Madonna ProActive has changed to Madonna Rehabilitation Wellness Club, for short, Madonna Wellness Club. The change was prompted by an organization wide initiative to simplify the names of various departments. The intention behind it is to tell the community who they are and what they do directly through the name! So often, Madonna Wellness Club received questions from the community asking if gym memberships were available to the public and some weren’t aware it is a gym or wellness club at all! The idea is the name change will help with that. Examples of other name changes throughout the organization include Madonna TherapyPlus is now Madonna Rehabilitation Outpatient Therapy and the corporate wellness division, Madonna Fit For Work is now Madonna Rehabilitation Occupational Health and Wellness.

The new names are already in effect, Madonna Wellness Club’s update can be noticed on the website (wellnessclub.madonna.org). Although the exterior signage on the facility has not yet changed, that is anticipated to occur sometime in the next nine-12 months.

The services and amenities offered at Madonna Wellness Club remain the same! This includes gym memberships, access to three pools, full lockers rooms with towels, personal training services, over 100 group fitness classes each week, health and wellness coaching plus our clinically based services like cardiac rehab, physical and occupational therapy.

Madonna Wellness Club is proud to be Lincoln’s first medically-based health and fitness center for the whole community — served by our caring, cutting-edge team of coaches, trainers and medical experts. Learn more at wellnessclub.madonna.org.

BuildingaThrivingCulture:AKeytoOfficeEfficiency

Efficiency isn’t just about streamlined processes and welldocumented procedures—it’s about people. A business cannot thrive on structure alone; it must cultivate a culture where communication and collaboration fuel productivity.

One of the biggest roadblocks to efficiency is misalignment—when team members don’t fully understand their roles, expectations, or how their work contributes to the bigger picture. Clear communication bridges this gap. Using the Maxwell Method of DISC, leaders can better understand individual communication styles, ensuring that messages are delivered effectively and received with clarity. Tailoring communication fosters stronger relationships and minimizes misunderstandings that hinder productivity.

Moreover, productivity isn’t just about doing more—it’s about working smarter. The Working Genius framework helps identify where individuals naturally thrive in the work process, ensuring tasks align with their strengths. This not only boosts efficiency but also preserves energy, preventing burnout and frustration. Encouraging employees to collaborate based on their genius areas enhances productivity without unnecessary effort.

Equally important is recognizing that culture influences energy and engagement. When employees feel valued and understand how their contributions impact the company’s success, they are more invested. Setting clear priorities, maintaining open lines of communication, and fostering a positive environment drive sustainable efficiency.

The most successful businesses don’t just manage processes—they cultivate a thriving culture where communication, productivity, and collaboration go hand in hand.

Leadership Harbor is hosting a workshop on May 20, (5730 R St, Suite C2) to Unlock Your Natural Genius and transform your work energy. They also help you unlock your true potential by offering individual, group and business culture coaching, as well as workshops and keynotes/presentations.

Dream big, and start moving forward! Learn more about their workshops at leadershipharbor.com or contact them at grow@ leadershipharbor.com or (402) 580-0947.

OpenWindowEmpowersEducationFoundations to Elevate Philanthropy in Public Schools

Open Window CEO Wendy Van recently led training workshops at the National Association of Education Foundations conference (NAEF) in Knoxville, Tennessee, equipping K-12 education foundation leaders with essential communication strategies to advocate for philanthropic support in public education.

Public schools often face the misconception that tax dollars cover all students’ needs. In reality, education foundations play a crucial role in bridging funding gaps—supporting students through enhanced learning experiences, career academies, scholarships and more to help students reach their full potential, but without strong storytelling and clear messaging, these needs could go unmet.

The current swirl of uncertainty surrounding federal funding for local school districts raises significant concerns. Should federal funding be reduced, philanthropy will become even more essential in ensuring students receive the educational opportunities they deserve.

Open Window’s workshops focused on helping over 100 education foundation leaders craft compelling, data-informed cases for support and tell their stories. Participants learned to effectively communicate the pressing needs of public schools and the transformative role of philanthropy. The sessions also emphasized the importance of deep collaboration between school districts and education foundations.

“Education foundations are essential partners in creating innovative learning opportunities that tax dollars simply don’t cover,” said Wendy Van, founder of Open Window. “By equipping foundation and school leaders with the tools to tell their stories effectively, we empower them to inspire greater philanthropic investment in public education.”

From funding classroom grants to providing mentorship programs and career academies, education foundations are vital in shaping the future of students. Open Window remains committed to supporting these organizations in their mission to enhance learning and educational equity through philanthropy.

Alpha Zed Business Services Builds New Website and Automated Client Onboarding System for Fit by April

Alpha Zed is proud to announce their newest project with Fit for April! This new system takes Fit by April from a very manual onboarding system to an automated system from start to finish.

An intuitive homepage (fitbyapril.com) displays information specific to the stage of the journey for a particular lead. For example, the new client contact form only appears for leads that have not yet made a purchase with Fit by April.

Once a client purchases a fitness package they can complete all of the forms online. They are then directed to the booking page specific to the location they chose so they can schedule their sessions. After all their new-client package sessions have been held, the automation presents them with the option to sign up for ongoing sessions with Fit by April and allows them to choose the level that is right for them.

Other features included in the build are:

• In opportunity to get on the waitlist for the owner’s upcoming book. Purchases can be made from the website, with automation notifying her about the purchase and providing mailing labels to use when sending the books out.

• An automated referral system so that existing clients can refer others to sign up for a discounted session and earn a referral bonus. Fit by April is thrilled with the opportunity to streamline her operations and be more available for her clients.

Alpha Zed is here to transform chaos into clarity with technology and automation, learn more and set up a consultation at systemssuperhero. com or contact her at kim@alphazedservices.com and (531) 530-9390.

Zipline Brewing Co. to Reopen Popular Brewery Taproom in Lincoln

Zipline Brewing Company is excited to announce the highly anticipated reopening of its Brewery Taproom, located at 2100 Magnum Circle in Lincoln, Nebraska. After a two-year hiatus, the taproom is making its return with an updated space, expanded offerings and a renewed commitment to connecting directly with Nebraska’s beer lovers.

“When we expanded our brewing operations in 2023 to become Nebraska’s largest brewery, we temporarily closed the taproom to accommodate construction,” said Zipline President Mark Lawson. “Now, following the successful expansion and the opening of our new Zipline Tap & Grill located in Fallbrook, the time is right to welcome our community back to the heart of our brewery.”

Guests returning to the taproom will recognize the original bar and stools, thoughtfully reimagined in a refreshed, industrial-cozy setting that blends old charm with modern comforts.

Brendan McGinn, Zipline’s Director of Brewing Operations, emphasized the taproom’s role in shaping the brewery’s direction. “The taproom gives us the chance to connect directly with our fans, showcase favorites like Dear Old Nebraska Brew, Ziplite, and Green Label IPA, and experiment with smallbatch and specialty beers,” said McGinn. “We love engaging in conversations over a pint, it helps us stay in tune with what beer drinkers want and how we can continue crafting award-winning brews that fit every Nebraskan occasion, from tailgates and concerts to driveways and fairways.”

Help them celebrate with their grand opening weekend May 1-4 with a live Broadcast of Huskers Online Show featuring Sean Callanan, Steve Sipple and Robin Washut, plus beer specials. Live music and other special guests are to be announced.

Grow Lincoln Celebrates 15 Years on the Air HighlightingBusinessandDevelopmentTrends

Robin Eschliman of the Grow Lincoln radio show and podcast has announced the 15th anniversary of the show, which has aired on 1400 AM/99.3 FM KLIN since 2010. Eschliman, owner of Eschliman Commercial Real Estate, co-hosts the show with Dave Albers, owner of the Albers Company.

Grow Lincoln was launched at a pivotal time in the city’s development, as Lincoln residents debated the value of growth and the viability of projects like the Pinnacle Bank Arena. The show carved out a niche by bringing business and construction news to listeners in a format that is both lighthearted and educational.

Over the past 15 years, the show has chronicled major shifts in Lincoln’s business landscape, including:

• The quiet exit of large insurance companies

• A rise in entrepreneurial activity in the Haymarket and O Street.

• A surge in medical and banking building permits

• More housing in Downtown, but less daytime foot traffic since COVID-19

• Changing community attitudes toward liquor (more liquor permits)

• The explosion of the drive-thru coffee industry

• Lincoln consumers focused more on locally-owned stores

• The emergence “micro trends” like bubble tea, cupcakes, and personal services

“From the beginning, our goal was to help the community enjoy how Lincoln was evolving—and to not be afraid of it,” said Eschliman. “Fifteen years later, we’re still fascinated by how business and new construction change our city.”

To celebrate the milestone, Grow Lincoln was interviewed in KLIN’s “LNK Today show”. The podcast can be heard on the April 10 podcast, 34 minutes from the end: https://klin.com/lnktoday/

Short Answer: A New Way to Educate

Short Answer is a K12 educational technology tool that improves student writing ability through gamified writing activities. Used by over 50,000 monthly active teachers and students across all 50 states and 10 countries, Short Answer improves students’ writing ability through short-form, social writing activities that can be embedded into any content area.

Traditional approaches to K12 writing instruction have been turned upside down by artificial intelligence (AI). AI can now write for students, and if and when writing leaves the classroom, it can be challenging for schools to know how much of an influence AI is having on student writing. Short Answer helps schools make the fundamental changes to writing instruction necessary to continue developing student writing ability in this new reality. It does so through shortform, in-class writing activities that can be completed in the controlled environment of a classroom. It also embeds more writing practice across the curriculum so that writing instruction is no longer falling only on the English teachers’ shoulders. Perhaps most importantly, it also addresses the motivation challenge for students by creating gamified, social writing activities that encourage students to want to practice writing.

Short Answer is based in Louisville, Nebraska, and is built by Adam and Alexa Sparks. Adam is a proud Nebraska educator who recently taught at Louisville and Milford Public Schools. Alexa is a senior software engineer who recently completed her master’s degree in Education Data Science at Stanford University.

Do you know how your health insurance travels with you?

Summer means it’s time to travel. Whether it’s exploring our great state of Nebraska, traveling within the country or abroad, it would be a good idea to add “learn about my health insurance travel network” to your to do list before you leave.

If insured through an employer, you may or may not have access to a nationwide network of providers – doctors, hospitals, urgent care clinics, pharmacies, etc. You may also be covered to travel internationally. Check with your HR team to know how you can use your health insurance while you are away from home.

In general, Medicare is a US based benefit that does not offer international coverage except for emergencies. A Medicare Supplement policy allows you to use any provider that is contracted with Medicare anywhere within the US and may offer a limited amount of international coverage. Medicare Advantage plans offer very little international coverage, and you should also be aware of network issues while traveling in the states.

If you have coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace (Healthcare.gov), you will have coverage for emergency-only services when you are out of state. Urgent care visits may also be covered. There is no international coverage, so an additional travel policy is essential.

In our post-Covid world, nearly every plan offers some kind of telehealth / tele-doc coverage. Many plans offer 24/7 access to this type of care for non-emergency cases. These services can often be accessed through an app on a smartphone and can eliminate the need to find an “in-network” doctor.

Keeping current on your plan information will help you and your loved ones be prepared to avoid the stress of dealing with medical issues if your travel plans lead to a trip to the local doctor or medical facility.

International travel medical plans are available at a very reasonable price. When traveling internationally, you will typically be responsible for paying the medical charges at the time of service and will submit a claim for reimbursement to your insurance company when you return home. Make sure to collect any invoices or receipts!

If your travel plans include any “extreme sports” such as mountaineering, scuba diving, hang gliding, or bungee jumping, you need to confirm whether your health insurance will cover it. There can be exclusions for high-risk activities.

The licensed agents at On Point Insurance Agency can help you find the right travel plan. Bon voyage!

STAR CITY SIX BECCA

Meet Becca Fowler in Investor Relations at the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.

Tell us about your business. - The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to driving business and community success. Our key initiatives focus on economic growth, attracting and retaining residents and visitors, advocating for business-friendly policies, and fostering business connections.

How did you get started? - My journey in Lincoln started with the Chamber when my husband and I moved back from Minneapolis. Attending events and engaging with passionate local leaders inspired me. When this position became available, I jumped at the chance to contribute to our community’s growth.

Biggest professional challenge? - Time and awareness. There are many valuable initiatives, but not enough time or collective knowledge to push them forward effectively.

Most important professional achievement? - Helping others recognize their value and grow in their careers by connecting them with opportunities and people that help them succeed.

Tell us about your family. - My husband, a Nebraska native, helps run two local businesses and loves cycling and my pit mix rescue, Bailey, who is my constant (sometimes grumpy) companion.

Biggest turning point in life? - Moving to North Carolina and then Lincoln for college. Growing up in Southern California, these moves gave me exposure to different communities and perspectives, helping me connect with a diverse group of people.

Favorite way to spend a day off? - Reading, cycling (slower than my husband, as he loves to remind me), exploring new places, or diving—though not often, since we’re landlocked!

Who inspires you? - Women who have changed history despite adversity—Temple Grandin, Elizabeth I, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Jane Goodall, to name a few.

Best piece of advice you’ve received? - Be curious, and treat everyone like they matter—because they do.

One word you’d like to be remembered as? - Dogmatic—relentless in the pursuit of meaningful, impactful work.

A talent you don’t use at work? - I’m great at traveling like a local and finding hidden gems wherever I go.

A talent you’d like to develop? - Balancing big-picture goals while staying focused on the day-to-day tasks that drive success.

If you could choose another profession? - An artist—art has a profound emotional and inspirational impact.

Local nonprofit you’re passionate about? - Junior Achievement, because they equip youth with essential skills for success in adulthood.

Favorite book? - Daring Greatly by Brené Brown—she uses research to show how embracing imperfections and leading with authenticity strengthens relationships.

Favorite movie? - I’m a horror junkie—Silent Hill and Cabin in the Woods are two favorites.

Favorite local restaurant? - I love Thai and Indian food—Tandoor and Asian Taste are my go-tos.

If you could have dinner with one famous person? - Elizabeth I—to hear how she navigated ruling a nation against all odds.

STAR CITY SIX CASEY

Casey Bogenrief A WELL BEING

Casey Bogenrief is the owner, operator, and clinician at A Well Being.

Tell us a little about your business. - A Well Being is a concierge mobile physical therapy and wellness service prioritizing direct prophylactic healthcare for musculoskeletal conditions, balance and fall prevention, pain management, and gait training.

How did you get started in the business? - I have been in healthcare my whole life. I filed charts and answered phones at my parents’ family practice medical office. I ate my pancakes with the American Academy of Family Physician’s magazine opened to the page with the gory dermatologic conditions and surgical photos. I learned a lot about injury prevention and rehabilitation in my days as a competitive gymnast. I met Tom, who is still the head athletic trainer for the University of Nebraska Women’s Gymnastics program, who inspired me to pursue athletic training. Since high school, I gained experience in gyms, athletic training rooms, sports sidelines, hospitals, outpatient physical therapy, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, and home health care. I have treated the range of abilities from future olympians at Texas to the bedbound patients in the ICU at Mayo Clinic. After seeing the wellness continuum I knew that there were 2 primary problems. 1) Some of the injuries and illnesses I encountered were preventable. Insurance doesn’t cover everything. They pay once you’re sick, but invest minimally to keep you healthy. 2) There are too many people. You talk to the answering service, the administrative assistant, the technician, the insurance specialist, and more. My solutions are 1) analyze your functional mobility to identify injury risk factors, prevent injury, and if you do get hurt, return you to your optimal life quality and 2) provide direct mobile care. You call, I respond, and I’ll meet you in your familiar environment. Is your condition out of my scope? I will refer you to the right professional and make sure you don’t fall through the cracks of the disjointed healthcare system. Even non-athletes should have a medical professional on their sideline. Everyone deserves to be ‘a well being’.

Tell us a little about your family. - I have been married for almost 6 years. Brent owns Pride Manufacturing. His success fostered my ability to open A Well Being. My step-daughter Khloe, 14, is an avid athlete. My son Barrett, 4, is obsessed with football and fishing. You might hear him yelling, “Go Big Red” or “Hook ‘em Horns” in the grocery store. My daughter Lydia turns 2 on the longest day of the year. Water is her passion, swimming in the pool, taking baths, and splashing in the dog bowls. We have 2 Bernedoodles, Moby and Cocoa, mischievous, but great security guards.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

- Transitioning from a student to a medical professional. Textbook knowledge does not always translate well to real-life situations. Also, being a mom. Your brain and body are not the same…they’re stronger!

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Travel with my family and spend time outside.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - The Lincoln Children’s Zoo, cute animals, period.

The Care You Need to Get Better : 5431 S 16th Street (531) 739-3200

Kylie Gana is the Co-Owner at Venue 5 Twenty-Two

Tell us a little about your business.Venue 5 Twenty-Two is where elegance and versatility come together to create unforgettable events. Our luxury venue is designed to host weddings, corporate gatherings, showers, graduation celebrations, holiday parties and more. With a modern aesthetic and a thoughtfully crafted space, we provide the perfect backdrop for your special occasion. While our venue sets the stage, your vision brings it to life.

How did you get started in the business? - I had always dreamed of owning my own business. Growing up, I was surrounded by entrepreneurship—my parents, Craig and Lori Gana, are the owners of Gana Trucking and Excavating. That environment sparked my ambition early on. When it came time for college, I chose to major in Hospitality, Restaurant, and Tourism Management, with minors in the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship. It was during college that I truly discovered her love for events—being involved in event planning groups through Engler and interning at Embassy Suites in Lincoln helped shape my vision.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - One of the biggest challenges so far has been selling the vision of our space while it was still under construction. We were fortunate to average 5–7 tours a week during construction, but it’s definitely tough to help couples and clients fully picture the finished space when all we had were renderings and in-progress walk throughs. It required a lot of trust on their end, and a lot of imagination.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - The greatest achievement has been bringing the vision to life. I remember, my parents and I walked into the architect’s office with a dream and a distinct aesthetic, and after nearly four years in the making, we’re beyond excited to finally open our doors and share it with others.

Tell us a little about your family. - My parents are Craig and Lori Gana, and I’m the oldest of three kids. I have two younger brothers, Kyson and Kaden, who are both currently in high school at Norris. My family is very close-knit—we love spending time together at the lake, going on trips, shopping with my mom, or just hanging out at home. I’m also incredibly lucky to be gaining another amazing family as I’m engaged to Chase DeVries. We’re getting married in July 2025 at Venue 5 Twenty-Two, and we’re so excited to celebrate with all of our loved ones in a space that already means so much to us.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I’ve always had a love for living in the country and for agriculture as a whole. Growing up, I was actively involved in showing livestock through 4-H and FFA, and it was a big part of my upbringing. My family raises around 2,000 head of cattle, so livestock has always been a huge part of my life.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Cosmetologist and Hair Stylist

AngelsAmongUsServesLincolnandLancaster County with Record Numbers in 2024

Over 83% of pediatric cancer families will experience some level of financial hardship. Angels Among Us is committed to easing the financial and emotional burdens on pediatric cancer families to keep them in their homes and as financially stable as possible to remain focused on what matters most: their sick child.

In 2024, AAU served 18 families from Lancaster County with over $87,000 in financial assistance in the form of critical bill payments. These monthly payments are made directly to creditors for the duration of the child’s critical treatment plan. AAU pays rent, mortgage, utilities, and car payments to alleviate the financial stress brought on by a pediatric cancer diagnosis.

AAU has also provided several emotional support programming events in Lincoln to meet families in their community. Events at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo and Angel Flix at the Lincoln Grand Cinema allow families a social outing that is otherwise may not be possible.

“AAU has been an invaluable support system for our family during this challenging time,” says one of AAU’s Lincoln families. “Their assistance has alleviated financial stress, enabling us to focus entirely on treatment and recovery. We are deeply grateful for the programs they provide and for their unwavering support and dedication to serving families like ours.”

Since 2006, Angels Among Us has supported nearly 800 families with over $5 million in financial support. If you are interested in learning more about AAU’s mission or how you can support, please contact Ashley McMurchie at ashley@myangelsamongus.org or by calling 402-934-0999.

Health Through The Green Light Campaign

This May, Tobacco Free Lancaster County invites local businesses and community members to participate in the #GreenLightProjectNE, proudly partnering with the Mental Health Association of Nebraska and the Lancaster County Prevention Coalition (Talk Heart 2 Heart) for the third consecutive year.

In alignment with Mental Health America’s nationwide “Light Up Green” initiative, the Green Light Project encourages individuals and businesses throughout Nebraska to illuminate their homes and buildings with green lights during May. This visible display of solidarity supports those facing mental health challenges and helps break down the stigma surrounding mental health.

Participation is simple yet powerful—residents and businesses can illuminate their buildings green, display yard signs, and share supportive messages on social media using #GreenLightProjectNE. Complimentary green light bulbs and yard signs are available while supplies last at the Mental Health Association of Nebraska office located at 1500 S 70th St., STE 201.

Throughout the campaign, Tobacco Free Lancaster County will share valuable information about the impact of nicotine on mental health, including how quitting tobacco can improve symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. The campaign encourages adopting healthy, supportive coping strategies for improved mental well-being.

Join Tobacco Free Lancaster County in lighting Nebraska green this May. Visit mha-ne.org/how-to-help/greenlightprojectne.html for additional information and resources.

Matt Talbot Hosts Open House May 29 for Hope Lives Here: Investing In a Bold Future

For Give to Lincoln Day, Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach is raising money to strengthen and sustain their life-changing hunger relief and homeless prevention services.

Everyone is welcome to walk through Matt Talbot’s open doors and get a prepared, hot, and nutritious meal two times a day, every day. Guests can also access Matt Talbot’s on-site Fresh Choice Pantry and choose food items that best meet their needs, including refrigerated items such as meats, dairy, eggs, and produce. Last year, Matt Talbot provided nearly 250,000 meals to our community through on-site meals and food distributed through the Fresh Choice Pantry.

Matt Talbot’s housing programs use evidence-based best practices for securing safe and stable housing for those experiencing homelessness. Last year, Matt Talbot housed over 100 people and prevented many others from entering homelessness through homeless diversion services.

Finding solutions to homelessness is not only compassionate, it makes economic sense as the costs of providing emergency services to one person experiencing chronic homelessness is nearly three times the cost of one year of supportive housing.

A gift to Matt Talbot for Give to Lincoln Day will help the community solve the complex problem of homelessness and move everyone closer to ensuring everyone in Lincoln has a safe place to sleep at night. To celebrate the impact financial gifts have on Matt Talbot’s daily hunger relief and homeless prevention services, the community is invited to an open house at Matt Talbot on Thursday, May 29 at 5:30 p.m.

The Nebraska Communities Playhouse Announces Exciting Summer Lineup of Performances and Youth Camps

Give

to Lincoln Day: Help Keep Lincoln’s Babies Dry

The Nebraska Communities Playhouse (NCP) in Hickman is gearing up for an unforgettable summer of theater with a variety of exciting performances and enriching opportunities for young artists. The summer season will feature two dynamic productions, along with specialized theater camps for young performers.

Seussical

Prepare to embark on a whimsical journey with the beloved characters of Dr. Seuss in Seussical! This fun-filled musical will be performed on June 20-22 and June 27-29. Audiences will be transported to the imaginative world of Seuss, where characters like Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and Gertrude McFuzz come to life in a vibrant, toe-tapping extravaganza.

Pirated!

Arrrrrr! Set sail with Pirated! August 15-17 and August 22-24. This new musical flips The Pirates of Penzance upside-down, setting it in an early 1930s Hollywood studio during the filming of the Gilbert and Sullivan masterpiece. A hodgepodge of talent has been assembled, including silent film has-beens with terrible voices, brilliant vocalists with “faces for radio” who provide the actors’ dialogue and singing, and an over-worked crew who return in Act II as members of the tap-dancing Los Angeles Police Department.

Y.A.C.H.T. Club (Young Artists Collective - Hickman Theater)

NCP’s Y.A.C.H.T. Club is offering a unique opportunity for aspiring young performers this summer. The Boot Camps are designed for kids ages 6-17 and are the perfect opportunity for young artists to develop their skills while having fun and making new friends.

Since then, the Road Race has helped raise more than $125,000 for pediatric brain cancer research. Learn more at teamjackfoundation.org.

This May 29, Nebraska Diaper Bank is proud to participate in Give to Lincoln Day for the very first time, with a goal of raising $5,000. Your support ensures that families in our community don’t have to face diaper need alone. Every donation helps keep babies in Lincoln healthy, happy and safe—one diaper at a time.

For more than 4,000 babies under age 3 in Lincoln, diaper need is a daily struggle. Diapers can’t be purchased with SNAP, WIC, or Medicaid, forcing some parents to stretch supplies, reuse disposables, or potty train too early. The consequences? Health issues, developmental delays and immense stress for caregivers.

Nebraska Diaper Bank (NDB) is working to change that. In 2024, we distributed 524,720 diapers in Lincoln to 1,306 babies, ensuring those families had what they needed to keep their little ones clean, dry and healthy. Through partnerships with agencies like Center for People, diapers are braided into wraparound services—supporting families already working hard to build brighter futures.

The impact is undeniable: babies sleep more soundly, parents feel less stress, and families can redirect their limited income toward essentials like rent, groceries, and the ability to show up for work each day.

When you give on May 29, you’re not just giving diapers—you’re giving relief, dignity and opportunity. Donate today at givetolincoln. com/nonprofits/nebraska-diaper-bank.

Let’s close the diaper gap in Lincoln—together.

Give diapers. Give dignity. Give to Lincoln.

Josh the Otter – Be Safe Around Water

The Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation’s (JCMF) founders Blake and Kathy Collingsworth continue to strive to promote water safety and awareness year-round!

Rotary club partners have done an amazing job of supporting the Josh the Otter safety mission to prevent accidental drowning. Together, their joint goal is to educate children with a fun and simple mission: stay away from water unless accompanied by an adult. Rotarians have helped spread this life-saving message by distributing and reading the Josh the Otter book in their local communities, producing events featuring the Josh mascot and distributing educational materials all over the world!

Additionally, their Float 4 Life coaches do a fantastic job of teaching kids how to float with numerous lessons being taught weekly and number continue to grow! They also plan to continue to provide more life jacket loaner stations at the surrounding lakes – don’t have a life jacket? No problem! JCMF wants kids – and adults safe when entering into or around bodies of water, so they provide life jackets to borrow.

If you would like to help out, JCMF will take gently used life jackets off your hands, so keep them in mind when completing your spring cleaning! JCMF wants all children to be safe and learning to float and swim should be of no less importance than looking both ways before crossing the street. Drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for children ages one to four and their goal is to reduce these numbers! If you have a child or grandchild who would benefit from their Float 4 Life lessons, please reach out and get more information at float4life.org or learn more at joshtheotter.org or call (402) 613-5555.

CPR: A Life-Saving Skill

CAPITOL EYE CARE & OPENINGS

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), is an emergency lifesaving technique used when someone’s heartbeat has stopped. It’s performed in cases of cardiac arrest, drowning, or other emergencies where the heart suddenly stops functioning properly. In cardiac arrest, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs which can cause permanent brain damage or death within minutes. CPR helps maintain blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain and other organs until medical help arrives or a defibrillator becomes available.

Basic Steps of CPR (for adults):

• Gently tap and shout to see if the person is conscious.

• Dial 911 or ask someone else to

• Start chest compressions- place hands in the center of the chest and push hard and fast (about 100-120 compressions per minute)

• Use rescue breaths, only if trained- Every 30 compressions, give two rescue breaths

For untrained bystanders, hands-only CPR (compressions without rescue breaths) is encouraged. Taking a certified CPR course can prepare you to act confidently in an emergency. Organizations like the American Heart Association or Red Cross offer classes that combine practical training with valuable knowledge.

Ensure your business has a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan- a written, structured plan outlining how an organization will respond to a sudden cardiac arrest. Having a CERP ensures that everyone knows their role in an emergency, which can save valuable time and lives.

Key Elements of a CERP:

• Accessible AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) on-site

• CPR and AED training for staff, coaches or key personnel

• Emergency communication system such as calling 911 and directing EMS

• Regular drills and practice

In a Cardiac emergency every second counts and having a CERP in place ensures immediate and effective response. CPR significantly increases the survival rate of an individual upon arrival to the hospital.

Providing quality early childhood education is a key aspect of the Head Start program at Community Action Partnership of Lancaster and Saunders Counties (Community Action.)

As participants in the City of Lincoln’s On-the-Job Training Program (OJT)

we’re happy to announce three CDA graduations (Child Development Associate) in the last six months! Attaining this credential takes hours of training, work experience, and completing a professional portfolio. To reduce barriers to participation, Community Action’s program offers our staff regular coaching and incentivized learning and other helpful supports, such as gas vouchers and emergency financial assistance for childcare and transportation. This OJT assists our Head Start and Early Head Start center-based teachers to work towards education that leads them to be stronger classroom leaders as well as to pay increases and promotions. There are 48 Community Action participants within the OJT program who are continuing their work towards their early childhood education degree, their CDA, and other necessary credentials. Congratulations on all their hard work!

3 Ways to Protect Your Heart and Brain This American Stroke

Month

Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke and 1 in 4 stroke survivors will have another one. During May, American Stroke Month, the American Stroke Association is raising awareness that a stroke is largely preventable, treatable and beatable.

3 Ways to Beat a Stroke:

1. Spot a Stroke F.A.S.T.: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty—Time to call 911.

2. Know Your Blood Pressure: Keep it in a healthy range to reduce stroke risk.

3. Prevent Another Stroke: Talk to your doctor about managing risk factors.

A stroke happens when blood flow in the brain is interrupted, causing cell death. Quick identification and treatment increase survival and recovery chances. Having a stroke increases the risk of a second one. Identify your risk factors to reduce this risk.

Stroke risk is higher among Black and Hispanic adults due to unmanaged factors like high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. Education and lifestyle changes, such as moving more, eating smart and managing conditions like AFib, can prevent strokes.

Spot a Stroke F.A.S.T.:

• Face Drooping: Uneven smile?

• Arm Weakness: One arm drifts downward?

• Speech Difficulty: Slurred speech or hard to understand?

• Time to Call 911: Get medical attention immediately.

Test your knowledge with the F.A.S.T. Experience, a digital series of games and activities to educate on stroke warning signs. Prevent stroke now, so you can be there later. Learn more at Stroke. org/StrokeMonth.

Record Number of Nonprofits Registered for 14th Annual Give to Lincoln Day

Bright Lights Summer Camp Fun!

Lincoln’s 14th annual giving day is scheduled for Thursday, May 29. Coordinated by the Lincoln Community Foundation (LCF), Give to Lincoln Day is an online event encouraging donations to support the local nonprofits and causes people care about. A record number of more than 490 nonprofits have registered for this year’s event. Every participating nonprofit organization will receive a proportional share of a $650,000 match fund, based upon its percentage of total dollars raised, thanks to LCF and sponsors including Presenting Sponsor, West Gate Bank.

Last year’s event raised a record $8.5 million for 463 local nonprofits. The event has raised $65 million since 2012.

“Last year’s record-breaking results demonstrates what we can accomplish when we come together to give for good,” said Tracy Edgerton, LCF President. “During this time of uncertainty for many local nonprofits, a gift on Give to Lincoln Day represents more than just dollars. It’s a show of support for their important work that adds so much to our quality of life here in Lincoln.”

Starting May 1, donors may search participating nonprofits and give online at GiveToLincoln.com. Donations must be made before 11:59 p.m. on May 29 to count toward the giving day and the match fund. The minimum donation is $10 per charity. Additionally, gifts made online at GiveToLincoln.com from May 1 through May 28 are eligible for a daily drawing to receive a $250 boost from Allo Communications.

On May 29 donation totals can be viewed throughout the day at GiveToLincoln.com.

The Lincoln Community Foundation, established in 1955, strives to continually enrich the Lincoln community by promoting and achieving perpetual philanthropic support. The Foundation has distributed more than $255 million in grants to nonprofit organizations that have improved the lives of thousands of residents.

BigBrothers,BigSistersSeekingNewMentors!

Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for caring couples to become mentors through its ‘Big Couples’ program.

Big Couples are two adults in a long-term relationship (3+ years) who volunteer together to mentor one Little Brother. Matches enjoy activities in their community as a trio and have the option to spend one-on-one time with their Little.

This opportunity is perfect for couples who want to make an impact but may not be able to make the monthly time commitment on their own. Sharing the role means sharing the fun while giving a child the benefit of two positive role models!

Big Brothers, Big Sisters of the Midlands helps children realize their potential and build their futures. They nurture children and strengthen communities and they cannot do it without your help.

There are so many ways you can help! To learn more or sign up to be a Big, visit bbbsmidlands.org or contact Kyle at kbishop@ bbbslincoln.org.

There is still plenty of time to register your student for Bright Lights summer camps! Many are still available and you can view them all at BrightLights. org.

If you’re wondering if your middle schooler can still benefit from going to summer camp, the answer is they can! It’s important for them to stay engaged and learning over the summer, too. In fact, it can be the perfect time for them to meet new people and try a new hobby and Bright Lights is a great way to do both.

Camps fit into almost any schedule-- even around other activities-- as most camps run for three hours either in the morning or afternoon, Monday through Friday. (But there are full-day camps as well!)

During camp, your teen is supervised, challenged with hands-on activities and surrounded by peers with similar interests. Learning a new skill can boost your student’s self-esteem and confidence. It can also lead to the discovery of a new hobby or a desire to learn more on a topic when school resumes. Having a planned activity during the day can also help students decrease screen time.

Bright Lights offers middle school camps that focus on art, cooking, sewing, engineering, science and more. There is also an opportunity to take camps with visiting Japanese students during Bright Lights International Week June 9-13.

To see all the Bright Lights camps available, visit https://brightlights.org/ camps/camp-list/ and sort by the grade your student is in this spring. We also have Camp Assistant positions available to students in 8th grade and older. Visit brightlights.org/assistants for more information and to apply.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Lincoln Set for October 5 at Victory Park

The YMCA of Lincoln is set to host its fourth annual communitywide swimsuit drive May 7-21, collecting new and gently used swimsuits for more than 100 children enrolled in grant-based swim lessons this summer. The opportunity to teach youth how to swim, along with life-saving water safety skills is made possible by a swimming lesson grant through Y-USA and in partnership with Lincoln Public Schools and Lincoln Community Learning Centers.

“Two of the biggest barriers families face when wanting to provide swim lessons for their children are transportation and cost – both for the lessons and swimsuits,” shared Tabetha Burnham, Aquatics Director at the Northeast YMCA. “As the community’s leader in swim instruction, the Y is grateful to be in a position to teach children of all ages and from all backgrounds the importance of water safety while helping overcome fears.”

To participate, donors can drop off swimsuits at any of the four Lincoln YMCA locations. Sizes needed are school age XS-XL for boys and girls (one-piece preferred). Swimsuits will be distributed to students attending Lincoln’s Community Learning Centers, with swim lessons beginning in early June. YMCA and community members donating swimsuits will be entered to win one free session (six classes) of group swimming lessons at the Lincoln YMCA along with a free week pass to “Try the Y.”

The YMCA of Lincoln has served the community for over 150 years, promoting positive values through programs that build spirit, mind, and body for all. For more information on the Lincoln YMCA along with a list of branch locations, visit ymcalincoln.org.

MayisMentalHealthAwarenessMonth–Help, Hope, and Healing are Here

Did you know that 1 in 7 children ages 3 to 17 has a current, diagnosed mental or behavioral health condition?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to promote awareness, share resources and advocate for the mental health and well-being of children and adults. Maintaining good mental health is essential to everyone’s overall health and well being. Mental health conditions are common, manageable and treatable.

Seeking professional help is a sign of strength, not weakness. You don’t have to go through your struggle alone. And you aren’t alone – about half of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their lives.

Many factors can contribute to a mental health struggle, including economic status, loneliness, current events, social media and so much more. But there are steps to take to prevent mental health conditions from developing or manage symptoms. A licensed, qualified mental health therapist can help. Help and hope are available. HopeSpoke is here.

Since 1949, HopeSpoke has specialized in providing comprehensive behavioral and mental health services for children, teens and families in our community. Services are available for adults as well. Community support means mental health care is available for our community’s most vulnerable youth. This year’s Mental Health Awareness Month theme is ‘Turn Awareness into Action.’ Your donations will allow HopeSpoke to take action for our community, making sure no one faces economic barriers to treatment.

Contributions supporting HopeSpoke and Mental Health Awareness month can be made during this year’s Give to Lincoln Day event at https://givetolincoln.com/nonprofits/hopespoke.

For more information about mental health services available at HopeSpoke, visit hopespoke.org or call (402) 475-7666.

Looking ahead, they are seeking sponsors for 2026 and encouraging new monthly donors. They have added three, but still need many more to sustain their mission. Even a small monthly gift—or rounding up spare change—makes a big impact.

Lincoln Airport Takes Flight in the Fight Against Human Trafficking

Lincoln Airport (LNK) is continuing its commitment to passenger safety and community well-being through its active partnership with the Blue Lightning Initiative (BLI)—a national program under the Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign, designed to combat human trafficking in air travel.

LNK joined the initiative in 2023, becoming part of a growing network of airports and airlines across the country working to raise awareness and recognize the signs of human trafficking. As part of this partnership, all LNK personnel completed specialized BLI training to help identify and respond to suspicious behavior.

In July 2024, LNK took its efforts beyond the terminal by hosting its first Human Trafficking Awareness Event, bringing together local experts, advocates, and community members to share information, resources, and support services. The event emphasized that awareness starts at home—and that airports can play a powerful role in prevention.

Most recently, LNK participated in #WearBlueDay on January 11—National Human Trafficking Awareness Day—with employees wearing blue and part of the terminal glowing in the campaign’s signature color. The show of solidarity was part of a broader month of Blue Campaign initiatives, all focused on educating and empowering the public.

Following its active involvement, Lincoln Airport was proudly recognized by the Blue Campaign on social media and is now officially listed as a Blue Lightning Initiative partner—a milestone in LNK’s ongoing mission to protect passengers and strengthen community resilience.

Threads Celebrates an Iconic 50YearsinDowntownLincoln

THREADS’ style can be best described as a lifestyle outdoor store, carrying brands like The North Face, Patagonia, Teva and more. “It is really important for us to support environmentally friendly brands,” says owner Jane Stricker.

Being located downtown, they also sell business attire. “We have a bit of everything here and it is all amazing quality,” explains Stricker. “There is no specific age group we target, we get customers from all ages who can find something here.”

With a background in fashion, Jane uses her style preferences to curate the store’s offerings. As a result, she has a massive influence on the street wear in Downtown Lincoln. She explains, “At THREADS, we love the statement piece; for us to order something, we have to be wowed.”

THREADS has been a staple in Downtown Lincoln for a very long time, not just as a business but as an active participant in the community. It gives back through shoe drives, food drives and massive clothing donations.

“It is important for us to be active in our community; we take great pride in being located in Lincoln,” says Stricker. THREADS has clarified that its commitment to the city goes beyond fashion.

This year, THREADS - Footloose and Fancy celebrates a remarkable milestone: their 50th anniversary.

Achieving this is no small accomplishment for any business. “It gives me goosebumps,” says Stricker, “and it’s a little hard to talk about. It seems like it started so long ago, but I have done this for so long now that it makes sense. I’m really, really proud. It’s taken a lot of hard work from everyone involved.”

Through years of hard work and perseverance, the company celebrates an amazing 50 years. As THREADS continues to evolve, one thing is sure: the future looks bright for one of Lincoln’s most stylish and beloved businesses.

Community Impact Award

The LIBA Community Impact Award honors those members and others that make the city of Lincoln a much better place to live. Todd Ogden and the Downtown Lincoln Association (“DLA”) are recognized as the 2025 Community Impact Award winner.

Downtown Lincoln would not be what it is without the support and the creativity of our small businesses. DLA looks forward to continuing to grow to support the very lifeblood that makes downtown tick: our local businesses.

Enterprising Gambler of the Year

The LIBA Enterprising Gambler award recognizes the business owner who has taken the bold step to either begin or expand a local business. LIBA recognizes Alex Kringen and Midwest Petroleum Equipment (MPE) as the 2025 Enterprising Gambler of the Year.

MPE specializes in retail and commercial fueling systems. Essentially anything that dispenses fuel or petroleum related products, they build, service, and install.

Lincoln Coin & Bullion recently shared “Gold hit a record high on Friday, April 11, it then dipped over 1% to $3,200… The outlook seems strong and some see a forecast of $3,700, citing a strong central bank demand and heightened recession risks. LINCOLN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

AnnouncingaCitySwapwith Topeka this Summer

The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce is building on the momentum of last summer’s Intercity Visit to Boise, Idaho, with an exciting new initiative: the 2025 City Swap with Topeka. This two-part exchange is set for June 17–18, when Lincoln business and community leaders travel to Topeka, and July 30–31, when Topeka returns the visit to Lincoln. The goal? To foster regional collaboration and idea sharing to strengthen both communities.

The 2024 Intercity Visit to Boise sparked bold conversations and new ideas, while building professional relationships that transcend state lines. The upcoming City Swap aims to build on that success by offering attendees a firsthand look at the growth, success and innovation of each community. We are thrilled to be partnering with the Greater Topeka Partnership once again, and their agenda for our trip to their community offers an impressive look at their incredible momentum and forward-thinking approach to economic growth. The agenda includes:

• A welcome reception, followed by the opportunity to explore downtown Topeka

• A special session with the Topeka Area Sports Commission on how youth sports are driving growth

• A presentation from GO Topeka about their innovative approach to economic development

• An exploration of Topeka’s downtown placemaking projects, as well as their arts and innovation districts

• A firsthand look at how Topeka is reimagining spaces, such as the West Ridge Mall’s redevelopment into a mixed-use campus

• A stop at the Topeka Zoo and Gage Park, with a panel discussion on how those amenities support both tourism and the quality of life for locals

• Valuable networking opportunities with business and community leaders from both Lincoln and Topeka

Your Lincoln Chamber of Commerce team is so excited to present this new opportunity to the Lincoln community! If you have never participated in a trip like this, I encourage you to consider it. As we learned last year in Boise, experiences like this not only expand your network, they also energize your thinking and give you a voice in the future of Lincoln. I hope you will join us as we elevate regional collaboration and thoughtful progress for our community.

To view the full agenda and register for the 2025 City Swap, please visit lcoc.com/cityswap. There, you will find additional details about the exciting programming we have planned. Sponsorships are also available and I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the Olsson for their generous support as the presenting sponsorship of the City Swap. Let’s continue to build on the momentum we have created—and keep moving Lincoln forward, together. I sincerely hope you will join us on the trip to Topeka on June 17 – 18!

Nebraska LTC Pharmacy is a concierge pharmacy in Lincoln, and is truly one of a kind. We are a locally owned business, and this year is our 14th year anniversary! I’m not quite sure how time flew by so quickly, but here we are continuing to grow, continuing to help so many people in our community continue to live at home, and we have a lot of fun while doing it! We specialize in blister packaging and adherence packaging, but we are also a full service pharmacy and anyone can get their medications here. We also have a newly added gift shop, so you can do a little shopping while you pick up your prescriptions! Here you will find some of the most unique and fun gifts in town.

We offer a free consultation to those that want to get set up with blister packaging and delivery. Our blister packaging and delivery services are free. We are happy to provide these courtesy services to our customers. We will even come to you! During this time, we will gather all necessary information, and answer any questions you may have. We are also part of the Medication Disposal program in Nebraska, so while we are in your home, we can take any old, expired, or discontinued medications for proper disposal. Our goal is to prevent polypharmacy, which is where people use multiple different pharmacies and/or multiple doctors that are not aware of what the others are prescribing. We ensure all members of your healthcare team are on the same page, which can prevent further duplications and interactions. This interdisciplinary approach maximizes your treatment plan and optimizes outcomes to keep you and/or your loved ones safe at home and out of the hospital.

The attention to detail at Nebraska LTC Pharmacy is something that is unmatched by other pharmacies. We offer home visits, med cabinet clean outs and so much more! Just give us a call; we always pick up on the first ring. There’s a reason we’re the only independent non-chain pharmacy to make it to the finals of Lincoln’s Choice Awards presented by the Lincoln Journal Star.

We also offer home vaccinations for those that are homebound. We offer influenza, COVID-19 boosters, pneumococcal, shingles, tetanus boosters, and RSV just to name a few.

But don’t just listen to us! Here’s what our amazing customers have had to say:

“Great place! Hard workers and very caring. Go the extra mile to make sure they are helpful, teaching, and moral! Great staff!” - Kelly D.

“These wonderful ladies have such huge hearts they go above and beyond for their customers so caring. This is the best pharmacy. Thank you, amazing ladies.” - Chasity W.

“This is literally the best pharmacy! The staff are wonderful. I can’t recommend them enough. My son & I both have medications that are on the nationwide shortage and have struggled with getting our meds regularly. Before finding Nebraska LTC, we would have to call a dozen or so pharmacies to locate our medication for refills every month. They have been amazing at tracking our meds down and having stock available. They are always happy to help & definitely go above and beyond for their customers. I love to support local businesses and it’s even better that it’s a woman owned business :)” - Joslyn S.

“I am beyond impressed with Nebraska LTC Pharmacy. Being used to the service that comes along with getting my prescriptions filled at the bigger chain pharmacies, I was amazed at how much better things could be using a local pharmacy. I will be taking my business here moving forward. Thank you so much for going the extra mile for your customers!” - Chelsea G.

“I cannot say enough about this pharmacy. They go out of their way to help their patients and make sure their medications are filled on a timely manner and check for drug interactions. I refer my patients to them.” - Dr. Northrop

Access Family Medicine is Lincoln’s first Direct Primary Care clinic, designed to meet clients primary health concerns. Founded in 2016 by Dr. Johnson, the company strives to be unique from other family medicine practices. They’ve achieved this goal by capping a physician’s patient panel at 600 patients. This is a stark contrast to traditional practice where physicians usually have up to 2,000 patients.

The clinic is designed this way so that patients can receive highly personalized care so that the physicians can meticulously focus on the patients concerns. Teresa Novak worked as family practice provider for 30 years. Throughout her time in medicine she has treated and cared for over three generations. She has worked at Access Family Medicine for three years. Teresa believes one of the most important parts of caring for a patient is listening. “Many times, I can figure out a complicated problem just by paying attention to the little details my patient provides.”

Access Family Medicine happily doesn’t accept insurance. Don’t let this alarm you as patients save money as Access Family Medicine Members. Providing access to high quality, affordable healthcare is one of their top values.

Dr. Johnson shares what he’s learned since starting the practice in 2016. “The most surprising thing I learned in the last five years is that patients do not need to spend enormous amounts of money nor use expensive insurance plans to get great healthcare and outstanding outcomes. What we have learned is that people need a relationship with their provider who will take the time to listen to their needs and develop a plan based on their current situation and obstacles.”

With Access Family medicine patients can expect a minimum of 30 minute office visits, unlimited access to your physician, timely appointments and personalized care to make you experience the most comfortable as possible.

SEVERE WEATHER

Weathering the Storm: How Local Businesses Help Face Challenges

From torrential rains and flash floods to heatwaves and ice storms, severe weather events are no longer rare—they’re the new normal. As climate unpredictability increases, so does the demand for services that help communities prepare for, endure, and recover from nature’s fiercest moods. Across the Nebraska region, a new wave of local businesses is stepping up—not just to meet this moment, but to innovate within it. American Family Insurance

We interviewed Ashley Freese at American Family Insurance. She explains what they offer in terms of preparation for severe weather: “As an insurance agent with American Family Insurance, I work closely with clients to ensure they are well-prepared for severe weather long before it strikes. This includes reviewing and customizing homeowners, renters, and auto insurance policies to ensure proper coverage for storm-related events like hail, wind, flooding, and more. I also provide guidance on practical steps families can take—such as creating emergency kits, documenting possessions for claims purposes, and understanding their policy details—so they’re not caught off guard when the weather turns severe.”

But what if storm damage has already occurred? The claims process may seem difficult at first, but American Family Insurance can help. “After a storm hits,” Ashley says, “my role is to be a trusted advocate and guide during what can be a very stressful time. I help clients navigate the claims process from start to finish—ensuring documentation is complete, questions are answered, and that they receive the support they need to get back on their feet quickly. American Family Insurance also offers access to a dedicated catastrophe team and a 24/7 claims reporting service to respond as quickly as possible when disasters strike. Severe weather is becoming more frequent and unpredictable, which makes being proactive with insurance coverage more important than ever. Having the right policy in place—and understanding what it covers—can make a world of difference in recovery. I always encourage people to review their insurance annually and make updates as their lives or property change. It’s not just about protection; it’s about peace of mind, knowing you’re prepared for whatever Mother Nature sends your way.”

Severe weather may be beyond our control, but how we respond— and who we rely on—makes all the difference. The local businesses highlighted in this issue aren’t just reacting to the realities of a changing climate; they’re actively shaping our collective ability to adapt, endure, and rebuild. Their work is a powerful reminder that resilience isn’t just built with bricks, backup generators, or sandbags—it’s built through foresight, innovation, and the unwavering commitment of those who refuse to stand still in the face of adversity. As storms grow stronger and seasons more extreme, so too must our support for the businesses that stand between uncertainty and safety. These are more than companies; they’re our neighbors, our first calls when disaster strikes, and our partners in protecting what matters most. In every stormproof roof installed, every generator wired, every flood barrier erected, and every resilient garden planted, we see not just preparation, but hope.

Because when the skies darken and the winds rise, it’s not just weather we’re up against—it’s a test of community. And thanks to these hometown heroes, we’re facing it stronger, smarter, and more united than ever before.

BUILDING A DREAM HOME

Building a home from the ground up is a bold endeavor—one that demands vision, meticulous planning, and an unwavering commitment to quality. While the sheer scale of the project can be daunting, the good news is this: you don’t have to navigate it alone. In this exclusive feature, we highlight the professionals who specialize in turning ideas into addresses. The journey begins with a conversation—but what follows is a carefully choreographed process involving site selection, architectural design, material sourcing, construction management, interior styling, and often, complex financial structuring. Each step requires a team that not only understands the technical aspects of building, but also respects the personal significance of the endeavor. In a competitive real estate landscape, the decision to build rather than buy speaks volumes. It reflects a desire not just for ownership, but for authorship—for a space that aligns precisely with your needs, your taste, and your long-term goals. And with the right team behind you, the process can be just as rewarding as the final result. Everything you need to begin that journey is right here. Because your home should be more than a destination: it should be the most

extraordinary chapter of your story yet.

Finding the Right Plot—and the Right Advice

Whether it’s tucked into the edge of the woods or perched on a sunny street corner, every dream home begins with a piece of land. Local real estate agents and land specialists are invaluable at this stage, helping you assess not just price, but potential—access to schools, community character, resale value, and zoning considerations. They know the neighborhoods because they live in them, too.

Working with Homegrown Architects

Local architects bring more than design expertise—they bring an understanding of regional style, climate, and culture. Whether it’s a craftsman bungalow or a farmhouse revival, they help homeowners create spaces that feel rooted in place. Plus, they have strong relationships with local permitting offices, which can mean a smoother process from idea to approval.

Sourcing from Small Businesses

From reclaimed barn wood to hand-thrown pottery sinks, building locally means buying locally. Supporting independent suppliers and craftspeople ensures every material has a story—and every purchase supports your community. It’s not uncommon for homeowners to meet the millworker crafting their custom front door or the mason laying the stone for their fireplace.

Building with Familiar Faces

Local builders bring more than technical skills—they bring reputations they’ve built over decades. These are the people you run into at the grocery store or cheer for at the Friday night football game. Their commitment to quality isn’t just professional—it’s personal. Because every home they build is a reflection of their name in the community.

Designing Interiors with a Local Eye

Interior designers and decorators rooted in the region often draw from local heritage and natural surroundings to guide their work.

Expect cozy textiles from nearby makers, art from regional painters, and furniture crafted just a few miles away. The result? A home that feels like it belongs—because it does.

Financing with Familiar Institutions

Local banks and credit unions often offer more flexible and personalized service when it comes to financing a custom build. Unlike national lenders, they understand the nuances of local markets and can offer guidance tailored to your situation. You’re not just a file number—you’re a neighbor.

In a fast-paced world, building a home is an invitation to slow down and do something meaningful. It’s a chance to invest not just in property, but in people—your people. The local experts, the family-owned businesses, the artisans who take pride in every board they cut and every tile they lay. And while the process may take time, it’s worth every second. Because this isn’t just where you’ll live. This is where your story will unfold. And your story deserves to be told—with care, with craft, and with a team who believes in it as much as you do.

Keep Your Kingdom Safe with King’s Inspections

From the standpoint of a Home Inspection professional, Randy King of King’s Inspections, LLC adds, “A General Contractor or Builder who is a teacher— who can educate someone on the sequence and steps necessary to make building a home happen—is definitely someone you want to work with. I also encourage anyone looking into building a house to interview different builders and find one that they communicate well with, who is flexible, and who is able to give them an accurate estimate of final cost. Most builders offer at least a one-year warranty, and most have a clean-up crew that does final detail cleaning before the home is occupied as well as a crew that goes through the house and tests all lights, outlets, appliances, fireplaces, sprinklers, and so on to ensure proper operation. A good builder spells out his warranty; exactly what is and is not covered. A booklet or workbook for the first time homebuilder to use as a guide is also a very valuable resource.

As far as new trends in home building, Radon Resistant New Construction (RRNC) is now the standard in single-family new construction. The smart builder includes RRNC during the design and construction process. We all know we have high levels of Radon gas nearly everywhere in Southeast Nebraska. Using passive Radon mitigation reduces the levels in your home to minimize the health risk from this cancer-causing gas. Installing RRNC during the building process is easy and inexpensive; and less costly than to retrofit a house.

RRNC methods include installing a vapor barrier under the floor, and tying the tile drain system into a vent stack that exits the roof of the house, thereby creating a natural chimney effect to vent the soil gasses (including Radon gas) that may accumulate under your floor. In the event that Radon levels still happen to measure high, it is easy to install an electric fan on the vent stack in the attic space and convert the passive system to an active one; far less costly than to retrofit a complete mitigation system. Even with RRNC, it is wise to have your home tested for Radon gas every two years, as soil conditions change, which changes the pathways that Radon can enter your home, and can elevate the levels.”

Flooring Solutions that Stand Tall

Underfoot Flooring Solutions plays a crucial role in helping homeowners build their dream homes in Lincoln, NE, by ensuring that every flooring installation is done with precision and care. Underfoot understands that achieving a flawless finish with rigid core luxury vinyl and hard tile products depends heavily on proper subfloor preparation. Their expert team is skilled in evaluating and addressing these imperfections to create a surface that not only looks beautiful but also performs exceptionally over time.

What sets Underfoot apart is their commitment to working handin-hand with manufacturer representatives and technical specialists

throughout the installation process. This collaborative approach ensures that all manufacturer specifications are strictly followed, which is essential for preserving product warranties. By aligning closely with industry standards and leveraging manufacturer expertise, Underfoot is able to provide homeowners with peace of mind, knowing their flooring investment is fully protected.

Building a dream home means making long-term decisions, and flooring is one of the most significant. Underfoot Flooring Solutions takes this seriously by focusing on longevity, durability, and aesthetics. Their attention to detail and commitment to quality help homeowners in Lincoln get the most out of their flooring, both in performance and appearance. With Underfoot, you’re not just getting a floor—you’re getting a foundation for years of comfort, style, and satisfaction. Impeccable Insurance

It is important to understand closing costs and insurance costs and how they complement each other. Many homebuyers make the mistake of overextending on a home, and to compensate, they try to cut costs on the insurance and upkeep of the home. This is illogical and not sustainable, hurting homeowners in the long run!

“I sell insurance not homes. I would never want anyone to purchase insurance without a good agent and feel the same way about buying a home,” says Agent of Shelter Insurance Matt Moorhead. “Lincoln has many good real estate agents that work very hard to get homebuyers

into the right home. Finding a trusted agent is the best option, so Shelter Insurance is there for you!” From an insurance perspective, there are a few things of which Matt asks his clients to be aware:

• Flood plains. There are several areas in Lincoln that fall within a flood plain. Homes that are within these flood plains require flood insurance, which can add additional insurance cost.

• Prior water damage. Even if a home is not in a flood plain, several perils still exist when it comes to water and water

damage. Schedule an inspection of the home to look for prior issues with sewer back up, outside rainwater and mold. Roof and exteriors. Many homes have been impacted by severe weather in the past five years, and not everyone gets their home repaired properly.

• Again, schedule an inspection of the roof and attic of the new home before buying! If the home has previous damage that was not repaired, it may not be eligible for replacement-cost insurance or any kind of insurance before repairs are completed. Shelter Insurance understands that buying a home with proper inspection can be financially daunting and a hassle, but Shelter Insurance makes it their mission to make the insurance process as stress-free as possible, all the while informing the homebuyer of the must-knows along the way.

For many, the idea of a dream home remains just that—a dream. It often feels like a distant, unattainable vision, tucked away in mood boards and wish lists. But what if that perfect home wasn’t so far out of reach? What if the design you’ve always imagined, the details you’ve envisioned, and the comfort you crave were actually within your budget—and your grasp?

Across the region, a growing number of trusted local businesses are making that possibility a reality. These companies understand that a dream home is more than just square footage and floor plans. It’s about creating a space that reflects your lifestyle, personality, and aspirations. It’s about making a house truly feel like home. From the first sketch to the final coat of paint, the journey to building a dream home can—and should—be one of excitement and inspiration. That’s why it’s so important to work with professionals who don’t just bring skills to the table, but passion, integrity, and a shared commitment to excellence. These are companies that prioritize your vision, communicate clearly at every stage, and combine innovation with time-honored craftsmanship to deliver results that exceed expectations.

Unlike one-size-fits-all solutions offered by national chains, local builders, designers, and contractors bring something different to the table: perspective. They live in the same towns, drive the same roads, and raise their families in the same communities as their clients. They know the region’s building codes, climate challenges, and architectural heritage—not because they studied them in a guidebook, but because they’ve built their reputations within them.

This local expertise translates to smarter decisions, fewer delays, and homes that feel organically connected to their surroundings. Whether it’s understanding how to position a house for optimal sunlight, or how to choose materials that age gracefully with the seasons, local professionals offer more than technical know-how—they offer lived experience.

Whether you’re laying the foundation of a brand-new build, remodeling a well-loved space, or adding custom touches that make a house uniquely yours, local builders, designers, contractors, and service providers are ready to walk with you every step of the way. From design consultations and financing support to the hands-on trades that bring it all to life, every detail matters—and so does the team you choose. Partnering with reputable local businesses not only streamlines the process but also ensures peace of mind. These are professionals who live and work in your community, who understand local building codes, climate considerations, and neighborhood aesthetics. They’re invested not just in your home, but in the community they help shape with every project. Your dream home doesn’t have to stay a dream. With the right plan, the right mindset, and the right local partners, it can be a practical, achievable goal. It can be a house that’s tailored to your lifestyle, built with care, and designed to last.

Whether you’re just starting to explore the idea or already collecting paint swatches and floor samples, now is the time to take that first step. Not alone—but alongside a team that shares your vision, honors your budget, and brings your dream to life with purpose and pride.

WOMENS HEALTH

It’s officially spring! In nature, spring signifies renewal, transformation, and rebirth. These attributes make spring the perfect time for women to focus on their health and wellness in order to flourish with the new season. It’s never too late to find a new physical activity, switch up a nutrition plan or make sure prescriptions are up to date. These Lincoln businesses will offer guidance to help women prioritize their health.

Women’s health is a broad and vital topic that encompasses the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of women across all stages of life. From adolescence through menopause and beyond, women face unique health challenges that require specialized attention, education, and support. Prioritizing women’s health not only improves quality of life but also fosters healthier families and communities.

Why It’s Vital for Women to Prioritize Their Health

In today’s fast-paced world, women often juggle multiple roles— professional, caregiver, partner, parent, and more. With such demanding responsibilities, it’s all too easy for women to put their own health last. But the truth is simple and powerful: when women take care of their health, they are better equipped to take care of everything—and everyone—else.

Whether it’s having the energy to show up for your family, the focus to succeed at work, or the strength to enjoy life’s moments, good health is the cornerstone. When you prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional well-being, you’re laying the groundwork for a longer, fuller, and more vibrant life.

Staying on top of health basics—such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, and routine check-ups—can dramatically reduce the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis.

Many serious health conditions, including breast and cervical cancer, are highly treatable when caught early. Regular screenings like mammograms, Pap smears, and blood pressure checks can catch problems before they become serious. Make time for those appointments. Your future self will thank you.

Women are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and stressrelated conditions. Whether it’s due to hormonal changes, societal expectations, or life transitions, mental well-being deserves just as much care and attention.

Talking to a therapist, finding support groups, practicing mindfulness, and taking time for hobbies and rest are not luxuries—they are necessities.

It’s not selfish to care for yourself. In fact, it’s an act of strength and self-respect. Women often prioritize others to the point of burnout,

but true empowerment means recognizing that your needs matter too.

Taking time to exercise, eat well, sleep enough, and even just take a break is not indulgent—it’s essential.

Health needs evolve with age. From managing menstrual health in your 20s to fertility in your 30s, to perimenopause and beyond, each stage brings unique challenges and opportunities. Stay informed, listen to your body, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek second opinions.

Being proactive—not reactive—is the key to thriving.

When women are healthy, families, workplaces, and communities benefit. Children learn by example, households run more smoothly, and societies flourish when women are supported and well.

Your health isn’t just personal—it has a ripple effect that touches everyone around you.

Understanding the Dimensions of Women’s Health

Many women experience mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. Hormonal fluctuations during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause can influence mood and mental health. Social pressures, including care giving responsibilities, gender-based violence, and workplace inequality, can also take a toll.

It’s important to normalize mental health care, ensuring women feel empowered to seek therapy, medication, or support networks when needed.

Women are at risk for several chronic conditions, including heart disease, osteoporosis, autoimmune disorders, and diabetes. Heart disease, the leading cause of death among women, is often underdiagnosed due to differing symptoms compared to men. Preventive screenings, lifestyle changes, and regular check-ups can help mitigate risks.

Osteoporosis, which disproportionately affects post-menopausal women due to decreased estrogen levels, highlights the need for

BUILD MUSCLE FEEL GOOD!

A healthy lifestyle is foundational to disease prevention. Nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and stress management all influence longterm health outcomes. Women often balance multiple roles—as professionals, caregivers, partners—which can lead to neglecting their own well-being. Encouraging self-care, mindfulness, and routine health monitoring is essential.

Preventive care, including vaccinations (like HPV and flu shots) and screenings (mammograms, cholesterol checks), can catch issues early and save lives.

Health outcomes for women vary significantly based on race, socioeconomic status, geography, and access to care. Black women, for instance, face higher maternal mortality rates in many countries, including the U.S. Indigenous and rural women often encounter barriers to culturally competent care.

Technological advancements and increased advocacy are reshaping the landscape of women’s health. From telehealth consultations and personalized medicine to innovations in fertility and menstrual products, women are gaining more tools and autonomy over their health.

Moreover, the rise of women’s health research is addressing longstanding gaps in clinical studies, which historically underrepresented women. This leads to more effective treatments and health strategies tailored specifically for women’s needs.

Women’s health is multifaceted and deeply personal, intersecting with identity, culture, and life experience. Investing in women’s health means supporting their potential, productivity, and peace of mind. It’s not just a women’s issue—it’s a global priority.

Here are some of our helpful tips so you can be the best you every day. Whether that’s bustling around doing a million things under the umbrella title of mom, perhaps managing a team of people at your work or simply balancing your work life with your personal life. Sometimes, as women we forget to put ourselves first, constantly worried about the next thing on the to-do list. Well ladies, here is a new to-do list that we can all get behind to take better care of ourselves!

• Stay Hydrated: It is so simple, but so easy to forget. Coffee and soda tends to be a more common go-to nowadays, but drinking pure water is still the best way to go. Staying hydrated helps to keep skin clear, aids with digestion, prevents infections and most importantly keeps your body going so you can keep doing the things you love

• Sun Safety: As the days grow longer and the weather heats up, many people are headed outdoors and into the sun, but remember, not all rays are good rays. Soaking up some sun is good for your health and supplies you with the vitamin D your body needs, however, too much sun can be very harmful. The more often you burn in the sun, the greater your risk for skin cancer. Even if you do not see a burn, UV damage can still ruin your skin. Remember to use SPF 30 or higher (even if you’re trying to tan) every two hours while outside and reapply after swimming or sweating. Wear large hats and sunglasses to prevent sun damage to the face, creating deeper wrinkles and fine lines.

• Mental Health: The winter blues might be coming to a close, but your mental health should remain a priority. Summer time is go time for a lot of people and that stress can take a toll on both your body and your mind. Remember to take a step back and breathe. You are more important than the million and one things that you think you need to get done. Take a day, relax and if need be look into general counseling to take some of the burden off of your shoulders. Perhaps, just finding a friend you can lean on when you need them can be the difference between a good or a bad day.

• Spring Cleaning: You have heard it a thousand times before. Spring cleaning! Well, now is the time to not only clean but REPLACE! We all have that one pair of shoes we wear too often that are beginning to wear past the point of no return. Shoes are

the backbone to healthy living. Even if you are not a particularly active person simply walking or standing for limited periods of time can take a toll on your back and your feet. Having properly fitted shoes prevents blisters and calluses and helps to alleviate pressure. Having the right fitting shoes helps support posture and keeps you on your feet for longer. Treat your feet (and the rest of your body) right and get your shoes properly fitted at Lincoln Running Company. They offer running shoes and walking shoes made to keep you moving!

Women’s Care is Imperative Care at A Well-being

When it comes to health and wellness, it’s important that women stay informed about their bodies. At A Well-being Dr. Casey Bogenrief says that women should pay attention to the state of their bodies and how their body may be changing. Whether that is sitting down when you get dressed, or starting to have to relying on the railing when going down the stairs, or just how efficiently you get from one place to the next.

According to Dr. Bogenrief, people can be at risk for subconscious deterioration, “Schedule an annual functional assessment, just as you do your physician physical, dental cleaning, optometry visit, and skin check. You don’t know what you don’t know,” she said.

At A Well Being, focusing on women’s care is imperative. Dr. Bogenrief points out how traditional scientific and medical studies were performed exclusively on men. However, diet and exercise recommendations, along with certain conditions, are seen differently between genders.

Dr. Bogenrief believes in personalizing women’s healthcare to fit their needs, “men and women’s physical and mental health should not be treated the same. No two people should be treated the same,” she said.

Women can maintain their health by being proactive and improving awareness around what they consume (social media and entertainment included!). Dr. Bogenrief says finding a good support system can help women focus on their health, “let A Well Being help you establish a wellness squad, which might include your own family,” she said.

For Dr. Bogenrief, women’s health is about being proactive in educating all women (no matter the age!) about how to decrease risks and live a healthier life.

stronger,

Dr. Burmeister believes maintaining health is allowing space for rest without feeling guilty. It’s regulating stress through practices like deep breathing, gentle movements, or simply slowing down. Emotional health is equally important, so it’s essential for women to take time to process their feelings and build supportive connections.

Husker rehab wants women to prioritize their health by trusting themselves, “when women trust their intuition and care for themselves with intention, they lay the foundation for lasting health,” Dr. Burmeister said.

Madonna Wellness Club – Invest in You and Your Health!

Maintaining one’s health is important for every person, but especially

for women. Women’s hormones drastically vary depending on the time of day and time of the month. Their hormones impact energy, mood, appetite and how they store fat. So keeping a consistent, healthy lifestyle helps regulate all of those factors and more. Investing in one’s health is investing in one’s future.

Madonna Wellness Club’s has a holistic approach to fitness, health and wellness. They focus on the whole person and the whole body and offer a variety of fitness classes, training services and programs. Madonna also offers special events, like series and workshops that focus on the connection between the mind and body. Whether that be a book study, meditation and intentional rest, or feeling more connected socially. This is the difference between Madonna’s approach and all of the other gyms and health clubs in town.

General Manager at Madonna Wellness Club, Samantha Kelly, recommends women maintain their health by lifting weights and strength training. Kelly says that not only is it crucial to staying healthy, but it helps build bone density, which naturally deteriorates as we age. It helps build muscle mass which is beneficial for a person’s metabolism and other metabolic processes in your body, like burning fat and the appearance of skin.

Kelly says that’s not the only benefit to weight lifting, “Lifting weights and strength training is great for your mental health! It’s fun to lift heavy things once you know the proper form to do so. Get to lifting!”

Take Control of Your Health with Collaborative Medical Alternatives

Everyone’s health is important but as caretakers, women tend to put things off because they are busy with kids, grandkids, aging, parents, work, and managing the household. Regular screenings can prevent conditions from worsening.

CMA uses education and a combination of traditional and naturopathic methods to help women take control of their health. We will work with you to develop a plan that suits your goals. Many women can make small changes to transform their health. Collaborative Medical Alternatives recommends cutting back on caffeine, making time for a hobby and finding an approachable workout routine. Implementing these things help with a balanced lifestyle that promotes health.

Prioritize Yourself with Aspire Wellness

Women are the heartbeat of the home and often the backbone of the business. Whether she’s running the numbers, business, or household - she’s often running on empty.

Your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing affects not just you, but everyone in your orbit. When you are exhausted, anxious, or constantly putting out fires, you may be ignoring your own symptoms of fatigue, weight loss resistance, irregular cycles, low libido, or even digestive issues.

Those are your body’s warning signals. If they are ignored too long, they can snowball into burnout, autoimmune disease, hormone imbalances, or metabolic dysfunction and take even longer to recover from.

When women are well, families thrive, businesses grow, and futures are built.

At Aspire Wellness, Functional Medicine Practitioner, Amelia Pickhinke helps women bring the focus back to themselves.

“I help women get their energy, vitality, and clarity back without adding more to your plate. Through personalized, functional medicine, I look beyond the surface symptoms and dig deep into

the root causes of hormone imbalances and gut health issues, whether they be nutrient deficiencies, stress, toxic load, or metabolic dysfunction,” Pickhinke said.

This isn’t a one-size-fits all program. It is healing your body and honoring your unique physical needs, because what worked for your friend might not be the right fit for you.

What makes Aspire Wellness different is that they don’t just hand you a plan and wish you luck. Pickhinke walks with you, step-by-step, in a way that works with your real life. Aspire Wellness creates a strategy that fits into your busy schedule and honors your responsibilities. It starts with a decision to slow down and say “I matter too.” A decision to invest in your body with the same energy you invest in your business and your family’s future. From there, you take non-negotiable steps:

● Eat real, whole food that stabilizes your blood sugar.

● Prioritize sleep like you prioritize that board meeting or baseball practice.

● Make space for movement that feels good.

● Say “no” more often so you can say “yes” to yourself. You don’t have to do this alone. You don’t have to do everything perfectly. You just have to start. Health is not a luxury - it is your life and your future. It is all too easy to forget that you matter when you’re prioritizing everyone else around you. Taking care of yourself so you can continue to be around for those you love is more important. Choose you!

Just like spring, women can experience a renewal in their health thanks to each businesses commitment to creating a healthier and happier community. Each business empowers women to integrate these practices into their daily lives so their health and lives can blossom.
