By Larry Blustein firstname.lastname@example.org If you travel most anywhere in south Florida, the one thing that is missing from the landscape of many of these communities. Unfortunately, it's something we have all gotten used to. Remember those abandoned buildings that would sit there for months - and in some cases - years - that became such an eyesore for many who passed by each day? 1st Priority From Pge 1A ––––––––––––––––––––– can spread to big damage, it's 1st Priority's job to eliminate it. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours. IT'S BETTER TO HIRE 1ST PRIORITY It doesn’t take much time for a water leak to do extensive damage to your home or business. In fact, it can happen just hours after the leak occurs. 1st Priority a licensed building contractor for mold remediation and mold assessment has 10 years experience in the industry. They can use that experience to find the leak and fix it quickly, using the latest. state-of-the-art technology. Its noninvasive, infrared thermal imaging equipment can detect the precise location of the leak within a wall or up to 12 feet underground, greatly minimizing the area of wall or floor that needs to be removed. When the leak is fixed, technicians will fully restore the area to its original condition using all new materials. To save the home and business owner time and money, 1st Priority will work directly with your insurance company. Its professional staff will identify and assess both visible and hidden damage, submit all bills, and take care of any negotiations. There is no outof-pocket cost for the home or business owner. This helps you to avoid headaches now as well as in the future. The insurance company adjuster wants the best outcome for the insurance company, and may not actively seek out unseen damage that is behind walls or under floors. 1st Priority, however, advocates for
the homeowner, and its technicians will use their skills and experience to identify even the hidden damage that may cause problems in the future if it is not fixed. HOW DO LEAKS HAPPEN? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to sleep for the night. When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, don’t wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem. IS MOLD MAKING YOUR HOME TOXIC? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. WHAT IS MOLD? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known allergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is
vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one. GOODBYE, MOLD Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, because injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such as drywall must be treated or replaced. Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition with new materials. OZONE TREATMENT If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards, 1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality. 1st PRIORITY RESTORATION: They Will Take care of The Problem From A to Z 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, sanitize it and restore the area to its original condition, all while working directly with your insurance company. The company provides start-to-finish, 24-hour service 365 days a year for repairing water, fire and smoke or wind damage, leak detection and repair, and ozone treatment. Technicians follow through with debris clean-up, manipulation and packing, storage, cleaning and sanitizing, using the latest technology to restore your property and belongings to its pre-loss condition. To save you time, 1st Priority can work directly with your insurance company. 1st Priority Restoration provides the fast action and thorough service that are the most important factors

Upcoming events will shine spotlight on the city By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - Hallandale Beach has a unique charm as a mid-size city in the heart of South Florida. Putting it in perspective, Florida has over 410 cities and half of them are under 10,000 population. Our city is one of the older cities in Broward County with Dania being the oldest. At 38,000 full time residents, we are not big but yet we are not small. This gives us some great advantages. I have grown to understand that our balance as a city allows residents the ability to get to know neighbors and enjoy some traditional small town events. While the events may be smaller, they have an impact on the community and our residents. Three such events are on their way. I hope everyone comes out and enjoys them while supporting education, the fight to address a cure for cancer and learn how to make a more city more sustainable. The Kiwanis Pasta Dinner is planned for March 28th at our Community Cultural Center starting at 6 p.m. For only 10 dollars, you can have a pasta dinner while helping to support our Kiwanis Club and our local schools. On Friday April 11th, the City will be hosting the Annual “Relay for Life” at Bluesten Park. This community wide event will give everyone
the chance to come together to support and celebrate survivors remember their loved one’s, support research and the unique needs of those that are fighting the battle against cancer. Teams have been signing up for an evening of fun at the park and we hope everyone stops by to support the cause. On Saturday April 12th, the City in partnership with the Hallandale Beach Area Chamber will be hosting the Annual “Green Fest” at City Hall starting at 11 a.m. Once again, we will be giving away free trees to our residents hosting GART: Garbage to Art Competition and welcoming a Farmers Market. I hope you come out and enjoy all these events. Get to know your neighbors and help become part of our great community. If you are a local business, we welcome your participation. For more information, you can contact our award winning parks department at: (954) 457-1409. Or visit the city’s web-site at: www.cohb.org. Or give me a call and I will point you in the right direction. While Hallandale remains the urban city with the big heart, our demographics have changed over the past years. We are a much younger community. The average age is now around 45. When I first
moved here, it was near 70. With this change comes a great demand on our schools and our parks. These two issues are something that I have and will remain focused on. Last week I had the chance to attend the USCM’s forum on education. I currently serve on the Educational Task Force. Some mayors have control over their school districts. The vast majority do not. This does not mean mayors and elected officials cannot be strong advocates for education. I along with my colleagues know how important our voices are when it comes to our children. We have continued to advocate for all of our students. Many residents are not aware that our High School for the past two years has received an “A” grade under the leadership of Estella Eckhart and her teachers and support staff. This accomplishment did take a village and will continue to be dependent on continue efforts and partnerships with our city. The school is now a full STEM magnet. STEM stands for: Science Technology Engineering And Math. Currently, many of the students are graduating with certificates in ADOBE, Dreamweaver and other industry certifications that will help them be competitive in today’s world. They are also teaching code, the commuter language to
write programs and applications. Our Middle School has received a “C” which is not great news but middle schools are always tough. That is why we have been working with our Education Advisor Board and school board to create a k-8 campus by switching the location of Gulfstream Middle and Hallandale Adult. This grade does not represent what is taking place within the school's class rooms. Principal Kingsley has created the very first STEM lab. His leadership creativity and ability to leverage many partnerships has lead him to be recognized statewide as one of three finalists for Teacher of the Year. His STEM teacher was also recognized nationally. They too are teaching Code. Our Elementary School went from and A to B and now C. It was an A for many many years. The school has been a year round school FCAT testing A grades that have become somewhat of a guide but each year they continue to move to the finish line. Our schools are not as simple as a one size fits all. Now the schools are moving to Common Core. The meeting in Washington was a discussion on best practices and how mayors can partner with schools. Bill Gates was one of the hosts of the event and dedicated
much of his time to addressing education in our country and Common Core. He shared his believe that after 14 year of research, Common Core is one of the best solutions to addressing student performance and preparing them for world competition. The meeting also reinforced the fact that schools can no longer work in a vacuum. We all need to work collectively to support accountability and equity when it comes to education. Every child should have the same opportunity and access to succeed. The other demand we need to make sure we all address is our parks and open space. To have top notch park amenities for every one of all ages in every park, our city does come with a price tag. Our city commission together with the residents have developed a plan to just this. The price tag is $97 per $100,000 dollars of property value per year for 30 years. The city commission voted last month to have staff come forward to ballot language on the November ballot to decide if voters want to pay for the parks and make this price part of their tax bill. Recently a small group of 2 residents plus “others" have proposed what they believe is a solution to getting this done without a vote of the residents and with-
out using debt service. The solution was to have the parks be paid for with CRA dollars. While they thought this was a viable solution, it does not work for two main reasons; not all parks could be funded by the CRA as it could not bear the cost of $56 million debt. To do all the parks, the CRA would in essence, be solely used for parks and all other programs to help upgrade our blighted areas, promote economic development and creating jobs would be over. In addition, the balance of funds would still need to be borrowed to make sure every area would have completed parks within the 6 year time frame. The issue is not that complex it comes down to the willingness of the voters to decide; do you want to pay to make sure our parks a done at a price of $97 dollars per $100,000 per value per year for 30 years. If you have a taxable value of less than $100,000, it is less and if your value is more than that, then it would be more. The CRA board made it clear by a 3-2 vote that they are not willing to gut the CRA programs. down some of the areas that really brought these communities down." Perhaps no other area in south Florida is about to take off like Hollywood Blvd. and the 441 corridor that was home to many of these establishments that closed due to the lack of anything bringing in potential customers. Now, with Walmart's Superstore being developed and built on the once vibrant Hollywood Fashion Center, many area businesses and the new ones that will be constructed around the new shopping facility, will at least having something driving the traffic flow. "To me, as someone who has lived in this community for 44 years, having some kind of historic area like 441 would be the perfect way of developing it into something that would reflect the real Hollywood," David Martinez pointed out. "I
must have written a dozen letters to tell the powers here in Hollywood why this should be a historic area that we could all take pride in." HALLANDALE BEACH FILLS IN THE SPACES If you work, live or travel through Hallandale Beach, you probably have noticed that many of the vacant and struggling businesses and homes are no longer there. Instead, Hallandale Beach has been aggressive in helping to turn many off these properties over and help the enhance these once abandoned eye-sores. The CRA has a hand in trying to find buyers for many of these properties that have been cleared and are ready for purchase. "What has been going on here in Hallandale Beach is that we want to make this community as appealing as possible to live and work in," said
Commissioner Bill Julian. "With so many things that we have planned, there has never been a better time to be associated with this city." With the old city hall building remaining the only obstacle to what could be a historic part of the city - with the Curci House in place and plans for the Moffett Home to be renovated - things are certainly moving in a positive direction. Abandoned structures are hopefully a thing of the past, and as the CRA helps in the process, things look positive. "I noticed a few months ago how many of the older structures that have gone out of business, and have sat for any length of time, are actually being leveled," said Hallandale Beach resident Andy Simoneau. "That makes you think that something positive for the future is taking place."

7 Things You Must Know Before Putting Your Home Up For Sale SOUTH BROWARD A New report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today's market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don't
Most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable.
Spring into four simple DIY home decorating trends (BPT) - Whether you're personalizing a new home or revitalizing an old room, the start of spring is when newly imagined spaces become do-it-yourself realities. Here are four easy and affordable DIY tips to bring 2014's trends into your home. Don't just spring clean ... spring create Spring cleaning doesn't have to mean getting rid of everything in the garage. Familiar pieces showcased in a special way can be a conversation starter. Love cycling, but have an old bicycle that you don't ride anymore?- Consider using its components to construct a unique piece of furniture to showcase your passion for the sport. Peter Debelak, co-owner of Soulcraft Woodshop and Gallery, a membership-based community woodworking workshop in Cleveland, Ohio, did just that. He used Elmer's ProBond Advanced, a construction adhesive designed specifically for bonding porous to non-porous mixed materials, such as metal to wood or ceramic to drywall, to create a rotating wine rack made out of a bicycle wheel, as well as a shelf and coat rack constructed from a repurposed bicycle crank-set and handlebars. "More and more we're seeing people personalize their home decor by transforming fascinating objects they love into home accessories and furnishings," says Debelak. GO AHEAD, MIX MATERIALS Vintage and contemporary design elements come together to create rustic contemporary looks. "Reclaimed materials will heavily influence DIYers, and contrasting shiny and rustic materials in projects will definitely be trending in 2014," says KariAnne Wood, designer, blogger and owner of Thistlewood Farms. Metal, wood, glass, ceramic - all of these key materials play essential roles in making your home the center of attention. Mixing two, or even all, of these together will give you an edge in creating a unique space. Consider gluing pieces of metal and wood together to construct an industrial-style coffee table. Able to work on almost any substrate, ProBond Advanced's "opposites attract" formula delivers a heavy-duty bond between porous and non-porous surfaces. The glue doesn't leave a foam residue once it dries, so creating a masterpiece is as easy as glue, clamp and relax. GIVE PIECE(S) A CHANCE Recycled wooden pallets and cable spools are trending now on Pinterest in 2014, as DIYers turn them into coffee tables, desks and wall art. "Homeowners are finding ways to bring an element of surprise to staple pieces. Taking utilitarian items and helping them live a new, more beautiful life will enhance any space this season," says Wood. For a quick and simple patio transformation, spray paint large, wooden cable spools and use them as outdoor tables. Take it a step further by using ProBond Advanced to add a bold, ceramic tile mosaic without any grout, caulk or building required. ORGANIZE ORGANICALLY Most people kick spring off with a little time devoted to organizing. There are easy ways to make your current space functional for your lifestyle without sacrificing your design preferences. Don't let closet space get cluttered; rather, make use of a space you usually ignore. People are discovering new ways to make beautiful items more functional. That fabulous bench in your entryway may be storing winter coats in a secret storage space but your guests never need to know. Adding storage and improving organization can be just as creative as other spring decorating endeavors. Enhancing your storage solutions can include hanging an old door horizontally and attaching metal hooks to make an instant mudroom by your entryway. Wire baskets glued to wood shelves become a great home for keys, shoes, and outdoor accessories. No time to build anything? Not to worry. Simply hang a shoe rack on the back of a door, and you have a perfect set of compartments to hold supplies in any room. This season, stay on trend without busting your budget (or your back) by stepping outside of your comfort zone and embracing your most creative ideas. Whether you're upcycling old items found in the garage into new masterpieces, or giving a more modern pop to a traditional coffee table, this year's trends involve unique materials and bold design elements. The possibilities are endless, and it's important to have the right materials to complete every project quickly and correctly the first time.

Nick's Restaurant has returned better than ever • Record-breaking weekend gets Hallandale Beach landmark back in the spotlight
The Monday night Corned Beef and Cabbage St. Patrick's Day specials drew the biggest raves from customers, who felt that it was the best they've had.
Stephen Riemer held a pitcher of water in one hand - while welcoming yet another group of customers into one of Hallandale Beach's landmark restaurants that reopened this past Saturday at the entrance to Fashion Row. "We're back and better than ever," said Riemer as he raced to pour a cold beer from one of the many upgrades that welcomed diners - new and old this past weekend. "Nick's Restaurant is back and still serving up great food." While Riemer owns five businesses in Hallandale Beach, this is the first time he has been involved in the competitive world of restaurants - and in the first four days - he and his tremendous team of cooks and servers have exceeded expectations - for good reason. While Nick's has always been about great food, the many additions that have been made to this Hallandale Beach hotspot, making it a must see kind of place - and nobody has left disappointed. Additions to the already quality menu has been a huge plus as well. "The food is much better than it was before," said Arnie Cooper of Hallandale Beach, who has been eating at Nick's for decades. "The food is better, the service is tremendous and the atmosphere is really something special. I like this." From his famous Riemer Antique Toy Collection - to the addition of the frosty mugs and draft beer, Jersey Shore Super Hotdogs, Old Monmouth Peanut Brittle and Goshen Farms Vermont Maple Syrup, the changes are noticed by everyone who have been coming since 1962 when Nick Gianos started in Hollywood. They also have FREE WiFi to make that overall experience extra special. The food speaks for itself - with the same people who have made it such a success for generations - with the famous turkey, overstuffed sandwiches and
The famous Pasta with Special Bolognese Sauce is part of the many special dishes.

outstanding specials that are served up daily. "I cannot tell you how great it is to have Nick's back," said Commissioner and longtime resident Bill Julian. "When I came here on the official opening day on Saturday, you couldn't even get in the door - and to me - that signals that this landmark has indeed returned." As Riemer continued to work the dining room, pouring beers, opening bottles of wine, getting water and other beverages and helping out a wait staff that has been in place for over 25 years, he had plenty of assistance. His wife, Laurie, and former owner Lois Lovett-Gianos, were also extremely busy, helping make the initial visit back to Nick's one that will keep them coming back. While he has had so much success in his many other business ventures, especially in Hallandale Beach Riemer was ready for this challenge of getting this restaurant up and running and giving a spark to Schmatta Row, which really is in need of a makeover and new infusion of business. "The best things about reopening this landmark is that we have added to it with so many tremendous and positive changes - like
the products we offer that you can only get here at Nick's," Riemer pointed out. "So far the big winners here have been the peanut brittle, frosted, oversized mugs of draft beer and our hot dogs and relish trays that offer a Chicago or New Jerseystyle toppings." ST. PATRICK'S DAY WAS GREAT The true test of any restaurant are the people who come and dine there - as well as give you a visit on a big holiday. The Monday night Corned Beef and Cabbage St. Patrick's Day specials drew the biggest raves from customers, who felt that it was the best they've had. Locals such as real estate professional M.J. Mullarkey were totally impressed by the food. The portions, quality and overall presentation of the meal was well worth the trip. "So glad to have Nick's back among the businesses here in Hallandale Beach," Mullarkey explained. "The way to bring people back is to serve them great food and in an energetic atmosphere. The food was really outstanding." As mounds of corned beef, potatoes, cabbage and carrots rolled out, the special day brought
It was a huge weekend for Laurie and Stephen Riemer - at Nick’s Restaurant in Hallandale Beach.
with it the inclusion of a soup or salad and a choice of dessert. That was enough to attract Sofi Huerta of Hollywood who admitted that she was a little hesitant after a bad experience a few years back. But she ended up really enjoying the meal. "I will tell you right now, Nick's really serves up great food," she smiled. "You can tell your readers that they need to come here because it's good, friendly and we got the chance to see Lois and the girls for the first time in a long while." SPECIALS EVERY DAY From breakfast to a late night menu, there are up to 75 different items that you have to choose from, which include delicious sandwiches - hot and cold refreshing salads and outstanding entrees, but the daily specials steal the show. From Chicken A La King or Lamb Shank (MONDAY), to Homemade Beef Stew or Chicken Pot Pie (TUESDAY) and Baked Stuffed Pepper or the famous Pasta with Special Bolognese Sauce on Wednesday, this is a quality meal that comes with everything. As we can see from Monday's non-stop crowd, the Corned Beef Cabbage - or Beef Tips Over Noodles (THURSDAY) are popular. So are the Friday specials that feature a Brisket of Beef or Broiled Fish - Saturday's delicious Roasted Sirloin of Beef or the outstanding fresh off the bone turkey dinners that make Sunday very special. BREAKFAST IS STILL A SHOW If you really want to bring smiles to the faces of local diners, just mention the impressive breakfast they serve up daily. With the addition of the Goshen Farms Vermont Maple Syrup, waffles and pancakes have never tasted better. The many egg dishes and omelets are delicious and attract so many regulars as well as those who are looking for more than a place to eat.
Lois and her loyal girls have been familiar faces for over 25 years.
Great food comes out of the kitchen - and here are three reasons why!
"This is a restaurant, like we said before, that we want to be a destination," Riemer explained. "We want people to come here for our hot dogs, peanut brittle and the chance to shop on Schmatta Row. That is what we are looking to create."
At a time when customer service and that special touch have been missing from the restaurant landscape locally, Stephen and Laurie Riemer have come in with some great ideas and have already started to make many of them work!

Direct from Broadway the smash musical ‘American Idiot’ opens at Broward Center By Eleanor Hannan The musical, American Idiot is the story of three life long friends who are forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Based on Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album and featuring the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track, “American Idiot” boldly takes the American musical where it has been before. Set in the recent past, the musical opens on a group of suburban youths living unhappily in “Jingletown, USA” who concentrate fully on TV. The three young men involved are Johnny, Will and Tunny. Johnny and Tunny are able to escape a stifling suburban
lifestyle and parental restrictions, while Will stays home to workout his relationship with his pregnant girlfriend. The two former pair look for meaning in life and try out the freedom and excitement of the city. Tunny quickly gives up on life in the city, joins the military and is shipped off to war. Back in the city, Johnny reveals the depth of his love for a girl he sees in a window, he calls “Whatsername.” However, their many ups and downs, lack of control in their daily habits and circumstances beyond their control, lead to many changes in their lives until they realize there is still hope and their lives can change for the better. Their story mirrors that of the new generation of American youth who try to find meaning

THE INCOMPARABLE MUSICAL "MAN OF LA MANCHA" PRESENTED BY PEMBROKE PINES THEATRE OF THE PERFORMING ARTS: Man of La Mancha is a remarkable show and one of the great theatre successes of our time. It is a playwithin-a-play based on Cervantes' "Don Quixote." It is a very sharp story of a dying old man whose impossible dream takes over his mind. Songs like "It's All the Same," "Little Bird," "I'm Only Thinking of Him," " Do I Really Like Him," and of course "The Impossible Dream," remain in your thoughts and brain long after seeing the show. His dream becomes every man's dream and is every man's great adventure. The story takes place in the late 16th century when Miguel de Cervantes (a tax collector, soldier and author) and his assistant, Sancho, foreclose on a church
failing to pay its taxes. The two men are thrown into prison by the Spanish Inquisition. Pleading his case, Cervantes gives a very dramatic defense by re-enacting the story of Don Quixote of La Mancha, the passionate tale of a noble knight who lives in a world of madness and cannot see that chivalry has died. His holy quest is a mission of salvation to find compassion not only for himself, but for all mankind. The principal song, "The Impossible Dream," became a standard and is played in many countries throughout the world.
Tickets for the family night show are on March 22nd, 2014 at 8 p.m. and March 29th at 2 p.m. for the senior matinee show are $15 available at the theatre's box office located at Susan Katz Theatre of Grass Arts Park, 17195 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. The food is fabulous, the hospitality gracious, and the sparkling new decor conducive to intimate groups or spacious enough for large parties. Moving from 10 years on Hollywood Boulevard to a new and larger location at 1848 Harrison Street enables owner Tony Unal to spotlight his unique Mediterranean cuisine, well stocked bar, and fine wines in the manner that it deserves. The menu at Ala Turca is both exotic and cosmopolitan. Your Mediterranean experience can start with Turkish Mezes that wake your tastebuds, including your choice of Hummus, Roasted Eggplant Salad, Tabouli, Falafel, Stuffed Grape Leaves, Fried
Calamari and 25 other items. Follow that with a choice of fresh salad and delicious soups such as Red Lentil, a specialty of the house. Traditional dinner favorites at Ala Turca include Doner Kebab (ground lamb and beef on a vertical skewer and carved), Lamb Shish Kebab (my favorite), Lamb Shank, Chicken Shish, Adana Kebab (fresh ground lamb seasoned with traditional turkish spices), Pirzola (char-grilled lamb chop), Shrimp skewers, and specialties like Bronzini (a delightfully seasoned Mediterranean fish served whole). For those with a more conventional taste, Owner/chef Tony is happy to prepare deli-
cious Salmon, Filet Mignon, Ribeye steaks or pasta dishes Ala Turca. All main courses include lush choices of fresh steamed vegetables, roasted potato, rice pilaf and cacik. Even after eating heartily, you would be hard-pressed to leave without a piece of Baklava, Kunefe or Sakiz pudding that can be lavishly savored with a dessert wine, cocktail or a cup of amazing Turkish tea. All favorites are featured on the lunch menu that also includes Gyro, Falafel Burger, all the Shish Kebabs and a vast choice of salads. And, if you are looking for a special treat, every Friday night, Ala Turca features entertainment for your pleasure. West Side Story Actor Gets Lifesaving Second Opinion at Mount Sinai
David Winters and Mount Sinai chief of cardiac surgery, Dr. Joseph Lamelas.
David Winters (far left) performs a dance number as one of the original Jets in the movie West Side Story.
When the diagnosis is surgery, obtaining a second opinion is not only a good idea -- it could also be a lifesaving decision. David Winters, 74, discovered this after seeking a second opinion for cardiac surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center. The result: Doctors at Mount Sinai successfully treated him with a procedure that was far less complicated than the surgery that others said he would need. An acclaimed actor, producer, director and choreographer, Winters is one of the original cast members of both the Broadway and movie versions of West Side Story. He was working in Panama City, Florida, on a new movie when he began experiencing shortness of breath and fatigue. A previous diagnosis with atrial fibrillation - a condition characterized by an irregular beat -prompted him to seek a cardiologist immediately. After an evaluation, cardiac surgeons in Panama City recommended triple bypass cardiac surgery with up to two valve replacements. The surgeons planned to use a median sternotomy approach by making an incision down the breastbone and opening the chest cavity. “They told me that because of my age no one else would operate on me,” Winters said. “When I said I wanted to seek a second opinion, they discouraged me. It was questionable to me why any doctor would discourage you from getting a second opinion, which gave me all the more reason to seek one.” Winters sought a second opinion from Dr. Joseph Lamelas, chief of Cardiac Surgery at Mount Sinai. To Winters’ relief, Dr. Lamelas said he would not require the invasive procedure recommended in Panama City. Instead, he was a candidate for a far less complicated minimally invasive procedure that requires a five-inch incision on the side of the rib cage. With this approach, patients heal faster, have a shorter hospital stay and experience fewer post-surgery complications. In addition, Mount Sinai has the best cardiac surgery survival rate in Florida,* making Winters’ decision to seek a second opinion even more beneficial. “I see many patients who were told they needed the traditional sternotomy approach because the surgeon they initially saw may not have been experienced in using a minimally invasive technique in these complex cases,” said Dr. Lamelas, who performs the most valve surgeries in Florida. “Also at issue is that fact that many surgeons are reluctant to perform surgery on high-risk patients, such as the elderly, obese or those with chronic obtrusive pulmonary disorder (COPD). But a minimally invasive approach gives these patients a surgical option with fewer complications overall.” On January 21,Winters underwent a singular mitral valve replacement and received a pacemaker and left the hospital a mere six days later. As one of the Jets in West Side Story, Winters played A-Rab and had solo dance performances in the numbers “Cool” and “Officer Krumpky.” He has directed and produced more than 400 television series, specials and motion pictures. He also served as Elvis Presley’s lead choreographer in four films. “I’ve been a dancer all of my life, which means I was always active and moving around,” he said. “But, inevitably, time and family history catch up with you. My father died of a heart attack at 71.” Winters has returned to choreographing and dancing and looks forward to returning to work while continuing to shoot his movie in Miami.
Fibromyalgia: 'I don’t know – what’s wrong - I just hurt all over!' If you have fibromyalgia there is a good chance you have been told or starting to believe, that you are hypochondriac. This is because fibromyalgia is a syndrome that involves the presences of many different syndrome, which a battery of laboratory test will show you no cause for…but you know that physical and metal dysfunction are real! It is estimated that over 6 million people in North America have fibromyalgia. Most of them are women between the ages of 25 and 35. The female- to – male ratio for this disease is 5:1. While no two people with fibromyalgia will have the same combination of symptoms, they will all experience muscle pain and have “tender point” (specific spots where muscles are tender to touch). The muscle pain is described to be burning. Throbbing, shooting or stabbing, and the symptoms are usually worse in the morning. • Chronic – lasting over three month—wide – spread, muscular stiffness, fatigue and sleep disturbances, are the main complaints of fibromyalgia suffers. Other predominant symptoms are depression, tension, irritable bowel syndrome, tension and migraine headaches, chemical and / or food allergies, painful menstruation, MJ numbness in fingers and toes,, memory loss, and difficulty concentrating, dizziness and loss, and toes, memory loss, and difficulty concentrating, dizziness and loss of balance, and recurrent bladder urgency/infections. The symptoms of fibromyalgia are aggravated by physical, emotional or chemical stress, and sometime by bright light, loud noise, or strong smells. And they are often worse in extremely hot, cold, or humid weather. The cause or causes of fibromyalgia are not positively certain. It is thought if may be due to a disorder of the immune system, decreased levels of serotonin, dysfunctional mitochondria activity, the Epstein- Barr virus, mercury poisoning, parasites, candidiasis, hypothyroidism, and/or lack of exercise. In majority of cases, fi-

MALIC ACID: AN APPLE A DAY Malic acid is a naturally occurring, nontoxic, organic acid, which is widely distributed in the vegetable kingdom. It is an alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) that is vital in the body’s normal production of energy. Malic acid plays an essential role in sugar metabolism and in the formation of ATP (a key ingredient in energy production) Malic acid has also been shown to be instrumental in preventing hypoxia – a breakdown in the delivery of oxygen to muscle cells. It is because of this aiding in the oxygen delivery to muscle cells that acid has been tested as a treatment for fibromyalgia. In one study published in the Journal of
Nutritional Medicine, 15 fibromyalgia patients were given either 1200 or 2400 mg of malic acid daily along with 300 to 600 mg of magnesium, or a placebo, for a periods of 4-6 weeks. All the patients reported a marked decrease in pain within two days. When the women were switched to the placebo, their condition deteriorated within 48 hours. For all these reasons, this supplement is catching the attention of many athletes too, in hopes that it can improve their stamina and endurance. This wonder nutrient found in high concentrations in apples, also seem to help the liver to eliminate ammonia, which is very toxic to the brain. And there are no known contraindications to the use of malic acid as a supplement. *Have your spine checked for misalignments and imbalances. Hall of Fame jockeys have more than horses in common
From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Later that year, Donald and Kauai King also won the Preakness, taking two legs of the Triple Crown. When Donald started riding Kauai King for trainer Henry Forrest in 1965, he knew right away there was something unique about his mount. "I thought he was a special horse with a lot of ability," he recalls. Bred in Maryland, Kauai King had a history in South Florida well before his run in the Kentucky Derby. As a three-year-old, he was stabled at Hialeah, where he won easily. "I told a jockey friend, 'that's going to be my Derby horse,'" Donald remembers. Next came Gulfstream Park, where Kauai King finished a tantalizing second in the Hutchinson Stakes. "But he came back to win Gulfstream's Fountain of Youth race," Donald says. A disappointment followed, however. "He ran in the Florida Derby, and he didn't do well," Donald says. "But these things happen. Horses have problems, just like humans. They have aches and pains, and they don't win every time." Things were different when the two went to race the Governor's Gold Cup in Maryland. "He won, and he won very easily," Donald says. "His confidence got better. When a horse wins a race, it builds his confidence." Donald thinks that new-found confidence helped Kauai King perform his best at Churchill Downs. It was an unforgettable day. "I think he knew he won," Donald says. "I'm sure he was thrilled." A horse and jockey develop a relationship, Donald says. "There's a rapport between you. I was very fortunate during my career to have an opportunity to ride some good horses. What makes a good jockey is a good horse." Now 74, Donald hasn't left the world of Thoroughbred horses. Instead of riding, however, he works as a racing official at Gulfstream Park. His vision is very important to him, so when he noticed that his ability to see clearly was deteriorating, he went to see Dr. Stanley Braverman at the Braverman Eye Center. At the time, Donald wore glasses, and he thought he needed a new prescription. "But that wasn't the case," says the Kentucky native who now lives full time in South Florida. "When Dr. Braverman tested my eyes, my prescription hadn't changed. He told me I had cataracts." To eliminate the cataracts that were causing the trouble, Donald underwent a simple surgical procedure, and today, his vision is excellent. "It took about 10 minutes, and there was no pain whatsoever," he says. "Dr. Braverman has done surgery on a couple of my jockey friends, too. He is very thorough”. The other jockeys were also both very famous. One won the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby riding CarryBack in 1961 and the other won over 6000 races making him the winningest jockey in the history of horse racing. Because of their jockey excellence, they have all been inducted into the Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Another thing that they all have in common, is they all have had cataract surgery by Dr. Stanley Braverman. Since he had the procedure, Donald has been able to put away his glasses unless he is reading fine print. "My vision is very good now," he says. "I drive without glasses, I watch TV without glasses, I do most everything without glasses. I like not having to wear them." He's very pleased with the results. "I had a good experience," he says. "'I'm glad I went to see Dr. Braverman." WHAT ARE CATARACTS A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually

happy. In the case of lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses. CATARACT SURGERY: What to expect Cataract surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. An artificial lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, and Dr. Braverman's newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. Laser Assisted Cataract Extraction (LACE™ ) surgery, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used. ABOUT DR. STANLEY BRAVERMAN Dr. Stanley Braverman is a Voluntary Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine and the Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital/Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He is also an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at the Nova Southeastern School of Optometry. Spring cleaning your medicine cabinet? Simple steps to cut cabinet clutter (BPT) - As temperatures warm and flowers blossom, Mother Nature's renewal often inspires us to refresh our own surroundings. It's officially time for spring cleaning, but as you focus on scrubbing floors, refreshing draperies and dusting every surface in sight, don't forget about one area critical to your health and happiness: your medicine cabinet. Your medicine cabinet is the workhorse of your bathroom, meaning it can quickly become a chaotic mess of bottles, pastes, brushes and other items you need every day. It's time to cut through the clutter and refresh this area so you can find everything you need in an instant.
Too many things stacked together makes it difficult to see everything in the medicine cabinet. Take the time this spring to get organized and focus on items you really need. Go through your cabinet and remove unused and expired items that are taking up valuable space, including makeup, cough syrup and prescription medicine. Once you've cleared old and unused items, take the things you use regularly and group similar products together to make it easier to find what you need. For example, on the first shelf, place pastes and brushes, on the second shelf shaving supplies, and designate the top shelf for medications.
Step 1: Declutter
Step 2: A fresh start
Now, that your medicine cabinet is organized, it's time to stock up on essentials that you use regularly and keep you feeling happy and healthy. If you are a denture wearer, this is the perfect time to explore using an adhesive. According to a Fixodent survey conducted by Wakefield Research, more than 80 percent of denture wearers experience some sort of gum irritation. Denture adhesive helps to prevent gum soreness and as-
sists in protecting your mouth from the hidden enemies of food particles and odor causing bacteria. Fixodent Plus Gum Care provides long lasting hold that helps stop movement and helps prevent gum irritation, so you can keep enjoying life. Learn more at www.facebook.com/Fi xodent. Step 3: Be prepared Not only is it important to re-evaluate the contents of your medicine cabinet, it's
worthwhile to think ahead so you're always prepared. When it comes to small things like insect bites, cuts and stubborn coughs, staying organized and anticipating the unexpected is key. At the start of each season, consider what you might need. For example, spring is a good time to stock up on allergy medicine, antiseptic for bug bites and new bottles of sun block.
For prescription medications, consider signing up for your pharmacy's auto-refill program so you never forget an important refill again. Spring cleaning is a great way to reinvigorate your home and life. Remember to include organizing your medicine cabinet on your list of to-do's so that you're prepared for all the adventures that await in the season to come.

Senior poker players compete in Senior Championships
All-in! Senior poker players crowded around two poker tables in the Texas Hold’Em Poker classic in the 3rd Annual City of Hallandale Beach Senior Championships. 'Viva Florida 500' Curci House Tours will be taking place on Saturday, April 5 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The famed Curi House has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places By The United States Department of The Interior. Villa Providence is a Mediterranean-style constructed of concrete filled terra-cotta block walls, with Dade pine floors and imported Cuban tile details. The villa was previously the home of Frank and Rosina Curci and their eleven children. Memorial bricks can be purchased to be installed on the grounds of the home. The National Register of Historic Places has officially recognized the two-story Curci House in Hallandale Beach as one of its own. Hallandale Beach has never had a structure made it into the register until now. Free tours at the house, located at 324 Southwest Second Avenue at Southwest 4th Street, are offered on the first Saturday of each month. Her portrayal of the City of Hallandale Beach waterfront gateway and water tower earned her the top honors. This was the first year the City added a Cultural Arts element to the championships. Feed body and soul by giving your next Italian meal a nutritious twist • Lean ground turkey lends itself to a wide range of meals, from mouth-watering pasta dishes to spicy meatball dinners (BPT) - It is said that Italian food nourishes the body and soul by celebrating fresh ingredients prepared with love. Using care when selecting ingredients for your next Italian meal can be the difference between heavier fare and something family members can feel good about, especially at a time when many are striving to eat more nutritious foods. With some simple adjustments, such as switching to lean ground turkey in recipes that call for ground beef, it's easy to eat well without sacrificing taste. Through its Make The Switch campaign, Jennie-O Turkey Store challenges people across America to make more nutritious decisions by replacing ground beef with JENNIE-O Lean Ground Turkey or Lean Italian Seasoned Ground Turkey in their favorite recipes. A delicious and versatile protein, ground turkey is an easy substitute in recipes that typically call for ground beef. Lean ground turkey lends itself to a wide range of meals, from mouth-watering pasta
dishes to spicy meatball dinners. Here are some simple tips for giving your recipes a satisfying and nutritious twist using lean ground turkey. Tasty tips for easy Italian meals with lean ground turkey Baked turkey rigatoni: If you're looking for a quick and tasty weeknight meal that is sure to please your family, try baked turkey rigatoni. Fill your house with the tantalizing aroma of baked rigatoni pasta made with prepared spaghetti sauce, provolone and mozzarella cheeses, browned lean ground turkey and fat free sour cream. Delizioso. Mini turkey meatballs: Instead of making meatballs out of sausage, substitute lean ground turkey and combine with your favorite seasonings. Shape into 1-1/4 inch balls and bake until well done, add to spaghetti sauce and serve atop steaming pasta. Or make a hearty and satisfying Italian Meatball Sub: split a submarine roll and top with four piping hot turkey meatballs, spaghetti sauce
and shredded Parmesan cheese. Savory turkey Tuscan bean and tomato soup: Food is love when it comes to family, and there's nothing that delivers comfort more than a bowl of delicious homemade soup. Give your next batch of soup a Tuscan twist using Lean Italian Seasoned Ground Turkey. Cook turkey as specified on the package, add canned Great Northern beans, a can of diced tomatoes and reduced sodium chicken broth for a spicy, steamy treat that you'll feel good about feeding your family. Turkey tips: Always remember to cook turkey to 165 F. as measured by a meat thermometer. Cooking turkey to the right temperature not only ensures a safe meal, but it also achieves the most delicious taste and the perfect, never-dry tenderness that your family will love. Share the love and feel the love. Do you have a favorite recipe idea that includes nutritious ingredients like lean ground turkey? Share your
