Environmental Warriors As I pen this Ed’s Word, the 2019 Climate Summit is kicking off in Madrid. There has been a lot of press, both good and bad, about what is going on in the world in regard to climate change and the many challenges it’s creating. We, as a world population, can only hope that our leaders, as voted by us, can start doing more to look after this planet! “We, as a world population, can only hope that our leaders, as voted by us, can start doing more to look after this planet!”

In this issue, we are looking at some phenomenal people and projects that are working to keep this planet alive and well. We have an interview with Damon Gameau regarding his documentary 2040. The documentary explores what the future could look like by 2040, if we

embraced the best solutions already available to us. Damon’s interview is absolutely fascinating to read. Freya has penned two beautiful stories regarding the rare Tuart tree reforestation project in Western Australia and the Green Sakthi project; both make for optimistic reading. The need for reforestation is absolutely critical to this planet’s survival in my view. Of course, there’s a lot more to dealing with the current environmental issues than just trees! “I had no idea we get killer whales visiting our bays.”

ShirleySienna and I met with Jeff Weir and Jenny Pallant from the Dolphin Research Institute based in Hastings, Westernport Bay in Victoria. We both walked away stunned by what we learnt about our bays and the dolphins and whales that live in and frequent this space. I had no idea we get killer whales visiting our bays.

December 2019 non-psychical worlds in a way that I never have before. I will state though, that the concepts have been at the back of my mind for a long time. Now it’s just more tangible. Freya was a firm and knowing teacher who shared her learning in a true story teller’s way. Her way of teaching resonated with me and, in all honesty, I walked away from there still downloading. There have been several conversations with Freya about experiences in both worlds since that have created plenty of processing.

The importance of their work cannot be understated. I encourage all Melburnians to get behind this ongoing project and start treating our bays as our back yards. Last month, we ran stories about shamanism and Freya, one of our WA contributors, introduced us to Raym Richards and Crystal Dreaming. I was intrigued about the whole process and, knowing that Freya was running a Crystal Dreaming Initiation course, I put it out to the Universe to make it happen. Suddenly my weekend was freed up (four days really), I got a leave pass from home and I was flooded with extra work to cover costs. So, with a basic understanding of the initiation process, I jumped a bomber to Perth before experiencing the most intense, mind-blowing initiation ever. It was the toughest three days of learning I have ever done and I’ve done a few. It opened my mind to see the physical and Photo Credit: Dolphins - Dolphin Research Institute, Tuart Tree – Freya Sampson

I met some gorgeous people during the three days and experienced connections on a heart level that simply blew me away. I’m looking forward to continuing my journey in 2020. I am never amazed at how this universe we live in works! I hope you enjoy the read and as always have a Supernal month and a safe and merry Christmas or festive season!

SUPERNAL NEWS

December 2019

2019 concludes a decade of exceptional weather As the theme of this issue is the environment, we are sharing an extract from the Madrid Climate Summit. There are links below and it makes for fascinating reading. The year 2019 concludes a decade of exceptional global heat, retreating ice and record sea levels, driven by greenhouse gases from human activities. Average temperatures for the five-year (2015-2019) and tenyear (2010-2019) periods are almost certain to be the highest on record. 2019 is on course to be the second or third warmest recorded year, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The WMO provisional statement on the State of the Global Climate, says that the global average temperature in 2019 (January to October) was about 1.1 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial period. Concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere hit a record level of 407.8 parts per million in 2018 and continued to rise in 2019. CO2 lasts in the atmosphere for centuries and in the ocean for even longer, thus locking in climate change. The ocean, which acts as a buffer by absorbing heat and carbon dioxide, is paying a heavy price. Ocean heat is at record levels and there have been widespread marine heatwaves. Sea water is 26 per cent more acidic than at the start of the industrial era. Vital marine ecosystems are being degraded. “If we do not take urgent climate action now, then we are heading for a temperature increase of more than 3°C by the end of the century, with ever more harmful impacts on human wellbeing,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. “We are nowhere near on track to meet the Paris Agreement target.” “On a day-to-day basis, the impacts of climate change play out through extreme and ‘abnormal’ weather. And, once again in 2019, weather and climate related risks hit hard. Heatwaves and floods which used to be ‘once in a century’ events are becoming more regular occurrences. Countries ranging from the Bahamas to Japan to Mozambique suffered the effect of devastating tropical cyclones. Wildfires swept through the Arctic and Australia,” said Mr Taalas. The report devotes an extensive section to weather and climate impacts on human health, food security, migration, ecosystems and marine life. This is based on input from a wide variety of United Nations partners. There are copies of this full report available from the WMO – HERE or watch the video HERE. Featured Products Local Shultz Milk Saves Plastic! by Grace Drake (Work Experience Student) In Australia, about two billion 1litre plastic bottles are thrown into landfill every year. Shultz Organic Dairy has decided not to contribute to that large number by supplying reusable, refillable glass milk bottles. They have been farming organically since 1972 and are based just south-west of Victoria in the quaint country town of Timboon. In 2017, Shultz Milk began selling milk in their glass bottles through farmers markets. These bottles and recycling practices became extremely popular. This popularity lead to the glass bottles being used in farmers markets, as well as in restaurants, cafes, retail stores and grocers throughout NSW, ACT, SA, WA, Tasmania and Victoria. There is a substantial environmental impact with each glass bottle sold saving approximately 40g of plastic or 120kg per week (across 3,000 bottles). Over a year, that’s 6240kg of plastic not going into the ground! Head to https://schulzorganicdairy.com.au/ to find out more about their story or where you can help support them and the environment.

Discovering Ayurveda By Liesl Horne

The Joy of Moderation can be easier than you think… The excitement of meeting up with friends and family, indulging in platters of tempting food, celebratory drinks and good conversation are all part of the festive celebrations that abound for many at this time of year. Moderation is a mindset that often gets left behind at the front door. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, indulging in sugary treats, salty food and tempting snacks, all of which provide a temporary sense of pleasure. This is a time of the year that seems to pull us away from our usual routines – daily exercise, healthy meal preparation and catching up on our rest and sleep. By understanding what is happening at a deeper level, we can open the door to a new way of being that embraces the festive season without the feeling of guilt and overload that leaves us in a slump the next day. What effects does overindulging have on our wellbeing from an Ayurvedic perspective?

Before you attend your next social gathering, factor in time to visualise how you want to feel about yourself the next day. Do you want to feel fresh, vibrant and ready to embrace the day’s activities without the feeling of toxic overload? Here are some ways to consider staying on track:

Vata: too much spicy, bitter, dry, overly salty food such as crisps, crackers, relishes and salsas. Pitta: too much sour, salty and spicy food – hot dips, pickles and fried finger food.

Be mindful of the festive foods that accumulate your dosha:

Kapha: too much rich, heavy, cold and sweet food – decadent cheeses, creamy dips and deserts. Look for freshly prepared seasonal options. Swap the alcohol for digestive friendly alternatives: a squeeze of cranberry juice, fresh lime juice or ginger juice added to sparkling soda water. “Restore yourself with a massage to reward your efforts.”

Make ginger tea to keep your Agni glowing. Ginger has the benefits of being anti-inflammatory, antinausea and helps to cleanse toxins.

Holistic & Healing Arts

The Naked Shaman Colour Therapy for the Holidays By Joti Gore The holidays can be a joyous time of celebrating family, friends and Christ, or a tumultuous cacophony of emotions like sadness, grief and despair. There are many ways to shift from the challenges of darkness to a positive experience through the holidays. Community events, music, exercise, yoga, meditation, nature and alternative therapies are some of the ways to do more than cope through the holidays. One alternative therapy is chromotherapy, often known as colour therapy. Colour therapy is considered a pseudoscience because it has not been peer-reviewed.

12

Supernal Magazine

However, it is believed that colour can have a profound impact on how we feel, think, express ourselves and interact. Colour is a form of frequency and frequency is generally measured in Hertz, which are units of cycles per second. Colour is the frequency of visible light, and it ranges from 430 trillion Hertz (which is red) to 750 trillion Hertz (which is violet). Waves can also go beyond and below those frequencies, but they’re not visible to the human eye. As a non-invasive modality, the colour of walls, sheets, workspace and clothing can affect us emotionally, physically, mentally, psychosocially and energetically. According to evidencebased Complementary and Alternative Medicine, in The Canon of Medicine, Avicenna, the Persian father of modern medicine from the Islamic Golden Age, wrote that colour is an observable symptom of disease. He also developed a chart that related colour to the temperature and physical condition of the body. His view was that red moved the blood, blue or white cooled it and yellow reduced muscular pain and inflammation. Just before the turn of the century, American Civil War General, Augustus Pleasonton, led his own

experiments and published The Influence Of The Blue Ray Of The Sunlight And Of The Blue Color Of The Sky. It showed how the colour blue can improve the growth of crops and livestock and can help heal diseases in humans. These experiments led to scientists Dr Seth Pancoast and Edwin Dwight Babbitt to conduct experiments and to write Blue and Red Light; or, Light and Its Rays as Medicine. Dinshah Ghadiali, author of 1933’s The Spectro Chromemetry Encyclopaedia, a work on colour therapy, stated that he had discovered why and how the different coloured rays have various therapeutic effects on organisms. He believed that colours represent chemical potencies in higher octaves of vibration and, for each organism and system of the body, there is a particular colour that stimulates and another that inhibits the work of that organ or system. In yoga and Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed that the body has seven energy centres called chakras or wheels situated along the spine. Each of these energy centres has a colour that correlate to specific emotions and areas of the physical body.

health and wellbeing Check out the emotional vibrational frequency chart.

It is believed that colour can stimulate or have a profound effect on these emotions and areas of the body. According to this theory, colour can bring the imbalances manifested in physical diseases into balance, restoration and eventually healing. Red resonates to the base of the spine attributed to survival and grounding. Orange

connects to the sexual organs and represents creativity, sexuality and where one fits into a relationship with household and community. Yellow is located in the solar plexus, the emotional centre. The heart cavity is green and deals with matters of the heart and sense of responsibility. The throat is blue and is associated with communication and truth. Indigo is between the eyebrows is called the third eye and is the place of intuition, understanding and forgiveness. At the top of the head or crown, violet is the place of thoughts and connection with energy outside of ourselves, which arguably is the Divine Connection centre. It is believed the rare moment that these energy centres are all in balance is wellness, bliss, peace and divine revelation. What are some of the ways to use this concept to create balance through the holidays?

Reflections: Jane Offer

Past, present and future

Once again, I was in a café minding my own business when a heated discussion ensued on the next table. Not only could I hear the conversation clearly, so could the rest of the customers, but they carried on unaware of the interest they were promoting. The gist of their grievances was that one was upset as the other continued to behave in a particular way, despite being told over a long period that it was disrespectful and hurtful. The other did not accept this and kept saying that ‘that was then, and this is now, so the past is irrelevant’. The details of their issue are unimportant, but that one statement caught my attention. Surely the past is the source of our learning? It

14

Supernal Magazine

shows us that we can take a different tack when things don’t work out as we hope. Also, whilst it is not wise to dwell on past situations as great levels of fear can hide there, we can take the knowledge gained and improve our lives. Simply by grasping that concept and deciding ‘That did not work, how can we use that to our advantage?’ The

whole situation could have been changed completely, creating a harmonious path for the couple. It sounds an easy idea and it is, when emotions are calm – we use it every day. Take

driving, for example. When we got into the car for our first driving lesson, we had no idea how to operate it. Parking, keeping to the speed, reversing, indicating and so on, all represented areas where we had to learn. We got it wrong many times, but in the process, we learned how to get it right. Now each time we drive, it is an automatic ‘knowing’, a habit that we have developed based on our many mistakes. We dip into the past to enable us today and set us up for tomorrow. Of course, with advances in Quantum Science, unheard of in my school days, there is a theory called fractal time where every event is happening concurrently. There is no past or future, it is all happening in this moment. Whilst I partly understand the concept, I struggle with the implications of this in my life. In fact, it is in the same category for me

health and wellbeing as 3D printing which, in the time of our forebears, would have been termed as ‘the work of the devil’, along with everything else that they didn’t understand. “…that was then, and this is now…” How could the fractal time theory help our warring couple? Maybe for the one to look closely at the outcomes of their past behaviour, identify the upset it caused the other and deciding to develop a different approach. With so much experience, there is plenty of evidence of what works and what does not. The other could release the attachment to the hurts from the past and work together to create an improved version for the future. “For him, the word represented his experience…” Words used are the key here. I once had a client who consistently used the word ‘persecuted’; he felt persecuted by his family. The word was odd to me and not one I had ever used. Finally, I discovered that he was Polish and a young man when the Russians invaded his homeland. He witnessed persecution firsthand

- his parents and sisters were shot before his eyes and he was forced to join the Russian army to rule his own people. For him, the word represented his experience, which he found difficult to release. For me, it was simply a word I read with no emotional attachment to the action. This happens constantly in our conversations: a word is spoken; we attach to it and it leads to hurt feelings. We often find that we are in the company of people with whom we have experienced tense situations in the past. We may have done or said something that inadvertently pressed their buttons or vice versa. None of us is perfect after all! Are they trying to get at us or are they just using words that do not affect them but have a great impact on us? Do they know that? Probably not.

By choosing to set ourselves free from any expectation of them ‘kicking off’ or to look for insults, we remain in control of our emotions. We can learn from past experience that maybe they are not always careful with the words they use, but we can look at why those words upset us. Use them as a tool for learning about ourselves. So, let’s explore the true meaning of living in the now, by bringing past information together into the present to create the perfect moment moment by moment! Jane Offer

This holiday season can be a great time to practise the concept of creating anew.

Paramahansa Yoganananda By Varij Varidium

Capricorn

“Capricorn then, is pre-eminently the sign of spiritual attainment …”

Capricorn: Sign of hard work and spiritual mastery Ruled by Saturn, the planet variously known as the Lord of Karma, the Grim Reaper and old Father Time, Capricorns tend to get bad press in popular astrology. Although universally acknowledged to be hard working, conscientious, and responsible, they also have a reputation for being hard, calculating and ruthless, judgmental, dutiful and guilt ridden, overly serious, controlling and materialistic. In short, very unspiritual.

16

Supernal Magazine

But what about Capricorn spiritual masters Ramana Maharshi, Paramahansa Yogananda, Swami Vivekananda, and Gurdjieff, or evolved souls like Kahil Gibran, Albert Schweizer and Martin Luther King, or twentieth century sages Alan Watts, John Lilly and Ken Keyes, not to mention Jesus, whose heartfelt cry “Father, why hast thou forsaken me?” is an all too common Capricorn question? Capricorn then, is preeminently the sign of spiritual attainment, which, like worldly achievement, requires dedication, discipline and plain hard work, qualities Capricorns have in abundance. Gurdjieff’s emphasis on ‘The Work’ is archetypical. When he says, “I love him

who loves work,” he is giving voice to the enduring sentiment of patriarchal authority heard through the ages. Another typical quote on the same theme gives the pure Capricorn taste: “There is only self-initiation, which is acquired by constant effort. It is impossible to give to a man anything that could become his own without effort on his part.” “Before enlightenment chopping wood, carrying water; after enlightenment chopping wood, carrying water.” – Zen Aphorism Zen Buddhism too, it seems to me, has a strongly Capricornian flavour, ruthlessly applying the Zen stick to any tendencies to romanticised spiritual glamour. This flavour is captured in the classic aphorism quoted above, yet even more stripped back to the bare essentials is this one: “When hungry eat; when tired sleep.”

astrology

Ramana Maharishi

painter Paul Cezanne, writers Anton Chekhov, Rudyard Kipling, J.R Tolkien. Also, Henry Miller, author of Tropic of Capricorn, who embodied the lusty, Pan the goat god worshipping side of Capricorn, as did Elvis Presley and Australia’s first rock star Johnny O’Keefe.

“Still the question remains at what cost?” Capricorn is an earth sign and its animal is the mountain climbing goat. Correspondingly, Capricorn has a natural spiritual affinity with mountains and also deserts, places of harsh magnificence, where, far from the madding crowd, silence speaks and eternal verities are heard. Is it mere coincidence that all three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, had their birth in the deserts of the Middle East?

“So, I challenge you Capricorn to get real.” On a more worldly level, Capricorns are great mountain climbers who work long and hard to get to the top of their chosen field of endeavour. For example physicists Isaac Newton and Stephen Hawking, former Australian Prime Ministers John Curtin and Paul Keating, boxer Muhammed Ali, musician David Bowie,

Let us take it then, that Capricorns are good at achieving success and welldeserved public recognition. Still the question remains at what cost? Their personal lives may come to resemble a desert – dry and barren, devoid of love and pleasure. Doing it tough comes easy to Capricorn. And although they are prone to give out the message: “I don’t need you and I don’t want you to need me either”, inside they are just as needy as their opposite sign Cancer, maybe even more so. You would be too if you spent most of your life in self-denial. So I challenge you, Capricorn, to get real. Get your values straight before you live to regret it. Ask yourself: Are you working to live or living to work? Are you spending all your time making money and none making love? Life is about love – isn’t it? How rich is your love life? What shape is your marriage in? Or are you

single and lonely, trading sex for love. Sustaining a loving relationship, just as much as a successful career, requires a commitment of time, energy and yes, lots of hard work too. As the poet Rainer Maria Rilke so cogently put it: “For one human being to love another is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation.” Back to the spiritual side. The natural Capricorn path to self-realisation is via the way of negation, the via negativa. A celebrated summary of Buddhist teaching provides a suitably succinct formulation: “Suffering alone exists, but none who suffer / The deed there is, but no doer thereof / Nirvana is, but no one seeking it / The Path there is, but none who travel it.” Or, in the words of Ramana Maharshi: “There is neither creation nor destruction / Neither destiny nor free will / Neither path nor achievement / This is the final truth.”

ne hundred years of life to a Tuart tree is equivalent to 12 years as a human being. In Ludlow Western Australia (WA) exists the world’s only Native Tuart Forest. One hundred years ago, it spanned 110, 000 hectares and now less than 3000 hectares remain.

Freya Savitri Sampson / Custodian Eartheart

In the heart of the remaining forest grows a Tuart tree who is around 500 years old, affectionately referred to as ‘She’ because of her curvaceous trunk, likened to the hips and bust of a woman. It’s thought that this is the reason that she was left un-felled, her trunk being not straight enough was undesirable. An immensely tall being, in good health, very beautiful, she alone stands witness and testament to her brothers, sisters and her children, logged to near extinction. I wait to photograph and watch Evelyn Taylor, President of the *Ludlow Tuart Forest Restoration Group, walk towards this Tuart. Evelyn is dwarfed, appearing as a small dot standing beside this magnificent Tuart’s extraordinary height and girth. It strikes me, the kinship between them. Evelyn’s ever-watchful gaze critiqued the condition of the ground

feature below and the branches of this silent, ancient one. All around them is a sea of flowering Arum Lilies, their beauty undeniable, yet to the Australian Bush, this introduced species is a silent killer. Seeds, carried by birds, have spread throughout the waterways and the forest floor, all but destroying the 100s of species of native under-story.

Evelyn’s lifetime of appreciation of the forest lead to her current role. Evelyn married a forrester in the early 1960s and acted as his unpaid secretary, as expected by the Government of the time. They lived, worked and spent time in the forest, so Evelyn knew the forest intimately. Over the years, then decades, Evelyn watched changes in the forest, the logging’s continual impact and the infestation of noxious weeds. Evelyn said, “One day I realised that I could not

walk by, saying ‘Sorry’ to the forest anymore.” It was time to take action! In 2017, the matter of the Tuart Forest became paramount as Evelyn explained. “The people of Ludlow and surrounding areas were asked for submissions to the Federal Government regarding the forest. The Tuart Forest needed to be placed on the ‘Critically Endangered List’. “The many local people who had been trying to do something about the forest, were suddenly galvanised. Realising that this could be the opportunity they had been waiting for, where people would pay attention to the forest. A meeting was called, and twenty people gathered, focused on what it would take to restore the forest – a monumental task.

“Currently the team have taken on 180 hectares of forest, which was a pine plantation, cleared around twelve years ago. It now has had nearly 17,000 Tuart seedlings planted into it, during winter this year. Our community has grown, 500 members and 400 children from 58 schools have helped. We have 50,000 seedlings in the nursery, ready for planting next year.” To give perspective, remember the Indigenous Australian people had over 500 tribe/clan groups living within 300 plus territories

“A timeline of two weeks was given to the group to consider if they had the courage and the fortitude to undertake such a commitment and, on the second meeting, six more people came.” *LTFRG is a registered notfor-profit organisation, with a growing committee of skilled, dedicated people, working in consultation with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

around the country, spanning the continent we know as Australia. During tens of thousands of years, they cared for flora and fauna, which remained in excellent condition. The colonisation of Australia was in 1788, 4500km away, on the eastern side of Australia. However, it was in the 1830s in WA, that the Ludlow Tuart Forest logging began. Logging ceased in 1975. It had taken merely 145 years to decimate this unique forest to almost extinction. The Australian bush is often slow-growing. Evelyn shared, “The Tuart trees have a cycle and flower only every 5-7 years. The seeds on the trees are ripe now which is very fortunate, so that we will be gathering the very minimal amount which are available, over the next two weeks. We need seed for the 100,000 trees we’re planting over the next two years. “The trees have flowered strongly this year. There have been no fires in the forest since 1974 and none in the area we’re working in for 80 years. We encounter problems with an insect called a bud weevil, which enters the bud of the flower by chewing a small hole in the side. They eat the stamen, laying their eggs inside, then crawling up the

22

Supernal Magazine

stem and chewing it off. The bud falls on the ground, where the weevils grow. This year the forest floor was covered in the Tuart flower buds. The fires would reduce the number of bud weevils on the forest floor. “Tuart’s are thirty plus metres tall. We have to find trees in suitable positions, to get a cherry picker or a basket on the end of a long crane to collect the seed. There is a local company that has kindly donated these resources for this.” “Another problem faced is the overpopulation of kangaroos. A fire in the forest would cause the seeds on the forest floor to germinate and the kangaroos would normally eat the seedlings. Because the forest floor is covered in Arum Lilies, there is no undergrowth to feed the overpopulation of kangaroos which means they are ring barking the trees for food.” “There has been a 30-hectare fence installed around the planted area.

Reaching a certain height in five years, the new trees will no longer be bothered by the kangaroos. The fencing has been completed by prisoners from Bunbury Regional Prison, on day release in the PEP – Prisoner Employment Program. They are very skilled and are very enthusiastic about the project and have been extremely helpful in installing the rabbit/kangaroo proof fence. Without them, the cost would have been enormous. The cost of fencing materials alone is great.” The team have also helped with several projects, including planting/fertilising seedlings, cleaning up the Ludlow Settlement, re-roofing buildings. They have been an invaluable asset to the plans. “The Ludlow Settlement was 100 years old last year,” explained Evelyn. “The

feature intention is that the settlement becomes a tourism/ educational attraction, raising forest and historical awareness as a museum.” “The Settlement, a major mill for the sought-after Tuart hardwood, excellent for boat building, was close to the coast and easy to ship out from Busselton Jetty, to around the world. It was a significant export and really set the colony up.” “The settlement has many buildings, with a river running through it. The site was very sad looking when we started; now it’s looking better each week. We’ve removed the asbestos and cleaned up a lot. Some of the buildings are being restored and painted.”

very attractive to birds, who eat them and excrete them. The Government is unable to finance the removal of the Arum Lilies, however, is allowing the group access to do it. “There is a group who have fenced off and hand weeded a 19-hectare area of the Tuart Forest, called the Mining Forest, slightly north of Ludlow. It is absolutely magical.” “The LCDC group are into their 6th year of restoration. Currently, 180 species of indigenous under-story have regrown in that fenced area. I would guestimate with weeds, insect and animal pests controlled, that in 40 years, we’d have a forest to be proud of.”

“We have set up a landscaping committee, who will be working on the river starting this week. The river and surrounds are affected by Arum Lilies, which were introduced in the early part of the colony, escaping from someone’s garden.”

Evelyn’s heartfelt upset was evident when raising the subject of the local Indigenous people, “Oh no… We didn’t bother to ask anybody, did we!? We didn’t bother to find out the skills of management that they had. We should and would like to have more Indigenous people involved now. We are trying to engage Indigenous people to be involved in the project on a daily basis.”

Native to South Africa, over the last 100 years Arum Lilies have spread through the forest extending to Albany. The seeds are sticky and

“In my personal opinion, Indigenous people have skills that Western Culture does not possess. We should learn the history and knowledge

the local Indigenous people have. I think we missed a big opportunity there.” “There is a pine tree around 100 years old planted in the Tuart Forest. Hailing from the Ranges in Queensland, its pine-cones weigh up to 20kg, with huge seeds four times the size of a Brazilnut – quite a food source. I’ve read studies of the CSIRO, who are establishing the walking tracks of the Indigenous peoples around Australia. Aboriginal people took seeds, planting them along walk-trails across the country. In areas around Australia, non-native plants are growing, which are older than white settlement.” LTFRG’s projects will span years. 2040 - A Visionary Future An Interview with Damon Gameau by Anthony Kilner & Grace Drake

When it comes to environmental warriors, Australian actor/director, Damon Gameau is really utilising his skills and influence to help make people aware of just what is needed to get this planet back on track towards environmental stability, and to provide a beautiful home for our kids, grandkids and beyond. Thanks for the chat Damon. How is 2040 going? You’re welcome. It’s far surpassed our expectations. The easy metric to measure is the box office, in terms of that space, it’s already one of the highest grossing documentaries of all time in Australia, so that’s been terrific.

26

Supernal Magazine

The real positive for us has been the level of local councils that have hosted 2040 nights to discuss what they can do in their regions. Then there’s the teacher implementation. We’ve had thousands of teachers download our free school curriculum guide. The level of engagement, especially

from kids, has been great. We set up an impact campaign off the back of the film, working with about 50 different organisations to allow people to get involved straight away, depending on what they resonated with in the film. We’ve raised almost two million dollars just in the last four months to try and get these things moving. We’re at the very beginning of our journey but it’s already incredibly positive.

That’s great to hear! Now, why did you take the angle of ‘work with what we’ve got’ in the documentary?

interview

When I was doing research for the film about four years ago, we talked to about 60-70 different researchers, academics and scientists around the world. One was a woman called Renee Lurtsman, an environmental psychologist. She explained that if you only receive information that comes with a charge of fear, dread or overwhelm, it actually activates a part of our brain called the limbic system, which, when activated, automatically shuts down the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is where we problem solve and think creatively – it’s not to say that we don’t need to know how bad things are, but if you just keep hammering people with that information, at some point they disengage and switch off. This is what the media has been doing relating to climate change or anything ecological.

on, live the best life I can do, in fact I’m going to party even harder.” That’s the danger. Greta is important, I was in the UN where she said, “How dare you!” To feel that coming from a 16yo girl was very moving. She does need to be heard and these kids are trying to be heard, I respect that 100 percent. But there also needs to be room for what you know. Not everyone wants to go and glue themselves to a pole, so we have to cater for all people. Historically, we didn’t wait for leaders to lead, we taught leaders how to lead on this topic and these are the major topics. Change has always started from small groups of people being louder, then momentum grows and we reach a tipping point, only then there’s change. I think it

would be hard not to argue that we’re close to some kind of tipping point. Beyond that, there’s so many wonderful people, organisations and communities of people doing great things restoring the planet. We just need to shift the spotlight onto them and that’s kind of what the film’s about. Trying to encourage people to start having a different conversation. Let’s not get caught up in the bullshit circus, let’s get on with actually solving this problem.

How much effort has gone into creating 2040? It’s hard to quantify that when you love something and you’re so driven by it. I’ve got two daughters now as well and if we don’t get this right, then for me – there’s nothing else. The credits in the film go for

It’s an interesting concept, and enables everyone to get involved. What do you think of people like Greta Thunberg and those involved with the School Strike for Climate? I respect them and it’s necessary. Their role is the urgency element, they’re the reason we need to act, but if you don’t have the how – the solutions with it, it can be equally paralysing. People think, “Well I can’t do anything about it, it’s too hard, I’m just going to carry

interview about eight minutes because we had so many people who really believed in this message and wanted these solutions put out there. It’s been an amazing journey and also tells me that people are ready to tell a new story.

It’s a grim picture if you choose to look at it that way, isn’t it? Exactly! I want to do everything I can to bring people along for the journey. I don’t think it works any more to go in with this militant style and say. “You guys are wrong.” People just switch off.

It’s important that we communicate this well. The minute you start talking about anthropogenic and negative emissions, people just switch off, they don’t know what to do. Unless we can communicate, we’re not going to get through this. It’s our kids, it’s our sense of community, clean air and clean water. That’s got to be the language moving forward, otherwise we’re just going to get stuck in this ridiculous debate.

Very true. Just before we finish up, do you have any final words?

In fact, studies show they double-down on what their beliefs are and actually pull more to try and prove a point. We must re-humanise this problem and sell this story of a better future to people, whatever it might be, as that’s the only way we’re going to get through this. People might say it’s a film about climate change, however, even if climate change wasn’t a problem, we’d want these solutions anyway, because of how they benefit communities. Decentralise energy, whether it’s soil health or healthy oceans. We should do these things now, regardless, to save our civilisation and the bonus is that we get to pull carbon from the atmosphere.

28

Supernal Magazine

this the younger generation are saying “Yeah, but we’ve only got a certain amount of resources. If we keep growing, we’re destroying ecosystems and we’re polluting our oceans, everything we hold dear.” Unless we can find those points of commonality the battle will continue. Again, it’s going to get messier before it gets better. I just think stories are the way, we’re a species that’s evolved to tell stories, facts and logic just don’t work anymore!

I suggest people go to www.whatsyour2040.com. There’s a button to activate your plan. Basically, fill out the questionnaire based on the type of person you are. We then offer six or seven things that people can do now based on those preferences.

One of the things I see in kids is their passion. There’s a guy, Jonathan Salk, he’s very passionate and he talks about the fact that we’re at this intersection point where there’s two very different world views that are distinctly clashing. One is the older, more concerted view, which is about how exponential growth is the only way to lift the poverty and create wealth. Against

This way we move away from this prescriptive idea of everyone’s got to eat less meat and ride their bike to work. People are more likely to see their commitment through if they’re relying on their passions. Melbourne’s Magnificent Bays It was explained to us that the habitual migration of the whales, their sightings and birthing is changing. Humpbacks usually birth in the warmer waters of NSW and Queensland yet approximately three newborns hav e been reported in our bays. This tells us that water temperatures and ecology is being influenced by changes that must be understood and addressed and, as Jeff Weir so poignantly put it.

by ShirleySienna and Anthony Kilner Recently Anthony and I had the pleasure of interviewing Jeff Weir and Jenny Pallant at the Dolphin Research Institute in Hastings on the Westernport Marina. Our visit was enlightening and delightful, giving us a lot to ponder. The tireless effort, integrity and commitment adhered to by the people involved has been ongoing for nearly 30 years, since Jeff began his journey. The ‘Victorian Marine Ambassador’ and ‘I Sea, I care’ programs instigated in schools and communities around Victoria, encourages students and adults to get inv olv ed in v arious projects and activ ities, designed to align with env ironmental sustainability and the sheer pleasure of connecting with the dolphins and marine creatures, who share their home with us. We hav e about 120 bottlenose dolphins in the bay and the rest are common dolphins. A highlight for Melbournians is that common dolphins generally only liv e in the oceans around the world,

30

Supernal Magazine

not bays like ours. The dolphins share their home with killer whales and we’v e had records of Orcas coming as far as Mt Martha into Port Phillip and, in the wintertime, following the humpback whales.

“We should be realising that our backyard extends into the bay and oceans, it doesn’t stop at the shoreline.” We learned about the bay’s dolphins, their behav iours and that they can be recognised indiv idually by their dorsal fins. Dolphins are at the top of the food chain and their health and wellbeing reflect the state of the water, its ecosystem and sustainable food supply. This, in turn, affects us positiv ely or adv ersely as humans who enjoy and source from the v ery bay itself. We were surprised by the div ersity and v arieties of the marine creatures and the size and magnitude of the reef here. Our focus was the two peninsulas, Westernport and Mornington and the dolphin project itself. We also discussed management and energy supply/source systems that hav e been ongoing topics of debate. This was v ery interesting and gav e much food for thought. We ended up discussing global issues and Images supplied by the Dolphin Institute

interview gained a great deal of insight and accurate information. As scientists and marine env ironmentalists, Jeff and the team hav e the knowledge and factual ev idence required to giv e a greater scale of perspectiv e to these subjects, which are v ery important when defining what is integral and what is not. For our surv iv al, to flourish and thriv e as one of many species that share space on this marv ellous planet, we must care for and respect our marine counterparts. Jeff explained the many positiv e ideas and implementations that are being dev eloped and we discov ered what an ecologically important place our peninsula is on a world scale. It is a v ery unique habitual env ironment and I am proud to see we hav e so many of the best working on it right here. I would encourage ev eryone to v isit the centre and take a tour. There is so much each of us can do, whether we liv e on the peninsula or in the hills or suburbs. You can go to the website or the centre itself and find out more. You can donate and you can ev en ‘Adopt a Dolphin’ and/or become an ‘I See, I care’ champion, which funds research and education programs. This ensures that the dolphins and marine life can be kept safe and cared for. It also keeps the v olunteers on and in the water, when help and rescue are required and to monitor the bays and marine ecology.

I’m v ery blessed to liv e on the Westernport Peninsula and often see a pod of dolphins swimming close to shore at Balnarring Beach. I watch them play and instigate close encounters with the boaters and boarders. I hav e seen them coming in to swim with the horses early in the morning, as the strappers take them into the water close to the shoreline and also interacting with dogs splashing about in the shallows. It is exhilarating to watch, but can be quite ov erwhelming to experience and please remember dolphins are wild creatures and v ery powerful. Their energy and driv e can be full-on. Awareness and respect is a must! The Dolphin Research Institute is a not-for-profit society, formed by a group of prominent and objectiv e marine scientists and educators.

Most of the funding comes from donors. Common-sense is of the utmost importance. If you are a boater or on a jet-ski please remember there are strict rules for engagement and distance. For further information, you can subscribe to the newsletter. You can report sightings of whales and dolphins and v oice any concerns you hav e about misconduct by v isitors to the bay and beaches. There are guideguide lines and regulation that ensure the safety of being on the water with dolphins and learn a little more about their behav iour.

interview

5 Minutes with Jeff Weir There is so much to learn about our bays, so here’s a snippet of the interview with Jeff. Social research tells us that 90 per cent of Victorians care more about Queensland’s ecosystem than they do about Victoria’s marine ecosystems. In southern waters, most of these species are endemic; in fact, in some cases, we’v e got the highest lev el of endemic marine species on the planet. We’v e got the world’s smallest sea star and we hav e the world’s fastest-growing plant.

The biggest issue today is climate change alongside population growth. During the cooler months of the year, the Eastern side of Port Phillip builds up into a really strong plankton hotspot.

“So the other part of our social research is about the rubbish on the beaches…”

They all share their home with about 5 million people. We just ticked ov er to 5 million last September and the projections are that we’ll be 10 million in 2051. So the other part of our social research is about the rubbish on the beaches and what’s clear is that two-thirds of Melbournians think that it’s left by swimmers, whereas the data shows that it’s 90 per cent from the catchments.

“We’ve had records of Orcas coming as far as Mt Martha into Port Phillip…”

32

Supernal Magazine

We work in three areas, v ery strategically, v ery deliberately. We’re not a lobby group, we don’t sign petitions and we don’t run around going on strike for stuff. What we do is we look at an issue and dev elop a response

and bring about solutions. In the first decade of our work the biggest issue facing our dolphins was uncontrolled tourism. We did the science; we showed leadership to dev elop a plan. We had a public meeting with tour operators and the gov ernment, brought them together and dev eloped a dolphin tourism forum, dev eloping a v oluntary code of conduct. We did the science that underpinned the legislativ e changes to get the Wildlife Act changed, to bring about licensing for tour operators and Victoria led the world. An hour of teaching kids stuff v ersus becoming part of the culture where we’v e got ev idence of social impact. We can now show 20 years of ev idence on social impact.

Green Sakthi - The Power of Nature An interview with Nathalie Latham By Freya Savitri Sampson / Custodian Eartheart

“In Green Sakthi's nursery are four hundred thousand saplings.”

Twenty years ago I asked my guides to send me someone whom I could speak to about the mystical experiences that had spontaneously been occurring in my life. They sent Anthony Zafer, who shared some of his mystical experiences in India, including meeting an Av atar, who at the time was liv ing in a cow shed doing puja (prayer/ritual) all day, ev ery day. Anthony had been drawn to this place and whilst spending time with this v atar, he manifested Anthony a Lalith a (Hindu Goddess) pendant to assist him with his spiritual growth. I was suitably awed and inspired, as my knowing had assured me this type of creation was possible.

34

Supernal Magazine

Some sev enteen years later, through a series of extraordinary synchronicities, I found myself in Sri Puram, Tamil Nadu, Southern India. In the v ery place that Anthony had described sev enteen years prev iously, only now, where once was a simple cow shed, a massiv e ‘Golden Temple’ stands.

Nathalie explained, “Amma says, we hav e two eyes, one to focus on your spiritual dev elopment and one to your world serv ice”. Sakthi is a Sanskrit word that means ‘ the power of creation’. Green Sakthi is a Not-For-Profit organisation and env ironmental project, which is only one part of the SNOSPT.”

This is, the epicentre of the Sri Narayani Om Siddah Peedam Trust (SNOSPT) organisation. This is the life work of Av atar, Sri Sakthi Naraynai Amma, offered in serv ice to the allev iation of the suffering of humanity and Earth.

“The first tree was planted in 1992. At that time the area was v ery dry and barren. Six hundred years prior it had been a complete forest. Through the absence of a culture of replanting trees, the forest was entirely erased”.

Whilst there, I was heart-opened to find many extraordinary projects being activ ated and rolled out in the complex and local area. One of which was Green Sakthi, where I met Nathalie Latham, who has liv ed and done serv ice at Sri Puram for many years. Today, I caught up with Nathalie while she waited for her flight to New York at Chennai airport to talk about ‘Green Sakthi’. This project is currently Nathalie’s main Sev a (serv ice) to humanity.

“Over 1.5 million trees have been planted and the vision of returning the land to a lush environment is being realised.”

interview feature “Our intention is to plant another million trees over the next two years.” This Div ine project has seen ov er 1.5 million trees planted and the v ision of returning the land to a lush env ironment is being realised. Ev en the weather and temperature has changed in the Peedam area, through mantra and ritual calling for rain to water the trees.

d Nathalie passionately stated that, “The fundamental basis of Vedic Philosophy (for life and spiritual practice), says that God Is Nature and Nature Is God. The mantras chanted in this philosophy were created many thousands of years ago by the Rishis, who sat in nature and listened to its sounds. “Through their keen observ ation and meditation, the Rishis realised that sound and v ibration were connected to the fiv e elements (aether, fire, air, water and earth) and functions of nature in the env ironment of Earth, consciousness and existence. From this came the mantras and rituals observ ed by the Hindu tradition.

When any element is out of balance in the world or a person, there are specific mantras and rituals that can be chanted and performed, which will bring the elements back into balance, thus creating health and harmony. “If you look at any of the indigenous cultures around the world, Australian Aboriginals, Nativ e Canadians and Americans etc, they all hav e their own rainmakers. It all comes from the same basis, connect to nature with a particular v ibration and nature will respond. “It is through the facilitation of this alchemy, that Sri Sakthi Narayani Amma has been able to generate such extraordinary mov ement of energy in such a short time, not only for Green Sakthi, but for all of the projects under his direction and care. “In Green Sakthi's nursery there are four hundred thousand saplings, all grown from seed. Our intention is to plant another million trees ov er the next two years. The chanting from the nearby Golden Temple causes these saplings to grow stronger and faster than in a regular nursery. Around one hundred thousand trees are donated ev ery year to anyone who is seeking to improv e their grounds – univ ersities, gov ernment departments and so on.

“Also one hundred and sev enty people are employed in collecting and hand sorting 2-tons of rubbish ev ery day, from the campus including the hospital, schools, temples and the ashram. This ‘Zero Waste Management’ program is called Exnora. The wages earned from all of these positions in SNOSPT, are v ital to sustaining families and eradicating pov erty. All waste is repurposed and recycled. Ev ery plastic bag is washed, dried and recycled. The food scraps are utilised to feed large worm farms, which create compost and natural fertiliser for the nursery." There are many more extraordinary projects under SNOSPT’s umbrella. If you'd like to find out more, sponsor a tree or make a donation, you can do so here: https://sripuram.org/pages/ projects https://www.greensakthi.org “Six hundred years prior it had been a complete forest, through the absence of a culture of replanting trees, the forest was entirely erased.”

Last month we delv ed into the world of 5G looking at the financial driv ers behind setting up this global network. This month Supernal looks at 5G frequencies used and how those frequencies can impact all liv es on the planet. There is a massiv e amount of information av ailable online. We are trying to get a broad cross balance of this information and prov iding links to follow up, allowing people to make their mind up. Information from the Defense Innov ation Board states that peak data rates are driv en by the amount of spectrum av ailable. In 4G, it is stated that fiv e 20 MHz channels can be bonded. In 5G, up to fiv e 100 MHz channels can be bonded, enabling speeds 20x faster than 4G. Another key issue is the location on the electromagnetic spectrum. The world commonly uses below 6 GHz (low-mid band spectrum) called sub-6 in the 3-4 GHz bands.

The US civ il and commercercial sectors are unable to use sub-6 as this is allocated to the US gov ernment and military. This sector must use another band or wait 10 years for spectrum reallocation. In addition, there are military v ulnerabilities with sharing spectrum. Hence, the US, South Korea and Japan are focused on the 24-300 GHz (high-band spectrum) called mmWav e, as the core domestic 5G approach. The tension around this, as mentioned last month, is the fear of not being the first mov er in 5G. The challenge for the US is to conv ert the world to mmWav e when the majority are on sub-6. Sub-6 spectrum prov ides broad area network cov erage with low risk of interruption, longer wav e length, fewer EMF towers elev ated abov e people. 5G mmWav e is time and cost intensiv e to prov ide more cov erage and requires massiv e infrastructure. US trials used 425 MHz-28 GHz of spectrum compared to the sub-6 GHz band. Disruption to connectiv ity for mmWav e includes the human body, v ehicle and foliage. The equipment is mounted on utility poles and, in the trial of 72,735 macrocell towers and

rooftops, which cov ered only 11.6 per cent of US population at cell edge speeds of 100 Mbps with 3.9 per cent cov erage at 1 Gbps range. For sub-6 same tower sites cov ered 57.4 per cent at 100 Mbps, 21.2 per cent at 1 Gbps. The cost calculates 13 million pole mounted base stations at $400 billion to deliv er 100 Mbps at 28 GHz to 72 per cent of the population.

Other commentators indicate that the US lost the trade war and the health effects are ignored as a result of the remov a of consumer protections. Refer to https://www.youtube.com/wat ch?v =W2EyQp7GP68 The public interest is a critical concern that seems to be not taken v ery seriously by telcos and other manufacturers, ev en gov ernments. There’s a lot of noise saying ‘nothing to see here’, howev er there’s a genuine and growing concern about a cov er-up that will cost liv es. Think smoking cigarettes, asbestos, MDF and more. Numerous papers are reporting on tests carried out on rats and with other equipment highlighting some genuine health concerns that appear to be

Jason D. Varga

I decided for this month’s column, I would do something a little different. I find that many of my clients at the moment are having issues with anxiety, at all levels, mild to chronic, so I thought that I would transcribe here one of the meditations that I teach people to anchor a trigger that they can use to gain a calm, clear, state – anytime, anywhere. I call this ‘grounding in the inner sanctum.’ You can consider the inner sanctum as your fortress of solitude, a place that symbolically represents facets of your unconscious mind. You don’t need to contemplate why each image represents what it does, as the symbology is tucked away in our collective unconscious, just allow yourself to experience without over analysing. As the Zen Buddhists would say; “To do, without doing.” Once you read this through, visualise it in as much vibrant detail as you can. 40

Also, you will be visualising yourself performing the Qi Gong exercise of Parting Waves, you can follow these movements with the accompanying pictures. Practice this visualisation for twenty-one days, as twentyone days is the optimal amount of time for your mind to accept a new behaviour system. Once completed, you will have anchored the physical movement, the trigger of the exercise (Parting Waves from Qi Gong), to the emotional state of being calm and

know the difference between what is real and what is imagined is the key. When there is a conflict between the conscious and subconscious, the subconscious will always win. So the longer you imagine something, the more you create your own reality.

“… you create your own reality.” To start the process, sit back in a comfy chair and make sure you will not be disturbed for about fifteen minutes.

“Will the water to be clean, clear and still like glass.” Now reach out to touch your reflection. Your reflection mirrors your actions, so as the two hands touch, you become one. You are your future self now, knowing that you have learnt something very special, that YOU have the control. With this new-found energy and understanding, make your way back toward the tree, once again giving it a great big hug and feeling that self-love reverberates through you.

Now make your way back to the stairwell, feeling a little like that famous scene from the movie ‘Rocky’, dancing up the stairs, feeling strong, confident, accomplished and exuberant, excited for the future. At the top of the stairs, you take a nice big breath in, feeling that life-giving energy whizzing around your body and, in your own time and at your own pace, bring yourself back to the room. Coping with the unexpected when you’re expecting By Derran Heney RN Mental Health Professional

“I am not supposed to feel like this. Pregnancy and childbirth is supposed to be a time of great happiness, so why am I so miserable?” – Panda, 2017 Pregnancy and giving birth to a baby is generally seen as an event to be celebrated, a happy occasion. However, pregnancy, labour and delivery of a baby can be also a very stressful and challenging time, filled with a mixture of emotions and several stressors that relate to the sudden adjustment in life that having a new little one creates. The statistics are quite astounding. One in four

women will experience depression during their pregnancy. Fifteen per cent of women will develop a major depressive illness in the postpartum period up to 12 months after birth (Beyond Blue, 2016). A majority of women and also some men have experienced the normal kind of ‘baby blues’ that occur following the birth of a new baby. This is usually temporary and normally associated with the adjustment of the birth and care of an infant. Baby blues usually occur from three and up to 10 days following the birth. The experience includes feelings of sadness, tearfulness, irritability, anxiety and general dysphoria or flattened mood. Usually these symptoms resolve on their own, over time.

The explanation of this and more serious perinatal mental health issues are related to the stress associated with pregnancy and childbirth. It includes the changing hormonal load, continued sleep deprivation, interruption of usual routine, lack of support from family, friends and others and other stressors or family dynamics. Add to this the demands related to a new role and feelings of increased responsibility of raising and caring for the baby (PANDA, 2017) Perinatal, Anxiety and Depression Australia. mental health of profound anxiety or depression during pregnancy that last for more than two weeks in duration. This can affect their overall enjoyment of life and ability to maintain a normal healthy functioning routine. A mother can experience severe depression, which is characterised by a depressed mood state, sleep and appetite disturbances, anxiety, energy and lack of the usual enjoyment in activities and, oftentimes feeling a reduction in emotion or bonding towards the baby. This is usually also associated with strong feelings, such as an overwhelming sense of hopelessness and helplessness. There are both support and treatments available which are discussed further. Post-natal depression and anxiety The postpartum period relates to up to 12 months after the birth of the baby. The Edinburgh postnatal depression scale can be a useful test, with a set of 10 questions that will help to identify the level of depression being experienced. While it is not a certain diagnosis, it can be

helpful to identify a range of symptoms, whether mild middle range to more serious and what to do. The link can be found on the Beyond Blue link – Mental Health Check For Mums. Postpartum psychosis Postpartum psychosis is a very serious condition that affects 1-2 people out of every 1000 childbirths. Those more at risk may have had a family history of postpartum psychosis in the past. Symptoms emerge rapidly within two weeks of delivery. The early symptoms of postpartum psychosis include mood lability, a lack of sleep and obsessive worries about the baby. More serious symptoms follow from these initial signs and these include the onset of psychosis, with hallucinations, delusions, unusual and disorganised behaviour. There could be several risks that arise for both mother and baby during this period also, and careful assessment, treatment and support will be essential. Where to get help

maternal and child health nurse, a midwife, obstetrician or lactation consultant – can be very beneficial, as they can screen for depression, anxiety or psychosis and provide early support, intervention and referral. Increase of family and friendship presence around the family unit has been found to help reduce the stress associated with the challenges faced during the pre and postnatal period. Counselling may be of assistance if family dynamics or other stressors are a significant contributing factor. Mother Baby specialised units are hospitalbased inpatient services that can address mental health concerns and associated attachment issues. Over the Rainbow LGBTQIA+ Terms of Reference by Celeste de Vis Recently, I received feedback about my use of terms from previous columns that some readers were not aware of or found confusing. This article should answer some of your questions. Before joining the LGBTQIA+ (Rainbow community) I knew very little about it. I came across so many terms that I had never heard of or used before. I literally spent hours online familiarising myself with

them. The process was akin to learning a new language, and sometimes, unfortunately, I learnt the hard way. Regardless, I try very hard to respect everyone, and a simple apology is reasonable if we unintentionally offend another person. The following are some examples and explanations of LGBTQIA+ terminology that some people may be less familiar with.

What does LGBTQIA+ mean? This acronym sums up a small representation of the community of folk who are L (lesbian), G (gay), B (bisexual), T (transgender), Q (queer), I (intersex), A (asexual), and + (representative of the other gender and sexually diverse folk who are living on our planet: Me, for example. I am a member of the + category, as I am pansexual.)

44

Supernal Magazine

Cisgender

/a cisgender person/ - adjective

The term cisgender is apparently a word that readers have not heard, or are unfamiliar with. Cisgender is a label that is used when describing one’s gender. It’s a term for people whose gender identity aligns with the person’s sex that they were assigned with at birth. Cisgendered people may or may not be sexually diverse: be it straight or gay. Cis is Latin for ‘on the same side’, whereas Trans is Latin for ‘across, beyond’.

Deadnaming

/the act of deadnaming/ - verb

Deadnaming is a term specifically related to the

LGBTQI+

Trans community. To deadname someone is to use or refer to the birth name of a transgender person, instead of their preferred name, when engaging in conversation or speaking about them. I suspect people deadname for a variety of reasons; namely forgetfulness or complacency. Sometimes, friends and loved ones will deadname unintentionally. It took me over six months to remember and use Charlotte’s name fluently after she transitioned. I apologised a lot during that period of time. To accidently deadname someone does not dismiss or take away the pain from hearing the old name. Addressing a person using the name that relates to another lifetime, can trigger shock and trauma. When deadnaming is used intentionally in order to hurt, disrespect or harm another, the perpetrator is breaking the law under the Sex Discrimination Act 1984. This year I witnessed my daughter being deadnamed within her school. Both incidents occurred in Term 3. I was under the impression that it may have taken some time for the news to travel across campus about Charlotte being transgender, hence bullying occurring later in the year. On two occasions, her old name was used repeatedly to attract her attention and when she

ignored them, they mocked her for hearing impairments and lack of intelligence to ‘recognise’ her own name. The surrounding students who supported Charlotte reported the incidents. The bullies in question were suspended: the message from the school is ZERO tolerance to bullying.

Gender Identity

/identity relating to gender/ - noun

Gender identity is a term used to describe how a person feels and who they know themselves to be. A person’s gender is not determined by what is between one’s legs (our biological sex), actually gender is determined through our brain, our sense of self. Society in general uses two genders, male and female (gender binary), basing it on anatomy, but in actual fact there are many genders!

Non-binary

/not aligning with binary genders/ adjective

Non-binary is a term used to describe oneself as not aligning with being male or female or solely as one of those two genders. At Rainbow Connections we have a couple of gender fluid cherubs. These children use gender expression that fluctuates between being a boy or girl. Sometimes they turn up to our group meet identifying as very feminine, and other times they will arrive dressed as quite masculine. Both children are happy to use their birth name and pronouns, regardless of their gender expression on any day. May you all have a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year!

Spirituality and Your Business

S

pirituality is such a broad term, isn’t it? The meaning varies from person to person but for the purpose of this column, it’s going to simply refer to that which you believe in (i.e. Universe, Spirit, God, Energy and so on). As a business owner who is open to learning about things like ‘alignment’, you might love learning about what spirituality means to you but you are not yet sure about how to incorporate that into the business. I’m here to help. For me, one of the things that generated a big energetic shift in my business was gratitude. At first, I learned about what gratitude was and about how to practice it. Small notebooks littered my car interior with scribbled notes about the five things I was grateful for each day. The iTunes app on my phone is now the proud home of my very own high vibe playlist, which I’d use each day to put me in a great mood

46

Supernal Magazine

before I’d say out loud all of the things I was thankful for and couldn’t live without, just as fast as I could. I was in love with gratitude. But wanting to take it a step further, I felt called to really explore how I could incorporate this particular practice into the business. At first, I experimented with little things. For example, every time I greeted a client, I’d express genuine gratitude that they came and I’d say something like, “thank you so much for making the trip down” or “thank you so much for inviting me to be part of this journey!” and things like that. Over time, work became a happier place. It was interesting to observe, and so, I wanted to take it further. I added a gratitude note on the footer of my invoices. Every time I looked at my diary, instead of being disillusioned at seeing an open appointment, I’d direct my focus to be

business grateful for the people that had booked in. Again, in a relatively short amount of time, those gaps disappeared as new clients found me and booked appointments. Curious to see where else gratitude could be implemented, I turned to my policies and my procedures. How could I show my contractors that I was thankful for the work that they do, not just for me and my business, but for the clients too? How did my contractors want me to show gratitude? What would that look like? So, I held meetings with each member of my team individually and asked them if they felt appreciated and for ideas on what I could do that would make them feel appreciated. The results were incredibly varied and no two people said the same thing! Some of the feedback included, ‘a massage voucher’, ‘a day of paid training’, ‘a random thank you note’, ‘a hug’, ‘praise every now and again’, ‘do something nice for me’. For example, surprise them by making them a cup of special tea – that type of thing. For stakeholders in the business, I came up with the idea of expressing

gratitude by sending them a card in the mail periodically, telling them how much we love working with them and thanking them for any referrals. For clients, we came up with ways to express gratitude such as upgrading our tea and coffee, saying thank you when we interact with them and generally just trying to go the extra mile. In fact, even when things went wrong, I was able to integrate gratitude into the solution. And the interesting thing was that, as a result, situations that had previously felt heavy or uncomfortable suddenly became lighter and more manageable for everyone. I’d absolutely encourage you to take a good look at your spiritual practice and to really see how you can incorporate even just one thing, into the business. Then see what happens! Happy manifesting

The Spirit Of Things A Medium’s Life by Sam Duly

In a Medium’s life, like any, there are positive points and some negative points that I will cover in this month’s column. The positives do outweigh the negatives, but the negatives are simply what ‘we’ have to deal with, sometimes daily. Firstly, the positives. Why am I medium? The answer is because ‘I am’, plain and simple. ‘I am’ is a powerful two-word statement and should be used more often, as it is uplifting and motivational. I am a medium, and my soul chose this for me before I was born. My mediumship evolved from my soul when it was meant to, and interestingly came about when my grandma passed 10 days before my 14th birthday. She was also a psychic medium, and we shared the same birthday. As a medium, you can say

50

Supernal Magazine

that you love to be the connection between the spirt and the physical worlds, that you like to help people that you want to be of service to mankind, but you still are a medium because you are!

“A mediums’ life can be a lonely one, which can be quite isolating at times.” When people say, ‘You are lucky to have this gift’, I tell them that the gift is connecting them with their past loved ones and I have just been chosen this lifetime to do that. Speaking about mediums in general, we all want to help people; but also, we have to be mindful of our energy as we ‘give’ so much when we do readings. We can, and I certainly do, get tired if I do too many readings, so I limit mine to four a day and that is not every day, as that is simply not possible. If we pushed ourselves too much, we would get burnt out and be no use to anyone, especially ourselves. Even when someone is desperate, it is hard on our

heartstrings, but I have found that if someone is ‘desperate’, it is often the case that they are looking more for a psychic reading than a mediumship one. However, if Spirit directs me to the urgency of an extra mediumship appointment for someone in distress, I will generally always do so. A mediums’ life can be a lonely one, which can be quite isolating at times. You also find that sometimes you miss out on social activities; as you may be working at a church for example. Sometimes though, it is good to be alone as when you deal with a lot of grief, even when laughter is mixed in, it is beneficial to have that peace within.

“I am’ is a powerful twoword statement and should be used more often, as it is uplifting and motivational.” Quite a lot of mediums travel in their work and this is hard at times as we are rushing everywhere, flying and driving miles, missing out on home comforts especially our own bed. I call it suffering from OBS – own

mediumship

bed syndrome! But again, it is great to spread the word.

“Love is eternal and binds us together forever. ” The hardest thing is the jealousy of some mediums and some who even cause problems for others. Why? Who knows? Elements such as ego, superiority, differing beliefs and styles can all cause rifts between practitioners - but beneath surface differences, are we not all working towards the same end goal? We are all working for Spirit and Spirit, in effect, chose us to do the work for their families on earth. The Spirit World watch mediums work and then chooses the one who they feel has the ability to help their loved one on earth. So why the jealousy? We are all in this together, so we should help and support one another. What must God think sometimes, I wonder? I must say, it can make you retreat within and distance yourself from some people. Though this may not be a huge negative for everyone, when you are sensitive, it

can often seem a whole lot worse!

is eternal and binds us together forever.

“Most of all, we continually work on our development so that we can be the best we can be for both worlds.”

As mediums, we don’t just do readings, demonstrations and church services, we also help people get in touch with their Spirit within, we help people realise their own God potential, we learn and give great philosophies and most of all we continually work on our development so that we can be the best we can be for both worlds. I am a medium because I am!

In saying that, I am proud of who I am and the work I do. I would not change who I am for anything. To see a mother’s face after her child has just communicated through me, feeling that love and special reunion, witnessing the healing that takes place at that moment, there are no words. Love

Yours in Spirit, Sam Duly

Over decades we’ve journeyed independently, in groups and we’ve created opportunities to journey together. Check out our March 2020 edition, where I’ll share one of those journeys. Even before meeting, Louise and I had an instant affinity. Now years later, the stars have aligned to bring us to the same geography, same home, at the same time. We’re creating on many levels, within our home, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, decades and beyond - and shamanically, at the same time, learning how we mirror, cycle and how to grow together in love. It’s interesting how when we do not listen to the quiet whispers of our soul, it gets louder and louder until it’s

screaming at us and we can no longer ignore it. The soul’s language is different from the sounds we make with our vocal cords, echoing phonetic geometries that, generations before, we created as language and attached a meaning. We sense, then we feel, adding thoughts, which often justify the feeling - making it mean something, then stringing it together in sentences, unconsciously, then consciously, which by their virtue define our life direction and following actions. We utter aloud, adding weight. The driving emotion, internal and external utterances fuel the creation process and before we know it we’re experiencing that which we spoke about - positive or negative. What we’ve thought and spoken about is not always our true intention. We may be stuck in our crap and creating what we don’t desire.

You see the thing is - creation doesn’t mind how we realise and embody our soul’s purpose. Its only concern is that we learn the ‘lesson’ and embody the wisdom. It’s our free-will choice to learn how we like. The easy way, the hard way it’s up to you. Free-will is the ‘divines’ mechanism to help us learn, by experiencing the Lore of Cause and Effect (Karma - grace or debt) and through the outcome or consequence of our choices, we get contrast (Lore of Duality). The soul’s language is a metaphor. To speak to us, it creates an experience/ classroom called life - awake or asleep, you’re always in class. If one does not remember the soul and divine connection and the wisdom to be learned, it may well inhibit one’s freedom by creating ‘out of flow’ experiences in one or multiple aspects of life. The

soul’s purpose is to create the perfect circumstances in one’s life to stay on track and not move off at a tangent, therefore, enabling space to attend to learn the lesson. What’s interesting is that, when one focuses and follows the process through to completion, a world of grace and abundance that was previously out of reach, flows into life.

and afterglow, otherwise separation occurs, you work out pretty quickly if you can love fiercely with someone.

Sharing space, a home for an extended period of time, means that you get to see all of the shiny and all of the rough growing edges, the dirt on the soles of our feet. What I know about the process of relationship is that you don’t really know a person until you’ve gotten close then because of closeness notice differences, at which point potential conflict arises. When we’ve seen and experienced how another handles conflict and whether all parties can come back into unity

Living closely with people means inevitably the relationship cycle process will occur more quickly. When you know how a person is at their worst and you’ve come back from that place into deeper love, commitment and unity, then you know if you can create together for a long/ lifetime. The skillfulness with which one recognises and navigates these stages of relationship cycle is how one grows in love.

It’s okay to be passionate, it’s only when people completely avoid or start fighting dirty, blame, lying to themselves, arrogance and so on, that there is potential for differences to become unsolvable.
