From the Desk of the President Paige Zutavern | Strictly Business Magazine-Omaha | June 2025
As we turn the page into June, I’m reminded of how summer brings a renewed energy to both life and business. The days get longer, the sun gets warmer, and everything around us feels full of potential. That same momentum is what fuels us at Strictly Business—helping our clients grow their presence, connect with others, and build stronger businesses across Nebraska.
June is also a time of celebration and reflection. We’ve just come off an incredible season of recognizing local excellence through our coverage of the Greater Omaha Chamber’s Business Excellence Awards. It’s been an honor to spotlight so many companies that are not only succeeding but also giving back to their communities, investing in their people, and pushing the boundaries of innovation. If you haven’t taken a moment to congratulate this year’s honorees, I encourage you to do so—they are truly inspiring.
Here at Strictly Business, our mission has never been just about print. It’s about connection. We exist to serve as a bridge—between businesses and consumers, between professionals and partners, between leaders and the community. Whether it's through our magazine, website, or social media platforms, we are committed to helping our clients tell their stories in ways that are authentic, strategic, and—yes—profitable.
One of the most powerful tools we offer is something many
business owners overlook: free content marketing. As you’ll see in this month’s issue, we don’t just sell ad space—we build relationships. Our team helps create editorial content that shines a light on the value you bring to your industry. That content is crafted, published, and promoted at no extra cost for our advertising clients, because we believe in amplifying your voice and positioning you as the expert in your field.
That’s what makes Strictly Business different—and why so many of our advertisers have been with us for 10, 15, even 20+ years. They know the power of consistent visibility. They know that when their brand shows up—month after month— in print and online, it builds trust. And trust, as we all know, is the currency of successful business.
As you flip through this issue, I hope you’re inspired not only by the businesses we feature, but also by the opportunity that exists for you and your team. Whether you're launching something new, expanding your reach, or simply looking to stay top of mind, we’re here to help.
Thank you for continuing to read, support, and contribute to Strictly Business. And if we haven’t had the chance to work together yet—consider this your invitation. Let’s build something great.
Wishing you a successful and sunshine-filled June!
Warmly, Paige Zutavern

THEGreater Omaha Chamber, in partnership with Premier Bank, is proud to recognize businesses that make meaningful contributions to our community. Honorees will be celebrated across key categories including civic engagement, cultural impact, innovation, philanthropy, and the distinguished Business of the Year award. Their commitment plays a vital role in enhancing Greater Omaha as a dynamic place to live, work, and thrive.
Greater Omaha Chamber and Premier Bank are proud to present the 2025 Business Excellence Awards — a celebration of the companies and organizations helping shape a stronger, more connected Greater Omaha. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to All Makes for generously hosting this year’s celebration.
This year’s honorees are recognized across five categories: Civic Engagement, Culture, Innovation, Philanthropy, and Business of the Year. Each represents a unique commitment to elevating our region through visionary leadership, meaningful collaboration, and community investment.
As we navigate a new era of growth and transformation, Greater Omaha’s most inspiring businesses are those that think boldly, act with purpose, and lead with integrity. They champion progress in their organization and have a positive impact on the people of our great community.
Strictly Business is proud to be the Media Sponsor of the Greater Omaha Chamber’s 2025 Business Excellence Awards.
The Civic Engagement Award recognizes organizations that embody civic responsibility—strengthening Omaha through activism and community engagement. They use their resources, expertise, and influence to address social challenges, support local causes, and advocate for change.
Pushing the boundaries of what is possible by introducing something better is no easy process, but true innovators thrive on this. Those recognized for Excellence in Innovation have made innovation part of their everyday ‘routine’ and provide tangible benefits through their work.
Recipients of the Excellence in Culture award exemplify leadership-driven social transformation, emphasizing employee well-being, trust, and a commitment to shared values. They actively cultivate an atmosphere where people feel valued, supported, and inspired to contribute their best work.
Organizations, small and large, with a philosophy of giving back make a significant impact on the Omaha metropolitan community’s health and well-being. Recognition goes to those who go above-and-beyond to foster a spirit of generosity and support.
Our Milestone companies take excellence to a whole other level, sustaining excellence year after year while building a legacy. Each year in business should be celebrated – our milestone honorees are marking significant anniversaries this year.
This business forged its own trail, constantly seeking fresh perspectives and unconventional solutions. Through determination, vision, andexecution, this organization exemplified what it means to excel in business and proved to be the 2024 Business of the Year.

Lucy Lantis, a Workplace Culture and Connection Specialist and founder of Inward Inquiry, is proud to announce the launch of her newest keynote experience for organizations and leadership teams: “How to Kill Connection in 10 Ways: Preventing Patterns that Stunt Workplace Culture.”
This interactive keynote represents the next evolution in Inward Inquiry’s work to help organizations prioritize connection, communication, and culture as foundational elements of success. Designed for conferences, company retreats, professional associations, and leadership development events, the keynote identifies ten critical—and often overlooked—behaviors and patterns that weaken trust, disengage employees, and create cultural stagnation.
Participants are guided through real-time learning activities to identify and shift behaviors that undermine psychological safety, team alignment, and interpersonal accountability.
With years of facilitation experience and a focus on creating safe spaces for exploration and growth, Lantis equips participants with the tools to identify harmful workplace dynamics and develop new patterns that foster inclusion, curiosity, and resilience. Her work through Inward Inquiry helps individuals and organizations break out of reactive cycles and take a more proactive, conscious approach to workplace culture.
Inward Inquiry offers a range of services including keynote speaking, custom team workshops, leadership retreats, and facilitated dialogue experiences. Each engagement is uniquely tailored to meet the needs of the group and encourage lasting transformation—not just surface-level change.
With “How to Kill Connection in 10 Ways,” Lantis is challenging companies to rethink how they engage their people—not just through systems and policies, but through everyday interactions and habits. The keynote is suitable for a wide range of sectors, from corporate and nonprofit to healthcare, education, and small businesses.

Tell us a little about your business (in your own words). - Authentica Group is a business coaching and professional development training company bringing solutions that help business owners, executives, leaders and professionals grow themselves and their businesses.
How did you get started in the business? - In 2020 and 2021, I noticed a shift in myself, and I wasn’t completely sure if the shift was giving back through volunteering or creating something new. In 2022, after spending 30 years in Corporate America, I figured it out. Throughout my entire career, I have always had a deep passion for helping others learn and grow. Tapping into the passion created Authentica Group because I wanted to take my years of experience in training, sales, marketing, and account management and bring the forward to businesses and individuals seeking to grow and prosper.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? My biggest challenge was overcoming the fear of leaving behind something I had worked so hard to build — making the final decision to step away from an industry where I had invested so much of myself, leaving behind the income, and embarking on the journey to reinvent myself. I also faced the challenge of convincing some of those I had worked with that I was capable of more than what they had seen from me in the past. I had to let go of worrying about what others thought and focus on doing what I knew was right in my heart and mind. When you start a business, self-doubt creeps in — and so does doubt from others. I had to let it all go and stay committed to my vision.
What has been your most important achievement professionally?
- Recently, I would have to say, reconnecting to the Omaha Business community. I worked the majority of my 30-year career outside of Omaha. I lived in Omaha but worked in different states, so I was extremely disconnected. For me to grow my business, I needed to find a way to reconnect, get closer to what this great city has to offer, and find my way. I did this through a very disciplined networking strategy. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Oh, my goodness, this one is hard because there are many turning points in your life, school, sports, work, family, birth, death, etc. But if I must pick one…I would have to say the birth of my children. They amaze me every day. And I consider myself so lucky to be called mom.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? There were two decisions in my life that had the biggest impact of the trajectory my life took – one was the decision to attend Creighton University, which remains the best decision I’ve ever made. It opened up a world to me in so many ways – education, friends, exposure to new things – that I never would have experienced as a girl from a small Nebraska town. The other decision was moving to Washington DC at age 29 to work on Capitol Hill. It was another experience of expanding what I thought life could be, with the added bonus of meeting my future husband.

Mike Obst HUFFMAN ENGINEERING
Mike Obst is the Client Manager at Huffman Engineering, Inc., Omaha and is responsible for business development in the region.
Tell us a little about your business (in your own words). - Huffman Engineering Inc. (HEI) is an Engineering firm that specializes in systems integration. The best thing about it is we work in a lot of different industries, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and water/wastewater. I like to say if you’ve had a drink of water or flushed a toilet in Omaha and expected clean water to eventually be returned to the River or if you’ve had a headache and tried to make it go away with a popular medicine, we’ve likely had a hand in controlling the process to make that happen.
How did you get started in the business? - I was in the software development industry for 25 years where the 3D modeling software exported data to controlled automation equipment. I have always been fascinated with how automation can improve safety and product production so I made a career change from the software development industry to control systems integration. The speed and accuracy of some of the automated manufacturing equipment is incredible, all controlled by a SCADA touchscreen.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?Technology drives new solutions every day. Staying educated on existing technologies while learning how to leverage new ones can be challenging. The good thing about working at HEI is their focus on professional development and support of their employees constantly learning – so honestly it makes it fun.
Tell us a little about your family. - I have been married to my wife Amy for 31 years. We have lived in Omaha, Elkhorn, Valley, and now Lincoln, and I find myself once again working in Omaha. Recently, we adopted two girls who are both in high school. That means I’m learning lessons of how to shop and hopefully picking up a few fashion tips along the way.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - When I get a day off, I enjoy riding ATV’s and hanging out with friends and family. I also enjoy working on house projects. The fashion tips don’t end at the mall shopping, the fashion tips continue at home with accent walls, pretty wall colors and colored led accent lighting.
Who inspires you? - I have several people who inspire me. One of my favorites is Simon Sinek. I love his simple, well communicated approach. I’m an optimistic person. When I combine his short and powerful messages with some of my optimism, I am certainly inspired and energized. On a day to day basis, I have several colleagues at Huffman Engineering who inspire me. I’m fascinated by the engineers, project managers, and automation technicians who surround me each day, every one of them bringing their specializations to some really complex projects. It’s really gratifying to know that the communities we live and work in are in such good hands with these industrial systems like power grids, water utilities and companies that make medicines and equipment we use every day.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Growing up in the 80’s, one of my favorite fun quotes came from the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day off where Ferris said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” I loved that quote back then and it has even more meaning as we all get older and experience that statement.

Mark your calendar for the 4th Annual Team Jack Golf Classic, presented by Omaha Steaks! Join us on Monday, June 23 at Tiburon Golf Club in Omaha for a meaningful day on the course, with all proceeds supporting childhood brain cancer research. Each corporate team will be joined by a former Nebraska Football player to form a five-person team, making for a memorable and impactful experience.
The tournament was launched in 2022 by former Nebraska Football players Rex Burkhead, Jeremiah Sirles, Brent Qvale, and Kenny Bell, longtime supporters of the Team Jack Foundation. Their connection to the cause dates back to their college days, when young Jack Hoffman captured hearts with his unforgettable 69-yard touchdown run during the 2013 Nebraska Football Spring Game. These players remain dedicated to growing the event year after year.
Nebraska has the seventh-highest rate of childhood brain cancer in the United States, with only six states, all located in the eastern U.S. ranking higher. The state also ranks among the highest in childhood brain cancer mortality rates. While we are proud to support groundbreaking research efforts around the world, we are equally dedicated to advancing the Nebraska Childhood Brain Tumor Program at UNMC and Children’s Nebraska. Every child in our region deserves the highest standard of care, and the proceeds from the annual Team Jack Golf Classic are helping to make that a reality.

EPIC for Girls, a local nonprofit empowering girls of color through sports, hosted an interactive event featuring players from the Omaha Supernovas on Wednesday, April 30, at Hurrdat Sports Bar & Grill in La Vista. The event welcomed nearly 100 girls currently involved in EPIC’s programs.
Thanks to support from Hurrdat and Hightower Reff Law, attendees will have the chance to meet and engage with professional volleyball players from the Supernovas, Omaha’s Pro Volleyball Federation team, which made headlines in 2024 by setting a women’s professional volleyball attendance record at CHI Health Center.
“At Hightower Reff Law and through my work on the board with EPIC for Girls, we are committed to lifting up the next generation of leaders both on and off the court,” said Tara Wrighton, attorney at Hightower Reff Law and EPIC board member. “Events like this create real opportunities for young girls to connect with role models who show them that their dreams are within reach.”
Interactive stations at the event allowed the girls to take selfies with the athletes, record TikTok videos, conduct “tiny mic” interviews, and enjoy food, games, and other engaging activities designed to spark authentic connections.
“This event is about creating powerful moments where girls see real-life examples of what’s possible for them,” said Raquel Henderson, Director of Strategic Programs at EPIC for Girls. “When young athletes meet inspiring role models, it ignites confidence and ambition in ways that last a lifetime.”
The Supernovas, Nebraska’s first major women’s professional volleyball team, have quickly become a point of pride in the local sports scene, drawing thousands of fans and national attention to Omaha. Their community outreach efforts mirror EPIC for Girls’ mission of fostering access, opportunity and visibility for girls in athletics.
EPIC for Girls works year-round to break down barriers in sports participation by funding programs, supporting diverse coaching staffs, and building sports environments where every girl can thrive.

High priority summer items include: sunscreen, aloe, bug spray, hygiene wipes, full-sized body wash, as well as shampoo and conditioner for colored hair, summer clothing (short-sleeved shirts in all sizes), bottled water, canned goods, non-perishable food items, and more.

Nebraska ranks #1 of the 12 Midwestern states in incidence of pediatric cancer per capita. Nearly 90 families are told “your child has cancer” in Nebraska each year. No family plans for a pediatric cancer diagnosis. Life seems to stop, but expenses don’t. That’s where Angels Among Us steps in.
Angels Among Us’ mission is to provide financial and emotional support to pediatric cancer families living in or being treated in Nebraska. AAU makes critical bill payments on behalf of families directly to creditors. These bills may be rent, mortgage, utilities, car payments, and more to alleviate the financial burden brought on by pediatric cancer. In 2024, AAU financially assisted 127 families with over $700,000 in critical bill payments.
Financial situations change overnight with a pediatric cancer diagnosis, oftentimes forcing one or more parents to leave their job. Nearly 80% of bills paid by AAU are rent and mortgage to keep families in their homes and focused on what matters – their sick child.
“You already have the emotional toll of your child being sick,” one pediatric cancer mom shares. “You just want to be able to bring them home.”
Since 2006, Angels Among Us has supported nearly 800 families with over $5 million in financial support. If you are interested in learning more about AAU’s mission or how you can support, please contact Ashley McMurchie at ashley@myangelsamongus.org or by calling 402-934-0999.

This spring, the American Red Cross urges individuals to give lifesaving blood or platelets as seasonal travel ramps up. The impact of busy spring and summer calendars comes on the heels of an incredibly challenging winter, during which tens of thousands of blood products went uncollected across the county due to weather. With upcoming holiday celebrations and record-breaking travel expected in the coming weeks, donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with type O blood and those giving platelets.
Blood has a shelf life of only 42 days. With no substitute for blood and no way to manufacture it, volunteer donors are essential to patient care. Busy calendars can disrupt normal giving patterns, but the need for blood is constant.
All who come to give May 19-31 will get an exclusive Red Cross solar lantern, while supplies last. PLUS, get a chance to win a U.S. trip of choice for you and a guest! Come to give blood in June and get a $15 Amazon.com Gift Card by email. PLUS, get a chance to win a $7,000 prize! There will be two winners.
Book a time to give blood or platelets now by visiting RedCrossBlood. org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App.

Nebraska Diaper Bank has launched The Village, a monthly giving circle created to provide consistent, sustainable support for families in need of diapers across the state.
Diapers are a basic need, yet 1 in 3 families in Nebraska struggle to afford enough. Nebraska Diaper Bank currently distributes 300,000 diapers every month to over 5,000 children through community partners – but the need keeps growing.
We’ve all heard the saying, “It takes a village.” At Nebraska Diaper Bank, we believe that includes YOU. Each monthly gift helps ensure a steady supply of diapers, so families don’t have to choose between buying diapers and paying for food or rent. Just $18 per month ensures that one child in our community has enough diapers to stay clean, dry, and healthy.
“Our monthly donors are the heart of this mission,” said Anna Lehotyak, Development Director of Nebraska Diaper Bank. “The Village gives people a meaningful way to show up for local families all year long.”
Already, The Village helps diaper over 130 babies each month. The goal is to reach 150 by the end of this month — and the community’s support can help get there.

Tomorrow kicks off the beginning of the 2025 Step-Up Omaha program, continuing its 17-year tradition of equipping Omaha’s youth with meaningful summer employment experiences. With over 1,700 applicants, and roughly 700 youth and young adults participating, there is still time for local businesses and organizations to fulfill a much needed role as an employer site participant. Step-Up addresses the urgent need for early workforce development, particularly in highpoverty areas of Omaha.
The program will kick off with roughly 100 employer sites participating. Each site represents a range of industries—from healthcare and construction to tech and nonprofits. Employers consistently report a high return on investment. In 2024, 100% of employers who participated expressed willingness to partner again, citing excellent teamwork, professionalism, and growth among interns.
By hosting youth interns, employers receive more than temporary support—they play an active role in building Omaha’s future workforce, addressing equity gaps, and supporting career readiness for youth aged 14 to 21. Step-Up Omaha also provides coaching support to participants and ensures that employers are matched with prepared and motivated interns.
As a community initiative, Step-Up Omaha is organized by Empowerment Network and supported by a network of funders and employers, including, the American National Bank, Charles E. Lakin Foundation, CHI Health, City of Omaha, Cox Communications, Google, Mutual of Omaha, Nebraska Department of Economic Development and United Way of the Midlands. Additionally, Step-Up partners with the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, a program that seeks to positively shift outcomes for boys and young men of color through the implementation of evidence-based practices.

In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, commercial remodeling has transcended the realm of aesthetics to become a critical component of strategic planning and organizational success. No longer just about giving a building a facelift, commercial remodeling now serves as a foundational investment in productivity, energy efficiency, workforce well-being, and long-term scalability. Companies across industries are recognizing that the physical environments in which they operate play a vital role in their ability to adapt, compete, and thrive.
Ultimately, the success of any commercial remodeling project hinges on strategic vision, thoughtful planning, and skilled execution. It requires collaboration between architects, engineers, contractors, and business stakeholders to ensure that the final outcome not only meets present requirements but also positions the organization for future success.
As commercial buildings continue to age and the demand for smarter, more efficient, and adaptable workspaces increases, the importance of experienced and forward-thinking remodeling partners cannot
be overstated. These professionals bring the expertise needed to navigate complex challenges, implement innovative solutions, and deliver transformative results. In this new era of commercial design, the right remodeling approach doesn’t just refresh a space—it fundamentally redefines how businesses operate, grow, and succeed within it.
A leader in integrated building automation, Engineered Controls delivers cost-effective solutions that help building owners and facility managers gain complete control over their systems — from HVAC and lighting to safety and energy management.
“We’re helping clients move from reactive maintenance to proactive, data-driven building management,” says owner Pat Killeen. “Our platforms enable your systems to communicate, which means fewer surprises, better energy performance, and a more secure, productive
Energy is often the largest line item in a building’s operational budget — and yet, studies show up to 30% is used inefficiently. That wasted energy isn’t just a cost issue — it’s a missed opportunity for sustainability and long-term savings.
During any remodeling or retrofitting process, Engineered Controls works alongside contractors and project managers to incorporate smart energy solutions early on. From intelligent sensors and automated schedules to full building system integration, their approach ensures every element of your facility works together seamlessly.
A cornerstone of their offering is the Energy and Environmental Optimization (EEO) program, staffed by certified professionals trained to evaluate, diagnose, and optimize building performance.
“Our EEO team conducts detailed energy assessments and creates tailored strategies based on your building’s current performance and future goals,” Pat explains. “Then we automate those solutions — saving you time, money, and energy.”
The EEO program identifies underperforming systems, streamlines energy usage, and speeds up the deployment of conservation measures — all while ensuring your building remains compliant with evolving regulations.
With deep industry experience and a broad portfolio of cutting-edge products, Engineered Controls is more than a vendor — they’re a long-term partner. From initial planning to system deployment and ongoing support, they help clients stay ahead of energy trends, unlock rebates and incentives, and future-proof their buildings.
“When choosing a partner for energy-focused remodeling, look for one who understands the entire building ecosystem,” Pat advises. “At Engineered Controls, we build custom plans that prioritize cost savings, energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and long-term value.”
As the commercial remodeling industry shifts toward smarter, more efficient buildings, Control Depot stands out as a leader in providing the technology and expertise that modern businesses need. In the ever-evolving world of commercial construction, adaptability, innovation, and trust are more important than ever. Cheever Construction, based in Lincoln, Nebraska, exemplifies all three. Proudly employee-owned since its founding in 1954, Cheever Construction continues to lead the way in both new construction and commercial remodeling, serving a diverse range of clients across Medical, Office, Educational (K-12), and Religious sectors.
While many construction firms focus on one specific niche, Cheever takes a broader approach, offering deep experience across a range of project types. This versatility has made them a reliable partner for clients with unique and complex needs. Whether it’s building a new medical clinic equipped with the latest healthcare technology, transforming an outdated school into a flexible learning environment, or restoring a historic church with modern amenities while preserving its character, Cheever delivers thoughtful, high-quality results.
This adaptability is a direct reflection of the company’s commitment to meeting clients where they are and helping them realize their vision—no matter the size or scope of the project. With every job, Cheever brings the same level of detail-oriented craftsmanship, budget discipline, and project transparency that have defined the firm for over 70 years.
One of Cheever Construction’s greatest strengths is its employeeowned structure. This model creates a culture where every employee, from the project manager to the site superintendent, acts with the mindset of an owner. It means every project is personal. Every success is shared. And every challenge is tackled with a collective sense of responsibility.
Even with strong leadership and advanced tools, the heart of any construction company is its people—and that’s where Cheever is also facing a challenge shared across the industry: workforce sustainability. As many seasoned professionals near retirement, attracting and developing a new generation of skilled workers has become a top priority.
As Cheever continues to evolve alongside the industry, one thing remains unchanged: their commitment to building more than structures. They build trust, relationships, and community—one project at a time.
As we conclude this deep dive into the world of commercial remodeling, one undeniable truth stands out: no successful remodeling project happens in isolation. While vision, creativity, and business strategy lay the groundwork, it is the construction company — the team of experts that brings concepts into reality — that serves as the cornerstone of any commercial remodeling endeavor. Their experience, precision, and leadership are not just important — they are essential.
In the end, it’s not just about transforming square footage — it’s about transforming potential. And that transformation is only possible with a construction partner who’s equipped, experienced, and committed to getting it right.

As people live longer, healthier lives than ever before, the conversation around aging is undergoing a powerful shift. Senior years are now seen as a time of possibility—a chance to stay active, maintain independence, and enjoy a meaningful, purpose-driven lifestyle. But achieving this vision of aging well doesn’t happen by chance. It requires a proactive, holistic approach to health that addresses the full spectrum of a person’s well-being: physical, mental, emotional, and social.
Senior health is about more than just managing chronic conditions or scheduling doctor visits. It’s about fostering environments that support movement, good nutrition, mental stimulation, community connection, and emotional fulfillment. Whether a senior lives at home, in an assisted living community, or is navigating the complexities of memory care, the need for personalized, compassionate support remains the same.
In communities across the country—and especially in places like Omaha—organizations and care providers are stepping up to meet these evolving needs with innovative programs, individualized care plans, and wellness-centered philosophies. They recognize that every senior is unique, with different goals, preferences, and challenges. As a result, today’s senior care landscape is becoming more dynamic, more empowering, and more focused on quality of life than ever before.
There are many ways seniors can maintain their health and vitality, from daily habits to supportive care systems. These organizations are leading the way in senior wellness, showing what’s possible when aging is met not with resignation, but with respect, purpose, and hope. Aging is not a one-size-fits-all journey—and when communities come together to support older adults with the care, dignity, and resources they deserve, the possibilities are truly transformative.

By prioritizing individualized care and emotional connection, Caretech plays an essential role in the broader spectrum of senior health services in Omaha. For families, it provides peace of mind and reassurance that their loved ones are in compassionate, capable hands.
Aging is a deeply human experience—universal, inevitable, and rich with meaning. In the modern world, where people are living longer than ever before, aging has taken on a new dimension. No longer is old age defined solely by limitations or decline; today, many older adults are embracing this stage of life with vitality, purpose, and
resilience. Yet, with this gift of longevity comes the responsibility to ensure that those extra years are spent in good health and with a high quality of life.
Senior health encompasses far more than just the absence of illness. It includes the physical, emotional, mental, and social dimensions that allow older adults to live with dignity and independence. As the senior population continues to grow—both in the United States and globally—there is an urgent need to understand and support the unique needs of this group. For many, aging brings with it the wisdom of experience and the freedom to pursue long-held interests. But it can also come with challenges: chronic illness, reduced mobility, changes in cognition, and the loss of loved ones. How individuals navigate this transition can determine not just how long they live, but how well.
One of the cornerstones of senior health is physical well-being. As the body ages, it undergoes a series of natural changes—muscle mass declines, bones become more brittle, and metabolism slows. These changes can affect balance, strength, and endurance, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. But regular physical activity has been shown to counteract many of these effects. Seniors who engage in consistent exercise routines—such as walking, swimming, tai chi, or resistance training—often experience improved cardiovascular health, stronger muscles, better balance, and even enhanced brain function. In fact, physical activity is one of the most effective ways to maintain independence and reduce the risk of chronic disease.
Beyond the physical, mental health is a vital yet often overlooked component of senior well-being. While some degree of cognitive slowing may be a normal part of aging, significant memory loss or confusion may indicate a more serious issue such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Early detection can lead to better planning, treatment options, and improved quality of life. But cognitive health isn’t just about preventing disease—it’s about staying mentally engaged. Seniors who remain intellectually active, whether by reading, doing puzzles, taking classes, or learning new skills, are more likely to maintain sharp thinking and mental flexibility.
Emotional well-being is equally important. Depression and anxiety are not uncommon among older adults but are frequently underdiagnosed. Symptoms may not always appear as sadness; they may present as fatigue, sleep disturbances, or irritability. The risk factors are numerous—grief, isolation, chronic pain, or illness can all contribute. Fortunately, treatments ranging from therapy to medication, and from social interaction to mindfulness practices, can be highly effective. Community programs, support groups, and family involvement can also provide the emotional scaffolding seniors need to stay resilient.
Sleep changes are another common issue among older adults. While seniors don’t necessarily need less sleep than younger adults, they often experience shifts in sleep patterns, including trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Medical conditions, medication side effects, and even reduced exposure to daylight can all impact sleep quality. Establishing a regular sleep routine, limiting caffeine and screen time in the evenings, and seeking treatment for conditions like sleep apnea can significantly improve rest and recovery.
Ultimately, the goal of senior health is not simply to add years to life, but to add life to years. This means enabling older adults to live with autonomy, joy, and a sense of fulfillment. It requires a collaborative effort—between individuals, families, communities, healthcare providers, and policymakers. Health in older age is not just about treating illness, but about creating environments that allow older adults to flourish. When we invest in senior health, we affirm the value of every stage of life and build a society where growing older is something to look forward to—not fear.
As we look to the future of senior health, one truth stands out above all: aging is not a condition to be treated, but a journey to be supported with care, dignity, and intention. The senior years can be among the most fulfilling stages of life—but only when older adults are given the right tools, environments, and relationships to help them thrive.
