HORTICULTURAL & CONSERVATION CLUBS & SOCIETIES HASSOCKS HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

OLDLAND MILL TRUST

Each month we have a different speaker on a horticultural topic. Occasional outings and 3 horticultural shows a year which include flowers, vegetables, floral art, handicraft and a children’s class, photography, painting and cookery. New members welcome. Membership £7 per year.

The Trust has restored Oldland Windmill off Ockley Lane, Hassocks, so that it is now the oldest regularly working windmill in Sussex.

Volunteers with practical skills are still needed to ensure that regular maintenance is carried out. Volunteers are also welcomed to train as Millers, act as Stewards and assist with Admin and Fund-raising. The volunteers’ working day is Thursday throughout the year, and the public are welcome to drop in any Thursday morning. Open Afternoons are held on the first Sunday of each month from April to October with Special Event Days on 7th May, 2nd July and 3rd September when a free shuttle bus service is run from the Eastern end of Grand Avenue, Hassocks (opposite the Thatched Inn) from noon to 4.00 pm.

DITCHLING MORRIS DANCING Ditchling Morris was formed in 1985 as a mixed family side. Our main aims are to maintain our heritage and an interest in Morris dancing to encourage participation by dancers and musicians of both genders and all ages, and to be of benefit to the community by providing dance displays at community events and other public occasions.

We support Ditchling village events throughout the year. We dance mainly Cotswold style Morris interspersed with some dances from the English/Welsh borders. We practise throughout the year in the United Reformed Church Hall in Hassocks on Thursday evenings. Within Ditchling Morris we have a Mummer group who perform Sussex Plays generally during the winter months, with the main event at the Bull Hotel in Ditchling on Boxing Day. DITCHLING VILLAGE ASSOCIATION

Hassocks Amenity Association is a registered Charity. It seeks to maintain an attractive rural environment in Hassocks, Keymer and Clayton which is in keeping with changing times. It was founded over 40 years ago, primarily to prevent trees being felled by developers.

Today it supports ‘Trees for Hassocks’ but has widened its activities to include major projects.

These include over ten years of campaigning for a new station, monitoring rail services and representing users’ views to the rail authorities, the launch and organisation of the Village Lottery, the restoration of Spitalford Bridge plus the provision of a bus shelter and seat, and the planting of the raised beds in Keymer Road and elsewhere in the village .

The Ditchling Village Association (DVA) was formed in 1947 to co-ordinate the activities of the various clubs and societies in the village and continues as an organising body working in co-ordination with numerous and varied local organisations to promote co-operation between all sections of the community. SERVICE ORGANISATIONS SCHOOLS COMMUNITY DITCHLING VILLAGE ORCHARD SUPPORT GROUP The Ditchling Village Orchard is located in Boddington’s Lane. This peaceful place has been created for the benefit of all. In 2014 local volunteers planted traditional Sussex apple trees, plums, two pear trees, a quince and cobnuts. The new hedge (at the lower end of the Orchard) is a wildlife-friendly mix of hazel, field maple, spindleberry, guelder rose and wayfaring trees.

We are grateful to the Turner Dumbrell Foundation who made the land available and funded the planting and site preparation.

Special thanks to the organisations and individuals whose donations helped purchase trees: Ditchling Scouts, Ditchling Village Association, Valerie Winter, Ditchling WI, Ditchling Downs WI, Ditchling Society, Beacon Park Residents Association, Ditchling Horticultural Society.

The Orchard Support Group is a friendly team of volunteers who maintain the orchard by watering, mowing, weeding and pruning. We also run the Apple Day event on the village green in early October each year and this has quickly become a very popular family event.

If you can help, or have ideas for orchard activities, please get in touch.

We issue an email newsletter several times each year to ensure that our supporters are kept up to date with news of activities, working parties, etc and progress at the Orchard.

FOOTPATHS CONSERVATION SOCIETY We aim to preserve the footpaths and bridleways in the three parishes of Ditchling, Westmeston and Streat by walking them regularly.
