HOVE PARK An annual event to usher in the coming year...

BURNING THE CLOCKS

Burning the Clocks is back on Saturday 21st December at 6.30pm.

Held on the shortest day of the year, Burning the Clocks sees around 2,000 local residents parading the paper and willow lanterns they’ve made through the city, before passing them into a huge bonfire on the beach. The lanterns are filled symbolically with their hopes and dreams. The coming year is then ushered in with a dazzling fire show. The parade begins at 6.30pm and the fire show begins on the beach by Madeira Drive at approximately 7.15pm.

Burning the Clocks was created by Same Sky in 1994 as a way for the whole community to enjoy the festive season, regardless of faith or creed. Burning the Clocks has a unique theme every year and this year it is a reflective one, in response to the current challenges of global warming, community cohesion and migration. The title is taken from Marcel Proust’s masterpiece “A la recherche du temps perdu”. The theme relates to shared memories, lost things, things we want to keep and treasure and moments that we hold dear and that have “made us”.

If you would like to take part in the parade, lantern making kits are on sale at the Royal Pavilion shop, HISBE in York Place, and the Book Nook in Hove.

MINDFULNESS FOR THE BODY There’s more to mindfulness than simply relaxation. It not only supports mental health but physical health, too. It’s a way to disentangle our thoughts and feelings whilst noticing the world around us, a struggle with the increasing amount of information that competes for our limited attention and time.

A growing body of research suggests that those who are better able to perceive and interpret internal signals, such as one’s heartbeat, are better able to respond to challenges to homeostasis, such as hunger, fatigue and even stress. Exposure and experience is how we update the brain’s model of our bodies and the outside world. Without this experience, we can’t make predictions about how to respond to changes in our bodies or our environment.

Can I detect my heartbeat and what does it tell me about the state of the body and/or mind? Such challenges within a reasonable range keep us in tune with our bodies enabling us to cope and develop resilience, both mentally and physically. If we never feel cold, hungry or tired, we don’t have an accurate reference point and our judgment is impaired. It’s more complicated than this but hopefully you get the gist.

What is very curious is that this has been suggested to affect totally unconscious behaviours from how our body controls our blood glucose to how we actually record and remember information. I always say keep a healthy scepticism; this ensures the robust scientific inquiry necessary to build a solid evidence base. Never disregard important health advice, but mindfulness could be a useful practice to complement other health behaviours in more ways than you may realise.

CUDDLE-BEDS BOOST FOR HOSPICE THANKS TO SKERRITTS Martlets, the local charity which provides life-changing hospice care, celebrated the delivery of two large ‘cuddle-beds’ courtesy of Hove businessman Richard Skerritt and his company Skerritts Financial Planners.

The cuddle-beds will help patients who are being looked after at the hospice in Hove to be as close to loved ones as they would be at home, something standard clinical beds make difficult. HOVE PARK News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

IT’S ALL ABOUT TREES Any gardener will tell you that the autumn days are for maintenance and care for trees and plants, and it’s just the same for the 11-acre park called Three Cornered Copse.

Another month, another work day, in mid-November saw our volunteer team assemble at the top of the copse.

The weather was cool, but dry (for a change), and we set about inspecting and clearing around the hedge whips we had planted many months ago. There were some encouraging results. At least half of the planted trees had taken, and had not been too damaged by rabbits, or passing humans. We are delighted to have helped the biodiversity, as has been recorded by the iNaturalist organisation (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/threecorner-forager), where the Brown Hairstreak butterfly has been spotted on our new saplings.

As the hedge matures, it will attract more species and help to muffle the noise from the passing traffic on the busy Dyke Road Avenue. We cleared around the surviving saplings and left the plastic collars around the ones still striving to establish in the long grass verge.

There were other jobs to do as well. The heavy rain of this autumn has softened the soil on the forest floor,

and when the October gales blew through our area, several large trees had fallen, blocking paths and the bridleway. Luckily we had enough muscle in the team to saw through the fallen trunks and clear the vegetation.

The winds had broken several large branches too, left hanging precariously from the lower branches over the worn paths.

In recent weeks, the Woodland Trust has launched a campaign to plant trees, “The Big Climate Fightback”, using the planting of trees to reduce the CO2 in our air.

They say that each tree absorbs 1 tonne of CO2 in 100 years, which partially offsets the 9 tonnes produced by each person in one year. The arithmetic suggests we each need to plant a considerable number of trees in our lifetime to help reduce the CO2 effect, a feat which should easily be achieved by our team of volunteers! Let’s hope that next year the council don’t decide to remove these carbon dioxide eaters by widening the path for the proposed development of Toads Hole Valley.

We have one more work day left in 2019, on Saturday December 7, when mince pies may well be served, all welcome as usual. If we don’t see you then, have a very peaceful Christmas, from The Friends of Three Cornered Copse.

BOOTH MUSEUM HARE IN “HIS DARK MATERIALS” A Booth Museum exhibit has landed a starring role in the BBC1 drama “His Dark Materials”.

The Booth Museum, the natural history museum in Brighton, loaned a stuffed hare to the production company – who used the animal as a starting point for a CGI character.

“His Dark Materials” by Philip Pullman is set in an alternative world where people have animals as ‘daemons’ or physical representatives of their soul. In this instance, the hare was transformed digitally into Hester, an arctic hare. She is the daemon of aeronaut and adventurer Lee Scoresby who travels to the North Pole.

Scoresby teams up with the main character Lyra, played

by Dafne Keen, on a perilous journey to the North.

The hare will be on display in the museum for newfound fans of His Dark Materials. This is not the first animal from the Booth to feature as a CGI character. A badger has previously been digitised for the basis of the CGI badger in the Prince Caspian movie in 2008.

The hare was not the only item borrowed from the Booth.

NEW BINS TO HELP SEAFRONT RECYCLING...

More than 100 new bins have been installed along the busy seafront in the hope more people will recycle plastic bottles, cans and glass.

The waste containers are part of 300 special ‘Heritage’ bins that are being put in place along the 13 kilometres (8 mile) stretch from Saltdean to Hove Lagoon.

The bins have three separate sections in different colours to help people recycle more easily, with two that reflect the city’s seafront heritage - Brighton Borough blue for plastic bottles and cans and Hove Borough maroon for glass. The third section will be black for ordinary rubbish.

“We’ve listened to people and installed these bins” Cllr Anne Pissaridou, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee, said: “These bins serve three very important purposes.

They will help people recycle more, are bright and colourful so can be seen easily and they fit in with the city’s seafront heritage. The council quite rightly received complaints about there being no recycling bins along the promenade, so we’ve listened to people and installed these bins to address that situation.”

No reason not to use a bin Cllr Pissaridou added: “There is now no reason for anyone to leave their plastic bottles, empty cans, glass or rubbish on the beach or next to a bin that may be full. If people find a bin that is full, there will be another very close by they will be able to use.”

The existing large communal bins will be left for a while to ensure there is proper capacity. Once removed, the old bins will be reused elsewhere and will only be thrown away if broken and no longer useable.

The bins shouldn’t be used for barbecue waste Although the new bins can take plastic bottles, empty cans, glass or rubbish, they should not be used for barbecue materials as these can create a fire hazard.

There are though special barbecue bins along the seafront near the sections of the beach where barbecuing is allowed.

Cllr Pissaridou said: “The different sections of the bin will not have plastic bin liners inside which will reduce the council’s plastics use and costs, and will be emptied straight into the small dust cart.”

This type of bin is also used in Worthing and has proved to be weather-proof and has lasted 20 years.

AUTUMN ACTIVITY Quite an autumn - torrential rain, howling gales and some rare sunny periods! Hove Park seems to have survived unscathed but Hove Recreation Ground next door lost one of its large trees.

Fortunately it was dry and sunny for our litter pick and Purple4Polio crocus planting. 4000 more corms have now been planted near the others by the miniature railway loop at the bottom of the Droveway. The corms were again donated by the Brighton and Hove Soiree Rotary Club and aim to raise awareness of efforts to finally end polio.

In many countries when a child receives polio drops their little finger is painted with purple dye to show they have received the life saving vaccine. Although there are now only a handful of new cases annually and only two remaining polio endemic countries (Pakistan and Afghanistan), there is still a serious risk of the disease returning so continued campaigning, health worker training and immunisation programmes are vitally important. Eradicating this highly infectious, crippling and potentially fatal disease would be a historic public health achievement with polio following smallpox to become only the second human disease eliminated worldwide.

NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING POINTS More than 200 new electric vehicle charging points are set to be installed across the city over the next few months.

Following a tender process, the council has appointed Electric Blue to install and maintain the electric vehicle charge points. The project is being funded with £300,000 from the Office of Low Emissions, and £100,000 from Electric Blue.

FROM THE KEEP ARCHIVE… This glorious celebration of civic pride looks a little bit like an Advent calendar with all the windows opened! It even follows a similar design, with the most important person at the centre surrounded by his associates of higher, and, as you spread outward, lesser ranks.

Irreverence aside, there is something quite moving in Hove Council’s response to the great event of 1953, the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II. One can imagine how each of the 41 individuals prepared for their photograph. They would have made sure that their fur-trimmed gowns, hats and gloves were spotless. They would have been at great pains to stand in a position which showed their figures to the best advantage,

holding or wearing their accessories just as protocol dictated. In the centre is His Worship the Mayor of Hove, Councillor AE Brocke; below him is Mr Stevens the Town Clerk. Around them are ranged the Aldermen, while the Councillors fill up the edges.

The five ladies are wearing gloves and hats, while the gentlemen hold their gloves, tucking their hats under one arm.

Brighton and Hove Archivist at The Keep Andrew Bennett says: ‘This huge image probably had pride of place in Hove’s old Town Hall, and luckily for us it somehow escaped the fire which destroyed the building in 1966.’ www.thekeep.info Lindsey Tydeman
