IT’S OUR HOME EDITOR’S WELCOME

Here we are, welcoming summer! From the excitement of the World Cup to the beauty of a lush, flower-filled valley, this is the time when feeling at home in Sun Valley is so cherished. As friends and family celebrate graduations, weddings, and personal achievements—my own father is turning 90—this wonderful time of year invites us to give thanks and reflect on where we live.

June has become a festive month in the Wood River Valley, filled with fundraisers, galas, festivals, and celebrations. Amid all the preparation and excitement, the message of support and dedication can sometimes be overlooked. For the June edition of SVPN Magazine, themes of empowerment, connection, and philanthropy stand out, reminding us of life’s preciousness and encouraging us to live fully, mindfully, and with a sense of beauty.

Gracing this month’s cover, Ballet Sun Valley showcases The National Ballet of Canada, which promises to deliver two unforgettable evenings of ballet at the Sun Valley Pavilion. Don’t miss out on the inspiration and athleticism these dancers bring, as it will be truly memorable. SVPN has all the details to entice and to attend.

SVPN also covers the Sun Valley Policy Forum (SVPF) and the second annual Summer Institute, which will be held at The Argyros. SVPF will feature prominent historian Sir Niall Ferguson along with many other authors, scholars, and political thinkers.

For gala coverage, SVPN highlights the 44th Sun Valley Wine Auction, a celebration of art and wine for the Sun Valley Museum of Art’s largest fundraiser. There are numerous ways to participate, enjoy, and support arts education for students and adults in the Wood River Valley.

Also in this issue, SVPN presents the 10th annual Sun Valley Forum, themed “All In for Nature: Building a Resilient World.” The Forum provides discussions, panels, workshops, and memorable social events, fostering connection and learning from nature.

More events to read about include Sun Valley Culinary Institute’s fourth annual Welcome Party, which features award-winning chef and restaurateur Jonathon Waxman to raise money for the school’s Student Scholarship Fund. It’s a beautiful evening of cuisine, cocktails, and curated live and silent auctions.

Up in Stanley, don’t miss out on the 10th annual Sun Valley Gathering in Stanley. Curated by James Fowler, this music festival features nationally and internationally acclaimed touring bands, musicians, must-see headliners, and artists. Spend one day or four days at the foot of the snow-capped Sawtooth Mountains for this much-anticipated Idaho event.

In addition, SVPN previews the Baldy Bluebird Festival at River Run Lodge for the 4th of July, which promises a fun weekend filled with great musical acts brought to us by RJK Entertainment and Sun Valley Resort.

This issue also features Events, Arts Etc., and Now Showing sections along with Wellness and Style Dial. In addition, read about Fiamma’s new dining series with the Sun Valley Restaurant Association Dining Guide. And don’t miss the latest real estate listings. Even though this June edition is packed with content, we still managed to include the SVPN Wedding Guide. We have gathered the resources for you to discover why so many choose Sun Valley as their wedding destination.

Remember to respect one another. Even if traffic and construction get in the way, this is our home…

Enjoy June,

World-class ballet with The National Ballet of Canada

Ballet Sun Valley’s reputation for hosting top-tier ballet companies from around the globe continues to soar with this summer’s festival featuring The National Ballet of Canada. Seeing world-class ballet set in the iconic Sun Valley Pavilion, where athletic artistry merges with the beauty of an intimate open-air performance, creates an otherworldly experience. The twonight summer festival in Sun Valley, the company’s only U.S. appearance, is the last stop of an international tour that includes performances in London and Paris.

Dick Davis, Ballet Sun Valley (BSV) Board Chair notes, “Presenting The National Ballet of Canada has been a project that we have been working on for several years. There are a myriad of components that need to align for both the company and Ballet Sun Valley in order for us to bring an international company to the Festival. We are thrilled that this year we were able to make it happen.”

The Four Seasons

“One of those blissful moments when dance, music, and design chassé into alignment to create a moment of sublime beauty.”

—Seeing Dance review

Founded in 1951, The National Ballet of Canada is one of the world’s most renowned ballet companies. It is recognized internationally for its diverse repertoire, contemporary sensibility, and exceptional talent. The National Ballet of Canada has a storied history that includes notable figures like artists Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov, the latter of whom defected to Canada 50 years ago. The company also boasts a long history of pre-eminent artistic directors, and in January 2022, it welcomed its current Artistic Director, Hope Muir.

Muir shares, “I am delighted that The National Ballet of Canada will be making our first appearance at Ballet Sun Valley’s festival this summer. It is amazing to join the list of illustrious companies that have performed at this celebrated festival. I have curated a program highlighting Canadian and international choreographers.”

The National Ballet of Canada’s program will showcase classical and contemporary works through two distinct evenings of exceptional ballet. Three of the works scheduled to be performed are United States premieres. One of these works is British choreographer David Dawson’s contemporary concept of The Four Seasons Summer pas de deux. Dawson is a prolific and celebrated choreographer who was recently named Resident Choreographer at The National Ballet of Canada. The other two U.S. premieres are choreographed by Canadian choreographers. Emma Portner, from Ottawa, Ontario, is an in-demand choreographer whose work extends beyond the world of ballet to include pop music and video. Her work, islands, was originally created for the Norwegian National Ballet and has been described as a sculptural duet.

Portner’s islands is set to a dynamic compilation of music from across many genres including electronic, pop, and classical sounds.

The Sun Valley audience will also see the U.S. premiere of a new work from acclaimed Canadian choreographer Jennifer Archibald. Originally from Toronto, Archibald studied dance at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. She is a lecturer at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale and has worked in theater and film as a movement specialist. Archibald has choreographed for dance companies around the world and is known for blending the world of hip hop and ballet. Over the past year, she has debuted an astounding nine world premieres. Her new work King’s Fall , which was created for The National Ballet of Canada, was described as “Exploring themes of strategy and sacrifice derived from chess, Archibald invites the dancers to push the boundaries of ballet technique and embrace the fearless language that has made her a favourite on the contemporary dance scene.”

In addition to the three U.S. premieres, The National Ballet of Canada will honor one of their most well known artists, Guillaume Côté, as he bids adieu to the company after 27 years. Côté is a national treasure in Canada with his artistry stretching beyond dance to include being a musician, composer, and choreographer. His work, Bolero, will be performed at the festival in celebration of his remarkable career.

The Leaves Are Fading

“This is an elegiac work about time and memory, married harmoniously to an Antonin Dvorak composition... Tudor’s choreography is inventive and constantly evolving.”

This year’s Ballet Sun Valley Summer Festival will also feature several other works, including Antony Tudor’s The Leaves Are Fading in recognition of the 50th anniversary of this timeless ballet.

With 35 dancers performing an eclectic mix of works, each of the two performances will showcase the breathtaking artistry and athleticism of The National Ballet of Canada. Rising stars and seasoned dancers will combine forces to create an unforgettable experience. “The works that will be performed will showcase the skill and dynamic versatility of our artists, and we look forward to sharing them with Sun Valley audiences,” Muir shares.

Accompanying the artists on stage are the Ballet Sun Valley Orchestra musicians led by Maestro Martin West, Conductor and Music Director of both San Francisco Ballet Orchestra and Ballet Sun Valley. A cadre of 28 musicians, who hail from different corners of the United States, will come together to create an exquisite musical backdrop for the performances.

“We feel so fortunate to share this incredible caliber of dance with our special mountain community,” says Kelli Quinlan, Executive Director of BSV. “There is a magical connection that occurs between the artists and the audience, a moving meditation, when they gather together in the Sun Valley Pavilion.” 

An emerging star, Caitlyn Martin, is an exciting stage talent set to perform for the Sun Valley Opera and Broadway’s annual summer Pop Diva Party & Concert. A breakout star of NBC’s The Voice, Martin is a theatrically trained vocalist from Atlanta, Georgia, whose prestigious “four-chair turn” was described by coach Kelly Clarkson as, “One of the best singers she’s ever heard on the show...”

Martin’s talent is impressive and expansive; from working with the Grammy-nominated and popular Southern hip-hop group Nappy Roots to selling out her live performances, this soulful singer-songwriter is an emerging, powerful performer and star not to be missed.

“I enjoy multiple levels and types of performing,” says Martin.

“The Voice was an incredible experience, opening doors for other artistic experiences, including commercial and animation voiceovers, which also led me to release my first song. I gained the confidence to trust my instincts and vocal confidence from my experience on The Voice, which I have forever.”

From Carnegie Hall to sold-out stadiums, Martin infuses her musical theater background into timeless classics, new favorites, and original songs. She has graced stages internationally and at sea with Holland America and Norwegian Cruise Lines, while also contributing her vocal expertise to professional voice acting, mentoring with the Broadway Dreams organization, and collaborating with Grammy-winning artists in the studio. Martin’s Broadway performances include Priscilla Queen of the Desert, A Night With Janis Joplin, All Shook Up, and Austen’s Pride.

“I have always had the desire to experience all performing arts, especially in the musical theater,” says Martin. “Working on making my art unique to myself, which includes all my disciplines in voice-over, songwriting, singing, acting, and musical theater, has been an incredible journey.”

More than just a powerhouse, Martin blends effortless control with rich, dreamy tones, telling soul-stirring stories that are guaranteed to leave you breathless. Expect to hear classic songs enhanced by Martin’s unique and wonderful touch and inspiration, including tracks by Whitney Houston and Gloria Gaynor, as well as songs from hit musicals such as Dreamgirls, Chicago, and Waitress.

SVMOA PROVIDES A CULTURAL CONNECTION FOR ALL

The Sun Valley Museum of Art champions contemporary art and artists who challenge us to see the world anew, experience the unexpected, and ignite our imaginations. As a vibrant, creative, and educational nexus, the Museum presents dynamic exhibitions and diverse programming to spark meaningful encounters with art and ideas. At the heart of its mission is the belief that art holds a unique power to connect people, both to one another and to the larger world around us.

“We fulfill our mission by curating thought-provoking exhibitions featuring nationally and internationally recognized artists alongside important regional voices presenting public programs including artist talks, conversations, and lectures that deepen engagement with the ideas driving our exhibitions,” says SVMoA Executive Director Jennifer Wells Green. “Our comprehensive arts education offerings span all ages—from school partnerships and youth scholarships to adult workshops that foster lifelong learning.” She adds, “Perhaps most importantly, we’re committed to accessibility through free museum admission and educational programs in the museum and classrooms, along with providing valuable learning opportunities for educators who extend that knowledge to their students.”

Through these efforts, SVMoA strengthens community bonds and nurtures a vibrant cultural life in the Valley. It fills a vital need in the Wood River Valley by bringing highquality art and cultural experiences to the community. These experiences enrich local life by exposing audiences to new perspectives, fostering a sense of identity, and creating deeper belonging.

“Sun Valley’s unique position as a destination resort demands cultural offerings that match the exceptional quality of our natural environment,” says Green. “By providing dynamic, meaningful artistic experiences, we contribute significantly to the area’s appeal and strengthen its reputation as a distinguished destination. Visitors drawn initially by our world-class recreation discover they can enjoy arts and culture of equal caliber—creating a more complete experience of place.”

“The arts play a key role by creating connections and spaces where individuals feel valued. Research consistently shows that engaging in the arts improves mental health and cognitive development, including academic performance. The arts are not an extra and are fundamental to education and well-being for youth and the community at large,” says Green. “This year, we’ve added ‘Art’ to the wine auction title, Art & Wine, to reinforce that this event directly supports our mission-critical arts education offerings for our community. Wine Auction funds impact our educational experiences in our museum galleries and classrooms, reaching over 4,000 students a year and all the educators in Blaine County.”

The Sun Valley Wine Auction has been a cornerstone of support for the SVMoA for an impressive 44 years. What makes this event particularly special is its remarkable history. The Wine Auction began with friends simply sharing their archives of rare wines to raise money for what was then a small, burgeoning community arts organization. Over four decades later, this tradition not only endures but has evolved into a spectacular three-day celebration that extends well beyond the auction itself—encompassing a wine walk along the Big Wood River, James Beard Award-winning chefs, world-class vintners, and local adventures that combine wine and the outdoors—all united in support of community and art. 

TIME, TALENT, AND TREASURE

Living life inspired by art

With a passion for art and philanthropy, Krista Simor, the 2025 Sun Valley Wine Auction Chair for the 44th annual benefit for the Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA), June 24-26, is more than just a board member and supporter of the Museum. She is a lover of art. For Krista, art represents a vital connection to her life and spirit, which she embraces in every aspect of her existence. As a devoted advocate for arts education and SVMoA’s scholarship program, Krista acknowledges that when you are not the artist but love the arts, you must have a passion to support it all.

Having traveled extensively to renowned wine regions and with a relentless curiosity for art, culture, and viticulture, the 2025 Sun Valley Wine Auction chair represents and combines her commitment to the arts through philanthropic efforts to support arts education and embrace cultural experiences.

“When I arrived in Sun Valley, I wanted to learn about the Wood River Valley and the needs of our community, and in turn, where my time, talent, and treasure would be a good match,” she says. “A philanthropic leader shared with me there are three tenets of philanthropy—time, talent, and treasure— which I discovered and embraced at The Museum.”

Krista enthusiastically participates in events, exhibitions, classes, and community-inspired activities. She loves how meaningful exhibitions enrich her life, including Hidden Gems: Sun Valley Collects, where she was captivated by the art that people collected. Her involvement in the Art Club, attending lectures, and engaging in lifelong learning satisfies her need for art appreciation and discovery.

“I have had immersive experiences through creativity at the Museum,” she explains. “I remember a prompt from an Art Club activity where I wrote about my transition from moving to Sun Valley full-time. It triggered an emotional response, forming a deeper sense of community and belonging in Sun Valley. It is an experience I will always value.” She adds, “The Museum fuels my curiosity, and when attending its events, you, in turn, find many like-minded people. It’s fulfilling. Elevated experiences come from education and the arts.”

Krista describes her collection as a personal timeline when collecting art. It includes various works from keepsakes to travel mementos, and collectible fine art, all of which her family embraces. For Krista, art makes her house a home, connecting the past and present.

“What the Museum does for the community is my favorite aspect,” she says. “When I watch the Hemingway Elementary students walk to the Museum with their teachers they are on their way to immerse themselves in art. I love seeing this.”

Many people find it hard to understand how a donation to the arts affects a student, children, or any combination of them as an individual or group. Sometimes it is not immediately clear, as it can take years for it to be understood or manifested.

“When art touched me, it was in little standout vignettes of my life,” she says. “It’s creating something and sharing it with someone else. Art is so many things. It can be healing and social. The Museum does an incredible job providing something for everyone, and in our Valley, that’s quite an undertaking. Art and wine become more interesting when you learn about the details, the artist, and the vintner. It’s a culmination of the creative process.”

THE ART OF CUISINE

Celebrating food and education at The Welcome Party

Philanthropic desires in the Wood River Valley significantly impact individuals and the community in meaningful and inspiring ways. For the Sun Valley Culinary Institute (SVCI), this represents an opportunity to attend and support The Welcome Party. It’s a night dedicated to celebrating and connecting on a Sun Valley summer evening while savoring delicious cuisine, fine wine and cocktails, and the company of like-minded, food-loving friends. It’s a moment to reflect on the achievements of SVCI, particularly those of its students and graduates.

This year, The Welcome Party is excited to present James Beard Award-winning Chef Jonathan Waxman as the event’s featured headlining chef. Waxman is the chef and owner of Barbuto and Bar Tizio in Manhattan’s West Village, and the forthcoming Barbuto Brooklyn at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. He also owns Jams at 1 Hotel Central Park in New York City and serves as the chef and partner at Park Tavern On Washington Square in San Francisco. Waxman has appeared on Top Chef Masters, Top Chef, Recipe for Deception, Tournament of Champions, and MasterChef.

Waxman will oversee The Welcome Party’s multi-course dinner with appetizers prepared by current SVCI students at a residence north of Ketchum. As the students reach the final stage of the program, attendees can savor the fruits of their labor while appreciating the culinary arts and SVCI’s impact on their lives and the community.

“It was great to work with many of SVCI’s guest chefs about whom I had written research papers,” says current SVCI student Owen Garrett.

SVCI’s small class size allows students to be recognized as individuals, emphasizing quality education and training. As part of their one-year program, students complete 700 hours of training in the SVCI kitchen and participate in two fourmonth externships at various restaurants in the Valley to gain real-world restaurant experience.

As an art form, culinary arts education uses food as a medium to express emotions and forge a deep connection, uniting people. “You are trying to convey emotions when you are making food,” says 2024 SVCI graduate Christopher Kapeleris. “In that way, food is art, and it is very rewarding.”

Connecting food through art, SVCI collaborated with longtime Sun Valley artist Lisa Holley. Holley is renowned for her botanical illustrations, which encourage viewers to

observe subjects with fresh insight and exploration. She created a study of food and other elements that define SVCI and embody the spirit and principles that SVCI instills in its students. Holley’s original drawing will be an auction item at The Welcome Party.

“I wanted to fill the illustration with as many local food offerings as possible,” she says. “My work is colorful, playful, and educational, so for the SVCI, I was able to give anthropomorphic characteristics to a cow, which is jumping over the moon, a pig fixing up the side of the building, and a chicken running away.”

To raise funds for operating and supporting SVCI students, The Welcome Party will feature a unique collection of foodinspired curated items for live and silent auctions, exclusively available from SVCI.

“When you support an education in the culinary arts, you are contributing to the future of the community and the hospitality industry’s workplace, central to Sun Valley,” says SVCI Executive Director Karl Uri. “Our students become ambassadors of the Valley, and in turn, we benefit from a more stable and sustainable community, and great food.”

The Welcome Party 2025

6pm | $350-$5,000 (Table for ten includes a magnum of Whispering Angel) The event will occur at a private residence north of Ketchum. sunvalleyculinary.org

SVCI continues to set goals and engage the Sun Valley community, aiming to offer full-tuition scholarships and a housing stipend to every qualified Idaho student in the future. To help achieve this goal, The Welcome Party provides an opportunity for individuals to gather with friends, enjoy exceptional cuisine, and support SVCI in inspiring the next generation of culinary talent. 

Sun Valley Forum celebrates 10 years

On a July day in 2015, the Sun Valley Forum was launched, building on local efforts to increase economic resilience in our remote mountain valley, but with a new approach. Bringing together leaders from around the valley and across the globe, 150 people gathered inside the Walnut Avenue Mall to ask: What does resilience mean for us?

Since that first year, the Forum has grown into an impactful four days of programming, including keynote talks, panels, and workshops, alongside unforgettable social experiences—curated dinners at Trail Creek Cabin and Roundhouse, vibrant receptions, and facilitated networking moments that foster deep connections. For those curious about breaking into the world of climate, sustainability, and social impact, the Forum offers an inspiring and welcoming environment to explore new opportunities, build community, and gain real insights into the field.

“Whether you’re a consumer, a voter, a business owner, or just thinking about where your food and energy come from— join us, and let’s figure out how we can all contribute. It doesn’t matter if you’re brandnew to the issue or you’ve been in it forever; you are welcome to be here, to learn, and to connect.”
—Aimée Christensen

Five years before that day in 2015, Aimée Christensen returned to her home in the Valley after spending two decades working on global climate strategy with groups like the World Bank, Google, Baker & McKenzie, and the United States Department of Energy.

“I got home on Christmas Eve, and at noon the power went out for 24 hours,” she says. “All the visitors—who sustain our jobs—left. We’re a recreation-based economy at the edge of the grid, and we had no local generation to provide the power to keep things going.”

Christensen watched a troubling series of events unfold over the next few years, including the Beaver Creek fire that burned 115,000 acres and stymied tourism once more. She saw how climate warming was impacting the place she loved. However, she also observed efforts underway to make the community more resilient, and she got involved with the county’s solar permitting regulations and the summits organized by the Environmental Resource Center and Sun Valley Economic Development.

“There was a lot of energy around diversifying our economy and protecting nature,” she says. “Climate change was making us vulnerable, but there were people who cared deeply. People who were asking: What do we value? What’s our quality of place?”

Sun Valley Forum & CEO, Christensen Global

Christensen believed that, on this foundation, the community could become a center for innovation. As she recalls, “I was asking why aren’t we developing local assets like solar—which in our location has the same potential as Texas or north Florida—to address our need for good jobs and a more resilient energy system?”

She founded the Sun Valley Institute for Resilience to transform risks into opportunities, creating a space for advancing solutions toward economic, ecological, and social resilience despite the mounting challenges. One of the first projects was Solarize Blaine, the first solar adoption campaign in Idaho, which resulted in five times the solar installed during the program’s initial months compared to the entire previous year, channeling investments into this emerging sector. The Institute also partnered with the University of Idaho to host a wildfire resilience workshop and with the Idaho National Laboratory to build a “digital blueprint” for energy backup for critical loads.

The Institute hosted the first Sun Valley Forum in its inaugural year to explore this interaction of economic prosperity, environmental protection, and human well-being, and how action could be taken locally and reach around the globe. U.S. Senator Cory Booker opened that first Forum, speaking about his experience as Newark’s mayor including rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy, and how he saw the power of environmental efforts such as creating more parks, attracting green building developers, and greening the port could serve his goals, creating jobs, improving health, reducing crime and

overall benefiting local quality of life, efforts Christensen had advised and supported.

Other speakers came from the Rockefeller Foundation and Arizona State University, Idaho National Laboratory, NRG, and CAPROCK, as well as local organizations including the Sawtooth National Forest, Blaine County Recreation District, Idaho’s Bounty, and Sagebrush Solar.

“It was an opportunity to bring my global network to Sun Valley to inform our work,” Christensen says. “But also to bring those leaders here to hear from our local innovators, to find collaborations that would help us become pioneers in preparing for the future.”

Over the next eight years, the Forum grew and evolved. The roster of speakers expanded to include corporations like Microsoft and Patagonia, former staff members of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, government officials, tribal leaders, investment managers, artists, and actors—demonstrating how broadly relevant an idea like resilience is.

The event moved to the old nexStage Theatre, where it could host several hundred people, then to the Limelight Hotel Ketchum. By 2019, the Forum had found a home at The Argyros for its biggest, sell-out year, with more than 300 attendees.

Even as things changed, including the move of the Forum from the Institute to its new home under Christensen Global, the event continued to mix uplifting local innovation with fostering global connection and accelerating good work. This year, 2025,

marks the 10th Sun Valley Forum. Over four days, from June 23 to 26, speakers and attendees will gather to learn from nature and Indigenous ways of thinking and to advance solutions by engaging people and mobilizing capital.

The opening afternoon’s keynotes include nature filmmaker and multiple TED mainstage presenter, Louie Schwartzberg, Secretary Wade Crowfoot of the California Natural Resources Agency, and Suzie Hicks “the Climate Chick,” a youth climate educator.

“We have a lot of new speakers this year,” Christensen says. “People are bringing different perspectives. They’re bringing wonder, curiosity, and adventure to our conversation.”

The following three days will focus on storytelling and culture change, business and finance, and transforming food and energy systems. Featuring local speakers Rebecca Rusch, Suzanne Asha Stone, Tyler Norris, and Boise mayor Lauren McLean, alongside visitors from Nature is NonPartisan, Airstream, the Milken Institute, Amazon Climate Pledge Fund, and Nia Impact Capital, sessions will explore coming together around nature, funding the work underway, and reshaping technology, policy, and leadership to benefit prosperity and health.

Each full day features morning panels and on-stage conversations, followed by facilitated workshops in the afternoon that bring speakers and participants together to build on the day’s ideas. Other opportunities to connect abound: from organized hikes and regenerative farm tours, to lunches and dinners. The final afternoon offers journeys for hiking and biking at Galena Lodge, and rafting together on the Main Salmon.

“By the end of the four days, everyone has had a chance to meet everyone else,” says Christensen. “That’s how we create community and connections that support people year-round.”

And while the Forum brings together impressive leaders across sectors and geographies, it is also open to anyone.

“We want anyone who’s interested to be a part of this,” Christensen says. “Whether you’re a consumer, a voter, a business owner, or just thinking about where your food and energy come from—join us, and let’s figure out how we can all contribute. It doesn’t matter if you’re brand-new to the issue or you’ve been in it forever; you are welcome to be here, to learn, and to connect.”

To Christensen, the Forum is all about magic: having the right people in the room who are rolling up their sleeves, welcoming others, and looking to collaborate and be supportive.

“There’s the content, and then there’s the community,” she says.

“It’s the people who make me continue to love this work. These people who care deeply and welcome and inspire others, who help us to learn and make real impact. It’s fun. It’s magic. Join us.” 

THE SPOT

Transforming theater a decade later

When Brett Moellenberg, Peter Burke, Kevin Wade, and Yanna Lantz founded The Spot in 2014, their goal was to bring acting and theater education to the Wood River Valley community. After years of living and working in metropolitan cities, they longed for a space that nurtured creativity and connection—a place where performance could feel intimate, daring, and deeply rooted in the local culture.

The Spot began to truly take shape in 2015 with the arrival of Natalie Battistone and Samuel Mollner, rounding out the team of six creative directors known as “The Cr3w.” From there, a prolific run of productions followed, each shaped by the team’s shared vision and passion. “The Spot wouldn’t be what it is now without the blood, sweat, tears, and creative input from all six of us,” says Lantz.

“We had no idea if the community would even be interested in the type of work we do,” adds Moellenberg, who now serves as creative director and artistic administrator. “We were doing it for ourselves...I am glad the community responded with support for our brand of theater.”

Their first production, created out of necessity to cover rent, received an outpouring of interest and support from the community. This unexpected enthusiasm prompted The Spot to evolve from a humble educational venture into a professional black box “Fearless Theater” company. It is dedicated to producing high-caliber work while continuing to provide educational training and mentorship.

Over the past decade, The Spot has continued to grow into an integral part of the Wood River Valley creative community. It is known for its intimate productions, commitment to educating and including young artists, and thoughtful approach to contemporary storytelling. “The Spot has become an essential part of the cultural fabric of the Wood River Valley,” says board member Susan Flynt. “Their fearless storytelling and commitment to community have helped shape not just conversations around theater, but also around the pressing social issues of our time.” What began as a shared need for education has since evolved into a mission-driven company with a strong presence in the region’s art scene.

“We started in a sort of nebulous space between community and professional and have since become what is known as an SPT (Small Professional Theater) through Actors’ Equity Association,” says Moellenberg. “In the early days, it required a lot of people, including us, working for free or low pay to build our company. We received tremendous support and generosity in those early days to get off the ground.”

“We had no idea if the community would even be interested… I’m glad they responded with support.”

The Spot pledges to bring inclusive, thought-provoking productions to life. The team produces a wide range of shows featuring professionally trained actors, producers, directors, and artisans, while continuing to make education a core part of its mission. Their “Young Company Lite” now welcomes students as early as middle school, providing emerging performers with space to grow in a supportive and challenging environment.

The feedback from students and audiences has been profound. “We have heard so many stories from past students about their connection to The Spot,” says Lantz. “How it gave them a home and a place where they felt valued when they needed it most.”

For many, The Spot is not just a theater and educational space; it is also a home. It’s a safe zone where people are encouraged to explore themselves and the world around them—a place where tough conversations and bold performances build community and trust. At The Spot, strangers become friends. Students become artists, and audiences become part of the story.

For The Cr3w, the journey has been equally rewarding. It’s not merely about success; it’s a story of luck, passion, and purpose. “I feel like I have the best job in the world,” explains Lantz. “I’m so lucky to be working for a company I had a hand in creating. I’m grateful every day to everyone who has made The Spot what it is.”

And they’re not slowing down. The Spot recently wrapped up its tenth and largest season to date, producing six shows.

Alma by Benjamin Benne

Their ability to not only survive but also grow through challenges, including the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, speaks to the strength of their mission and the support of their community, which includes a deeply committed board of directors who continue to champion their work behind the scenes. Their annual Fearless Fundraiser will take place on July 6, bringing together past and present Cr3w members, students, and supporters, with season announcements for 2025-26 on the horizon.

The Spot’s legacy continues to grow a decade in; built on dedication, perseverance, and a belief in the transformative power of theater, its evolution knows no bounds. “I think the legacy of The Spot is cultivating confidence and empathy in our youth,” says Lantz, “and giving people from all backgrounds a place to feel and experience all that it means to be human.”

As The Spot looks toward its next ten years, its mission remains unchanged: to connect through fearless theater and to train performing artists. Their commitment to telling necessary stories and supporting young talent ensures that its impact will continue to flourish far beyond the stage. 

“That initial consultation is my favorite moment,” she says. “I love getting to know a family and their needs and wishes, and finding out if it’s a good fit. Every person and every couple is different, and what’s important to them makes each wedding incomparable.”

Before entering the realm of Sun Valley event planning, Berger spent 20 years in the outdoor industry, working for Nike in her hometown of Portland and then for Scott Sports and Chums in Ketchum. Five years ago, she began seeking a different worklife balance.

“I realized I loved planning events for my friends and family, so why not take a leap of faith?” she says.

For the next four years, she worked with a local event planner, bringing her artistic vision, an eye for detail, and organizational skills from her product development days to wedding design.

In 2024 she launched Alpen Joy, commingling her love of the mountains with her middle name to create a company with heart.

Berger’s approach focuses on understanding what makes each couple unique. She begins with asking about practical needs, budget, emotional vision, and family dynamics. Then, she turns to her curated list of local vendors and begins to develop a plan to turn dreams into reality.

“I rely on local businesses as much as possible,” she says. “That’s part of what makes this place special. We all support and uplift each other.”

Alpen Joy’s menu includes various levels of full-service wedding planning along with a la carte options. Berger rounds

out her year by supporting other personalized experiences, such as dinner parties and ski races.

For weddings, whether couples are local or visitors, she assists them in understanding Sun Valley’s venues, seasons, history, and the plentiful opportunities to curate an unforgettable day.

Planning a wedding in Sun Valley presents challenges, particularly in securing transportation, she says. “There’s a lot of proactive problem-solving. You have to have contingency plans for everything. My role is to be the conductor—I show up early, stay late, and touch all components of the day.”

And she enjoys the challenges that inevitably arise. Last year, Alpen Joy expedited planning for one couple who wanted to ensure that an ailing family member could attend. “It was probably one of the most special things I’ve been a part of,” Berger says.

Another couple—a hockey player and an ice skater—wanted a winter wedding, replete with a rose-decorated ice sculpture, a harpist, and separate photo shoots with white horses at the resort’s outdoor rink.

“We made it all happen,” she shares. “The vendors were willing to go above and beyond, and it was really rewarding.”

At the end of the day, Berger hopes to create an incredible event that captures the true character of each couple. And, to take the stress out of their day.

“It’s important to keep everyone informed, feeling confident and calm,” she says. “The planning should be seamless. The end goal is for the couple to have fun and enjoy this beautiful celebration of their union.” 

WHERE WILDERNESS MEETS COMFORT

Steelhead Lodge and the New Wave of Adventure Travel

A DREAM AND A CHALLENGE

It doesn’t get much better than waking up to the sound of the Salmon River and anticipating a day of adventure with family and close friends. So when childhood pals had the chance to rejuvenate the old Steelhead Inn in Lucile, Idaho, they couldn’t resist.

The property had history, old-timey charm, and loyal customers who returned year after year to its unbeatable location. But it needed vision, owners who were willing to roll up their sleeves, and a whole lot of love.

Above: Lodge-style warmth combined with modern comforts. Right: The Firepit, where days end and tales begin.

Could this roadside inn become a retreat where guests could immerse themselves in the wild without sacrificing comfort? That question became the foundation of everything that has been built at Steelhead Lodge, as the old Inn has now lovingly been renamed.

THE SOFTER SIDE OF WILD

Adventure travel used to be all about pushing limits and roughing it. Multi-day rafting trips meant sleeping on paco pads, and fishing lodges focused on utility, not comfort. But there’s a shift happening. Comfortable experiences in the outdoors have grown more popular, with fishing and rafting attracting wider audiences than just the hardcore enthusiasts. The industry now welcomes travelers who want adrenaline and a good night’s sleep. They’ll tackle challenges during the day, but relish returning to a place that feels like home at sundown.

THE STEELHEAD LODGE EXPERIENCE

Steelhead Lodge is more than a place to stay. It’s a gateway to adventure and a home base for making lifetime memories.

The Lodge sits at a bucolic bend of the Salmon River in the heart of premier steelhead fishing and whitewater rafting country. Stepping outside the comfort of your room means stepping into adventure, whether casting a line at dawn or setting off for a day of conquering the rapids.

Steelhead Lodge offers nine guest rooms—all with river views—and the River House, which together sit on more than an acre of riverfront property boasting 360-degree views of the Salmon and the rugged canyons flanking the river. Each of the

guest rooms blends lodge-style warmth with modern comforts, which, combined with the majestic views and sounds of the river, creates a retreat-like environment. For those seeking more privacy, the two-bedroom River House offers a secluded option, complete with a kitchen, living room, expansive deck, and redwood hot tub overlooking the river.

The property was designed to be one large gathering spot where guests can come together and share stories after a day outdoors. The communal kitchen, affectionately known as “The Back Eddy,” allows guests to cook and swap tales of the fish that didn’t get away and the rapids that did. Outside, a riverfront BBQ area, vegetable and herb garden, gazebo, and fire pit are perfect for unwinding. Cornhole, horseshoes, and a basketball hoop encourage those friendly competitions that seem to break out naturally when people relax.

ACTIVITIES FOR ADVENTUROUS GUESTS

Steelhead Lodge sits along one of the best steelhead fishing rivers in the country. Whether guests are veteran anglers or newcomers, the experience is designed to be enjoyable, with expert guides available through nearby outfitters like Hammer Down River Excursions and Rapid River Outfitters. The Salmon River itself offers everything from scenic floats to challenging whitewater runs, with excursions available for every skill level. Beyond the river, hiking trails wind through the mountains, wildlife abounds, and, in season, the hillsides yield treasures like morel mushrooms for those willing to hunt.

THE BACKSTORY

In the summer of 2020, a group of childhood friends—now adults with families of their own—reunited for a five-day rafting trip down Idaho’s Salmon River. Lifelong friends Amber (Mullen) and Darcy (Cobb) were among the group. They spent the days conquering the rapids and the nights by the campfire, regaling their families with stories from yesteryear.

On the drive back to Sun Valley, Idaho, where Amber lives year-round, she shared that the historic Steelhead Inn was for sale. When Darcy’s husband Matt discovered the world-class fishing in that stretch of the Salmon, the three of them were hooked and decided to embark on the journey together.

Old buildings always come with surprises, and the original Inn was no different—as the friends soon discovered when they launched on a top-to-bottom revamp of the structures and grounds.

Bringing Steelhead Lodge to life wasn’t just about renovation. It was about creating a space where others could experience what Amber, Darcy, Matt, and their group of close friends did on their family river trip. Despite the challenges that came with such a significant overhaul, the friends remained steadfast

in their vision to craft a retreat that felt authentic to Idaho, while also making adventure travel both comfortable and comforting. From that vision, the new Steelhead Lodge was born.

A NEW STANDARD FOR ADVENTURE TRAVEL

Steelhead Lodge is the realization of a dream that started with days on the water and evenings around campfires, when shared stories became even deeper connections. Something clicked during that week on the river—the recognition that this place and these moments deserved to be shared with friends and loved ones.

Adventure travel continues to evolve, and Steelhead Lodge is part of that evolution. The proud new owners have built a retreat that offers both wilderness and comfort. Guests who come to fish, raft, or just take in the scenery become part of the Steelhead Lodge story; one that began with a group of friends on a river and grows with every new arrival. And they’re just getting started. 

ALIVE AND THRIVING

Sawtooth Valley Gathering turns 10!

The mountains are calling, and it’s go time for the Sawtooth Valley Gathering in Stanley, Idaho, the beloved mountain music festival that brings over 35 thrilling performances from some of the nation’s best live music acts— moments you won’t find anywhere else in 2025. Sawtooth Valley Gathering’s 10th anniversary presents a stellar lineup—offthe-charts and worthy of a decade of celebration that includes seven co-headliners—The Cat Empire, Leftover Salmon, Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, John Craigie & the Coffis Brothers, Neal Francis, and The Brothers Comatose. For four days and nights, the Sawtooth peaks will echo with the sounds of rock & roll, folk, Americana, bluegrass, funk, and much more.

“For ten years, we have worked to build a live music experience like no other in the country,” says founder James Fowler. “We love the Stanley community, and they, along with the supporters and attendees, have contributed every year to elevate this festival to where it is today.”

The festival provides a welcome boost to a Stanley summer following the economic and physical scars of last year’s fires. The Sawtooth Mountains offer abundant outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, rafting, fishing, and exploring the world-famous Redfish Lake. With morning workshops, latenight shows, and a full day in between, the Gathering serves as a destination for a wide variety of adventurers and music-loving, like-minded individuals. Early risers will take advantage of local trails and lakes, while late-night revelers will move from club shows to campfire jams.

The festival kicks off on Wednesday, June 18, with a pre-party at 9pm at Kasino Club, followed by four days of live music at multiple venues, including two stages at both Mountain Village

Resort (MVR) and Pioneer Park. Seven late-night shows take place Thursday through Sunday at Mountain Village Resort’s Velvet Falls Dance and Kasino Club. The late shows on Thursday night are included with the Weekend and Single Day Pass. Friday and Saturday late nights are a combined ticket for Mountain Village Resort and Kasino Club. Three brunch sets are featured on Friday and Saturday at the late-night venues, followed by a full day of live music on two stages at Pioneer Park that will keep attendees dancing until midnight. Late-night shows go until 2am and are for those aged 21 and over.

Friday headliners begin with Shovels & Rope, followed by Leftover Salmon closing out the evening. Leftover Salmon are the elder statesmen of the jam band scene, casting a huge, influential shadow over every festival they play. To understand Americana music is to attend a Leftover Salmon show, where they effortlessly glide from bluegrass on the front porch to down-and-dirty Cajun swamps, through the sacred halls of Nashville, and up to the heights of mountain majesties. The young Daniel Donato is a true guitar slinger who played at Robert’s Western World on Nashville’s Broadway for nearly 500 shows. Now, taking his Cosmic Country out on the road and selling out his Northwest tour, Daniel closes Saturday’s performances. Headlining Thursday at MVR is The Cat Empire, hailing from Melbourne, Australia. Their contemporary flamenco, Cuban music, and Aussie rock have been tearing up stages across the UK, Europe, and Australia. Singer-songwriter and storyteller John Craigie, along with the Coffis Brothers, co-headline Sunday, alongside the roots-infused bluegrass band, The Brothers Comatose.

Over 20 local and regional vendors are on-site in Stanley, providing beverages, food, and arts and crafts. Workshops abound throughout the festival, including yoga, meditation, songwriting, percussion, and strings. There’s disc golf to play, swing dancing, and acoustic guitar basics with jam sessions. A kid

tent hosts the Art Zone for creating mosaics, sun and dream catchers, beading, rock painting, hula hooping, and juggling. Chris Cullanan’s Sawtooth Family Jam live karaoke will feature a full Bob Dylan set, and a festival favorite for many years, Steve Poltz returns to surprise and awe with his creative storytelling and improvisational songwriting, performing with friends, both new and old.

Says Fowler, “It’s been a lot of moving parts to get here, but it never feels like work. We love this community and are very privileged to work up here.” The festival is very much a family-run operation. Fowler’s wife, Lauren, manages finances and coordinates vendors and volunteers while juggling a job and the couple’s 17-month-old daughter, Joni. Fowler’s mom, Robbie Pavich, assists with hospitality and merchandise, and his brother, Landon, helps coordinate the workshops, photography, and merchandise design.

For every pass purchased and every single day ticket sold, $1 is donated to four Sawtooth Valley nonprofits. Camping is available at Sawtooth Valley Pioneer Park and Mountain Village Resort’s properties (available to festival pass holders). Campsites open from Wednesday through Monday morning. Ticketing is available online and at the box office in Stanley. New this year, VIP tickets offer an enhanced event experience, from backstage access to the hot springs venue sets. 

PRECISION CARE, CLOSE TO HOME

A powerful new surgical tool is improving care—and lives—right here in our rural community.

When St. Luke’s Wood River acquired robotic assisted surgical technology, it marked another leap forward for patient care in our rural community. Thanks to St. Luke’s Health System and the generosity of donations to St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation, many patients now have access to minimally invasive surgeries that mean smaller incisions, less pain, faster recovery, and—perhaps most importantly—the ability to stay close to home.

Dr. Joel Carlson, a gynecologic surgeon at St. Luke’s Wood River with extensive experience utilizing

robotic assisted surgery and who chaired the Surgical Robotics Committee at his former hospital, has seen first-hand the difference the robotic system has made. “The daVinci 5 is an amazing tool, and we’re so grateful to have it here,” he says. “Half a dozen of my cases would have required a large open incision without the robot. Instead, we were able to operate through three tiny incisions, and the patients went home the same day.”

One of those patients, Brooke Haynes—who also happens to be a nurse at the hospital—agreed to share her story. Brooke had been suffering from significant pelvic pain after a previous hysterectomy. During surgery, Carlson discovered extensive

adhesions around her ovaries and intestines. “Without the robot, she would have needed a big abdominal incision and a few days in the hospital. Instead, with robotic assistance, she had minimal pain and felt dramatically better within just a few days,” he says.

Brooke appreciated the advanced visualization and precision the robotic platform offered, especially given the complexity of her case. “With the robot, Dr. Carlson was able to see better— the visual aspect is significantly improved over traditional surgery,” she says. “The whole procedure would have caused a lot more trauma to my body if they had to do it the old way.”

“The goal is to eventually offer robotic surgery 24/7, 365 days a year—so that no matter when you need care, we have the tools and expertise ready.”
— Dr. Joel Carlson

Brooke’s recovery was swift, and she managed pain with just ice and over-the-counter medications. “It’s amazing how quickly you heal when they don’t have to do a big incision,” she adds, noting that she even felt well enough to travel just days after surgery.

Brooke’s experience underscores the value of having advanced surgical technology available locally, eliminating the need to travel for specialized procedures. She expressed her gratitude for the team at St. Luke’s and for the donors who helped make the program possible. “Patients no longer need to leave the valley to have a less invasive surgery like this,” she says. “We have excellent surgeons here, and the robot not only enhances what they can do—it will also help attract more specialists to our community.” The purchase of the daVinci 5 was made possible thanks to the support of St. Luke’s and generous contributions to the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation. Carlson adds, “It took a great team effort from many individuals, the Foundation, Administration, and the OR staff to achieve a robotics program here at Wood River.”

Since the launch of the robotic program at the end of January, Carlson has completed around 15 cases out of the 40 in total as of mid-April, a strong start for a smaller surgical environment. “We’re actually a little ahead of where I thought we’d be in terms of volume,” he says. The technology has also benefited other specialties, with general surgeons using it for complex gallbladder and hernia surgeries that otherwise would have required major open procedures.

Patients have even sought out St. Luke’s Wood River specifically because of the new robot. “A young woman from California was preparing to travel back home for her surgery when she heard we had the daVinci robot,” Carlson recalls. “She was thrilled to stay here, where she felt more comfortable.”

One of the most exciting features of the new daVinci model is its powerful data collection capabilities. “It collects surgical data— blood loss, instruments used, how much force you applied—and allows me to evaluate and compare my performance anonymously with other surgeons,” says Carlson “That’s never been possible before.” Over time, the system even suggests tutorials and educational resources tailored to the surgeon’s specific areas for improvement.

The tactile feedback feature, another major advancement, helps surgeons better gauge the force they are applying during procedures. “Before, we relied solely on visual clues,” Carlson explains. “Now, it tracks the force in real time. Studies have shown that with this feedback, surgeons can reduce the amount of tension applied during surgery by over 50%, meaning less trauma to tissues and faster recoveries for patients.”

Carlson emphasizes that although the robot is a remarkable tool, it is completely controlled by the surgeon at all times. “It’s important for people to understand that the robot doesn’t do anything on its own. Every movement is guided by the surgeon,” he explains.

The daVinci’s 3D, 4K visualization and dual-camera system allow for extraordinary precision. “The detail we can see now is phenomenal. We can identify things like endometriotic implants that we might have missed before, allowing for much finer dissection,” says Carlson.

Beyond gynecology, the robot will help attract other specialists to the Wood River Valley—such as a urologist, who would now have access to the latest technology. “There’s plenty of urological work in this community,” says Carlson. “Without the robot, a urologist might not have considered practicing here. Now, it’s a real possibility.”

The ultimate vision is to make robotic surgery available around the clock. “Prior to us obtaining this technology, one of the general surgeons joked during a late-night case before we had the robot that what he really needed was a robot,” Carlson shares with a smile. “The goal is to eventually offer robotic surgery 24/7, 365 days a year—so that no matter when you need care, we have the tools and expertise ready.”

“This initiative is about more than just meeting today’s needs,” says Megan Tanous, St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation’s chief development officer. “By investing in tools like robotic assisted surgery systems, we’re paving the way for future growth, expanding access to specialized care, attracting top-tier surgeons and staff, and improving overall community health.”

For patients in our community, the arrival of robotic-assisted surgery isn’t just about technology—it’s about combining high-tech innovation with the personal touch of local care.

Solutions for healing

A head injury can impact the body 16 times more than an ordinary injury. Those who have suffered from concussions know that they can steal months, years, and even a lifetime away from you. There appears to be no resolution, only gradually worsening moodiness, anxiety, brain fog, pain and headaches, and lack of energy. However, there are solutions.

This is exactly how I came to push the frontiers of inquiry in my clinic. I had to find my solutions for concussions, having had several throughout my life. I couldn’t recover. Years later, I found solutions that I provide in my clinic.

Recently, a figure skating coach contacted me asking if I could speak with her skater and her mom when I was there. When I spoke with them, they told me that during a competition warm-up, a skater collided with another skater, hard, and fell back and smacked her head. She could not skate in that competition, and from that day forward, everything changed. That was eight months prior to me speaking with them. This high-level skater, competing at an advanced national level, could now only do basic moves, no jumps, and after one day of training would have to rest for six more days, unable to skate due to fatigue, lack of energy, and loss of balance. At a high level of sport, the body-brain has to be fine-tuned to perform with precision.

A brain injury can significantly impact a person.

I explained the solutions available to them: a procedure that involves a cranio-nasal specific technique, QNRT, and AMIT. We see the resolution of symptoms related to concussions quickly with this trifecta of care.

The standard of care for concussions is to rest and wait. I’ve seen that post-concussion, you can rest and wait for years,

without apparent changes. The balance is never restored, moodiness and anxiety worsen, and pain and headaches generally last. We have better solutions.

The skater and her mom scheduled this procedure, and after eight months of hopelessness, within two sessions, she was back training all day long at the same level as she had previously. I expect she’ll have her best season yet this year. For her third appointment, the mom herself took it because the skater was doing so well that she didn’t need further work. This all took place in a matter of 10 days. A full resolution.

This technique involved no medication, no machines, no supplements. Symptoms were gone. As we move towards a future of health, where we seek out holistic and solution-oriented approaches, we should inquire deeply. There are solutions and avenues of healing and health, and they require diligence to heal the body from the inside-out, to get to an even greater level of understanding and health. There are solutions to autoimmune, concussions, hormone imbalance, anxiety, depression, and trauma. The future of health care involves a multidimensional approach to mental, emotional, physical, neurological, and spiritual health that restores hope, health, and happiness. 

DEMYSTIFYING GLP-1

The weightloss therapy that has taken center stage

As the landscape of health and wellness evolves, GLP-1 (Glucagon-like Peptide-1) therapies have emerged as gamechangers for managing type 2 diabetes, promoting weight loss, and even enhancing overall health. If you’ve heard of medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro and wondered how they work, this guide will break it down.

WHAT IS GLP-1, AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

GLP-1 is a hormone that is produced naturally in your gut. It regulates blood sugar by stimulating insulin release, suppressing glucagon (another blood sugar regulator), and slowing gastric emptying. As a result, blood sugar is better controlled, and you feel fuller after meals.

Pharmaceutical companies have developed GLP-1 receptor agonists—medications that mimic the actions of this hormone. These drugs assist in managing type 2 diabetes, promote weight loss, and even provide cardiovascular and neurological benefits.

POPULAR GLP-1 MEDICATIONS: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Several GLP-1-based medications are available, each with unique characteristics:

Ozempic (Semaglutide)

PURPOSE: Primarily for managing type 2 diabetes, with additional cardiovascular benefits.

WEIGHT LOSS: A secondary benefit, although not explicitly approved for obesity.

FREQUENCY: Weekly injections

Wegovy (Semaglutide):

PURPOSE: Specifically designed for weight loss in individuals with obesity.

FREQUENCY: Weekly injections in greater doses than Ozempic.

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide):

PURPOSE: A dual-action GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist that enhances weight loss and glucose effects.

WEIGHT LOSS: Remarkable results, positioning it as a promising candidate for obesity treatment.

FREQUENCY: Weekly injections

Exenatide (Byetta/Bydureon):

PURPOSE: Older GLP-1 medication for diabetes

WEIGHT LOSS: Modest in comparison to newer options

FREQUENCY: Twice daily (Byetta) or weekly (Bydureon)

INSURANCE COVERAGE: These medications can be expensive, so review your insurance plan and explore savings programs available from manufacturers like Novo Nordisk (Ozempic/Wegovy) and Eli Lilly (Mounjaro).

If you are averse to injections, Rybelsus, an oral version of semaglutide, might be a better option, though it may be slightly less effective.

HOW GLP-1 AIDS WEIGHT LOSS

GLP-1 medications are highly effective for managing weight and offer several benefits:

 APPETITE SUPPRESSION: They act on brain centers that control hunger, leading to a decrease in calorie intake.

 FULLNESS: By slowing the rate of gastric emptying, GLP-1 extends the sensation of fullness after meals.

 BEHAVIORAL SHIFTS: Users report decreased cravings and improved control over portion sizes.

On average, patients receiving GLP-1 therapies can lose 10-15% of their body weight over 12 months, which is significantly more than with lifestyle changes alone.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF GLP-1 THERAPIES

These medications offer more than just weight loss:

 BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL: Ideal for managing type 2 diabetes.

 CARDIOVASCULAR PROTECTION: Reduces the risks of heart attack and stroke, particularly for high-risk individuals.

 NEUROLOGICAL BENEFITS: Recent research indicates potential in slowing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER GLP-1 THERAPIES?

GLP-1 medications are ideal for:

 Individuals with type 2 diabetes requiring improved blood sugar control.

 Individuals facing obesity and aiming for substantial, longterm weight loss.

 Patients at risk for cardiovascular issues are only suitable for specific medications.

Contraindications include:

 Thyroid cancer or pancreatitis

 Severe gastrointestinal issues

 Allergies to GLP-1 medications

EMOTIONAL BENEFITS OF GLP-1 THERAPIES

Beyond their physical effects, GLP-1 medications can also transform your mindset.

 BOOSTING CONFIDENCE: Visible weight loss can increase selfesteem and, in turn, motivation.

 IMPROVING MOOD: Many users have reported a decrease in their emotional eating and a heightened sense of well-being and happiness.

 EMPOWERMENT: Success with these therapies typically results in a domino effect of healthier choices and new habits.

A weight-loss journey can be exciting, especially when you have struggled unsuccessfully for years. I remind my clients to lose weight responsibly. It is paramount to focus on overall health, which means making healthier lifestyle choices. For example, with significant and sudden weight loss, one can experience sarcopenia, which is a loss of muscle mass and something that ought to be avoided. Therefore, resistance and weight training have become vital non-negotiables for responsible weight loss when using these medications.

GLP-1 therapies are revolutionizing diabetes and obesity treatment, offering hope to those struggling with these conditions. If you’re curious whether these medications are suitable for you, consult your healthcare provider to create a plan that fits your needs. 

BALDY BLUEBIRD MUSIC FESTIVAL TAKES FLIGHT

Two-day event becomes July 4th tradition

Concerts at River Run are among Sun Valley’s most coveted events for locals and visitors alike. The iconic, beautiful, and impressive location at the foot of Baldy along the Big Wood River, combined with curated entertainment, is unmatched. Ushering in a new era of music festivals in Sun Valley, the Baldy Bluebird Music Festival returns for its second year at River Run.

“We cannot wait for the 2nd Annual Baldy Bluebird Music Festival this year,” says RJK Entertainment’s Ryan Kolquist. “We are bringing in some amazing talent both evenings with a family fun environment for the 4th of July holidays that everyone will enjoy.”

Kicking off the Festival, Idaho’s own Jeremy McComb will open the first day with his unique brand of country, which is innate to his being as he is a sixth-generation musician in his family.

“I’ve never fit in anywhere, and I’m good with that… I don’t need to be part of anyone’s club. I’m my own thing. No matter how long I’ve been in Nashville, I am still unapologetically defiant… Idaho,” he says.

Following Jeremy McComb, Corey Kent, a self-described “old soul,” finds himself musically at the intersection of rockinfused country, heartland values, and red dirt grit. His Texas hustle has positioned him as Nashville’s next star. About his

Kip Moore

latest release, Black Bandana , he writes, “Not everything has to be about climbing a ladder. I wrote a lot of this record at my ranch in Texas, just staring out the window at our three horses and our three kids riding four-wheelers. I’m trying to create songs about life, where I do life. And I think that’s unique.”

Ian Munsick is crafting a spirited portrait of the American West with his latest album, White Buffalo. The album encompasses unfiltered tales of romance and ranch life, hardworking anthems featuring honkytonk hooks, and mountaintime odes to family and everlasting fun. Munsick’s multiharmony and melody, high-range voice, and clear, beautiful lyrics have captured the attention of Lainey Wilson and Vince Gill, who are featured on his latest album.

“Being from and growing up in Wyoming, I want to bring the West to the rest,” says Munsick. “I never heard the music on the radio about where I was from, and that goes hand in hand for everybody who grew up in the Mountain West. The epitome of country music is about places. I have a unique perspective to bring to country music and Nashville. I have never had a desire to change that.” He adds, “The unique thing about the Rockies is that people always want to go to them, and I want to give a three-minute experience of the West through my music.”

Day two of the Festival will feature one of Sun Valley’s favorite artists, Idaho native Jeff Crosby. Crosby’s brand of Americana and his fiery guitar playing are not to be missed. He knows how to open a show in the Wood River Valley, and you’ll be left wanting more. Performing over 200 shows a year throughout the U.S. and Europe, Crosby has played lead guitar for Widespread Panic, songwriter Jerry Joseph, and Reckless Kelly, who have roots in Wood River Valley, along with Micky & The Motorcars, with whom Crosby has also co-written songs. His Northstar release is a keeper.

After Jeff Crosby, get ready for the neo-traditional country music trio, The Castellows—a band of sisters from rural Georgia who now live in Nashville and are rising stars in

country music. Ellie plays lead guitar, Powell plays the banjo, and Lily provides vocals; they are authentic and beautiful. The Castellows’ songwriting talent is as robust as their voices, evident throughout the trio’s debut EP, A Little Goes a Long Way.

Wrapping up the two-day event, Kip Moore will take the stage with his renowned signature sound, delivering electrifying live shows in stadiums, arenas, and theaters around the globe. He is hailed as “an uncompromising, genre-defying artist firing on all cylinders,” writes Vice/Noisey. AboutKip Moore’s talent, Billboard writes, “[he is] one of country’s more thoughtful artists.” A multiplatinum singer and songwriter, Moore has blazed his own trail and earned his place as one of music’s most beloved artists. With over one billion streams and 2.5 million monthly listeners, Moore has released five critically acclaimed albums and penned more than a dozen chart-topping singles.

“After making its inaugural debut last summer, we’re thrilled to welcome guests and the larger Wood River community back for the second installment of Baldy Bluebird Music Festival this Fourth of July,” says Sun Valley Resort GM and VP Pete Sonntag. “There’s no better way to kick off the summer season here in Sun Valley than with sunny days of hiking, biking, and adventuring finished off with live music at River Run.” 

Jason Wheatley

Jason Wheatley weaves layers of meaning and oil paint into every still life he creates. Drawn to the idea that a still life is anything but still, he juxtaposes curious wildlife with carefully arranged objects. Enamored with the liminal space between imagination and reality, Wheatley imbues each painting with a quiet ambiguity. His meticulously composed scenes invite repeated viewings, revealing new details each time. His work is a reminder that nature is never separate from the art we create; it is interwoven and speaks in the language of silence. Through these paintings, Wheatley invites the viewer to pause, engage with the in-between, and consider what might be hidden in plain sight. In his work, silence is never empty. It is the space where the unseen takes form.

Curated Photography

From fashionable drama to quiet city streets, this exhibition invites viewers to explore the many dimensions of the photographic medium. It features works by Rodney Smith, Melvin Sokolsky, Maria Svarbova, and others.

Photographer Rodney Smith, a trained theologian, created images that reflected his deep understanding of the human condition. His photographs speak to our inner longing for beauty, tenderness, and levity, earning him a distinct place in the world of fine art photography.

Melvin Sokolsky was renowned for his surrealist fashion photography, particularly for his groundbreaking work in Paris during the 1960s. Best known for his Hieronymus Boschinspired “Bubble” series, which featured model Simone D’Aillencourt suspended in a Plexiglas bubble above the streets of Paris, Sokolsky redefined the visual language of fashion photography.

Maria Svarbova , a Slovakian photographer born in 1988, centers her work on the relationship between people and place. Growing up in the shadow of communist Czechoslovakia, Svarbova drew inspiration from the functionalist architecture of her local aquatic center. Her largest series to date, Swimming Pool , explores this space through muted pastels, overexposed tones, and models devoid of what she calls “emotional extravagance.” The result is a body of work that feels both futuristic and minimal, challenging our perceptions of space and emotion.

Artifacts in Motion

Presenting a selection of new works by featured artists, including a striking collection of watercolor paintings by Theodore Villa . Of Apache and Spanish descent, Villa draws inspiration from the artifacts he encounters in museums and private collections. His work transforms these historical objects into contemporary visual narratives, rendered in vibrant washes of color.

Villa’s paintings pulse with life and energy, offering a dynamic counterpoint to the stillness of traditional museum displays. His meticulous attention to texture brings a tactile realism to the work—beads gleam with brilliance, buckskin appears handtanned, fur looks luxuriously real, and feathers seem so lifelike that viewers are often compelled to lean in for a closer look. Often infused with motion and humor, Villa’s work connects the past to the present in bold and compelling ways.

Additional works on display include pieces by gallery artists Bill Barrett, Rudi Broschofsky, Russell Chatham, Edward Curtis, Ewoud de Groot, Gordon McConnell, Joan Mitchell, Ken Peloke, Kollabs, Billy Schenck, Andy Warhol, David Yarrow, and more.

Second Nature

June 13 through August 1

OCHI is pleased to present Second Nature, a group exhibition featuring works by Brittany Fanning, Matthew F. Fisher, Elijah Ford, Emily Marchand, Andy Mister, Maggie Shafran, Polly Shindler, Sam Shoemaker, Ian Stanton, and Anna Valdez.

Second Nature gathers a group of artists whose works reveal the deep entanglement of memory, daily life, and the natural world. Across paintings, sculptures, and ceramics, the exhibition explores the artists’ instinctual need to create with place as their muse. Andy Mister’s pastel and acrylic snapshots of domestic life focus on everyday flowers in a jar on a windowsill. Meanwhile, the interior and exterior worlds collapse into one another in the paintings of Brittany Fanning, Polly Shindler, and Anna Valdez. Elijah Ford and Ian Stanton’s clouds fleetingly shape-shift, folding together reflection and wonder, while Matthew F. Fisher

and Maggie Shafran’s paintings consider shifting perspectives. Emily Marchand’s large companion vessels celebrate the oftenoverlooked labor of pollinators, positioning her lush, hand-painted ceramics as elegies to a fragile ecological balance. Sam Shoemaker’s mushroom sculptures introduce the mythology of adaptation and survival.

Through considered observation and surreal improvisation, the artists of Second Nature instinctively embed the natural world into their works, not as a static backdrop but a living, breathing presence within memory, routine, and imagination. Whether tied to home, studio, ocean, or mountain, the places we carry within us contain abundant narratives.

Floral Reverie

As an introduction to the larger theme, Gail Severn Gallery’s June exhibition presents an evocative collection of contemporary artworks that center on the flower as a metaphor for impermanence and as a symbol of renewal and regeneration.

Featured work includes Michael Gregory’s serene still lifes of tulips, executed in chiaroscuro style to elevate the humble flower on a small scale. Mixed media and editioned works by the late Hung Liu include layered portraits that incorporate floral elements as vessels of cultural memory and personal

history. The large and dramatic canvases of Kathy Moss capture the delicate intricacies of flowers and the cyclical rhythms of nature. Focusing on light, motion, time, and natural forces, Diane Andrews Hall honors the intricate beauty of nature by depicting plant life with remarkable precision and detail.

Betsy Margolius’s botanical works take a more meticulous and scientific approach to the structure of flowers. In her intimate graphite and charcoal drawings on paper, Maggie Shafran stitches together square images of Dutch flower paintings by Jan van Hysum, and in doing so, reveals the passage of time and the ephemeral cycles of life contained within the reimagined original painting.

Lisa Kokin’s leaf and pod thread work, made from repurposed cowboy book pages, melds the masculine narrative with the fragility of flowers. Mixed media paintings on mylar and panel by Alison Stewart push the boundaries of texture and palette, creating floral compositions that straddle figuration and abstraction. Jan Aronson’s flower and native grass paintings highlight her interest in natural form, structure, and color. These pieces will be a preview for her solo show in July.

Thom Ross

For over 40 years, artist Thom Ross has been inspired by the American West. For Ross, “The American frontier is a place where history and myth collide. It’s full of powerful tales of good versus evil... stories that persist because it’s an eternal battle played out in the world even within our own selves.”

Hemmings Gallery

340 Walnut Avenue | Ketchum

208.254.1097

Packed with vibrant colors, bold brushstrokes, and kinetic imagery, his paintings restore a liveliness and complexity to often oversimplified, stale depictions of frontier America. “Rather than paint in a realistic, photographic style, I‘d much rather suggest something of the eternal, mythical quality of the West.”

With an unmistakable style, Ross often paints his larger-than-life subjects on an equally impressive scale. A self-described “storyteller who paints,” Ross is eager to connect his subjects from the past with the audiences of today.

Hemmings Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Ross’s work in July. The Opening Night reception with the artist will be on July 11 from 5:30-7pm.

Drawing on techniques from a background in realism but referencing the warped perspectives of Flemish Primitive paintings, Bird weaves landscape and still life painting together to create self-determined worlds.

Layering and rearranging motifs from the history of Western oil painting, Bird uses an old language to depict her contemporary life. Making reference to the surreal twists of Bosch, van Eyck and other Flemish Primitives, her paintings “weird” the landscape, often forefronting humble personal objects like seashells, feathers, and fruit set against deep mystifying horizons.

In her studio, there may be a few items on display from which she works but the actual painting lives in her mind and the result is pure imagination. For Bird, this means paintings that both “consider the enduring appeal of symbolism and world modeling... while still leaving room for genuine uncertainty and mystery.”

Animalia IX

This exhibit highlights the enduring relationship between humans and animals through a range of contemporary artistic interpretations. Featuring works across painting, sculpture, drawing, and intricate feather art, the exhibition presents animals not merely as subjects but as symbolic mirrors of ourselves—embodying vulnerability, wildness, myth, and memory.

The exhibition includes works by Alex Rohrig, Robb Putnam, Theodore Waddell, Margaret Keelan, Chris Maynard, and Robert McCauley, each offering a unique artistic perspective on the emotional, symbolic, and ecological roles animals play in our lives.

Land & Legacy: Stories in the Landscape

Land & Legacy: Stories in the Landscape brings together the work of contemporary artists Laura McPhee, Michael Gregory, Hung Liu, Victoria Adams, and Tom Hammick, whose practices explore the deep and multifaceted connections between people and place. Through a diverse range of media and visual languages, the exhibition reflects on how landscapes are not merely backgrounds to human experience but dynamic terrains marked by memory, history, and cultural identity.

SUNDAYS AT FIAMMA Supper series presents top chefs

When chefs Britt Rescigno and Kinsey Leodler decided to open their fine dining establishment, Fiamma , in March 2025, they aimed to offer food and wine experiences that would feature collaborations and special events with celebrated chefs and vintners.

“It has always been our desire and fundamental to us to expose and elevate Sun Valley’s culinary scene,” says Chef Kinsey Leodler. “Sun Valley has incredible events throughout the year, so we reached out to all of our top chef friends in the culinary world to expose the Sun Valley community to them for many interests, especially for fundraisers and events where food and wine are seminal.”

By introducing the year-round Sunday Supper Series with Fiamma & Friends, Rescigno and Leodler aim to connect the community to exquisite and elevated food experiences with impeccable hospitality through “delicious and sexy” cuisine while providing excellent service. As a monthly, ticketed multi-course dining event, the Sunday Supper Series with Fiamma & Friends will feature collaborations with a celebrity chef, an awardwinning winemaker, or a partnership from across the nation.

“Fiamma is expanding Sun Valley’s culinary scene and dining palate, which is essential for growth,” says Rescigno. “We are pushing boundaries and expectations not only with the cuisine we serve and how it is presented, but also through our exceptional hand-crafted cocktail list and our broad, beautiful, and spectacular wine list.”

The Sunday Supper Series with Fiamma & Friends will begin on June 8 with James Beard Award-winning Chef Karen Akunowicz, a celebrated chef, author, and Top Chef alumna. She will showcase her bold, soulful Italian flavors by the fire alongside the Fiamma team for a collaborative meal rooted in warmth and creativity.

On June 22, Fiamma presents an extraordinary evening celebrating the art of live-fire cooking and world-class wines in collaboration with Moët Hennessy, featuring Dom Ruinart. Enjoy an exclusive dinner with a curated prix fixe menu paired with rare and reserve Dom Ruinart selections.

A Top Chef finalist and acclaimed culinary talent, Chef Maria Mazon will present her innovative take on Sonoran cuisine on July 13, blending borderland flavors with creative flair. Mazon has wowed audiences on Top Chef and Chopped, and her work has been featured in The New York Times, National Geographic, and USA Today.

Texas native and Top Chef finalist and “Fan Favorite,” Chef Casey Thompson will visit Fiamma on August 10, bringing her culinary expertise that has taken her from Thailand to Argentina—refining her skills and deepening her passion for food and wine. Thompson launched her career under Chef Dean Fearing at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, and she has opened acclaimed restaurants in Texas and San Francisco, along with Folktable in Sonoma, California.

Fiamma welcomes Chef Antonia Lofaso on August 24. Known for blending global flavors with her Italian-American roots, Lofaso, a Top Chef favorite and Tournament of Champions Season 6 winner, is the driving force behind acclaimed Los Angeles restaurants Scopa Italian Roots and Black Market Liquor Bar. With a career shaped by prestigious kitchens, TV appearances, and her cookbook, Lofaso leads with creativity, authenticity, and heart.

“With our Sunday Supper Series and all dining at Fiamma, we want to offer something new and unique,” says Leodler. “We want Fiamma to be a house of moments and celebration.” 

PIONEER SALOON

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

Clockwise from top: The Pioneer Saloon originally opened in the 1950s; flavorful beef on the grill; the interior of Pioneer Saloon.

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more.

In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 16 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this season include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, Manchester Farms quail, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, vegan sesame noodle bowl, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, smoked beef brisket, fresh steamer clams, seared ahi salad, awesome burgers and sandwiches, to name just a few.

Much of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.

An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and summer evenings on the outdoor terrace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

THE CELLAR PUB

Walking down the stairs into this traditional pub is a rite of passage for any visitor to Ketchum, along with downing one of the establishment’s famous Moscow Mules, served in a copper cup and sure to quench anyone’s thirst on a hot summer day. Dine on the outdoor patio or step inside the bar and restaurant, full of locals and visitors alike looking to connect over one of the wooden tables with dishes like Fish & Chips, Bangers & Mash, or an Old-Fashioned Bar Burger. For the late-night crowd, The Cellar Pub offers a full bar, complete with draft beers and daily drink and shot specials. Music and sports memorabilia line the walls and bar. Head to the back room and you’ll find booths for chatting with friends as well as a full-size free shuffleboard table and a few arcade games. This pub will leave you feeling full—of good food and good times.

To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from former owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, Michel

presents classic French cuisine that is also inspired by his background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital). Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.
