Catriona Lane of Totland Road is a teacher and runs Brighton Food Tours with Angela Brightwell. They have recently launched the VIB (Very Independent Brighton) Tour to celebrate Brighton’s independent food businesses. How long have you lived in Hanover?

Well, it depends how strict you want to be about Hanover boundaries! I have ricocheted between the Lewes Road, Coleman Street, Seville Street and Totland Road over the past 18 years.

Featuring local Hanoverian, Catriona Lane...

Hanover Person - Catriona Lane

What is your favourite place in Hanover to eat?

The Independent is definitely a new favourite. Such a simple and well thought out menu and the bar is very well run and has a great range of adventurous booze. Tell us more about Brighton Food Tours...

Angela and I started work on this last November and have been very, very happy to see it launch in April. The independent food scene in Brighton has taken off in the past few years and you can now get quality produce from a whole range of excellent retailers all over the city. It’s not a gourmet tour but a smorgasbord experience with a little bit of everything: chocolate, seafood, street food, a smattering of food politics and local history and a whole lot of local producers who can’t wait to share their stories and products. You get a 2½ hour tour and lots of tasters as well as discounts if you shop on the tour. Locals who come on the tour have all commented on how it has opened their eyes to the quality food experiences on their doorstep. We are committed to supporting

our local independent retailers and want to ensure they get return footfall after the tour. Do you think you might bring a food tour to Hanover one day?

Oh yes! We are starting with the original tour, the VIB, but hope to expand to some more bespoke tours as time goes on. We would love to hear from Hanover food producers and caterers who may like to be involved at some point, so do get in touch. How can we find out more?

Our website is www.brightonfoodtours.com and from there you can link to our Eventbrite pages to book on. You can check our Facebook page (Brighton Food Tours); we are on Visit Brighton and Trip Advisor too. You can also email us at: hello@brightonfoodtours.com.

The best houseguests you could ever dream of. So what are you waiting for?

Swifts of Hanover

The birds you can see at the moment skidding madly over Hanover houses in their ‘screaming parties’ are swifts.

cally, the more we insulate our homes, the fewer opportunities swifts have to breed as they rely on very small gaps in roofs to make their homes in. It is likely that some of the swifts flying over Hanover are nesting here but you probably wouldn’t even know it. Why? Because they: • Are very quiet when on the nest • Only here for 12 weeks a year • Leave (next to) no trace

The fastest birds in level flight, they travel non-stop from Africa and return faithfully each May to the same nest sites to raise their swiftlets. “They’ve made it again, Which means the globe’s still working, the Creation’s Still waking refreshed, our summer’s Still all to come” (Ted Hughes ‘Swifts’) The only time swifts ‘land’ is when they enter a nest to breed. Fact. Indeed, it’s estimated that swifts fly around 190,000km each year. This includes an average of 500km per day! Lunch in Paris anyone? We are incredibly lucky to be able to enjoy these stunning migrant birds as their numbers have been in steep decline (approx 40% fewer than just 20 years ago). This is in part due to a loss of nest sites. Ironi-

What can I do? I hear you ask! 1. Why don’t you consider putting up a simple and inexpensive swift nest box? Visit www. swift-conservation.org for a wide selection of purchasing or DIY options. And if you are putting up scaffolding to work on the roof, try and be bird-friendly and don’t do this in breeding season of May-August. 2. Tell me if you have seen swifts flying low in between houses at street level (this means they might be nesting nearby) or even entering a possible nest site. The more we know about where they are, the more we can do to protect them and encourage others to join them. Please contact me at Rebecca.ashwood@rspb.org.uk with any information. In fact, please contact me if you have questions about any of the above or visit www.RSPB.org.uk for more information on swifts and what we, as a community, can do to help them. Thank you. The latest musings of Hanover Dad....

Hanover Dad...Shoe Blindness If you type into a popular search engine the term ‘shoe blindness’ it will ask you “did you mean snow blindness?” – well no actually I didn’t mean snow blindness. Snow blindness is fairly common, especially to the more alpine amongst us, and is a condition where the eyes are affected by exposure to high levels of the sun’s UV rays. Shoe blindness on the other hand is not particularly common and seems to solely affect two thirds of the population of my house. Let me explain, my wife and children get in from every trip and remove their shoes in the hallway. Not that unusual I hear you say, but then on the next trip out they will wear a different pair of shoes, return and leave those in the hallway also. After several days the volume of shoe-matter builds to a point where you can’t get round it, and you have to do some sort of elongated stride to get past. Do my wife and kids see this? Of course they don’t. They just plough their scooters through the pile like some sort of shoe battering ram, or kick them out of the way like they are kicking leaves. They just don’t see them, you see – shoe blindness! I see the shoes though, because if I didn’t, we would eventually be trapped in our own home by a mountain of the things. I get their shoes and put each pair neatly on an individual stair, under the premise that as they pass them they will take them upstairs and put them neatly away. This doesn’t happen (obviously due to the shoe blindness again) and I just end up seething for several days until I crack and take them upstairs myself. I even bought a shoe rack for the hallway and you know what happens? They leave their shoes next to it, not on it, but scattered around it! This was the final straw and I’m embarrassed to say I ‘lost it’. In a rage

I shouted, “If people aren’t going to use the shoe rack or tidy properly, then I’ll see to it that nobody is allowed shoes!” Once I’d calmed down, my wife asked me, “So no shoes allowed eh? I assume that means you’ll get rid of that one stinky pair of trainers that you’ve chosen to marinate your feet in for the past two years?” – She has a point; maybe I’ve got shoe blindness as well.

Hanover Day by Steve Chapman

Dancing in the Street? Hanover Day Update We are aware that people have a desire to see Hanover Day resurrected. The HCA has supported Hanover Day, both financially and with volunteers, and two of the Hanover Day committee members work actively within the Community Centre. The committee has decided that, as there has been no Hanover Day recently for many reasons, not least the cost, the remaining balance in the account would be transferred to a restricted reserve held by the HCA. This reserve would enable residents in the area of benefit to apply for a grant if they wished to organise any community festivals/street parties. There would be a maximum limit and any request for funding would need to show what the money would be allocated to. The HCA committee will then consider each request. For more information please contact the centre office.

hanover Here is a fun packed day taking place on the Level this month...

The first in a new series by the local WI...

TAKEPART 2016 Sport & Physical Activity Festival

Hanover Queen’s WI

Saturday 18 June - Sunday 3 July

Brighton & Hove City Council’s Sport & Physical Activity Team invites you to join in the biggest and best celebrations of active lifestyles in the country - hundreds of fun events and activities throughout two weeks in June/July.

Don’t miss the TAKEPART Festival Launch Day at The Level on Saturday 18 June from 12 noon to 5pm - a fun-packed day to launch the festival in one of the city’s great parks, showcasing a huge range of different activities ranging from ping pong, martial arts, cycling and skating to much more! It’s a great way to find out what’s on offer across the city. There are lots of different activities and sports to try out, as well as stalls, a disability active zone and a food area. Suitable for all ages and abilities. You can enjoy performances and demonstrations, find out about local clubs and groups, plus speak to health and fitness experts.

Next meeting: Thursday 16th June at 7.30 upstairs at the Islingword Inn on the corner of Islingword Road and Queen’s Park Road. The Brighton and Hove Food Partnership will talk about minimising food waste and generally how to eat well for less. Your Local WI recipe of the month: Sue’s never-fail super-easy rice Mix 1 cup of rice with 2¼ cups of boiled water. Stir. Cook in a covered microwave-proof dish for 12 minutes on high. Fluff with a fork when cooked. Your local WI hint of the month: Do not waste your money on expensive water-softening tablets for your washing machine. A tablespoon of soda crystals that cost £1 a bag work just as well. For more information on the WI, contact Sue Margolis at susan. margolis@hotmail.co.uk or 01273 686830.

This month sees the first ever Hanover Food Fair...

The First Hanover Food Fair

Rebecca Lloyd and The Oil Society, who import and sell premium extra virgin olive oil, are organising the first Hanover Food Fair at the Hanover Community Centre from 2pm on Saturday 18th June.

Originally conceived as a small occasion for people to taste a range of top quality olive oils from a number of Brighton importers (there’ll be Tuscan, Sicilian and Spanish oils to taste), demand was such that the event will now spill over into the Community Centre garden to accommodate all the local producers who want to take part. From experienced long-standing Hanover stalwarts like the Hanover Sauce Company, to new producers like Veronica Czajkowska who makes homemade granola sweetened with honey and packed full of nuts and seeds, Hanoverians (and any Brightonian willing to make the climb) will be able to enjoy a range of goodies from cakes, biscuits and tarts, to jams, chutneys, hot sauces, salsas, honey and mustard, as well as nut milks and butters, and a selection of fantastic extra virgin olive oil. Fanny’s of Hanover will be running a pop-up café so you can enjoy a cuppa in the garden. As a bonus www.italian-market.co.uk will be selling amazing fresh

News from the Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team...

Hanover & Elm Grove Local Action Team

Well, the summer is nearly upon us and we have all filled in our Parking Consultation forms – and hopefully returned them!

The council are now counting the results and we should know where we stand very shortly. Great to see some good (and bad) discussion on social media, along with one or two interesting (if not entirely accurate) leaflets through our doors. Where possible HEGLAT members have tried to clarify a few of the erroneous points and to enable people to make a level-headed judgement based on proper information rather than just Chinese whispers, as is often the case. We await the results with baited breath. The subject of communal bins has raised its ugly head again, with at least one person who has been suffering from these objects right outside their front doors and bedroom windows making complaints to Cityclean. This is a thorny issue and one which can make some people’s lives not only very unpleasant but also very smelly. We are inviting Cityclean to the next full HEGLAT on June 6th to get an update on all things rubbish and recycling.

It also seems that the University of Brighton has been taking on some houses onto their Head Leases scheme which have previously been refused a HMO licence on the grounds of saturation in an area. Head Leased properties do not appear on the HMO register and therefore can slip through the net. This will be the subject of a future HEGLAT. Many thanks and we look forward to seeing you at 7pm on June 6th at The Hanover.

If you were ever tempted to drop litter...

Drop Litter – Pick up a Fine!

LifeLines aims to improve the health and wellbeing of older people living in East Brighton. If you are aged 50 or over then there are lots of opportunities for you to get involved. People caught dropping litter, flytipping and allowing their dogs to foul in public places anywhere in Brighton & Hove now face £75 on-the-spot fines.

Enforcement officers, employed by private company 3GS Environmental Solutions, began patrolling in the city in March. The new service supports the council’s strategy to encourage everyone to produce less waste and recycle more. It aims to tackle antisocial and illegal behaviour, improve the environment and reduce waste clean-up and disposal costs. Each year the council receives dozens of complaints from residents about fly-tipping, litter and other antisocial behaviour and the issues are often raised at residents’ groups and community meetings. The scheme was approved by councillors last year and 3GS was awarded the contract following a competitive tendering process. It covers fly-tipping, littering, flyposting, graffiti, dog fouling and disposing of

commercial waste illegally. The enforcement officers wear body cameras to gather evidence and identify offenders. The council follows Government guidelines to ensure that any fines are issued responsibly. Officers also work with businesses, schools and other community groups to educate and raise awareness of environmental crime. They are looking out for good examples of people picking up litter and improving their neighbourhoods and there is a gift voucher reward scheme as part of the initiative. Councillor Gill Mitchell, Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “We are often asked to take a tougher stance around antisocial behaviour such as dropping litter, flyposting, dog fouling and graffiti. This enforcement scheme, along with the publicity and education programme, will tackle the problem head-on and send out a strong message that deliberate antisocial behaviour which blights our city will not be tolerated.”

Those issued with a fixed penalty notice who refuse to pay could end up in court and not only be ‘named and shamed’ but also landed with a much higher penalty and possibly court costs. Regular updates on how the scheme is operating and the effect it is having on improving the city’s environment will be reported to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee. Under the terms of the agreement, no targets will be set for issuing fines and 3GS is prohibited from paying its officers any form of performance pay, commission or bonuses linked in any way to the number of tickets individual officers issue. Here is a local councillor update...

Councillor Report – Dick Page

I am very pleased the council thought better of scrapping our 37B bus. It shows our comments can make a difference! Remember, it’s not just for those without cars or with walking difficulties – I get it regularly with heavy shopping from North Road. Not so good is the stopping of the Hanover Centre community composting scheme. The nearest one is now in The Patch park. With our small gardens we need composting to stop it adding to the general refuse. The Food Partnership are coordinating the search for another site, and need volunteers to keep the bins tidy and hygienic. Contact Leanne, 01273 431709 / Leanne@bhfood.org.uk if you can help. Off-licences on the Lewes Road: there is an application by the Apple Cart convenience store near Elm Grove. This would make eleven between there and the Vogue Gyratory; there are two just across the road already, and near the Level it could aggravate problems of antisocial drinking. I have objected that it may also add to late night rowdiness, with our large student population. There will be a public Licensing Panel hearing, probably in July. Now the initial parking zone (CPZ) consultation is closed, all areas that want one will now be consulted

on more detailed proposals. Reassuringly HEGLAT looked at census data on vehicle ownership and concluded there would be enough spaces for all those registered in the area. I will support residents’ choices. I have been helping residents with individual problems, including a learning disabled young person hit with a £75 fine for dropping a cigarette end by the new G3S enforcement contractor. Bizarrely we are told they have no discretion to issue warnings. Also I have questioned why a bereaved 68-year-old being evicted by their landlord after 13 years, with health problems and caring responsibilities, cannot be housed by the council.
