We are delighted to feature local illustrator Guy ParkerRees, who is best known for his illustrations for children’s bestseller “Giraffes Can’t Dance” and painted one of the Martlets Snailspace snails. We have an article from the local WI on a great scheme to help you avoid using plastic bags and Hannah from The Pet Shed has some helpful advice on travelling by car with your pet. There’s also information on a local community acupuncture service with affordable prices and Gary Mepsted has a very positive review of a new poetry book. Have a great month!

QUIZ QUESTION ONE:

Which ancestor of Noah is also the name of an oversized Champagne bottle that holds six litres?

fiveways Meet an award-winning illustrator...

FIVEWAYS FACE...GUY PARKER-REES How long have you lived in Fiveways? We moved from East London (along with half of Fiveways residents?) 16 years ago and haven’t looked back. I love Brighton. What is the work you are most proud of? Possibly a recent series of books I wrote and illustrated about Dylan, the stripy dog, and his friends. They are about looking at feelings and encouraging imaginative play. I wanted to show that there IS an alternative to looking at screens.

Guy Parker-Rees is an award-winning illustrator and writer who lives in Fiveways. He has illustrated many wellknown children’s books, including the best-seller “Giraffes Can’t Dance”, and he painted one of the snails on the Martlets Snailspace art trail.

But, of course, it also has to be “Giraffes Can’t Dance”, which turns 20 this year and continues to thrive all round the world.

What was it like being involved with Snailspace? I loved it, particularly getting to know the other artists when we were all painting the snails in a huge warehouse. There were sign writers, graffiti artists, mosaic makers, designers, illustrators and fine artists.

£115 per Student per Week Max 4 students per family £460 Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Evening Meal

Summer rates: Mid-June onwards £125.00 per student Max 4 students £500

It made me realise, there are so many pockets of interesting, creative things going on all over Brighton. Also it was great to meet all the people working at Martlets Hospice. They do such an amazing job. It’s a reminder to live in the moment and make the most of the life we have. What are you working on at the moment? I’m really enjoying working on a book about elephants. I’ve always been obsessed with elephants and it’s a wonderful story about being true to yourself. I am struggling with the fact that elephants tend to be a bit grey and I do like to use strong vibrant colours but there’s always a solution. There are worse problems to have.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I love oil painting, swimming and hunting for wild mushrooms. I’ve been a very keen mushroom forager for many years. There’s nothing better than snuffling around in a damp autumnal wood. For more information, visit guyparkerrees.com.

fiveways News of a new exhibition...

STEPHEN JONES HATS AT THE ROYAL PAVILION... Glamorous hats from one of the world’s top designers are now on show at the Royal Pavilion. Stephen Jones Hats at the Royal Pavilion sees the spectacular state rooms filled with exquisite hats created by master milliner Stephen Jones OBE. During his 40 year career, Jones has dressed the finest heads from across the globe – most recently the Duchess of Sussex, as well as Lady Gaga, Kate Moss and Mick Jagger. This new, site-specific exhibition shows hats worn by these celebrities and others, along with those made in collaboration with top fashion designers. “I grew up in a seaside town, but Brighton to me seemed exciting, exotic, and it symbolised art and freedom,” said Stephen. “In 2012, I designed a collection called ‘Chinoiserie-on-Sea’ for which I researched Brighton, and in particular the Pavilion, extensively; and it feels like showing my hats there is almost like a homecoming. I have never had the opportunity to display hats in the environment which inspired them.”

Dog lovers wanted: “Pleeease can I come to stay?”

While owners are away you will give their dogs love, exercise and companionship within your family home. If you are at home all day, have no children under the age of six, have no more than one dog of your own and would like to enjoy the companionship of guest dogs please get in touch.

QUESTION THREE:

Stephen Jones; photo by Tessa Hallmann

Highlights include: •

The opulent Banqueting Room hosts a ‘dinner’ for the hats of the most famous wearers including the Duchess of Sussex, Kylie Minogue and Missy Elliott.

Regal hats are on display including a series of crowns and a new felt hat for King George IV, a recreation of a hat worn by the monarch which appears in a portrait from 1783.

Food and feasting inspired hats are placed among the copper pots in the Great Kitchen.

Hats from Chinoiserie-on-Sea - Jones’ homage to the grandeur of the Royal Pavilion – including hats inspired by its famous domes are on display in the entrance hall.

There are gowns by Dior in the Music and Egyptian Rooms, mannequins dressed by Giles Deacon ascend the staircase wearing oversized headdresses, and a mannequin wearing a Thom Browne ensemble is on display in the King’s bedroom.

The exhibition runs until June 9 and is presented in partnership with Harvey Nichols. For more information visit: brightonmuseums.org.uk.

fiveways This article is by Preston Village Women’s Institute...

TARGETING PLASTIC WASTE AT A LOCAL LEVEL... Preston Village Women’s Institute are making and giving away ‘Morsbags’; these are handmade shoppers from recycled/scrap material, resulting in a completely unique bag. These are then given away for free instead of plastic bags. Morsbags is a worldwide initiative that we, as a WI, have joined; 307,329 have now been handmade and distributed worldwide (as of Feb 2019). This is a positive way to reduce the hideous number of plastic bags being used and to keep textile waste out of landfill - 1 million plastic bags are consumed per minute globally - of which hundreds of thousands end up in the oceans. Instructions • Take home and place in a handy spot. • Take out when you are shopping for anything - from pants to potatoes. • Then keep using it instead of pesky plastic bags. • Tell your friends that you are helping the planet. • Tell them they need a Morsbag too.

Providing a plastic free shopping environment in Fiveways. In Store, we have a wide range of dry food, household essentials, toiletries and bodycare. Simply bring along your containers and refill. A convenient way to cut down on wasteful and unnecessary packaging. Many products are locally sourced, supporting the many wonderful makers in Sussex.

Opening Hours 9.00-5.30 Monday to Friday 10-5.30 Saturday Sunday closed.

Can you sew? Go to www.morsbags.com to download the free pattern and make Morsbags from old curtains, duvet covers, tablecloths etc. The idea is to get together with people in your local community, eat cake and make reusable Morsbags and then give them away for free. We have recently donated the bags to Fiveways Fruits, the Co-op, Store and Wigwam Toys. (There are even smaller sized shoppers so children can start learning about saving our planet too.) If you have any fabric that we could use to make more bags we are happy to collect it from you, or we hope you may want to make your own. Each year nationally the Women’s Institute campaign for something they collectively believe in, anything from plastic pollution, mental health issues and saving bees. Preston Village WI is your local Fiveways group; we meet at the City Gate centre in the Dip, Hollingdean Terrace, on the 4th Thursday of every month, 7.309pm. We welcome new members; you can come along and try before you join too! You can find us on Facebook or at www.thewi.org.uk, or email mrssfitzpatrick@googlemail.com

LEWIS BYARD

Christmas Carols 2018 Our thanks to Keith McMurray and his Magic Band for what seemed like the best ever carols in the park event last December. A special thank you to everyone who supported the impromptu collection for Spike’s Fund organised by Jamie, Sarah and their team at the Cleveland Arms, who also kindly provided sausage rolls and mulled wine. Thank you to everyone who came along. Spike, a 17 year old local boy, was involved in a serious road accident on Preston Drove late last year, suffering severe injury. A crowdfund has been set up to support his ongoing rehabilitation. Any donation, however small, will be gratefully received. www.gofundme.com/our-lovely-spike

our trees Some of the trees in Blakers Park have stood since the 1800’s and all of them, old and new, provide colour, texture, shade and play a vital part in making the park such a wonderful place. noise & nuisance issues We have been made aware that on occasion there have been a number of noisy gatherings in Blakers Park late into the night. As a voluntary community group, the Friends of Blakers Park has no authority over these issues. We do feel strongly about representing any issues within our community and have contacted the Council. They have advised that any local residents concerned about noise or antisocial behaviour can take the following actions to help prioritise an appropriate response from the authorities: 1. Call Brighton & Hove City Council’s Community Safety Casework team, 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, on 01273 292735 or email them at: communitysafety.casework@brighton-hove.gcsx. gov.uk 2. If noise is the issue, call Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environmental Health team on 01273 294266, or email them at: ehl.environmentalprotection@brighton-hove. gov.uk 3. Call 101 to report anti social behaviour to Sussex Police or email them at 101@sussex.pnn. police.uk with exact times and details. We suggest that anyone living near the park takes one or more of these actions. The more reports that are received, the more likely there will be positive interventions.

nice & tidy

Blakers Park is generally very well kept and we want to thank everyone who uses the litter bins or takes their litter home. Volunteer members of the Brighton & Hove City ‘Tidy Up Team’ continue to make a big difference in helping to keep the park litter free. If you are interested in this project email cityparks.volunteers@brighton-hove.gov.uk or call 01273 292929.

fiveways Local personal trainer Liz Fulford gets a new client ready for a half marathon...

MONTH FIVE

TRAINING FOR A HALF MARATHON

To set the scene it was over 10 years ago when a new local personal trainer contacted us at the Fiveways Directory wanting to promote her fledging business. What transpired was a series of articles culminating in the editor running the New Forest Half Marathon. Now 10 years on the challenge is whether the same can be done again with no running since and another 10 years on the clock!! It’s been a challenging time for Tim who is suffering from an injury which is currently preventing him from running and therefore achieving his set goal. However, this month we have focused on an alternative form 23 of exercise, cycling and strength training. As an alternative to running, cross training such as cycling or swimming has so many benefits; it can improve fitness, promote recovery, rehabilitate injuries and most of all keep you focused and motivated during a break from training. Running injuries are most often caused by inadequate recovery time between runs, biomechanical regularities (which Tim is suffering from), muscular imbalances and poor footwear. Cycling and swimming will give ankles, knees and lower back a rest from the repetitive impact of running and protect your most vulnerable joints, muscles and connective tissues. When injured and doing an alternative form of exercise, workouts should match your intended runs in intensity and duration. The majority of Tim’s training runs for the next two months would have been long, slow and steady

Liz Fulford Personal Trainer For all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels

07782 264066 www.fulfordfitness.co.uk

Tim’s body fat index

to improve his aerobic fitness, strengthen his muscles and his ligaments and tendon. He will instead replicate this on his bike. These workouts will increase his aerobic energy system which breaks down carbohydrate and fat with oxygen, producing energy to fuel the muscles. Tim will also be doing ‘interval’ training on his bike, i.e. cycling for set periods at his hardest pace, alternated with an easier/steady pace. Interval training is used to develop aerobic capacity and as a consequence, he will be increasing his body’s capacity to take in oxygen, get oxygenated blood to his muscles and utilise more of the muscle fibres that work quickly (‘fast twitch fibres’). We have been developing his aerobic capacity in order to allow him to use this energy system for longer. When exercise intensity reaches a certain point, such as running/cycling up a hill, the anaerobic or lactic acid energy system is utilized to provide the required muscle fuel. The waste product of this energy system is lactic acid which causes muscle ‘burn’ and is less efficient and uses more glycogen (the stored form of carbohydrate). The higher the aerobic fitness, the greater the exercise intensity that can be sustained without fatigue (i.e. one can run faster for longer). Thus Tim is improving his strength and endurance – all factors that will help him with his training when he resumes running again. fiveways directory March 2019

STANFORD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH LUNCH CLUB We are a small friendly group of over-60s who meet in the church hall on Wednesday with a break at Easter, Christmas and during the school holidays.

25

We aim to provide a fresh, healthy meal in a welcoming and safe environment and hope to encourage caring friendships between our members. New members are always welcome. The church hall has disabled access and an accessible toilet. The meals are cooked by three groups of volunteers who have to take a food safety and hygiene course every three years but we would welcome any local people, including those with a disability, who would like to volunteer to cook with us every three weeks or only occasionally. In the summer we organise a coach trip with lunch for a small charge and subsidised by any profit made during the year, and at Christmas we have a meal and party which is free to members. We charge only ÂŁ3.50 for a two course freshly cooked meal and a cup of tea and will cater for any special diets and intolerances. Favourite meals are stew and dumplings, meat pie or chicken casserole, with delicious puddings of lemon

sponge with custard, lemon meringue pie or maybe fruit crumble and custard. We welcome new members regardless of faith or none and would be very pleased to hear from you so please telephone Christine on 01273 500871, if you would like to join us. Which actor portrayed Samuel Johnson, writer of the first dictionary, in Blackadder the Third?

fiveways Our book review from Gary Mepsted...

SCHIST BY KAREN SMITH

SMITH/DOORSTOP, PAPERBACK, £7.50 I should, perhaps, set this month’s book in some kind of context. The story begins back in 2014 on the first evening of my latest Creative Writing course. One student declares herself to be a poet and immediately part of my soul dies. I’m old enough to have read, and studied, a great deal of poetry and, not to mince words, the bulk of it has been drivel; hence I always approach poetry with a wariness born of bitter experience. Imagine, then, my delight, and incredulity, when the first poem the class looked at was something 27 quite extraordinary. It was raw in places and needed a little editorial input to make it fly, but it was an order of magnitude better than any poem I could remember reading in the recent past. Cut to 2019 when an unexpected package arrives for me at the organisation where I teach. I’m bewildered and intrigued, and when I open it and see the slim volume within, tears do genuinely appear. Schist by Karen Smith, the poem the class were privileged to read and discuss that evening, carries the title for the first volume of her work, and what a superlative collection this is: adroit, sinewy, sensual, with huge emotional heft, and an astonishing maturity, and acuity, for a writer at the beginning of her career. For me, dispiritingly, perhaps, Schist points up the banality, the sheer drabness, of so much modern poetry. Probably the last time I was this excited about a debut volume of verse was Craig Raine’s The Onion, Memory, and that came out in 1978. Other debuts have been almost as exhilarating: Christopher Reid’s Arcadia (1979), and Oliver Reynolds’ Skevington’s Daughter (1985). I can’t think of a more contemporary collection, debut or otherwise, that has thrilled me as much as Schist. The poems beautifully combine the glacial elements of science with a hot, dense emotionality which produces lines, and images, of true beauty.

The puckish delight in deploying language, and the surgical precision with which she does so, marks Karen Smith out as a poet to be reckoned with. Schist scares me. I’ve been returning to it cautiously, fearful that I’ve overpraised it, that my memory, that potent trickster, is deceiving me; that the reality of the poetry will disappoint. Not a bit of it. The poems flare and burn with the same intensity upon each reading. What more could anyone ask for? Buy it. Gary Mepsted

fiveways Hannah from the Pet Shed gives her advice for pet owners...

PET PROBLEM CORNER... Welcome to our feature helping pet owners around the Fiveways area with advice. We love to go out and about with our dogs but did you know that there are rules around transporting our pets that can also affect our insurance? What is the safest and legal way to transport my pet in my car? Rule 57 of the Highway Code states: “When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.” 29 Breaking the Highway Code doesn’t carry a direct penalty, but drivers can be pulled over for driving without due care and attention. This can also result in a fine (up to £2,500) and up to 9 penalty points - and if an unrestrained pet has caused an accident, insurers are unlikely to pay out. Things to remember when driving with pets: • Don’t let your dog ride with its head hanging out of the window. As fun as it may look, it’s potentially dangerous and can cause injury. •

Attree & Kent Funeral Directors

Because every life is unique 2 Hollingbury Place, Brighton BN1 7GE 01273 542 454 www.cpjfield.co.uk

Always ensure cats are safely and securely restrained in a cat carrier. • Always carry a water bottle in case your pet overheats and needs to be rapidly cooled in an emergency. Five litres would be enough for an average dog and use sun shades when it is hot or the sun is bright and never leave a pet in a hot car. • Don’t feed your pet within two hours of starting a long car journey to avoid car sickness. If your pet does suffer from sickness consider giving them a herbal remedy such as Dorwest Herbs Valerian Compound before you set out. • Pack a favourite toy or blanket to give your pet a sense of familiarity. Hannah is the current proud pet parent of 14 including her dog (Bourbon, a regular at her shop), three cats, Starsky the tortoise, two snakes, turkeys, chickens and guinea pigs. Have a pet related question? Drop a line to Hannah at thepetshed1@gmail.com or pop in and see her at The Pet Shed, 100 Preston Drove, BN1 6EW. fiveways directory March 2019

fiveways Affordable acupuncture at Hollingdean Community Centre...

BRIGHTON COMMUNITY ACUPUNCTURE Affordable acupuncture The vision of Brighton Community Acupuncture (BCA) is to make acupuncture affordable and accessible to all, with treatments from £15 to £35. As well as slashing our profit margin, this is made possible by treating patients in a large community space with partitions so that one to three persons can be treated in overlapping appointments, which is standard practice in China. In the UK, acupuncture is typically one patient at a time costing £40 to £60 a session, which excludes many people. 31

How acupuncture works According to Chinese medicine, our health is dependent on our vital life force, known as Qi. If the Qi is plentiful and its circulation in its channels is smooth and balanced, all is well. If however its flow is deficient, disturbed or blocked then illness may result. This can occur due to a wide range of factors including chronic emotional stress, poor nutrition, lifestyle, hereditary factors, infections or trauma. Acupuncture works by activating our innate healing resources to restore the natural balance of our Qi through the insertion of ultra-fine needles into specific points along the channel ‘network of animation’.

Should the need arise to use points elsewhere, such as your back or abdomen, blankets are used to keep you warm and covered up. It takes around half an hour for the needles to work. Once inserted the practitioner is free to treat someone else, although you are checked on to ensure all is well. During this time you are left to benefit from the deeply relaxing effect of the needles. How many treatments does one need? Acupuncture requires several sessions to work. Most people experience a significant and lasting improvement in their symptoms after six to ten sessions. Serious What can acupuncture treat? or stubborn illnesses may require longer. www.trustedandlocal.co.uk AT successfully quoted for our garage conversion and kitchen refurb. Fred and his team were very competent and friendly. The quotation supplied was worked to with any extras explained. We were having both a garage conversion and new kitchen and they were able to work round us so that we had a useable kitchen for almost the whole project. The specialists they used were also competent and helpful. Work was done at the times that they said and Fred was always available to discuss any issues that arose. Stage payments were timetabled at the beginning of the work to avoid any nasty surprises. We were very happy with the standard of the work done. And would be happy to recommend the company for work similar to ours. Review of AT Construction by local resident

A real pleasure doing business with this company. Without exception every one of the team was friendly, helpful and professional. The standard of workmanship is outstanding, and my new doors are beautiful! Review of Countryman Improvements by local resident

Liam did a great job with the windows in our terraced house. All of them had broken sashes, damaged frames and rotting wood, and Liam's work was quick, high quality, and he was considerate of our son's asthma when it came to tidying. Top work. Review of Sashes & Sills by local resident
