Ketchum-based Kim Frank, a celebrated awardwinning writer , and multi-media storyteller has released her narrative nonfiction book, Elephants in the Hourglass: A Journey of Reckoning and Hope Along the Himalaya. It is a moving memoir and adventure-filled tale on Frank’s quest for the truth about endangered Asian elephants and their evolving relationship with humans.
Published by Pegasus Books, New York, and distributed by Simon & Schuster, Elephants in the Hourglass delves deep into an intricate web of unlikely heroes, power struggles, and living legends, where Frank discovers her passion for becoming an explorer as she works to uncover this intense story on the other side of the world.
“The foundation of this book is that if you want to fix something, you have to act. That can mean anything from a small personal step to a giant leap into the unknown. Telling stories that have the power to make a difference is my deepest motivation.
It makes facing my fears worth the risk. I hope you find something in these stories that speak to you,” says Frank.
Starting out as an ordinary stay-at-home mom and fiction writer, Frank changed her life as she was drawn deeper and deeper into the plight of a remarkable animal. She could not rest until she had learned more about the unique plight of the elephants in northern India and set out to the Himalayas with the goal of a National Geographic story, but ultimately found the experience would change her life.
An award-winning writer and photographer whose work has been published in The Explorers Journal , Sidetracked , Oceanographic, Earth Island Journal , American Literary Review, SVPN Magazine, where she served as editor, Frank’s projects include the books Born to Ice with National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen and Amaze with SeaLegacy founder Cristina Mittermeier and writing/ directing the forthcoming documentary Where the Forest
Roars. In addition, she is a Fellow of The Explorers Club and the Royal Geographical Society.
Frank has been featured on several podcasts and has done several talks around the world, including Kathy Sullivan Explores— Children, Writing and Elephants with Kim Frank, NPR’s The Blue Dot, and KPFA radio’s Women’s Magazine. She has given her talk, Asian Elephants from Conflict to Coexistence, in New York City, Norway, Seattle, California, and London, with many more to come.
Elephants in the Hourglass is far from a black-and-white story where good and bad are immediately obvious. In a world of displaced habitats, exploding population growth, migration, and climate change, an elephant’s memory for its habitat and survival exists within the daily function of human life—a relationship that is bewildering and paralyzing at the same time.
Foreward Reviews writes: “Nuanced, wise, and enthralling, Elephants in the Hourglass is Kim Frank’s extraordinary memoir
Author Kim Frank will give a brief reading with Q&A and book signing 4-6pm | FREE Chapter One Bookstore 340 2nd Street | Ketchum ketchumbookstore.com
about her adventures investigating the plight of Asian elephants in northeastern India—inquiries that run alongside accounts of personal healing, letting go of control, humorous self-doubts, and Frank’s struggle to balance her calling as a writer abroad with her love for her daughters in Idaho. Sharp observations fill this powerful book that explains that Asian elephants, including those in the eastern Himalayas, are moving toward extinction at an exponential rate. Elephants in the Hourglass is a captivating environmental memoir that addresses global issues related to technology, development, culture change, and gender roles in addition to examining the decline of an endangered species.”
Elephants in the Hourglass has also inspired Frank to make the documentary, Where the Forest Roars, which is currently in production to be premiered in fall 2025. Elephants in the Hourglass is available at Hank & Sylvie’s and Chapter One Bookstore in Ketchum and Iconoclast Books in Hailey and on Amazon.

Celebrating ten years, Ice Dance International (IDI) presents SOAR!, a theatrical journey of artistry and athleticism that showcases the magic of figure skating through mesmerizing ensemble performances. SOAR! builds on the current resurgence and fervor for ice skating, one of the fastest-growing pastimes, with rink reservations up 698% in 2024. In addition, social media has helped fuel the fervor with elegant performances in spectacular locations, showcasing a beauty that invites all to participate.
On March 18, SOAR! comes to Sun Valley, led by 2022 Olympic Champion Gabriella Papadakis and two-time U.S. Champion and ISU Grand Prix Champion Alissa Czisny and Rohene Ward, Puerto Rican National Champion and choreographer for World Champion Kaori Sakamoto and U.S. Champion Jason Brown. Junior World Champions Oona and Gage Brown and U.S. Open Champions Kseniya Ponomaryova and Collin Brubaker are among the ensemble
along with internet sensations Ryan Dunk and Karina Manta, leading voices of the LGBTQ figure skating community. Performances were created by world-renowned choreographers Benoît Richaud, Cindy Stuart, Garrett Smith, and Rohene Ward in association with Artistic Director Douglas Webster.
Webster, who is also Executive Director, founded IDI in 2014 with acclaimed ballet dancer, choreographer, and ballet icon Edward Villella, Olympian Linda Villella, and the late Debbie Gordon and skating’s iconic Dick Button, who passed away on January 30, 2025. Its active board includes skating legends Dorothy Hamill and JoJo Starbuck, Olympic Bronze Medalist Scott Allen, and leader of the national synchronized skating movement Josh Babb. Their goals were to combine the grace of ballet dancing with the athleticism of figure skating in a performing art form, provide former skaters an opportunity to
continue performing and entertaining audiences, and inspiring the next generation of skaters.
Returning to Sun Valley since 2018, when IDI filmed a Trey McIntyre piece for PBS, the company was headed back for a tour, In Flight, in 2020, when the pandemic shut them down. Webster is excited to return to Sun Valley for this performance, especially since his brother, Eric Webster, is the director of US Ski and Snowboarding’s Grand Prix events and is directing the World Cup.
“We are looking forward to being in Sun Valley together at the same time with our different events,” says Webster. “I have been coming to Sun Valley since 1994 and have choreographed Sun Valley on Ice three times. We filmed our PBS specials there in 2017, and IDI had four major residencies in Sun Valley from 2015 through 2018. Our Sun Valley committee includes Joy Prudek, Stephanee Grosscup, Judy Blumberg, and Lynn Holly Johnson from Ice Castles. Judy and Lynn were also my skating partners.”
Beyond performances, SOAR!’s all-star cast gives back by engaging with local skating clubs in each market to offer educational clinics and meet-and-greets. IDI’s outreach activities include free public school programs, recreational therapeutic on-ice programs, panel discussions, performances at venues such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Aspen Gay Ski Week, WGBH’s Open Studio, Rockefeller Center and Fenway Park, and the creation of two one-hour public television specials that aired in prime time on PBS stations nationwide presented by American Public Television. In addition, the company has been featured in The New York Times and Boston Globe’s critic’s picks, Dance Magazine, Dance Informa, Dance International, and The Dance Enthusiast
“SOAR! is an uplifting and entrancing show,” says Webster. “Prepare to be immersed in the experience as our cast of ten takes you on an expressive journey through the flight and flow of theatrical ensemble skating. The show continues to build a bridge from sport to art and pushes the boundaries of dance on ice.”
Established in 2014 as a nonprofit organization, Ice Dance International has reached thousands across the globe with its live and virtual performances, community-building events, and educational programs. IDI exists to showcase and promote dance on ice as a dynamic performing art form. The organization creates entertaining figure skating performances of the highest caliber and shares them across New England and the U.S. Many of IDI’s performances reach a worldwide audience through live-streamed experiences. IDI’s founders, board of directors, cast members, and choreographers include World, Olympic, and National champions and award-winning artistic creators.

Sun Valley Offers World-Class Festivities Alongside Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup
The World Cup finals wouldn’t be possible without community support and the hundreds of volunteers through U.S. Ski & Snowboard, who keep the events running smoothly. From the highly experienced on-course Sawtooth Crew, helping build and maintain the course, to the off-course Proctor Crew that works the finish line and beyond, upwards of 500 local and visiting volunteers will be supporting the Stifel Sun Valley Finals.
by Martha Williams
While planning for the Warm Springs race courses has been underway, Sun Valley Company has also been preparing a slate of events for the community to enjoy off the snow and around town. From VIP treatment to open-to-all affairs, these offerings are a great way to experience the World Cup atmosphere and all Sun Valley has to offer.
Events officially kick off on Friday evening with the downhill bib draw, held outdoors at the Sun Valley Lodge ice rink.
As the athletes’ racing order for the next day is drawn, all are invited to the terrace and bleachers to enjoy a festive evening of live music, free cookies and hot chocolate, and fireworks.
It’s a World Cup tradition for each host venue to specially curate a bib draw bash.
“In Beaver Creek, they’re famous for their chocolate chip cookies, so each athlete was presented with a large frosted cookie,” says Lauren Bourgeau, Sun Valley’s Events & Community Partnership Manager. “In Aspen, the local ski club kids wore the bibs and presented athletes with photographs from past years.”
Grandstand seating at the base of Greyhawk is sold out and VIP passes are limited, but viewers can watch the action on the jumbo screen, by walking uphill along the course via designated spectator paths, or by skiing to designated spectator areas along the course (lift ticket required).
Scan for the most up-to-date maps and information, visit sunvalley.com/events/ audi-fis-ski-world-cup/
While Sun Valley’s plans for the bash haven’t yet been announced, options abound. From Sun Valley’s history as the oldest destination ski resort in the country and host of the historic Harriman Cup, to today’s luxury and culinary experiences, the resort has a bounty of ideas to play with.
“There are a lot of things special to this area and to Idaho, so we’re excited to play into that,” Bourgeau says. “It should be a really fun show.”
Before the downhill races begin Saturday morning, a Vendor Village will open along Picabo Street outside Warm Springs Lodge. Running each day throughout the World Cup, the village will feature U.S. Ski Team partners like POC, Atomic, Head Skis, as well as food and beverage tents. Vendors will have free giveaways all week, like Hydro Flask, offering on-site water bottle engraving.
As the races get going and continue through Thursday, spectators can enjoy the finish line action at the base of Greyhawk from the Grandstand or on foot, or catch the entire race on the jumbo screen.
VIP pass holders will enjoy the best racing views from a private outdoor patio and event structure near the finish line. After being shuttled to Warm Springs each day, these guests will also enjoy gourmet breakfasts and lunches, specialty beverages, and swag bags, all from the comfort of the luxury tent where the races are also being live-streamed.
Whether you’re a VIP or not, everyone can enjoy live après music at the Warm Springs base. A mix of local and regional talent will grace the outdoor stage and end each day’s races in style.
On Monday, as the race course is being transitioned from speed to tech and the skiers take a well-deserved break, the community is invited to the newly renamed Champions Meadow (formerly Festival Meadows, along Sun Valley Road just east of Ketchum).
At 11am the newest statue in the Row of Champions will be unveiled, honoring local skier Picabo Street. Born in the Wood River Valley, Street trained on Baldy’s slopes before going on to win two World Cup downhill season titles and two Olympic medals.
The bronze statue, designed by Boise-based artist Benjamin Victor, will be placed alongside those of local Olympians Gretchen Fraser, Kaitlyn Farrington, Christin Cooper, Muffy Davis, and Susie Corrock (whose statue is the next one planned). Street and all the living honorees are expected to attend.
“Picabo will be announcing the racers in British Columbia leading up to the World Cup,” says Our Olympic Ladies organizer Brian Barsotti. “So it’s a great time to unveil her when all these racers are here. This will be the largest women’s athlete monument in the world.”
Following the unveiling, Sun Valley has organized the Wild West Skijoring Invitational, an event featuring 40 teams of skiers and horseback riders from around the region who will dazzle the crowd with a high-energy show.
“The Western culture has been really intriguing to the FIS and the Europeans who’ll be visiting,” says Bourgeau. “And skijoring is the perfect combination of ski racing and Western. We’re bringing the energy into town and hoping it’s a fun day for all,” she says of the festive atmosphere that will also feature live music, food trucks, and fire pits throughout the day.
On Tuesday, the action returns to Warm Springs as the women take on the giant slalom course. The men take their turns on Wednesday, and that evening features a second bib draw back out at the Lodge ice rink and another evening of meeting the athletes off the snow.
After the final slalom on Thursday, the week’s top racers will be honored with the famous World Cup crystal globes that have commemorated race winners since 1967.
“It’s a very high honor in ski racing,” says Bourgeau. “We’re excited to host the presentation here, at the base of Greyhawk in
the finish area.” A blowout concert at the Warm Springs base will close out the week’s events.
“The ski races are the highlight, but this is also a community event,” Bourgeau says of the entire week. “It’s a celebration of ski racing, but also something that everyone can be a part of, whether or not you watch the races.”
After more than a year of planning for the races and all the festivities off the snow, she’s excited to see it all come to life.
“To see the hard work of so many people and to see Ketchum and Sun Valley highlighted is really special,” she says. “We’ll get to see the top skiers in the world racing on Baldy while the community comes alive. It will be really fun to share that experience.”
As 5850 Fest prepares to take over downtown Ketchum from March 20–27, 2025, the festival unveils its final headliner—the exciting country duo Big & Rich. Whether it’s high-energy DJ sets, chart-topping country anthems, retro rock, or all performances and events will set the stage for an unforgettable week in the mountains, from music and food to entertainment and talks—and the best of ski racing on the big screen.
Save a horse, ride a cowboy. Just one line from Big & Rich’s legendary catalog of hits is enough to fire up any crowd. In 1936, Sun Valley founder Averell Harriman had a clear vision for his new winter resort: fast and fancy rail access, a luxury hotel with unforgettable amenities and activities, and a guest list of top entertainers and society’s elite. There would be treasure to find in the challenges and rewards of skiing, and the key to that treasure was also attracting the best skiers in the world. Here, we celebrate the stars of ski racing who, with their expertise and achievements, have validated the Sun Valley experience.
In the early years, races were held in the mountains north of Ketchum, on a rough trail through the woods on Warm Springs, and the lift-served runs on Dollar Mountain.
Dick Durrance, (above) with Kathleen Harriman, was a top star and won three out of the first four annual international competitions that eventually became know as the Harriman Cup.
As the resort’s reputation escalated, Averell Harriman brought in the racers, the experts, and the influencers of the times.
Otto Lang (right) directed the ski school and was a noted ski filmmaker. Emile Allais was a dominant racer and brought a French perspective to teaching skiing and resort operations.
Friedl Pfeiffer also directed the ski school and hired the first three women instructors, Clarita Heath, Sis McKean, and Elli Stiller.
Austrian Toni Matt was an accomplished racer who scored high in Harriman Cups. He fought for the 10th Mountain Division ski troops in World War II and, with that service, earned American citizenship.
Because of the war, the 1940 and 1944 Olympics were cancelled, making it a long wait for top racers. At the 1948 Olympics in St. Moritz, Gretchen Fraser (below) finally had her chance and won gold in the slalom and silver in the combined.
In the 1950s, Otto Lang introduced a new course for the Harriman Cup downhill. From the top, it was a schuss down Ridge, fast turns on Rock Garden, a traverse to Roundhouse Slope, a launch off the top of Exhibition, only four turns, then a straight run out to River Run. Legends who took their place among the winners included Stein Eriksen, Christian Pravda, Anderl Molterer, and Toni Sailer. Pravda (on left) racing in the Harriman Cup slalom on Rudd Mountain, won in ’53, ’56, and ’59. The Exhibition downhill challenged racers and thrilled spectators for years.
Among the top women skiers of the 1950s were (left to right)
Janette Burr Johnson, Katy Rudolph, Andrea Mead Lawerence, and Salley Neidlinger. Sun Valley local, Betty Weir Bell, below, had only a few years of racing experience but made the 1952 Olympic team.
Stein Eriksen (above and right) and other top racers taught at the Sun Valley Ski School in exchange for lodging and training. The handsome style-master had what local racer Ron Funk called “oldworld graciousness, a true gentleman.”
Daredevil Dick Buek (left), a Sun Valley Ski Patrol member, raced, flew a small airplane, and loved motorcycles. He would try just about anything, especially if there was a wager on the outcome. Buek bet a few patrollers they could not stand still on the roof of the patrol shack when he buzzed Baldy with his plane. They bailed, and he won the bet.
In the early 1960s, American racers crowded the Harriman Cup podiums.
Chuck Ferries (left) ran away from home in Michigan to Sun Valley to be a ski racer. He eventually made the U.S. team coached by Bob Beattie, won the Hahnenkamm slalom, and raced in the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck. His sister, Barbara (right), only 16 years old, swept the downhill, slalom, and combined Harriman Cup in 1961. Then she took bronze in the combined at the 1962 World Championships in Chamonix, France. Chuck, a longtime Sun Valley resident, and Barbara, plan to attend the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals this spring.
In 1966 and 1968, Sun Valley hosted International Team Races. Frenchman Jean Claude Killy (above middle) and Canadian Nancy Greene (below) topped the podiums and were also considered an item off the hill. The final staging of the Great Exhibition downhill was in 1968.
Karl Schranz (above right) was another star presence at the Sun Valley International Team Races but did not ski his best. People with an ear for German heard fellow Austrian, Gerhart Nenning, who had beaten Killy in the downhill, berating Schranz for poor skiing. Schranz had been lodging at the home of Hollywood star Ann Sothern and perhaps partying too much (or not partying enough).
In December of 1970, the Sun Valley Ski Club staged the “Holiday Classic,” a three-event CAN-AM race that attracted Americans, Canadians, and a few Norwegians. Top tens included future stars and notable locals: Terry and Tyler Palmer, Paul Crews, Andy Mill, Cecelia Teague, Susie Patterson, Otto Tschudi, Ken Corrock, David Currier, Wally Rothgeb, and Katy Morning.
Susie (above) and Pete (top) Patterson literally grew up on Baldy, with their home being the “North Face Hut” where the Warm Springs Lodge now stands. Both made the 1976 Innsbruck Olympic team, and at the 1980 Games at Lake Placid, Pete placed fifth in the downhill despite setbacks from injuries. This tied the all-time best finish for an American in the event at that time.
The Corrock family had only lived in Ketchum for a few years when Susan won the bronze medal in downhill skiing at the 1972 Games in Sapporo.
Through the late 1970s, Bob Beattie’s World Pro Skiing was a spectacular event. International stars Jean Claude Killy, Henri Duvillard, Spider Sabich, and others joined equipment teams for fierce dual racing competition. In the mix were Sun Valley athletes Ken Corrock, Paul Carson, Dan Mooney, Terry (above left) and Tyler (above right) Palmer, Mike Lafferty, Bill Shaw, David Currier, and Doug Woodcock. Tournament directors included Wally Rothgeb and Nappy Nieman. The apres-ski partying was out of this world. According to Nieman, “We crushed it.”
In 1975 and 1977, Sun Valley hosted World Cup races on the Warm Springs side of Baldy. Big names included Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark (left), Italians Gustavo Thoeni and Piero Gros, Austrian Annemarie Proell-Moser, Hanni Wenzel of Lichtenstein, Perrine Pelen and Danielle Debernard of France, and Americans Phil and Steve Mahre.
In 1977, up-and-coming American Christin Cooper won the national slalom title and placed respectably in this race. Still, the day belonged to her compatriot, Abbi Fisher, who tallied second place in the combined.
Homegrown racers Christin Cooper and Maria Maricich worked their way to the international stage. Among Christin’s many awards are two silver and one bronze medal at the 1982 World Championships at Schladming, Austria, and a silver medal in giant slalom at the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo. Maria scored a second in a World Cup downhill at Megeve, France, in 1983 and was 19th in the downhill at Sarajevo. Christin Cooper (below) was a longtime ski racing television commentator on NBC with Tim Ryan.
Hard-charging Picabo Street (below), from the enclave of Triumph south of Sun Valley, took the silver medal in downhill at the Lillehammer Olympics in 1994. In 1998, at Nagano, she won the gold medal in super G. Along the way, she also collected two World Cup season downhill titles and three World Championships medals. She is now a co-commentator with Steve Porino for televised ski races.
Zach and Reggie Crist (above) came up through local ski racing programs, and Reggie made the 1992 Albertville Olympic team. The brothers then took on the challenge of ski cross and medaled numerous times at the X-Games.
Muffy Davis (right) was severely injured in a downhill training run on Baldy. She re-focused, persevered, and became a Paralympic racer. She won medals in the 1998 and 2002 Winter Paralympic Games, travelled the world to support disability issues, served in the Idaho State legislature, and is a Blaine County Commissioner.
In 2008, financial wizard and local philanthropist Kipp Nelson created 48 STRAIGHT. The “new school” ski and snowboard cross along with ski and snowboard pipe events made for fast action during the day, and then big-tent concerts and club shows rocked far into the night. Nelson is now Chairman of the Board of U.S. Ski and Snowboarding.
Langley McNeal (left) used her Baldyburnished alpine skills to compete in international ski cross events.
In 2016, Sun Valley earned the opportunity to host the U.S. National Alpine Skiing Championships. This became a recurring event that tested the resort and community’s capability for staging top-tier competitions, including travel, lodging, snow preparation, ceremonies, and logistics.
When top skiers come to town, people of all ages are enthralled by their command of technique and achievements. Here, young racers (left to right)
Natalie Gowe, Tatum Ware, and Ruby Crist get autographs from their idol, Mikaela Shiffrin. Gowe and Crist are now skiing at the national level and getting their first European experience. Ware excelled in freestyle skiing and soccer and is pursuing her education at Santa Clara University.
Averell Harriman had it right. World-class events motivate visitors and serve the community. Today, that means not just ski racing but a wide range of sports and cultural events throughout the year. Baldy is a veritable monument to visionary entrepreneurs and adventurous participants. We are challenged to carry on the traditions.
A dedication to Sun Valley
by Victoria Rossin
At first glance, the names Bill Janss, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Otto Lang, Muffy Davis, and Ernest Hemingway might seem completely unrelated. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll notice something unique linking these icons: a special blue sign with a green circle, blue square, or black diamond next to their names. These signs mark the 136 named trails on Baldy and Dollar Mountains, but here’s the kicker—only 16 of these runs carry the names of real people.
So, what does it take to have a trail named after you on Baldy or Dollar Mountains? You might think it’s about being an expert skier, a Hollywood superstar, or a local legend. But the real connection between these trail names isn’t fame or skill—it’s a shared love and dedication to this beautiful mountain community.
Let’s begin by looking at three key players from the early days of “America’s First Destination Ski Resort.” The Sun Valley Ski School, founded in 1936, bringing the Austrian technique of teaching skiing to the U.S. The resort brought in top instructors from Austria, including Otto Lang (Otto’s Run), Sepp Froehlich (Sepp’s Run), and Sigi Engl (Sigi’s Bowl).
Together, these three instructors helped define skiing in America, shaping the sport’s techniques, styles, and culture. At various points in their careers, the three men served as head of the Sun Valley Ski School. Otto Lang also ventured into film, contributing to Sun Valley Serenade and several other projects, including Jet Carrier, which earned him two Academy Awards.
During World War II, Sun Valley Resort was closed to skiing and repurposed as a convalescent hospital for the U.S. Navy. After the war, John Crandall “Pete” Lane (Pete’s Lane)—whose family had deep roots in the area—returned and began to make his mark on the town.
These trails serve as a lasting legacy to the individuals who helped make Sun Valley the iconic destination it is today.
Lane took over the operation of his father’s ski shop and worked closely with designers and manufacturers to advance the evolving technology of skis and boots. He is also credited with founding the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF), a program that fosters youth involvement in snow sports through training and development.
As the resort and sport of skiing evolved and grew, the ski industry began to blossom in the town of Ketchum. In 1964, Bill Janss (Janss Pass) and the Janss Corporation bought the resort from Averell Harriman’s Union Pacific Railroad. Bill, a passionate skier himself, was a successful businessman and a member of the U.S. Olympic ski team in 1940. However, the outbreak of World War II prevented him from competing.
Over the years, Sun Valley has gained a reputation for churning out outstanding skiers, many of whom took their careers to the ultimate spotlight of the World Olympic Games. In total, 11 Olympic metals belong to the five women with trails named after them on Bald Mountain. Those raised in the area who honed their skills on the slopes of Baldy include Muffy Davis (Muffy’s Medals—previously named Southern
Comfort), Christin Cooper (Christin’s Silver—previously Silver Fox), Picabo Street (Picabo’s Street—previously named Plaza), and Kaitlyn Farrington (Kaitlyn’s Bowl—previously Far Out Bowl). And although Gretchen Fraser (Gretchen’s Gold) was not raised in the area, she moved to the Valley with her husband and spent many years enjoying skiing.
In Sun Valley, one name stands out: the legendary writer Ernest Hemingway (Upper and Lower Hemingway). Hemingway first came to the area in 1939, invited by the Union Pacific Railroad for a publicity campaign. Enchanted by the Valley’s natural beauty, he returned often over the following two decades, seeking solace in the surrounding wilderness. Known around town, Hemingway frequented many of Ketchum’s iconic spots, including The Pioneer Saloon, Michel’s Christiania, and the Casino (back when gambling was still legal there). Sun Valley was so meaningful to him that he spent his final days here, and today, he rests in the Ketchum Cemetery.
Since its inception, Sun Valley has long been a haven for celebrities, attracting Hollywood stars. Among those who became deeply involved in the area were two iconic actors, Arnold
Schwarzenegger (Arnold’s Run—previously Flying Maid) and Janet Leigh (Leigh’s Lane), who have left a lasting mark on the resort. Schwarzenegger, who still owns a home in the area, has spent countless winter days skiing on Baldy’s slopes. Another frequent Sun Valley visitor, Janet Leigh, also made her mark on the slopes. In 1974, she even competed in the Pro-Am Lange Cup at Sun Valley, running gates in a display of skill and passion for the sport.
The final three trail names in Sun Valley are a tribute to local legends, each with a deep connection to the resort’s history. Gary “Brick” Grant (Brick’s Island) and Byron Cady (Byron’s Park) were both employees of the resort. Kenny Corrock (Kenny’s—a cat track that links Flying Squirrel to Warm Springs) was a trail worker who graded the path that bears his name. Some say the incline of the slope didn’t quite meet the expected specifications, but in the end, he will be remembered for his work. These trails serve as a lasting legacy to the individuals who helped make Sun Valley the iconic destination it is today.
As you explore the slopes or navigate the trail maps, take a moment to recognize the names that have shaped the ski area’s history. And, if you aspire to leave your mark on Sun Valley and see your name celebrated in blue, remember that forging a deep connection with the community and its vibrant life is essential to achieving this honor.
SVPN Magazine would like to thank The Community Library and its Regional History Librarian Liam Guthrie and Director of Regional History Mary Tyson for assistance in preparing images for this issue.

DOUBLE DOWN WITH STYLED TWICE
Ketchum consignment boutique is for fashion lovers
by Sabina Dana Plasse
When two close friends, Blair Brakovich and Kerry Guggenheim, decided to open a business, they combined their love for retail and fashion to create Styled Twice. Located around the corner from Merlin’s Magic Lantern, Styled Twice is accessible with plenty of easy-access parking when discovering the incredible amount of clothing and accessories you will find throughout the store.
“After working in retail most of my life, the next step was to open a business,” says Brakovich. “My partner Kerry owned consignment stores in Northern California and worked in consignment locally for several years. She brings first-hand experience to our business and knows the Sun Valley market.”
Brakovich and Guggenheim’s commitment to consignment, “pre-loved” fashion, especially with a concentration on high-end and sought-after fashion brands, is also founded in their belief in sustainability, keeping clothing out of landfills and wearable. “It’s a treasure hunt in Styled Twice, and when you find unique pieces, it’s a win.”
Styled Twice features clean, well-kept clothes organized in different areas throughout the store, including accessories and shoes. Knowing the shopping clientele, Brakovich and Guggenheim have designed the store with ease of access for dressing rooms, perusing items, and creating a well-lit, welcoming, and comfortable atmosphere with a sitting area and complimentary refreshments.
“When living in a mountain town, there are many different styles and lifestyles,” says Brakovich, who is very knowledgeable about Sun Valley retail from working for many years at Ozzie’s Shoes. “There is yoga wear and shearling coats, as well as a need for stylish luggage, great ski jackets, and cashmere sweaters, which we will have year-round because we all wear and need these items

throughout the year along with seasonal items whether it’s a summer evening around a firepit or attending a fundraising gala.” She adds, “We also carry resort wear, which our clientele appreciates.”
There are great selections for men and children, along with many noteworthy fashion brands, from Gucci and Chanel to Moncler and Bogner, and so much more. Everything is clean, odorless, and in excellent condition, and Styled Twice has made the consignment process very user-friendly. If you are consigning, you can bring your clothes, meet with the team, track items with a Styled Twice app, and be paid out monthly. Styled Twice curates high-quality, fashionable pieces for all seasons and social needs and will assist with consigning efforts and pricing.
“We have great hours, including being open on Mondays, which our shoppers and consigners appreciate,” says Guggenheim. “People need things constantly, which is where we can help, and we have developed personal relationships with customers, who share their stories and history. It is all part of the process making Styled Twice a unique and gratifying experience.”

We express love for life, family, and friends in many ways. For Kim Selby, it’s through food. She celebrates life through her passion for cooking. And she nourishes friends and family, body and soul, through delectable dishes and treats. Selby’s debut cookbook, Everything with Love, showcases recipes that she learned from her mother, Betty, while growing up in Chicago, as well as meals she created over the years since. Selby’s mother will tell you that she has been creating, cooking, and testing recipes in the kitchen since she could hold a spoon.
Some of Selby’s original recipes were inspired by family, catering to the requests and tastes of her three children, Kelsey, Chloé, and Ricky, while Selby was raising them in Los Angeles, California. Others have the stamp of her close-knit group of girlfriends during time spent together in Sun Valley, Idaho, and Los Angeles.
“My mom’s cookbook is a culmination of years spent in the kitchen, creating the most delicious meals and treats for our family and friends,” says Kelsey Selby. “Every recipe reflects her passion, creativity, and the love she pours into her cooking. Her food is more than a meal—it’s an experience, filled with warmth, flavor, and memories.”
Chloé Selby adds, “Everything with Love is a breathtaking testament to my mother’s love, passion, and culinary artistry. I thank my mother for crafting such a masterpiece that allows us to create extraordinary recipes, reminisce on cherished memories, and savor the joy of sharing delicious meals. I am beyond thrilled for the world to experience the warmth, love, and soul poured into every page.”
In Everything with Love, Selby presents her most delicious and requested dishes, which include breakfast, breads, salads, soups, stews, sandwiches, sides, entrees, sauces, dips, desserts, and drinks. It’s a feast of wonderful tastes and combinations
that anyone can enjoy. In addition to rich and vibrant photographs of the dishes, Selby shares short vignettes about the circumstances and events surrounding their creation. Selby calls these “sense memories,” creating “our life stories” through food.
“If I were to describe Kim’s cooking, I would have to say it’s beyond delicious,” says Everything with Love photographer Mikel Healey. Alana Itaya, the writer and creative director of the cookbook, adds, “It’s an experience that uplifts, energizes, comforts, heals, celebrates, nurtures, and inspires. Kim was born with superhuman taste buds and has organically figured out how to share the savoring of meals and life. This cookbook is a treasure!”
Selby has sprinkled Everything with Love with inspiring quotes, messages, beautiful food photography, and glimpses of cooking, prepping, family, friends, and more, bringing to life the intrinsic value of food and shared culinary experiences. Each recipe has a heartfelt introduction and list of ingredients with clean and easy instructions. The end product is a creative and beautiful addition to your home—a gift of love from Selby.
“Everything with Love was seven years in the making,” says Selby. “I love deeply, and when I am cooking, it brings my whole world together. It’s joyful. The inspiration for this cookbook derives from many sources, including a longstanding tradition of family dinners with my children present, a sacred time for us. When making pizza with friends and others, it’s the same. All
ingredients are available for everyone to join in the creative fun and celebrate together, whether in the kitchen cooking or outside in the summer eating and enjoying the best of Sun Valley.” She adds, “It’s beautiful, and it’s love. It brings everyone together.”
With a table of contents for each section and index, Everything with Love is a joy to use. There is something for everyone to experience, from traditional dishes to original creations that do not disappoint, especially if you pay attention to Selby’s suggestions on process, ingredients, and products. She is knowledgeable and extends her love of life, family, friends, and food to those who love cooking or enjoy a beautiful cookbook.
Everything with Love is available at Atkinsons’ market, Bellissimo, and Hank & Sylvie’s in Ketchum. It’s also available on Amazon and at everythingwithlove.com.

“The hot springs truly are special and unique aspects of our property. The Osprey has always been exciting to people— they just love it.”
—Mandy Clark
Visually soaking in the Sawtooths is pure balm for the soul and a sight to behold, but actually soaking in the area’s hot springs is another exhilarating experience, and to some, quite addictive. As winter dispels, there’s nothing more relaxing after invigorating mountain recreation than slipping into nature’s geothermal warm embrace. Because Stanley is situated over the Idaho Batholith—a large granite formation fractured by faults—hot water from deep in the earth’s core rushes up through each fault, spilling out onto the surface, into streams, and creating pools. As a result, Stanley is surrounded by numerous springs, some more difficult to get to than others, depending on the season. But whether you hike several hours to the spring’s location or pull off the side of the road at the sight of rising steam, spring soaking in the Stanley Basin is dreamy and steamy.
While there is a dozen or more springs around Stanley, with even more an hour west on Highway 21. Several in proximity are perfect for indulging in on a day’s excursion from the Sun Valley area, (barring late spring, early summer runoff), but by far the most popular and iconic hot spring experience lies no further than at Mountain Village Resort (MVR), the only developed hot springs in the town of Stanley. Three unique hot spring options along the banks of Valley Creek provide astounding views of the Sawtooth Mountains and are sourced by natural hot water. Osprey Hot Spring has been a jewel of MVR for years, with its barn doors opened to frame the majestic peaks like an enormous work of art. The Sandhill Crane Hot Spring and the Bluebird Hot Spring are two new amazing features of the resort.
MVR owner Mandy Clark says, “The hot springs truly are special and unique aspects of our property. The Osprey has always been exciting to people—they just love it. The two new ones, operating since last August when the fires were raging, are in one log building with two separate rooms, each with the pebble bottom pool, its own changing space, a small grass area, and an overhead door that opens to frame the Sawtooths.” These 8’x 8’ tubs are for private rent for up to ten guests each. The water temperature ranges from 98-104 degrees depending on the time of year and Nature’s attitude. Soaking times are by reservation only. Contact MVR with inquiries and reservations at mountainvillage.com.
Just northeast of the resort’s hot springs sits Valley Creek Hot Springs, also known as Snake Pit Hot Springs, accessed most easily by turning off Highway 75 at the Stanley Museum entrance. After parking in a dirt lot, cross a footbridge to the other side of the creek to find the large, undeveloped soaking pool.
About four miles northeast on Highway 75 is the unassuming Boat Box Springs, also known as Elkhart Hot Springs. Boat Box was named after a metal cauldron that was bolted to the boulders along the Salmon River but was sadly washed away in 2023. There is no sign, so keep an eye out for the steam rising from the riverbed to the right of the narrow parking area on the road’s shoulder. The springs still come out of the road bed and warm up manmade pools that have been made of river rock.
Cove Creek Hot Springs is ten minutes northeast of Stanley, right off the roadside along the Salmon River, located just past Mormon Bend Campground and the road to Basin Creek
Campground. Cove Creek still has a feeling of seclusion, probably because it’s just a small pool located downhill and away from the parking area. There’s also a vault toilet here and a picnic area along the bank of the river.
An additional eight minutes past Cove Creek lies the wellknown and historic Sunbeam Hot Springs. A stone structure serves as a changing room and includes a pit toilet. The springs are piped down to the Salmon River, where bathers can build their own small pools, using river rocks and mixing river water with the hot water to adjust the temperature. Two of the pools are recycled metal tubs that have water feeding into them. Geothermal temperatures range from 100-110 degrees. The rocks here are slippery from ice in the winter and algae in the summer. Wildlife sightings are common at Sunbeam Hot Springs. Watch for bald eagles, elk, deer, and even bear. Along with a swimsuit, don’t forget a towel and river shoes. Cure your cabin fever, one hot spring at a time.

Even the most well-prepared person falls prey to injury. Rather than view this as a setback, we can use it as an opportunity to come back stronger than ever. At CENTERED, we typically see injuries heal at an accelerated rate of 30-90% efficiency, saving years, if not decades, of pain, weakness, and instability in your life. Read on to learn the secrets to our success.
Two things happen during an injury. Typically, a muscle in the surrounding area of injury becomes inhibited and “shut off.” Often, no amount of rehab or therapy will turn it back on. It needs to be restored through a neuromuscular connection, such as the AMIT method. Then, once the connection has been converted from the brain to the muscle, we can regenerate the damaged and injured tissue, whether it’s bone or soft tissue, at an accelerated rate. We typically can heal damaged tissue in two to six weeks. Back to play.
Pulsed magnetic therapy will speed up healing through a quick magnetic pulse. The treatment involves lying on a table on the magnetic mat. It is a powerful therapy different from a lowvoltage unit, which is more like being on top of a magnet. Studies show it regenerates bone and cartilage, clearing inflammation and speeding up healing of all tissues while decreasing pain. It is also excellent for autoimmune conditions or after flights, as it is grounding.
Our Shockwave model is a high-power model that can clear inflammation, remodel tissue, and significantly decrease pain. We have seen soft tissue tears and fractures heal pain-free within four weeks. This remarkable technology will create stem cells in the area of treatment throughout the next 12 weeks.
Infrared therapy speeds up healing, decreases pain, and lessens inflammation. It also leaves one in a positive, uplifted state.
Live O2 therapy is an intermittent O2 therapy, which brings results with injury, trauma, and post-concussion. It leaves one feeling energized, light, cleared of inflammation, and mentally clear. This equipment can increase VO2 max, clear circulatory conditions like Raynaud’s, clear asthma, and regulate body temperature.
BRT therapy is an amazing therapy for healing, post trauma/ shock, or to treat anxiety and depression. It is a PEMF machine with biofeedback, which informs the session in real time. It brings the brain to a coherent state and grounds and strengthens the body. It leaves one feeling grounded, calm, and refreshed.
VASPER technology balances cortisol and increases strengthening hormones. It leaves you feeling full of energy, significantly accelerates sports recovery, and leads to mental clarity and sharpness. It optimizes all body systems.
Injury recovery can be an empowering process. It can lead to a recovery that leaves you stronger than ever, more in tune with your body, and more aware of previous instability or compensations.
Our brain-based approach gives incredible solutions for concussions. Brain injuries impact the field 16 times more than any other injury. We have a specialized approach to concussion recovery that can allow the brain/body connection to be restored. This requires an individualized assessment and plan of action, with a blend of techniques, and restores a high quality of function. Post-concussion often leads to anxiety, depression, pain, confusion, and balance issues. We resolve them all—quickly.
Injury recovery can be an empowering process. It can lead to a recovery that leaves you stronger than ever, more in tune with your body, and more aware of previous instability or compensations. It can also inform an intelligent, solutionoriented approach that leads to an even higher level of health and high-energy, optimistic individuals.

Colombian-American artist Sofía Jaramillo uses her visual storytelling techniques to explore and understand societal constructs with a deconstructive eye. She was born in Sun Valley, and her father is from Colombia. As a celebrated filmmaker and photographer, Jaramillo has expanded her creative vision to offer new narratives inspired by historical Sun Valley images in her OCHI exhibition, A New Winter
Reimagining the strategies of representation by recreating influential historical media, Jaramillo explores the origins of winter sports culture with her photography and visual storytelling techniques—creating work she wishes her younger self could have seen.
Focusing on the intersection between athletes and the environment, Jaramillo has created stunning portraiture that offers several levels of connection, from fashion and style to artistic vision and cultural nuance to diversity and social change on the slopes.
“The show evolved over several years from a scrappy idea to casting supermodels and athletes who are activists too,” says Jaramillo. “These models are involved with nonprofits, whether it’s their
own nonprofit or they’re volunteering for nonprofits working to bring more folks of color into snow sports, surfing, or mountain biking.” She adds, “When people see A New Winter, I initially want them to think they are looking at historic photos, but then to look again or become intrigued because they will notice something different. I want them to notice the power of contrast between the images they’ve seen before and what they’re seeing now.
With a background in editorial photography that often necessitated solitude while on assignment, Jaramillo has an artistic practice that delights in communal creative spaces, bringing together the knowledge sets, skills, imaginations, and motivations of a diverse array of artistic partners. Working closely with a growing team of like-minded collaborators who operate at the highest levels within the fields of production, styling, casting, lighting, and modeling, Jaramillo creates new media visions that radiate the collective joys of being human, being in community, and being in nature.
A New Winter is a series of photographs that provides an enlightening and beautiful perspective while offering a broad and profound platform of discussion on many levels, as art and artists like Jaramillo have the innate ability to create.

The exhibition includes artwork by three nationally known, Los Angeles-based artists, Catherine Opie, Rob Reynolds, and Mungo Thomson, and two new bodies of work created with support from SVMoA by artists Sofía Jaramillo and Ryan Bonilla.

Ben Steele
Gilman Contemporary is excited to announce A Day in the Sun, featuring new works by Ben Steele, whose diverse style brilliantly bridges art history and contemporary culture. Steele’s compositions pay homage to the luminaries of modern art, drawing inspiration from icons like Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Gustav Klimt. His paintings demonstrate technical precision while intertwining elements of irony, nostalgia, and subtle humor. Steele’s compositions cleverly integrate elements like crayons, Etch A Sketches, and pencils, which can emerge as subjects or become integral parts of the main piece.
Steele’s work captivates with clever visual narratives that resonate with cultural significance, employing a masterful balance between tradition and innovation. Each piece invites dialogue, challenging perceptions and evoking emotions through a lens that is both modern and richly informed by previous art movements. In this exhibition, viewers will experience an engaging exploration of a creative vision that is at once thoughtprovoking and visually striking.
Painter Thai Mainhard navigates emotion through the application of vibrant color, gestural brushstrokes, and frenetic textures. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and now based in Los Angeles, California, Mainhard’s paintings exude a sense of place and experience drawn from both locales. In her newest body of work, Mainhard delves into the abstract qualities of composed still-lifes. With a maximalist approach, Mainhard fills her canvases with energy—swatches of bright hues mingle with checkered tablecloths and patterned vases holding loosely rendered botanicals. These compositions serve as a window into the artist’s internal world, capturing the interplay between chaos and order, figurative representation, and expressive abstraction.

Broschofsky Galleries is proud to present a selection of new works from our featured artists, including renowned British fine-art photographer, conservationist, and author David Yarrow. Yarrow’s photography documents some of the most remote locations in the world through his signature style. Known for his strikingly staged images, he often combines nostalgic themes with iconic subjects, remarkable locations, and occasionally, trained animals.
In his recent photograph, National Treasure, Yarrow captures a powerful moment with Mikaela Shiffrin, the record-breaking American alpine skier who holds the most World Cup wins in history, surpassing both men’s and women’s records. A global role model, Shiffrin was named one of TIME ’s 100 most influential people in 2023.
Yarrow chose Oslo as the backdrop for this iconic image, inspired by the city’s rich heritage in both skiing and polar exploration. In his words, “It would be rather lame to photograph Mikaela on a ski slope.” The result is a captivating portrait of two legendary athletes—Shiffrin and Norwegian skier Aleksander Aamodt Kilde—who train together during the summer months in Norway.
We are also excited to feature a new series by Billy Schenck, whose reductivist, paint-by-numbers style has defined his work since the 1960s. Schenck’s early exposure to Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell Soup collection shaped his own artistic journey, leading him to work alongside Warhol in the 1960s. In his «New West» series, Schenck satirizes the myths and truths of the American West. These works are presented alongside Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians portfolio (1986), one of his final projects before his passing in 1987. Warhol’s exploration of Western myths through pop art remains a significant contribution to contemporary art.
Also on display are works from other renowned gallery artists, including Bill Barrett, Rudi Broschofsky, Russell Chatham, Edward Curtis, Ewoud de Groot, Joan Mitchell, Ken Peloke, Theodore Villa, and more.

OCHI presents A New Winter, an exhibition of photographs by artist Sofía Jaramillo. This is Jaramillo’s first exhibition with the gallery. A New Winter will be on view from March 14 through May 2, 2025. An Artist’s Reception will be held on Wednesday, March 19, from 6:30–8:30pm. Growing up Colombian-American in Sun Valley, Idaho, Sofía Jaramillo spent time in and around the historical Sun Valley Lodge. As the first ski destination in North America, the lodge popularized the concept of ski vacations, combining world-class slopes with a glamorous après ski lifestyle to draw celebrities, world-class athletes, and wealthy visitors from its inception in 1936. Nostalgic, historical
photographs of these stylish visitors line the hallways of the lodge. In 2020, Jaramillo was roaming the halls when she noticed that the photographs primarily featured white individuals, with one notable exception being an image of Louis Armstrong. As the first ski resort in the United States, these images have represented American ski culture for decades. They have told the world what skiing in America looks like, and they have largely excluded people from different racial and cultural backgrounds. Jaramillo has long questioned the lack of diversity in these scenes and, through her work as an editorial and commercial outdoor photographer, knows they do not represent the people seen on the slopes today.

Kathy Moss
Emanate Part II
Creating her own gesso and paint bodies from Renaissance recipes, Kathy Moss depicts botanicals as mysterious archetypes in her work. Keenly aware of the suggestiveness and psychological meaning attached to flowers and plants, her paintings address issues of power, solipsism, and hierarchies. Traditionally working in a monochromatic neutral palette, Moss decisively introduces subtle hints of color in this new body of work. This solo exhibition will feature large-scale oil paintings as well as smaller works on paper.
In this captivating exhibition, Michael Gregory, Theodore Waddell, Laura McPhee, Victoria Adams, and James Cook invite viewers to reimagine the rural landscape through a contemporary, abstract lens. Abstract techniques blur the boundaries between the seen and the felt, turning solid barns and towering mountains into ephemeral impressions. These paintings and photographs look beyond the literal, discovering new layers of depth, emotion, and narrative within the familiar rural environment.
Through the mediums of bird feathers and the drawn and painted renderings of flora and fauna, Specimens invites reflection on how human actions shape, threaten, and sometimes preserve the ecosystems around us. These specimens serve as not just objects; but also as stories—of balance, loss, and the urgent need for conservation. Artists Joseph Rossano, Chris Maynard. Maggie Shafran, Kiki Smith, Anne Siems, and Lynda Lowe remind us that the preservation of our world’s beauty is not just a duty, but a necessity.
The relationship between flowers and humanity is rich and diverse; there is symbolism and emotion tied to flowers in art, culture, and history. From the delicate representation of beauty and fragility to flowers as symbols of love, grief, renewal, and even political resistance. Lynda Lowe, Maggie Shafran, Kenna Moser, Betsy Margolius, Hung Liu, Diane Andrews Hall, Pamela DeTuncq, and Michael Gregory all explore themes of life, love, and longing through their imagery of flowers.
The May exhibition will feature a selection of the gallery’s internationally acclaimed and emerging artists with a focus on the representation and interpretation of our natural landscapes. The exhibition will include large-format photography by Laura McPhee and Laura Wilson; oils on canvas by James Cook and Theodore Waddell and Victoria Adams; abstract paintings by Anne Siems and Rana Rochat; tapestries by April Gornik and Don and Era Farnsworth, and sculpture by Jane Rosen and Gwynn Murrill.

Thom Ross
As a preview of his upcoming solo exhibition this July, Hemmings Gallery will feature a select group of paintings by artist Thom Ross. A true original, Ross is best known for his striking depictions of the American West. Packed with vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes, his paintings contain a deep questioning of history. Says Ross, “I want my work to bring people closer to the American experience to understand its complexities, its beauty, and its darker sides. History is never as simple as it seems.”
Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Ross has worked in various media over the years, including largescale site installations. His 2005 work “Custer’s Last Stand” was a reenactment of the Battle of Little Bighorn, consisting of hundreds of individually painted, life-sized plywood sculptures at the original site of Medicine Tail Coulee in Montana.
With his paintings, Ross restores a liveliness and complexity to often stale and over-simplified depictions of the American West. His decadeslong fascination and respect for his subject is palpable: “The American West is a canvas, a place where history and myth collide. I paint it because it speaks to something primal in all of us—both the mythic and the real.”
Hemmings Gallery is pleased to present TERRAIN, a group exhibition that explores the idea of the artist as navigator of both external and internal landscapes with an openness to discovery and learning. TERRAIN seeks to go beyond the surface-level elements of the artist’s work and delve into what lies beneath, to highlight the journey the artist undertakes to gain new insights into themselves and their work. Featured artists include:
Hemmings Gallery will feature a selection of Shaw’s oil paintings from his I Stood Still and Was a Tree series. Shaw’s thickly textured, heavily layered canvases reveal time spent building the work, adding and subtracting materials over long stretches. “As a contemporary artist I dance between these two poles, striving to create the artifice of immediacy, urgency, but with surfaces built up and broken down often over the course of years, or even decades. So the painting feels like it ‘just happened’ or is ‘happening now’ yet the surface reveals layers of history, construction, destruction, and repetition.”
Frances Ashforth’s spare paintings, drawings, and monotypes reflect the geography and geology of intersecting habitats that she has visited and studied. She often orients her compositions along a strong horizon line, exploring its relationships within land, water, and sky. Her work can appear deceptively simple yet by focusing on the details and editing the composition, Ashforth’s work evokes memory and knowledge that can only evolve from the focused study of a particular landscape. “Our landscape defines us... My hope is that my work, my simple memories on paper, will help instill the desire to respect and remember what the land continues to give us in all its variety, grit, and beauty.”
Throughout her work, Jan Freeman Long’s artistic pursuit remains the same: “I am interested in the mysterious nature of what endures, both within an internal landscape and what surrounds us in the natural world.” As a student of painting at the California College of the Arts (CCA), Long was quickly attracted to working with abstraction.
Today the fascination remains, “I am interested in visual relationships that express what I don’t have the words for—a territory that is enigmatic, open for exploration—that is my form of visual poetry.” The gallery will feature both her larger works on canvas alongside smaller collage pieces from her Signpost series.
Hallie Maxwell is a Japanese-American interdisciplinary artist based in Idaho and current resident at the James Castle house in Boise. A descendant of survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Maxwell’s work studies themes such as generational trauma, loss, and disconnection from cultural identity. A recipient of the International Sculpture Center’s 2023 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award, Maxwell’s mizuhiki cord sculptures feature numerous hand-tied awaji knots—a traditional symbol of the wish to be tied to someone forever. For Maxwell, “My work tends to be very repetitive so I’m really interested in how by making something over and over again, you are connecting to tradition.”

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”
Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more.
In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 16 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this season include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, Manchester Farms quail, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, vegan sesame noodle bowl, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, smoked beef brisket, fresh steamer clams, seared ahi salad, awesome burgers and sandwiches, to name just a few.
Much of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.
An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and winter evenings around the large central fireplace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

Step inside to the cozy bar and restaurant, full of locals and visitors alike looking to connect at one of the wooden tables over dishes like Fish & Chips, Bangers & Mash, or an Old-Fashioned Bar Burger. For the late-night crowd, The Cellar Pub offers a full bar, complete with draft beers and daily drink and shot specials. Music and sports memorabilia line the walls and bar. Head to the back room and you’ll find booths for chatting with friends as well as a full-size free shuffleboard table and a few arcade games. This pub will leave you feeling full—of good food and good times.
A fully remodeled space and entertainment venue, Whiskey’s on Main offers lunch and dinner service in a casual, comfortable, and family-friendly atmosphere, transitioning into Ketchum’s late-night mountain town scene after dark. For lunch and dinner service, Whiskey’s presents an elevated pub fare menu, including freshly made pizzas with handcrafted dough. It is the return of downtown Ketchum’s familiar comfort food with classic bar choices, including wings and nachos, shareable plates, and more. Find an expanded menu on Saturday and Sunday mornings with the new brunch menu! Recover from a late night of dancing, or fuel up for a large day of adventuring with these classic comforts and creative cocktail offerings.
Offering a happy hour that never disappoints with signature cocktails and local brews, there are plenty of viewing options for your favorite sports teams and games day and night.
During the winter, Whiskey’s will be hosting a number of events and performances. Keep the party going after a day of skiing and check out their curated apres ski parties, every Saturday and Sunday 4-6pm. Check out the events calendar on their website for the most up-to-date information.
Whiskey’s on Main is available for private events from intimate gatherings to large-scale events and four different nicely appointed spaces with great views upstairs on the Baldy View Patio, Main Street Patio, and Alpine Lounge, and there’s the downstairs Whiskey’s Main Floor to accommodate any special occasion.

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s
Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne.
