NEW BUSINESS

5

Welcome to Fiveways, Sean, Marion and the crew of the Hop & Vine...

Looking Fine – The Hop & Vine It won’t have escaped your notice that, following some frenzied building activity, The Hop & Vine, located right on Fiveways junction, is open for business. Despite being the new boy on the block, it has already garnered critical acclaim in the press including being one of only two eateries in Brighton to make it onto the Guardian’s ’10 best craft beer pubs in Brighton’! Aimed squarely at the Fiveways community, this new gastro wine bar aims to provide fine wines, interesting and varied beers, and a range of lunch and evening menus, specials and nibbles. Opened by Sean (manager at the hugely successful Hanover pub, barista, sommelier and self-confessed beer buff) and his wife Marion (a Parisian on a mission to bring the best of French café culture to the UK’s most cosmopolitan city), The Hop & Vine is the culmination of years spent saving, planning and dreaming to realise their vision of the ultimate wining, dining and socialising experience. “We only ever wanted a ‘local’ establishment – we could have chosen sites much more likely to bring in seasonal or weekend party crowds, but we felt we needed a place where everyone grew to know us and where we

knew our patrons intimately. We wanted them to influence what we served at the bar, what we cooked, what they wanted our wine bar to be.” Marion is clearly passionate about family and the community they’ve chosen as their location – “We want to have cocktail nights and wine-tastings, of course - we are adults and we want to relax and enjoy the fine things - but what is better in life than having a coffee or Prosecco with your friends on a sunny afternoon while the children colour in or play with cars under a table?” There is space for all this, and more, now their vision for a social hub in Fiveways is realised. Nowhere is this ideal more apparent than in their aspirations for the first floor of the bar, in which they hope to attract local community groups and meetings such as PTAs, reading, art and discussion groups, as well as ‘hot desk’ workers wishing to get out of the house for a few hours without having to travel into town for the privilege. “We want The Hop & Vine to provide a ‘space’ for Fiveways, space to meet or to be alone, to work or to play.” It sounds like Sean and Marion have the recipe for a fantastic addition to the Fiveways community – just add locals! LCOAL PERSON

9 As we know Fiveways is full of talented, able people and we love to feature them in The Fiveways Directory! This month Rosie meets local author Bethan Roberts...

60 Minutes with Bethan Roberts It’s the morning after the launch party of her new book, and local author Bethan Roberts confesses to being a little fatigued (not that you’d know it from looking at her; she’s fresh-faced, smiley and impeccably dressed. I like her instantly). When she presents me with a hardback copy of Mother Island I’m so thrilled I almost crack the spine and begin reading on the spot. Remembering my manners, and the point of our meeting, we begin to discuss her source of inspiration. The story is set in isolated Anglesey, a ruggedly beautiful island where Roberts spent time as a child, but rather than focusing on the island’s history, this story observes a more contemporary, domestic issue. “When I started writing it I’d had a baby about a year earlier and I didn’t have time for the research a historical novel requires, so I decided to bite the bullet and write about what I knew: babies. I’d employed a part time childminder and I started considering what it was like to be a nanny, to love those children and every night give them back.” Pondering this whilst navigating her own fears as a mother lead her to write an utterly engaging tale which explores a darker side to childcare, and deals with what happens if the nanny doesn’t give the baby back. “The experience of putting yourself in someone else’s shoes is really what writing novels is about,” explains Roberts, as we discuss the main character, Maggie, who abducts two-year-old Samuel from his family in a misguided quest to rebuild her shattered life. Through opposing character perspectives, the novel dives into the fragile dynamics between parent and childminder; a delicate balance of authority, understanding, power and - most crucially - trust. With Mother Island firmly on store bookshelves, Roberts must shift her focus to her next creation. But she says she’s unlikely to complete anything in local coffee shops, joking that whilst she loves “feeling connected” to the

area and having a sense of belonging, bumping into friends and neighbours is a slippery slope towards every writer’s worst enemy: procrastination. Full of endearing modesty, Roberts leaves me with a list of “must-reads” by other authors, including her recent favourite, The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, hailing it a “wonderful” and “generous” book. But it’s Mother Island I’m most keen to devour, and moments after her departure I’m immersed in the first chapter. Perhaps it’s her ability to tackle uncomfortable subjects with effortless empathy, or the suspense she generates from page one, but for the next hour I’m unable to answer the phone or do anything besides let my imagination wander to that mysterious island and all the secrets it promises to reveal. www.barefootblissblog.wordpress.com

RECIPE

11 The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs...

Seeded Cheese and Rosemary scones I have gone savoury this month with delicious cheese scones flavoured with fresh rosemary and topped with whipped cream cheese and caramelised onions. Ingredients for caramelised onions: 1 large onion, finely sliced 2 teaspoons brown sugar 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar 2 teaspoons butter Dash of sunflower oil Pinch of chilli powder 1 crushed clove of garlic Ingredients for scones: 60g butter 250g self raising flour 2 level teaspoons baking powder

ened and darkened. Add a splash of water if the onions get too thick. Leave to cool.

sprinkle some mixed seeds on top.

1 teaspoon mustard

• Heat the oven to 220C/200C for a fan oven.

• Bake for approximately 10 minutes until a pale golden colour. Cool on a wire rack.

125g grated cheddar

• To make the scones, place the flour and baking powder into a bowl. Rub in the room temperature butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs; add 100g of the grated cheese.

• To serve, whip the cream cheese with a dash of milk and a few fresh herbs. Halve the scones and spread with the cream cheese and top with the caramelised onions.

• Crack the egg into a measuring jug with the mustard, salt and pepper, and top up to 150ml with milk. Beat and add to the flour mix, stirring with a knife to form a soft dough.

These scones are so quick and easy to make and are best served fresh on the day you make them. They make a great alternative to sandwiches for a summer picnic or are perfect as a savoury cream tea in the garden.

1 egg Approx 130ml milk

1 large sprig of fresh rosemary, finely chopped Optional sprinkle of mixed seeds to decorate Cream cheese topping: 200g cream cheese Dash of milk Chopped fresh herbs, optional

Method: • To make the caramelised onions, finely slice the onion and place in a small saucepan with the crushed garlic, butter and sunflower oil. Cook over a low heat until the onions are soft. • Turn the heat up, add the brown sugar and chilli powder to the onions, stirring over the heat until the onions darken and caramelise. Add the red wine vinegar, turn the heat down and simmer until the onions have thick-

• Turn out onto a floured surface and lightly knead the dough until smooth. • Roll the dough out to 1½cm thick and cut out rounds using a pastry cutter dipped in flour (to stop the dough sticking to the cutter), rerolling any spare dough. • Place on a baking tray lined with non-stick baking paper. Brush the top of the scones with milk, top with the remaining grated cheese and

LOCAL BUSINESS An update from local beautician and owner of New Dawn in Havelock Road, Dawn Plimmer...

Lipofirm plus goes from strength to strength I am absolutely thrilled to see that the Lipofirm Plus and Lipolift Pro have received some glowing reviews from the press with more exciting news to follow. In March both brands were featured and reviewed in The Sun newspaper and OK magazine. There is more to come with a TV review set to be released soon – watch this space!! The success of the award-winning Lipofirm Plus since purchasing the equipment 24 months ago has far exceeded my expectations. The demand for this treatment demonstrates that Lipofirm Plus has proved popular for inch loss, body contouring, and facial and body skin tightening. With Lipofirm Plus technology having two medical certifications it has also become a favourite with the medical profession, with many installations carried out with GPs and nurses. The launch of the Lipolift Pro, the only bioactive contouring wrap of its kind, has also been a tremendous success, both as a stand-alone treatment or a product that can be used in conjunction with the Lipofirm Plus. By using both Lipofirm Plus and Lipolift together, it provides an alternative or a complete body treatment in a shorter period without overloading the liver. Dawn Plimmer New Dawn. We met for tea (and flapjacks) at Tilt on Preston Drove and I began by asking Lizzie how she arrived at the subject for her new novel, whether or not to inoculate your children with the MMR vaccine, and the consequences of your decision. Brighton is a city where so many people haven’t had their children vaccinated and it’s one of those playground issues which you don’t feel comfortable discussing, like religion or politics. I was, at the time, going through various ideas which were similar to my two previous books and I put this out as a throw-away idea, telling my then editor that it would probably mean I’d end up falling out with everyone I knew. She said to me, "That’s the one you should write." Once I started thinking about the material and the characters, I realised it wasn’t just an issue novel. Illness and disability are a very useful metaphor.

elcome to the bruary edition of veways Gardens I had to start again and I quickly rewrote the first third while it was still in my head. My editor wasn’t 100% certain and I was aware that it needed to be published quickly as there was a measles outbreak at the time and so the novel was particularly topical. I’d met my new publisher, Myriad, at various publishing events and so I showed the manuscript to them and they gave me a contract based on the first third of the book. I’m very happy to be with Myriad. Since the break-in I’ve got a Dropbox account and I email my work to myself! Definitely good advice for any writer.

things that holds people back is fear of putting too much of themselves into their work. People also need to shake off the formal style of writing they learned at school or at university. The thing is, you have to really want to do it. It’s like a demonic obsession. Finally, I asked Lizzie if there was a novel she’d read that she wished she’d written. She opted for three. Her choices were, ‘The Remains of the Day’ and ‘Never Let Me Go’, both by Kazuo Ishiguro, and ‘The End of the Affair’ by Graham Greene. You displayed truly impeccable taste, Ms Enfield. Lizzie Enfield’s new novel, ‘Living With It’, is out now. Myriad Editions, £7.99.

GARDENS

17 17

Brought to you each month by gardening expert Lisa Attwell...

Fiveways Gardens... August 2014 Climbing and rambling roses are incredibly vigorous plants, and need managing to get the best out of them, so prune now. If not, you’ll find that they’ll become bare at the bottom with all the glorious flowers so high you can’t really enjoy them. Same goes for most climbing honeysuckles and jasmines too, and remember to tie young shoots in nice and low to create the best screen. Some of you have fantastic wisterias in your front gardens, that we all get to enjoy – thank you. Now’s the time to prune these too, although I heard from clients this year that some don’t get pruned at all and seem to thrive... Hey ho. As soon as they’ve finished flowering, trim lavenders, rosemary and spring/summer flowering hebes. If not, they get leggy and woody and there’s no getting back to the nice compact mound shapes. Cut back hard, about 2-3cm into the green growth, not back into the brown woody stems. Next year, you’ll have bushy, healthy plants that don’t need digging out and replacing – there, a money-saving tip in these hard times. There are some useful pruning videos on the likes of YouTube, for those of you not quite sure what you should be doing. This might be particularly useful for my next topic – fruit. August is the time to prune trained pears and apples, eg espaliers and cordons. In essence, this is what to do: •

Check for side shoots over 22cm long, which grew earlier in summer directly from the main stem, and cut them back to three leaves. Those stems that grew from existing side shoots or spurs can be pruned harder, to just one leaf beyond the cluster of leaves at the base of that stem.

Leave shoots less than 15cm long until mid-September and then shorten to one leaf beyond the cluster of leaves at the base.

Prune growth that forms after summer pruning in September (or October if pruning later).

Lawns are looking a bit on the brown side, but don’t worry about it, as they’ll soon bounce back with a bit of rain. If it’s just too hot still to do any actual gardening, why not get ahead of the game and think about the bulbs you want to order for autumn planting? Get yourself sorted quickly, as the super-organised people snap up all the best varieties. Also, the bulbs will arrive in better condition and therefore are more likely to flower better (or at all…) Autumn and winter flowering crocus and cyclamens can be planted now to flower in just a few months. Daffs planted nice and early also make better plants, because they have that much longer to establish a decent root system, to support more flowers. Take it easy and enjoy your garden. Lisa

LOCAL EVENT

19 It’s getting closer...the annual Hollingbury Park Avenue street party . Stick it in the diary...

Hollingbury Park Avenue Street Party

Saturday 6th September, 2pm – 9pm

Excitement is certainly mounting in and around the Fiveways area as the return of the HPA annual street party looms ever closer. As has become a great local tradition, we mark the end of the summer holiday period in style. Regulars will remember the themes from recent years whether it be: SPACE, Circus or 2nd World War. Well, this year’s promises more of the same – with the intriguing theme of ‘Pirate, Parrots and the Deep Blue Sea’ – so, from Captain Pugwash to the Little Mermaid, we expect the Avenue to be awash with local residents in fancy dress.

promising aerial rings, sword fighting and fire juggling. More important of course is the opportunity to mix as a community, drink fine local ales and eat great food supplied locally and cooked by the committee. The road will be closed from noon whereupon it will be transformed into a safe communal space – so please come up, mingle, chat and contribute your ideas for next year.

Grateful as ever to the support from Brighton and Hove City Council, we will be putting on a range of activities to suit all ages: children’s activities will include ‘the big make’ and a variety of games, older (but still youthful) residents will be performing in bands throughout the afternoon, stalls, tombola, raffles and treasure hunts.

Sadly Dolly Parton has returned to the US, so the evening will draw to a close with the ever popular Moves Afoot gallantly trying to marshal the shambolic partygoers into some form of ordered dancing.

Back by popular demand is the HPA Pop Up Choir – members welcome with rehearsals booked all summer. Check out the Facebook page (Hollingbury Park Avenue – HPA Street Party) for regular updates.

The event is entirely organised by local residents and we always welcome offers of help or interest in running a stall. The more help we get, the more we can lay on. So again check out: Facebook Hollingbury Park Avenue – HPA Street Party.

Shambolic will perform a piratically themed circus show –

Keith of local lo-fi rockers Les Cactus & the Rumpy Pumpkins offers his monthly musical recommendations...

Les Cactus Recommends...

Memphis in June by Nina Simone, 1961

My most enjoyable live music experiences have tended to be at gigs where I can jump about ludicrously by the front of the stage alongside a load of fellow ‘dancers’. For some reason I’ve often found getting exhaustedly drenched with sweat and overpriced plastic-beakered lager, having my shoes written off from stamping feet and having my face periodically elbowed from others’ animated limbs to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience. However, as I approach 40 I’ve been receiving signs making me wonder if I’m not getting too old for it all, most recently after seeing garage-psych-punk-rock titans Thee Oh Sees in London with my old friend Jonny Voss. Jonny has always been partial to the delights of a good mosh-pit and has been a long-standing connoisseur of the Thrash, Death and Speed Metal music genres. He’s also by far the most athletic, energetic person I’ve ever known: as a teenager he used to think nothing of swimming a few hundred lengths before a couple of hours’ cycling in the morning to warm himself up for an afternoon of further strenuous physical activities. Even now as a parent of two young children, he seems to have brain cells that actually still work after the continuous sleep deprivation. What better companion for such a high-energy concert?

Alas, while I was getting knocked about among the barrage of animated bodies near the front of the stage, he spent the whole time stood still against a wall saying afterwards he was “too old for all of that”. When The Bionic Man tells you something like this, the writing seems unavoidably on the wall for mere mortals like me. Thankfully, one doesn’t always have to be jumping around to receive transcendent live music experiences. Seeing Nina Simone at the Royal Festival Hall a few years ago was a much less energetic affair, and was one of the best things I’ve ever seen. After each song she got up from the piano and stared at us all from the front of the stage, stock still and with a completely blank expression. It was both magnificent and bizarre.

‘Memphis in June’ is from by far the best album I’ve heard of hers, although curiously none of the songs on it seem to ever make the greatest hits compilations. Whether the song’s description of sitting in rocking chairs on oleander-smelling verandas in Memphis is a similar experience to eyeing up the traffic from a doorstep in Ditchling Road, I wouldn’t like to say. If you’ve got Nina going on in the background though, I’d say that’s probably good enough. (PS Jonny’s suggestion for Song of the Month is ‘Back at the Funny Farm’ by Motorhead, which is a “lovely little ditty” apparently.) ROYAL PAVILION

25

The first in a series of articles uncovering some of the treasures and stories of the Royal Pavilion...

The Injured Queen of England A new acquisition in the Royal Pavilion is causing quite a stir. ‘I do believe that the spirit of George is not too happy with us displaying this in his beloved Royal Pavilion,’ explains David Beevers, Keeper of the Royal Pavilion. The item in question is the unofficial coffin plate of his wife, Queen Caroline of Brunswick, which King George IV refused to allow to be attached to her coffin when she was buried in her native Brunswick. It’s no secret that the marriage of George and Caroline was a complete disaster. Engaged in November 1794, the couple had never met and George only agreed to marry Caroline because he was heavily in debt: if he contracted a marriage with an eligible princess, Parliament would increase his allowance. According to George, ‘one damn German Frau is as good as another.’ George was reputedly drunk on the wedding day and regarded Caroline as both ‘unattractive and unhygienic’. A troubled marriage ensued which ended with Caroline’s exile from Britain. However, she returned following the tragic death of her daughter Princess Charlotte and riots broke out in support of her. Caroline became a figurehead for the growing radical movement that demanded political reform and opposed the unpopular Prince Regent. Using her new radical affiliations as a convenient

excuse, George pressed for divorce. Despite George’s best attempts, Caroline retained a strong popularity amongst the masses and made plans to attend George IV’s coronation service on 19 July 1821 as queen. George had Caroline turned away from the coronation at the doors of Westminster Abbey. That same night Caroline fell ill and over the next three weeks her condition deteriorated. She died at Brandenburg House, Hammersmith, on 7 August 1821. In her will she requested to be buried in her native Brunswick and that her coffin plate should be engraved bearing the inscription: ‘Deposited, Caroline of Brunswick the injured Queen of England.’ A coffin plate thus inscribed was duly made on the instructions of her executors, but the king refused to allow it to be attached to the coffin. At St Peter’s Church, Chelmsford, where the coffin rested overnight on its way to Brunswick Cathedral, an unseemly row broke out when Caroline’s executors succeeded in screwing to the coffin the silver plate requested by the queen. This was removed by order of Clarenceux King of Arms and the official plate with a Latin inscription attached. Displayed in the Royal Pavilion is the ‘unofficial’ coffin plate requested by Caroline. The coffin plate is on loan from the descendants of Stephen Lushington, one of the queen’s executors. It is a remarkable and poignant relic of the hated wife of George IV, the injured Queen of England. The coffin plate is currently on display in the Yellow Ante Room of the Royal Pavilion. QUIZ QUESTION EIGHT: Which brothers wrote the song summertime?

CHARITY

27

Here we feature again the local charity run by Fiveways residents...

Bright light shining Local Fiveways charity East Africa Children’s Project (EACP) are asking for your help to change impoverished families’ lives in East Africa. They have launched an appeal to replace toxic kerosene lamps with solar lamps. They can spend a quarter of their weekly earnings on kerosene. Yet using kerosene for lighting is incredibly dangerous and expensive, and carries extensive health and environmental drawbacks. Breathing kerosene fumes is the equivalent of smoking two packets of cigarettes a day. Startlingly two-thirds of adult females with lung cancer in developing nations are non-smokers. Children often use the lamps to read and do their homework but the light is so poor it increases the possibility of near-sightedness, and the proximity of the children to the kerosene flame is a risk in itself. Many children are terribly burned and scarred for life. EACP is a small table-top charity run by unpaid volunteers. For many years now they have worked tirelessly to raise funds to help young impoverished children and their families in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The money they raise is spent on small projects that make a huge difference. EACP supports local people on the ground who implement these projects and ensure they are successful.

20% OFF YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT

They have helped young mothers establish their own sewing businesses to support their families. They equip local schools with books, laptops, bedding and school uniforms to support educational needs. They fund solar and biogas projects in small villages and sanitary towel supplies to keep girls in school. They also raise money for the building of sanitation facilities and rain harvesting systems. EACP has now got together with NGO Sunny Money (part of SolarAid) to raise money to replace kerosene lamps with safe and cost-effective solar lights. Together they want to ensure safer homes in East African communities. For just five pounds you can donate a solar lamp to a family. Money saved from solar is commonly spent on better food, education and farming inputs. On average children study for an extra hour each night after switching to solar and the improved light source is shown to increase motivation, attendance and performance at school. Solar lighting brings people together and makes people feel safe and secure in an otherwise dark, rural environment. It makes a huge difference for a small cost. You can find out more about EACP at www.eacpcharity. com or phone Piet Lagaay (Chairman) on 01273 541582.

Summer fun...

Health tip written by Alison Robertson owner of The Lavender Room, Gorgeous therapies for women.

Are you getting enough sleep? As part of our lifestyle, we need to consider sleep as an important factor for good health. Sleep deprivation doesn’t only sap our energy; it also weakens our immune system and exposes us to a variety of health problems. Lack of sleep also affects our behaviour and thought patterns. If your sleeping pattern has not changed, and you do not feel sleepy during the day, then you are probably getting enough sleep. Here are five things you can do to aid a good night's sleep.

Now the children are on holiday, you might be looking for ways to occupy them, especially on those long car or plane journeys. We have a great range of sticker, colouring and doodle books in stock, including the mini doodles. At about 15cm square, they are packed with things to do, but are small enough to put in your pocket. If you’re off to a festival this summer, come and check out our floral or feather headdresses, and these fantastic superhero masks and cuffs, all handmade by “I Wish I Was A”.

1. Dining – Eating earlier in the evening is recommended but if you are a late diner, choose a meal that is not too heavy on the carbohydrates and fat, or your body will have to work hard to digest the meal whilst you are trying to get off to sleep. 2. Bedtime drink - Milky drinks are great to aid sleep as milk is rich in tryptophan, which the body converts into serotonin - a natural hormone in the body that can make you sleepy. Drinking tea, coffee, alcohol or caffeinated drinks late in the evening is too stimulating for the brain to switch off and relax. 3. Winding down - Having a bath or shower before bedtime will help you relax and reading a book or magazine etc will also help you to wind down. A cool and airy bedroom is recommended to aid sleep too. 4. Smoking or/and drinking excess alcohol can have an adverse effect on your sleep pattern. 5. Make time for YOU! Book a spa treatment…..guaranteed to put you in a divine state of relaxation. Either persuade someone to give you a massage – or trot down to the Lavender Room for August’s special offer…. Nighty night! alison@lavenderroomtherapy.co.uk www.lavenderroomtherapy.co.uk 07940 503 001
