A comedy classic returns

Jay Leno brings ‘You Bet Your Life’ back to television for a new generation to enjoy

By Heather Turk

Jay Leno may joke that the only reason he is hosting the remake of “You Bet Your Life” is because he wanted to do something else after leaving “The Tonight Show,” but the 1950s game show hosted by Groucho Marx holds a special spot in the late-night legend’s heart. “‘You Bet Your Life’ was always my favorite game show because I liked the way it was put together,” Leno told Sunseeker. “People would just walk out and Groucho would start talking to them. They weren’t in funny costumes or anything, they were just regular people, but then you’d find out, ‘Oh, that person’s pretty interesting,’ which is the way real life is.” Now airing in syndication, the comedy game show also stars Leno’s former “Tonight Show” bandleader Kevin Eubanks as co-host. Each 30-minute episode features two pairs of contestants trying to answer five questions 6

COVER STORY from a randomly selected category — like Greek mythology or acting roles played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — to win up to $5,000. While some questions are multiple choice, others are not. For the final question, the contestants must decide if they want to risk what they’ve won so far in an attempt to double their winnings or simply walk away with their share of the prize money that’s already in the bank.

Although the contestants on “You Bet Your Life” are obviously trying to win some cash, Leno stressed that the focus of the show isn’t on the money. Instead, it’s on the contestants. “You bring out two complete strangers, hopefully opposites — maybe a rapper from New York City and a lady who is a farmer in Ohio — and they have to team up then and there to win the money,” Leno explained. “You’ll see the interactions between the people and be surprised at what they know and what they don’t know, and that’s sort of the whole basis of the show. There’s also a comedy element, like Headlines (a ‘Tonight Show’ staple), but really the show is about the contestants. I’ve always found the contestants on a game show to be more interesting than the actual game. It’s kind of like ‘Family Feud.’ It’s always funny watching Steve (Harvey) talk to people to see what kind of reactions and answers he gets.”

Leno’s a natural fit to host “You Bet Your Life,” as not only does the former talk show host genuinely find people fascinating, but he also has plenty of experience making them feel comfortable on air. This comes in handy when Leno tries to help contestants discover a secret word that Eubanks shared before they came out onstage, sometimes asking them personal questions that might lead to one of them saying the word and splitting an extra $500 cash prize. “The whole 22 years we went out on the streets and talked to people for Jaywalking, we never had anybody say, ‘You made me look like a fool,’” Leno said. “We would ask people, ‘Are you okay with this?’ and they were willing to laugh at themselves. They realized they had made a mistake or given a funny answer. My favorite question was we asked people how Mount Rushmore was formed and more than one person said erosion. You go, really? You think millions of years of wind and rain picked four presidents, four of our greatest presidents? I mean, what are the odds of that? Then, they start to realize, oh no, I guess that’s not right. It’s all about figuring out how to draw humor from people without humiliating or degrading them.” For those interested in auditioning for “You Bet Your Life,” people can visit the show’s website for details on how to apply. Allegiant has partnered with the program not only to provide airfare for vacation packages contestants can win, but also to fly contestants out to California to be on it.

Leno said that audiences thought his interactions with Eubanks on “The Tonight Show” were hilarious, as Eubanks was always good at jumping in when the time was right

“We’re not looking for people who think they’re wacky, just regular folks who may run a potato chip museum or have some weird hobby or unusual talent. Just someone who is a bit extroverted without being over the top.”

“We’re not looking for people who think they’re wacky, just regular folks who may run a potato chip museum or have some weird hobby or unusual talent,” Leno said. “Just someone who is a bit extroverted without being over the top.” Whether people appear on the show or just tune in to watch it, Leno is confident that everyone will have a great time. “Everybody talks through email and Twitter these days, so to talk one-on-one with people and just have a little human interaction seemed like a fun thing to do,” Leno concluded. youbetyourlife.com

Las Vegas’ dining scene continues to flourish thanks to several diverse restaurant additions that are wowing even the most jaded foodies with their flavorful fare. One Steakhouse is serving up some of the most succulent steaks in the city at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. The second collaboration between acclaimed restaurateurs Michael and David Morton, the enticing steakhouse menu has a selection of steaks broiled to perfection at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, including a tasty 32-ounce tomahawk steak sliced for two with a roasted chili rub. Several surf & turf options are also available. Diners can complement their dinner entrée with one of the restaurant’s delectable appetizers or scrumptious sides, like the Grilled Maple-Glazed Bacon or the creamy Potato Gratin. onesteakhouselv.com For those hungry for some impeccable coastal Italian cuisine, check out Brezza inside Resorts World Las Vegas. Guests can choose from a variety of dryaged steaks and sustainable fish

grilled over white oak and olive branches for dinner, as well as an assortment of handmade pastas like the Cappellacci “Oreganata” with cauliflower, spinach, lemon, garlic and crispy capers. Brunch is also available on the weekend. While nothing at the restaurant disappoints, the Tempesta Culatello with baby kale, China Ranch dates and pillowy fried bread is especially delightful. Served during dinner hours, the appetizer tastes like a prosciutto donut! brezzaitalian.com

Vegas visitors can now relish some of the best dim sum in the world, too, at Din Tai Fung inside ARIA Resort & Casino. Las Vegas’ luscious buffets have something for everyone to enjoy

The dining scene in Las Vegas may be more well known for its celebrity chef restaurants than its bountiful buffets these days, but several of the city’s tastiest smorgasbords are still treating palates to a seemingly never-ending parade of flavors. Quite a few buffets have actually undergone some changes over the past year to give visitors even more to relish, including Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace. Regarded as one of the Strip’s best buffets, Bacchanal Buffet reopened in May following a multimillion-dollar refresh that included all-new design enhancements, 100 new dishes and the introduction of reservations on Opentable. Open nightly for dinner and Friday through Sunday for brunch, the buffet features such enticing new additions as roaming dim sum-style food carts during dinner hours that offer a variety of sumptuous dishes like foie gras PB&J, and a lavish pancake and waffle bar during brunch where guests can choose from several sweet selections like the green tea pancakes topped with toasted coconut and lilikoi syrup, or build their 14

MUSEUMS & EXHIBITS

BEHIND THE BLOOMS

Bringing Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens to life By Heather Turk

Although Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens is one of Las Vegas’ most popular free attractions, showcasing five breathtaking displays throughout the year, winter is an especially busy time at the 24-hour exhibit. Not only does it feature a festive holiday display through Jan. 1, with polar bear topiaries made from fresh-cut white carnations and a real 42-foot-tall Christmas tree, but it also showcases a Lunar New Year display from Jan. 8 until early March. Bellagio’s horticulture manager, Leslie Baeckeroot, works alongside a design company to come up with new designs and photo opportunities for the conservatory each season. While Baeckeroot admits that developing new themes can be a challenge, it’s also very rewarding.

The theme of Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens’ 2020 holiday display was “Hopeful Holidays”

Photos courtesy of MGM Resorts International

“I love it when people stop me to tell me what they love about a display or things they’d like to see,” Baeckeroot told Sunseeker. “Even years later, I remember what people have told me, and it’s very motivating.” It takes approximately 100 people working around the clock for six days to transition the 14,000-square-foot conservatory from one display to the next. More than 5,000 plants are typically featured in each display, including specimen trees, shrubs, vines and blooming plants. Most of the plants are grown in greenhouses in Utah, Oregon and California, with some trees brought in from as far as Florida.

The conservatory’s Lunar New Year 2020 display celebrated the Year of the Rat

Ten people maintain the conservatory daily, making sure everything is looking photogenic. They also make sure each display is as eco-friendly as possible, watering plants only when needed and recycling spent plant material into compost. While executing the displays to their fullest potential is a big responsibility, Baeckeroot said that creating “an immersive experience that gives people an unexpected chance to connect with nature and beauty right in the heart of the city” makes all of the hard work worth it. bellagio.mgmresorts.com SUNSEEKER

Shania Twain resumes performances of her second Las Vegas residency

By Heather Turk

Shania Twain may describe “Let’s Go!” The Las Vegas Residency as “way more of a stand-up party show” than her previous Las Vegas residency, “SHANIA: STILL THE ONE” at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, but fans who get tickets to see the high-energy production when it returns to Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in December are in for a celebration unlike any other. “It’s going to be the biggest party show that I’ve ever had just because emotions are going to be high for me,” the country superstar told Sunseeker. “I’ll be coming out of my COVID dormancy as a performer because I haven’t been onstage. I’ve been recording and using my voice, but I haven’t been out physically doing the performance. This will be my first show back, so it’s big for me.” Returning for 14 performances Dec. 2-12, 2021, and Feb. 11-26, at 8 p.m., Shania Twain “Let’s Go!” The Las Vegas Residency was one of the final shows to perform in Las Vegas before the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily halted all live entertainment on the Strip in March 2020. While Twain said she’s eager to carry on where she left 18

“Because it’s going to be December, I’ll already be getting into the spirit of Christmas,” Twain said. “So, I want to do some acoustic Christmas stuff with the audience during the show.”

Twain said “Let’s Go!” features “all the hits that everybody knows and can sing along with”

off — performing her greatest hits like “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” — she does plan on making a few updates to the production. A known animal lover, Twain said she’s excited to bring “a new little animal” onstage for one of her numbers since she loves having animals nearby and can’t bring her horses onstage like she did at The Colosseum. She also plans on playing around with her costumes and performing some different material.

“I’ve had many proposals at my shows over the years, which is why I started the ‘From This Moment On’ invite onstage for couples,” Twain explained. “So many couples get married to ‘From This Moment On’ and ‘You’re Still the One,’ so now I do a little vignette with them onstage, and it’s very romantic. It’s my gift, or I guess my show of appreciation, for people who include my music in their love story.”

“Because it’s going to be December, I’ll already be getting into the spirit of Christmas,” Twain said. “So, I want to do some acoustic Christmas stuff with the audience during the show.”

As for what the “That Don’t Impress Me Much” singer finds romantic, the answer is quite simple.

Twain plans on doing “a little love song section for lovers,” as well, when she’s back onstage in February for Valentine’s Day, although she always invites a pair of lovebirds from the audience to join her onstage when she performs “From This Moment On.”

“I think the most romantic things are things you do on the fly,” Twain stated. “My husband is very good at surprising me. In our marriage he’s very romantic, so maybe I have to set the bar high for myself this Valentine’s Day and ask him to come onstage and dance with me or something.” ticketmaster.com/ shaniavegas SUNSEEKER

SPREADING SOME MAGIC Criss Angel continues to leave his mark on Southern Nevada

Southern Nevada is becoming a mecca for Criss Angel fans, as the celebrated illusionist is constantly giving his “Loyal” fanbase more reasons to visit. In July, Angel resumed performances of his Las Vegas production, “MINDFREAK,” at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Not just a magic show, the immersive experience takes fans into the world of the most watched magician in television and internet history. From the moment guests step into the theater’s lobby, they’ll be surrounded by memorabilia and honors from Angel’s career as well as plenty of cool photo opportunities. Then, once they’re inside the theater, they can go onstage to try on the straitjacket Angel will escape from later that night while dangling above the audience by his feet. The jaw-dropping production features some of the most revolutionary illusions ever performed, including Angel’s signature illusion where he walks down a ladder parallel to the floor.

Fans can see even more items on display from Angel’s personal collection at his new restaurant, Cablp (Criss Angel’s Breakfast, Lunch & Pizza). Located in Overton, Nevada, near Valley of Fire State Park, the casual eatery opened this past summer and offers an extensive menu of tasty dishes — everything from East Coast-style pizza to homemade chicken parmesan. No visit is complete, however, without trying a gourmet Italian ice for dessert. While it’s not uncommon to see Angel’s brother, Costa Sarantakos, at the restaurant, sometimes even Angel stops by to levitate an order to someone’s table! Proving magicians always have something up their sleeves, Angel’s also been hard at work on his latest Vegas venture: “Mr. Smiles & Molly.” In collaboration with entertainment visionary Franco Dragone (Cirque du Soleil’s “O”), the surreal pre-nightclub experience will be a bold fusion between the worlds of electronic music and theater and is scheduled to open soon. crissangel.com

When Sunseeker caught up with Shania Twain to talk about her Las Vegas residency resuming performances inside Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in December, the country superstar mentioned that as much as she missed being on stage performing during the COVID-19 pandemic, she missed being in the audience watching a show just as much. “One of the big things I love about being back in Las Vegas for my shows is seeing the other shows,” Twain said. “Las Vegas is such a hub. There are all kinds of new shows in town. That’s what I plan on doing on my off days in the evening — go to other shows and catch up on what everybody else is doing now after all this time.” The Entertainment Capital of the World won’t let live entertainment fans like Twain down this winter, as not only are there several new shows on the Strip to see, but also several beloved headliners offering fans something different to enjoy. Celebrating 10 years of The Mob Museum Marking a major milestone in Downtown Las Vegas

By Yvonne Newman

Tourists haven’t been the only ones championing it, as locals love this interactive attraction, too. Everyone has made The Mob Museum their own, coming back time and again to immerse themselves in the true stories of organized crime in America and how it’s combated. “More than 3 million guests have visited the museum and experienced our diverse exhibits and programs, all designed to advance the public’s understanding of organized crime’s history and impact on American society,” said Jonathan Ullman, president and CEO of The Mob Museum. Over the past decade, The Mob Museum garnered loads of accolades, including being named one of National Geographic’s Top 10 Things to Do in Las 28

Vegas and USA Today’s Best Museum in Nevada, while The New York Times also called it “a must for travelers.” The idea for The Mob Museum originated with former Mayor Oscar Goodman, who began his career as a defense attorney for notorious figures like Meyer Lansky and Tony Spilotro. Housed in a landmark building at 300 Stewart Avenue that originally opened in 1933 as a post office and federal courthouse, it contains three floors and a basement densely packed with artifacts, videos and multimedia exhibits. The Mob Museum launch coincided with the anniversary of the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Among its original permanent exhibits is the brick wall that absorbed the bullets aimed at seven mobsters believed to have been lined up and shot dead by Al Capone’s Chicago outfit as well as a series of photos displaying “Made Men” in mafia history, wiretap recordings and much more.

An expansion in 2018 added a firearm training simulator and hands-on crime lab encompassing DNA profiling, fingerprint analysis, forensics and ballistics, along with The Underground distillery and speakeasy that serves its own moonshine-based cocktails. Among The Mob Museum’s latest developments is The Fabulous Flamingo exhibit, showcasing rare artifacts like original builder Billy Wilkerson’s down payment check for the land and a legal document signed by Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel. The Mob Museum will host a special event — The Fabulous Flamingo: Bugsy, Billy, Virginia and the Making of Modern Las Vegas — on December 14, 2021 in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Flamingo Resort & Casino. Authors Larry Gragg and W.R. Wilkerson III and journalist Lissa Townsend Rodgers will recount its dramatic origins and enduring impact on Las Vegas, while highlighting the roles of iconic figures. A lavish Undercover of the Night Gala is also set to mark The Mob Museum’s 10th year on February 17, 2022. Co-hosted by honorary chairs, Mayors Carolyn and Oscar Goodman, attendees will enjoy gourmet food, specialty cocktails, live entertainment and the exclusive opportunity to experience firsthand accounts from undercover agents about their time in the field. “We are immensely proud of our accomplishments — preserving history, sharing fascinating insights and exposing diverse audiences to a wide range of important topics relating to the criminal justice system,” added Ullman, “and we look forward to bringing more enlightening and meaningful programming for years to come.” themobmuseum.org

FIERY PHOENIX PIZZA Artisan pizza slices and whole pies on Downtown Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row By Amy Young

Photo of pizza oven courtesy of iStock by Getty; pizzas courtesy of of Hot Daisy Pizza

When it comes to pizza, sometimes you just want to grab a slice and be on your way. Other times, you’ll want a whole pie … or two. At Hot Daisy Pizza in Downtown Phoenix, either option is yours. This small shop in the Roosevelt Row Artists’ District is owned by Tammie Coe, a pastry chef whose stylish confections earned national acclaim. It once housed Tammie Coe Cakes, but now pizza has taken prevalence. Thankfully, Hot Daisy offers some of her delectable desserts, which are found in some other metro Phoenix shops — and you can still order her famous signature cakes. It’s truly hard to think about anything other than pizza when you step inside Hot Daisy’s doors. The counter is loaded with trays of pies that are cut into slices, ready to get crisped up in the 800-degree oven. A tasty pizza is as good as its crust foundation, and at Hot Daisy, the crust is a righteous combination of crunchy and chewy. It sets the stage for the toppings of your choice, whether you’re picking a signature pizza or going the create-your-own route. For a meatless option, the Margherita Pie is a must. They don’t skimp on the tasty tomato sauce. From there, it’s simple, fresh mozzarella and basil cover the dough for a delicious, gooey experience. The Margheroni Pie puts a twist on that classic by adding pepperoni. Hot Daisy has plenty of other great options for carnivores as well. The Italian Stallion Arturo Pie loads pepperoni, Italian sausage, meatball, mozzarella

and red onion on top of that tangy tomato sauce for one hearty pizza. The Corny Baby Elote Pie pays tribute to some southwestern flavors. The crispy crust is topped with roasted corn, cilantro, mozzarella, cotija cheese and chipotle oil. Far from a traditional pizza, this one is not just unique; it’s addictive. Bacon, prosciutto and egg are some of the other proteins that can be added to top the pie. It’s not just pizza on the menu. Salads, sandwiches and Cheezy Garlic Western Sticks are great choices, too. Inside the refrigerated case, special desserts are always offered. Lucky visitors might even find one of Coe’s red velvet cupcakes waiting for them inside. hotdaisypizza.com

A MOTEL TO CHECK OUT

Something strange is afoot at the Madcap Motel

Every room is different inside the Madcap Motel

Deep in the city of Los Angeles, lies a remnant of the past. A vintage motel, seemingly unassuming, decked in yellow stripes, and doted on by bellhops clothed in khaki. For the modern traveler, it would appear to be a respite for an evening’s snooze in the city, but this motel isn’t accepting reservations. Instead, it’s offering glimpses into another dimension, a place known only as Elsewhere, where the laws of reality no longer apply. For the staff, it’s just another day at the Madcap Motel.

After checking in, guests of the Madcap Motel are invited to roam the kitchy corridors and tour the rooms at their leisure to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of J.P. Sando, the motel’s enigmatic former owner. Staff are available if anyone gets lost, though the tour itself is almost completely selfguided. A trip through the museum will reward keen-eyed customers with hidden passageways, infinity rooms, floating furniture, hungry hedge people and other odd residents that need to be seen to be believed.

All tickets must be purchased in advance from the motel’s website. While interdimensional travel seems like it would run up quite the price tag, a trip through the wormhole only costs people ages 12 and up $40. A single tour promises 17,000 square feet of adventure, with 18 rooms of interactive art, theatrical and magic performances, and immersive 1960s sets. Tickets for children 4-11 only run at $30, though all minors must be accompanied by an adult, lest they slip into Elsewhere, never to be seen again. madcapmotel.com

AND THE OSCAR GOES TO… A look at the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

Armor created for the movie “Black Panther” inside the Stories of Cinema exhibit

By Teresa Bitler

Opened in late September 2021, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures celebrates filmmaking. Not only will you learn about great directors and screenwriters on a visit but costume designers, sound technicians, film editors and other specialists. Plan to spend at least two hours visiting the seven-story museum, or longer if you love the technical aspects of movie making. STORIES OF CINEMA At the entrance to the museum, the Stories of Cinema exhibit kicks things off with multiple screens showing scenes from popular

movies spanning the industry’s earliest days to the present. Upstairs, the filmmaking process unfolds, focusing first on influential directors, then diving deeper to introduce the art of screenwriting, sound editing and more.

to accept an Oscar of their own on the third floor. After roleplaying the experience, the museum will email participants a video showing them walking across the stage at Dolby Theatre, complete with the applause.

The second floor also showcases several actual Oscars and video clips from acceptance speeches, but not from any famous actors. These speakers are the movie’s unsung heroes, like the costume designers whose designs are on display around the corner. Sprinkled throughout the exhibit are costumes and props from fanfavorite films, including Dorothy’s ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz” and R2-D2 and C-3PO from the “Star Wars” franchise.

On the fourth floor, the Pixar Toy Story 3D Zoetrope features 24 maquettes that bring the characters to life. Across the fifth-floor bridge, the Dolby Family Terrace offers incredible views of Hollywood, including the famous sign.

EXCELLENCE IN A BOTTLE

Meet the brothers behind DAOU Family Estates

By Teresa Bitler

Brothers Georges and Daniel Daou dreamed of finding the perfect terroir to create world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. Their dream came true when they discovered what would become known as DAOU Mountain in Paso Robles. Here, guests not only enjoy some of California’s most coveted wines, but also a hospitality experience without peer. AN IMPROBABLE JOURNEY The story of DAOU Family Estates begins long before the brothers found their way to Paso Robles. As boys growing up in Lebanon, Georges and Daniel Daou’s idyllic childhood was disrupted when an errant missile struck the family home at the advent of the Lebanese Civil War. The brothers both sustained serious injuries, and as the war escalated, the family was forced to flee to France. There, Georges and Daniel fell in love with the vineyards, the art of hospitality and saw how a bottle of wine could bring people together. They eventually moved to San Diego to study engineering. Then, in 1998, after a successful run in tech, it was finally time for their winemaking dream

SO CAL

to prevail. After all, driven by his passion, Daniel had spent years growing Cabernet Sauvignon on a one-acre plot and making wine in his garage. Now, they just needed the perfect location to grow the Bordeaux-style wines that inspired them. It would take several years before their quest would lead them to Paso Robles. DISCOVERING DAOU MOUNTAIN DAOU Mountain didn’t look like much when the brothers acquired it in 2007. As Georges recalls, “No wells, no vines, no buildings, no power, no tasting room—nothing but incredible potential.”

But Georges and Daniel had a vision for this land. “The soil was amazing,” Georges explains. “The climate was amazing. We had found a hidden gem—a terroir that was absolutely perfect for growing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varieties.” Today, the 212-acre mountaintop estate in the Adelaida District produces some of California’s finest wines. It has also become a must-visit for wine travelers coming to Paso Robles, which is located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles—and just 60 miles from the Allegiant Airlines hub of Santa Maria. Over the past decade, DAOU wines, crafted by Winemaker, Daniel Daou, have been awarded scores of 90+ points more than 200 times. The DAOU Soul of a Lion is named for the brothers’ father and is one of the most anticipated Cabernet Sauvignon releases each year. Other coveted wines include DAOU Rosé, Pessimist by DAOU, and DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon, which is available for sale on board Allegiant Airlines.

Georges and Daniel Daou, Owners of DAOU Family Estates

A WINE DESTINATION LIKE NO OTHER What you sip in your glass is only the beginning, according to Georges. To truly appreciate DAOU, a visit to the vineyard is necessary. “When you come, you will find that the wines and views are unparalleled, and that the people and hospitality are unparalleled, too,” he says. DAOU Family Estates has a variety of immersive experiences in their tasting room on DAOU Mountain, just 15 minutes away from downtown Paso Robles. On the “Discover DAOU Tasting Experience,” guests can enjoy a taste of five DAOU Estate and Reserve wines. With selections such as charcuterie, cheese and steak frites, the Estate Chef creates the perfect complement to your tasting. DAOU also offers a “Picnic Experience” where guests enjoy a curated pairing while overlooking the vistas at 2,200 feet elevation as well as a “Private Barrel Tasting” featuring flagship wines such as Soul of a Lion. Reservations are required. DAOUvineyards.com

THERE’S SNOW PLACE LIKE THE ROCKIES

Snow sports in the Rocky Mountains

By Sean Davies

Winter weather may spell gloomy moods to some, but on the sprawling slopes of the Rocky Mountains, snowsports athletes couldn’t be happier. In Colorado’s Telluride or nestled in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, newly fallen snow means fresh powder and a day of adventure and excitement, barreling down a pristine mountain face towards cozy enclosures offering hot drinks and a place to rest by the fire. TELLURIDE Folks flock to Telluride for its accessibility. The variety of terrain found in Telluride allows parties of all skill levels to have the experience of traversing a mountainside. Beginners won’t feel cheated as they have green runs like the Galloping Goose, winding all the way down Bald Mountain, crisscrossing other avenues to give exciting options for multiple runs.

RECREATION

Experts will delight in the hike-to terrain like that found at Black Iron Bowl, accessible via Lift 12 (Prospect Lift) and a short hike out of Prospect Ridge. Anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes hiking time along the ridge, skiers and boarders may drop in, with some drops up to 1,000 vertical feet, and down into Prospect bowl.

A few steps from the Gondola at the base of the Village Express (4) in the Mountain Village core, the Tomboy Tavern offers Colorado craft beers, worldclass whiskies and a meticulously curated wine list. Elevated American fare populates an approachable yet upscale menu, which can be enjoyed inside or outdoors on their patio, in view of the mountain side.

Terrain parks, like Ute Park located off the Ute Park Express, give skiers and snowboarders courses to practice freestyle tricks. At Ute Park over 50 jumps, rails and other features are designed specifically for beginner and intermediate snowsports athletes to help improve their skills. Hoot Brown intermediate and advanced parks have everything else a freestyle skier could need, including a couple 20 foot jumps promising ample hang time.

Even towards the top of the mountain, luxurious eating options are nestled amongst spectacular ski-spots. From the top of Gold Hill Express Lift (14), a ski along the See Forever Trail will not only provide 360-degree views of the San Juan Mountains, but a path down Woozley’s Way Trail to Bon Vivant, a French restaurant serving classic cuisine and contemporary creations. The allFrench wine list, curated by wine director Andrew Shaffner, is not to be overlooked... unless more skiing is also on the menu.

While it’s possible to stay at the base of the mountain in Telluride, the Mountain Village provides wine, dining and reclining on the mountain, in top notch accommodations like The Peaks Resort & Spa in Mountain Village. The resort is warm and welcoming, featuring an unmatched collection of onsite amenities, including a special ski entrance. The renowned spa features treatments that utilize their expertly-curated collection of eco-conscious beauty products.

JACKSON HOLE MOUNTAIN RESORT Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is the perfect middle ground between Jackson, Wyoming and Grand Teton Park, and not just because it’s physically in the middle of the two. The splendor of the great outdoors is buttressed by the charming Teton Village, closing the gap between rugged wilderness and town lodging. Shopping, dining and sequestering all have a home in the heart of Teton Village. Snow forts and sledding, ice skating through town square or in front of Teton Village Sports, there’s no shortage of winter fun to be had before visitors even summit the mountains. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has 2,500 acres of variable terrain that offer something for all ability levels. The mountain features 13 lifts, including Bridger Gondola and world-famous Aerial Tram, “Big Red,” whisking skiers to over 130 named trails. With about 50 percent of the slopes designed for experts, 40 percent for intermediate and 10 percent for beginners, everyone can carve the hills ‘til the sun goes down or take lessons with one of the many competent and friendly trainers. Solitude Station provides newcomers of all ages with the premier mountain sports school hub for anyone 8 years old and up, including adult beginners and folks who just want to brush up on their snow skills. Rentals for children and adult beginners are available, as are lift tickets for all types of skiers and riders. Of course, dining on the mountain is as much a catered experience as riding down its well-sculpted sides, what with restaurants like Piste Mountain Bistro. Where one might expect perilous plunges, at the top of the Bridger Gondola lies delicious dishes from a new menu, promising to please everyone from frivolous foodies to casual masticators. A friendly bar and a cozy fire provide comfort, while floor-to-ceiling windows ensure the best views of the mountain and valley are not sacrificed for a warm shelter from the snow.

Allegiant

CARES

Allegiant returns to making dreams come true

Allegiant is built around the idea that travel should be accessible to everyone. That philosophy is at the heart of our national partnership with Make-A-Wish®, the nonprofit organization dedicated to granting the wishes of children facing critical illnesses. Wishes not only help hope and joy to shine through the toughest of circumstances, but can also make a real difference in improving health outcomes for many children. About 77 percent of those wishes involve travel, and since 2012 Allegiant has provided free, nonstop flights for nearly 2,000 wish kids and their families to reach dream destinations across the country — from Florida and California theme parks to sports events, concerts and celebrations in New York and Las Vegas. We’ve also been honored to help design and host special wishes, including a visit to Allegiant’s west coast training center, where prospective pilot Eric flew a full-motion professional flight simulator, and where honorary flight attendant, 5 year-old SJ, handed out snacks to his fellow passengers during his wish trip to Orlando. When the pandemic delayed the fulfillment of wishes involving air travel, Allegiant team members stepped in to help fill the void. Pilots and flight attendants delivered messages of hope and gifts of encouragement to the homes of wish kids in Las Vegas. Administrative staff helped with a functional and beautiful bedroom makeover for 9 year-old wish kid Annay. And, across the country, hundreds

of team members participated in “virtual” walks and fundraisers during this most unusual year. This fall, our team will once again welcome wish kids on board Allegiant flights as they resume travel to fulfill their wishes. You, too, can help support MakeA-Wish and their important mission during your flight. For every purchase of a specially-branded Wingz Kids Snack Pack, Allegiant will donate $1 toward making even more wishes come true. Plane spotters should also keep an eye out for Allegiant’s one-of-a-kind Make-A-Wish livery aircraft — a symbol of our team’s dedication to this hopeful, life-changing cause, and to keeping travel accessible for all. Go to allegiant.com/make-wish for more information about Allegiant’s proud partnership with Make-A-Wish. Visit wish.org to find out how you can get involved with Make-A-Wish in your home community.

SPOTLIGHT

TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Throughout all the uncertainty and challenges of the past two years, Allegiant Team members have been on the front lines helping us to continue delivering on our promise of safe, reliable, low-cost travel with a little sunshine. Each month, numerous Team Members are nominated for recognition in going above and beyond and demonstrating their dedication to our customers as well as each other. Below are two recent examples of employees we recognize for their passion and enthusiasm. Lea G, Flight Attendant (Cincinnati, OH- CVG) Lea was scheduled to fly a very special flight chartered to transport Afghan refugees. Although the flight attendants had little notice or understanding of what these flights would entail, Lea understood that there would likely be many children onboard. The day before her trip, Lea went to the store and purchased coloring kits to distribute to the children. Realizing that these children would be confused, exhausted and anxious on these flights, Lea’s kindness and forethought brought smiles and relief to the children and parents alike. Logan J, Stations Area Manager (Medford, OR- MFR) On a recent flight, a passenger who was traveling to Las Vegas to attend the funeral of a loved one checked in a bag at the ticket counter. Unfortunately, on arrival in Las Vegas it was realized that the passenger’s bag was missing. Upon learning of the mishap Logan sprang into action to reunite the passenger and their bag. Logan not only located the bag, but escorted it to Las Vegas to personally deliver to the passenger to ensure they received it before the funeral.
