TWO LOCAL
STUDENTS RECOGNIZED
FOR COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP,
AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP Volunteering is a meaningful way to contribute to the community, and it helped two local students earn a scholarship to put towards their post-secondary educations. Shelby Pierce and Julianne Roe are the 2023 recipients of the Dale MacMillan Memorial Scholarship for Community Leadership, and were each awarded $2,000. Sturgeon County Council presented the awards at the July 18 Council meeting. Shelby is enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts degree program, with a major in Sociology, at the University of Alberta. She works for the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation and is a member of the Sturgeon County Youth Advisory Committee. and aspires to work in counselling, where she can continue to help others. She says it’s an honour to be chosen for an award that has such a strong focus on volunteerism. “I value the time and effort that was given to me by volunteers growing up,” said Shelby. “By giving back that same effort and time, I hope to make an impact on someone else.” Julianne is also studying at the University of Alberta and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition and food science. She has served in numerous volunteer roles through 4H in Bon Accord, Morinville, and
