EDITOR’S WELCOME In this edition of SVPN, our Wellness contributor, Dr. Molly Brown, has opened CENTERED. Read about how Molly continues to thrive in the wellness space with her practice. In other Wellness news, we feature Zenergy Health Club & Spa and how swimming is one of the most effective exercises, especially in their pool! In addition, St. Luke’s shares how their work goes beyond the hospital to reach community non-profits and their health missions, too—it’s outstanding. Also, we present the Flourish Foundation and its work for keeping our Valley mentally balanced through meditation and other practices.

ONWARD IN 2024 As we enter 2024 and look back on 2023, there’s much to feel grateful and fortunate about. We live in a beautiful and robust community in the mountains of south-central Idaho. It was a busy year in our little hamlet of Sun Valley with many events, occasions, and celebrations. At SVPN Magazine, we are grateful to our readers and supporters. Most of all, we love helping the incredible efforts of Valley-wide organizations in their fundraising goals and community outreach. We also love sharing Sun Valley culture and life with everyone who picks up our magazine—we thank you all and wish everyone a safe, healthy, happy, and prosperous year ahead. We planned something for everyone in this January 2024 edition of SVPN Magazine, so get out your calendars! To start, we are excited about the opening of Whiskey’s on Main. Its remodeled and reimagined space brings a spark to Ketchum’s Main Street with après ski hours, live music, and a scrumptious bar food menu offering a spot for all to enjoy. As it is that time of year, make plans for the Sun Valley Film Festival Winter Screening Series and Special Screenings for the holidays and beyond. We have the scoop, and this year’s festival is from February 28 through March 3, 2024. Over the holidays, LANCO will perform for two nights at The Argyros. Read more about them and also meet The Argyros’s new Executive Director, Melissa Mathews, who will take over the position as Casey Mott becomes Artistic Director. 38

svpn-mag.com

Learn about Idarado’s world-class production company and facility, making Sun Valley a creative and professional hub for photography, film, and more. We also spotlight the talents of Valley resident Carole McClellan, who has a fantastic flare as a fashion designer who worked with the band Heart and many others, continuing to create cutting-edge Western couture fashion. There’s plenty of creative inspiration in this issue, with an article on local artist Sarah Bird showing at Hemmings Gallery and the opening of our newest fine art gallery, Sun Valley Contemporary Gallery. Make plans for Gallery Walk on Friday, December 29, to stop by all of the other galleries covered in our Now Showing section. We cover Project Big Wood and how an idea from fly fishing guide Amanda Bauman may save our Big Wood River and its fish. Up in Stanley, read about live music and outdoor events for the holidays and winter, as the cold is never an issue there. We also feature designer Jennifer Hoey’s work and her new transition to Suede Studio. It is quite a milestone, and our Style Dial section adds to this Sun Valley-inspired look, with some great ideas for the new year ahead. Our Sun Valley Restaurant Association Dining Guide for winter 2024 features the best places to dine and savor delicious cuisine, libations, and more, along with some of the Valley’s most exciting real estate finds. Enjoy this special time of year in Sun Valley, as it’s what makes this special place both a home and a destination for so many. Happy Holidays and New Year,

Sabina Dana Plasse

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR SVFF WINTER SCREENINGS Sun Valley Film Festival presents new releases for holiday filmgoers by Marlowe Early

In anticipation of the upcoming Festival, February 28 through March 3, 2024, the Sun Valley Film Festival (SVFF) is teasing audiences with a Winter Screening Series to get into the holiday spirit. On the docket are three highly-anticipated releases: National Geographic’s documentary series Arctic Ascent with Alex Honnold, and dramatic features The Color Purple and Napoleon.

Arctic Ascent with Alex Honnold

This winter, SVFF will give audiences a first look at National Geographic’s Arctic Ascent on Wednesday, December 27, at The Argyros— months ahead of the series’ February 2024 release date. The film, a nail-biting tale of esteemed climber Alex Honnold’s journey tackling a formidable Greenland cliff with no known climbers, will be followed by a digital Q&A with Honnold himself. svpn-mag.com

The Color Purple

Annually, the Festival serves as a modern embodiment of Sun Valley’s legacy as Hollywood’s original ski Shangri-la.

On Thursday, December 28, director Bliz Bazawule’s take on the 1985 Oscar-winning film The Color Purple will hit The Argyros big screen. Bazawule’s musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s classic novel about AfricanAmerican women living in the South in the 1900s has received considerable buzz for Oscar nods of its own. Both of these screenings will be preceded by special cocktail receptions for supporters of Sun Valley Film Festival’s education and outreach initiatives. These special, invitation-only gatherings offer an opportunity to learn about the Festival’s impact on the community and celebrate the generous supporters who make this important contribution possible. Further amplifying enthusiasm for February’s Festival, SVFF is set to present a Special Screening of Napoleon on January 14 in collaboration with Apple Original Films. The event will spotlight an in-person Q&A with the film’s esteemed producer, Kevin Walsh, renowned

for his work on House of Gucci and Manchester by the Sea. Before the screening, Walsh will join supporters of SVFF’s education and outreach programs at the historic Roundhouse Lodge for a private celebration. These robust Winter Screenings offer a glimpse of what awaits audiences in yet another Festival brimming with acclaimed films, exceptional talent, and unforgettable events. Annually, the Festival serves as a modern embodiment of Sun Valley’s legacy as Hollywood’s original ski Shangri-la. The event attracts industry heavyweights and film connoisseurs to an environment marked by creativity and accessibility. To keep the Festival accessible to all, SVFF offers a selection of passes with varying levels of access. Passes for 2024 are now on sale for the February event, and the purchase of a Patron Pass includes unlimited access to year-round screenings leading up to the Festival.  For more information on supporting SVFF education and outreach and access to these private events, contact Development Director Jenny Dupre at jenny@sunvalleyfilmfestival.org.

BETTER THAN EVER More flights to and from Sun Valley on tap for the 2023-24 winter season Fly Sun Valley Alliance (FSVA), in partnership with Sun Valley Resort and the Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN), has announced that the SUN airline flight schedule for the 2023-24 winter season will offer daily nonstop flights to six cities—Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Denver, and Salt Lake City— with additional frequency on most routes for the season. United Airlines will increase its daily yearround nonstop service from Denver (DEN) to two flights daily from December 21 through April 8, will increase its nonstop flights from Chicago (ORD) to daily from December 21 through March 30, and, in addition to the daily flights from Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco, has added a second daily flight on the weekends from December 22 through March 30. Alaska Airlines, which flies nonstop year-round from Seattle (SEA) to SUN, will offer one to two daily flights from December 14 through April 15. Delta Air Lines, which serves Sun Valley yearround, will offer two daily nonstop flights from Salt Lake City (SLC) throughout the winter season, increasing to three daily flights December 16 through January 31, except on December 24, 25, and 31. 50

svpn-mag.com

“This coming winter’s SUN flight schedule is the strongest it’s ever been, with more frequency on most of our nonstop routes,” says Fly Sun Valley Alliance Executive Director Carol Waller. She notes that the organization’s strategic focus is to improve convenience and access for SUN air travelers—locals, part-time residents, friends, family, and visitors—and that this winter’s robust flight schedule is a tangible result. SUN’s overall air seat capacity for the 2023-24 winter period of November through April will be up 19% from the previous winter season. Winter flight reliability at SUN has also improved dramatically over the last few years due to the new landing system approach technology used by the airlines, resulting in a 95% flight completion rate during the winter season. The mission of the nonprofit Fly Sun Valley Alliance is to improve air service to Sun Valley for the benefit of the community. The key community partners in FSVA’s air service development efforts include the Sun Valley Air Service Board, the Sun Valley Resort, and Friedman Memorial Airport. Visit Sun Valley is a key strategic partner in marketing air service. 

RENOWNED THEATER ARTISTS CONNECT WITH SV COMMUNITY A big year for new playwrights’ residency Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) brought extraordinary artists into conversation with the Wood River Valley community this past summer and fall. In August, the nonprofit SVPR screened the Academy Award-winning A24 film The Whale and held a Q&A with the screenwriter, Idaho native, and MacArthur “Genius” Samuel D. Hunter at the Argyros Performing Arts Center, which was buzzing with many Wood River Valley arts supporters. In September, SVPR welcomed back to Idaho their 20222023 Resident Playwright, Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok, who participated in a Q&A with SVPR Artistic Director John Baker and Off-Broadway Director Caitlin Sullivan. While in Ketchum, Martyna also workshopped her brand new play with Tony Award nominee Marin Ireland, Nick Sacks, and Aly Wepplo and shared it with Ketchum audiences, receiving a great reception.

In October, SVPR’s 2023-2024 Resident Playwright, Pulitzer finalist Rajiv Joseph, arrived in town to spend a month as the writer-in-residence at the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House through their partnership with The Community Library. Rajiv began work on a new play, and SVPR produced a reading of his 2009 hit play Gruesome Playground Injuries, featuring local actors David Janeski and Aly Wepplo. As part of their mission to meet the local community’s needs, SVPR also piloted a free playwriting workshop connecting Rajiv with 20 students from local Wood River Valley high schools. Rajiv will return in 2024 with his new work to share with the community.  sunvalleyplaywrights.org

INTRODUCING WHISKEY’S ON MAIN A reimagined space for a new era by Sabina Dana Plasse

The anticipation for the opening of Whiskey’s on Main brings forth visions of Ketchum’s vibrant nightlife with a go-to après ski scene, game day belly-up sessions at the bar, and everything in between and will usher in a new chapter for Ketchum’s Main Street. With so many stories of a time when Main Street had nightly live music and happy patrons moving from one establishment to another, the brand-new, remodeled and rebuilt, and reimagined from its studs Whiskey’s on Main could not be more exciting for a ski town that continues to elevate its attractions and culture. Since 1938, when it was operating as the Alpine Club, a local watering hole with some not-so-legal gambling, the Whiskey’s on Main location has seen its share of patrons, including Ernest Hemingway. Morphing into the Alpine Saloon, Alpine Café, and Alpine Mexican Café, it was not until 1977 that Whiskey Jacques’ became Ketchum’s epicenter of ski town nightlife, especially as a premier live music venue with many famous musicians and bands gracing its stage (and who could forget Dollar Night). In 2008, a fire razed Whiskey’s to the ground, and from its ashes, a new space was created and continued to accommodate the community until the pandemic. PHOTOS BY HALSEY PIERCE

Fast-forward, and a total renovation from top to bottom will now carry Ketchum’s beloved venue into the future to provide a new and elevated experience with the help of visionary Brandon Kuvara. A longtime Sun Valley visitor with his family who owned a condo in Ketchum, Kuvara spent time in the winters and summers in Ketchum, including attending Bruce Willis’s New Year’s Eve parties. “I had so many fond memories of being a kid in Sun Valley, especially with my father,” says Kuvara. “When my father passed, I wanted to visit places that he loved, so I decided to visit Sun Valley, and within seconds, I knew I needed to be here.” Kuvara’s desire to make Whiskey’s on Main a Ketchum centerpiece is a project from the heart that will also pay homage to the location’s history. The new look of Whiskey’s was created with the local community in mind as an establishment for casual, elevated bar food, craft signature cocktails, a variety of beers on draft, and family-friendly dining. And when the dinner hour is over, Whiskey’s on Main returns to its previous history as a live music venue in downtown Ketchum, where you will find a spot on the dance floor or the upstairs patio with views of Bald Mountain in the background. svpn-mag.com

“People are going to like the community of a four-sided bar,” says Kuvara. “And a nod to the bar’s history that has been serving locals, residents, visitors, and tourists for 85 years. You don’t want to lose that history because that’s amazing. We look forward to making new history and telling new stories from those who meet at the bar and how they are drawn here to locals, visitors, and others who can’t wait to have their live music venue and Whiskey’s back—only it’s better than ever imagined.” The new Whiskey’s on Main will to fill the needs of a small mountain resort town with a happy hour crew, a family-oriented restaurant where children are welcome during the day, a sports bar with 14 flatscreen TVs, and a live music venue for dancing the night away, all within Whiskey’s new mountain modern aesthetic of clean lines and brighter lighting. Plans for lunch and dinner service will unfold with the welcome return of pizzas and classic bar food, including wings, nachos, and fondue, to name a few.

DREAMING

BIG

Dual leadership established at The Argyros by Martha Williams

The Argyros Performing Arts Center opened its doors five years ago in the fall of 2018, and since that time, it has invited hundreds of performers to share their talents with the Sun Valley community. From comedians Lewis Black and Eddie Ifft to musicians Graham Nash and G. Love & Special Sauce, the beautiful and technically astounding Tierney Theatre has also welcomed more than 100,000 visitors for its array of films, plays, and performances. Now hosting over 100 public-facing events a year, The Argyros has established itself as a cultural center in Ketchum, regularly partnering with other nonprofits and curating its impressive, diverse programming slate. Behind much of that is Casey Wilder Mott, who has acted as the organization’s Executive Director for the last four and a half years. Mott is proud of the programming and partnerships The Argyros has developed. Still, for some time, he’s also been thinking about how to build on the organization’s track record—to bring in bigger and better acts, to keep community favorites like Time for Three and Isabella Boylston returning year after year, and to address some internal challenges The Argyros has faced since its inception. PHOTOS BY RAY J GADD

“To get there, we needed someone fully focused on the artistic offerings,” Mott says. “And the best way to do that is with a partner—someone highly skilled at running an organization. You need both, and they’re different skill sets and worldviews.” In early 2022, Mott began testing the idea of a dual leadership model with advisors, board members, and staff. There were some questions and concerns, but he was pleased with how quickly support rallied around the concept. The process took time and careful planning, though. “We didn’t want to rush it,” says Mott. “It wasn’t a crisis, but about positioning for growth and future success, and how we could most intelligently do that.” So began the search for a new Executive Director in early 2023 to take over The Argyros’s day-to-day operations, finances, administration, and fundraising. The position would work closely with a newly created Artistic Director position, which Mott would inhabit, allowing him to focus his efforts on developing programs and the sponsorships that help make events possible.

“Our ambition is for this to be a nationally recognized arts center.” —Casey Mott

After a long and careful search, Melissa Mathews came on board as The Argyros’s new Executive Director on November 6. An Idaho native and established nonprofit leader who relocated to the Valley in 2021 with her family, Mathews most recently served as President of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Idaho, Nevada, Utah Chapter (an organization that went fully remote during the COVID-19 pandemic). Mathews grew up in Twin Falls but spent time visiting the Wood River Valley from childhood to young adulthood. After living in Salt Lake City on and off since 1992, her family was ready for a change. “I’ve always loved this area,” she says. “And one year, I brought my husband to the Walk MS at St. Luke’s so he could see the area, and he just fell in love.” They eventually purchased land mid-valley, built a home, and settled into a new life replete with middle and high school hockey and lacrosse games. But Mathews was eager to connect with the community more and knew that working for a local organization would fulfill that desire.“I’m so grateful to live here, and now to work here,” she says. “And for it to be a role that’s a challenge for me and a good opportunity. I get to get up every day and give back.” Before spending eight years with the MS Society, Mathews worked for the Girl Scouts in Chicago, Atlanta, and Utah, focusing on development and marketing and also in development for the Utah Symphony | Utah Opera. “I grew up in the arts,” she says, describing her training in ballet through her teenage years and college studies in piano. “The arts have always been a big part of my life, and so coming back and working in an organization like this is exciting.” “Every nonprofit I’ve been with, I’ve had to believe in the mission. That’s important to me,” says Mathews. “I was raised that way. My parents were very philanthropic and always wanted to give back to the community. It’s been nice to utilize my education and upbringing to make that a career.” 68

“Every nonprofit I’ve been with, I’ve had to believe in the mission. That’s important to me.” —Melissa Mathews

The Argyros hoped they’d find someone local but knew it would be challenging. And Mathews’s background, says Mott, “was exactly what we were looking for.” Looking ahead, Mathews wants to make sure that The Argyros is reaching a broad audience. “I aim to ensure that we’re reaching everyone. They hear about what amazing performances we have. Not everyone knows exactly who we are or what we’re doing. It’s important to put that message out: we welcome everyone and want to meet the community where they are to see what types of performances resonate with everybody,” she explains. With the new dual leadership model, The Argyros hopes to continue stimulating creativity throughout the community with innovative programming and higher caliber artistic offerings. “There aren’t going to be any radical changes in the nearterm,” says Mott. “We aim to take the things we excel at and force multiply them. At the same time, we’ll look for opportunities for organizational growth, which will take time. Two years from now, though, five years from now, The Argyros will look different. Our ambition is for this to be a nationally recognized arts center. That’s a big swing for a facility in a town of 4,000 people to be taking. But that’s where we want to go. I’m excited about the future and what this means for us. We can continue to challenge ourselves and take bigger risks.”  theargyros.org

NAVIGATING MID-LIFE CHANGES with Dr. de la Torre

EXPLORING PERIMENOPAUSE, MENOPAUSE, AND HORMONE HEALTH

In a world where every woman will experience menopause in mid-life, there’s an alarming gap in understanding how to navigate this natural transition. Despite spending at least one-third of their lives in post-menopause, most women feel undereducated and unsupported during this crucial phase. Many women grapple with stigma and find themselves unsure of where to seek help. Often, they refrain from discussing their concerns with medical professionals, feeling embarrassed about aging or the changes they’re experiencing. On the other side, many medical providers admit they lack the necessary education to support women through perimenopause, menopause, or hormonerelated issues. Enter Dr. de la Torre, a double board-certified OBGYN, Lifestyle Medicine physician, Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, and Certified Menopause Practitioner. Since her move to Wood River Valley in 2021, Dr. de la Torre has become a beacon of hope for women seeking understanding and empowerment during these life transitions. We had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. de la Torre for an insightful Q&A session, where she sheds light on perimenopause, menopause, and hormone health. QUESTION: How would a woman know if she is

going through perimenopause or is menopausal?

70

svpn-mag.com

What are some signs and symptoms? What is the typical age for these life transitions? Dr. de la Torre: This topic can be confusing

for many. The nomenclature has not always been consistent. When a woman has not had a period for 12 consecutive months, she is considered “in menopause” or “menopausal.” The period leading up to that point is known as “perimenopause.” In the United States, the average age of menopause is 51, and the average duration of perimenopause is four years. However, for some women, perimenopause can extend for 8-10 years. Perimenopause presents numerous symptoms, including well-known ones like changes in the menstrual cycle, brain fog, hot flashes, and night sweats. But there are lesser-known symptoms, such as joint pain, mood swings, fluctuations in libido, changes in skin and hair, and vaginal health issues. PMS symptoms can worsen during this period,

and anxiety and depression may increase, posing challenges for many women. Women often fail to recognize these symptoms as related to hormonal changes, as they can come and go. I recommend that women track these changes and their menstrual cycles, as some symptoms may only occur during the week of their period in the early stages of perimenopause. QUESTION: What should a woman do if she is

experiencing any of these symptoms?

Dr. de la Torre: It’s crucial to make an

appointment with a medical provider to discuss these concerns. Sadly, many women have been dismissed or had their concerns downplayed in the past. No one should have to endure this important life transition without support. Properly managing perimenopause and menopause can significantly impact a woman’s long-term health, affecting areas like bone health, brain health, and cardiovascular health. It can also improve her quality of life, including mood, energy levels, relationships, and daily well-being. QUESTION: Does everyone need Hormone

Replacement Therapy (HRT)? What about bioidentical HRT?

Dr. de la Torre: Hormone replacement therapy is

a valuable option for women (and even men during andropause), but it may not be suitable for everyone. A personalized discussion with a provider is necessary to assess the individual’s specific needs and the healthiest, safest approach. The risks associated with hormone therapy vary from person to person, depending on factors such as hormone type, dosage, duration, and method of administration. The age at which a woman starts HRT also plays a role. For women under 60, within 10 years of menopause, and with no major HRT-related risks, the benefits typically outweigh the risks. In the realm of hormones, there are numerous options, including bioidentical HRT, conventional HRT, compounded HRT, and more. “Bioidentical hormones” can have varying definitions, causing confusion. From a healthcare professional’s perspective, bioidentical means hormones that are chemically identical to those naturally produced

in a woman’s body during her reproductive years. However, for some, it may refer to hormones exclusively compounded in pharmacies and not FDA approved. In my practice, I use bioidentical hormones as I consider them the safest and most effective way to provide hormones to women. QUESTION: Tell us more about your new medical

practice.

Dr. de la Torre: My practice differs from a typical

OBGYN setup, as I see women on a consultative basis, rather than performing annual exams or delivering babies. I engage with women of all ages to discuss their health concerns, symptoms, and overall well-being. Our discussions encompass a wide range of topics, including sleep, nutrition, mood, exercise, sexual health, and relationships.

For younger women, we may focus on treating hormonal issues like PCOS, PMS/PMDD, fertility optimization, or pregnancy planning. For many mid-life patients, perimenopause and menopause management take center stage. I adopt a highly personalized approach for each patient, recognizing that everyone’s body responds uniquely to hormonal changes. Additionally, I consider factors like gut health, thyroid function, and adrenal health, adhering to a Functional Medicine approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of all bodily systems. I also host group meetings for friends interested in discussing common women’s health concerns, such as perimenopause, menopause, fertility issues, or PCOS. These gatherings provide a supportive environment for women to share their experiences and ask questions they might not feel comfortable addressing individually. It’s an informative and enjoyable way to empower women with knowledge about their health.

DR. MOLLY BROWN INTRODUCES CENTERED 72

A natural and neurologicallybased clinic offers consciousnessbased medicine by Sabina Dana Plasse

In our Sun Valley universe, as a community and as individuals, we can experience health and wellness at numerous levels of participation and practice. As wellness evolves beyond traditional medical routes, Dr. Molly Brown is at the forefront of neurologically-based, natural medicine, passionately holding space for limitless healing.

“Having a clear, efficient brain and nervous system allows us to think clearly and contribute positively. Increased consciousness around health and truly sustainable solutions and systems are the best solution moving forward to experience inspiration and energy daily.” —Dr. Molly Brown

Molly has been fine-tuning her method for nearly 20 years as a holistic doctor with effective, unique, and progressive techniques and therapies. Her successes are often miraculous, especially for patients who have tried “everything” and are in a worsening cycle of frustration. With pain, immune and autoimmune conditions, hormone imbalance, skin conditions, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, trauma, or the common cold, Molly achieves results, restoring hope and health where it has been lost. Molly decided to make Sun Valley her home in 2002 and pursue a career in health and wellness that gives her a deep level of understanding of the complexity of the body, mind, and soul holistically, spiritually, and naturally. “From the beginning, I was drawn to brain-based doctors rooted in consciousness. I have found that the brain and nervous system control everything in our bodies—organ/glandular systems, hormones, sleep, and emotions,” shares Molly. “We cannot treat the body from the neck down simply with supplements. This is why all my methods are neurologicallybased. The body changes instantly when we ‘reset’ the brain and nervous system.” svpn-mag.com

Molly originally opened her plant-based, organic café GLOW in 2008 and began a journey of understanding and practicing conscious medicine to achieve life-changing results for people of all ages. Seasonal group cleanses, meal plans, and lifestyle support were just the beginning of where she is today: in CENTERED’s new offices and treatment rooms on First Avenue and Sun Valley Road. At CENTERED, Dr. Molly Brown’s passion shines brightly. With warmth, energy, competence, and confidence, Molly works her magic with cutting-edge technology and carefully refined techniques in her organic, peaceful clinic nestled in the beauty of Sun Valley. With Baldy as her backdrop, the clinic is surrounded by Sun Valley’s brown creased mountains, sparkling clear rivers, and mineral-rich hot springs. CENTERED’s space is clean, contemporary, and welcoming, reflecting how we all live and breathe—a healthy space on all levels as well as aesthetically beautiful, healing, and calm. In her early years, Molly studied with Dr. Gabriel Cousens, MD, a world-renowned psychiatrist with a focus on spirituality, diet, and lifestyle changes over psychotropic medications. Dr. Cousens’s nutrition program included fasting, detoxification, spiritual nutrition, the ancient systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, plant-based nutrition, detoxification, fasting, and complete transformation through cellular and spiritual inspiration and regeneration. “This was one of the most transformative times of my life in completely upgrading my health on all levels, healing from autoimmune issues including Lyme’s disease, low thyroid, anxiety, and sports injury. I learned from this foundation and personally that the body can and will heal, given the right tools and guidance,” tells Molly. From there, Molly went on to study natural, neurologicallybased techniques and methods with some of the most brilliant minds after earning a doctorate in natural medicine. Molly steadfastly incorporated results-oriented methods into her practice in a completely innovative and unique blend of methods and technology for cellular and mitochondrial regeneration. Her clinic is one of a kind.

Cryotherapy is a cooling therapy that tightens, tones, and slims, while improving lymph drainage.

Developing deep spiritual practices, including yoga, meditation, and fasting, Molly’s devotion and discipline to personal health allow her to connect deeply to help others. “We are unique in the blend of methods we use, so not only can we resolve pain and simple issues relating to pain, but we can also resolve complex neuropsychoimmunological cases. I love working with challenging and complex cases.” CENTERED is focused on the future of healthcare and a positive, optimal mental, physical, and emotional health state. The goal is a state of flow, clarity, and optimism in a confused and confusing world. “Every aspect of our health is relevant right now to experience focus, flow, and restore order to our broken systems, both inside and around us. It is time to create new healthcare systems and use them to empower change and sovereignty,” says Molly. With an estimated one in five Americans suffering from autoimmune disorders, 51 million people in chronic pain, and one in eight children diagnosed with a brain disorder, Molly is here to set order in a disordered world. “I’ve cultivated my clinic to be at the forefront of contemporary healthcare, creating coherence between the mind, brain, nervous and immune systems, hormones, and neuromuscular bodies,” she says. “In this way, people can move forward and contribute optimally to the world and each other rather than spending their whole lives focused on decline and sickness. Part of our work is simply holding space for educating people and guiding them so they can feel better than ever. Many people don’t believe that initially, but it’s true.” svpn-mag.com

Indeed, Molly is a beacon of change and empowerment in her professional sphere. Using QNRT, Neurofeedback, AMIT method, PEMF technology, Vasper, Live O2, Nano VI, dry sauna, Red/NIR light, cold plunge, nutrition, and an immersive, intensive “five-day reset” model, CENTERED’s care is embedded in natural, neurologically-based methods with an emphasis on cellular regeneration. “Chronic illness and a diseased society are inherently unsustainable. From the health of our soil and food systems to our daily lifestyle choices, we can sustain and regenerate our health daily,” says Molly. “Having a clear, efficient brain and nervous system allows us to think clearly and contribute positively. Increased consciousness around health and truly sustainable solutions are the best solution moving forward to experience inspiration and energy daily. My mission is to evolve the future of healthcare through a transformative approach to brain-based wellness.” CENTERED sees transformations and miracles daily, giving people their lives back and treating them with confidence after being in a place of frustration, hopelessness, and despair. It is part of a movement and an option for innovative healthcare systems offering results. The immersive model allows hope, energy, vitality, and joy to be restored typically within three to five days, and the “five-day reset model” is an immersive “intensive” experience designed to achieve results quickly. Just meeting Molly, who radiates health, energy, vitality, and positivity, with deep intelligence and connection, is a refreshing and inspiring testament to her approach. “It is work that I am very passionate about because I believe everyone should be able to experience daily energy, inspiration, and happiness,” says Molly. “I love the transformation. We have amazing clients, and when they feel good, we see them completely blossom in all areas of their lives, in all ways. Even years later, they continue to thrive. It’s exciting, empowering, and incredible.”

Vasper/Live O2 technology increases VO2 Max, accelerates sports recovery, increases testosterone, and HGH while lowering cortisol.

She adds, “Saving people time, energy, quality of life, and delivering results is something I am very focused on. I know the process because I have been there, too. When you have lost health and all energy, you never take it for granted again. We offer solutions time and time again to the most complicated and challenging conditions that drain a lot of time, energy, and finances from people.” Common challenges of anxiety, depression, autoimmune, confusion, despair, low energy, sickness, and unhappiness disappear through programs at CENTERED. Often, within simply five days, people’s eyes, power, and spirit have entirely changed. “This is the greatest gift in the world to give to people trying to do their best in a challenging world,” says Molly. “They just need a little help and guidance. As the media production service industry continues to grow and expand in Sun Valley, Idaho, and across the Mountain West, Cory Smith, founder of Idarado Media, has been right in the thick of it. Creating professional products for local clientele and major universal brands, Smith has grown Idarado Media into one of the Valley’s most accessible and functional production companies in south-central Idaho. As a professional snowboarder sponsored by Smith Optics, Smith transitioned from the slopes to working for Smith Optics in their once-Ketchum headquarters as the marketing director for athlete promotions svpn-mag.com

and events. Learning the trade of outdoor production for athletes and products from in front of and behind the camera, Smith found his niche in the production business and has yet to look back. “I worked for Smith Optics for 15 years and launched Idarado Media when Smith transitioned out of the Valley,” he says. “That’s when things really began to grow for me. There’s a rather large client base and outdoor industry connected to Sun Valley.” Today, Smith has established one of the largest production facilities in Idaho, where nationally known brands, including Dickies, Traeger Wood Fired Grills, Amazon, Yeti, First Lite, and many others, have used his facilities, crew, and production capabilities. In addition, Idarado’s first-hand knowledge of the outdoors to lift and pivot brands to an audience seeking a connection to the outdoors as a lifestyle and culture has been immeasurable. Locally, Idarado is growing made-in-Idaho brands, such as Decked, to national levels with its ability to provide professional studio productions.

Above: Idarado’s multifunctional space can be used for photography and video production.

“From me and a camera as a grassroots operation to six fulltime employees, Idarado has all the gear and capabilities for high-quality and high-end large and small productions,” says Smith. “From concept to delivery, we can help a company with the entire production process.” Idarado’s world-class team of Jon Mancuso, Meredith Richardson, Tyler Allyn, Max Polito, and Tommy Riggio are instrumental in the operation of Idarado and crafted the company into what it is today. Idarado’s production studio, perhaps the most significant public studio in Idaho, is perfect for video and still photography. The studio space is optimized to produce highend deliverables efficiently. The ample studio space enables unique camera moves, diverse lighting set-ups, and the ability to shoot various subjects. While the Idarado production team is ready to tackle any phase of the production pipeline, the studio space is available to rent independently, and the team can handle outdoor filming and set-ups in a studio as needed. This copious space enables shooting for multiple aspect ratios, positioning cameras in unique and creative ways, swapping backdrops, and capturing a wide variety of subjects. As an experienced team, Idarado can simultaneously handle studio and general production needs with a dedication to the craft of telling compelling stories and working with clients to build their brands.

Opposite: An advanced lighting system grid is a unique professional resource.

“We live in a mecca for outdoor sports for enjoying and using it creatively for films, videos, and marketing. With the addition of Idarado’s new studio, it beats the city traffic of Los Angeles, and who can resist the ability to ski at lunch and return to work within an hour? We’re trying to tap into those living in the Wood River Valley who need access to an in-house production and post-production facility,” Smith shares. “The main goal is to elevate our production to do bigger things, hire more people, and allow more people to live in the Valley full-time. All of my employees live in the Valley, and I want to continue supporting the lifestyle.”  Idarado Media 323 Lewis Street-Suite C | Ketchum idarado.com

PROJECT BIG WOOD

Project Big Wood, one of the Wood River Valley’s newest nonprofits, was established for the future quality and health of the Big Wood River. At the heart of the Wood River Valley, the Big Wood River is fundamental to the function of the Valley. However, in recent years, there has been a noticeable decline in its native trout population and size, signifying an overall concern for the river’s health. Heeding the alarm, Project Big Wood was created to study, advocate, restore, and revitalize the Big Wood River as a sustainable ecosystem and thriving fishery. Project Big Wood’s Executive Director, Amanda Bauman, a Valley native and fly fishing guide, could not ignore what was happening to the river, the water, and the ecosystem dependent on its survival. the core values that define the Wood River Valley. There is a strong sense of community, a focus on local engagement, an unyielding commitment to innovation, and a dedication to championing the heart of our valley, which all define the Big Wood River. As a guide, I couldn’t ignore the consistent and concerning transformations within the Big Wood River ecosystem—diminished mayfly hatches, dwindling fish populations, heightened usage, and a steady decline in the ecosystem’s overall health. These observations made me ponder how I could contribute to lasting change, ensuring the sustainability of our fishery, ecosystem, and water resources svpn-mag.com

for future generations. Project Big Wood emerged as the ideal vehicle for this mission, and I am fortunate to be a part of this organization. It’s an entity that places a premium on innovation, science, growth, and advocacy. Applying these principles makes real and transformative change within a community possible and deeply fulfilling. SDP: What is the mission of Project Big Wood? AB: Our mission is to revitalize the Big Wood River with a

core focus on collecting water quality and river health data, exist as an education and advocacy source for the community, restore the Big Wood River’s watershed, and above all, activate local pride for this precious and crucial resource to our existence. The Big Wood River is our sole water source in the Valley and must meet various needs. Like many watersheds across the Western region, the Big Wood River must accommodate the demands of different user groups. These include existing water rights for the agricultural community, municipal requirements, domestic use, and habitat preservation needs. As our community grows, our water demands increase, and we must uphold historical irrigation rights. However, water flows have not historically increased. This means we face more significant needs with a diminishing water supply. 84

SDP: What projects or initiatives is the organization

planning for the future? AB: After many conversations, we determined that the Big Wood River needed a comprehensive water quality and monitoring program for conservation and public use. Quality assessment will initially focus on sampling 13 sites within the Big Wood River watershed. We will collect samples monthly and send them to the Woodwell Climate Research Center for analysis in partnership with Science on the Fly. Science on the Fly is an organization dedicated to uniting citizen and community scientists to understand how watersheds are evolving across North America and around the world. We’re looking forward to seeing our data integrated into a broader study of watersheds across North America. This presents a unique opportunity to closely examine the Big Wood River while comparing it to watersheds across the United States. We started taking samples earlier this fall—once they’re analyzed, we’ll share the results on our website, projectbigwood.org. We’re also excited to take it further and roll this baseline data into educational opportunities throughout the Valley. We hope that this information will inform conservation efforts and empower our Valley to know how to care.

Bauman’s logs are important record-keeping for quality control in the Big Wood River.

SDP: What is unique about your organization? AB: Project Big Wood is unique because we’ve chosen

a collaborative approach in developing and prioritizing projects, action plans, and coordinated restoration work. Working with partners and the community will best support basin-wide strategies to enhance this incredible resource we all share. We aim to integrate our water quality program within the community, particularly in schools and with the help of volunteers. Our partnership with the Sage School has marked the beginning of this initiative, with students collecting samples at four main stem sites along the Big Wood River. Involving the next generation in our efforts will ignite their passion for our valley and inspire innovative ways to protect it in the future. These young individuals are the future stewards of the Wood River Valley, and we see them as the driving force behind conservation. SDP: How is the Project Big Wood supported? AB: Donor contributions support creative solutions and

“It’s our mission and our responsibility to ensure the sustainability and vitality of the Big Wood River.” —Amanda Bauman

allow for flexibility to adapt to the challenges the Big Wood River faces. Thanks to private donations, we are more agile, innovative, and able to build connections with each donor who has a personal connection to the Big Wood River. We hope this significantly impacts our work and creates lasting relationships within the community. We want to know how the Big Wood River affects everyone and encourage those connections to become potential donors. SDP: How do you envision the future

of the organization? AB: As Project Big Wood continues to expand and our role within the community evolves, we recognize the critical need for dynamic growth. We must unite with like-minded organizations, educational programming, and governmental bodies to mend it. By forging these strategic partnerships, we can amplify our impact, pool resources, and access valuable expertise to address our watershed’s complex challenges more effectively. It’s our mission and our responsibility to ensure the sustainability and vitality of the Big Wood River. The river is more than a water source. It is the heartbeat of our home. It’s our home water—time to mend it.  Learn more about Project Big Wood and get involved at projectbigwood.org or email mendit@projectbigwood.org. PHOTO BY HILARY MAYBERRY

AUDACIOUS DESIGN The couture of Carole McClellan

by Lori Williams

At 14, Carole McClellan walked into the iconic Twin Falls store, The Leatherman—it was the early ‘70s—and was immediately enticed by a $120 leather blazer she couldn’t afford. So, she decided to make her own with a Betsy Johnson pattern, using split cowhide she’d found at Koppel’s Browzeville, a nearby surplus store. When she brought the jacket back into The Leatherman to inquire if the owner, Micky Joelson, could set snaps, he was so impressed by the talent he offered her an apprenticeship. Her deerskin bib shirts became one of their best sellers. Never underestimate the influence of 4-H on a Magic Valley farm girl. Says McClellan, “Every good farm girl learned to cook and sew.”

“Every good farm girl learned to cook and sew.” —Carole McClellan

From a young age, McClellan knew she wanted to design rock and roll clothing and was just rebel enough to ignore all the naysayers. When she wasn’t helping cultivate beans and sugar beets, she would make and wear her flamboyant clothes, win 4-H Awards, and fuel the designs and dreams inside her head, cued not from Vogue but from vinyl album covers. “Living alongside my mother’s all-encompassing tasteful creativity also helped me realize I had a God-given talent, and if I practiced audacity, it would open doors to experience the world and a lifestyle that was truly open to divine intervention,” says McClellan. 86

After graduation, in spite of more skepticism than support from others, Carole went to live with her aunt’s family in Seattle to attend apparel design school, where she trained in couture millinery and fur. She kept her head down and practiced. Her designs began infiltrating Seattle’s custom couture scene. It was at The Woolly Mammoth, a custom leather shop where she worked in Seattle’s University District, where Ann Wilson of Heart finally found the designer she’d heard about and been looking for in her search for couture gypsy designs for the Little Queen album. McClellan was 19 and had been asked to meet Wilson in the engineering booth at Kaye-Smith Studios in Seattle. Wilson was laying down the voice tracks for “Barracuda.” 90

“Ann told me, ‘You can either work in the music industry now or keep going to design school,’” says McClellan. Without hesitation, McClellan joined Heart on the road for a decades-long collaboration designing and fabricating memorable rock and roll couture, which continues with Wilson to this day. “I was young and energetic and bootstrapped it myself, which is difficult in the apparel business,” she says. Along the serendipitous journey, McClellan was supported by amazing mentors who helped expand her talent. along her career trajectory. Doors did open. Eventually, McClellan developed her signature designs, selling to the Seattle grunge rockstars of the ’90s, exclusive clients, and celebrities, as well as Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and 35 specialty shops across America, including Mario’s and Butch Blum. She went on to work in New York, Paris, Milan, and Toronto. Today, she lives and creates designs in her Sun Valley home/studio, including made-to-measure couture leather and essentials, re-styled fur garments, ready-to-wear accessories, and home essentials. “It was time to go back to Idaho,” shares McClellan. “I have found extreme evolution in my design function and aesthetic since I moved back, the most satisfying of my career.” Magic happens at eight unique industrial sewing machines. Fur hangs everywhere, vintage pieces to be taken apart, cleaned, and recut. There is sable for a hooded parka, chinchilla and fox fur pillows, and orylag rabbit for bedding pieces. She points out lightweight and waterresistant goatskin meant for summer motorcycle jackets. red, and yellow dyed fur patterned in ‘57 Chevy flames along the bottom sweep of a leather trench. She marries leather to fur harmoniously, an exquisite fusion of timeless elements and contemporary minimalism. It is a magnificent statement of her talent. “I have this creativity I just can’t keep inside,” McClellan says. “Every piece has my hands on it for the entire process from sketch to finished design.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHF) now owns a signature iconic collection of McClellan’s Heart designs, including ephemera, original sketches, backstage passes, and garments. Last August, RRHF opened a new Heart display, part of their Legends of Rock, a rotating exhibit featuring handwritten lyrics, outfits, and instruments from some of history’s greatest and most iconic artists. McClellan attended the opening, which included the first piece she designed for Wilson for the Little Queen album—a purple suede dress— the design sketched that fortuitous night in 1977 at the KayeSmith Studios. McClellan’s one-of-a-kind, on-trend designs are currently found at Finerie Style Studio in Seattle and Ketchum’s Consign Design. By appointment only, she offers a variety of unique pieces and fur services at her atelier in Bellevue. This holiday season, she unveils her exquisite new lavish collection of upcycled, sustainable real fur, thoughtfully curated for both men’s and women’s fashion and exquisite interior design, available for purchase online or at her atelier—time-honored, treasured furs, reimagined for generations to come.  carolemcclellan.com svpn-mag.com

CHEERS TO A NOURISHING NEW YEAR Fine fare and fun in Stanley

STANLEY

by Lori Williams

There’s no better New Year’s resolution than to purpose regular escapes to the Sawtooth Valley for soul- and self-care, solitude, or sled shredding. Plan to stay for a meal while enjoying the plush powder and miles of groomed trails. While many businesses in Stanley hibernate through the long, cold winter, two restaurants offer delightful choices before or après anything. In Stanley’s Town Square, the Stanley Supper Club reopens on January 5, 2024, for the winter season through March. Chefs and owners Heather Logan and Ben Barlow have created a relaxed environment where simple, nourishing food is prepared with skill and great care. The two spent years traveling the world and working in Seattle’s fine dining scene, so they know how to take care of their customers. They’d always dreamed of bringing that same care and excellent fare to Stanley, where they met and fell in love. After continuing to visit for many years, the Stanley Supper Club was finally realized. PHOTO BY RACHAELLE GRIMSRUD

STANLEY

“More than anything, we hope the Supper Club is just a quality restaurant where you can feel at ease with a homemade meal.” —Heather Logan

“We’ve been given the most amazing opportunity to serve the food that excites us in a place we love,” says Heather. “Since we’ve opened, it has been fun to see the restaurant be everything from a local gathering spot to an annual Stanley visit or just a place to refuel after being outdoors. More than anything, we hope the Supper Club is just a quality restaurant where you can feel at ease with a homemade meal.” Highlights of the winter menu will include a pot roast dinner, pork doughnuts, beef stroganoff, and a variety of great veggies. If you need a take-and-go, they offer picnic staples and a picnic basket full of delights, such as homemade sourdough, whipped ricotta, smoked whitefish, and lamb terrine. Any time spent in the Sawtooths leaves a lasting impression and lingers long in the soul. The fare at the Stanley High Country Inn has the same effect. Their winter brunch menu will leave a delicious imprint on your taste buds. Some local favorites include the Idaho hash, waffles, farrow wheat winter salad, griddled banana bread, and steak sandwich. The meals come with a starter and a main dish. Beginning January 11 through April, the Inn is open to the public for brunch Thursday through Sunday, 8am-12pm. Any meal there promises to be a truly unforgettable one. The Stanley High Country Inn hosts their all-inclusive New Year’s Yoga Retreat, January 4-7, 2024, with Taryn Smith so that you can begin your year with nourishing, lighthearted yoga, chef-catered meals, hot springs, and hikes in the snowy Sawtooth Mountains. “What makes this retreat special is the community we create,” says Taryn. “It’s a gorgeous way to begin a new year with new friends.” Check the Stanley High Country Inn website for availability at stanleyinn.com. 94

The 11th Annual Sawtooth Outdoor Bonspiel (S.O.B.) comes to town January 26-28, 2024. The S.O.B. is a 16team, three-day open bonspiel (curling tournament) with a three-game guarantee on Stanley’s unique outdoor ice rink. The Boise Curling Club hosts the epic weekend, which begins at 5pm on Friday and ends at noon on Sunday. “Every year, we get teams from all over the United States, including Canada,” says S.O.B. Committee Chairman Jared Belsher. “It has become so popular that registration fills up within seconds of opening. This year, we’re trying a lottery registration system to make it more fair for everyone. If a team doesn’t get in one year, we set it up so that their odds of getting in the next year are significantly increased.” Spectators are welcome, and attendance is free. Cheering on- and off-ice activities are worth the trip alone. There will be propane heaters and a fire outside to keep spectators and curlers warm. Early February events include the Stanley Skating Club’s 7th Annual Draw Pond Hockey Tournament, February 2-4, 2024, with registration open beginning in January. Bring your appetite north for good eats and great events. On February 11, the Superbowl game will be shown on the big screen at Mountain Village Resort’s Velvet Falls Dance Hall with food and drink specials and a lively party atmosphere.  Stanley Supper Club 250 Niece Avenue | Stanley stanleysupperclub.com Stanley High Country Inn 525 Ace of Diamonds Street | Stanley stanleyinn.com

FROM JENNIFER HOEY INTERIOR DESIGN TO SUEDE STUDIO A 20-year journey

In the world of interior design, where creativity meets precision and personal style creates captivating spaces, Jennifer Hoey has carved out a remarkable path over the past two decades. Join us as we embark on a journey through the evolution of her design firm, from its inception as Jennifer Hoey Interior Design to its transformation into the brand known today as Suede Studio. This story of challenges, successes, and pivotal moments has shaped an incredible career. A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR’S BEGINNINGS

“In 2003, I was 24 years old, fueled by a unique opportunity that beckoned me to the world of interior design,” shares Jennifer. “I founded Jennifer Hoey Interior Design from my humble home office in Ketchum, Idaho.” Starting her own business was no small feat, and Jennifer grappled with anxieties. She questioned whether a 24-yearold designer could earn the trust of a client investing over half a million dollars in furniture. However, the client’s leap of faith became the catalyst for her career. This project, remarkable in its scale, presented Jennifer with a mixture of panic and excitement—a familiar feeling for young entrepreneurs. She found herself donning multiple hats—purchaser, designer, spec writer—all while navigating uncharted waters and adhering to highperformance standards. svpn-mag.com

147

Jennifer’s approach is not just about aesthetics but also about creating a streamlined, efficient, and organized process.

NETWORKING AND BUILDING RECOGNITION

CERTIFICATION AND EXPERTISE

“To introduce a fresh design perspective to Sun Valley, I had to be proactive,” Jennifer reflects. “I reached out to architects and builders, introducing myself and showcasing my vision. I wanted to be the pioneer who brought a modern touch to the area’s design landscape.”

“In 2006, I passed the NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) certification exam,” says Jennifer. “While it didn’t change my design approach drastically, it set me apart in a state where few were licensed. It reassured clients of my expertise.”

To capitalize on early success, Jennifer focused on relationship-building and project completion. She understood that to gain recognition, she needed to put her work in front of the right audiences. This meant designing and managing projects and also investing time in photographing completed work and submitting it for publication. 150

Jennifer’s approach is about aesthetics and creating a streamlined, efficient, and organized process. Her ability to produce clear, practical drawings and her highly organized approach has endeared her to architects, contractors, and tradespeople.

DESIGNING ENOTECA: A BOLD VENTURE INTO COMMERCIAL DESIGN

Jennifer shares how she landed her first commercial project, Enoteca, a notable restaurant in Sun Valley. This project was a significant milestone in her career, marking her entry into the commercial design sector. Commercial projects are relatively rare in our small mountain town, but Jennifer’s unique opportunity arose when she bumped into Scott Mason, the restaurant owner, in the hallway outside her office. Their chance encounter led to a conversation about the restaurant, and Jennifer mentioned that Scott would need a designer. To her delight, he expressed interest in hiring her, even though he had never worked with a designer before. Designing a new restaurant with established restauranteurs in the same building as her studio was exciting. Jennifer says, “When I landed my first commercial project, Enoteca, it was a game-changer. I had just two months to design and complete the project in time for the Christmas season, and we did it.” Jennifer and her team accepted the challenge with enthusiasm, and their experience at the High Point Market, a pre-planned trip, became instrumental in sourcing the necessary materials and furnishings for the restaurant. With a clear vision from the client and a focused team effort, they successfully completed Enoteca in time for its grand opening. THE TRANSITION TO SUEDE DESIGN

“In August 2023, I made the pivotal decision to rebrand the firm as ‘Suede Studio.’ It was about giving our team more recognition and transitioning from a brand tied to my name to a brand with greater autonomy,” Jennifer says. “I was inspired by the natural material of suede, its connection to the West, its strength, beauty, and the unique quality that always changes appearance with the touch.”

With offices in Ketchum, Idaho, and Bozeman, Montana, the brand has the ability to move forward with more of a collective approach that will be a pivotal piece of its growth. svpn-mag.com

UPCOMING PROJECTS AND A PERSONAL TOUCH

“I’m excited about all of them! One notable project is a multi-structure property in Jackson. It’s comprised of a house, guest house, and spa barn with a very minimalistic and unique vibe,” Jennifer says. “What I love most is working with repeat clients—it’s the ultimate. We currently have three projects for repeat clients: a White Clouds showpiece, a modern family home in Greenhorn, and a chic residence at the Wasatch Peak Ranch private club in Utah. Finally, our Moonlight Basin residence in Montana is especially exciting because of the client and design team interface. We push each other to new levels.” IN JENNIFER’S OWN WORDS

“As a designer, I’m casual first and foremost, but I love quality, so I have a billion cashmere sweaters because it’s cold here, but I love the feeling of it. Quality, casual, maybe a little edgy,” she says. “I curated a design-themed playlist for a project. Fergie’s ‘Glamorous’ adds a touch of glamour and excitement, Beyoncé’s ‘Flawless’ aligns with my assertive approach, and Ja Rule’s ‘Always on Time’ captures punctuality and efficiency.” Jennifer’s personal style, design edge, and playlist choices provide a unique and playful insight into her personality and how she brings her creativity and energy to her projects. Her words resonate with the passion, determination, and style that have defined her journey from Jennifer Hoey Interior Design to the remarkable brand that is Suede Studio. 

AQUA BLISS How swimming prolongs life and enhances longevity by Emily Williams

Swimming is considered a low-impact, highly effective cardiovascular workout, but does it stand apart from other sports as we age? Aquatic activities such as swimming, water aerobics, and aquatic therapy have emerged as catalysts for improved vitality and longevity. From improved mental health to a strong sense of community, the benefits of aquatic activities for well-being are evident among aging athletes here in the Wood River Valley. svpn-mag.com

157

WELLNESS | ZENERGY

At 90 years old, retired surgeon Fred Bieker rejoices, “Swimming is a life-saver—I can swim a mile faster than I can walk it!” Fred swims one mile three days a week in Zenergy’s state-of-the-art 25-yard saltwater pool. Unlike many land-based exercises that can be hard on joints, swimming provides resistance without impact, promoting muscle development without risking injury. As we age, maintaining muscle mass becomes increasingly essential for overall health and longevity. Swimming helps combat age-related muscle loss, enhancing mobility and reducing the risk of falls and fractures. By allowing us to continue to engage in physical activity, even while injured or experiencing joint pain, swimming helps us pursue a healthy and active lifestyle at the core of longevity. Aquatic exercise enhances flexibility and helps to improve joint mobility by moving the body through a wide range of motion. Sixty-five-year-old John Gove, a local powerhouse athlete, found solace in the pool’s embrace after a broken shoulder in 2018. John says, “The range of motion on my left shoulder was down about 40 degrees, and my physical therapist recommended that I try swimming to gain some of that back.” After making a full recovery, John established lap swimming as a staple in his workout regimen. “Now, I swim approximately 300 miles a year.” “The buoyancy of water provides support to limbs and joints, allowing them to engage fully more easily,” explains Zenergy Aquatic Therapist Maria Beattie. “You can always get in the water, even when weight bearing is not an option. From helping recover after injury to promoting lifelong flexibility and joint health, the pool is a powerful tool for rehabilitation and injury prevention.” As a longtime swimmer, 72-year-old Linda Clemens transitioned from lap swimming to Zenergy’s Hydrofit classes after a hip replacement and hasn’t looked back. “I’ve been doing Hydrofit for the last four years, and the energy of the class and the cardio workout that I get has been wonderful,” says Linda. “The outdoor pool at Zenergy is my piece of heaven.” Hydrofit instructors use buoyancy and resistance equipment to deliver an enhanced core body workout in the pool. As the premier outdoor pool in the Valley, the Zenergy pool is renowned for providing swimmers with unparalleled views of Bald Mountain. 158

“From helping recover after injury to promoting lifelong flexibility and joint health, the pool is a powerful tool for rehabilitation and injury prevention.” —Maria Beattie

Beyond the stunning setting, participating in aquatics often occurs in group settings, engendering a sense of community and inclusion. Former professional ballet dancer and equestrian Nadine McWilliams shares, “I had everything taken away, but then I found Hydrofit—so I’m not feeling too terribly deprived.” Nadine faced a rare cancer diagnosis that forced her to give up some of her favorite activities. Social engagement is crucial for mental well-being, and the sense of community with group aquatic activities can help combat feelings of isolation or loneliness. Eighty-four-year-old marathon swimming hall of famer Harry Huffaker affirms, “You stretch out, burn calories, the endorphins kick in, and you get a good attitude about almost everything.” The decorated swimmer’s words underscore the transformative power of swimming on body and mind. “Being able to swim in the outdoor pool year-round fills my spirit and makes me want to go on!” exclaims 78-year-old Jeannie Koleno, who participates in outdoor pool-based Hydrofit whether the sun is shining or the snow is flying. Exercise has been proven to reduce levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that are the body’s natural painkillers and mood elevators. Daily Zenergy lap swimmer Katherine O’Malley reflects, “My mind has always craved peace and quiet, and going back and forth in the water is how I find it.” Swimming can have a calming, meditative effect, creating space for reflection and mental clarity. For these swimmers and many more, the pool provides more than just a fitness destination. It nurtures mental resilience and develops lasting social connections. Swimming is a powerful tool that can enhance your lifespan and the quality of your years.  zenergysv.com

INVESTING IN COMMUNITY HEALTH St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation grants help patients enjoy healthier lives By Joy Prudek and St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation

“Healthcare extends far beyond the walls of the hospital and clinics,” says St. Luke’s Wood River (SLWR) hospitalist Katie Schneider, MD. “Investments in the work of our community health partners play a critical role in wellness and prevention. I am most grateful to the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation for funding community health initiatives, which help patients live healthier lives.” Every year, the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation (SLWRF) awards community grant funds to local, nonprofit organizations providing programs and services aimed at improving the health and well-being of the Wood River Valley community. These grants are given to locally based nonprofit organizations working to address the community’s most significant health needs. “We are grateful to the Foundation for helping to partner with us and address the community’s greatest health needs,” says Sarah Seppa, the manager of SLWR’s Center for Community Health and the SLWR’s director of community engagement. These health needs are identified in the St. Luke’s Wood River Community Health Needs Assessment, which is driven by demographic data and community feedback. The top health priorities

for Blaine County include access to health-related services, which include language and cultural barriers, mental well-being (including suicide and substance abuse), and high cost of living (including housing, caregiving, and early learning). Megan Tanous, Chief Development Officer for SLWRF, explains, “Our donors entrust the SLWR Foundation to understand and support the programs and services that address vital health needs.” She adds, “This is a profoundly impactful investment and illustrates the important role of philanthropy in the Wood River Valley.” This year, organizations receiving grant awards total nearly $250,000, including funds to support Family Health Services, College of Southern Idaho, Hospice and Palliative Care of the Wood River Valley, The Advocates, Blaine County Education Foundation, Blaine County Recreation District, Flourish Foundation, The Hunger Coalition, Men’s Second Chance Living, The Senior Connection, and The Wood River Community YMCA. These organizations offer services and programs that address the needs of young and old alike. Some provide members of our community with basic, fundamental needs such as safe and stable housing, enough food to eat, and access to medical and dental care. Equally important are programs that help individuals thrive by teaching ways to increase physical and emotional wellness, such as nutritional programs, educational and social learning, and sports and exercise. “Our community partners help us in our aim to meet people where they are, improving their overall health, leading to better outcomes, and lowering the overall cost of care. It is heartwarming to see the impact generosity can have on the lives of our fellow neighbors,” states Tanous. The mission of St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation is to accelerate the advancement of innovative programs and services that fundamentally improve healthcare experiences in the community. One hundred percent of every contribution to the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation remains in the community.  162

The Advocates’ Safe Housing

ST. LUKE’S WOOD RIVER FOUNDATION GRANT RECIPIENTS THE ADVOCATES’ SAFE HOUSING FIRST PROGRAM St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation invested in the Safe Housing First program, which supports domestic abuse survivors’ efforts to obtain or retain stable housing as quickly as possible. Research shows that housing stability increases safety and reduces depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, school absences, and emotional or peer problems for children. In addition, women experience improvements in general health and quality of life.

BLAINE COUNTY RECREATION DISTRICT (BCRD) BCRD provides healthy, active, and diverse youth programming throughout the year to ensure children in the community learn healthy habits and teamwork, build their skills, and, most importantly, have fun. St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation granted funds to the BCRD Youth Program Scholarships to ensure everyone can access their programs.

FAMILY HEALTH SERVICES To further increase access to care, the Foundation gave $1 million to help bring Family Health Services, a federally qualified health center and nonprofit, to Bellevue. The clinic opened in 2022 and provides medical and dental care and pharmacy services to those without insurance or who are underinsured.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN IDAHO In an effort to invest in the healthcare workforce, Foundation funds provide scholarships to Blaine County students seeking healthcare degrees and certificates.

HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE OF THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY This year’s funds help Hospice to provide end-of-life care and bereavement services, as well as support and education for patients, families, and caregivers.

THE SENIOR CONNECTION VISION AND HEARING CENTER

Support from the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation funds the School Meal Support Program, which provides school meals for Blaine County students.

Many seniors risk losing vision due to the difficulty of getting diagnosed and treated for eye disease, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma. These three diseases are the most common causes of permanent vision loss in our county and are often treatable if caught early. Additionally, many older adults lose their hearing due to normal aging. The Senior Connection has established a Vision and Hearing Center to provide these services locally to seniors in Blaine County. St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation’s investment in this program helps support the health of seniors and provides vision and hearing services to hundreds of people.

FLOURISH FOUNDATION As an investment in youth mental well-being, the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation supports the Mindful Awareness program to continue bringing first-rate social and emotional education grounded in mindfulness to K-12 students in the Wood River Valley.

MEN’S SECOND CHANCE LIVING The support of Men’s Second Chance Living helps address substance abuse and housing issues by helping men achieve sustained recovery from substance use disorders and successfully reenter society.

THE HUNGER COALITION Funds awarded from the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation will support meals in The Hunger Coalition’s Community kitchen, café, garden, and greenhouses and help to make possible a second meal in the evenings to provide a hot dinner to folks at the end of a long day. These efforts fund critical nutrition support and encourage relationship-building for families, seniors, and children.

WOOD RIVER COMMUNITY YMCA LONGEVITY PROGRAMS St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation’s investment in the Wood River Community YMCA longevity programs helps seniors, cancer survivors, people with Parkinson’s disease, and caregivers access specialized exercise programs.

FLOURISH FOUNDATION Tending the garden of the heart

by Lori Williams

164

svpn-mag.com

WELLNESS

Since its inception in 2009, the Flourish Foundation has thrived in the Wood River Valley with a focus on cultivating and nurturing the human potential for leading a wise, moral, and compassionate life at any age. Since their beginning, they have seen what tending this potential, individually and collectively, produces—the self-empowerment to naturally care for ourselves, each other, and the planet. To this end, Flourish has facilitated programs that transform individuals through ethics and values, meditation, and experiential inquiry.

“We are merely enabling people to bring out their inner resources—the inherent capacity for caring, wisdom, knowledge, and insight.” —Ryan Redman

Executive Director Ryan Redman and his wife, Paige Redman, say the seed for Flourish was first planted in his mind during college while studying environmental science, traveling abroad, and in India exploring contemplative practices. The convergence occurred when he listened to a lecture by his professor, one who would eventually become his mentor. Says Ryan, “Dr. Alan Wallace told us that unless we overcome the dissatisfaction from false self-identification, we will seek happiness outside of ourselves, and unless we overcome seeking happiness outside of ourselves, we will recklessly deplete our natural resources and fall into mindsets of hatred and hostility, competing for what is finite. So, to achieve true sustainability, we must cultivate our inner resources and begin our activism from the inside out.” svpn-mag.com

165

Ryan’s conviction from an insider’s approach to systems change deepened after reading a paper by renowned ecologist Donella Meadows, who argued that shifting our worldview is the most profound leverage point for catalyzing change. He contemplated what to do to make a lasting impact and difference. So, while this inside/out approach was born, the seed lay dormant as he traveled back and forth to India, deepening his personal practice and understanding of various contemplative traditions. Eventually, he and Paige began creating a life and raising a family in Hailey, where Ryan began teaching meditation to adults. Then, two points of germination occurred: one in 2005 when the Dali Llama visited the Wood River Valley, advocating for the secular education of the heart to children and adults. The other came when parents of Ryan’s adult meditation classes began asking if he could teach their children. Ryan sought support from the neuroscientific and cognitive psychology community with research on the benefits of teaching contemplative practices to children. With interest from the administration at Bellevue Elementary, a door was opened in 2010 for the first class of the Mindful Awareness Program. “From there, we never looked back,” says Ryan. “It spread like wildfire. Teachers, students, and administrations got excited.” “The Mindful Awareness Program is a 25-week program implemented during the school day and specific for each grade, K-12,” says Paige, who is the Operations and Educational Programs Coordinator. “We are now in every 166

school in the Valley and expanding. Students spend a half-hour with Flourish facilitators once a week, from October to May.” The emphasis of the K-5 program is cultivating a worldview of interdependence and a noninjurious way of life, introducing a language of emotions and basic practices for training attention, self-soothing, and kindness. The 6-12th grade program includes an in-depth exploration of ethics and values, self-inquiry, and the development of compassion, joy, and altruism. Additionally, Flourish also has programs in the Teton School District and internationally with a group of teachers and students in South Africa. Ryan says the teachers maintain that the Mindful Awareness Program is one of the most valuable things students can learn—the importance of managing emotions, working through adversity, and connecting with others meaningfully. “Some students immediately assimilate the ideas, some curiously explore just within the classroom environment, while others have an overwhelming inner landscape that takes time for a response,” says Ryan. “The seeds germinate at different times, but the consensus longitudinally is that many students return after high school, college, and well into their adult lives to tell us that their time with Flourish is what has enabled them to not just survive in life, but thrive. This is not just a temporary intervention during their school years. It’s a shift in their worldview, level of engagement, decision-making, values, and how they choose to strengthen individually for the rest

of their lives. We are merely enabling people to bring out their inner resources—the inherent capacity for caring, for wisdom, knowledge, and insight.” High school juniors and seniors can also apply to the extracurricular Compassionate Leaders Program, a curriculum that supports an intentional youth community committed to empowering themselves to serve others and make the world a better place. These students experience international immersion trips to collaborate with other communities around the world. “So far, we have worked with communities in India, Mexico, Morocco, and the Philippines,” says Ryan. “On these trips, students forge deeper relationships and support local projects that promote sustainability, education, and well-being.” Flourish also offers adult enrichment classes such as yoga and meditation, evening conversations for thoughtful and intentional connections, and a Teacher Rest and Renewal Program. For the last eight years, Paige has taught a five-week Mindfulness-Based Childbirth and Parenting program, giving parents an opportunity to learn mindfulness skills and tools while the child is in the womb. Other popular programs at Flourish include their Half-Day Urban Retreats, a full morning of intentional and community practice for adults. “The retreat is an opportunity for people to gain a deeper insight into their hearts and minds, not necessarily obtained in a daily practice,” says Paige.  flourishfoundation.org svpn-mag.com

“We love our music, but ultimately, it is about making a connection with our fans and connecting with the people in the audience.” —Brian Lancaster

by Aurora Wilkinson

The Argyros Performing Arts Center, in collaboration with RJK Entertainment, is gearing up to host a musical extravaganza that will set Ketchum ablaze with the arrival of LANCO, the dynamic country music band renowned for their electrifying performances and chart-topping hits. Scheduled for a two-day concert event on December 29 and 30, LANCO’s arrival promises to be a highlight of the holiday season, offering a one-of-a-kind musical experience for fans and attendees. The band derived its name from the last name of its lead singer, Brandon Lancaster, who is the sole or co-writer of all their songs. He will be joined by the rest of his exceptionally talented band, Tripp Howell (drummer), Chandler Baldwin (bass), and Jared Hampton (keyboard). LANCO’s unique modern country sound has gained the band immense success since its debut in 2016. Their number-one-selling debut album, Hallelujah Nights, gave the audience popular, charttopping songs such as “Greatest Love Story” and “Born to Love You.” LANCO’s journey extends beyond the boundaries of conventional country music. Lancaster’s introspective songwriting, coupled with the band’s versatile instrumentation, has allowed them to navigate the everexpanding landscape of the genre. The departure from their former label and the release of “Run, Run, Baby” signify a new musical chapter and a bold step into artistic freedom.

Lead vocalist Brandon Lancaster says, “In our time as a band, we have watched the genre expand to where there aren’t rules anymore. We can put our feelings into song as long as we feel authentic and honest.” This sentiment sets the stage for a performance transcending genre limitations, promising an experience that resonates with fans across diverse musical preferences. Their constant evolution, authenticity, and magnetic performances have solidified their position as a crowd favorite. Their performance at the Sun Valley Pavilion in 2021 showcased their unique ability to delight the audience with modern country sounds. Audience members can anticipate a performance that encapsulates the band’s growth, resilience, and unwavering commitment to their craft. LANCO’s willingness to push boundaries and explore new musical territories ensures that each performance is a unique and unrepeatable experience. “We [LANCO] have had a lot of evolution and growth personally and musically…” says lead vocalist Brandon Lancaster. “Music should reflect our lives, and as life has gotten, at times, more complicated or complex, I’ve found we can better express ourselves musically.” 170

LANCO’s new music touches on the changes the band has experienced in their personal lives. However, the ability to share their music with new and old fans truly brings joy into Lancaster’s life. “Seconds after we finish writing a song, we imagine how it would sound live… We love our music, but ultimately, it is about making a connection with our fans and connecting with the people in the audience,” he says. “That connection is a truly magical moment that is special and unique to music and musicians… It is moments like [live shows] that bring our music to life.” Join LANCO and opening acts The Pisten Bullys (29th) and Aaron Golay & the Original Sin (30th) at the Argyros Performing Arts Center. THE STILL LIFE OF SARAH BIRD Capturing time in Tiny Fruits by Beth Rush

Painter Sarah Bird explores the immediacy of nature through explorative still-lifes that span her time in Idaho and Oregon. In her solo exhibition, Tiny Fruits, at Hemmings Gallery Bird navigates the viewer through the seasons in each of her quietly powerful still-lifes. Bird’s studio in Hailey is warm and inviting; it smells of oils and fruits with plants and branches present throughout. The studio is a personal space for any artist, for Bird it is where she composes her skillful and thoughtful paintings. Her works in various stages of completion reveal a painter who has an innate sensibility of composition, real and imagined. In her control over paint and composition, Bird approaches realist painting with an abstract sensibility. Her subjects are captured from life and are often fleetingly alive. Untitled, Tiny Fruits 25 Oil on linen on panel, framed 16” x 20”

What is a still-life? It is life held still, dead nature (Nature Morte). It is a small token of a good harvest; it is the opulent, and the mundane rendered in paint. A still life is also a complete creation by the artist. This is evident in Bird’s work. She is controlling the narrative and how we see the quotidian. There is a love of material and medium evident in each painting in Tiny Fruits. Trained as a realist, Bird has the technique of 19th-century oil painters. With this skill, she is able to render texture to her flat surfaces and paint through her arrangements. A napkin is spread on a roughly hewn table, topped with plums, berries, and dried seed pods, and slyly, a Bonne Maman jar reveals that this is a contemporary painting. Even in her most traditional paintings, we are still given a sense of the now. Like her predecessors, Bird paints with an understanding that a fruit’s ripeness will fade, that a plant will wilt and that everything shifts. Bird’s comprehension of the passage of time is plotted out in her rendering of each piece in Tiny Fruits. The paintings use muted tones that demonstrate an artful understanding of the shifts in season while weaving in the personal and intimate.

Bird’s plants are not the lush and sumptuous flowers that have often filled 19th-century Dutch canvases. While they are not flamboyant, they are plants that we see every day on walks throughout Idaho, with a beauty that we may overlook. Bird’s contemporary sensibilities allow her to build on our understanding of the still-life as art. The flora, when floating, are painted with an understanding reminiscent of the 17th-century botanist and illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian. Above the horizon line, Magritte-like Bird directs us to focus on the subdued beauty of “trailside weeds, backyard, and feral fruits.” Sarah Bird’s work in Tiny Fruits is personal and abstract, real and surreal, familiar and strange. They are a culmination of experience, wholly created in her studio; they bring nature indoors and forgotten or used objects into a weedy backdrop. Landscape and untamed wilderness are met with careful curation of forgotten, chipped, used vases and vessels. Bird skillfully evokes the past while looking at the present.  HEMMINGS GALLERY 340 Walnut Avenue | Ketchum 208.254.1097 hemmingsgallery.com svpn-mag.com

Kneeland Gallery Robert Moore, Steven Lee Adams, and Shanna Kunz Artists’ Reception Friday, December 29, 5-7:30pm

Renowned Plein Air painter Robert Moore serves as an inspiration and mentor to many accomplished painters. His technique involves applying a multitude of oil hues onto his canvas then working a palette knife with both hands until his composition emerges from the apparent chaos of texture and color. The process is all the more extraordinary, given the fact that Moore suffers from partial color blindness. A longtime favorite of our clients, Steven Adams strives in his work to portray the elusive feeling of timelessness beneath objects that might otherwise seem commonplace. Preferring to paint a broken

Utah artist Shanna Kunz offers different interpretations of the landscape of her area through the use of a warm palette and the play of mood, light, and color. Deck the Walls Each December and January, Gilman Contemporary celebrates the diversity of the artists they bring to Sun Valley with their group exhibition, Deck the Walls. This dynamic group exhibition teases upcoming feature exhibitions with works by Joanne Freeman, John Westmark, and Matt Duffin and introduces new artists to the gallery, Tony Hernandez and Jason Wheatley. The gallery will also feature one of Jill Lear’s newest large-scale works on paper mounted to wood panels alongside new mixed-media paintings by Thai Mainhard. The gallery is pleased to present Tony Hernandez, whose work is whimsical and controversial. Born in 1964, Hernandez has been professionally painting for the last 35 years. Focusing on children, Hernandez highlights the powerlessness and imagination of those who have no choice. Working on handmade birch wood panels using the technically demanding process of encaustic painting, his works are simple visually but psychologically complex. The children in his work are caught floating alone on the panel, caught in a daydream. The viewer is pulled into this land of childlike curiosity and wonder with nothing to distract from the subject. Jason Wheatley is well known for his dreamscape paintings of animals, birds, and fish placed together fantastically. He has painted animals throughout his career and uses them as spirit guides to venture into the aethereal realms. Wheatley’s early influence was French realist Gustave Courbet. Photographer Michael Massaia brings us his new series, Beginnings. Focusing on Manhattan, Massaia starts on Wall Street and moves towards Midtown in the same way that New York began and developed. His haunting latenight/early-morning images, devoid of humans, evoke a sense of nostalgia in these modern spaces: documenting the present while remembering the past. Much of this film noir feel can be attributed to his mastery of the silver gelatin print. Massaia meticulously handprints his work, creating the cinematic scenes of some of New York’s most recognizable architecture. The gallery will also present new works by Thai Mainhard, Kelly Ording, Paul Béliveau, Ellie Davies, and Matt Duffin. Radio City By Michael Massaia Split-toned silver gelatin print Various sizes

inspired by Courbet, there is nothing derivative about the work of this 21st-century fantasy realist. He brings his own contemporary blend of tension, intrigue, humor, and beauty to his still-life canvases. By juxtaposing odd objects that wouldn’t normally be grouped together, Wheatley succeeds in getting the viewer to suspend disbelief. Joanne Freeman creates reductive abstract paintings that are about the beauty of singular color, the impact of pure abstract forms, and the quiet order that cuts through the noise. “As an abstract painter, my studio practice does not rely on direct observation but rather process and precedence.” By layering color onto treated raw linen or paper, Freeman’s work recalls qualities of mid-century low-tech graphics, color field painting, and collage. Each medium has its inherent qualities examined and accentuated as the pigment is scraped onto canvas. svpn-mag.com

OCHI Cooper Cox Out Here Artist’s Reception Thursday, December 28, 4-7pm

OCHI presents Out Here, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Brooklyn-based artist Cooper Cox. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. From a young age, Cooper Cox harbored a fascination with trees, often sketching them in the margins of his schoolbooks. Allured by their elegant forms and endurance, as well as by their symbiotic relationships with neighboring organisms, Cox’s newest paintings feature snags— large, coniferous, upright trees that appear lifeless but serve as essential habitats for wildlife long after losing their leaves and flowers. Like the first line in a charcoal drawing, snags appear exposed, revealing the history of their growth as slow, incremental adjustments rather than sudden change. Snags symbolize strength and adaptability—having survived shifting climates and human interventions, Cox’s snags can occasionally bloom soulful blossoms that reflect senescence’s emotional and physical changes. In proximity to dramatic landscapes like the Sawtooth Range and Craters of the Moon, the spruce-fir forests of Sun Valley, Idaho, are replete with dense greenery and wildfire-scarred hillsides that bear snags and regrowth. 198

James Cook’s thickly painted oils are an epic and expressive vision of the Sawtooths and surrounding mountain ranges, rushing rivers, and babbling brooks of the American West. Michael Gregory’s iconic paintings of barns and homesteads reflect on the beauty of isolation found in the Western American landscape. Bodies of Work: Art & Healing, a group exhibition that features artwork by contemporary artists who have used their artistic practice as a way of exploring and processing their own experience of medical illness and the experiences of others. Through the art of contemporary artists Katherine Shaughnessy, Heather Watkins, Dylan Mortimer, Estelle L. Roberge, Katherine Sherwood, and Renée Stout, Bodies of Work takes viewers on a journey of healing through art. The arts have long served as powerful medicine for both mind and body. At the beginning of the 20th century, tuberculosis patients at sanatoria often participated in structured arts and crafts programs. Wounded soldiers recuperating during World War II were taught “lap crafts,” such as beading and embroidery, as part of their medical therapy. And many artists have made their practices an essential part of their personal healing. 202

Untitled, Tiny Fruits 19 Oil on linen on panel, framed 20” x 24”

Hemmings Gallery Sarah Bird Tiny Fruits Artist’s Reception Friday, December 29, 5-7:30pm

Sarah Bird is an Idaho- and Oregon-based realist oil painter. She draws on nineteenth-century techniques and 17th-century imaginative Flemish perspectives to weave still life and landscape into intimate tabletop worlds that sometimes tip into the surreal. Historically, still life paintings honored material wealth and colonialism—for example, elaborate feasts featuring exotic fare and rare China, crystals, and silks—but Bird’s paintings instead recenter the natural, local, and marginal: trailside weeds, backyard, and feral fruits, found and thrift-store objects. Though done in the studio, her paintings also intentionally evoke and symbolize landscapes, arguing that our experiences of a place are perhaps of greater value than our material 204

obsessions. In her arrangements, individually and taken together, one can also see the passing of the seasons, and a loose calendar of a year, of a life, emerges. These pieces are the “tiny fruits” of seasonal pleasures and of painting. Bird paints only with a very small, size zero round brush, which makes the process similar to egg tempura painting or needlework: the whole surface is carefully and heavily touched. Though painted from life rather than photos, the elements are never all together as they appear in the finished paintings. Flowers wilt and are replaced, dishes and stones move around as if of their own volition. The paintings are collaged realities, each actively composed and edited over time, an ongoing improvisation in the way of abstract painting. Small touches of the surreal also call attention to the artifice of arrangement and, most importantly, assert the abiding importance of the imagination in how we frame the world. 340 Walnut Avenue | Ketchum 208.254.1097 hemmingsgallery.com

Sun Valley Contemporary Gallery Grand Opening The Sun Valley Contemporary Gallery is excited to welcome the Sun Valley community for Gallery Walk on Friday, December 29, and invite art collectors, aficionados, and all community members to peruse our dynamic roster of artists, who are established and mid-career, encompassing a diversity of styles and mediums reflecting the vibrant tapestry of the contemporary art landscape. The gallery and its founders have over 50 years of working experience in the arts, and the collection for the gallery’s grand opening has been assembled by a staff of experienced fine art professionals who understand and respect the mission of Sun Valley Contemporary Gallery. This special occasion includes works by multidisciplinary artist Jane Waterous with art from her most recent Gatherings series. “‘Everything that matters in life happens when we gather’ is the motto I live by,” says Waterous. “My art is all about human connection and the moments when, together, we love, laugh, and live our lives to the fullest. My Gatherings collection is inspired by our daily interactions and the celebration of life. From the spontaneous delight of children uniting in play to the joy at the arrival gate as family and friends reunite. Whether spontaneous or planned, everyday or celebratory, the need and desire for human connection is all around us. I have created pieces for Sun Valley Contemporary Gallery that reflect LOVE, JOY, and PEACE as these are the common threads in LIFE that bind us.” 320 1st Avenue North | Ketchum 208.450.2247 sunvalleyart.com 206

PIONEER SALOON Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

DINING GUIDE

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more. In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 18 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this fall and winter include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, mesquite rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, fresh steelhead salmon, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, vegan and gluten-free sesame noodle bowl, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, roasted free-range chicken, fresh steamer clams, seared ahi salad, awesome burgers and sandwiches, to name just a few.

DAILY BAR: 4:30PM DINING ROOM: 5PM 231 N Main St Ketchum 208.726.5233 sawtoothclub.com

All of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood. An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and autumn evenings around the large central fireplace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

Top to bottom: Holiday cheer; mesquite-grilled Idaho ruby red trout; selections from our bar; the Sawtooths in fall, our namesake mountain range.

MICHEL’S CHRISTIANIA Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s

Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.
