Throughout my life, I have always loved the shoulder seasons, especially fall. As a time of dramatic change leading into winter, fall has long been a season for reflection—enjoying the shift from warm days to cool nights and the subtle color changes everywhere. In our resort community, generations of Idahoans who have shaped the Wood River Valley have contributed to creating this special place. Today, learning from and appreciating the past for the present and future is a gift. No matter how strange the world may seem, Sun Valley values its history, and as we face change, we should not rest on our laurels—continue to contribute, educate, and enjoy.

It is truly an incredible event ending with the magnificent sheep trailing down Ketchum’s
Main Street. Taking place throughout the Wood River Valley, there’s something for everyone to enjoy, from food, classes, demos, and arts to champion dog trials, sheep tales, and live music.

Elegant and awe-inspiring, the Sun Valley Culinary Institute (SVCI) hosts Sun Valley Ballroom, offering an evening of exceptional ballroom dance performances ending in an open dance for attendees.
On Friday, September 26, from 7 to 9:30pm, the Argyros Performing Arts Center in Ketchum will transform into a ballroom where dance professionals and champion dance duos, including one of the original Dancing with the Stars professional dancers and 13th-season winner Karina Smirnoff, along with Dmitry Timokhin, an eight-time National Russian Champion, will make their U.S. partner debut performance together.
The evening will also feature the current world number-one ballroom dancing duo, Arina Grishanina and Alexander Chernositov, winners of the 2025 Blackpool Latin Championship, the world’s largest and most prestigious ballroom dancing competition. In addition, accomplished U.S. Champions Tatiana and Yegor Novikov, along with sixtime Ohio Ballroom Champions Lynn Shanahan and Darius Mosteika, will join this impressive lineup of dance champions.
These highly esteemed dance professionals and world champion competitive ballroom dancers will perform international Latin dances, such as the flirtatious cha-cha, the exotic samba, the passionate rumba, the dramatic paso doble, and the energetic jive, along with classic ballroom dances including the waltz, tango, foxtrot, and quickstep.
This evening of dance has been made possible by SVCI advisory committee member Mindy Meads and renowned ballroom coach and internationally recognized Professional Latin Champion Vasily Golovin. Based in Boise, Golovin operates the Idaho Ballroom Dance Center, where his Golovin Dance Studio is located, and travels weekly to Ketchum to teach classes at Studio Move.
“Unbelievable young dancers, who are winning the highest-level competitions all over the world, will be dancing at the debut of Sun Valley Ballroom,” says Golovin. “This is an incredible opportunity to see the world’s best rhythm dancers in Idaho.”
Mindy Meads adds, “I combined my passion for ballroom dancing and the Sun Valley Culinary Institute for this event. I started dancing years ago after watching Dancing with the Stars, and I’ve fallen in love with it. Ballroom dancing is great for all ages because it helps with overall wellness and stress.”
After the performance, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an open dance. In addition, the Limelight Hotel Ketchum is offering discounts on available rooms for those who wish to attend and stay overnight. When booking, mention the Sun Valley Ballroom SVCI Benefit.

Elaine Kim has built a life—and a brand—at the intersection of fashion, art, and nature. Today, her boutique in Ketchum, Idaho, is more than a store. Elaine Kim is a modern sanctuary—a cozy, welcoming space where timeless design meets personal expression, where clothing becomes a conduit between creativity and the natural world.
Her journey began far from Sun Valley. At the age of seven and a half, Kim left Seoul, Korea, with her family, relocating to San Francisco. She grew up in Northern California and later in Los Angeles, where her deep love of fashion took shape. But fashion was not her first calling. At UC Berkeley she immersed herself in literature; later, at the Sorbonne in Paris, she explored film studies. Both fields sharpened her sense of narrative and aesthetics, while her upbringing in a family of artists and scholars gave her a natural affinity for design.
“Fashion is a marriage of my artistic instincts and the cultural shifts happening around me,” Kim explains. “It keeps me engaged. It’s alive. It’s never boring.”
That perspective propelled her into the industry. Kim began her career by founding ECRU, a luxury boutique in Los Angeles, where her fluency in five languages and her instinct for spotting talent enabled her to introduce avant-garde designers to the U.S. market. Names such as Marc Jacobs, Robert Clergerie, John Galliano, Anne Demeulemeester, Costume National, and Sybilla—now woven into the vocabulary of modern fashion— were, at the time, revelations to Los Angeles and to the larger national fashion audience. Kim was at the forefront of that first minimalist movement, shaping what American clients would come to see as global style.
Her personally designed collections soon followed. In the early 1990s, Kim launched Product by Elaine Kim, a line that embodied the decade’s departure from 1980s excess. “The ‘90s were about clean lines, minimalism, and a new kind of personal expression,” she recalls. “Clothes became more streamlined, more experimental with form and materials.” Relocating her company to Mercer Street in Soho, Kim immersed herself in New York’s creative energy, balancing it with her Laurel Canyon home in Los Angeles. When she and her husband decided to raise their children away from the intensity of Manhattan, she sold Product and stepped back from fashion for nearly a decade.
“People have consciously chosen to live here in a way that feels real, deeply connected, and inspiring. They have welcomed me and my work with open arms.”
—Elaine Kim
But in 2008, she returned with the Elaine Kim collection, a label that has now endured for 17 years. Its longevity is a testament to both vision and adaptability. Through a recession and shifting markets, Kim has remained focused on intimate, client-driven retail. She thrives in the boutique setting, where one-on-one relationships allow her to style women directly, listen to their needs, and design clothing that is both personal and lasting.
Kim’s philosophy is simple yet profound—own fewer, better things. “True sustainability,” she insists, “is clothing that lasts. Clothes should never overshadow the woman. They should reflect her personality and spark who she really is.”
Each season, Kim produces 30 to 50 meticulously edited pieces— travel-ready separates, layering essentials, dresses, outerwear, and accessories in urban neutrals and industrial-inspired hues. Her signature tech stretch pant, reimagined seasonally in multiple silhouettes, has become a staple among editors, stylists, and clients worldwide. The collection is designed for women who live fully— moving between continents, between professional and personal roles, and between seasons—with grace and ease.
International recognition has followed. From WWD, Vogue, and Vanity Fair to The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal , Kim’s work has been profiled and praised. But while the spotlight matters, it is the loyal following of sophisticated women— discerning, creative, and authentic—that defines her brand.
Beyond fashion, Kim has long been a passionate advocate for the environment. She is a UC Master Gardener and serves on the board of the Theodore Payne Foundation, championing the native plant movement and educating Southern Californians about ecological landscaping. Long before sustainability was fashionable, Kim converted a Mercedes station wagon to biodiesel to ferry her children to school and to their afterschool lessons. The electric vehicle was next, and she purchased her first one more than two decades ago. That same environmental ethos runs through her brand—limited, intentional production—the use of natural fabrics whenever possible and ongoing experimentation with sustainable textiles.
“Clothes should never overshadow the woman. They should reflect her personality and spark who she really is.”
—Elaine Kim
“I keep my brand small and tightly focused,” Kim explains. “Durability and quality are everything. Nature teaches us that balance—beauty that lasts, simplicity that sustains.”
In Sun Valley, she finds both inspiration and renewal. Hiking the trails, skiing the mountains, or simply breathing in the pristine air, Kim experiences the circle of creativity at its most complete. “Nature is my greatest inspiration,” she says. “It feeds my imagination and grounds my work.”
The cosmopolitan community of Sun Valley is equally important. “What I love here is the authenticity,” Kim reflects. “People have consciously chosen to live here in a way that feels real, deeply connected, and inspiring. They have welcomed me and my work with open arms. For me, that mix of nature and worldly openness is a perfect match. To live between Sun Valley and Laurel Canyon— I’m beyond grateful!”
With her brand firmly established, her voice recognized, and her values guiding every choice, Elaine Kim embodies the rare designer who has created not only a collection but also a philosophy—fashion that endures, creativity rooted in nature, and style lived authentically.

A Heritage and Fall Celebration in the Wood River Valley
Celebrating the change of seasons and the rich cultural heritage of the Wood River Valley, the 29th anniversary of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, held from October 8 to 12 (with a special, “early-bird/locals” Farm to Table Dinner on October 7), is a five-day affair featuring various activities at numerous Valley venues with established annual events. For the 2025 Sheep Tales Gathering, Dr. John Bieter, a history professor at Boise State University, and Iñaki Arrieta Baro, head of the Jon Bilbao Basque Library at the University of Nevada, Reno, will discuss the lertxun-marrak or arborglyphs—unique cultural artifacts that Basque sheepherders carved during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the Western mountain aspen groves.
The National Qualifying Sheepdog Trials will feature 80 of the nation’s most skilled border collies and their handlers competing for top honors. A Sheep Folklife Fair includes Basque, Scottish, and Peruvian dancers and musicians, sheep shearing demonstrations, over 80 sheep and wool product vendors, and children’s activities. Culinary events include “For the Love of Lamb” tastings, Lamb Fest at the Folklife Fair, Cooking with Lamb classes, a cheese-making class, and Farm to Table Lamb Dinners showcasing Idaho lamb from local ranchers. In addition, Wool Fest offers 22 classes and workshops on creating crafts with wool. All of the events and activities conclude with a Big Sheep Parade featuring 1,200 sheep trailing down Main Street in Ketchum, Idaho, and a Happy Trails Closing Party held in Ketchum Town Square.
Throughout the years, the Festival has been recognized as one of the Top Ten Fall Festivals in the World by msn.com travel, Top Ten U.S. Fall Festivals by smartertravel.com, Top Animal Festivals in the World, and Top Ten Fall Festivals by USA Today. It has also been named one of the Top 7 Fun Fall Festivals by AARP, one of the Greatest Cultural Events in the West by Northwest Travel, and received the Society of American Travel Writers’ Phoenix Award for best in cultural tourism as well as the Idaho Governor’s Award for Cultural Heritage. The Festival has even been featured on Jeopardy as a question in the U.S. Festivals category.
As a tradition that has lasted over 150 years, the movement of sheep (‘trailing’) from high mountain summer pastures down through the Valley to traditional winter grazing and lambing areas in the south is celebrated by the Trailing of the Sheep Festival. Honoring living history, people, arts, cultures, and traditions of Idaho’s sheep ranching families, with a focus on the contributions of the Basques, Scottish, and Peruvians, the Festival is deeply rooted in our local mountain culture. SVPN Magazine is a proud media sponsor highlighting this year’s 2025 Festival for everyone to enjoy.

Wandering the high meadows of the American West, observant travelers may notice rough carvings among the aspen trees: names and dates, images of homes and figures. These arborglyphs—inscriptions made by Basque sheepherders who began immigrating to the U.S. in the mid-19th century—helped to pass the time on long lonely outings and often recalled a homeland far away.
On the Friday evening, October 10, of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, the annual Sheep Tales Gathering at the Argyros Performing Arts Center will explore these unique cultural artifacts and what they reveal about the men who came to work here and build lives in a new country.
Voices from Solitude: Basque Tree Carvings in the American West will feature speakers and an art installation, followed by a related Virtual Reality (VR) experience on the following day.
John Bieter, Professor of History at Boise State University, and Iñaki Arrieta Baro, Head of the Jon Bilbao Basque Library at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), will keynote the presentation, discussing the history of arborglyphs and common themes found among the drawings.
Bieter lived in the Basque country of Spain growing up, where he became interested in the broader story of U.S. immigration. His later graduate work focused on the Basque community in Idaho.
Eventually, his studies led him into the mountains, where he also began taking students to study arborglyphs.
“How do you document and tell the story of a group of people?” Bieter asks. “You go where they went, which for Basques meant boarding houses and up into the hills.”
One of Bieter’s students almost 20 years ago was artist Earle Swope, who became captivated by the markings and started casting them in plaster and silicone, then creating facsimiles in paper pulp. Another Boise-based artist, Amy Nack, was cutting trees into paper panels around the same time, and the two friends decided to merge their interests.
The result was Immigrant Shadows: Tracing the Herders’ Legacy, an installation that has since toured the country and was exhibited at the former Ketchum-Sun Valley Ski and Heritage Museum in 2012. The exhibit returns to Ketchum for one night only as part of the Sheep Tales Gathering, surrounding The Argyros stage and welcoming attendees in the lobby, where the two artists will be on hand to discuss their work.
“Many of the arborglyphs we recorded are in remote locations where the sheepherders lived,” says Swope. “It can be difficult terrain that not everyone can access. That was one of our intentions—to bring the grove to the gallery.”
Swope tromps in the woods creating plaster or silicone casts of the actual arborglyphs, from which he crafts facsimiles. The installation’s intent is to bring the grove into the gallery.
A Virtual Reality experience at the Festival’s Folklife Fair in Hailey on Saturday, October 11, provides another opportunity to experience history from the vantage of those who made it. Under the guidance of Daniel Fergus from UNR’s @One Digital Media & Technology Center, a seven-minute VR journey presents a day in the life of a Basque sheepherder.
“It’s meant to introduce us to some of the activities and life experiences these men encountered,” says Fergus.
Objects and tools digitized from the University of Nevada, Reno, collection are part of the interactive experience, from stoves to cooking pots, traps to sheep shears, wineskins to tobacco tins. Viewers will also walk into an aspen grove featuring reproductions of arborglyph rubbings originally captured on muslin and black wax, now brought back to life in VR.

“Working on this project has deepened my appreciation for the challenges Basque sheepherders faced as they adapted to life in a new country,” Fergus says. “The rugged, isolated landscape and long stretches of solitude must have been incredibly difficult to endure. I hope this VR experience, even in a small way, can help convey some of the hardships they had to overcome.”
Through these different Festival offerings, attendees will be put in the shoes of the Basque men who created arborglyphs over the past century and a half.
“These carvings were an interesting way for the sheepherders to tell their story,” says Bieter. “Like many immigrant groups, we don’t think about their everyday lives much; we just enjoy the benefits of the work they do. Through these artworks, though, we’re standing where they stood. We’re honoring them and the stories they had to share.”
If you encounter arborglyphs, please take a moment to enjoy and respect them. The U.S. Forest Service asks that travelers today leave no new carvings of their own, as irresponsible carving can harm the tree and reduce its lifespan.
The John Peavey Legacy Fund Student Scholarship for 2025
by Lori Williams
Blaine County lost a true icon last year in John Peavey—family man, thirdgeneration sheep rancher, national agricultural advocate, Idaho State Senator, and beloved co-founder of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival. John had a deep love for his sheep, his ranch, and especially educating others about the animals and the land. His way of life defined who he was—a defender of heritage, history, and tradition in the saddle, a gentleman, storyteller, friend, and, along with his wife Diane, a beloved co-founder and supporter of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, now an internationally recognized event. The Festival was very special
to John as it allowed him to share his love of the sheep, the land, and his many stories, which helped educate and inspire residents and visitors from around the world.
As a tribute to John, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival established The John Peavey Legacy Fund in 2024. Donations to this fund will support an annual scholarship and help preserve John’s legacy by advancing the Festival’s mission to gather, celebrate, present, and preserve the history and cultures of sheepherding in Idaho and the West. The Trailing of the Sheep Festival is excited to announce the inaugural 2025 scholarship winner as 18-year-old Luke Acquistapace from Carey, Idaho, who attends the University of Idaho this fall to study agricultural economics.
Acquistapace was born and raised in Hollister, California, where he helped raise cattle on his family ranch. “I have grown up in an agricultural family where we farmed hay and raised beef,” he says. “I love the lifestyle—it has made me who I am today. But I want to study agricultural economics so I can learn how to most effectively run and operate my own farming and livestock operation.” Acquistapace currently works on his parents’ farm in Carey, where they raise over 800 cows and farm more than 1,500 acres of hay.
Acquistapace was awarded $500 from the Festival for the 2025-2026 academic year, to be used for college-related
expenses, including tuition, fees, housing, and books, while pursuing a degree or certificate in the field of agriculture.
Eligible students had to have graduated from high school this past spring and permanently reside in Idaho, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, or Nevada—states recognized with large sheep ranching communities. Applicants had to describe in 2,5004,000 words why they should be awarded the scholarship, including a focus on their intended pursuits in the field of agriculture. A committee comprising members of the Peavey Family and the Festival Board reviewed applications and selected the scholarship winner.
Growing up in an agricultural environment, Acquistapace has experienced first-hand the struggles it brings. “If I can be wellversed in the economic side of agriculture, then I will not only be able to more effectively run my own business, but I will also be able to give back to my parents and the surrounding businesses,” he says. “I am fascinated with learning what role agriculture plays in the current economy and how I can contribute through my own agricultural business. The cattle and hay markets are very unpredictable, so it can be hard to know when the market will crash or boom, making it hard to know when to buy or sell.”
Acquistapace understands that a future in agriculture will be very challenging, but he still loves the work. He hopes that through this field of study, he can help prevent future struggles for himself and his family’s operations.

Enjoying Wool Fest with Jan Bittenbender
People love discovering or seeking out products at the Trailing of the Sheep Festival’s Wool Fest, and they also enjoy learning how to work with wool. Over three days, from Thursday, October 9 to Saturday, October 11, Wool Fest offers several classes, including introductions to felting, knitting, fiber art, spinning, weaving, and more. In addition to making ornaments, hats, scarves, snow globes, and other items, wool vendors provide a wide variety of products to browse and purchase at the Folklife Fair. Wool Fest is one of the many features of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival that highlights how sheep contribute to life and culture.
As a wool artist, Trailing of the Sheep Festival’s Wool Fest Coordinator, Jan Bittenbender, creates an experience for those interested in learning more about how to create with wool and the process of how the fiber comes together for knitting and felting.
“It’s a lot of fun, and I’m very happy to be part of it,” says Bittenbender. “People love wool, and it is a part of our lives. Through our Wool Fest classes, we explore the process of making wool sweaters, felted dolls, or scarves. We teach some of the basic principles you need to know about working with wool, and with the wide variety of teachers we have participating in Wool Fest, our classes can cover the beginning aspects to learning how to create with wool.”
Before becoming a wool artist, Bittenbender was a jewelry artist. When she attended the Festival for the first time with a friend, she was captivated by the wool items and felting, especially the process of making a felted picture. Self-taught, Bittenbender began creating felted pictures, which she sold at the Fair, eventually becoming an instructor and coordinator of the Festival’s Wool Fest.
“We are all creative and possess that energy, and in a large group, your creativity peaks, inspiring you to pursue it.”
— Jan Bittenbender
“With my jewelry and beading background, I was able to incorporate those skills into my felting pictures,” she says. “With the classes we offer, you can learn the entire process of working with wool. Getting down and dirty with nature is wonderful and important, which is why I love the Trailing of the Sheep Festival. When you’re at a fair, there’s a collective sense of togetherness and joy focused on one specific thing, and that is contagious. We are all creative and possess that energy, and in a large group, your creativity peaks, inspiring you to pursue it.”
Bittenbender adds, “With wool, you can incorporate other natural fibers, and the possibilities are endless. Fiber art is seen as both craft and folk art, but gaining recognition as fine art is still a goal, and it’s becoming more accepted and visible as it continues to evolve.”
Wool Fest is made possible by many people, including the Trailing of the Sheep Festival’s community partners Knit + Needle and Sun Valley Fabric Granary.

Lamb is a highly regarded meat the world over, serving as one of the prominent proteins and the center of cuisine in many cultures. In southcentral Idaho, lamb is revered just as it is around the globe. Award-winning and celebrated Wood River Valley chefs, year after year, prepare exotic and delicious lamb dishes, which is one of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival’s most enjoyed elements. For 2025, the options for lamb tasting, dining, and more are plentiful, but space is limited, so sign up fast so you don’t miss a bite.
As the popularity of lamb cuisine continues to grow each year during the Festival, this year features three Farm to Table dinners at The Sage School in Hailey. This center is a premium catering company serving the Wood River Valley community with a focus on locally and regionally sourced foods. Each four-course dinner will highlight local lamb and menu selections. Lamb ranchers will join these dinners to discuss sheep ranching in Idaho and answer questions.
This year’s dinners will also include wines from Scoria Vineyards, located in the Snake River Valley, founded in 2014 by an Idaho native with four generations of agricultural heritage. In addition, each dinner will showcase lamb from a different Idaho ranch, including Darby Northcott’s 3/D Ranch in Carey, The Bean Family’s Lava Lake Lamb in Idaho’s Pioneer Mountains, and Liz & Brett Wilder’s Boise River Lamb in Caldwell.
The dinners take place on October 7, 8, and 9 at 6:30pm. The October 9 dinner is the Founders’ Legacy Farm to Table Dinner in Honor of Diane and John Peavey, which is sold out but there is a waitlist.
Each year, several Valley chefs present irresistible cooking classes focused on the many delicious and exotic ways of preparing and serving lamb. The Sun Valley Culinary Institute’s Chef Paul Brown will showcase a lamb shoulder bocadillo with muhamarra, labneh, and quick pickles on potato brioche.
Chef Mary Clare Griffin will prepare a Basque piment d’espelette lamb rack with Moroccan apricot, almond, and pomegranate Israeli couscous. Chef Chris Kastner of CK’s Real Food will make lamb kofta, and Chefs Kathleen and Fiona Bean will create Lava Lake lamb curry. In addition, Fromager Kendall Russell of Lark’s Meadow Farms will demonstrate how to make ricotta and yogurt. Classes take place throughout the Festival on multiple days. Check the schedule for dates, times, locations, and availability.
Taste the finest American Lamb bites from top restaurants in the Wood River Valley, including nationally recognized and award-winning chefs and dining spots. Tastings start at 4:30pm and conclude when all the bites are gone, usually within an hour. Enjoy a variety of lamb flavors from Valley restaurants, caterers, and markets, such as lamb shank agnolotti with lamb caramel and olive gremolata, lamb tacos, lamb pizza, dumplings, skewers, chile stew, Bolognese, and more. Beverages are available for purchase by participating establishments and in The Argyros lobby.

In 1960, a group of Boise Basque Americans traveled to the Spanish Basque country. When they returned, they formed a dance group called the Oinkari, a name derived from “oinak,” meaning “feet,” and “arin,” meaning “fast” or “light.” Today, the well-known Oinkari Basque Dancers are the descendants of the original founders, carrying on the traditions of their ancient homeland. The Oinkari Basque Dancers perform alongside musicians trained in traditional Basque music and instruments. Their repertoire includes various styles and rhythms of Basque music played on traditional instruments such as the txistu, button accordions, pandareta, and other Basque instruments.
Many Peruvians migrated to Idaho to work as sheepherders. After most Basque sheepherders left for other jobs and careers, the Peruvians filled the ranchers’ needs. Even as many Peruvians transitioned from sheepherding to become local businessmen or change careers, many of today’s sheepherders are still Peruvian. Performing at the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, this group of Peruvian musicians has been together for several years, blending Andean music with contemporary dance music from Peru.
Scottish immigrants played a key role in the early sheep ranching of Idaho. Bringing their experience from Scotland, they mostly started as herders and ranch hands, but several established sheep farms, and The Boise Highlanders remind us of this Scottish heritage. Formed in 1961, The Boise Highlanders are among the oldest pipe bands in the Northwest. The Highland drums, often seen as the most intricate form of snare drumming, complement the pipers, while dancers join the musicians performing the Highland fling and jigs. Pipers and drummers wear the Davidson tartan, and the dancers choose their own tartans. This popular group performs regularly throughout the region. Many years ago, The Boise Highlanders made a special “sheep” cover for their pipes to honor the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, which they use only at this event.
Each band member is unique, contributing to the sound and feel of the Sheep Bridge Jumpers (SBJ). Cam Bouiss, formerly of Finn Riggins, is the backbone of the band, adding intricacy and ingenuity to the driving, yet sometimes tender, folk rhythms beneath. Connor Wade, on violin and vocals, creates a dreamy soundscape with beautiful textures filled with deep, reverberating harmonic tones, and occasionally sharp staccato plucking. Mark Oliver, on guitar and vocals, brings punk rhythms and heartfelt lyrics to many SBJ songs. New members include Pat Sebastian of Howling Squirrel on bass and Mariah Priddy of Makayla King singing. The lineup is rounded out by Antonio Vazquez of Tylor and the Train Robbers, who occasionally plays lead guitar or mandolin.

Cindy and Gary have been playing at the Trailing of the Sheep Festival’s closing party since it started.
The dynamic songwriting and guitar duo of Raul Vandenberg and Bill Sprong spin stories that feel like a perilous journey across the sagebrush-covered Idaho trails, leading over the mountain—but perhaps not back again. Scott Seaward hits the drums as if they owe him money, and bassist Jeff London keeps this out-of-control trainwreck on the rails just long enough for it to release its breathless, bruised passengers onto the station floor.
The 29th Trailing of the Sheep Festival takes place October 8-12, 2025, celebrating a unique tradition of sheep, herders, history, and food.

Footlight celebrates its history with Hilarie Neely and enters a new era
Hilarie Neely’s first visit to the Wood River Valley was with Portland-based dance company, Portland Dance Theatre which the Sun Valley Center for the Arts (now SVMoA) invited in the late 1970s for a week-long residency of master classes, school performances, and two culminating events at the Sun Valley Opera House.
“We had a great week, and the night before the last show, I met my husband. The rest is history,” she says.
Growing up outside Chicago, Neely discovered dance in sixth grade during a Camp Fire Girls of America project. “By eighth grade, I thought: this is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life. I just knew it.”
She went on to study at Southern Methodist University, where she earned a BFA in Dance immersing herself in modern dance and dance history, and then pursued a professional career in the Pacific Northwest. But Neely always knew she wanted to teach—imparting to others what she’d learned through the Cecchetti method about training, technique, and the meaning behind movement. by Martha Williams
“Dance education is way more than taking a ballet or tap class,” she says. “Dance is an understanding of how we as humans create stories, how we got to where we are, and where we’re going next.”
In 1984, after teaching for several years in the valley, Neely knew it was time to pursue her own thing. Resisting naming a school after herself, she started playing around with words that would convey a range of possibilities and landed on Footlight Dance Centre. “To me the name felt light and lively, and I wanted people to feel that way when they came to the school,” she explains.
For more than 40 years, Footlight has instructed thousands of students in ballet, modern/contemporary dance, jazz, hip-hop, tap, and creative movement. Each year, the Centre also brings performances to local schools and the community.
Beyond the studio, Neely has served as a dance consultant for the Idaho Department of Education, helping to develop state curriculum for dance in grades K-12 and training elementary
teachers to incorporate movement into their classrooms. She has also worked with the Idaho Commission on the Arts, conducted residencies around the state, and helped expand the places where Idahoans experience art.
“Dance used to be integral to everyday life,” she says. “It was a part of P.E. programs until the 1990s. I wanted to keep that going, to help people see what dance can offer.”
Neely is especially passionate about exposing children to dance at an early age, encouraging participation and appreciation. “When elementary students are exposed to things, it shapes how they learn and perceive their communities,” she says. “And when art and music aren’t in schools, people’s biases can become very strong.”
The goal isn’t to turn everyone into a dancer, she says, but she believes that exposure can help kids become more accepting of those who do dance and perhaps help them appreciate the form a bit more. “If you have that exposure, it may change your life,” she adds.
Neely’s work has also extended beyond the classroom, from helping to establish the Wood River Arts Alliance and growing collaboration among local organizations, to chairing the 2012 renovation of the performing arts theater at the Community Campus.
Now with studios in Hailey and Ketchum offering beginning to advanced classes for ages 4-18, summer workshops, performances each May, and opportunities for students to learn from guest artists, Footlight has grown into a premier dance centre and professional training ground.
Neely, meanwhile, has become known as “the dance lady” wherever she goes around town, thanks to her dedication to providing a wide palette of possibilities for her students.
This fall, Neely hands the reins of Artistic Director to Mackenzie King, who came to Footlight several years ago from Chicago, where she’d founded Moonwater Dance Project after graduating from the Conservatory of Dance at SUNY Purchase. Footlight is also becoming a 501(c)3, expanding the Centre’s possibilities for funding, scholarships, and opportunities to bring in more artists throughout the year.
“This community loves the arts,” King says. “Dance is flourishing here, and with this change to our structure, we’ll be able to better support its future.”
Neely isn’t dancing away just yet, though, as she’ll stay involved in Footlight and continue advocating for arts funding and school programs.
“Between teaching four-year-olds, who at the end of class give you a hug, and the graduating kids who return the next year saying, ‘Thank you, Ms. Hilarie, for all you helped instill in me,’ it’s all been very rewarding,” she says.
With 250 students in Footlight programs this school year, Neely and King are excited about the next—more offerings, new supporters, expanded collaborations—and staying light on their feet into the future.

Historically rooted in the study of plants, botanical gardens have evolved into vital centers for ecological stewardship, community education, research, and local employment. The Sawtooth Botanical Garden (SBG), located just south of Ketchum, embodies all of these qualities.
Founded in 1994 by a passionate group of gardeners and environmentalists, SBG has grown into a cherished resource, offering year-round educational programs, public and private event space, and a place of beauty and reflection for locals and visitors alike.
Now, after three decades of cultivating community, SBG is embarking on one of its most ambitious endeavors yet: the $800,000 purchase of the fiveacre parcel it has called home since its inception. With strong support from staff, board, and donors, the Garden has already raised over half of its goal. Purchasing its property is the first priority, and funding projects and initiatives comes next.
The campaign now enters its public phase, seeking an additional $3 million to complete the land purchase and fund long-envisioned enhancements that reflect SBG’s commitment to education, ecology, and culture.
This campaign is integral to the continued growth of SBG. Under the leadership of Executive Director Jen Smith, we can expect to see long-awaited updates. While the Garden has not always had a steady community to stand on, now, with Smith’s deep understanding of fundraising and communitybuilding, the Wood River Valley gets to watch it grow.
“We have heard many times in the last 30 years of the Garden’s existence that donors would be much more comfortable—and generous—with their support if the Garden owned the land on which it exists,” says Executive Director Jen Smith.
In addition to garden enhancements, the campaign will fund critical updates to the visitor center, including paved sidewalks and parking, and the expansion of its commercial kitchen to better support events, classes, and rentals.
The Garden’s physical transformation coincides with a period of strong leadership and vision. Smith brought years of experience in resource management, grant writing, and community engagement to her role as executive director.
“I suppose I started this job at the perfect time in my life,” she reflects, “when I could re-engage my creative instincts and drive to make something successful while enjoying the challenge of running a small nonprofit.”
Previously the long-serving director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Ketchum, Smith was also the city’s first, and one of Idaho’s first, certified Urban Forest Professionals. Her work with local nonprofits and philanthropic programs laid the foundation for what she calls a “serendipitous connection” to the Garden.
Since its humble beginnings in the 1990s, SBG has weathered many seasons of change. In recent years—following the passing of beloved donor Dayle Fowler—the Garden launched a new series of incomegenerating initiatives to build financial stability and deepen community engagement. This included the introduction of admission and membership fees, along with a slate of thoughtfully curated events designed to bring people together.
These “boutique events” now range from vibrant Pride celebrations and the annual “Walk, Wine & ART” fundraiser to the beloved Dark Sky Dinners, which honor the region’s designation as part of the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve.
“In cultivating these boutique events, we knew they had to be leading-edge, unique, and meaningful both experientially and educationally. Additionally, they were designed to bring different and complementary audiences into the Garden during seasonal bloom times and for second-homers and visitors to rub shoulders with those of us fortunate enough to call this place home.”
Reflecting on what has prepared her to guide the Garden through this moment, she adds, “Watching kids grow into adults with kids of their own, knowing the oldtimers who are leaving us but who left a legacy of positive impact on the community, meeting the quirky people, the artists, the creative souls, and the scoundrels alike that make this place special—I suppose that’s any place. But this is my place and my community.”
This campaign is not only intended to meet short-term goals, but it is also a pivotal step toward securing the Garden’s long-term future. Alongside the growth of the Dayle Fowler Legacy Endowment Fund, its success will help ensure that SBG remains a cornerstone of education, community-building, and the celebration of central Idaho’s natural beauty for generations to come.
To learn more or make a donation, visit sbgarden.org or contact info@sbgarden.org. You’re also invited to attend Gimlets in the Garden, SBG’s annual gala fundraiser, on September 25, an evening of celebration in support of the Garden’s growth and future.
“Our boutique events had to be leading-edge, unique, and meaningful— both experientially and educationally.”

It was 1914 when the first official school session took place in Stanley, as four students boarded in a teacher’s ranch home in the Basin for a term of six months. Through the decades, educational opportunities ebbed and flowed in this remote mountain town, which endured the harshness of weather, isolation, and economic twists and turns.
... the 2025-2026 school year will be the first time that the Stanley School can keep high school students.
Even in modern times, the area has only offered kindergarten through eighth grade. In the past 15 years alone, more than 40 students who would have attended high school have left. Those who choose to stay can take a bus from Stanley for the challenging drive along the Salmon River to attend school in Challis. Others might make the trip over Galena to attend school at Wood River. Now, with a new classroom addition and new communication technology that allows a livestream connection to a Challis High School classroom, the 2025-2026 school year will be the first time that the Stanley School can keep high school students.
From lemonade stands and baked goods sales to community fundraising events, the Stanley community, with help from the nonprofit Stanley School Parents Association, poured their heart and soul into raising more than $1 million
for school improvements and educational enhancements. Additionally, using funds from Idaho House Bill 521 School Facilities and COVID Relief, the Challis School District contributed $756,000.
“After brainstorming the needs at Stanley with input from the community and the Parents Association, we determined priorities for two additional classrooms and a library,” says Lani Rembelski, Challis School District Superintendent. The expansion and remodel were completed this past year, and additional raised funds enabled the installation of new windows in existing classrooms, an ADA-compliant adult bathroom, an updated break room and kitchen, and the replacement of the gym floor, which contained asbestos. Updated playground equipment and wall-mounted tables and benches, for easier transitioning of the lunchroom to gym use, will be installed as remaining funds become available.
The modern Stanley School, which originally consisted of two classrooms and a multi-purpose room, was built in 1978 and now serves approximately 24 students from kindergarten through eighth grade. This school year, one ninth grader will participate in livestream technology, and a grade will be added each year as needed. Rembelski explains, “Along with four other districts, we received a grant from Polycom, a program focused on developing video, voice, and content collaboration and communication technology, with the goal of linking with other districts. Essentially, Stanley high school students participate virtually in Challis classrooms, receiving instruction from certified teachers for their high school credits, enabling them to graduate from the Challis School District.”
Stanley’s third-through fifth-grade teacher, Samantha Forsgren, has been teaching in Stanley for four years. She understands what it’s like to grow up in a remote mountain town. When she was four years old, her parents moved to Lower Stanley after purchasing the grocery store and motel, which the family still owns today. She attended the Stanley School, then went to Challis for high school. She made a 1.5-hour one-way daily trip along the Salmon River, but most families would rather not. When Forsgren started kindergarten, there were 50 students in the school. By the time she graduated eighth grade, only six remained.
Regardless of size, the Stanley School family has always been a close-knit group. The relatively small number of students means they probably will have the same teacher for multiple grades.
Conversely, the teacher can adapt to better meet their individual needs. Forsgren says that the older students are always helpful to the younger children as well, defining what many have dubbed the Stanley School as “home school away from home.”
“The parents and students stepped up and helped with the fundraising process, but the community has always been so supportive, not only with fundraising, but many in the community have also volunteered their time to teach different skills to the students,” says Forsgren. “I believe the community also recognizes the value of a high school, because more families will be able to stay long-term. Those are our firefighters, our emergency crews, and our workforce. This is a game-changer for our school and our community.”
The Stanley School Parents Association offers a ski program, swimming lessons, visiting artists, theater companies, local and regional field trips, audio-visual tools, classroom equipment, and the production of an annual yearbook. They regularly accept donations to support their enrichment activities.

“This serene space brings a minimalistic, modern, and earthy aesthetic,” says Marina Broschofsky, owner of Red Door Home + Design. “Combining natural wood tables, sleek black chairs, muted artwork, soft lighting, and a hint of nature with a potted tree, the room exudes a calm and sophisticated ambiance with an emphasis on organic materials.”
Occasionally, a home trend becomes so popular that it’s hard to resist. For fall, Sun Valley interior designers and decorators are sharing ideas, concepts, and decor looks to inspire friends and family to gather and relax in the same space, whether it’s a favorite room like the kitchen, the living room, or a dining table with chairs that turn everyday meals into special occasions. Bringing people together is a Sun Valley valued tradition, especially in great style.
At Allison Paige Design, we lean into a balanced mix of old and new, clean alongside handmade,” says Allison Connolly, owner of Allison Paige Interior Design. “Take this kitchen in a modernleaning home. We have combined white oak cabinetry with slab doors and minimal hardware, with handmade Zellige tile. We believe a thoughtful curation of finishes is preferable to a strict adherence to finishes that all come from the same bucket.”

In most dining rooms, the first view of a chair is from behind—especially in open-concept spaces,” says Studio Boden’s Rosemary Spiller and Erika Blank. “That’s why we love choosing dining chairs with interesting back details or fabrics, like the leather strap and horse-bit hardware in this Sun Valley project. It adds sculptural interest when the chairs are pushed in, making the space feel more thoughtfully designed from every angle.”
“Trends are trendy, and fads come and go,” says Redeux Decor owner Heather McGregor. “Classic furniture and decor have timeless staying power, and it shows in this project we completed a few years back. It is still relevant today and just as beautiful as ever!”

St. Luke’s Wood River is excited to welcome two exceptional psychiatrists to its behavioral health team: Dr. Christopher Doxey and Dr. Katie Quayle.
Dr. Christopher Doxey joins St. Luke’s after completing his psychiatry residency at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. Originally from Utah, Dr. Doxey holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Brigham Young University and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Campbell University. His academic journey reflects a commitment to understanding mental health from both scientific and humanistic perspectives.
“I have wanted to become a doctor for as long as I can remember,” Dr. Doxey shares. “The more I studied, the more fascinated I became with the brain. That led me to complete a Ph.D. in neuroscience before entering medical school.”
Doxey’s clinical interests include treatment-resistant depression and bipolar disorder. He has extensive training in neuromodulation techniques, including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), which he will be able to recommend for patients in need.
His approach to care is deeply collaborative and rooted in the osteopathic philosophy of treating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. “I believe that truly listening to each other will help us find the best solutions to individual mental health challenges,” he says. “There is never a magic pill. We need to address mental health through all aspects of general health.”
Dr. Doxey’s passion for rural medicine was sparked during a rotation in a small town with only one family practice doctor. That experience solidified his desire to serve in a close-knit community. “I knew then that the place for my future would be practicing as the ‘smalltown doctor,’” he says. On joining St. Luke’s, he comments, “I was impressed with St. Luke’s throughout the whole interview process, and everything I hear about them has been very positive. I’m pleased to be working with a health system that truly seems to have people, both patients and staff, as priorities.”
He and his wife, Carlie, are thrilled to be moving closer to family and settling into the Sun Valley lifestyle. “The skiing drew me in first,” he admits, “but the real sense of community was what ultimately made me want to live and work here.”
Outside of work, Doxey enjoys music, theater, and the arts. He plays piano and sang in the BYU Men’s Chorus. He’s also an avid skier and nature enthusiast. A unique fact: he speaks Icelandic fluently, having lived in Iceland for two years during a mission trip.
“We need to address mental health through all aspects of general health.”
“It’s important to consider the child in the context of their environment, school, family, and
community.”
—Dr. Katie Quayle, M.D.
Dr. Katie Quayle is no stranger to the Wood River Valley. She previously served as a pediatrician at St. Luke’s Wood River before leaving to pursue specialized training in psychiatry and child psychiatry. Now, she returns with a renewed focus and expanded skill set, ready to serve the community she loves.
“I loved being a pediatrician at SLWR and living and working in the Wood River Valley,” Quayle says. “It was a very difficult decision to leave the valley to gain additional training, but as I was seeing more and more kids struggling with mental health issues in my practice, I felt pulled to obtain dedicated training in psychiatry/ child psychiatry so I could provide more comprehensive care for these patients. I was thrilled this winter when I learned St. Luke’s was recruiting for a child psychiatrist in Hailey.”
Quayle completed a unique three-year fellowship at University Hospitals/Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio, through the Post Pediatric Portal Program. This intensive training qualifies her to treat both adults and children, though her true passion lies in child and adolescent psychiatry.
“I think my training now as both a pediatrician and child psychiatrist gives me a unique perspective in treating kids,” Quayle explains. “There is often overlap between physical and mental health symptoms in children, and I think it’s valuable to have a background in both.”
Her philosophy of care is holistic and family-centered. “It’s important to consider the child in the context of their environment, school, family, and community,” she says. “While medication can be useful, I also believe in the importance of a healthy diet, exercise, time outdoors, and adequate sleep. Therapy can be powerful and transformative.”
Quayle is excited to reconnect with the valley and contribute to its mental health services. “I’m open to getting to know what the valley needs and hope to become part of the team here to treat patients’ mental health,” she says.
She and her husband, Forrest, are eager to share the beauty of the area with their children, Liv (5) and Wilder (3), both of whom were born in Ketchum. “We’re excited to introduce them to all of the spots we love, especially Galena Lodge,” she says.
An avid trail runner, hiker, and cross-country skier, Quayle is looking forward to once again living and working in a place where nature is just outside the door.
“The addition of two psychiatrists marks a significant milestone in our commitment to expanding access to timely, expert mental health care,” says Megan Tanous, Chief Development Officer, SLWR Foundation. “This investment not only strengthens our clinical capacity but also reinforces the goals of our Mental Well-Being Initiative—ensuring that individuals in our community receive the compassionate, comprehensive support they need to thrive.”
Dr. Doxey and Dr. Quayle bring not only impressive credentials but also a deep commitment to communitybased care. Their arrival marks a significant step forward in expanding mental health services in the Wood River Valley.
“I hope to be an advocate for mental wellness,” says Doxey, “not only by providing recommendations in the office, but through community outreach and education.”
Quayle echoes that sentiment, “My goal is to create a safe space where children feel comfortable sharing their feelings and to come up with a plan as a team with the child and their family.”
St. Luke’s Wood River is thrilled to welcome these two compassionate and skilled professionals to the valley. Their presence will undoubtedly enrich the lives of patients and families throughout the region.
Dr. Quayle will begin seeing patients in September, while Dr. Doxey will begin seeing patients in October. They join a dedicated group of professionals including:
Alison Burpee, LCSW
Priscilla Bake, LCSW
Hillary Godsill, LCSW
Sare “Sadie” Macquarrie, LPC

Dr. Molly Brown on wellness
“When you treat the brain and nervous system with precision, the body will heal.”
—Dr. Molly Brown
by Dr. Molly Brown, CENTERED Neurologically-Based Natural Medicine
The global wellness industry continues to grow at a fast pace. It is a sector now worth over $5 trillion, and this number signals a growing cultural interest in health, as well as deep dissatisfaction with conventional systems. For all this growth, the trending biohacks, retreats, and the dozens of morning supplements, the question remains: Why are people still so sick, stressed, anxious, inflamed, and exhausted?
This is because often no real solutions are offered, and no machine, supplement, green juice, or IV offers effective solutions. Embedded in results-based techniques, they are an integrated part of a comprehensive approach, but not alone. We must emphasize solution-based care that addresses the root of human dysfunction.
At CENTERED, we believe the future of true health is precise, neurologically-based, deeply personalized, intelligent, and solution-based care.
Wellness has become a trillion-dollar promise, but it lacks a consistent and comprehensive delivery system. It sells a promise and a feeling—calm, radiant, optimized—but too often lacks the tools, systems, and neurological precision to create lasting, physiological change.
People bounce between supplements, labs, energy work, and lifestyle plans with minimal transformation. Why? Because most wellness offerings are generic. They fail to understand that the nervous system and brain are the master regulators of all health—physical, emotional, and cognitive. No amount of supplements, no new supplement line, and no IV will give a comprehensive correction.
At CENTERED, we offer a model of care that is root-causeoriented, data-informed, and neurologically-based.
A biomechanical and neurological system that identifies and corrects inhibited muscles caused by trauma, stress, or repetitive strain. This re-establishes functional strength, coordination, and structural alignment—essential for physical longevity and brainbody balance.
QNRT (QUANTUM NEURO RESET THERAPY)
A cutting-edge therapy that resets neurological patterns held in the subconscious brain, often caused by unresolved stress, emotional trauma, or environmental overwhelm. This technique enables the nervous system to regulate, adapt, and transition from survival mode to healing mode.
When combined with PEMF therapy, infrared therapy, neurofeedback, LiveO2, NanoVi, and brain-based nutritional protocols, we offer solutions that continue to improve over time, leading to a return to vibrancy, clarity, and structural strength.
When you treat the brain and nervous system with precision, the body will heal.
We do not guess. We do not generalize. We assess. We track. We correct. And we teach our clients how to stay in alignment with their vitality, long after they’ve left our clinic. Because the goal is not dependency on a provider—the goal is sovereignty in your health
The wellness industry has inspired millions to prioritize their health—which is truly remarkable. But inspiration without solutions leads to frustration, lost hope, and discouragement.
Our approach offers care that is results-driven and deeply integrative, emphasizing that the nervous system is central to every protocol, with the desired result of transformation on every level. Our clients often experience improvements in their symptoms, and they frequently wake up to a newfound desire for health. They experience higher energy, improved focus, stronger muscles, better sleep, deeper calm, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Wellness must move beyond products and into solutionbased care with a model that works—results. For the highperforming mother, the recovering athlete, the entrepreneur on the edge of burnout, and the autoimmune warrior who refuses to give up.
For the results of this approach, please visit our website at drmollybrown.com

Mending Across Borders &
Using the idea of mending—both metaphorical and literal—to consider multiple questions. What is it to live in two cultures or between two cultures postmigration? How can migration be both a moment of rupture and one of healing? What is the possibility of repairing landscapes and environments harmed by human activity?
Artist Maria de Los Angeles, Assistant Director of Painting and Printmaking at Yale School of Art, visited the Wood River Valley in August 2024 and led public workshops as part of the creation of new work for the exhibition, which will include paintings, prints, and a wearable sculpture—a dress that celebrates biculturalism while recognizing the challenges it presents. Co-curated by Courtney Gilbert and Erin Joyce.

Douglas Aagard
Artists’ Reception Friday, August 29, 5-7:30pm
Utah landscape painter Douglas Aagard is known for his bold use of color, texture, and light. His subjects are as varied as the Utah landscape itself, consisting of farmland scenes, maple trees bursting with color, and mountain peaks. Alongside Aagard’s work, Kneeland Gallery will feature a selection of new work from its gallery artists.

In his series Day to Night, photographer Stephen Wilkes redefines the boundaries of photographic storytelling by collapsing time into a single, visually immersive experience. From a fixed point, Wilkes photographs a location for up to 36 hours, documenting the ever-shifting rhythm of light, movement, and life within a specific location. The result is a collection of up to 2,000 images, which he meticulously narrows down to 20-100. Through a careful compositional process, the selections coalesce into a singular image, inviting us to experience what Wilkes accomplished in 36 hours of photography.
Wilkes invites viewers into a world where morning, afternoon, dusk, and night coexist, revealing patterns and connections otherwise lost to linear perception. These epic large-scale landscape photographs stand at the intersection of fine art, documentary, and conceptual photography, offering viewers a new way to perceive time and place. Wilkes’s work bridges the narrative power of documentary with the aesthetic grace of fine art.
Born in Brazil and based in Hawaii, painter Thai Mainhard is naturally drawn to the rich patterns and textures of the jungle. Painting is an instinctive extension of Mainhard’s being. Her newest body of work explores colorful botanicals and their vessels. In each painting, tension builds as she captures the rich textures, vibrant colors, and lush patterns that comprise each emotionally rich, abstracted composition.
An intuitive painter, Mainhard is connected to each brushstroke, each slash of paint, and each composition. Beginning inwardly, her process employs sensation over concept, making each mark a lived moment and each painting an extension of herself. For Mainhard, painting is inseparable from life itself. Every gesture carries the imprint of her experience. Asked how long a piece takes to complete, she replies simply: “Since birth.” Her work unfolds as a continuous becoming—a mirror and portal where memory, identity, and imagination merge into an ever-expanding present.
Broschofsky Galleries presents Western Pop: Icons & Irony, a fall exhibition showcasing works by Rudi Broschofsky, Billy Schenck, and Andy Warhol. Combining bold colors, satire, and Western iconography, the show examines how Pop Art reinterprets cowboy mythology and American nostalgia. From Broschofsky’s layered prints to Schenck’s cinematic cowboy scenes and Warhol’s iconic spins on Americana, Western Pop links the modern with the classic.

Scenes and Images
Through September 19
OCHI is pleased to present Scenes and Images, an exhibition of new works by New York-based artist Benjamin Langford. This marks Langford’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Scenes and Images will be on view at OCHI, located at 119 Lewis Street in Ketchum, from August 8 to September 19, 2025.
In Scenes and Images, Langford presents a body of work that hybridizes painting and photography to explore the idea of nature after the death of nature. The artist’s photographs— ranging from dioramas and zoos to arboretums and butterfly pavilions—serve as the basis for the paintings on view. Reflecting on constructed environments shaped by our idealized projections, Langford reveals vestigial fantasies of the natural world.
In his analytic and anthropologically-charged landscapes, Langford references the romanticism of the Hudson River School and the softfocus mystique of pictorialist photography. In works like Twilight (2024), the grand pastoral view recedes like a theatrical backdrop, while tangled branches overtake the foreground—a reversal of the
classic frontier gaze, where the sublime is now elusive, distant, and inaccessible. Utilizing photographs, printed on canvas to serve as underpaintings, Langford paints into the landscapes, muddying the fidelity of these idyll worlds.
Beneath the beauty of these constructions lies a quiet mourning—for the loss of
unfiltered connection and the erosion of awe in a world increasingly flattened by mediation. Yet the works resist cynicism, seeking to re-enchant, to reclaim feeling even within the artificial. They suggest that even illusions can offer moments of truth—and that wonder, though transformed, is still within reach.

This September, Gail Severn Gallery presents an array of exhibitions that invite profound engagement with nature, memory, and artistic mastery.
Joseph Rossano’s Of Water exhibition explores the vital yet fragile world of aquatic ecosystems. Featuring a breathtaking installation of mirrored, hand-blown glass salmon forms, the centerpiece suspends from the gallery’s 24-foot ceiling, creating an immersive “salmon ball” that viewers can walk through. These ghost-like migrations, alongside Rossano’s graphite paintings of wildlife, including salmon, trout, and other riparian species such as otters, ducks, and deer, powerfully evoke the interconnectedness of species and the profound impact of dwindling salmon populations. The exhibition includes photography by Laura McPhee, sculpture by Pamela DeTuncq, and paintings by David deVillier and Berkeley Hoerr.
Diane Andrews Hall presents an exquisite collection of paintings that blend meticulous photorealism with poetic context. Known for her deft attention to detail, Hall renders birds with astonishing precision, layering them over found surfaces such as vintage sheet music and topographical maps of Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains. These unexpected substrates act as quiet collaborators—evoking the convergence of nature, culture, and memory. The result is work that feels simultaneously archival and alive, echoing both the fragility and resilience of the natural world.
Anne Siems’ ongoing series, Fox and Friends, features ethereal figures sharing space with foxes, owls, and other woodland creatures. Siems’ work blends folk art, fairy tale, and dreamlike imagery, creating intimate narratives that feel both timeless and deeply personal. Alongside Siems are Margaret Keelan, whose weathered ceramic figures tenderly cradle animals, evoking themes of innocence and resilience; Robert McCauley, known for his haunting bear portraits that confront the viewer with questions of ecology and conscience; and Theodore Waddell, whose expressive paintings of horses and sheep channel the rugged beauty of the Western landscape.

Jun Kaneko
Tom Hammick
Rounding out Gail Severn Gallery’s September offerings is a compelling pairing of Jun Kaneko’s monumental ceramic sculptures alongside Tom Hammick’s evocative woodblock prints. Kaneko, celebrated for his large-scale “dango” forms, transforms clay into vibrant, three-dimensional canvases adorned with his distinctive abstract patterns, offering a powerful dialogue between form and surface. Complementing these ceramic marvels are Tom Hammick’s woodblock prints, renowned for their dreamlike narratives and masterful use of color. Hammick’s prints, which explore themes of environmental reverence, artistic journeys, and the human condition, will offer a fascinating counterpoint to Kaneko’s sculptural presence, creating a rich and textured viewing experience.

Kristina Foley
August 26 through October
Opening Night
Artist’s Reception
August 29, 5–7:30pm
Fiber artist Kristina Foley was introduced to felting wool while completing a BFA in Fiber Structure and Interlocking at Syracuse University. She went on to pursue her practice and education in Italy upon graduation. Using the ancient technique of felt making, Foley creates art and textiles that infuse nature, warmth, and a wild opulence into everyday life.
Since the domestication of sheep over 10,000 years ago, felt making has evolved as an art form that combines both utility and beauty. Foley honors this millennia-old relationship between human and animal by celebrating the natural qualities of wool, infusing each piece with the essence of the animal without compromising ethics. Her practice is shaped
by a deeply personal sense of place and unwavering commitment to sustainability.
The transparency of her artistic process emphasizes the authenticity of the materials she uses. Foley shares a commitment to animal-friendly design and chooses local, Responsible Wool Standard-certified wools for their renewable, biodegradable, and enduring qualities.
Her technique allows the raw beauty of the fiber to emerge and transform through felt making, resulting in works of art that invite a respectful, reciprocal connection with the beauty, utility, and spirit of the animal.
August 26 through October
Opening Night Reception with Jeff Juhlin is August 29, from 5 to 7:30pm.
Jeff Juhlin has been working in sculpture, painting, and printmaking for over 50 years. He is mainly recognized for his mixed media landscape abstractions that evoke a sense of stillness, space, and the passage of time, inspired by the Western desert landscape where he lives and creates.
“My work seeks to reflect a sense of stillness, space, and the visual history of time evident in the Western landscape. In this environment, time often reveals itself in the form of rock strata created by erosion, wind, and water, both building up over eons of time and wearing away by the elements in a continuous process. Both process and materiality are always important components in my work. Typically, I reveal layers of translucent strata composed of pigmented wax, oil, paper, cold wax, and other media that are built up and worn away in the storied layers of the creative process.”

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more.
In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 16 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this season include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, Manchester Farms quail, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, vegan sesame noodle bowl, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, smoked beef brisket, fresh steamer clams, seared ahi salad, awesome burgers and sandwiches, to name just a few.
Much of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.
An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and summer evenings on the outdoor terrace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”
Walking down the stairs into this traditional pub is a rite of passage for any visitor to Ketchum, along with downing one of the establishment’s famous Moscow Mules, served in a copper cup and sure to quench anyone’s thirst on a hot summer day. Dine on the outdoor patio or step inside the bar and restaurant, full of locals and visitors alike looking to connect over one of the wooden tables with dishes like Fish & Chips, Bangers & Mash, or an OldFashioned Bar Burger. For the latenight crowd, The Cellar Pub offers a full bar, complete with draft beers and daily drink and shot specials. Music and sports memorabilia line the walls and bar. Head to the back room and you’ll find booths for chatting with friends as well as a full-size free shuffleboard table and a few arcade games. This pub will leave you feeling full—of good food and good times.

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from former owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, Michel presents
classic French cuisine that is also inspired by his background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital). Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.
After over 30 years of serving the best sushi in Ketchum, Sushi on Second shows no signs of slowing down. In addition to crafting amazing sushi rolls like the SOS or the Who’s your daddy, the chefs at Sushi on Second also whip up other Asian-influenced delights, like Yuzu Miso Glazed King Salmon with sauteed Baby Bok Choy, Hamachi Crudo (thinly sliced hamachi sashimi served with a citrusy spicy aji amarillo sauce) and their SOS Style Beef and Rice Stir Fry. Sushi on Second also serves wine, beer, and sake. The praise for this restaurant comes from far and wide. Bon Appetit magazine writes, “Sushi on Second, the best sushi I’ve had in years,” and, framed in the entryway is a menu on which Julia Child wrote, “Bon appetit to Sushi on Second.” Come visit and learn for yourself why a restaurant in Ketchum, Idaho, is making its mark on the sushi world.
