Russell House in 1786

CUMBERLAND AND THE “VICTORIOUS AMAZONS” OF BRIGHTHELMSTONE Henry, Duke of Cumberland and brother of George III, was among the first members of the royal family to visit and adopt Brighton as one of his favourite places. After a successful visit in 1771 he returned many times for the fashionable summer season.

The Duke often rented Russell House, the magnificent former home of the famous Dr Russell, in its prime position at the south end of the Steine. In 1782 he invited his nephew, the Prince of Wales, for his first visit to the town.

The future George IV was hooked, and over the next few years started building his wonderful marine palace.

Trying his luck with a release further inland at Withdean, the Duke had another failure when the stag headed off to Lewes and lost the chasing pack by zigzagging through drains and the river. This hunt too was aborted and, sadly, though it was later found and placed in a barn to recover, the stag died the next day.

Cumberland was popular with the fashionable visitors to the town and the townsfolk. His visits were always eagerly anticipated and when he arrived in 1779 he was greeted by ringing church bells and a royal salute of 21 cannon from the fort. Two hours later the Duchess arrived, her coach preceded by six footmen who had run from the town to greet and escort her “home”.

Celebrations continued with the Castle Tavern and the Steine brilliantly lit as darkness fell.

At the time of these royal visits to Brighton the government used press-gangs to recruit mariners for the King’s navy and two young Brighton men having been so “pressed” the fishing community began a protest which threatened to become violent. Cumberland earned the gratitude of the whole community when he promised to intercede on their behalf. He successfully negotiated a compromise and the following evening the whole fishing fleet set sail with a full complement of men, including those who had hidden away for weeks for fear of being recruited. A few years later the press-gang returned, but this time, emboldened by the Duke’s support, the wives, daughters and sweethearts of the fishermen, wielding mops, brooms and firepans, confronted the recruiting captain and chased him through the town in fear for his life until he made his escape from the fury of these “Victorious Amazons” to try his luck elsewhere.

It was during this 1779 visit that the Duke learned of the unsuccessful stag-hunt earlier in the year which ended in disappointment for the huntsmen when the stag leapt into the sea at Newhaven and swam out into the channel. After the hunt had dispersed it was picked up about a mile off shore and returned exhausted but unharmed to dry land. The Duke decided to try his luck at stag-hunting the following year but the first stag he released leapt to its death over the cliff at Rottingdean after a short chase. The carcass was distributed to the

HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

LOVE YOUR PARKS Last month in July (14-23) the week was denoted as Love Parks week (#LoveParks) by Keep Britain Tidy, who have adopted the campaign since the demise of the charity GreenSpace.

Its objective is to highlight the precious resource which we all use and, to some extent, take for granted. But of course, with funding cuts on the council, this is no longer an option. Love Parks 2017 seeks to encourage ownership of the care and maintenance of our green spaces by the local residents who use it. (Who hasn’t seen a pile of litter in our local park and muttered, “Why don’t the council clear this up?”) The truth is that with enforced budget cuts our green spaces have never been as poorly funded, and yet more popular, whilst looking shabbier and more unmanaged. Hove Park’s once carefully manicured flower beds now grow wild with weeds, Three Cornered Copse is mowed less, and litter bins aren’t frequently emptied or mended. The City Park Rangers’ responsibility expands wider and spreads thin across our city’s green spaces.

Hence “Love Parks” as councils seek to delegate responsibility to volunteer groups around the country. But the

Friends groups have not got the skills in arboriculture, ecology or landscaping needed to maintain our parks to the standard that our predecessors did. In Friends of Three Cornered Copse we rely heavily on our Park Ranger to guide and advise, while we provide the hands required to clear and carry.

It’s a false economy, of course. City of Edinburgh research has found that for every £1 spent on parks there is a return of £12 in social, environment and health benefits. Not to mention the garden effect of parks on our city, increasing the biodiversity, reducing pollution and cooling the town in summer.

If you really do love your park, Hove Park, Three Cornered Copse, or Green Ridge, please join the Love Parks campaigns and consider contacting your local Friends group and get involved. But also, don’t hesitate to contact your councillor to stress the importance of these precious spaces. A recent estimate is that we spend no more than £1.5bn on our public spaces or 0.15% of our public spending budget in England, Wales and Scotland, truly great value, and surely one of the last budgets which should be reduced, or even eliminated, as was recently announced by Bristol City Council.

HEALTHY LIVING... MEDIA MISCHIEF At the Food Matters conference in November, the head of the British Dietetic Association felt that the extent of the media’s misreporting of scientific studies was so reckless that some regulation was required to mitigate its negative impact on public health goals.

The media’s take on nutrition and health either muddies the already complex waters of nutrition or causes people to switch off altogether to the health messages that they really ought to heed.

This doesn’t just apply to science but across the board.

We could all do better when it comes to questioning the news we hear. How many times do I say, “I’ll have to look that up later…”, and if I actually bother to, cannot make head nor tail of the raw facts and need some expert guidance. Where do you turn to when you’re hit by the next shock headline claiming ‘Fruit makes you fat!’

Knew it! Of course not! Though it’s true if you eat too much of anything, it can make you fat.

Nutrition is one subject that I know where to find trustworthy sources of information. On the NHS health news section, it covers topics that cause a stir such as “There’s no difference between White and Brown bread”. The British Nutrition Foundation does a great “Facts behind the headlines” series, too.

For journalists and press officers out there, there’s the Science Media Centre. And, of course, you can ask a registered nutritionist or dietitian whose expertise is evidencebased and underpinned by rigorous scientific training.

PHOTOGRAPHY: A NEW LOOK AT THE STREETS Going around even familiar places can be eye opening if we really look rather than expecting that there is nothing new to see. And even if not new to us, something could be worth photographing as in years to come it will be a piece of history, showing what Brighton and Hove were like.

There’s a lot of interest in old photographs of places we know; the Argus regularly publishes ones showing fascinating old shop frontages and long vanished buildings. But these were once new photographs and the supply of the next generation’s “old photographs” partly depends on us.

In the course of an afternoon’s stroll around the centre of Brighton I came across several interesting things that may well be passed by unnoticed. Sometimes simply because people tend to look no higher than the shop fronts. Architectural details are often interesting. Can you recognise where this is, stripped of its surroundings?

Shop windows offer creative possibilities, both from the outside and the inside. From the outside, there can be a double interest - the shop interior and the reflection of the buildings outside.

HOVE PARK Some more great shows this month at the BOAT in Dyke Road Park...

AUGUST AT THE BRIGHTON OPEN AIR THEATRE There’s a good offering of Shakespeare at the BOAT this month, kicked off by an eccentric production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream from the Brighton Shakespeare Company (2nd to 6th August).

Other Shakespeare plays this month are Richard III (13th August) and Twelfth Night (19th August).

The Oddsocks Theatre Company are performing two Shakespeare adaptations: Romeo and Juliet with a musical Mods and Rockers twist (23rd August), and a hilarious musical version of Macbeth, set in a steampunk world (24th August).

There are also several shows for families. A new adaptation of Peter Pan by Laura Turner has beautifully designed costumes, music and songs (8th August). A favourite Pride and Prejudice children’s book, The Smartest Giant in Town by Julia Donaldson, is given a musical adaptation by Folksy Theatre, with puppetry, colourful characters and songs (20th August).

ful mix-up in the royal nursery. Priscilla the princess has switched places with Pigmella, the farmer’s new piglet, and the ill-tempered King and Queen squarely blame a bad witch! (25th August) For older children, Illyria perform The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Four intrepid explorers travel to an uncharted plateau in South America and encounter terrifying dinosaurs previously believed to be extinct.

But what evidence can they produce to prove that these creatures actually exist? Unless, of course, they bring live specimens back to London. What could possibly go wrong? (10th to 12th August) For music lovers, Illyria are staging The Mikado by Gilbert & Sullivan (9th August), and Heritage Opera return with a performance in English of Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte (27th August). All-female trio Going South bring musical frivolity, with a zany mix of topical comedy and stunning harmonies - opera meets West End (18th August). Pianist and singer Andrew D Brewis performs a tribute to Cole Porter in You’re The Top (26th August).

Other plays this month include an adaptation of Jerome K Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat (16th August), Earthquakes in London by Mike Bartlett (30th August to 2nd September) and Pride and Prejudice performed by Chapterhouse (17th August). This brand-new adaptation by Laura Turner celebrates the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, and promises to be one of the most splendid evenings of the summer.

WALKING TOUR OF HOVE OLD CEMETERY FOR HERITAGE OPEN DAYS WEEKEND Every September some 40,000 volunteers across England organise 5,000 events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore.

The Heritage Open Days weekend is between 7-10 September and one event nearby is a guided walking tour of Hove Old Cemetery, ‘Mobster, Mutiny and Military Mettle’, by local Blue Badge Guide Tania Noddings of Sussex Tours.

The cemetery is an absorbing and fascinating place to visit; it reflects the Victorian death culture and the social importance of significant family memorials and is the last resting place of some prominent Hove residents.

The walk explores both the Indian Mutiny and the Crimean War and you’ll hear about a local man’s involvement in the Charge of the Light Brigade! Trumpeter Martin Leonard Lanfried, one of the famous ‘Six Hundred’, later came to live on the Portland Road.

Lt Victor Richardson MC was born in Hove and is also remembered during the tour. Victor is memorialised in St Barnabas Church of Poets Corner, where he was a member of the congregation. If you are familiar with

August is Pride month in Brighton, so of course Latest TV has some great shows looking at different perspectives on LGBT experiences.

QTube: Costa Del Pride is a new documentary film capturing exclusive behind-the-scenes footage at Gay Pride Torremolinos. With it only a few hours’ flight away, Spain’s celebrations are an exciting short hop away for those in the mood to broaden their own Pride histories.

SUSSEX SUPERSTITIONS BEWITCHED In 1842 a labourer’s wife had been ill for a considerable time and could not understand why her illness was so protracted.

She had talked matters over with her neighbours and they concluded that she was bewitched. They suspected that the witch was another local woman, described as ‘a very decent, inoffensive creature’, but, of course, appearances can deceive. The sick woman along with her neighbours tried a number of stratagems to destroy the so-called witch’s power but all of these failed. Finally they somehow hit upon a scheme which they hoped might work.

The Sussex Agricultural Express reports: “They procured pigeons and tied them in pairs back to back by their wings and lighted a large fire, and stopped up [sealed] the room as close as possible; some of the poor pigeons they opened at the breast in order that the fire might burn their hearts while alive. How many were burned, the writer cannot say, but he heard a neighbour state

that he himself had burned four, and he thought they should have destroyed the witch if the house had been closer [more tightly sealed]. It is supposed by the neighbours that a dozen to sixteen pigeons were destroyed in this cruel manner.” As tradition demanded when counter-spells were used, during the whole hideous operation not a word was spoken. Sadly, the report contains no mention of the outcome so we do not know if the woman was effectively treated or if the police were called to deal with the matter of the pigeons.

During autumn 2016, an extraordinary nine-week sculpture hit the streets of Brighton & Hove, with visitors to the trail c Visitor numbers were in excess of 350,000 with more than 14.6 million social media impressions for the hashtag #brightonsnowdogs. However, most importantly of all, Snowdogs by the Sea raised £310,000 for Martlets Hospice and achieved an unprecedented level of awareness for this local charity which provides a vital community service.

A survey to evaluate the impact of the trail shows that the people of Brighton & Hove took the Snowdogs to their hearts. At the end of the trail, over 10,000 people watched the auction live on the Snowdogs by the Sea Facebook page and 6,000 flocked to the farewell event to say goodbye. 100% of the city’s residents said they were proud to have the trail in their area.

However, the trail also attracted visitors from outside of the city. Having a Snowdog at Victoria Station during the first seven weeks of the trail may also have helped promote visits from London and the South East. Interestingly, the trail also encouraged locals to explore their own city, as 42% of visitors from Brighton & Hove said that they had visited a new attraction or place as a result of visiting the trail.

One of the more surprising impacts of the Snowdogs by the Sea trail was its effect on health and wellbeing in the city. One in three people questioned had visited the entire trail, with the majority doing so on foot. In fact, the total distance walked around the Snowdog Trail was approximately 2.6 million miles or the equivalent of walking around the earth 105 times! 85% of respondents agreed that the Snowdogs trail had encouraged them to get outdoors more, with 81% saying it encouraged them to walk further than usual. PROPOSALS FOR THE DYKE TAVERN A planning application was submitted in June for the former pub, The Dyke Tavern, at 218 Dyke Road.

The proposal by owner Martin Webb is to revert just over half of the ground floor of the building, which had been converted to an antiques shop, back to a pub, with a pizza area. There will also be alterations to the accommodation above, with two first floor flats and two flats in the roof. The planning statement says: “The resultant sized pub will be more appropriately scaled for its catchment area, and commensurate in size with many other neighbourhood pubs.” The other half of the building is to remain as a shop.

Under the latest proposed layout, the shop will be located at the north-west end of the building (with frontages onto Dyke Road and Highcroft Villas) and the pub will be located at the south-east end (fronting Dyke Road only).

The garden will be used for the sale of garden furniture.

The planning statement says: “The ‘original’ pub closed because the owners could not make it work profitably. In essence, the pub was too large for its catchment base.”

The owner believes that a reduction in size of the pub will make its long-term success more likely.

Since the pub was converted into a shop last September (Emporium Treasure and Trash), the site has been added to the council’s list of assets of community value (ACV), following a campaign by local residents. The Save The Dyke Pub group held a community meeting at the Church of the Good Shepherd Hall on 20th June to discuss the new plans. The group believes that a small pub would not work and hopes that the owner will sell the building to someone who wants to run it as a full-sized pub and garden. Other pub owners have expressed an interest and The Dyke Pub Preservation Society has also offered to buy it for the local community.

Objectors say that the new pub will be too small and dark. They are concerned by the loss of the garden, with no outside space proposed for the pub, and the loss of community meeting space. There are also concerns that the garden will eventually be used for housing, and that, if these proposals go ahead, it will be only a matter of time before the rest of the building is lost to development.

Supporters of the proposals say that the Dyke Tavern is greatly missed and should be reinstated as soon as possible. They believe that a smaller venue would be a good compromise.

BOOTH MUSEUM TO GET AN INTERACTIVE SCIENCE CENTRE Brighton & Hove’s Royal Pavilion & Museums (RPM) has successfully bid for nearly £2.8 million over four years (£689,507 a year) from Arts Council England’s National Portfolio.

The conditional offer means that RPM will be able to extend its work to bring collections from across the city closer to communities, through digital and school activities to exhibitions, events and outreach.

Funding will be used to spotlight the lesser known museums, with a new ‘evolution gallery’ at the Booth Museum planned to feature a specially commissioned replica of an ‘Iguanodon Mantellisaurus’ (a type of dinosaur) and the story of its local discoverer Gideon Mantell. BRIGHTON’S BIG SCREEN Brighton’s Big Screen has become an annual event on the seafront; the beachfront cinema is back for its sixth year and runs throughout August. There will be over 100 screenings of blockbuster movies, classic films and sporting events.

Films to be shown this year include La La Land, Sister Act, Back to the Future, Hairspray, Trainspotting 2, Titanic, BFG, Jaws, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast and many many more.

A highlight of the month will be The Quadrophenia Experience on Saturday 26th August.

On Friday 11th August (11am) there will be a free showing of Charlie’s Letters, the first feature film made by 16-year-old Elliott Hasler from Hove. It tells the true story of his great-grandfather Charlie Standing in World War Two: an escaped POW’s battle for survival whilst on the run in war-torn Italy, whilst his wife and young child eagerly await news back in Brighton. The film sold out at the Brighton Fringe and is soon to be screened at the Edinburgh Fringe.

On Saturday 12th August there is a fun-filled day of musicals, with a Grease Sing-Along at 2pm, followed by Mamma Mia at 5pm and Dirty Dancing at 8pm.

Brighton’s Big Screen is located just to the east of the Brighton Palace Pier, and is open from 12 noon to 11pm, with pop-up restaurants and a licensed beach bar. There will be a 20-minute interval during the films.

The Big Screen will still run in bad weather (unless the safety of cinema goers is at risk); it’s advisable to bring an extra layer of clothing for late nights and check the website for updates.
