Ed’s Anthony Kilner

The Faces of Shamanic Healing This month’s issue covers the faces of traditional and modern-day shamanism. It’s been interesting gaining an understanding of how shamanistic work fits into our society and where it originated from. Kristy Allan is not your typical shaman, her journey from trauma to working shamanically has been a tough one at times, yet her connection to the earth is obvious when chatting with her. Kristy’s connection to Spirit is amazing and working with her guides and totem animals have changed her in ways she had never thought possible. My interview with Kristy opened my eyes to what true shamanistic work is really about. How it embodies multiple understandings/connections in a way that encompasses all facets of the spirit world and on an earthly level to connect people to their soul.

A Letter from the Editor

Letter

Kristy doesn’t like the term ‘shaman’ however she understands that it’s a label the closely matches her life as a healer. Her work is about helping people reconnect with their soul and assisting fractured soul’s to heal. Freya Sampson from WA introduces us to respected Elder Nanna Violet. Nanna Violet is referred to as the ‘Elder’s Elder’ and she has been working as an indigenous healer (shaman) all her life. Freya’s interview offers a beautiful insight into her life. Freya also chatted with Ryam Richards about his Crystal Dreaming work. His journey into this form of healing is classed as yet another form of shamanic work that helps people on a soul level. For someone like myself, who loves crystals and working with them in varied ways, this was an interesting interview to read. Our health, well-being and holistic arts columnist, Joti Gore, is referred to as the Naked Shaman His Native American bloodlines flow strong, and he works in various ways to help people heal through various modalities that are combined, to again, help people reconnect with their soul and their soul’s purpose. Is it possible to walk and heal at the same time? Blaise van Hecke, our Busybird advertiser and supporter of Supernal, walked the Camino de Santiago to find out. The internal changes within Blaise and others she met along the way highlighted just how much healing can occur on this famous pilgrimage. These amazing people all come from different backgrounds, socioeconomic groups and life experience and I must say

November 2019 they are all down to earth folks. They have all found a path to shamanic work that is unique and special to each one. A common thread is that elders/ shamans/healers from the spirit world have connected through dreams/meditation/ trance to help each of them through their journey to help others. It is a special connection they have and one that is beautiful to read about. I hope you enjoy learning about them. Supernal Magazine Giveaways We are racing towards 2020 and as a huge year closes the fantastic team here at Supernal are looking for more ways to share people’s stories. Starting from the end of November we will be starting a campaign to drive up subscriptions and many of the wonderful writers for the mag are offering up their services or products to help make joining and becoming a part of the Supernal community a little sweeter. Birdnapping Season! Wildlife Victoria is keen to make the public aware that Springtime is peak birdnapping season! Fledglings are young birds that have just started to leave the nest. They spend about a week on the ground as they learn to fly, building up their muscles under the watchful eye of their parents. They’re fully feathered and a little clumsy so are often mistaken for injured adults but this is a very normal - and important - stage in every young bird’s development. If you come across a fledgling bird, always check if its parents are nearby. They’ll usually be swooping or sitting in a tree calling out to their baby, and will still be feeding it every couple of hours. If you can see a parent and the bird is not injured then there is no need to intervene other than to keep pets and children away and give the family some space. Please don’t become a birdnapper! If the fledgling is in a very dangerous spot, such as on the road, it’s OK to pick it up and put it in a safer place nearby such as a low branch or bushes, the parents will not abandon it. If the baby bird has fluff instead of feathers it is a nestling. Nestlings are too young to be out of the nest and need assistance. If you’re not sure if the bird needs help, take a photo and give our Wildlife Emergency Operators a call on 03 8400 7300 for some advice, or send it through using the Snap Send Solve app. You can also help baby birds by donating to the Wildlife Emergency Response Service. Your gift will help us to ensure we have enough trained Emergency Response Operators on call from dawn to dusk every day.

The Spirit Of Things Development Circles & Groups by Sam Duly There are many different types of development groups. Sometimes it is a matter of attending a few different groups to understand their subject matter and find what resonates with us on a personal level. Some examples are meditation, healing, spiritual development, psychic development, mental mediumship, trance and physical mediumship. It’s important for a student to have worked on ‘self’ before they embark on any formal training. Learning who we are and nurturing the spirit within is a part of the journey. How can we help others if we haven’t helped ourselves first? Meditation and clearing the mind are also important, as life feels like a merrygo-round most of the time. Making time for yourself is an essential part of the process, whether it’s connecting

10

Supernal Magazine

with the ocean or nature or simply calming the mind. Retreating into one’s inner consciousness helps in the preparation of our mind, before we embark on the next stage of our development.

“Learning who we are and nurturing the spirit within is a part of the journey.” When you are ready to move on to formal mental mediumship training, it’s necessary to find the right teacher. Recommendations are good, but you also need to feel comfortable too. It is important to go and see them work publicly in a Mediumship demonstration or at a Church service. A 1:1 reading will also help with your decision. The teacher you choose should have two important qualities. Firstly, that they are fully knowledgeable and highly experienced in many situations including the ability to assist and guide students

if they have any difficulties. The second is that the teacher commands respect and loyalty. A great teacher will also recommend that you go to other teachers to study subjects that they feel will help you. All teachers teach differently and you can gain a lot by experiencing in this way. Keep in mind that, although you can learn something new, don’t confuse new teaching with essentially different teaching methods. Always ask your chosen teacher if there is something you do not understand. Your teacher will want the best for you always. Having an experienced teacher that you have complete faith in, will also help with your class preparations and creating the right conditions for your own development. Having the right attitude to your development is the best preparation. Remain open to new aspects in your

mediumship learning and have no preconceived ideas on how the class will go. When you set yourself up correctly you will not fail. I feel at times that some students expect too much too soon, rather than allowing their development to unfold naturally. Some students just try too hard and then the conscious mind comes in and creates problems. This is the hardest thing to master, but there is no race - it will all come together when it’s meant to. Commitment to the group is also a necessity, along with an expected high attendance rate. If there is no continuity to enable harmony or a build-up of

energies, the group will not function as it should. If you are dedicated it will pay off enormously. Most groups run weekly, at the same time at the same place as continuity is important and the spirit world acknowledges this. It is invaluable to support each other in the group where big egos are not allowed. Simply working together as a team in the way that the ‘spirit team’ works with the group, brings great results.

phenomena to be produced. The medium has the right chemical structure, makeup, and the faculty within for this process to be successful. Physical phenomena trumpet communication and also direct and indirect voice boxes are created via spirit using either photoplasm or ectoplasm. The sitters also need to be happy within themselves and have a great interest in sitting for spirit.

There is more of a criterion to be met with a physical mediumship circle. Here the medium would choose suitable sitters for a circle by looking at their current physical and spiritual energy. As they are the ‘battery’ for the medium, their ability to sit and provide the necessary power is very important.

“The right attitude... is the best preparation.”

Harmony within the group is required as the medium is the conduit for the energy, which allows for the

It is important to note for anyone who wishes to commence running a mediumship group, that it is not a decision to be taken lightly and that you should be highly experienced in both working with students and running a circle. Your development will always be ongoing as it is life-long and when we pass, we will start learning all over again! Yours in Spirit, Sam Duly

The Breath of Life

Humanitree - part 7

Bija mantras By Freya Sampson Custodian Eartheart

Last month we discussed in detail the ritual of grounding your base or root chakra. As a part of that work we can practice chanting to strengthen out body, mind and energy system. A powerful practice for clearing your energy field is to chant the Bija mantras for each chakra. Bija in Sanskrit means seed and the Bija mantras are one-syllable seed sounds that, when said aloud, activate the energy of the

12

Supernal Magazine

chakras in order to purify and balance the mind and body. When you chant the Bija mantras, you resonate with the energy of the associated chakra, helping you focus upon your own intrinsic awareness of your body and its needs. In Vedic tradition, Bija mantras are used as tools for the expansion of one’s mind, by utilising the power of sound vibrations (mantra). The most literal translation of the word mantra is, ‘to liberate one’s mind.’ What is also important and interesting to know is that mantras come from the

sounds of nature. Thousands of years ago the Rishi’s sat in nature, eyes closed, listening to the sounds of nature and creation. “Purify and balance the mind and body.” They found within them patterns and links to different types of energies. With this knowledge they applied practices and from the practices came experiences, which flowered into wisdom. It is from this, that they created the mantras of the Vedic tradition, which have since been chanted for 1000s of years.

energy They are: LAM - chakra 1 (root) VAM - chakra 2 (sacral/navel) RAM - chakra 3 (solar plexus) YAM - chakra 4 (heart) HAM - chakra 5 (throat) AUM - chakra 6 (third eye/ brow) OM - chakra 7 (crown) All you need to do is take a deep breath in, whilst focused on the appropriate chakra and chant the Bija mantra 21 times quite quickly. Then release your breath through everywhere. “Mantras come from the sounds of nature - the most literal translation of the word mantra is, ‘to liberate one’s mind.” These are very simple and easy daily practices. Remember that when you are learning, it usually takes a few goes to get the hang of it, so keep going! It doesn’t matter what you sound like, only that you do it! Your voice will change as the condition of your chakras improves. It takes practice and repetition to grow clear meridians, chakras and auric field. Immediately and increasingly so, you will

experience yourself as the extraordinary musical instrument that you truly are. Life will become your song, with all of the other people being the members of the orchestra! Your notes will get longer and stronger, softer and sweeter, as you tap into the flow - the experience of you. Your life will enliven and be enriched and you’ll attract more and more people and circumstances, where the music you make together is sublime. “The Bija (seed) mantras are one-syllable seed sounds that, when said aloud, activate the energy of the chakras.” These are all techniques you can build into your daily practice. While you are young and growing in skill

and strength, it’s best to do the practices every day. You, like the small seedling, need to be watered every day. Nurtured and fed, so that it becomes a strong tree, with straight trunk, deep root and high reaching branches. Once you are in a routine, like brushing your teeth, it takes very little time to do and you won’t even need to think much about what to do anymore - it will flow off your consciousness with ease and grace, leaving you feeling centred, grounded and more peaceful. Who could ask for more! Have a magnificent month. Enjoy your journey.

5G 4th industrial revolution or crime against humanity?

Part 1

To understand 5G and what it means to this planet, Supernal Magazine has taken a very in-depth look at this area. This is not about scaremongering but rather to offer up links and detailed information as best we can, to help educate our readers and point them in the direction of understanding the drivers behind 5G.

5G for many mobile phone and internet users is about upgrading from 4G. It’s the next level upgrade to keep up with technology. But is 5G just another upgrade for higher speed and quicker download or is it more complicated? This article aims to explore 5G and investigate the technology behind it. What is its history? What are the benefits and disadvantages of 5G and is the disruption an opportunity or a global health catastrophe? A brief history of 5G Historically, we have witnessed wireless technology development from the first-generation 1G to 5G. Introduced in the early 1980s, 1G provided voice calls. Next came 2G that spawned the first digitally encrypted telecommunications to improve voice quality, data

security, data capacity and transmission. In the late 1990s, 3G networks provided voice calls, faster data transfer speeds, data streaming and mobile internet access. In 2008, 4G featured data transfer 10 times the speed of 3G, enhanced quality video data and increased network speed. Now in 2019 the buzz is 5G. According to the Whistleout1 comparison site marketing to the noninternet savvy consumer, it is about faster network speeds, as fast as 20Gbps and a minimum download of 100Mbps. The minimum speed is equal to the fastest current NBN rate. It features lower latency, which is the speed data travels from your phone to the internet and back. 5G will provide more simultaneous device connections. Other benefits include autonomous cars, 1 - https://www.whistleout.com/

connected machinery and the Internet of Things2 (IoT) devices. 5G is considered to have unlimited potential. Drivers of 5G So, what is driving 5G worldwide? What are the market conditions? According to the Defense Innovation Board (US, 2019)3, 5G will enable new technologies that will change the standard of public and private sector operations, from autonomous vehicles to Smart Cities, virtual reality and battle networks (cyber warfare). First movers in the telecommunications industry are positioned to set industry and technological standards for those that follow. First movers make billions, generate jobs and lead in technology innovation. The first mover sets IT architecture. For example, 2 - https://youtu.be/_AlcRoqS65E - What is the Internet of Things? And why should you care? | Benson Hougland | TEDxTemecula 2014. Other newer videos are explaining the IoT however there were potential concerns back in 2014.

expose handsets sold in India are Chinese. Chinese internet application companies, led by Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent and new companies like TikTock are growing in influence and revenue. In 2009, all of the top 10 Internet companies by revenue were American. Today, four of the top 10 are Chinese.

in the early 2010s, AT&T and Verizon deployed LTE (Long Term Evolution) in the US winning the auction (2008) for the 700MHz spectrum. The network was rolled out to 10 times the consumer network compared to 3G networks. The stepchange in performance drove adoption of new handsets (iPhones) and new semiconductors moving more data and faster. Companies such as Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon and Netflix built new applications using the bandwidth. This initiative drove global US dominance in wireless and internet services as an ecosystem over the past decade. US China trade war We have heard in the news about the US China trade war and commentaries about Huawei, ZTE, Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo, Chinese

handset vendors, who grew despite minimal sales in the Freya Sampson & Anthony Kilner. Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei grew global revenues from approximately $28B in 2009 to $107B in 2018. Ericsson’s revenue during the same period fell from $27.9B to $23.9B. Nokia’s revenue fell from $57.6B to $26.6B. Chinese handset vendors like Huawei, ZTE, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo have grown market share from less than approximately 6% in 2009 to over 30% share in 2018, and are still growing rapidly despite minimal sales in the Freya Sampson & Anthony Kilner. India represents a wireless market larger than that of the US, and 59.7% of all

These shifts have not just occurred because Chinese equipment is cheaper. In many cases, Chinese equipment is superior to its Western rivals. Huawei and ZTE have been the leader in massive MIMO radio systems with 64 transmit and receive elements. Many consider Huawei’s P series and Mate Android phones the most advanced phones in the world and these devices are powered by Huawei’s own Hi-silicon division. Alibaba’s cloud services are growing quickly, already fourth in the world, behind Amazon, Microsoft and Google. As you can see, there is a huge money driver to be at the forefront of setting up and delivering the 5G network to the world. Next month we’ll continue to look at the 5G network spectrum. Is it all a big positive or is there any truth in potential health issues for people and the environment?

Kristy Allan: A Path To Contemporary Shamanism

feature The practice of traditional Shamanism dates back at least 10,000 years and has always been intrinsically associated with indigenous and tribal societies. Shamans were carefully selected from 'shaman families' to assist their community, commune with spirits, heal the sick and escort souls to the afterlife. In recent years there has been a resurgence in shamanistic practices and many people with non-indigenous backgrounds are being 'called' to this work through profound personal experiences. One of these people is Kristy Allan, who has shared her story with us and gives us an insight into how she incorporates shamanistic healing practices into her work as a healer.

As soon as we begin to speak, I feel a connection to Kristy and the beautiful earthly energy that she emanates. Her workspace is meticulously ornamented with feathers, animal antlers, crystals and the smell of freshly burnt sage which perfectly reflect the nature of her work. My curiosity is piqued, I am interested to know how someone is ‘called’ to work shamanically. Kristy explains, “I resonate with the definition of a shaman as being someone who is Chosen by the Spirits. The shaman then forges a healing relationship with the initiating Spirit and other Helping Spirits which puts them in a specifically divined role within the community,

which for me, is healing the fragmentation that occurs within the psyche and soul.”

“I have found the shamanic path consists of an ongoing function of death and rebirth through confrontations within the psyche and soul. ” She went on to say, “A shaman is a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, the conscious and unconscious, light and dark, one who can walk with a foot in each realm and most importantly bring back information and healing that can assist their community. The true power comes from

our relationship with the Spirit World. That is where all knowledge and healing comes from. I have found the shamanic path consists of an ongoing function of death and rebirth through confrontations within the psyche and soul. Where we are required to go through initiatory experiences and transformative rites of passage, which can be highly chaotic, yet serve with the aim of transformation and renewal. Collectively it is evident we are experiencing the resurgence of the shamanic archetype, tapping into its wisdom and allowing its impulse to inform, inspire, integrate and heal in order for us to come back into the wholeness of our true nature

and our relationship with the natural world.” I began to wonder just how Kristy’s calling was presented to her. She explains, “I had been working as a Kinesiologist and healer for a number of years, mostly working with the subconscious and subtle bodies (also known as the auric field) to facilitate my clients towards healing. This changed quite profoundly as my Helping Spirits re-awoke my shamanic skills and abilities from previous lifetimes. My initiation came in the form of a vivid dream where I had a merging with my power animal – the jaguar - which was a call from the ancestors. It was from that moment that my work seemed to shapeshift in a different direction and my own psyche became engaged in a much deeper psychological process of death and renewal with very clear and often frightening shamanic themes.” This brought me to consider how such a shift may have changed how Kristy works

22

Supernal Magazine

with her clients. She said, “Instead of relying on getting biofeedback from the subconscious and subtle body as you do in Kinesiology, I entered into a much more trance induced state of consciousness to divine information and bring forth healing from the Spirit World. My work became spirit led.

“A shaman assists in healing the psychospiritual dis-ease of that which afflicts the soul and remedies it from a place of Spirit.” A typical example to explain this is Spirit’s prophetic vision of being able to see a client’s likelihood to develop liver cancer in 5-10 years and remove the causal factor from which the disease would manifest. Often our issues can be entrenched at a much deeper level, involving the soulful and spiritual realms which modern day psychology and medicine do not incorporate into their model of care. A shaman

assists in healing the psychospiritual dis-ease of that which afflicts the soul and remedies it from a place of Spirit.” This type of work is both sensitive and challenging and requires a certain level of awareness and understanding. It would make sense to assume that someone with such a capability for empathy may have experienced some level of trauma of their own. Kristy replied, “I think in order to become a healer one must be wounded in some way as to embody the woundedhealer archetype. I believe this is how genuine empathy and compassion are formed. My history includes severe and on-going childhood trauma, this trauma was what I would term my first shamanic initiation and without it I probably would not be doing the work I am doing today. Because of the nature of the abuse I endured and my inability to escape it, I learnt how to dissociate as a way to separate and protect

feature

myself. It was from this wounding that I first developed a relationship to Spirit. My trauma became a doorway as did my own shamanic descent into the underworld to heal and reclaim the lost and broken parts of myself.

“Often our issues can be entrenched at a much deeper level,” Now, instead of dissociating as a coping mechanism, in my therapeutic work I can purposely dissociate into a trance state to immediately commune, retrieve and heal

the split off parts of the psyche and soul of my clients or to dialogue with the spirit realm for divination and healing.” Much of Kristy’s work is based around Soul retrieval. I was curious to understand what that actually entails. Kristy explained, “I feel the soul is the agent for spirit and is timeless and eternal. It seems to be linked to both the spiritual and human aspects of our nature. The aspect of the soul that I work with most is the part of the soul that is suffering and causing my client to be in soul-sickness. This can be from past life

wounding or events that have caused us to be in soul-loss in this lifetime. The soul appears to be magnetic in nature, drawing to us the situations, events, people, places etc. for our evolution, growth and learning.” “To me the notion of soul retrieval is where parts of ourselves get fragmented, disassociated separated, walled off and isolated and are not under the conscious control of the psyche and soul energy. All kinds of trauma and situations can disconnect you from your soul or cause soul-loss. The cure lies in

Supernal Magazine

23

healing separation so one can be restored to one’s original nature. I have seen that even the deepest and darkest wounds cannot permanently taint the true nature of the soul - that nothing is beyond healing.”

“All kinds of trauma and situations can disconnect you from your soul or cause soul-loss. The cure lies in healing separation so one can be restored to one’s original nature.” So ultimately, it would appear that Kristy’s shamanic work is based on the concept of soul illumination – the name of her business being Healing for the Illuminated Soul. Kristy agrees, stating that “Spirit actually gave me the name of my

24

Supernal Magazine

business one evening as I was carrying the rubbish out to the bin. Which is quite ironic really as soul illumination to me is tending to the unconscious, unawakened, unhealed, fragmented, shadow aspects of our self so we can awaken and illuminate more of our true nature. One cannot liberate and transform without discarding what is no longer useful, healing our psychological blindness so one can emerge from the shadows into the light of conscious awareness. I have become so psychically, empathically and intuitively attuned to my clients that I enter their state so fully that I am able to commune telepathically with their psyche and soul, in particular to those aspects of self that are split off and in soul loss.

This line of work was a calling from the depths of my soul.” “There were many challenges, insecurities and traumatised aspects of me that I needed to overcome and of course there is still much more to be done. What has kept me going is the magical, mystical and undeniable relationship I have with spirit and the way they inspire and call me along this path. My elders have come in the form of guides from the super sensible realms, I work with five spirit guides all of whom I have revered and formed alliances with in past lives.

“Collectively it is evident we are experiencing the resurgence of the shamanic archetype.”

feature

I completely trust these guides due to their level of attainment and enlightenment and the way in which they appeared on my path. I was asked to trust and be guided by them. They said the physical is an illusion, albeit a persistent one, and that my work and talent was in treating the psycho-spiritual dis-ease within the psyche and soul. The rest is history, although I still love muscle testing as a way of tuning in and checking in with the body-soul of my client. My path has been very experiential, and when one’s path is like this we can question and doubt our experience, our reality, our self. When we are in a genuine, spirit involved

process, Spirit will always find a way to keep you on the path and undoubtedly prove their existence and relationship to you, many times over.

“One cannot liberate and transform without discarding what is no longer useful.” I often joke with my clients that our sacred talent, destiny and life path doesn’t descend softly from the heavens on a nicely written scroll for us to pick up and read. We have to pursue it and work through all the things that would seek to block, sabotage, distort and go against our inherent divine nature. We are conditioned in such a way that accepting our divine inheritance is one

of the hardest things we will ever be asked to do. But we can do it. There are so many people reminding us of this truth, and we are all helping to walk each other home.” To learn more about Kristy’s work, you can visit her website at: http:// healingfortheilluminated soul.com.au/about/ or www.kristyallan.com.au You can also stay up to date with Kristy by liking her Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/ KristyAllanKinesiology

A Way to Healing on the

Camino de Santiago Is it possible that walking can cure a person of emotional malaise? If so, does it matter where a person walks? Are there places in the world that have healing powers we cannot explain, or energetic spaces that are more powerful than we understand such as the Songlines that Australian indigenous people follow. These Songlines are also referred to as Dreaming Tracks, which are routes across the land, or sky, and are passed down across generations through traditional songs, dance and painting.

By Blaise van Hecke

here is a palpable shift in energy in the world today. It is apparent that so many people are feeling lost, lonely, afraid and angry and are looking for better ways to live. Energetically, humanity is out of kilter: we’ve raped the land and treated each other badly. I have always been a walker, preferably by the river and amongst the trees. Walking is my meditation, the time where I connect with the earth and myself and solve my problems. It is such a simple remedy for physical, spiritual and emotional pain that so many people are not aware of. This joy of walking took me to the Camino de Santiago in Spain. I went simply to enjoy the walk and challenge myself – seven weeks, solo. “I started to feel something special – as though my whole journey was carried by love.” They say that the Camino provides, ‘that it will show you the way.’ Some say that it is a special path because it follows the Milky Way and that it has exceptional powers. I was sceptical. While I am a spiritual person, I am also a practical person. I was also told that the Camino would change my life. I admit to scoffing quietly at THAT claim, especially since my life was good, no change needed.

feature Yellow arrows and scallop shells show the pilgrim the Way and pilgrim hostels called Albergues give refuge after a long day of walking. At each Albergue, at check in, your credential (pilgrim passport) is stamped and you are given a bed and sometimes a meal. Within two weeks, I got into a rhythm. My fitness improved after the initial trials of walking 20 kilometres each day. I was proving to myself that I could handle being on my own. I was homesick but I was enjoying the time to think and get to know myself. The Camino has three distinct sections that are very noticeable when you walk it. The first part is physical. It takes a couple of weeks to get conditioned for walking for hours every day and the landscape is changeable. There is not much time to think about anything other than the physical aspect of the walk. The next section, called the Meseta, is mental and the paths are flat and boring. Because the terrain is easy to navigate, you find yourself with time to think. For hours. And hours. For many pilgrims, this thinking time is too intense and they find ways to distract themselves: talking to other pilgrims, listening to music with headphones or skipping this section completely by jumping on a bus. “It is apparent that so many people are feeling lost, lonely, afraid and angry and are looking for better ways to live. The third section is the spiritual. By now we have worked through the physical hardships of walking and our body is strong, we have gone through the mental test and our mind is strong, leaving us free to open up to our spirit. On day thirty, at the highest physical point of the Camino, I had an intense spiritual experience that took me by surprise. It started with the simple act of leaving a stone at the base of a cross. This is a ritual performed by many pilgrims and I had brought the stone especially for it. I was not prepared for the surge of emotion I experienced or how difficult it was to leave the stone behind. I remained at the spot for over an hour, tears flowing and sharing hugs with a complete stranger from Germany who was also experiencing her own release. The most surprising thing about my interactions with other pilgrims was the level of intimacy that was established quickly. Complete strangers would tell each other their deepest desires and secrets. Was it something about the Camino that allowed people to feel safe?

Was there some spiritual force at work? Conversations opened up that were beyond the obligatory talk about the weather. On my first day I met a 32-year old German man (how old you are, where you come from and why you’re walking the Camino are opening questions with everyone you meet) who said that he was happily married with a young daughter but felt that something significant was missing from his life. His pain was tangible. I only saw him for a day or two because he was walking faster than me. I hope he found what he was looking for. I started to feel something special – as though my whole journey was carried by love. I felt it from friends and family at home who were following my walk on social media and from all the people I met along the way. I even saw hearts in the landscapes: heart-shaped rocks and puddles, heart-shapes flowers, red wine by the bucket load and smiling people everywhere I looked. It could just be that Spain is full of love and yes, I fell in love with Spain, but it was more than that. I developed love and gratitude for myself. I remembered my love for travel and people and realised that I am strong and lovable. I decided over the course of my journey I had allowed myself to be open to the experience. I was vulnerable and maybe anxious but I pushed forward, one foot in front of the other, and allowed everything to happen. This provided an opening for me to let go of past hurts and move on. I know it isn’t an instant

feature reckoning, I will still have moments of doubt or insecurity but for the most part I feel liberated and ready for a new phase in my life. I didn’t necessarily learn anything new about myself. I had to REMEMBER who I was, the person I had tucked away for safekeeping. How can we liberate ourselves from our past? How can we open ourselves up to love and trust and to listen to our intuition so that we can live our truth? It isn’t practical for everyone to take a six-week pilgrimage – although I recommend it – but for all the people who experienced something similar to me, there were many others who walked solidly to the finish line, unready or unwilling to be open to something, wanting only to tick the Camino off their list. Many others found it too intense and went home before they had planned. “…for the most part I feel liberated and ready for a new phase in my life.” I met many people who do the walk annually or every few years, as a way to reset themselves, including a Danish woman in her 70s who has walked nine years in a row. Healing isn’t something that just happens to us. We have to allow it to enter. This can be frightening and hard work. The Camino de Santiago is 800 kilometres and on average takes six weeks to walk. This time allows the pilgrim to open up to healing in a way that is very difficult to achieve with the usual demands of life. The simple act of walking can open your heart in a safe way and lead to healing. The next time you go for a walk (the longer the better), observe how it changes your emotional and physical self. You’ll find that your heart fills with love as you work through your problems and connect with nature. Blaise van Hecke is an award-winning writer and owner of Busybird Publishing. Respected Elder Nana Violet Newman

Indigenous Shamanism in the Dawning Age of Aquarius Freya Sampson Custodian Eartheart

There are three Moonths (months) left in the Age of Pisces. The crux frequency of the Piscean Age is separation/duality. After 20th February 2020, we step through the gateway into the Age of Aquarius, the age of ‘unity’. These astrological ‘Ages’ each span 2160 years. There has been so much dividing and conquering over the course of humanity’s history and only now are we, as a global culture and species, beginning to grasp the concept of acceptance and respect for one another, our differences and to also awaken our capacity to work together towards the common goal of abundance of all good things, for all. It is clearly evident in our current governing systems and global obsession

34

Supernal Magazine

with the delusional and unsustainable paradigm of belief, that economic growth can be infinite, that we have some way to go - yet here we are in the turning of the Age, together finding our way to pass a camel through the eye of a needle. “If you want to learn about healing and culture, come to it, the calling to learn, with the innocence of a child.”

This sunny Thursday morning I am visiting, respected Elder, Nana Violet Newman. She is described by other Elders, as an ‘Elders, Elder’. In ‘language’ she describes herself as a ‘nyamuri’, a healer. We’re having a conversation about humanity’s development, her role and life journey, the differences between pre-settlement and our current multicultural society and how to step into the

dawning Golden Age. “How did you come to know that you were a nyamari? I asked politely. Nana Violet referred to her ancestors, “They chose me, the old people.” “What it was like to be chosen?” “Very scaaary... it was a big shock to my system. They sent me to this land, to the black soil.” This refers to ‘Wadjak Noongar Booja’, the black soil of the Noongar tribe’s place in the area of the Perth and the south-west region of WA. Nana Violet said, she was one of the stolen generation. “I did not know who my family was and where they came from, because when I was taken I was too young to know. I am one of the stone people of the red soil, part Pitjinjara, and I have a bit of white blood too.”

interview Nana Violet replied, “Yes. I have found out that I have an uncle from this way, so I have this place in my blood, which makes it okay, but I didn’t know at the time.” “At the time without the knowledge of your bloodlines, did you feel like you were breaking law and crossing a cultural boundary?” “Yes.” Nana Violet stated firmly. Nana Violet has woven together culture and the ‘new-age’ paradigms and is initiating souls who are incarnated in multicultural bodies, to recall their past life mastery as Indigenous Law Keepers, passing on her knowledge of healing and how to bridge the old and new world paradigms to students who are called to learn from her. “Was it scary for you because you didn’t have a teacher in a body? In times past, when a person was chosen for a role in a tribe would there have been a teacher?” “Yes.” Nana Violet said quietly. “Was it also scary because in times past, a stone person would stay in their country and do their work and not come to another country and do nyamuri work there?”

Nana Violet stated, “If you want to learn about healing and culture, come to it, the calling to learn, with the innocence of a child. We are all the divines’ children.” “How do you help people with your nyamuri gifts?” Nana Violet explained, “One way is by healing their totems. People can have many totems, it may be their kangaroo is sick or has been killed. When you

heal the totem, their body gets better.” Nana Violet constantly communes with the ‘ancestors and ascended masters’ and she takes her guidance from them about what requires healing in the land. She is always serving the Earth, facilitating the clearing of trauma from ‘country’ or people, working with the earth and star ancestral lineages of earthlings. Having been through several initiations with Nana Violet, I can say that the experience is like no other. The profound gifts, wisdom and education received, has enhanced my ability to commune with nature and the cosmos in a way that is nothing less than extraordinary. Nana Violets message is, “My role is a bridge builder between the old and new ways, through this leading humanity to a newly evolved way of being. This is the true role of Aboriginal shaman.” The Indigenous culture of Australia is an untapped library of cosmic and earthly wisdom. In this new Age we are part of a cosmic community who are working together to unify and evolve consciousness, so that we can once again take our place in the kingdoms of creation by returning to our roles as custodians of Earth and all of creation.

Raym Richards were emanating towards him that he cried.

Diary of an Urban Shaman

Crystal Dreaming Freya Sampson Custodian Eartheart

Raym Richards is a modernday shaman and the creator of the Crystal Dreaming™ modality, in which one can have a safe shamanic journey, accessing one’s full consciousness. Crystal Dreaming was born through a self-initiation experience that Raym had when he was 42 years of age. He says, “I was at a dinner party with friends, when I picked up a green obsidian crystal and was drawn into it. During this experience I met my team of guides in spirit, who love me unconditionally. There was a lot of cheering and clapping, a big party was going on.” He says it was such an emotional experience, because of the profound love that his guides

36

Supernal Magazine

Raym looked over towards his wife, twin flame and love of his life, noticing a soft pink light was flowing from her heart to his. She realised what was occurring, feeling so much love and gratitude, as she had been praying for this connection to be realised for some time. Raym describes the experience as quite surreal, and it took some accepting to then integrate this paradigm shift into his life. He was a successful performance artist and had no plans of becoming a shaman. So, when his ‘team’ reminded him of his purpose to create Crystal Dreaming, he telepathed, “But I don’t even believe in you, you’ve got the wrong guy!” Despite his remonstrations, Pandora’s Box was well and truly opened and people started arriving out of seemingly nowhere, to receive his assistance. Raym says, “My guides really didn’t get involved too much, they sat back and told me that I knew what to do, so just do it.” The unfurling of the sessions that followed, caused him to realise and remember his past life mastery in this realm. Raym continued, “I noticed that there were common themes that occurred in

the sessions, so within a year I was beginning to train students to facilitate the process.” “It was a hectic first five years of intensive shamanic training, with no physical world teachers, I had to continually draw on my past life mastery.” This was not at all a part of his mental construct of the world and just about every situation you could imagine came up for him to face and master. This experience of personally awakening to his inner shaman, is an interesting aspect of how consciousness has adapted to become ‘modern day shamanism’. In ancient cultures, it was a tradition that was handed down from teacher to student. There were temples, likened to ashrams in the east, where one could go to

interview

live and learn, or the tribe’s shaman would seek an apprentice and train them before leaving their body. In western culture and society, we do not have these types of learning facilities, unless they have been seeded and grown by eastern culture. Now, with the evolving multi-culture of humanity globally, we find ourselves living in the time of flux that had been foretold by many ancient cultures, such as the Mayans, Egyptians and in biblical stories (the end of the calendars, 21/12/2012 – not the end of the world). This partnered with the fact that in very recent times, the relationship between european settlers and the indigenous peoples of Australia, USA and so on, has been deeply wounded. This ‘moving into town’ being done in an ‘unconscious’ way, has

resulted in trust not being present and a reluctance to share the wisdom of their cultures traditions. Due to this, as a westerner in Australia, it has been tremendously difficult to access the shamanic initiatory path. After 20 years of such initiations, with Australian Aboriginals, I am only aware of a handful of other people who have been able to access this significant training. Raym points out, “There are different types of shamanism. One is where a student is awakened to the multi-dimensionality of the self and creation, then left to fend for the self and work it out. That is not my preferred methodology or how Crystal Dreaming works.” “During this time of flux that we find ourselves in, we

need to rely upon our inner guidance to stay in flow and the possibility of creating a new paradigm and healthy environment on Earth. This is how I am able to contribute to that change.” “The awakening of souls to their life purpose, and empowering them to fulfil it by creating a safe sacred space through which clearing the path of blockages can occur, leads to the opportunity to stably connect with their team in spirit.” Five years ago, Raym began empowering his advanced students to teach the modality. Crystal Dreaming is available in most major cities in Australia and also in USA. If you’d like to find out more, Raym also publishes his true stories each fortnight on Diary of an Urban Shaman.

The Naked Shaman Please don’t call it Native American Shamanism By Joti Gore We asked our regular contributor Joti Gore, The Naked Shaman, to offer his personal thoughts about Shamanism. With a diverse background and lineage going back to the Cherokee people of America, Joti is well versed in understanding the nature of shamanism. In our western world of looking for answers to life circumstance and situations, there are a plethora of ideas and sometimes misguided opinions about shamanism what it is, what it means and who it benefits. A neo-shamanism movement has become

38

Supernal Magazine

part of the holistic healing arts community. There seems to be many short courses everywhere to become a certified shaman. Then, the newly ‘certified shaman’ pays a fee to associations, insurance companies and registers with a regulatory body who authenticate them, or they don’t. There is no true regulation and no authentication! This article discusses what shaman means and asks if it is an appropriate term when talking about the indigenous peoples, in particular Native Americans. Workshops in Native American drumming, shamanic workshops, Shamanic certificates and Shamanism’ have been a great topic of debate. There has been a movement from Native North and South American cultures asking to remove this description from those not of their lineage and to appropriately rename it. This idea is fair from their point of view, but not equitable for those ‘not of the blood’ leading workshops globally. Their argument for this is that it’s not of the language or religious belief of this Native American community and they don’t typically offer certificates and courses based in shamanism. They are not asking that a practice is discontinued, just that it is named more

appropriately. For example, offering an Apache healing or a Sioux Massage/ Reading because a practitioner believes they are channelling someone from that nation but is not of the blood. What is a shaman and shamanism? A shaman is defined as someone who is regarded as having access to, and influence in, the world of benevolent and malevolent spirits and who typically enters into a trance state during a ritual or practices divination and healing. According to Wikipedia: ‘shamanism is a practice that involves a practitioner reaching altered states of consciousness in order to perceive and interact with what they believe to be a spirit world and channel these transcendental energies into this world. In the 20th century, many westerners involved in counter-cultural movements have created modern magico-religious practices influenced by their indigenous religions across the world, creating what has been termed neoshamanism. This has created a backlash and accusations of cultural appropriations due to the exploitations and misappropriations of power when those outside the

interview culture try to claim to have traditional techniques and supernatural powers’. What is the difference between a shaman and a medicine man? A shaman is seen as the mediator between supernatural powers and man, while the medicine man is known as the curer of diseases through traditional techniques. Part of my background is Cherokee which I have found fascinating to live. Didanawisgi is the Cherokee word for medicine man. Understanding this distinction means a medicine man can also be a shaman. However, in this description of shaman, the lines between medicine and the term ‘shaman’, which does not exist in Native American languages, are blurred. According to authors Meadows & Stevens, a shaman is a warrior, healer, explorer, teacher, artist and leader - the highest and most respected individual. The ethnologist suggests the word shaman originates from the Siberian language, translating to ‘one who works with fire’. It’s believed that a shaman has a unique perception of the world and can deviate amongst our space and time concepts. Most importantly, they noted that shamanism is

not a religion with dogma and is not bound by faith or personal experience. It is based on knowledge and learned experiences through practical application. One of the basic ideas is that everything is a product of energy and all these energies are interconnected creating cause and effect. Meadows indicated that, through modern advances and lack of interest from new generations, the art of ancient shamanic practices has either been watered down or lost over time. It’s believed that what survives are the connections to nature and a relationship to traditional beliefs. Meadows stated that, “’Shamanism’ is a term used by the Evenk people to describe THEIR way of walking the spirit world. Using that term to describe how

others do it is misleading and incorrect. It’s like calling all soda, Coke. Pepsi, Mt Dew, Dr. Pepper, Inca Cola, and Sprite are not Coke. This is my point. Yes, everyone can have soda. It doesn’t belong to anyone in particular, but when you talk about it in a generic way and remove the cultural nuances from which is spawns, you dilute it… You ruin the thing that you say you love, not only for yourself, but for others… I, in no way, said nor implied that people can’t or shouldn’t heal or practice their spirituality. I said, please respect other people’s spiritual traditions by calling things by their correct names and respecting the boundaries about what belongs to you and what does not. If something helps you, use it. Don’t teach it, sell it, or give it away if it’s not yours to do so!”

Reflections: Jane Offer

The Mystery

O

ver the many years of my life, I have come across people who have refuted, belittled and been amused by the way I think and feel about the way life works. I have been dubbed a hippy, a new ager, a spiritualist and have even been accused of not living in ‘the real world’ by someone close, whose own world now is slowly, surely and painfully breaking apart. My world may not be ‘real’ to many - how could it? It’s my reality, based on my personal experience, but I do love to see the ‘realist’ finally notice that the world does indeed work in mysterious ways.

“My world may not be ‘real’ to many how could it?” Recently, one person who has always viewed my

42

Supernal Magazine

beliefs with suspicion and as a bit ‘woo-woo’, especially from his staunch Catholic background, came to tell me of an experience he had that he thought was very weird. He had suddenly

thought about a school friend who he had not seen for over 30 years. There was no obvious reason so he felt moved to trace him via social media. He failed and decided the whole incident was a passing thought and no more. The next day, he went to work and an hour later a man walked in to buy

a coffee. He served him and the man called him by his name. And you’ve guessed it – it was the school friend. For someone whose mind is closed to the synchronicities of life, this was a mindblowing event but to those of us that see it as an everyday occurrence, it is ‘normal’. I don’t know if you have noticed but these synchronistic incidents are happening more frequently and with such amazing relevance that they cannot be denied any longer, by anyone. Let’s look at this experience. Did my friend’s thoughts create the link that brought the man to him? Was the ball already in motion that brought them together at that specific time and place? Why? It’s pretty

health and wellbeing clever organisation if you consider it. The man would have needed to be guided to that particular area and that café – one of three in the block of shops – on the very day that my friend was actually working there. After all, he lived at quite a distance and rarely came to the area yet here he was, on the day after my friend thought of him. We have no idea of why and how but that is the mystery of life I am talking about. My personal opinion is that these types of events are becoming more regular and being viewed as ‘normal’ to allow us to see that there is a wider picture and therefore provide an opportunity for all to experience for themselves the mystery of life, rather than becoming jaded by all the negative reports that assail our ears, eyes and minds.

“…. when we know better, we do better.” I feel that the opportunity to open our mind allows for the continued and exponential growth of the individual and the community as a whole. It seems to have a mission – a purpose – to create internal

and external harmony with all creation, one person at a time. As we finally grasp the link we have with, not only our

own, but with the energy of everyone, it becomes increasingly difficult to hurt another, disrespect them or judge them. The pain we inflict on another we will feel within, as if it’s our own pain. The disrespect, the taking from another that which is theirs, the judgement we make, we will feel it deep within. It is beginning to happen all around us; those that have experienced loss at the hands of another are now seeking to forgive rather than seek revenge, because they know that forgiveness will set them free. They will still feel the pain of loss but will be free of the turmoil that seeking revenge brings. It frees the mind to know better and when we know better, we do better.

“Once we remember as an adult, we will never forget again.” We so easily forget the mystery of life we knew as children. Everything was a new adventure, yet as adults we drown in the continual round of trying to make ends meet and to fit in. We forget that the mystery ever existed until these reminders begin to reawaken our memories. Once we remember as an adult, we will never forget again. We will begin to see these events more clearly and recognise them for what they are – a simple reminder - and we begin to reactivate our dreams and aspirations. We look for the mystery with excitement and expectation and begin to dream wider. We realise it’s time to take a stand for our own truth and assess what we truly believe about ourselves and life in general. We embrace a new vision and cultivate it until it is part of our life – it becomes our life. Finally, we become proud of who we are and what we stand for in every aspect of our life.

Discovering Ayurveda By Liesl Horne

Glorious days of summer As we head into summer here in Australia, from an Ayurvedic perspective it is time to prepare for ‘Pitta season.’ Each of the seasons has a special relationship to the elements and, just as Pitta dosha is related to fire, so too is the heat of the summer season. The fire element naturally increases during summer bringing more heat, dryness and lightness to our environment and to our own mind-body constitution. All of the doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, have their own particular attributes or qualities, which they share with the seasons. Pitta dosha has the elements of fire and water, which provide the qualities of being hot, light, dry, mobile, sharp and penetrating. Summer is also related to these same qualities. Whilst most of us welcome the warmer weather and time spent outdoors, those with mainly Pitta dosha in their constitution can find the long hot days of summer

44

Supernal Magazine

overly heating for their nature. With awareness we can manage our Pitta dosha through the principle of ‘like increases like’ and that the opposite decreases. Pitta dosha is associated with all transformative processes in the mind and body governing digestion, temperature and all metabolic functioning. If Pitta is your primary dosha, you will tend to be of medium build, well-

toned and have an angular, athletic figure. There is a warm under tone to your skin and hair and you can be prone to being sensitive to the sun. You generally feel hot and often thirsty, with a need to stay hydrated frequently. If you are hungry even for a short time you will start to feel agitated! “…Pitta dosha in their constitution can find the long hot days of summer overly heating for their nature.”

Pitta types are blessed with feeling exhilarated, motivated and enthusiastic. They are natural leaders, healthily competitive and

health and wellbeing can easily inspire all of those around them to join in the activity and fun! Planning is a pleasure not a chore, as it helps you to work towards your goals and to achieve your clear vision of what you set out to achieve. If Pitta becomes imbalanced through an excess of fiery type qualities such as sharp, overheating foods that are pungent sour or salty, or through suppressing your emotions during stressful situations, you can easily find yourself experiencing the accumulating heat of Pitta type symptoms. Some of these include burning skin conditions, rashes, sensitive, irritated eyes, acid indigestion and bouts of diarrhoea. You may find yourself feeling agitated or reactive, impatient, short tempered and generally hot headed.

Take some time to prepare meals ahead of time so that you eat the foods that are balancing for you. Focus on fresh and vibrant salads, light soups, delicious smoothies with light, soothing and cooling qualities. Stay away from overly heating, processed or acidic foods. “Enjoy a fresh fruit platter using sweet and cooling summer melons.”

Include herbs and cooling spices to your menu plan. These can include coriander, dill, fennel cumin, cinnamon, turmeric, parsley, mint and basil. Treat yourself to refreshing herbal teas that are also convenient to take with you when you’re on the go: Fennel and peppermint tea:

You can help to manage these symptoms and your dosha by introducing the opposite qualities into your lifestyle and diet.

Crush a teaspoon of dried fennel seeds and steep in a large cup of boiled water using a tea strainer. Add one or two peppermint leaves to your brew. You can also use half a teaspoon of dried and crushed coriander seeds.

Here are some simple ways to help you to manage your Pitta dosha through summer:

Stay hydrated and cooled with chamomile, coriander and fennel tea:

Keep your fridge well stocked with cooling foods:

1/4 teaspoon of dried chamomile leaves, 1/4 teaspoon of coriander seeds and the same of fennel seeds, steep in a medium sized teapot for five minutes. Strain before drinking.

Enjoy a fresh fruit platter using sweet and cooling summer melons. Try adding cucumber slices and mint to your drinks for a refreshing pick me up! Growing cooling herbs such as mint, coriander, basil and aloe vera in your garden or in a pot, is a wonderfully convenient way to stay cool throughout the summer months. Aloe vera is very soothing when applied to the skin on hot summer days and is easy to grow. Reduce or avoid pungent herbs and spices along with foods that are sour, salty and pungent in taste as they will create heat in the body. Relax with a coconut oil Ayurvedic relaxation massage. Replenish your energy through resting, meditating, walking near water or consider joining a slow and nourishing Yin style yoga class. Choose clothes with cooling colours and natural fibres that allow your skin to breathe such as cotton and linen in subtle greens, blues, lilacs and cool shades of white. Enjoy all that the glorious days of summer bring! Healthy Seasonal Foods By Jane Offer

He althy Se asonal Foo ds Eating for the Season

As spring becomes warmer, the amazing colours of the seasonal fruit and vegetables available seem to be particularly vibrant which started me thinking of the life force of the plant itself and the nourishing bounty it produces. The variety available to us is vast these days where transportation is easy, so seasonal these days simply means that it’s the appropriate season somewhere in the world. Therefore, look to buy local produce from your own country to feed your body what it needs. Everything in nature is in balance and is necessary for our survival. Flowers bloom providing the nectar

46 Supernal Magazine

for bees to make honey for their survival and, in doing so, pollinate the plants we rely on for ours. Each plant is present on this planet with a particular use, purpose and health benefit; the gel in the Aloe plant is great for sunburn, for example, and coincidentally they are not found growing naturally in the colder countries as they are a succulent requiring warmth. When we begin to look at it in this way, it really makes you think. The African Violet (Saintpaulia) absorbs radiation given off by computers, so it’s great to keep one on your desk. The cactus that looks like Mickey Mouse ears, Opuntia microdasys, has the same ability. Weren’t they on the planet well before computers and radiation created by man? Yet here we are reaping the benefits of their natural makeup. By following this train of thought we can see that plants provide many types of nutrients that we require for good health. So how can we

use our fruit and veggies to maximise our health? Juicing is the obvious answer! “If you truly get in touch with a piece of carrot, you get in touch with the soil, the rain, the sunshine. You get in touch with Mother Earth and eating in such a way, you feel in touch with true life, your roots, and that is meditation.” - Thich Nhat Hanh Here are some recipes using seasonal produce and a blender to support specific areas of the body. It’s said that a healthy gut leads to a healthy body, so here is a recipe that helps to promote the production of the digestive enzymes that assist the absorption of nutrients. It will also restore electrolyte balance after a stomach upset and nurture healthy bacteria in the bowel. Delightful Digestion 1 banana 2 apricots ½ cup blueberries I peeled kiwi fruit 1 cup water 1 tbsp. wheat germ We often identify green as representing envy but

health and wellbeing in this case, green equals stressing less. We are all far too busy and can easily get overwhelmed especially in the lead up to Christmas and the holiday season, so try this relaxing Melatonin packed drink. It will help with stress, anxiety, insomnia and the resultant headaches. Stress Less ½ cup kale ½ cup spinach 2 sprigs parsley ½ cucumber ¼ peeled lemon I cup green grapes 1 cup coconut water 1 tbsp. flax seed To avoid buying a whole load of products for these drinks, here is one to promote an energy boost using some of the same ingredients already mentioned, but in a different mix. Honey has antibacterial properties and is a complex mix of unrefined natural sugars that boost performance but reduces muscle fatigue. With the inclusion of the honey, this recipe also boosts the immune system and promotes rapid recovery from injury. Energy Booster 2 bananas 3 cups kale 2 cups coconut water 1 tbsp flaxseeds ½ tbsp manuka honey

Finally, with the season for eating all the wrong foods nearly upon us, here is a great detox recipe. Again, it is green and contains chlorophyll, vitamin C and antioxidants which help the body to transform toxins into substances that are easily absorbed by water and therefore easily released from the body. It’s also high in fibre for that healthy gut.

Detox for summer ½ cucumber 2 stalks celery ½ cup spinach 4 sprigs parsley ¼ peeled lemon ½ cm ginger ½ cup natural yoghurt ½ cup coconut water Many of the above ingredients provide necessary Vitamins A, B6, B complex, C, E and K such as Manuka honey, the green veggies and all the fruit. Wheat germ, flaxseed, kiwi fruit and lemons offer dietary fibre as well as being loaded with minerals. Potassium, magnesium, manganese and zinc are also present even in the coconut water.

Oh, I almost forgot, here is a juice to aid memory! The avocado gives a creamy texture, the coconut water hydrates the brain and the mint and ginger give it a zing to keep you sharp.

Memory Generator 1 pear ½ avocado 2 cups spinach ¼ peeled lemon ½ cm ginger 3 sprigs of mint 2 cups coconut water Enjoy these recipes and experiment further. There are so many suitable ingredients that the scope is endless. You can manage pain, help fight major disease, improve mood and sleep patterns, support muscles, bone and teeth and, as we looked at last month, improve skin and hair. When we look after our structure it looks after us.

Understanding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder By Derran Heney RN Mental Health Professional

Trauma is defined as ‘the state or condition caused by a physical or emotional shock or any event that is stressful or emotionally upsetting’ (Cambridge Dictionary, 2019). Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can occur when a person has witnessed or experienced a trauma such as a serious car accident, which is actually statistically the leading cause of PTSD according to SANE Australia 2019, but also includes violence or serious personal threats, natural disasters or war. Exposure to trauma could be witnessing a serious event, being involved directly or even hearing about a serious event through the media. PTSD can also occur when persons are repeatedly exposed to details about a trauma over time. At least one in every four people

48

Supernal Magazine

who have experienced trauma also develops Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. One person in 12 in Australia will develop PTSD over the course of their lifetime (SANE Australia, 2019). Symptoms of PTSD can occur within three months or longer after exposure to the traumatic event. Diagnosis of PTSD is based on specific symptoms which last more than one month and persist for months to years (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, 2013). People who have a lived experience of PTSD have common experiences in relation to one or many of the following symptoms: • Inability to concentrate and retain information when distressed • The experience of flashbacks or nightmares • Intrusive and often negative thoughts and memories

• Lability, mood dysregulation and anxiety • Hypervigilance and hypersensitivity, particularly within situations that remind of the trauma • Avoidance of situations that remind of the trauma • Dissociation - feeling numb, detached, not consciously aware

When a person is experiencing a traumatic experience, neurochemicals flood the brain. This increases the stress response within the body and is linked to our survival operations. Operating in survival mode means a person is less likely to hold the level of attention to detail they usually would, due to overload and survival responses. People can also repress emotions and thoughts during traumatic experiences, which is why some recall traumas many years after the original

mental health event. Perhaps trauma experienced as a child may be recalled as an adult due to the repression of the memories and emotions or even the traumatic event itself. If you know someone who has a lived experience of trauma and who is struggling with symptoms of PTSD, you may notice they benefit from time, patience and understanding. You may notice that they are not functioning as well as they were before the trauma. You may observe they experience a number of strong negative emotions and intense feelings associated with trauma, which can be triggered by ordinary life events and conversations around them. They may have rapidly shifting emotional states from anger to sadness, or feel quite detached from themselves and others. They may avoid situations that remind them of the traumatic event, often isolating themselves. PTSD may get in the way of the enjoyment of life, create difficulty in maintaining employment and can cause considerable upheaval in relationships. A person experiencing these symptoms will probably Photo Credit: Pixabay

trauma and risk assessment and will gather information to assist and identify helpful details such as triggers, warning signs and useful strategies to adopt when feeling overwhelmed. The goals of therapy might be: • To identify and consider strategies that will help gain a sense of self control • To identify and give consideration to the grief and loss experienced with trauma • To gain a sense of trust that was reduced since the trauma

to get assistance. Often a general practitioner is the first professional contact and this is a great place to start. There are medications that can assist to help with mood, anxiety or sleep related symptoms and a GP can recommend a referral for long term psychotherapeutic support. The building of trust is essential when it has been broken due to trauma. It can take time to rebuild with those who have been traumatised; usually long-term therapy with a specialised trauma therapist is beneficial to an individual.

• To empower the individual to feel more in control in their recovery

With time and support, PTSD symptoms can improve significantly and bring relief to an individual, paving the way to reclaim their peace of mind. If you need further assistance or are worried about someone, make a call!

the

mentalist A Boy’s Hero Children have many role models while growing up; their parents, older siblings or friends and one of the most influential, the old ‘Time Vampire’ commonly known as the TV.

Now, considering how our brains filter information, we can say to a certain extent fictional movies can influence us but, by and large, our brain picks up that it is only a fiction on some level. The most influential people on TV are the real people, the ones not playing a character, that are simply themselves. This is a large field; sports presenters and celebrities, news presenters, talk show and lifestyle show hosts and guests and, to a certain extent, the good old soap opera, supposedly portraying a dramatised

50

version of real life. Not to forget the most influential, the ‘reality’ show stars. Although the reality show is more of recent genre and we will touch on this later. It could be said that sitcoms could come under this field, as well as many comedy shows featuring characters playing a version of themselves. However, these versions are largely a caricature of their behaviour and vernacular and exaggerated, so let’s put them in the fictional section. Now quite obviously times change and each generation has its own unique flavour. It could be said that TV shows reflect the current trends and social standards, though in turn, they also influence those trends and standards.

This could be a wonderful cycle if it was focused on the positive, but unfortunately, drama sells and the cycle focuses on the negative. As a child growing up in Australia in the seventies and eighties (showing my age now), the presenters on the ‘box’ were always immaculately dressed, well-articulated, with beautiful speaking voices and (regardless of what they may or may not have been like in their personal lives) portrayed high levels of moral, ethical and social standards. “Now quite obviously times change and each generation has its own unique flavour.” I personally remember a clear turning point in the quality of role models on TV. It was in the early 1990’s on a lifestyle show filled with tips on how to spruce up your home, garden and cooking skills. A new presenter was

mental health introduced to the line-up of presenters, all specialising in their own fields of DIY. He was a young man full of excitement and in fact quite likeable, but he spoke like he must have struggled to finish grade three English. “The psychological impact to the participants in these ‘experiments’ is dire.” I get it, he was the tradie, the everyday, common man. He may not have had the best education or done any public speaking, he may not have taken elocution lessons like so many other presenters did, but as I said, he was young and likeable and all of a sudden it was acceptable to speak like a wharfie at mixed social events. He may not have been the first, but this certainly led to a change of presentational styles on TV, which in turn, heralded a change in society’s behaviour. Then came the explosion of what we call ‘reality’ TV. If you believe that these shows are not planned and partially scripted, if you believe that the producers don’t search for a particular personality type and then psychologically manipulate them into drama, pitting them against each other, Photo Credit: Pixabay

then I am sorry, but you are blind.

their own children who then model their parents.

What do these reality stars teach us? That it is okay to lie, cheat and manipulate. That it is ok to marry someone you have not yet met, then swap partners. That it is ok to treat our fellow humans like dirt!

Even if we switch off our TV’s, our social networks are filled with this toxic influence and yes, social networks are an added factor and addiction as well. So what is the answer?

The psychological impact to the participants in these ‘experiments’ is dire. They come away thinking they are celebrities and what for? For being a poor human being. On top of that, society looks up to these so called celebrities and emulates their behaviour. No wonder aggressive and violent behaviour is on the rise, not to mention anxiety and depression. To top it off, we now have a generation of young people whose lives are a shambles because they think this is the acceptable way to treat others. Young parents who pass on these poor belief systems and behaviours to

“Lift your fellow humans up and you also will rise.” Be selective in what you watch, create your own reality from your own focus. Make a conscious choice to focus on the positive and be a role model to your children as well. Be aware that not all reality shows are what their name claims. Life is not a competition where we treat others like dirt to get ahead. Lift your fellow humans up and you also will rise. ESPecially best wishes The Mentalist Jason D. Varga

Over the Rainbow We Are Not All Merry At Christmas by Celeste de Vis The Christmas/holiday season is generally a time when family and friends make a concerted effort to come together and celebrate. It’s a time when kin, who may not be in regular contact, get an opportunity to ‘catch up’ until the following year. My family is small, literally just me, my daughter and foster daughter. My biological family are scattered across the country, therefore we have always been creative on Christmas Day. We love to celebrate. We love people! So, prior to 2015, we chose to volunteer on December 25th. Charlotte, Renae and I have visited the elderly in nursing homes, who have no visitors on Christmas Day, we have served Christmas lunch to people living on the streets at a Frankston Community House and we have been ‘people greeters’ at our local free Christmas Day luncheon. These roles gave us joy and an opportunity to connect with and share the spirit of Christmas with others. These little tasks made a huge difference to our day, creating fond memories, but what if you are someone that could not, for

52

Supernal Magazine

whatever reason, undertake such a role? What if you already know that you will be alone on Christmas Day because family and friends don’t want to see you and you have no support network to celebrate with you?

“Social media, television and marketing saturate our eyes, ears and minds about how Christmas Day should look to everyone, but unfortunately; it is not everyone’s reality.” Once upon a time, I would have thought that unbelievable; however since joining the Rainbow Community I have learnt that the ‘season to be jolly’ can be a truly heartbreaking season. The Christmas season has caused great pain for many LGBTQIA+ people. Beautiful human beings, who have bravely come out to their family and friends, who have been faced with discrimination, rejection, and excommunicated from family events.

There are some blessed individuals, who have come out to their family and peers and have been met with support, encouragement and love; however many others, have had traumatic experiences. One only has to look at the suicide statistics of mental health data to know that the Christmas season can exacerbate feelings of isolation, worthlessness and depression. Look at department stores who display their festive season stock, from as early as October. Imagine being constantly reminded when you enter a store, that you are once again the person who ‘won’t have a merry Christmas’ and ‘Joy to the World’ is far from your own world. The theme of the festive season is overwhelmingly portrayed as an experience that is closely connected to people whom you love. Social media, television and marketing saturate our eyes, ears and minds about how Christmas Day should look to everyone, but unfortunately, it’s not everyone’s reality.

LGBTQI+

The National LGBTI Health Alliance (2016) states that: Compared to the general population, LGBTI people are more likely to attempt suicide in their lifetime, specifically: • LGBTI young people aged 16 to 27 are five times more likely • Transgender people aged 18 and over are nearly eleven times more likely • People with an Intersex variation aged 16 and over are nearly six times more likely • LGBTI young people who experience abuse and harassment are even more likely to attempt suicide. So what can we do to support those in our LGBTQIA+ community over these next few months? Firstly it depends on one’s age. If you are a parent/ carer of a young person who has come out or transitioned, the power and control over how the Christmas celebration will look, will fall in the hands of the adult/s. If you are of mature age, disconnected from family and you know that you will be alone, take heart, there are many opportunities to spend time with inclusive and affirming peers within the rainbow community.

as a platform to engage and connect with our community over the festive season. Just last year, the following is a sample of events took place: • Queer Summer Time picnic at Edinburgh Gardens (2nd week of December) • Queerspace Breakfast in the Park (Flagstaff Gardens) on Christmas Day • Melbourne Inclusive Church. (Christmas BBQ celebration) • Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus Carols If you are not connected to LGBTQIA+ social and support groups, start looking. Event dates will be announced soon. I have attended three Christmas/holiday celebrations through my social group membership, and of those, my favourite was the Rainbow Families Christmas Disco.

Finally, I would like to thank my wonderful cousin Jen and her fabulous husband Aspie, who entered our lives as close kin soon after Charlotte came out. Spending Christmas with you every year has been one of the most joyful experiences ever! My baby girls really look forward to making memories with you each year - especially the water fights!

Distraction or Inspiration?

One of the things that business owners can struggle with is distraction. In fact, I think that most of us can say that we’ve experienced this on at least one occasion - and that’s okay. Distraction only becomes a problem when it begins to impede your ability to get things done. by Brooklyn Storme PhD At the moment, I’m on the tail end of launching my 90 day coaching program. I’ve been focussed on everything I have needed to do to support the launch. My attention has been on the planning, execution and review of all of the steps involved with opening and closing the doors to a program. I implemented a new approach this time around and the learning curve was enormous. Luckily, I love learning! So, I was totally absorbed in the process, until Sunday. On Sunday, I was home watching

54

Supernal Magazine

Netflix (if you haven’t seen Between Two Ferns, I highly recommend it!) when out of the blue, I was struck with an idea that I felt compelled to take urgent action on.

“Distraction really only becomes a problem when it begins to impede your ability to get things done.” Literally jumping up off the chair and running out into the kitchen to grab the first piece of scrap paper I could find and a pen, I hurriedly began writing. The pen just kept moving, as if my hand

had a mind of its own. It was as if I wasn’t consciously writing – that someone was writing and I was watching. The energy was exciting! After I put the pen down, I looked over what I’d written and immediately felt like dancing (so I did!). It was pure, unadulterated joy that flowed through me. I knew that what I’d drafted would be able to help so many business owners and I was so grateful for the inspiration! After calming down, I returned to Netflix but I couldn’t get this new idea out of my mind. It continued

business to pull on my attention and I continued to give in. That night, I went to sleep thinking about it and the next morning, I woke up thinking about it. As I was driving to work yesterday, I realised I’d not been focused on my launch! Suddenly ego kicked in and you can imagine what I mean when I share that fear-based thoughts raced through me. Thoughts like, ‘Now you’ll not enrol more clients’, ‘Why didn’t you stay focused?’, ‘If only you’d put that idea on the backburner’ and so on. I began to experience every one of those negative, spiralling thoughts.

“Inspiration on the other hand, is when you experience a sudden idea from seemingly nowhere and the idea is so powerful that it compels you to action.” As soon as I arrived at the office, I contacted my virtual assistant because I knew someone needed to take this off my plate and that she’d be the perfect one to help, as she shares my business vision. She was delighted to receive the task and I was then able to get back to the business of the launch.

protected from the hurt or suffering associated with the reality that we don’t know how to get from point A to point B.

“Inspired action is private, personal and as unique as your fingerprint.” Inspiration on the other hand, is when you experience a sudden idea from seemingly nowhere and the idea is so powerful that it compels you to action. Even if you attempted to put it aside, your mind would keep pulling your attention toward it. Inspired action is private, personal and as unique as your fingerprint. No one else will experience the same download from the Universe as you and when you recognise inspiration, it’s as if part of your soul is coming home. You just know you have to act on it and so you do! If you are feeling overwhelmed at work, one way

to distinguish between distraction and inspiration is to ask yourself, “Can I let this go now and come back to it later? (Urgency).” If you answer ‘no’, then chances are you are feeling inspired, so act from that place. You could ask, “Am I doing all of this busy work as a way of avoiding something?” If so, that probably means you are in distraction mode.

“The psychologist in me feels that distraction is avoidance masked as busywork.” This can be the result of a disconnect between knowing where you need to get to (your Point B) and not knowing how to get there. If this is the case for you, ask yourself how you could find out. Once you have the steps, the work will feel easier and you’ll reach your point B. Happy manifesting! Dr Brooklyn Storme

So, what’s happened here is actually okay and here’s why. The psychologist in me feels that distraction is avoidance masked as busywork. It’s a coping mechanism that we develop along the way, to keep our ego feeling nice and safe,

Divine Time Radiance in Humility We have entered the fifth moon of the new cycle. The peacock moon of radiance. The overtone state of vitality and personal empowerment. How can I immerse myself in the essence of personal empowerment, yet at the same time remain complete within the vibration of humility? Is my desire to be a shining light too much for others to deal with? Will they think I ought to ‘get over myself’? I find myself wondering and wandering, drawn by the magnetic energy of the monkey wavespell to see further than what is expected and accepted by a society under a spell of rules that seem to contradict and control. An illusion of intelligence without wisdom, sight without vision and awareness without understanding, which continues to control education, media, conversation and behaviour. We are encouraged to be ‘self-empowered’, but

this works only as long as we remain entrenched in the matrix of acceptability and don’t rattle the chains or rock the boat of the establishment further than its illusory power can justify. “We have been agreeing to a routine of schedule and in service to a very old hierarchy of archaic vision.” It is okay to talk about it and pretend, but doesn’t really rock on and roll out of the square or the box of rules that need to be checked and ticked off on a daily basis. We have been agreeing to a routine of schedule and are in service to a very old hierarchy of archaic vision. This is held in place by a countenance and belief systems. This way of living is fraudulent to honouring the divine self and the agenda is to keep us distant from feeling we deserve to share in the power of grace and be akin to the experience of what it truly means to shine.

October gave us a rock to climb and a line in the sand to step over. November will push and pull you every which way and present a doorway that from the outside appears like a psychedelic trip down a corridor. This may well shake you up and activate the galactic and cellular memories that have been hidden within the human race since we first seeded and began. The secrets of the universe and eternity are written like a magna-carta within each of us. The cycle of the kin calendar is encouraging you to

divine guidance and to extend this quality of equality to others. Knowledge that is initiated through the day dreaming and meditation you have been working on, gives you the realisation and satisfaction that only real, bona-fide humility can give. It is the lore of divine love which begins with the self and extends outwardly like the tail of the peacock warming the heart, mind and body. You sense a rhythm begin within your life that feels a little like enlightenment. It is possible without a Bodhi tree. In fact, you are the Bodhi tree and you are navigating your way to the evolution of superhuman intelligence and revelation. decide to do some day dreaming and not much else. It is in the dreaming that reality is changed and recreated. Day dreaming is a personal power that no one else can control and when you ‘dare to dream’, then those dreams can come true. This is the power and resonance of the law of attraction. “Be colourful, enthusiastic, and enjoy yourself.” This is perfect now with the magnetic alignment of magic and radiance working for you. You are here to be self-empowered Photo Credit: ShirleySienna

This is real and true, just imagine it. The day dreaming thoughts and imagery you extend outwardly are now seeds of light, streaming across the earth plane creating a vista of extraordinary proportions. A new world is being created by the delight you feel as you take your time and your mind on a journey of radiance and rhythm. This is beyond the restriction of regulation and rulebooks and is the releasing of the yolk of slavery and instead holds only to the joy you feel.

are connected by invisible threads of star matter from whence we came and as often said, each of us are thoughts of greater consciousness. The greatest story never told is coming together nicely and we are developing at a rate now that allows this dreaming to be seen, felt, heard and shared as a multiplex of beings experience trillions and zillions of situations at one time felt on a level of greater self and unity consciousness. The secrets of the universe and eternity are written like a magna-carta within each of us.” We as individual people must continue to endeavour to imagine this, for as humans living in the 3rd dimension, we can work only on our own vibration. Please remember that your personal radiance and rhythmic frequency is a part of the whole, which without would leave a hole in the weave. The web of life is forming this weaving at a great rate. Be colourful, enthusiastic, and enjoy yourself. In Lak’ech ala’ kin ShirleySienna

Numerology by ShirleySienna

Eleven is the number of transition, of change, of conundrum, yin-yang masculine/feminine and illumination. What can I say; I don’t want to spoil your fun. 11, they say, I see 11. I see 11:11. I see it again, and again. Oh my here’s more 11! So, what exactly does it mean? Why does it repeat itself and appeal to so many as a number of synchronicity and so much personal and individual importance? What is the value of 11? Eleven certainly is dominant by nature and a force to be reckoned with. It holds secrets that unless you begin to see past the great illusory nature of its tendance and ability to incite a spiritual excitement, you may never see the truth of it. So it will repeat and repeat and ‘oh dear,’ it will repeat itself. So what are you seeing? Why are you seeing it? And what should you do about it, if anything. Well, that is the nature of the question and the nature of 11. So, I’ll leave you to work it out for yourself and then the joy of illuminative frequency, possibility and optional adjustment of circumstance really begins.
