WELCOME

Once more the festival is here and the Fiveways Artists group have their Open Houses. Still the original and the best - you can check out the map and read a little more about this year’s offerings on pages 20 and 21. Plenty more local news in this month’s edition, including a great local cookery class that takes place at Varndean regularly, an interesting article sent in about Preston Park cycle track, some local festival events and more! So the recommendation as always is to have a break from work, put the kettle on and have a read. Special mention this month to Julie and team at the Fiveways Deli who are celebrating 10 years in business, serving delicious deli food to the hungry Fiveways community. Congratulations, Julie, and here’s to another 10 years! Have a great festival and enjoy the Open Houses! The Fiveways Directory Team

Fiveways Playcentre – May Open House Saturday, 10th May 2014 11.00am –3.00pm

Fiveways Playcentre on Florence Road will be hosting its very own Open House on Saturday, 10th May to coincide with this year’s Artists’ Open Houses and the Brighton Festival.

It will be very much a family-focussed affair with an emphasis on arts and crafts. This year, the Playcentre will hold an on-the-day ‘silent’ auction of local artists’ work, as well as give a few lucky makers the chance to exhibit and sell their work at the fair. The nursery children are also very much involved and their artwork, created at the setting, will also be on display for parents, grandparents and the general public to buy. A range of fabulous drop-in arts and crafts activities are planned throughout the day and help will be on hand to get those creative juices flowing. You and your children will be able to learn how to make a host of beautiful things and take them home at the end of the session to create your very own house of art! What’s more, there will also be a team of face painters standing by to transform your little one into their very own superhero, fairy, insect or cartoon character. Alongside all this fun, Fiveways will be selling a fantastic array of homemade cakes, delicacies and refreshments, including tea, coffee, squash, wine, beer and Pimm’s. Why not drop into Fiveways Playcentre between 11.00am and 3.00pm on Saturday, 10th May and let the

kids get creative whilst you relax with a cup of tea and slice of delicious cake? Admission £2.00 per child to include all craft activities. Face painting will incur an additional charge. Adults FREE. About Fiveways Playcentre Fiveways is a registered non-for-profit charity that caters for over 200 children aged 2.5 to 11 years old in its preschool setting and before and after school clubs. It was first established in 1965 and since 2010 has been in its very own purpose-built building thanks to a grant from Sure Start, local authority funding and a £125,000 mortgage. The Playcentre relies on fundraising efforts like this year’s Open House to keep its head above the water and continue to offer its services, so everything you can do to help is very much appreciated. If you would like further information about the centre or event, would like to donate a prize for our art auction, exhibit or just want to help, please contact our team via 5ways@talktalkbusiness.net or on 01273 500257. www.fiveways-playcentre.co.uk facebook.com/fivewaysplaycentre

LOCAL ACTIVITIES

We are pleased to feature a regular cooking event that regularily takes place up the hill at Varndean...

Putting taste into healthy cooking! You probably think that healthy eating means eliminating a lot of ingredients you love and especially doing without tasty, indulgent food. This is one reason why two local nutritional therapists, Rani Louise and Nathalie Sansonetti, decided to offer healthy gluten/dairy/sugar-free cookery classes that will completely change the way you think of healthy food! The classes, held at Varndean School once a month, are designed to address specific health issues (digestive problems, IBS, low energy, low immunity, weight issues) and also specific situations where you might need an extra dollop of healthy, tasty food, such as picnics, camping, or for your packed lunches. They offer two hours packed full of nutritional information, cookery demos and lots of fantastic food you’ll cook yourself and take home with you. Still suspicious about the ‘tasty’ element of these classes? Here are some of the delicious recipes on the menu: Sushi rolls; roasted pepper, paprika and cumin houmous; Double Trouble Chocolate Truffles, French savoury galettes with ratatouille; Holey Moley Guacamole…to name but a few scrumptious creations! Here are a few comments from previous attendees: “An incredibly informative and interesting class. Lots of ideas and recipes to get started. A really enjoyable two hours!” C Tompkins “A well-organised and informative session. I’ve actually learned how to make tasty houmous! I will definitely be coming back.” MJ Taylor The programme for the rest of the year includes: 17 May: Beach Body – helping you to reach your ideal weight 14 June: Healthy Picnics & Festival Food 19 July: Healthy Camping Food 27 September: Healthy Packed Lunches 18 October: Cooking to Boost Immunity

Notorious Women of Brighton Walking Tour

A gripping, fun walking tour that explores Brighton’s feminine past, from corsets to wife sales, wayward royals to music-hall stars, early businesswomen to champion swimmers (and the first woman in Britain to ride a motorbike) Do you know the first celebrity ‘kiss and tell’ story was propagated by a woman who once stayed at Marine Parade? Or that the first European woman to visit Timbuktu lived in Kemptown? Or that a cold-blooded murderess who disposed of the body of her little brother down the toilet confessed all in Brighton? Or that America’s favourite showbiz twins were born in the Bear Road area? These two gentle strolls tell the stories of the many outrageous, brilliant, inspiring and sometimes downright badly behaved women with links to Brighton’s past.

The Notorious Women of Brighton walking tour took place several times during the last Fringe and attracted a growing number of visitors, many of whom said ‘why don’t you do one of these in Kemptown?’ New walk ‘Notorious Women of Kemptown’ will run for the first time this year. Louise Hume has also written a women’s history tour of Brighton for Herstoria magazine, which was featured on BBC 4’s Women’s Hour. Devised and lead by Louise Hume, Royal Pavilion guide, teacher and role-player at Preston Manor, Brighton, Hove, and Booth Museums Contact louisebythesea@aol.com, 01273 554291 historywomenbrighton.com

Pottery Gagliano Venture down Hollingdean Road and you’ll find the grey, graffitied front of Rodhus workshops. Walk inside and be amazed by the sheer dynamism of Brighton’s best-loved ceramic studio where everything is possible. Discover Roberto Gagliano’s classically elegant pots based on two decades of throwing and century-old Sicilian tradition. In contrast, there are Tom Peterson’s unique stoneware bottles and Claire Dines’ hand-built sculpture and raku ware. Beyond is the main studio filled with paper-art by rarebit design; jewellery by Abigail Fetherstonaugh, Thomas Clarke and Martylu; photographs by Irene Todaro; mosaics by Marcella Todaro; and landscapes by Eril Nesbitt. PRESTON PARK It would have been during 1948 that I became aware of ‘Club Cycling’ and, through the following year, my workmates introduced me to ‘The Track’ at Preston Park.

WAKE UP TO A WOOD BURNER!

Recently, thanks to the computer (and some luck), the history of ‘The Track’ came to life. The track was constructed by the British Army in 1877 and was originally a flat cinder surface. The cinders were replaced in 1936 by a tarmac surface, and subsequently two corners were banked: at the start of the home straight (Dressing Room Corner) and the exit after the finish line. It remains the longest track in the country, measuring 579.03 metres (633 yards). Racing here began shortly after the end of the war and more details can be found at the website, ‘Cycling at Preston Park’.

If you have an open fire, as much as 80% of the heat goes straight up the chimney. With a wood burning stove you’ll benefit from at least three times more heat. So you’ll just be burning wood - the original carbon neutral fuel - not money.

Track cycling remains very popular and during the summer months there is a weekly meeting, held on Wednesdays and occasional weekends. This is due to the hard work of the Sussex Cycle Racing League (www.scrl.co.uk) and the Preston Park Youth Cycling Club (www.ppycc.org.uk). Younger cyclists are also able to enjoy the track through special sessions on Saturdays. This year, the new season begins on Wednesday 16th April.

Be part of the renewable revolution. Energy Wake Up specialises in the supply and installation of energy-efficient wood burning stoves. From consultation to installation.

It was at the track, in particular on Dressing Room Corner, that I met the Nomads.

info@energywake.co.uk www.energywakeup.co.uk

The Prestonville Nomads Cycling Club (PNCC) was originally formed in 1933, and one can only assume that the club was formed by a group of cyclists who lived in the Brighton area, in particular around the area known as the Seven Dials. Perhaps the inspiration behind the name, this local area includes Prestonville Road and the church, St Luke’s Church, Prestonville. Like most sports, the club didn’t function during the war and the last entry to the club book was January 1940. However, by 1948 the PNCC was re-formed, with £5.25 in the bank. Reg Porter, who went on to run the club for the next fifteen years, became the first entry in the cash book on 1st December. The first meetings were held at the Elephant and Castle along London Road, costing £1 4s 0d each week.

CP C.P. Carpentry & Joinery Ltd. C & G of London Institute.

The list of names in the book brings back memories of the great comradeship we had. I actually paid 5 shillings, about a day’s wages at the time, to join. Some of us are still in touch and a few have continued to ride together. The Nomads were a very successful club, identified by our bright green and yellow jerseys. Through our racing at Pres-

ton Park and on the road, we won many team and individual races as well as Sussex Championships. For many years the Nomads used the downstairs room at the Park View Hotel in Preston Drive as our club room, allowing us to enjoy racing in the summer at the track and adjournments to the pub after. On Sundays however, we enjoyed Club Rides which saw us cycling around the countryside of Sussex and enjoying many lovely teas together. Unfortunately the club ceased again, possibly in 1967, due to the original members growing up, getting married and having families, and consequently work took on a whole new meaning. Another possible factor was the introduction of scooters, for example, the Vespa. In 1978, Geoff Boore and I were members of other clubs but

Alan leading the pack at the Preston Park cycle track

decided we wanted to once again race as ‘green and yellow’. Consequently the Nomads were reformed, this time as ‘the Sussex Nomads’. The Sussex Nomads have since become a very successful and well respected club, both in Sussex and further afield, and have been able to continue the legacy of the Prestonville Nomads. Currently meeting at 9am on Sundays, at Ditchling Village Hall, we continue to enjoy a morning ride followed by a coffee and catch-up, whilst arriving home in time for lunch! More details can be found at sussexnomads.org.uk. If anyone has cycled as a Prestonville Nomad previously, please contact Alan Limbrey at thesussexnomads@gmail.com.

Dorothy Stringer pupils are working towards an exciting rugby tourof South Africa. Please read and help where you can...

Dorothy Stringer Rugby Tour of South Africa At the end of last season, an evaluation of the standard of rugby at Dorothy Stringer took place and it was noted that the current crop of under 13/14 players were showing real signs of developing into quality sides. A decision was made to give them the ultimate test, touring Durban; South Africa in March 2015. Thanks to a very supportive parent, a meeting was set up which was open to all players from both age groups. At the meeting, an outline of the proposed tour was tabled to both players and parents. In the 10 day trip the players would experience - 3 rugby matches, 2 technical rugby sessions in conjunction with ‘The Sharks’ academy coaches Trips to Wet & Wild Park, St Lucia boat trip and the Natal Shark Board A Super 15 game A safari in Hluhluwe National Park After the evening, a thorough selection process took place and a squad of 24 players were identified that we believed to have the potential, commitment and work rate required of touring such a prestigious rugby playing country. We are currently 8 months into the preparation. We train as a squad 3 times a week. 2 technical sessions, developing individual and unit skills and then 1 session dedicated to strength & conditioning. All the players that have signed up to tour have had to commit to all 3 sessions each week and have started the long process of preparing themselves for what lies ahead. We have games scheduled throughout both seasons leading up to the tour which get progressively harder.

Getting the games right will mean that the squad is as best prepared as they can be for what they will come up against in South Africa. The games played to date have highlighted our strengths and areas for development and as a squad we are working hard to get everything ready for March 2015. We have 3 scheduled fund raising events A year to go sponsored cycle event - 29/03/2014 (this has already taken place and was a great success! We cycled the distance of South Africa - North to South 1600km) Race Night - 05/07/2014 Tour dinner - 25/10/2014 We are actively seeking company sponsorship and have different packages. If you are interested in sponsoring the tour please contact Grant Lawrence at LWR@dorothy-stringer.co.uk for more information.

BOOK REVIEW

The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold GENERAL BUILDING &

by Evelyn Waugh 01273 530977 / 07554750499

I became reacquainted with Waugh’s late comic masterpiece after discovering a copy whilst browsing in a second-hand bookshop in Camden Lock. Not being particularly impressed with any of the new fiction I’ve come across in www.lewisbyardplastering.co.uk the past few weeks, this seemed the perfect novel for this month’s column.

The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold, published in 1957, tells the story of insomnia-afflicted Gilbert, a successful novelist entering later middle-age. Along with his sleep problems, Gilbert suffers paranoid episodes and memory loss. In an attempt to restore his physical and mental health, he embarks on a cruise to the tropics, a cruise which proves to be a hell on earth. He finds himself plagued by aural hallucinations: barking dogs, jazz bands, revival meetings. Pinfold’s mental deterioration closely mirrors Waugh’s own mental instability, his ‘late lunacy’ as he dubbed it. He was advised to write the book by the head of the Psychiatry Department at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London. Interestingly the novel currently features on The Royal College of Psychiatrists’ website. Despite its rather difficult and gloomy subject matter, The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold is anything but, the comedy

is deftly handled and the writing shows Waugh at his best, even though we’re a long way from Brideshead Revisited or the mighty Sword of Honour trilogy. The combination of horror and humiliation which Pinfold suffers is at once tragic and comedic. Waugh’s light and perfect prose beautifully captures the disturbing and surreal world in which poor Pinfold finds himself. There’s a twist which is not too difficult to get and, if you do guess it, your enjoyment will be in no way impaired. The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold is a short novel which can be easily read in a single setting, the ideal way to consume it. The copy I recommend you purchase is the one published under the Penguin Classics imprint containing a fine introduction by Richard Jacobs. It’s not cheap at £12.99, but it’s the best edition of this fabulous novel that I’ve come across. Happy reading!

Fiveways Gardens... Mayto 2014 Welcome the

February edition of Fiveways Gardens

It’s Open House season, and I know, for a lot of us, that brings a great opportunity to go nosing in our neighbours’ houses. There’s often the opportunity to take a sneaky peak at folk’s gardens too, and I know, because I see a lot of them, that there’s inspiration to be found in the gardens. Most of us have very similar plots to deal with and there are some really clever solutions to common problems.

Don’t be afraid to simply copy a good idea. If you see a plant thriving in a shady area that you like but can’t identify, just ask. Most of us are flattered by this, not offended. If they don’t know, ask if you can take a photo, and take it along to your local nursery and hopefully they’ll be able to help. With the increasing interest in growing our own food, and maybe not so much money to go round, why not give it If you haven’t already, feed flowering bulbs – whether in a go this year? But what if you have no spare ground to plant into? Well, how about some carefully chosen nice flower or fading fast. The Fiveways Ar

The Fiveways Artists Group was set up in 1981 by artist ing during the Brighton Festival in the 80s, the whole no out Brighton and beyond. It's amazing to think that Ned's idea sparked off such an enormous Brighton phenomenon, and that he is still opening his house! The Fiveways area is unique in its number of resident artists living and working so closely together, and the sheer volume of contemporary art, crafts and photography available to the public during May is incredible. With such a strong sense of community here, it's hard not to feel proud of this massively creative area of Brighton. This year, continuing their developing partnership with artists from Normandy, there will be a number of visiting French artists showing in the houses, and in exchange a number of our Fiveways artists will be exhibiting in an arts event at La Linerie, Crosville sur Scie, on the third weekend of May. Last year the group wanted to redefine their identity within the area, which led to the idea of their own magazine: a more comprehensive Trail Companion for the local Open Houses which extended their connections within the local community. The group has always relied on art lovers and businesses to support them, and wanted to give something back. This year will see their second edition being published. So expect plenty of art, open gardens and workspaces, demonstrations, cake, bunting and tea. There are also two new houses in the group - Angela Evans (House No 5) and Nick Orsborn (House No 23) - so please pay them a visit, as well as J Kay Aplin's 'Ceramic House' which last

Fiveways Business... My First Word My First Word grows up is a friendly and happy pre-school environment that combines an underlying Montessori ethos with the Early Year Foundation stage curriculum based on learning through play. Discreetly tucked away in the grounds of St Matthias’ Church on Ditchling Road, Grows up...Brighton is a friendly and happy pre-school environment which follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum based on learning through play.

clude minimum level 3 childcare, plus Montessori level 4. Along with all the staff, the Montessori practitioner respects the unique individuality of each child and believes that children should be free to succeed and learn without criticism or restriction.

Inside you’ll find children engaged in various different, selfchosen activities. A quiet, cosy space is available for children to rest in. Child-sized basins and toilets allow the children to practise being independent.

We are one of the first pre-schools in the Fiveways area to offer flexibility to busy parents, without using “sessions”. Parents can pick and choose their own “core” hours to suit their families’ needs, being able to add extra hours as and when required.

Children have opportunities to develop life skills, such as caring for the garden - sweeping and watering; caring for each other - practising sharing and turn-taking; helping with daily duties - preparing snacks for others or serving water in child-sized glasses. During outdoor playtime the children are able to explore the wooded area, hunting for mini-beasts and noticing the effects of the changing seasons. A wooden playhouse supports children’s role-playing, often thinking of ideas to turn it into a toy shop or doctor’s surgery. The decked area helps children to practise safe scooting, where they can learn to judge space and negotiate with others. Our friendly and experienced staff provide a professional and warm welcome to both families and children. Qualifications in-

St Matthias – A Church For Fiveways 2014

It was interesting to see the article in the March Directory “New Church for Fiveways 1901” and the picture of the old “iron church” on the site where St Matthias Church now stands. The “new” building as we know it today was consecrated on 11th January 1912 where it has stood as a symbol of the Christian “worshipping heart of the Fiveways Community” for 102 years. Over those years times have changed, society has changed, interest in the Christian faith has waned to the point where many regard it as “irrelevant”. We live in an area where, according to the last census in 2011, Brighton is one of the least religious places in the U.K. so, I guess it is hardly surprising that we struggle to gain new members. However, the church is not a club, merely looking for new “members”. We at St Matthias are small in number these days compared to the large regular congregations of yesteryear. But, a small church is not a “failed church”. We are a “fellowship of believers”, meeting together, breaking bread and praising God – it is what we do! We believe that everyone of whatever creed, colour, sexual-

ity, of whatever faith, or no faith, is a beloved son or daughter of God. Particularly around this time of Easter we remember and rejoice in the fact that Christ died on the Cross for the “whosoever” and that means YOU, and “you” are always welcome to join with us at any or all of our Services, to be part of our fellowship, or to come for quiet moments of prayer, light a candle, or just sit and draw closer to God and experience his love and peace. We are there for you, the church, i.e. the people of God, as we have been for the past 102 years. We struggle to meet the present day financial demands placed upon us by the diocese, but Christ never said there was a membership fee to be part of his” family”. That family is here in the midst of the Fiveways Community bearing witness to ”the gospel way of life” and to serve you all in any way that we can and we welcome anyone and everyone, who for whatever reason care to visit us. God bless you all. Dave Brooks, Diocesan Lay Read, St Matthias Church Community, Fiveways Tel: 01273 507 326

Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.
