hanover Welcome to The Hanover Directory!

This magazine has to be put together two weeks ahead of distribution. With so much uncertainty at the moment due to the coronavirus, there is a high possibility that some of the events and classes mentioned in our April issue may not go ahead, so please do check before attending. We still have all our usual features for you this month, including Councillor News from Steph Powell and advice on environmentally-friendly gardening from Hanover Action. There’s also news of a Children’s Art Trail for Hanover as part of the May Artists Open Houses festival. Let’s hope for some bright weather so that if everything else is cancelled we can at least get out for a walk! The Hanover Directory Team info@hanoverdirectory.co.uk www.hanoverdirectory.co.uk

Hanover History... Race Hill Mill This mill, originally known as the East End mill, was a white post mill with tail-pole. From 1793 it stood south of Sudeley Place, between St George’s Road and Marine Parade. In 1831, the mill was moved to a site at the top of Sussex Street. By then it was known as Taylor’s Mill and in March 1862 it was moved via Queen’s Park Road and Elm Grove to its last site at the top of Bear Road. This photo, dating from about 1912, shows the houses of Belle Vue Cottages in the background. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. hanover hanover News from the council…

New Law to Protect Animals A new law covering the sale of puppies and kittens is due to come into effect from April. ‘Lucy’s Law’ will mean that puppies and kittens can no longer be sold by a pet shop or commercial dealer unless they have bred the animal themselves. Instead, anyone looking to buy or adopt a puppy or kitten under six months must either deal directly with the breeder or an animal rehoming centre. The law is named after Lucy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, who died after being subjected to terrible conditions on a puppy farm. Dogs like Lucy are often kept by breeders to produce multiple litters of puppies, which are taken from their mothers at just a few weeks old and advertised online or sold in pet shops.

Brighton & Hove City Council plays a key part in the fight to protect animal welfare. Many activities involving animals such as selling pets, breeding dogs for sale, boarding cats or dogs or day care for dogs require a licence from the council. Each licence holder is inspected.

The BCCC is an award winning business based just on the edge of the City We make our own High Quality garden and horticultural products including Organic Compost, high grade Top Soil, Mulches, Bark Chip and Woodchip We also provide Brighton & Hove residents with a reasonably priced and efficient Garden Waste and old soil collection and clearance service

The council’s chair of licensing, Councillor Jackie O’Quinn, said: “We do a lot of work to make sure businesses working with animals in the city treat them correctly, so please do always follow the guidance if you’re thinking of getting a pet. We come across awful stories of animals kept in horrendous conditions from unscrupulous people dealing illegally in dogs and cats. Sometimes the puppies and kittens never recover. So please never buy a pet without checking the trader’s licence and the conditions they’ve been kept in.” If you’re thinking of buying a cat or dog, follow these guidelines to help combat the illegal trade in pet animals:

consider getting a rescue animal from a reputable UK rehoming organisation – you can check if the organisation is a member of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes if you’re thinking of buying a puppy, always ask to see a copy of the trader’s licence or ask for the licence number so you can check with the local council

never buy a puppy or kitten without asking to see them with their mum and the conditions they live in never buy a puppy or kitten younger than eight weeks old.

If you have any concerns, contact the council’s Animal Warden team by emailing animalwardens@brighton-hove.gov.uk or calling 01273 294266. FREE LOCAL DELIVERY

hanover hanover There’s a new trail for children as part of the Hanover Arts Trail…

Hanover Children’s Art Trail

Hundreds of artists and makers across Brighton & Hove open their doors this May as part of the city’s Artists Open Houses. This year the Hanover Arts Trail is made up of seven unique venues, including official AOH brochure cover star Becky Blair opening her house for the first time, and an opportunity to explore the expansive Phoenix Art Studios. Families are a huge part of Hanover and we would really like to invite our youngest art connoisseurs to come and enjoy looking round the venues with their parents. That is why this year we are launching the Hanover Children’s Art Trail!

Every venue will have a fun question to answer about that location and a craft material to collect. After visiting each house on the trail the children will have collected enough creative bits to make a fun craft at home.

We are also encouraging our mini-Picassos to get arty at the venues and take part in our Children’s Drawing Competition! There will be three age categories: PreSchool 0-5, Infants 6-8 & Juniors 9-11, with winners receiving a £30 Cass Art voucher and a £10 voucher for runners-up. Each house will have a creative space for kids to do their own artwork and these entries can either be submitted at the venues or tag us @ hanoverartstrail on Instagram with your children’s artwork, making sure you include their names and ages. We would like to thank the following sponsors of the Hanover Arts Trail whose support helps us run these events: Fern & Pine Garden Design Studio, Grove

hanover hanover The annual Spring in the Patch weekend…

Dance in the Spring!

William Clarke Park, Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th April 2020

After an eternally wet and windy winter, the Friends of William Clarke Park invite you to unbutton your rain coats, throw off your scarves and “dance in the spring!” at their annual Spring in the Patch weekend of events. On Saturday 25th April, 5pm to 10pm, be prepared to dosey-doe at the ‘Patch Ceilidh’ where the Brighton Ceilidh Collective will provide music and a caller, to get you on your feet. There will be a bar, food stalls and a few games too. The entrance fee is ‘pay-asyou feel’, with a suggested donation of £5 per head (£2.50 under 16 years). Organiser Duncan Blinkhorn said: “The event is only possible with the generosity of participants and a huge volunteer effort. This year we are delighted to have some funding from the Community Fund as part of celebrating 25 years of the National Lottery. Any surplus from the event will be used to pay for a Patch portaloo, for the convenience of park users over the summer.”

On Sunday 26th April, noon to 6pm, the ‘Spring in the Patch’ community fair will offer more live music, stalls, a bar, games, archery and other workshops, and the launch of the ‘Patch 2030’ consultation to inform a vision for the park over the next ten years. For those concerned about restrictions linked to the Coronavirus, the organisers emphasise that these are outdoor events with attendance under 500 and so unlikely to be affected by restrictions. Hand-wash facilities will be available. Bric-a-brac and other stalls welcome. To book a stall contact miranda.razz@outlook.com; tel: 07931 299303.

C

The Patch can be accessed from Hartington Road and Picton Street off Franklin Road. Further details about the Patch and these events are available on the Friends of William Clarke Park Facebook page and at www.williamclarkepark.org The annual Patchfest summer festival will NOT be held this year and will return in July 2021.

Experts support Will Writing Fortnight

Hanover Queens WI

Thirteen local will writers are offering their expertise during Will Writing Fortnight, 11-22 May 2020, in return for a donation to Martlets hospice.

For many people, thinking about what happens after they’ve gone isn’t easy; however, having a professionally written will can offer peace of mind. Having a will is particularly important for families, parents, cohabiting couples and for those with dependants who are unable to care for themselves. The Martlets Will Writing Fortnight booking period for appointments is open from 13th April until 8th May; anyone can set up an appointment with a local will writer by selecting from the list of supporting companies at www.martlets. org.uk/give-in-your-will. Booking through the Martlets scheme offers a significant discount on will writing, as the donation required is only £150 for a single will and £200 for joint wills. For further information, or for a free copy of our Gifts in Wills booklet, visit www.martlets.org.uk/give-inyour-will or contact Gary on 01273 718778 or email gary.moyle@martlets.org.uk

Some good news in that a small ward budget of £3,000 is available for ward community groups to bid for things like tree planting. So far, £500 is going to the Bike Hub, £200 to the Phoenix Community Garden, and £300 to Hanover Action. This will leave £2,000 in the safe hands of the Communities Forum, who have agreed to guard these funds, and to oversee the bidding process from local groups for pots of money for local projects. Anyone interested in bidding please pop along to the next meeting on Wednesday 22nd April, 18.30-20.30 (venue tbc). Details can be found online at: https://hanoverandelmgrove.net

During the meeting, I spoke passionately about reversing the proposed cut to the council’s Equalities and Third Sector teams. Our charities are a vital cog in the delivery of measurable outcomes, and in empowering some of the most vulnerable. The proposals set out in the council’s budget plans included cutting Equalities Managers, who are experienced and knowledgeable in frontline work with charities. Their work underpins vital work in tackling domestic violence and homelessness; in supporting disabled, BAME and LGBT+ residents, and in ensuring that adult education is made available, despite cutbacks. With hate crime sadly on the rise, it is essential that equalities remain a top priority. We put over £11m into the budget to tackle climate change, homelessness and inequality and without cutting other services to pay for it. The result is evidence that Greens do what is best for the city, and we will continue to work together with Labour Councillors on the joint areas of: our city of sanctuary, addressing housing and homelessness, and tackling climate chaos. Ward news: Ward councillors were shocked when heavy traffic, including lorries, were recently diverted through the ward’s narrow streets because of the Valley Gardens resurfacing work. One lorry smashed into a property on Billam Terrace, causing extensive damage. We ward councillors have stressed to officers that traffic diversions and signage must only direct traffic via main routes, and not through our ward’s narrow streets, which are unsuitable for lorries.

hanover It’s a good time to visit the Brighton Bike Hub community cycle workshop…

Get your wheels working for summer

Our city is steadily edging towards a future that is more cycle-friendly – the Valley Gardens improvement scheme being the latest example of this. Imperatives to reduce our carbon footprint, improve air quality, reduce obesity and to get more affordably from A to B are calling more of us to saddle up and exercise our body-power, on our bikes. If you’ve been waiting for a fair-weather moment to get out on your wheels, but found them creaking and in need of TLC, you’ll find some welcome support down at the Brighton Bike Hub. This volunteerrun community cycle workshop provides free (donations appreciated) and friendly access to tools and advice, enabling anyone to repair and maintain their bike. New and used parts are available to buy, so nearly everything you need is to hand. The project sustains itself mainly through the sale of refurbished bikes as well as from donations and occasional grants (currently from the Rampion Trust and also from the Hanover & Elm Grove councillor fund). Donations of bikes are warmly welcomed. These are brought back to life or, if beyond redemption, cannibalised for parts.

The Brighton Bike Hub is based at 26b St Martin’s Place, off the Lewes Road. It’s open five days per week (Tues – Sat) from 11am to 6pm. To volunteer or for other information contact 07944 152706 or visit www.brightonbikehub.org

A seedling swap and clim

Hanover Action are holding a seedling/plant swap at Han Hanover Action and the Community Centre gardening gr Hanover Action put the emphasis on pollinator-friendly and climate-friendly gardening. When swapping plants with your friends and neighbours ensure they have been grown without chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Our insects are dying at an alarming rate (75% of global insects have declined over the past 25 years). This is catastrophic for our whole ecosystem and human life. Common products that we use in our gardens are killing bees and other pollinators. These pesticides are also applied to potted plants sold in garden centres to prevent grub infestation, even those marked as ‘bee friendly’. Pesticides are toxic chemicals applied for specific issues, such as killing greenfly, but they reach insects pollinating flowers from the plants they are sprayed on or near. Pesticides contaminate ground, water and air far from where they are applied and have impacts on human health too, including causing cancer.

nover Community Centre on 2nd May from 11 to 1pm. Come along and meet roup. Bring your seedlings/plants to swap or make a small donation. Soil is alive and soil life matters. To maintain a healthy, active soil with plenty of nutrients, use compost and manures. Compost at home or see B&H Food Partnership for community composting. Be aware of the environmental issues when buying compost. Compost that does not state it’s peat free is largely made up of peat. 94 per cent of the UK’s lowland raised peatbogs, one of our rarest and most vulnerable habitats, have been lost and amateur gardeners use 66% of the total peat used in the UK. We’re now helping to destroy those in places like Latvia and Estonia. Peat bogs are considered the most efficient carbon sinks on earth, and sequester 40 times more carbon than our mature woodlands. They are also a flood prevention mechanism, acting as a big sponge in areas like Dartmoor. Crop rotation helps to prevent pests and diseases from building up in the soil. Growing flowers with vegetables attracts beneficial wildlife, such as caterpillar-eating birds and aphid-eating insects.

Garden in a climate and bio-diversity friendly way - stop buying peat-based compost and sign and share the petition on the government website to ban the use of peat in gardening and horticulture. Save our insects by signing this petition: https://www.pan-uk.org/take-pesticide-products-off-supermarket-shelves/ www.hasl.org.uk
