This month we meet another recently elected councillor...

Hassocks own...Sue Hatton Tell us about your background...

I was born in Swindon, Wiltshire, and worked as an administrator in the Health Service. I moved to London where I worked briefly for a honey importer, based in Oxford Street. However, I missed the Health Service so took up the post of Medical Committee Clerk at St Thomas’s Hospital and then worked at the Royal London Hospital in the East End. I got married and moved to Hassocks in 1975 with my husband, when he changed jobs.

We had two children, who went to all three schools in Hassocks. I studied with the OU for a degree in psychology, and worked as a teaching assistant for children with special needs at our local infant school for a number of years. I am a governor at The Windmills Junior School and Downlands Senior School in Hassocks.

What made you want to become a councillor?

I was encouraged to become a Parish Councillor to represent ‘the young mums’ of Hassocks back in 1980, and have been there ever since! It seemed a natural progression to try and become a District Councillor to represent the needs of Hassocks people, which I did for eight years from 2007 – 2015.

This time around, after my recent re-election in June 2017, there is an even greater need to represent and support the needs of our village because of the amount of housing proposed. My membership of the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group has given me the opportunity to try and deal with infrastructure issues which our growing village confronts.

What do you hope to achieve for Hassocks?

A fair balance of affordable homes for those who need them, and to preserve the village atmosphere of caring and friendliness that we are all lucky to have.

It is so nice to pass people in the street who say ‘good morning’ – who may not even know you – but who are glad to be residents of our village and to share ‘the time of day’.

Age Concern Hassocks Age Concern Hassocks at the Pauline Thaw Centre is a friendly, welcoming social day centre, helping older people to enjoy their later life in a caring environment. It serves Hassocks and the surrounding villages, from Ditchling in the east to Poynings and Sayers Common in the west.

In June 2017 its kitchen achieved yet another five-star review from Environmental Health inspectors. Here you can try a delicious, freshly-cooked three-course lunch for just ÂŁ5, served Monday to Friday at 12:15pm.

You can also enjoy a cup of tea or coffee on any weekday or Saturday morning and experience the lovely selection of homemade cakes and biscuits. Should you require assistance the centre has a new minibus and we can collect you for a small charge and take you home again after lunch.

The centre is wheelchair-friendly and a variety of donated mobility aids are often available to borrow or buy, including wheelchairs. The volunteer-run charity shop, open weekdays and Saturday mornings, makes a tremendous contribution to the ongoing costs of the centre. Donations of any items you no longer require are always welcome.

There are many activities that you can get involved in, including quizzes, armchair exercises and singing.

There are also various on-going clubs such as art, keep fit, Canasta and Mah-Jong. The centre also organises regular subsidised outings and entertainment for you to join in.

Age Concern Hassocks cares about the well-being of its visitors and has an in-house chiropodist/podiatrist and two hairdressers. Action for Deafness offer free, monthly NHS hearing aid checks and replacement batteries on the first Tuesday of the month from 10am for those with hearing loss.

The centre is a self-funded, registered charity and relies heavily on the support of the local community, local businesses, volunteers and donations. Annual accounts are published on its website: www.achassocks. co.uk.

It has a small group of dedicated employees and lots of volunteers, without whom the centre could not operate. New volunteers are always welcome, especially minibus drivers or escorts. The centre is also looking for people to join the six current trustees (also volunteers) to help with administration, fundraising or managing projects. Their Chairman, John Rose, would love to hear from you if you might be interested.

Welcome to a heathier Hassocks...

Healthy Living Hassocks...

Welcome to the first healthy living column for the Hassocks Village Directory. I’m super excited to be able to regularly share with you how Aspire Fitness Solutions is contributing to making Hassocks a fabulously healthy and active place to live.

Alongside our regular classes and personal training we support getting out into the beautiful local countryside, running and walking and sharing health news via our Facebook groups: We Run! Hassocks, Wonderful Walks of Wellness and Healthy Living Hassocks. These groups are free and friendly, offering an opportunity to get involved at no cost at all. The walking group just started at the beginning of July and has already had walks going out nearly every day. We Run! Hassocks has been going for over five years and has over 300 members. We Run! also organises a free community run called the Hassocks Hash which happens every fourth Friday of the month and heads out from the Purple Carrot Café at 7.30pm.

There are runs for all abilities from 4K to over 5 miles and often now there’ll be someone keen to walk a route as well. We often have kids join in too (as long as they bring an adult along) and everyone is welcome. After the run we stay for a drink and a chat at the café and

it’s a great way to meet and hear about other runners’ latest triumphs and tribulations. You’ll get advice on routes, be inspired to join in events and find out where to get the best sports massage locally. If you’d like to join in, just ask to join the group on Facebook or come along to the Purple Carrot and introduce yourself at the next Hash.
