(NOT SO) BAD TO THE BONE

‘The Bad Guys’ proves you should never judge a book by its cover

By Heather Turk

Based on the New York Times best-selling children’s book series by Aaron Blabey (who also served as an executive producer on the film), DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys” releases in theaters April 22. The action-packed comedy features an all-star voice cast that includes Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) as the dashing pickpocket, Mr. Wolf; Marc Maron (“GLOW”) as the seen-it-all safecracker, Mr. Snake;

Craig Robinson (“The Office”) as the cool master of disguise, Mr. Shark; Anthony Ramos (“In the Heights”) as the short-fused muscle, Mr. Piranha; and Golden Globe winner Awkwafina (“The Farewell”) as the sharp-tongued expert hacker, Ms. Tarantula. Viewers follow the crackerjack criminal crew of animal outlaws as they attempt their most challenging con yet: becoming model citizens. Sunseeker caught Continued on page 8 up with animatorSUNSEEKER

turned-first-time feature film director Pierre Perifel (“Kung Fu Panda”) and producers Damon Ross (“Nacho Libre”) and Rebecca Huntley (“The Boss Baby”) to talk about the hilarious and heartfelt heist film, which is sure to resonate with audiences of all ages. For those unfamiliar with the Scholastic book series, what is “The Bad Guys” about? Perifel: It’s the story of these five animals that we’re all afraid of, and because we categorize them as bad, they never really had a chance to be anything else. One day, Mr. Wolf — who is the leader of the gang — decides that he wants to change his life and become a good guy. The problem is that they’re really, really bad at being good and really good at being bad. So, it’s the journey of these five guys trying to become accepted and heroes, basically. It was the perfect book to adapt because it had so much potential. Is the film’s plot based on one of the graphic novels, or is it an entirely new story? Huntley: The movie has elements of the first few books and then we were able to infuse it with additional ideas of our own. Hopefully, it’s a really nice blend. People who are familiar with the books can see elements that they recognize, but then it also has a fresh take on other aspects of the plot. How involved was Aaron Blabey during the production of the film? Ross: Aaron was involved quite a bit, especially in the early stages as we were cooking up the plot for the movie. I’ve worked on a lot of high-profile book-to-film adaptations, and having your author onboard and enthusiastic about the process really helps to lend the movie additional integrity and authenticity — especially with the fan base of the books. It’s also great when the author gives you liberty to stray from the books now and again in order to make the best possible movie experience,

and that is something Aaron encouraged us to do to from the very beginning. Did any heist movies like “Ocean’s Eleven” make you want to work on a film like this? Ross: I love the heist genre and the “Ocean’s” franchise was a big influence, for sure. I love stories that have twists and turns and cons on top of other cons, but I also love [Quentin] Tarantino’s movies and Edgar Wright’s films. The whole crime caper genre was just so appealing and ripe for animation because it hadn’t been done before. This idea of being a family gateway to that genre was a big part of what got me turned on to the books in the first place. But I also always remind people that this is a makeover story, and for me that’s a whole other genre that we had fun exploring. We spent a lot of time watching “My Fair Lady” and “Trading Places.” Like all of DreamWorks’ animated features, “The Bad Guys” has a great cast attached to it. Who were you the most excited to see sign on to the film? Ross: It’s a tough question. They are all so talented and amazing in their performances. I’d say the one I was most excited about was getting Sam Rockwell attached to the movie. He’s the first actor we went to, and when he said yes it gave us this boost of confidence. We knew we had something super special and it gave us this great momentum. The rest of the cast pretty much fell into place because everybody wants to work with Sam Rockwell. He’s an actor’s actor. He’s just incredibly generous and such a joy to work with. DreamWorks is known for creating animated characters loved by generations, like Shrek, Toothless (“How to Train Your Dragon”) and Po (“Kung Fu Panda”). What makes the cast of characters in “The Bad Guys” worthy of being a part of DreamWorks’ animated legacy? Huntley: I would say our cast is worthy of being part of the DreamWorks legacy because they’re characters you care deeply about. These characters are bad guys. They’ve been judged in a negative way, but then you see that they have these wonderful qualities that cause us to change our opinion of them for the better. You root for them to succeed and at the end of the day, I feel like they give us hope. I think we see that in [DreamWorks Animation’s] legacy characters — that they are all characters who are either misjudged or misunderstood and you root for them. What message do you hope viewers take away from the film? Perifel: To me, it’s really all about your actions are what define you and not what you look like. It’s a very social message that’s quite relevant these days — it’s always been relevant.

Foodies hungry to try someplace new on the Las Vegas Strip will discover several recent restaurant additions to delight one’s senses.

Named after the resort’s founders, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel and Meyer Lansky, Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse at Flamingo Las Vegas is one of the Strip’s most delectable new restaurants. The vintage steakhouse features several unique design elements, including a bakery façade that guests enter through and a hidden speakeasy. Steak aficionados can dine on a variety of perfectly seasoned steaks slightly charred in a 1,200-degree broiler, like the tender 8-ounce Prime Rib Cap, and enjoy their selection with a build-yourown Old Fashioned. The steakhouse also serves some of the best side dishes in town, like the tasty Truffle Potato Purée. caesars.com/flamingo-las-vegas/ restaurants/bugsy-and-meyers Michelin-starred chef Shaun Hergatt’s Caviar Bar at Resorts World Las Vegas offers guests another impeccable new dining experience on the Strip. The exquisite eatery offers several non-seafood dishes, too, such as the juicy Jidori Chicken served in a goat cheese fine herb sauce. caviarbarlv.com The first West Coast location of ESPN’s No. 1 sports bar in North America, Chickie’s & Pete’s Crab House and Sports Bar, has also generated a lot of fanfare since opening inside SAHARA Las Vegas. Lisa Vanderpump is quickly becoming the toast of the town with not one, but two exquisite cocktail lounges on the Las Vegas Strip. “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star opened her first Las Vegas venue, Vanderpump Cocktail Garden, inside Caesars Palace in March 2019. The striking 160-seat lounge boasts a beautiful indoor patio with an alfresco-style garden, complete with towering trees and romantic lighting. Guests can sip a selection from the carefully curated wine list, which includes several Vanderpump wines, or order a handcrafted cocktail — like the sweet Please Her, Caesar! made with Vanderpump Vodka, rosé champagne, blackberry, elderflower, lemon and aquafaba — while savoring a variety of sumptuous small plates. Favorites include the flavorful Manchego Stuffed Bacon Wrapped Dates, the succulent pistachio-herb chimichurri Grilled Steak Skewers and the heavenly Vanderpump Rosé Cake for two layered with strawberry buttercream. Given Vanderpump Cocktail

Garden’s instant success, it was only a matter of time before the British restaurateur opened a second Strip venue. Transporting guests to the City of Light, Vanderpump à Paris opened this past winter inside Paris Las Vegas. Like its sister lounge, Vanderpump à Paris features a menu of delectable dishes and unique cocktails that guests can enjoy in a lush, elaborate atmosphere. The Parisian-inspired space features approximately 200 seats, ornate awnings, signature light fixtures, impressive statues and bespoke furniture from Vanderpump and designer Nick Alain’s celebrated design line, Vanderpump Alain. Vino enthusiasts can imbibe a variety of wines from France during their visit, as well as Vanderpump’s signature branded rosé, Chardonnay and Cabernet. Fans of Lisa Vanderpump (and cocktail connoisseurs in general) will definitely want to check out both luxe lounges during their trip to Las Vegas, as each location offers guests an unforgettable — and Instagrammable — experience that lives up to the “Vanderpump Rules” star’s discerning taste. caesars.com

A CELEBRATION OF LIFE

Donny Osmond returns to the Las Vegas stage with an all-new residency

By Heather Turk

After 11 years of performing alongside his sister Marie at Flamingo Las Vegas, Donny Osmond launched his firstever solo residency at Harrah’s Las Vegas last August. A musical journey that takes fans through the entertainer’s illustrious career, Osmond joked that the intimate production took 60 years to put together.

Photos by Denise Truscello

“The concept of the show is completely different than the silliness and the comedy that people expected with Donny & Marie,” Osmond told Sunseeker. “This show gives me the opportunity to showcase everything that I’ve done musically and otherwise: the highs and the lows. It’s not just a show where there’s eye candy; there’s some heart and soul to it.” Osmond spent “countless hours” figuring out the show’s set list, which features everything from his signature single, “Puppy Love,” to a show-stopping performance of “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Disney’s “Mulan.” While naturally Osmond can’t sing every song he’s ever performed during the production, the set list does change nightly thanks to a request segment Osmond does with his fans. As images of all 65 albums he’s recorded are shown on the video screen behind him, Osmond asks select audience members to pick their favorite album. He then asks them to choose any song from that album and performs 15 to 20 seconds of it — at least to the best of his memory.

Donny Osmond’s new residency was choreographed by Emmy Award-winning duo Nappytabs (“So You Think You Can Dance”)

Osmond admitted that “Puppy Love” is actually one of his favorite numbers to perform

Osmond noted that it was “worth all the blood, sweat and tears” it took to create the show during the COVID-19 pandemic to “take people away from the world of trouble that we’re going through for 90 minutes”

“There have been several times where I couldn’t remember part of a song,” Osmond admitted. “I would just say, ‘I don’t know the rest of this song. Let’s just listen to it,’ and everybody would start laughing.” Osmond also does his best to cover his career in an “auto-rap-ography.” As Osmond performs the impressive rap, which took five months to write and three months to learn, archived photos and videos that “would have never seen the light of day” otherwise are shown on the showroom’s screens to accompany the lyrics.

The audience request segment makes Osmond’s solo residency different each night

“Originally, the rap was called ‘Six in Six: Six Decades in Six Minutes,’” Osmond recalled. “But as Keith (Harrison, Osmond’s music director) started writing the thing and I started flooding him with material, he said, ‘There’s no way to fit this into six minutes.’ So, it turned into a 10-minute song.”

“Every night I hear, ‘I just can’t believe how much you’ve done in your life,’” Osmond stated. “The other night, during the personal preshow I do, this one lady asked, ‘Why do you keep doing this?’ The simple answer is I love what I do. If you lived in my shoes — particularly for those 90 minutes onstage and you looked at how much fun the audience is having reliving my entire life that they’ve been a part of — then you’d understand why I keep working so hard. It’s euphoric for me and it’s fun for the audience, and isn’t that what entertainment is all about?” harrahslasvegas.com 24

Osmond said he wanted everyone — from 8-year-olds to 70-year-olds — to be able to relive certain moments from their lives while watching the show

Osmond said that he knew he wanted to pay tribute to his sister Marie during his show because he “wouldn’t be at Harrah’s if it weren’t for her”

If there’s one thing that even the biggest Donny Osmond fan will leave the show being surprised by, it’s just how much the versatile performer has accomplished.

Where to tickle your funny bone on the Las Vegas strip

By Heather Turk

If there’s one thing everyone could use more of these days, it’s a good hearty laugh. Luckily, Las Vegas doesn’t joke around when it comes to its comedy scene. The city is home to several places that regularly feature some of the funniest acts in the business — especially on the Strip, where there’s never a shortage of laughter to be found.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” star Brad Garrett often performs inside his namesake comedy club (Pictured above)

One of the Strip’s top comedy clubs recently moved into a beautiful new space. Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club relocated within MGM Grand last November, and can now be found in The District near MGM Grand Garden Arena. Like the club’s original 250-seat location in The Underground, the newly redesigned club features fantastic artwork of iconic comedians on the walls, like Steve Martin and George Carlin, as well as a few pieces that pay tribute to “Everybody Loves Raymond.” The intimate 210-seat venue even has an old-school Las Vegas lounge adjacent to it that features live music by talented jazz musicians several nights a week. Audiences can see three hilarious comedians performing at the club each night, with Garrett typically hosting at least one performance every month. Consider yourself forewarned: if you sit in the first two rows when Garrett’s in town, you’ll likely become a part of his uninhibited act! bradgarrettcomedy.com Continued on page 28 Fans can catch Sebastian Maniscalco’s Nobody Does This Tour at 7 and 10 p.m. each night the comedian performs at Wynn Las Vegas

“The Beatles LOVE” by Cirque du Soleil resumed performances on Aug. 26, 2021

COME TOGETHER

The Cast of “Love” gets back into the groove to wow audiences

By Heather Turk

Celebrating her 13th anniversary with Cirque du Soleil in April, dancer Laura Cota admitted she wasn’t familiar with “The Beatles LOVE” when she first auditioned for the entertainment company. “As soon as I found out that their shows were expanding into hiring dancers, it was a no-brainer,” Cota, who previously worked for Tokyo Disney Resort and Norwegian Cruise Line, recalled. “I was like, ‘I need to be working for that company!’ I was actually asked to do two other shows that fell through before I was asked to do ‘LOVE.’ I really couldn’t have been placed in a better show for myself, though. It was meant to be.” Following a 17-month intermission, “The Beatles LOVE” danced its way back into The Mirage last August. One of five Cirque du Soleil productions currently playing on the Strip (the others being “O” inside Bellagio, “Mystère” inside Treasure Island, “Michael Jackson ONE” inside Mandalay Bay and “KÀ” inside MGM Grand), “The Beatles LOVE” celebrates the musical legacy of one of the greatest rock 30

bands of all time. Cota is one of 14 ensemble dancers typically featured in the production, who perform five full dance acts each night plus a couple of smaller numbers depending on which dance track they’ve been assigned. Some nights Cota may be a dancing jellyfish in “Octopus’s Garden,” while others she’s one of four girls soaring 100 feet in the air for “Something.” “That’s one of my favorite Beatles songs and also my favorite act that I do in the show ’cause I get to fly during the number,” Cota said of the aerial routine. “It’s so much fun. It really makes me feel like I’m in the circus.” Cota isn’t the only person who gets to experience something new at “LOVE” almost every performance. The visual spectacle constantly gives repeat ticket

True to its name, Cota described “LOVE” as “a very positive experience” for anyone watching the production

“When you have a stage that’s in the round, you can just switch your seat the next day and it’s like you’re seeing a completely new show,” Cota noted. “That’s the beauty of our show. Even me, if I sit after this many years and watch it somewhere else, I’m like, ‘Oh, wow! I haven’t seen that before!’ So as an audience member, you’ll always notice something different coming back.” Cota knows that she’s “very lucky” to be doing her dream job for so long and credits the talented cast and crew she works with — not to mention The Beatles’ timeless music — with “LOVE’s” continued success. “My favorite part of the job is getting to see how many different kinds of talent can come together to form such a magical, magical performance,” Cota said. “Between the people who work in lighting and the people who work in props, plus the people in video, dance and acrobatics — just all of these people who are so talented in different areas — we all come together so nicely to put together such a magical show.” cirquedusoleil.com/love

Cota said that performing for 2,000 people a night is a “rush like no other”

AN ENLIGHTENING EVOLUTION

THE NEON MUSEUM CONTINUES TO SHINE A LIGHT ON LAS VEGAS’ HISTORY

By Heather Turk

The Moulin Rouge sign was re-illuminated in 2020

One of Las Vegas’ most illuminating attractions continues to dazzle guests with exciting new enhancements as it gets ready to celebrate its 10th anniversary at its current location this fall. Founded in 1996 as a way to collect, preserve, study and exhibit some of the city’s iconic signs for educational, historic, arts and cultural enrichment, The Neon Museum is situated on a 2.27-acre campus in downtown Las Vegas. Guests can schedule a self-guided tour of its outdoor exhibition space, the Neon Boneyard, during the day to see the museum’s ever-growing collection of signs, including four by Tim Burton that remained on display after the filmmaker’s special exhibition concluded at the museum in 2020. Additionally, guided tours are available at night to see the collection dramatically lit up — including nearly two dozen re-illuminated signs — and learn more about the history of certain pieces. While docent-

led tours were previously only offered in English, Spanish tours were added in 2021 every Thursday through Saturday evening. The museum is hoping to add guided tours in Asian languages soon, as well as additional programs to broaden its educational experience. “I hope to launch a program that enables visitors to see neon being made so they can better appreciate the complexities of the craft,” Aaron Berger, executive director of The Neon Museum, explained. “We also plan to launch new tours in 2022 that focus on specific historical angles as told through our collection, like the experiences of the Black, LGBTQ and Hispanic communities.” A new 808-square-foot mural at The Neon Museum’s recently reimagined North Gallery, “Las Vegas Luminaries,” actually pays tribute to some of the SUNSEEKER

Guided evening tours of the Neon Boneyard are now available in English and Spanish

Guests can learn more about “Brilliant! Jackpot” from its creator, experiential designer Craig Winslow, who virtually greets audiences on a 65-inch monitor to explain how he used precise projection mapping to “re-electrify” 40 non-operational signs. The video is one of two new educational components featured in the North Gallery, joining a docent-led neon testing demonstration that teaches guests about the science behind neon signs. As The Neon Museum continues to present an unparalleled convergence of art and history, Berger hopes guests leave the popular attraction feeling even more enlightened.

Now through June 19, Allegiant passengers can appreciate the colorful glass artwork of Dale Chihuly at two of the Valley’s top attractions, the Desert Botanical Garden and Taliesin West. Time slots for a visit are available during the day, when shifting light adds to the pieces’ beauty, or at night, when they glow among the saguaro and desert plants. Advanced tickets are required.

DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN Eleven glass installations along the garden’s trails plus a gallery inside Dorrance Hall showcase the talent of Chihuly, whose work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide. One of the most popular pieces is “Fiori Boat,” an actual antique boat from Chihuly’s personal collection overflowing with vibrant spheres, curling tails and glass sticks against the backdrop of Papago Buttes. In the gallery, guests can appreciate smaller works, like “Rotolo” with its entwined cylinders, as well as framed drawings. Although viewing the pieces after dark is popular, daytime visits make touring the actual garden possible as well. While visiting during the day, Allegiant passengers can see more than 50,000 cacti and desert plants on the garden’s five trails and learn how people, flora, and fauna survive in the Sonoran Desert. Located in Carlsbad, just 30 miles north of downtown San Diego, LEGOLAND California Resort has added several new attractions over the past few years to entertain kids and kids at heart. In fact, just last May, its 128-acre theme park — LEGOLAND California — welcomed its largest addition ever: THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD. Based on the blockbuster films “The LEGO Movie” and “The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part,” the immersive land transports guests to the LEGO movie universe with six fun attractions. Guests can hop aboard Emmet’s Flying Adventure Ride and feel the sensation of flying above such memorable lands as Middle Zealand and Pirates

No trip to THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD is complete, either, without getting a picture with Emmet in Emmet’s Super Suite. Another recent addition to LEGOLAND California that’s quickly become a family favorite is LEGO CITY: Deep Sea Adventure. The interactive submarine ride invites passengers to search for sunken LEGO treasure as they cruise underwater past a variety of real sea creatures, including stingrays and sharks. Guests with a SEA LIFE Hopper Ticket can see even more incredible marine life inside LEGOLAND California Resort’s SEA LIFE Aquarium, including seahorses, jellyfish and an octopus! This spring, LEGOLAND California will be revving up for the debut of another exciting addition as well: the world’s first LEGO Ferrari Build and Race interactive attraction. TRAVELER INFORMATION SAFETY FIRST Customer safety is Allegiant®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT" from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats
