals and dance regularly. I saw acclaimed companies like Northern Ballet and Alvin Ailey. I signed up for ballet classes, and the rest is history. I trained at the Rambert School of Ballet & Contemporary Dance and have performed in operas (Glyndebourne), pop videos (Kylie Minogue) and movies (Billy Elliot). My main performance work, however, was with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, touring internationally in shows like Swan Lake, The Car Man and Nutcracker. I later became a resident artist and producer of the New Adventures Choreographer Award (NACA).
Professional dancer Lee Smikle has recently opened Smikle Space on Third Avenue, Hove – a new dance studio with classes for children, young people and adults.
Teaching soon became my main passion, and I retired from performing in 2007. I was the lead dance teacher at the Laban Centre For Advanced Training (CAT) 200714. In January 2010, I founded Shoreditch Youth Dance Company (SYD) and later Smikle Project (2011). Why did you decide to set up a dance studio? It’s been a long-time ambition of mine to have my own studio space. I love teaching, so creating a home for the work I do with young dancers was the dream. I moved to Brighton & Hove in 2017 and launched SYD:B Creative Dance Academy in September 2018. SYD:B has established itself as the go-to creative hub for many local young dancers, ready to take their dance training to the next level. With SYD celebrating their tenth anniversary this year, it seemed like the perfect time to open Smikle Space. Tell us about the studio and what sort of classes are available? There is a fully sprung dance floor with dance vinyl flooring, a kitchen, lounge area and a stunning photography infinity wall. We do classes and courses for children, young people and adults in: Creative Dance, Contemporary Dance, Ballet, Flow Fit, Boys Only, Intensives, workshops and private lessons. You can also hire out the space for rehearsals and events. Current offers: ‘First Class Free’ and ‘25% off all courses’. Smikle Space is at 5 King’s Mews, Third Avenue, Hove BN3 2PA. For more information, visit www.smiklespace.com or email info@smiklespace.com.

FROM THE KEEP… THE GOLDSTONE GROUND It’s not all about the glorious game here! The photographer has focused on what was a new aspect to football matches during the Second World War; the presence of Air Raid Precaution volunteers. Like football stewards today who must face the crowd, their job was keep their eyes up, studying the sky for signs of approaching German aircraft. This man, who is wearing his military issue steel helmet, would have used a wooden rattle (probably in his bag) to warn supporters to take cover – it made a loud clicking noise. We think this photograph was taken on 15 February 1941 at the Brighton and Hove Albion v Arsenal match, when a crowd of around 12,000 watched Third Division Albion lose 4-1. At this stage of the war Hove residents had had experience of bombing raids – there had been a serious attack on Kemp Town the previous September – but gas attacks were still considered the main danger. If you look closely at the crowd you’ll see that several individuals are carrying their own gas masks slung across them in a satchel-type bag. There are no team colours, but the supporters (and we can only see men in this picture) are smartly and warmly dressed in good quality overcoats and leather shoes and boots. Everyone is wearing some form of hat, either a cap, a trilby, or, in the case of the boys, a school cap. You can spot one or two military personnel in the crowd, a Royal Navy recruit on the left and a soldier on the right. This is an excellent picture of the Goldstone Ground. It shows how the pitch was oriented, with the famous North Stand, built in 1930, at the top of the photograph. The stand was positioned parallel to the Old Shoreham Road; behind it are the trees of Hove Park and to the left are the relatively-new houses of Park View Road, which runs along the west side of Hove Park.

According to the official Brighton and Hove Albion website, www.brightonandhovealbion.com, a total of three football games had to be abandoned due to air raid warnings during World War Two, and a bomb hit the North Stand in 1942, although no one was hurt. Organising a football game during a war was no easy task. The website states that, ‘under the wartime regulations, Charlie Webb, who was manager from 1919-1947, called upon players of other clubs serving with the Army in the area, and even had to draft soldiers from the crowd on occasion to complete an eleven.’ The last game at the Goldstone Ground was played in April 1997, and supporters left the ground carrying away handfuls of the much-loved turf. Its subsequent evolution from football pitch to retail park is still a bitter issue for many fans. This image (ARG/3/2490/2) is taken from the Argus collection (ARG/3) of glass plate negatives which is housed at The Keep. The images have been digitised and can be viewed in The Keep’s Reference Room. Search the website catalogue for a full list and details of opening times.

PUGS OF THE FROZEN NORTH
CARDIAC PATIENT INVOLVEMENT GROUP
Well-loved children’s book “Pugs of the Frozen North” by Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre has been adapted for the stage and will be performed at Exeter Street Hall (not far from Dyke Road Park) on 16th and 23rd February.
We are a group of patients who have had experience of the Cardiac Centre – either as an in-patient or an outpatient, either cardiology or cardiac surgery. New members will be very welcome. We meet every three months in a relaxed and informal environment (alternate Mondays and Wednesdays 5-6.30pm) to: Provide an opportunity for staff working in the Cardiac Centre to hear patients’ views, for example reviewing patient information and advice on feedback questionnaires and focus groups Provide an opportunity where patients can raise issues that are important to them, for example information to patients on waiting lists, privacy and dignity issues
The Race to the Top of the World! The prize? Your heart's desire. Shen and Sika can't resist the chance to win, but competition is fierce. The path to victory is littered with snow trolls, sea monsters and a gang of particularly hungry yetis. But Shen and Sika have something the other contestants don't have. Actually, they have 66 other things - pugs to be exact. That's a 264 paw-powered sled. With songs by Brian Mitchell, a cast including Amy Sutton and Joshua Crisp and a chance for younger audience members to play the yipping sleigh dogs, Pugs of The Frozen North promises fun and excitement for all the family.
What you have to say is important to us and as a result of our discussions we can make changes to benefit other patients. If you would like further information, please contact: Sarah Young Nurse Consultant Cardiology Tel: 01273 696955 ext 7850 Email: sarah.young@bsuh.nhs.uk

HOVE PARK Local news...
LATEST PLANS FOR SACKVILLE TRADING ESTATE The latest redevelopment plans for the Sackville Trading Estate and Hove Goods Yard are now available to view on Brighton & Hove City Council’s website. Moda Living’s previous plans were rejected by the council’s planning committee in July. Their revised proposals for the site, to the east of Sackville Road and to the north of the railway line, include 564 residential units, 260 care community units, retail floorspace, office accommodation and community/leisure floorspace. The buildings will range from 2 to 15 storeys – the same as in the previous application – although councillors on the planning committee had concerns over the height and density of the previous scheme. The developers say their revised scheme incorporates a number of significant changes which respond to the reasons given for refusal of the earlier application. The changes include a reduction in the number of residential apartments and an increased amount of office floorspace.

How the development will look from the junction of Old Shoreham Road and Goldstone Crescent
The number of “build to rent” homes has been reduced from 591 to 564. There is an amended housing mix with the number of studios reduced and an increased number of larger two- and three-bedroomed apartments. More of the build to rent homes will have private balconies and the extra care homes have been reconfigured to optimise daylighting levels. Many objections to the scheme have been registered on the council’s website, with concerns about the height and density of the scheme, overshadowing, traffic congestion and parking problems. One local resident commented: “The planned buildings are way too tall and will overshadow the whole area. The whole development has too high density. There is nowhere near enough parking provided on site. The single entrance will cause traffic chaos in an area already blighted by too much traffic. Sackville Road is one of the only exit roads from Hove due to a lack of bridges under the railway and is already incredibly busy at peak times. The effect of the extra traffic on air pollution in the area will be very significant.” Another said: “Everyone in the area wants a development to take place in the proposed location and everyone understands that new residential property is necessary countrywide. But the new proposals must be balanced against what currently exists in the vicinity and the community that lives within.” The deadline for determination of the application is 11 March 2020. To see the full plans or to comment, go to planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk/online-applications and search for planning application BH2019/03548.

Brighton Dome & Festival want your stories...
MEMORIES NEEDED FOR HERITAGE PROJECT Were you mesmerised by Pink Floyd’s first performance of Dark Side of the Moon? Did you sneak into David Bowie’s infamous 1973 Ziggy Stardust gig as a teenager? Have you got a special memory of taking part in Brighton Festival children’s parade? Or did you ever perform on the Brighton Dome stage? Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival are asking the public to record their memorable stories as part of a new heritage project, I Was There. The interviews and collection of memorabilia will be archived for future generations, and selected stories will be presented in an online exhibition and feature in a public programme of tours and talks at Brighton Dome. Nicola Benge, Project Manager at Strike a Light, added: “Capturing individual experiences provides a valuable insight into the social history of the arts in Brighton & Hove.
