An extract from the reminiscences of Derek Earl...

Reminiscences of Hassocks Derek Earl has lived in Keymer for over 80 years. This extract from his reminiscences of life in the 1930s looks at Keymer Road. Layer the boot and shoe repairer; and past the Greyhound pub was Mr and Mrs Grinstead’s general store providing food and household goods.

Further east, beyond the cinema (in Keymer Road), stood a line of Victorian mansions extending to Lodge Lane. I remember ‘Woodlands’ house was commandeered as a command centre for the Canadian troops during the war. We youngsters came to know the soldiers very well. They kept us furnished with geographical magazines and empty “Sweet Caporal” cigarette packets that were much sought after, as they contained aircraft recognition cards. Nearer to Lodge Lane was the rambling building of the Downs Hotel which had a colourful history, used in its time to house unfortunate people from the Brighton Workhouse and, during the First World War, convalescing Indian soldiers. From the cinema to Lodge Lane, farmland lay to the south of these properties. There were three shops in Keymer - east of Lodge Lane,

The third shop, on the north side of the road going west, was Mr Merrith’s bakery. Next door was Keymer Garage, run by Mr King. Continuing west on the north side of Keymer Road, there was open ground in front of Keymer church hall, being used as an allotment. Crossing Ockley Lane, one saw the large Victorian mansion of Stafford House, standing in its own grounds. There were no houses down the right hand side of Ockley Lane, looking north to Oldland Lane - just open farmland, both arable and pasture. West, beyond Stafford House, stood three large Victorian residences, then came Kymer House, Clerks Acre and the Salvation Army care home, Villa Adastra, with grounds extending north towards Adastra Avenue. The adjoining Adastra Park was given to the village by Mr and Mrs Stafford in memory of their son, sadly killed in the First World War. It had a beautiful remembrance garden, carefully landscaped, at the lych gate entrance. There was a large circular pond where the young folk of the village could sail their homemade model boats. Moving on westward was Orchard Lane where one could buy fresh fruit and vegetables from the popular nursery owners, Mr and Mrs Rush. The local vet, Mr Robins, also lived in the lane and would often tend to the odd injured bird or animal that we children would bring him. Wilmington House with its extensive grounds was owned by Mr and Mrs Meredith, going west for a good 150 yards to the premises of Mr and Mrs Baker, the hairdressers. Then came Inksters the chemist and, finally, the Midland Bank, managed by Mr Biggs, on the corner of Grand Avenue. Derek Earl

An update on a great new scheme...

Cycling Without Age Hurst & Hassocks In April we wrote about Cycling Without Age, a concept introduced to integrate the community through a trishaw bike! It is now up and running with locals volunteering to be the pilots, the ones who control the trishaw bike and do the cycling. They are still looking for volunteers so that they will be able to offer more rides to elderly residents in Hassocks and Hurstpierpoint. The Cycling Without Age team took part in the St Lawrence Fair procession at the beginning of the summer, where they were greatly welcomed and supported. By attending events such as village fairs, they are advertising the service as well as showing locals how fun and inclusive it is. Looking into the future, they hope to take the trishaw to local afternoon tea parties, such as the 1918 Lloyd George Garden Party. They have also been running weekly evening sessions throughout the summer! The team hope to expand in the future by having another trishaw. They purchased the first electric-assist trishaw through fundraising and hope that this is something they will be able to achieve looking forward. However, in the meantime they will hold fundraisers to cover ongoing costs. If you are interested in getting involved, either as a pilot or for a ride, they run regular Tuesday evening rides from 5.30pm-7.30pm, from Proper Cycling & Coffee. If you are unable to get to Proper, they also offer a ‘collect from home’ service. Rides can also be arranged from other locations such as Hurstpierpoint and Sayers Common.

An annual event coming up...

Hurst Festival – 15th to 30th September This year’s Hurst Festival will offer a wide variety of cultural events, showcasing the talents of musicians, singers, writers, actors, artists, brewers and much more. 16th September will be Super Sunday, when the festival takes over the high street from 12 noon, including the Treasured Transport parade of vintage vehicles, led by the Burgess Hill Marching Band, Morris dancing, the South Downs Folk Singers and street entertainers. The varied music programme includes Heber Opera, concert guitarist and composer Richard Durrant, a recital by baritone Matthew Sprange with pianist Elizabeth Rossiter, local a cappella singing group No Strings Attached, Mark Chadwick of The Levellers and many more. There’s also “Return of the Dance Floor” on 29th September with DJ Emz, the London Disco Society and Miss Devine. Some events are themed around “Peace” to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice, the terms of which were drawn up at Danny House. A sculpture of Lloyd George dancing the hornpipe will be unveiled at the Lloyd George Garden Party at Danny House on 2nd September (2pm-6pm; £5). At The Players Theatre (147 High

Street, Hurstpierpoint) is a new play by Kevin Carey, “Winning the Peace”, based on events at Danny House in 1918 (24th, 26th, 28th and 30th September). You can find the festival programme at www.hurstfestival.org.

The Clayton Tunnel; photo by Robert Nemeth

This year there’s a chance to find out what lies behind the commanding battlements of the Clayton Tunnel North Portal. Every day hundreds of trains hurtle under this Gothic folly, whose imposing castellated towers protect the old tunnel keeper's cottage. But for most people this secluded building remains a mystery. Visitors will be shown around the grounds and have the chance to go into the cottage, view some memorabilia and experience the trains. Open 8 and 9 September; limited spaces; pre-booking required by 3 September at www.eventbrite.co.uk. Minimum age: 18 years. What is Canine Osteopathy? Canine osteopathy works with the same principles as human osteopathy, and is a system of medicine that uses physical techniques to treat the dog as a whole, rather than focusing on a single area. This is to promote healthy functioning, by correcting mechanical imbalances within and between the structures (muscles, bones, ligaments organs and fascia) of the body. It can help animals of any age from puppy to elderly, cope with many problems and conditions affecting the musculo-skeletal system; such as muscle stiffness, spasm, tendonitis or ligament sprains; including minor orthopaedic problems. If you are unsure as to the suitability of Osteopathy for your dog, please feel free to ask any questions via email or phone. Nicky works in the vicinity of Hurstpierpoint, Partridge Green or Henfield, but can travel further if needed. Consultations are done on a home visit basis. Osteopaths always work in conjunction with the dog’s veterinary surgeon, and must by law, obtain consent from the Vet for treatment of your dog.

An update on the recent Adastra Park Consultation...

Adastra Park Masterplan Hassocks Parish Council say that they would like to thank everyone who completed the survey on the Adastra Park Masterplan. Much interest was shown by those who visited the Parish Council stand at the May Day event where the Masterplan was on display. Many questions were asked about the proposals and the event provided a really valuable opportunity for councillors to engage with the community. In excess of 380 survey responses were submitted including 160 from the pupils of The Windmills Junior School. The overwhelming response supported the vision for the park and many ideas were forthcoming from those who completed the survey. Pleasingly, a number of people have also volunteered to assist with improving the Garden of Remembrance. Successful Funding Bid Some great news is that, since the consultation, the parish council has received confirmation that it has been successful in a bid to secure external funding from developer contributions (s106). A total of £75,000 has been awarded from Mid Sussex District Council towards the skate/wheel park which will now enable the progression of this part of the project.

The council is in the process of prioritising other areas of the plan, drawing on the suggestions and outcomes of the consultation. The next stage is to explore the feasibility of various options with suppliers.

This article by WH Johnson looks at some of the superstitions of Old Sussex...

Sussex Superstitions...Shape-Shifting Until 100 or so years ago some people, especially those living in rural areas, believed that a human with special powers could change into an animal. There are references to this as far back as the 12th century and it was mentioned frequently by witnesses in the 18th century. The hare was a great favourite of the witches. It was thought that, in the form of hares, they sucked cows’ udders in the night, leaving them dry for the morning’s milking. Sometimes they were held responsible for damage to crops. One old lady – so it was said - could change into a hare and often roamed attended by her own dogs – her ‘familiars’ perhaps. On one occasion, just by her cottage, a farmer’s dogs managed to bite

the hare’s behind but then the fleeing animal slipped away down a cottage drain. When the farmer burst into the cottage, there was the old lady, in human form. There was no sign of any hare, though the farmer noticed that she was rubbing her behind. Another time – and this is a creepy kind of tale – a man related how a cat was constantly coming into his garden and causing havoc. He seemed to think that this invasion always occurred when his wife went a-shopping or a-visiting. One day, tired of the nuisance, the man took out his rifle and shot the cat in the leg. Shortly after this his wife came home from market and she was limping. She explained it away by telling him that she had fallen down. Poor chap, was this another example of a shape-changing witch being injured in her guise of an animal? Such stories have the feel of rural myth about them and accounts of animals and injured witches are common throughout the British Isles and beyond into Europe and they were believed not only by the uneducated. A vicar’s wife wrote in her diary in the 1870s: ‘I have met with even educated persons who, if a hare were the first animal that crossed their path upon their leaving home, would turn back, regarding it as a warning.’ WH Johnson is the author of The Superstitions and Curious Beliefs of Old Sussex, an e-book available from Amazon.

Advice from local fitness expert Jane Roweth...

Healthy Living Hassocks...Don’t Just Sit There! It’s been widely publicised in the press that sitting is bad for us, that those in sedentary jobs sat at desks have far higher risk of all sorts of ailments and that humans weren’t really designed for sitting; in the car, at desks or on sofas. Many of us feel like we’ve hardly hard a moment to sit down but in reality know we spend far too long hunched over our computers locked into a very unnatural position. Then when we do get up we are dashing from car, to house, to meeting, to kids to find that in the evening we are too tired to contemplate movement or activity and all we really want to do is finally sit down again! Sitting is bad for you because it enforces unnatural postures held for long periods of time which cause your muscles to tighten, creating stiffness and imbalances that can be painful and in turn make you feel less like moving. A study of nearly 8,000 adults showed a direct relationship between time spent sitting and risk of early mortality of any cause. As your total sitting time increases, so does your risk of an early death. The positive news: people who sat for less than 30 minutes at a time had the lowest risk of early death. So getting up from your desk or off the sofa is good for you.

Can you make September the month you sit less and move more frequently? Yours in health Jane For more information check out www.aspirefitnesssolutions.co.uk
