SUMMER IN THE SMOKIES

Experience the beauty and wonder of Gatlinburg, Tennessee

By Heather Turk

SkyBridge at Gatlinburg SkyLift Park

A vacation destination unlike any other, Gatlinburg, Tennessee offers breathtaking beauty and adrenaline-pumping adventure around every corner.

It is estimated that 1,900 black bears live in the Smokies. Sightings are common in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

6

SUNSEEKER

Surrounded on three sides by Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg is a great place to reconnect with the outdoors. Not only are many of its restaurants, shops and attractions within walking distance of one another, but the charming mountain town also offers three separate entrances to the park, making it easy for visitors to access more than 380 miles of scenic roadways and 800 miles of trails. Although Great Smoky Mountains National Park experiences its highest visitation rates during the summer and fall, there are still lesstraveled trails guests can explore to experience true solitude. Guests can also try to avoid the crowds at more popular destinations like

Cades Cove — a valley that offers some of the park’s best wildlife viewing opportunities — by visiting early in the morning. For more adventurous sightseers, Anakeesta has plenty of sky-high thrills. The outdoor family theme park features an assortment of aerial attractions, including a dueling zipline and the longest tree-based skywalk in North America with 880 feet of suspended bridges. It’s also home to the only singlerail mountain coaster in the United States, where riders can experience 1,600 feet of downhill twists and turns at speeds up to 25 miles per hour. Summertime is actually the perfect time to visit Anakeesta, as from June 6 through Sept. 11, visitors can experience the award-winning “Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects Made with LEGO Bricks” exhibit showcasing beautiful works of art that explore animal endangerment, the balance of ecosystems and mankind’s relationship with nature. The exhibit coincides with Anakeesta’s Summer in the Smokies celebration, which features live music daily in its Black Bear shopping village, chef specials throughout the park and custom specialty drinks.

Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway

Visitors can experience even more family fun “just an aerial tram ride away” at Ober Gatlinburg. In addition to such popular year-round attractions as Ice Bumper Cars and indoor ice skating, the amusement park and Tennessee’s only ski area has several seasonal activities guests can enjoy, including Summer Tubing and sledding down an Alpine Slide. There’s also a Wildlife Encounter where guests can see a variety of animals in a safe environment, including black bears, river otters and bobcats. Guests can get up close to an array of animals at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, too. Visitors can glide over 12-foot sharks on an indoor Glass Bottom Boat Adventure, touch a stingray and book a painting session with a playful African penguin. During June and July, it’s even common to see mermaids swimming at the aquarium!

For those feeling brave, some of the best views in town can be found at Gatlinburg SkyLift Park. Visitors will embark on a 10-minute ride onboard the first four-season scenic chairlift in the South to soak up panoramic views of the surrounding Smoky Mountains from the 680-foot-long SkyBridge. The longest pedestrian cable bridge in North America, the SkyBridge features 30 feet of see-through glass panels in the middle of it, providing guests with an exhilarating view of downtown Gatlinburg 500 feet below. The park’s new SkyTrail provides additional viewing opportunities, including a unique view of the SkyBridge. If you’re visiting during the Fourth of July, there’s arguably no better vantage point in Gatlinburg to watch the fireworks than on the SkyBridge! While Gatlinburg is renowned for its attractions, its dining scene is equally impressive. Breakfast lovers are sure to flip over the area’s many delectable pancake houses, like Crockett’s Breakfast Camp. Known as much for its giant cinnamon rolls and breakfast skillets as its griddle cakes, the Appalachian-inspired restaurant makes sure guests never leave hungry thanks to its generous portions. Country music superstar Blake Shelton’s Ole Red is another dining favorite. Diners can enjoy live country music while savoring some of the best Southern cuisine in town, like the Hillbilly Bones Smoked Half Rack of St. Louis-style ribs. Guests never know who might show up for a performance, from former contestants on “The Voice” to Shelton himself. Even if Shelton isn’t onstage, he has been known to call the restaurant on occasion to give guests a special shoutout.

When it’s time to call it a night, Gatlinburg has several lodging options within walking distance to many of its top attractions, like the island-inspired Margaritaville Resort. The Appy Lodge is another standout that’s conveniently located at the entrance of Gatlinburg. Themed after the Appalachian Trail, the rustic 101-room property features such relaxing amenities as outdoor fire pits and indoor and outdoor pools. It is easy to enjoy dinner and a show in Punta Gorda/ Englewood Beach, as several of the area’s finest restaurants offer live entertainment. One of Southwest Florida’s most unique new restaurants not only showcases a diverse range of local and regional music acts, but also well-known touring artists. At Twisted Fork, guests can relish down-home chefinspired Florida cuisine with a twist, like the flavorful Korean BBQ pepper-glazed Hog Wings, while listening to live music on its patio stage Monday through Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. The scratch kitchen also boasts a separate 24,000-square-foot covered outdoor music venue — Bert’s Back Porch — that hosts live concerts on the weekend and line dancing with a country music DJ every Thursday starting at 6 p.m. While general admission to many of its shows are free, some concerts do require a ticket, like when Puddle of Mudd recently rocked the venue. twistedfork.net

For those hungry for some fun, The Celtic Ray Public House has complimentary live music in its outdoor beer garden Saturday and Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. and then again starting at 9 p.m. Guests can enjoy traditional Irish fare made from family recipes, like the scrumptious Shepherd’s Pie, as they listen to acts not often featured elsewhere in town. Regularly scheduled bands audiences won’t want to miss include reggae group The Freecoasters and Irish speed folk band Clover’s Revenge. celticray.net Always a party, Dean’s South of the Border also features complimentary live music. In addition to high-energy nightly entertainment, guests can enjoy acoustic duos and soloists Friday from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. while savoring such delicious Tex-Mex dishes as the grilled or fried fish tacos. Remarkable places to go for a walk in Punta Gorda/ Englewood Beach

By Heather Turk

There’s no reason not to meet your daily step goal when you’re in Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach. The area has plenty of places to go for a walk that are so unforgettable, you’ll forget you’re even exercising during your trip! Guests can go for a walk through “the real old Florida” at Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center, part of the 45,387-acre Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park. Offering 6 miles of marked hiking trails for visitors to enjoy, each trail provides guests with an opportunity to explore different ecosystems in the park, including mangrove forests and salt marshes, and see various species of wildlife that call the preserve home. The Eagle Point Trail, in particular, is a favorite with guests, as it leads to a freshwater pond full of fish, softshell turtles and alligators. There’s also a beautiful butterfly garden guests can walk through, and during the summer months, visitors can book a full moon guided hike. checflorida.org Stump Pass Beach State Park is another peaceful place to go for a stroll. The pristine park is comprised of the southernmost mile of Manasota Key and three smaller, nearby islands in Lemon Bay (Peterson Island, 14

Visitors can also explore a breathtaking sanctuary where art and nature come together at Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Gardens. Abutting the Peace River, the 30-acre waterfront oasis encompasses five ecosystems, including marshlands and an estuarine tidal basin, and has more than 15,000 square feet of boardwalks and docks that provide optimum viewing of its massive sculptures. Not only will guests see blooming tropical flora and native fauna during their visit, but they’ll also see stunning sculptures from around the world — like a yellow sculpture of Andy Warhol by Sarasotabased modern sculptor Jack Dowd. The gardens recently welcomed a couple of modern Shona stone sculptures from Zimbabwe, too, including one by famed sculptor Dominic Benhura of three life-size children playing the game Leapfrog. peacerivergardens.org Probably the most popular place to go for a walk in Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach, though, is Punta Gorda’s Harborwalk. Located along the Charlotte Harbor shoreline, the vibrant pathway runs for 2.5 miles and connects to several area parks and attractions, including Fishermen’s Village where visitors can shop at more than 20 independently owned stores and boutiques. Guests can also take the Harborwalk to Veterans Park Memorial Garden inside Laishley Park, home to the Vietnam Wall of Southwest Florida. An exact half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., the monument features the names of more than 58,000 men and women who gave their lives during the war or remain missing. There’s no doubt visitors will feel like they walked with a purpose after paying their respects. ci.punta-gorda.fl.us/ visitors/punta-gorda-pathways/harborwalk

The Fort Myers area has a beach for everyone to enjoy

By Heather Turk

While the Fort Myers area is home to some of Southwest Florida’s most beautiful beaches, no two beaches are quite the same. Each beach has unique qualities that will appeal to different types of visitors, so it is important to know which beach is right for you.

Lighthouse Beach Park

Cayo Costa State Park

Couples hoping to enjoy a romantic stroll in the sand needn’t look any further than the appropriately named Lovers Key State Park. Boasting a 2-mile stretch of untarnished sugar sand, Lovers Key has been the site of many Gulf-side weddings over the years. It’s not uncommon to spot a dolphin swimming out in its turquoise waters, further adding to the magic of the picturesque paradise. Couples can rent a kayak and venture out into the water themselves to explore the serene canals and lagoons, which are popular grazing spots for manatees and shorebirds. For more quality alone time, the park offers over 5 miles of multiuse trails where couples can walk hand in hand in almost total seclusion — minus the occasional encounter with some amazing wildlife, of course. Campers, meanwhile, will love Cayo Costa State Park and its 9 miles of untouched beaches. Accessible only by private boat or Captiva Cruises’ ferry service, the secluded park has cabins near its beach and nature trails to accommodate overnight stays as well as 30 primitive tent sites. Each cabin is furnished with three bunk beds, Visitors to Dog Beach Park always leave with a smile on their face 22

and there are outdoor grills for anglers to cook their fresh catches on. Home to a broad range of flora and fauna, the park offers an abundance of wildlife viewing opportunities. During the summer months, guests might even see sea turtles using the park’s beaches to nest. The park also preserves eight prehistoric and six historic sites, including an early 20th century military quarantine station, making it a beloved spot with history buffs. While Cayo Costa State Park is renowned for its shelling opportunities, another popular place to go shelling is Lighthouse Beach Park. A favorite with families, the scenic park actually has a display for guests to look at with pictures of different shells often found on the beach. Although the beach is spectacular for shelling at any time of day, guests who search in the morning have the best luck at finding unique shells, like the leopardspotted Junonia. Just be careful not to accidentally take home any live shells as a souvenir!

For those traveling with man’s best friend — or those who just miss their pup back home — Dog Beach Park is always a fun place for animal lovers to visit. Located just south of Lovers Key State Park, the dog-friendly park allows dogs to run off leash. That means guests and their pets can actually splash around in the water together and run up and down the stretch of sand playing fetch.

There’s something for everyone to enjoy in this actionpacked, chopper-themed restaurant/bar. Add to that a panorama of motorcycle memorabilia that surrounds the spacious dining room/bar and a well-stocked gift shop. Restaurant menu items bear quirky, biker-themed names and are mostly hearty fare — burgers, steaks, tacos, pizza and pulled pork plates — all served up with generous portions at affordable prices. Sixty-four big-screen TVs, expansive indoor and outdoor bars, and thirst-quenching libations make it hard to leave. Adventure, culture and history await with Tampa’s all-new Riverwalk Attraction Pass

By Heather Turk

No trip to Tampa is complete without visiting the Tampa Riverwalk. Conceived in 1975 by Tampa’s mayor at the time, Bill Poe, the Tampa Riverwalk is a 2.6-mile multiuse pathway along the Hillsborough River that connects many of downtown Tampa’s best museums, shops, restaurants and parks. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities while strolling down the picturesque path — including a self-guided public art tour — and attend special events like the July 4th Boat Parade and Blessing of the Fleet.

Tampa Riverwalk’s July 4th fireworks display

“Our Tampa Riverwalk showcases unique gems that visitors can access while obtaining incredible waterfront views,” said Santiago C. Corrada, president and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay. “From water activities to amazing museums, visitors can experience culture and open-air adventures.” Probably the best way to experience the Tampa Riverwalk is with Visit Tampa Bay’s new Riverwalk Attraction Pass, which offers access to eight of the destination’s most popular attractions for one low price. No app is required to purchase the pass; guests can simply order one online and have it sent to them via text or email.

One of the more popular attractions included on the Riverwalk Attraction Pass is The Florida Aquarium. Home to more than 9,000 animals, the 250,000-squarefoot aquarium is a favorite with families. Guests can visit a free-flying bird aviary and see native Florida species like the roseate spoonbill, hang out with some ring-tailed lemurs and even touch a moon jelly at one of only five moon jelly touch tanks in the nation. Another attraction included on the pass that’s a big hit with kids is Glazer Children’s Museum. Boasting 35,000 square feet of exhibits, the interactive learning laboratory encourages children ages 10 and younger to play with a purpose. For a limited time, visitors can explore the worlds of some of their favorite children’s books — including “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” and “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” — when “Storyland” stops by the museum June 11 through Sept. 24. The traveling exhibition transforms seven beloved picture books into three-dimensional play and bilingual (English and Spanish) learning environments that kids and kids at heart are sure to love.

Prices for the Riverwalk Attraction Pass range from $35 to $55 for a 1-day pass and $49 to $79 for a 3-day pass. Each pass is good for a single admission to each featured attraction, including the Tampa Museum of Art, the Pirate Water Taxi, the Henry B. FLORIDA’S ‘GOLF’ COAST

Enjoy some tee time in St. Pete, Clearwater and Tampa

By Heather Turk

Saddlebrook Resort

Whether you are visiting St. Pete, Clearwater or Tampa, Florida’s Gulf Coast has several gorgeous greens for golfers to play on. Known for its great course conditions and playability for all skill levels, Mangrove Bay Golf Course has been a local favorite since 1978. The par-72, 6,656-yard public golf course was designed by Bill Amick and is located on 180 beautifully maintained acres in northeast St. Petersburg. In addition to featuring 18 holes of championship golf on USGA-modified Platinum Paspalum greens, Mangrove Bay has its own driving range, practice

green, chipping green and pitching green with a sand bunker. PGA golf instruction is available for golfers of all ages, too. Green fees average between $27 and $39, making the course an excellent value. golfstpete.com/mangrovebay For those wanting to play a challenging round of golf in less time, Twin Brooks Golf Course is an exciting (and affordable!) 9-hole public golf course located near the South Pinellas beaches. Water comes into play on six of the par-3 holes found on the scenic, tree-lined course. PGA instruction is available for groups and individuals, and practice facilities include an 18-station

driving range and putting green. Additionally, there is a practice area available for a nominal fee that has three holes, a putting green and a pitching green with a sand bunker. golfstpete.com/twinbrooks Golfers always feel like a winner after playing a round at Clearwater’s Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Course, as proceeds from the public golf course and 49-bay driving range fund approximately 22 percent of the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation’s Chi Chi Rodriguez Academy and First Tee programs. The educational programs help more than 3,000 struggling students in the area each year improve their academic performance, self-esteem and character by using the golf course as a living classroom. Named after professional golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez, the 18-hole, par-69 course features more than 70 sand traps, water hazards on 12 holes, two-tied greens and fairways covered with Bermuda grass. Rates are very reasonable depending on the season, with tee times typically ranging from $30 to $70. Lessons can be booked with PGA and LPGA teaching pros as well. chichi.org If you want to tee off in Tampa, there is arguably no better place to be than Saddlebrook Resort. A dream destination for golfers, the 480-acre resort is home to two of Florida’s most picturesque and playable golf courses: the 18-hole, par-71 Palmer Golf Course and the 18-hole, par-70 Saddlebrook Golf Course. Designed by golf legend Arnold Palmer, both courses incorporate rolling fairways and well-maintained greens along with wilderness areas full of cypress, pine and palm trees. The Palmer Golf Course, with its TifEagle greens, provides a test for players of all skill levels, while the Saddlebrook Golf Course, with its tight fairways, challenges golfers with penalty areas that come into play on 17 of its holes. A 16-acre golf training center and range is also located on property, and professional golf instruction is available at the renowned Saddlebrook Golf Academy. saddlebrook.com

THE GEM

OF FLORIDA’S GULF COAST

Why everyone is talking about St Pete Beach

By Nancy Foster

There’s a little slice of heaven on Florida’s west coast, just a short 20 miles from St. Petersburg/ Clearwater International Airport. St. Pete Beach is a sliver of a community only three miles long named in 2021 by Trip Advisor’s community of travelers as the #1 U.S. Beach. Soft white sands and year-round warm waters are what lure most visitors to this family-friendly beach paradise. Great viewing points are easy to find in this laid-back beach town, although the favorite of many is at the water’s edge, where panoramic views are unobstructed. ACCOMMODATIONS Sunset gazing spots are prevalent at most of the properties along Gulf Boulevard, the main thoroughfare. Numerous independent hotels have been satisfying guests for three decades or more with coveted features including private terraces, tiki bars and outdoor dining. A few to consider are Island Grand Beach Resort, a Tradewinds Island Resorts on St. Pete Beach property, with its floating ocean water park, or the long-standing family favorite, Dolphin Beach Resort. Head to Spinners Rooftop Grille atop Bellwether Beach Resort for panoramic views and delicious seafood, chops and steak. At the rear of Sirata Beach Resort, Harry’s Beach Bar serves up burgers and wings with fabulous beach views. In the Blind Pass area, stop in at Woody’s Waterfront Café and Beach Bar for fresh seafood, thirst-quenching frozen drinks and unbeatable Gulf views. For nightlife, there are many choices, but one not-to-miss is Jimmy B’s Beach Bar at the Beachcomber for high quality eats and drinks in an open-air atmosphere with live music day and night.

Celebrating Disney’s extraordinary legacy in the art of animation, Cirque du Soleil’s “Drawn to Life” opened at Disney Springs last November, bringing some extra magic to the Walt Disney World Resort. The first-ever theatrical collaboration from Cirque du Soleil, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering, “Drawn to Life” features Disney characters and music throughout the 90-minute production. It tells the story of a courageous 12-year-old named Julie, who discovers a letter left by her late animator father urging her to complete a drawing he left unfinished. From his cluttered desk, Julie is suddenly whisked through a vortex into a world of wonder where comforts of her childhood have come alive and beloved Disney characters serve as her guides. “It was not an easy choice

Dry Tortugas National Park is a sparkling marine gem in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico and a must-see destination while visiting Key West. Home to turquoise blue waters, abundant sea life, tropical bird breeding grounds, colorful coral reefs and magnificent Fort Jefferson, this remote national park is like no other place on earth. Located 70 miles west of Key West, this 100-square mile park of mostly open water also protects seven breathtaking islands, offering one of the world’s most unique eco-attractions.

Prepare for a breathtaking journey with Key West Seaplane Adventures

In addition to its renowned marine landscape, Dry Tortugas National Park is home to the massive 19th century Fort Jefferson, where guests can step back in time and savor the legends of pirates, shipwrecks and sunken treasure. Visitors can download a self-guided tour of Fort Jefferson to print out or view on cellphones or tablets. Dry Tortugas National Park offers some of the best snorkeling in North America. shores of a brilliant white sand beach, everyone from beginner to expert can enjoy an abundance of colorful tropical fish and living coral. To preserve its sheer unspoiled beauty, Dry Tortugas National Park is only accessible by boat or seaplane. The official Dry Tortugas National Park Ferry is The Yankee Freedom, a spacious highspeed catamaran with an air-conditioned cabin and an expansive deck for sunning or spotting marine life such as turtles and dolphins in their natural habitat. Leaving promptly at 8 a.m., The Yankee Freedom includes breakfast, lunch, snorkel gear and a 45– minute narrated tour of historic Fort Jefferson. Additionally, the vessel docks for the day at the fort so passengers can come back to cool off, eat lunch and relax if they so choose.

Key West Seaplane Adventures, offering scenic half day and full day excursions, is the only seaplane service permitted in Dry Tortugas National Park. Departing in the morning and afternoon, travel time is approximately 40 minutes each way. Complimentary snorkel equipment is supplied, or passengers can bring their own gear. Prepare for a breathtaking journey! Due to extreme popularity, reserving both The Yankee Freedom (drytortugas.com) and Key West Seaplane Adventures (keywestseaplanecharters.com) well in advance is advised. Additionally, sushi is available Wednesday through Sunday evening, and breakfast is served daily. hendersonbeachresort.com

For a more relaxed dining experience, Rick’s on the Island boasts great views of the Intracoastal Waterway. The Okaloosa Island eatery is known for its fresh seafood, like the VERY Gouda grilled oysters topped with smoked Gouda and bacon, and will even cook a guest’s own fresh catch. Women in Aviation Network Group We empower our Team Members to create Network Groups that resonate with and mean something personal and impactful to them. These Network Groups work with our Diversity & Inclusion Council and advance the visibility of Team Members, while also increasing awareness and encouraging a sense of belonging for all. For Women’s History Month in March 2022, our Women in Aviation Network Group hosted a series of events and programming engaging Team Members from across the system. These events were created to encourage them to take time to learn more about the successes and struggles of females in a maledominated industry. Throughout the month, we featured a variety of leaders both internally and on our @allegiant Instagram, who have collectively spent more than 30 years with Allegiant. By showcasing our operational groups, it was great to celebrate the impact our own leaders have made on the organization, including the

challenges they have overcome. Members of the Network Group expressed a need for additional training and resources to manage their work-life balance, especially amidst the pandemic. We collaborated with an expert partner to provide a free webinar encouraging confidence in establishing boundaries between James work Kawashima, and home. General Manager (LAX)

Last but certainly not least, the Network Group hosted the first ever fireside chat with 5 directors and above across a variety of departments. It was an inspiring hour to learn about the rewards and benefits, but also the risks and challenges, of not only being a female leader but also being one in a male dominated industry. Long term, all of our Network Groups, in collaboration with the Council, Corporate Giving and Talent Acquisition teams, will continue to advocate and promote making aviation careers accessible for as many individuals as possible.
