fiveways TOUR DE FRANCE VISITS FIVEWAYS This great photo was taken by Leslie Whitcomb and is of the Tour de France when it came to Brighton on 6 July 1994. It was kindly sent to us by his son Peter who still lives locally. The cyclists are passing the Stanmer Park Tavern, now the Fiveways pub, in Ditchling Road, on the 4th stage of the tour, which began in Dover, marking the opening of the Channel Tunnel two months earlier. The route included Ditchling Beacon and Elm Grove, and ended in a sprint finish on Madeira Drive.

What about complete protein? Isn’t meat better as it’s got all the amino acids? No. Your body’s too smart to be reliant Lewis Hamilton eats a on a food that’s lightning fast plant-based diet or dangerous and certainly isn’t crazy about being your supper. You can get all the amino acids you need from plants and your body will shuffle them around into the correct order.
You guessed it. They only eat plants; and get all their protein from plants. Can we do the same? Answer: yes. How much protein do we need? First off, we do need protein. Without it we pretty much fall to bits. It contains the building blocks of our bodies. How much? The World Health Organisation says 10% of calories from protein is adequate. You’ll get 10% on a spread of plant food without even trying. Quiz again: We grow most rapidly when on mum’s milk. So how much protein does this rapid-growth superfood contain? Answer: 5-6%. Just because some is essential, more isn’t necessarily better.
In fact, if you eat sufficient calories on a plant-based diet, it’s all but impossible to be protein deficient (don’t forget the B12 tablet if you go all the way). FIVEWAYS FACE...REV DAN WOODHOUSE Rev Dan Woodhouse has recently begun his new role as minister at Stanford Avenue Methodist Church, who share him with Patcham Methodist Church and Sussex University. How does Stanford Avenue differ from your previous churches in Leeds? The accents are very different! Otherwise, each church has its own personality and quirks depending on history and the people who attend. I’m yet to fully work Stanford Avenue out. However, they are very kind and encouraging which thankfully is not a change from Leeds. Are you planning any changes at the church? 13 Not as such, I think it’s important for ministers to work alongside communities with what they are already doing. I will bring my own thoughts and personality as we go which may bring some change naturally. My priorities are, in a country that tends to see lots of isolation, to help people form closer more supportive friendships. What events are you planning for Christmas at Stanford Avenue? There’s lots happening at Stanford Avenue over Christmas, too much to list. However, I’m most looking forward to Midnight Mass at 11.15pm on Christmas Eve. FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FIVEWAYS GENERATIONS... Strictly, between you and me, there is an open secret that hundreds of Fiveways families have been enjoying and not just on Saturday nights. Yes, it’s dance - the kind that Darcey Bussell performed. She began her love of ballet at a tender age, just like local children at our neighbourhood ballet classes. Dance is something that most kids enjoy doing and it can be a great way to keep active and fit, as well as encouraging their creativity. I have been going to a local ballet class every week for many years at Beacon Arts in Knoyle Road, following on from taking my two daughters there, to be taught by the same teacher, Jane Worsley. Jane has been teaching children of all ages, from three upwards, since 1991 when she took over from Elizabeth Nelson, keeping in the tradition of teaching the Cecchetti method of ballet. Generations of local children have trained with Jane, taking Cecchetti exams and awards, including the Classical

Ballet Awards at Sadler’s Wells. The careful and supportive classes have encouraged young dancers to enter choreographic competitions each year in London. Afterwards they have reprised their own performances back in Brighton for friends and family to see. Happily, there aren’t any harsh judges playing to the cameras! Many of her pupils have gone on to professional training and some have even continued into professional dance careers. Classes with Jane are all about enjoyment and developing artistic potential. The very young children start with simple activities such as skipping and singing round the piano as well as the first steps in ballet. Musicality is very important which is why Jane’s classes are always accompanied by a live pianist. This is very rare and special in these days when pre-recorded music is everywhere. This means that the music is dynamic, going with the flow and energy of the lesson. The live piano accompaniment is also inspirational and the pianist has been able to help children with their choreography by improvising with them and then composing music for their individual pieces. The wonderful pianists are a vital part of the whole experience of Jane Worsley’s classes at Beacon Arts. The public have voted year after year for these classes, children and adults alike. ELECTION CANDIDATES WI members Joy, Jan, Pat and myself based ourselves outside the Co-op; we chatted to people, gave them flowers, plants and home-made biscuits. We also hid chocolate bars for people to find at the crossings, paid for a couple of coffees and asked the barista to choose who to give a free coffee to, donated some items to RISE women’s refuge and the Whitehawk Foodbank. NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING POINTS More than 200 new electric vehicle charging points are set to be installed across the city over the next few months. Following a tender process, the council has appointed Electric Blue to install and maintain the electric vehicle charge points. The project is being funded with £300,000 from the Office of Low Emissions, and £100,000 from Electric Blue. The 207 new points will include 30 in areas with high parking demand where 29 the council are proposing mandatory Electric Charging spaces, many of them in response to requests from residents who own or are thinking of buying electric vehicles but have no off-street parking available. Lamp post chargers: Most of the charging points will be installed on lamp posts and will provide a full charge for vehicles parked overnight. These will be installed by January next year. A mobile phone app showing the locations of all points in the city and whether they are in use will be available to download. Drivers will pay 28p per kilowatt hour to charge their vehicles at the public points. Fast chargers: Fast chargers, taking around five hours, which are already installed in the city centre, will be integrated into the new app. The council will consider installing further fast chargers outside the city centre if there is a clear demand from residents. All the public charge points will be powered by renewable energy. The council has also been awarded £86,265 research funding from Innovate UK for a trial of smart network extenders, which increase the number of vehicles which can be charged at each point.

NEW SEAFRONT BINS More than 100 new bins have been installed along the seafront in the hope more people will recycle plastic bottles, cans and glass. The bins have three separate sections in different colours to help people recycle more easily - Brighton Borough blue for plastic bottles and cans and Hove Borough maroon for glass. The third section is black for ordinary rubbish. The new bins should not be used for barbecue materials as these can create a fire hazard.

Brighton Lions Club are once again launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions. Excess winter deaths in Brighton & Hove are slightly higher than both England and the South-East. People in difficulty will be contacting agencies such as Age UK who will refer them to Brighton Lions. Direct applications will not be accepted to ensure all the donated money goes to the people who really need it. Brighton Lions will make payments direct to the energy supply companies, not the individual beneficiaries. Donations can be made by credit/debit cards through Brighton Lions Club’s website at www. brightonlions.org.uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Wenceslas should be sent to Brighton Lions Club, c/o 9 Westfield Crescent, Brighton, BN1 8JB. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%.
Get ready for a night on the dark side in Preston Manor, Brighton’s most haunted house, on Sunday 29th December. Apparitions are commonplace in the manor and, as the evening unfolds, journey through eerie corridors to haunted locations and relive the experiences of those who have encountered the resident ghosts. End the night by taking part in a Victorian-style séance with a medium. The event is aimed at everyone from sceptics to believers and is an open-minded presentation of historical ghost tales left31 as a legacy from the family who lived at Preston Manor when it was still a private house (pre 1933) as well as more recent experiences of staff and visitors. Guests will be taken to parts of the building not usually open to the public and the accounts told are from historical records going back to the 1880s. The event is aimed at adults and will end with a chance to ask questions. Sunday 29 December 4.30–7pm & 7.30-10pm, £35, book in advance (includes a glass of wine)
