Face up to Food Waste

Did you know that food makes up more than a third of rubbish in Brighton & Hove? (1) Or that, in the UK, around 15 million tonnes of food is thrown away each year, half of it from our homes? (2)

Would it surprise you to know that the 1 billion hungry people in the world could receive all of their nutritional needs on a mere quarter of the food that is wasted in the UK, USA and Europe? (3)

Whether on a local, national or international scale, the facts about food waste are truly shocking. By facing up to this, we can create positive change to help malnourished and impoverished people, as well as alleviate the strain that our agricultural practices are putting on the environment. Not sure where to start?

HASL’s Food Waste Collective is a hub for people who are passionate about addressing food waste in Brighton & Hove. We work to support sustainable, ethical alternatives for the tonnes of perfectly good food that is thrown away from retailers, businesses and farms every year. The Collective hosts community actions, talks and social events, as well as supporting other local initiatives tackling food waste in Sussex. They have been a hive of activity recently and are looking to roll out some incredibly exciting events in the coming year to make Brighton and Hove see food waste differently. by Aimee Loveday

The 2014 Hanover Beer Festival...

is confirmed for October 3rd and 4th. We are beginning to plan for it now, which involves hiring marquees, stillage for the barrels, checking our lights and so on - the physical facilities needed. When we’ve got all that in place we’ll be looking for volunteers to help with set up, break down, and, of course working on each night. We’ll also be contacting sponsors - local firms and groups who’d like to have their names linked with Hanover’s biggest and best party of the year. If you want to be kept in touch with the latest news, go to our contact page at www.hanovercommunity.org.uk, go to the Hanover Beer Festival page and look for the “Subscribe via Email” box.

The Walmer Castle Review by Anne-Marie Krolick

Walking into the Walmer Castle was like stepping into a good friend’s living room. With all the clientele being greeted with a bright hello, whether it was from the staff or the other regulars, everyone seemed right at home. By 5.30pm on this lovely spring evening, the pub was already buzzing with people obviously attracted by the Tuesday night ‘2 for 1 meal deal’, so, as the children settled down to do battle with a brilliant Star Wars chess set (every pub should have one!) the grown-ups bravely faced up to the challenge of the Specials Board! With an extensive menu of homemade food featuring locally sourced meat and fish, the choice is almost overwhelming, but in the end we both opted for a home-baked pie: mine, a vegetarian version with wild mushroom and asparagus, whilst my partner couldn’t resist the steak and chorizo. As we waited for our meals to arrive, we couldn’t help notice the other diners’ dinners as they emerged from the kitchen: hearty looking steaks and towering burgers, brightly coloured fresh salads with golden fried new potatoes topped with a whole crispy fried rainbow trout. Regret for our choice fleetingly flashed across our minds! But we needn’t have worried - as soon as our platters arrived, all comparisons ceased as we set to our amazing-looking fare. The pies were encased in a crispy golden pastry, firm to the bite, but then crumbled and melted in the mouth, the contents packed with hearty chunks of rich wild mushroom and fresh al dente asparagus, bound together in a delicious creamy sauce. The steak and chorizo was flavourful, sweet and tender. Although the meals we chose were part of the special 2 for 1, there was absolutely no skimping on the quantities, with generous portions of veg and enough mustard-mash potatoes to recreate any mountain range of your choice, topped with a golden fluffy yorkie and doused in a

lake of rich, dark gravy. In spite of being full to breaking point, somehow we managed to find a tiny space for desserts! Whilst our little one tucked into a knickerbocker glory the size of his head, we shared a tasting platter of puddings which included a dreamy crème brûlée, moist chocolate gateaux, ice cream, fresh fruit and a mound of super-sticky-sweet chocolate deliciousness! All in all, the Walmer Castle offers incredible value for money without compromising on taste and quality, with different deals every night of the week and a roast which is served right up until 9pm on Sundays. This pub is a great option whether you are looking for somewhere for a special celebratory night out, or just fancy a bit of a mid-week treat.

We love to feature local Hanover people in the Directory. Meet Li Mills...

Local Person...Li Mills What is your name and where in Hanover do you live? I’m Li Mills from Lincoln Street, where I live with my husband, Matt, and two teenagers.

How long have you lived here? 19 years in our house, but I lodged in Lincoln Street previously. What do you most like about living in Hanover? The friendly neighbourhood feel, kids playing in the street, being able to walk everywhere. What would you most like to see improved in the area? Less rubbish and dog poo. People keeping their recycling off the street until collection day. Would prefer not to be woken by people loudly discussing their sex lives whilst having a fag in the garden late at night.

What is the most enjoyable part of your job? I adore it and count my blessings every day. I sing with fantastic people, some of whom undergo a real transformation. The sense of community is brilliant. And I absolutely love arranging songs, which I do for other artists too. What would someone need to do to get involved? Wham Jam, Jammy Dodgers and The Jamned are all recruiting. Email limills68@hotmail.com. Do you perform yourself? New York Dollies (newyorkdollies.co.uk) - three gals and a ukulele performing punk classics in vintage doo-wop style (swearing optional) - are available for gigs, weddings, parties and corporate events. A nice change from waving my arms around with my back to the audience…

We notice you run quite a few local choirs…tell us more. Some parents at my toddler music group, Baby Jam (now run by wonderful Emily Carver), asked if I’d sing with them, cos, you know, Hop Little Rabbits isn’t a huge challenge. Jam Tarts began as a fourweek course….and is now a 60-strong indie choir, celebrating our 10th anniversary this year. We sing unusual arrangements of songs by artists such as Joy Division, The Cure, PJ Harvey and Nick Cave. I also run Wham Jam Thank You Ma’am (a daytime version), The Jamned (a monthly drop-in) and Jammy Dodgers (for teenagers). The choirs have raised over £10,000 for Billy Bragg’s charity, Jail Guitar Doors. I lead the Alzheimer’s Society Singing For The Brain at Brighton Museum. We’ve rebelled and call ourselves Jammy Codgers.

Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team

Rise in Houses of Multiple Occupation

Census figures show an increase of 45 per cent in rented housing in Hanover and Elm Grove between 2001 and 2011. The overall percentage of rented housing in the ward now stands at 35 per cent.

Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) account for the overwhelming majority of the rented homes. Licences have been issued for 208 larger HMOs of three or more storeys occupied by five or more people living in two or more families. Since the council introduced licensing for smaller HMOs in November, 500 licence applications have been received in Hanover and Elm Grove. Fire safety improvements were needed in two thirds of the 430 smaller HMOs where full licences have been issued. Students occupy most of the HMOs. Dampness (37.78 per cent) is the most common complaint from private sector tenants, followed by disrepair (20.58 per cent). A private sector stock condition survey carried out in Brighton and Hove in 2008 revealed that 36.9 per cent of private rented housing in the city failed the Decent Homes Standard on safety grounds and because of poor insulation. “Neighbours have reported what they believe to be

84 unlicensed HMOs in the ward,” said Hanover and Elm Grove Councillor Bill Randall. “ if you believe there are unlicensed HMOs in your street, please contact me. We need to ensure all HMOs in the ward are safe and well-maintained. I urge tenants to contact me, if they feel their living conditions are below standard. My contact details are 01273 294366 or bill.randall@brighton-hove.gov.uk.” Next Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team Meeting is on Monday 2nd June at 7pm. IN: The Hanover Pub, Queens Park Rd ALL ARE WELCOME

Hanover Dad... On the Move

Hi everyone, I’m sorry I never wrote an article last month. I was a bit too busy because I’ve just moved house. We were in a relatively small chain and we’ve only moved about 300 metres down the road, plus I’ve also seen those Phil and Kirsty characters on the telly, all smiling and flirting and the like, so somehow I thought it would all be quite easy. It’s surprising really, because when you decide to move it all seems reasonably straightforward in your head. You would think you’d just find a new house, someone then finds your old house, you all shake hands and get excited, and then you move. It’s not really like that though, is it? It’s all so stressful and everything seems to go right down to the very last minute. Basically, after months of inactivity, we exchanged with seven minutes to spare before everything collapsed, and completed the following morning – a truly relaxing experience as you can imagine! The whole process just becomes all-consuming, and the worst thing is that, whilst you are mad with stress and anxiety and can’t think of anything else in the world other than the words ‘exchange’ and ‘complete’, you always seem to end up talking to someone you we loved and just like exchanged and completed meet who says something like - “Yeah, we found it all in about 35 minutes after putting the offer in. Yeah, really easy, actually. Yeah, we just saw the property we’re just like really lucky like that.” Thankfully, I’m not a violent man in these situations. Still, we got there in the end, and now that we’re in our new place it’s great. The people who bought our old house are a lovely young couple from London, and I envy them a bit actually, as they remind me of my wife and me when we first moved to Hanover. Hopefully they are feeling as excited and slightly bemused as we were when we arrived here. They will enjoy all the highs and lows that living in Hanover has to offer, such as a being in a lovely community and having great pubs and parks on your doorstep. They will also really get to ‘understand’ hills and learn how to park their car in a space the size of a postage stamp, but, like the rest of us residents, they will also soon realise that, all in all, it’s a great place to live and we wouldn’t want it any other way.

Deadline for articles for the June issue is 15th May 2014 but it is a good idea to call ASAP to reserve a space. To advertise call 01273
