A Paige From My Notebook...

As we turn the page into June, I’m reminded of how summer brings a renewed energy to both life and business. The days get longer, the sun gets warmer, and everything around us feels full of potential. That same momentum is what fuels us at Strictly Business—helping our clients grow their presence, connect with others, and build stronger businesses across Nebraska.

June is also a time of celebration and reflection. It’s been an honor to spotlight so many companies that are not only succeeding but also giving back to their communities, investing in their people, and pushing the boundaries of innovation.

Here at Strictly Business, our mission has never been just about print. It’s about connection. We exist to serve as a bridge—between businesses and consumers, between professionals and partners, between leaders and the community. Whether it’s through our magazine, website, or social media platforms, we are committed to helping our clients tell their stories in ways that are authentic, strategic, and—yes—profitable.

One of the most powerful tools we offer is something many business owners overlook: free content marketing. As you’ll see in this month’s issue, we don’t just sell ad space—we build relationships. Our team helps create editorial content that shines a light on the value you bring to your industry. That content is crafted, published, and promoted at no extra cost for our advertising clients, because we believe in amplifying

your voice and positioning you as the expert in your field.

That’s what makes Strictly Business different—and why so many of our advertisers have been with us for 10, 15, even 20+ years. They know the power of consistent visibility. They know that when their brand shows up—month after month—in print and online, it builds trust. And trust, as we all know, is the currency of successful business.

As you flip through this issue, I hope you’re inspired not only by the businesses we feature, but also by the opportunity that exists for you and your team. Whether you’re launching something new, expanding your reach, or simply looking to stay top of mind, we’re here to help.

Thank you for continuing to read, support, and contribute to Strictly Business. And if we haven’t had the chance to work together yet—consider this your invitation. Let’s build something great.

Wishing you a successful and sunshine-filled June!

Laughing Crab Celebrates Grand Opening with Ribbon-Cutting in Lincoln

The flavors of the Gulf Coast have arrived in the heart of Nebraska!

Laughing Crab, a vibrant new restaurant specializing in Cajun seafood cuisine, officially opened its doors in Lincoln with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, May 8.

Come out and see the best women in the sport compete for this prestigious title.

The U.S. Women’s Open often is regarded as one of the most challenging events in the sport of bowling, featuring a 56-game marathon on demanding playing conditions to determine the finalists and winner of the coveted green jacket.

Competitors at the U.S. Women’s Open bowl 32 qualifying games over four days before the field is cut to the top 24 players for roundrobin match play. At the conclusion of match play, 56-game totals, including 30 bonus pins for each win in match play, determine the players advancing to the stepladder finals.

Participants earn their spots primarily through invitations based on their on-lane performances during the previous year. Players also can earn their spot through a pre-tournament qualifier before the start of the tournament.

If you would like to attend any days’ events, tickets may be purchased at the following: www.sunvalleylanes.com/uswo

Owner Ying Yu, alongside her culinary partner and head chef, welcomed local leaders, community members, and food enthusiasts to celebrate the launch of their newest location. Alpha Zed Doubles Down on Client Journey Strategy for Boutique Wellness Providers

Alpha Zed Business Services is sharpening its focus in 2025, zeroing in on helping boutique health and wellness providers—like med spas, aesthetics clinics, and fitness coaches— craft compelling, efficient client journeys that actually work.

After years of building custom CRM systems across a variety of industries, Alpha Zed is getting more specific about who we serve best. Our sweet spot? Service-based businesses where the client experience is the business. Recent wins include onboarding automations for high-end aesthetics teams, building out a referral program for a regenerative medicine practice, and cleaning up backend chaos for a fitness coach.

“We’re not interested in shiny dashboards or one-size-fits-all setups,” says founder Kim Hazelton. “We build systems that feel human and run clean, so our clients can stop duct-taping their back-end systems together and get back to doing the work they love.”

The mission is clear: to bring strategy, structure, and a little bit of magic to the way boutique providers attract, book, serve, and retain clients—without the overwhelm.

The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Topeka Partnership have officially announced the launch of City Swap 2025, presented by Olsson and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas. This two-city cultural and business exchange will take place between the capital cities of Nebraska and Kansas.

City Swap 2025 builds on the success of a joint intercity visit in 2024, when delegations from both Lincoln and Topeka traveled together to Boise, Idaho, to study best practices in economic development, place making, and civic collaboration. That experience not only inspired fresh ideas but also forged deeper relationships between the two communities, setting the stage for this new exchange initiative.

City Swap will bring delegations from each metro to the other’s city for an immersive, two-day exploration of local businesses, leadership, and community development strategies. The Lincoln delegation will visit Topeka on June 17–18, and Topeka will travel to Lincoln on July 30–31.

“We are incredibly excited to launch this collaborative initiative with our friends in Topeka,” said Jason Ball, President & CEO of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. “City Swap is a celebration of Midwestern ingenuity and leadership. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for our members to see what makes each city thrive while forging meaningful new partnerships.”

Attendees will experience local attractions, attend curated programming, and enjoy networking events, all while building lasting relationships with civic and business leaders from both regions. “This partnership is more than just a visit—it’s a bold step toward building stronger regional ties,” said Matt Pivarnik, CEO of the Greater Topeka Partnership. “Lincoln and Topeka share a common vision for growth, innovation, and community pride. City Swap gives us the chance to inspire and learn from one another in a powerful, hands-on way.”

Tickets are on sale now for $500. The ticket price includes transportation, hotel accommodation, and select food and beverage experiences in Topeka throughout the two-day event. Visit https://www.lcoc.com/cityswap to learn more and reserve your spot for this one-of-a-kind cross- state experience.

Carriage Glen Celebrates Grand Reopening with all of Lincoln

Carriage Glen celebrated a historic event with the grand reopening of their newly renovated community. The gathering marked the culmination of an intricate master planning and development process, nearly 5 years in the making. With 30 resident volunteers hosting Lincolnites to an open house featuring tours of resident homes and delicate refreshments, over 175 locals took advantage of the opportunity to tour this independent senior living campus. Built in 1997, the community has been an integral resource to older adults in Lincoln for the past 28 years, offering 51 independent living apartments and a vibrant lifestyle filled with amenities, events, and endless social connections.

The event was capped with a ribbon cutting ceremony put on by the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and a special dedication honoring a beloved couple of Carriage Glen who were the first to move-in back in 1997 and still call the community home.

“Carriage Glen is such a special place,” says Executive Director, Kim Kallhoff. “That’s why our community has always stayed full over the years. This multi-million-dollar renovation is just one example of our ongoing commitment to residents and to reinvest in the community, ensuring that Carriage Glen remains vibrant, modern, and sustainable for years to come.”

The renovation project, which spanned over the last 5 years, was carefully managed to avoid disrupting the quality of life for residents. The transformation included upgrades to amenities inside and outside, as well as new areas to support the active senior lifestyle, including a putting green, bocce ball, and shuffleboard court. “Residents always tell me how much they love the size of our community,” says Kallhoff, “With only 51 apartments, we all know each other by name.”

Carriage Glen offers independent living on a monthly rental basis, and includes three dinners a week, grab-and-go-breakfast, transportation services, cable, and Wi-Fi. Offering a wide range of apartment styles and underground parking, the community supports a carefree-independent senior lifestyle.

“Scientists are just now starting to understand the strong correlation between social connections and longevity,” says Kallhoff, “Here at Carriage Glen we’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of sharing regular meals with friends, engaging in events, and prioritizing social activities. It’s no surprise to me that some of our very first residents, who moved in in their 70s, are still thriving at Carriage Glen 28 years later!”

The City of Lincoln has chosen the Centrum building at 11th and O Streets as the site for its new downtown library, replacing the aging Bennett Martin Public Library. The city plans to purchase and renovate the former downtown mall, currently owned by Southeast Community College, for $46 million—a significantly more costeffective solution than previous proposals.

The new 65,000-square-foot library will feature interactive children’s and teen spaces, makerspaces, a rooftop auditorium and terrace, coffee shop, and expanded meeting and study areas. An additional 15,000 square feet may be leased to educational or cultural partners.

Funding will come from $18 million in private donations, $23 million in municipal bonds, and a $5.2 million interfund loan, with no tax increase planned.

Pending City Council approval, work is expected to begin in 2026, with a grand opening targeted for 2028.

Cheba Hut Blazes into the Heartland with First Stop in Lincoln

Cheba Hut “Toasted” Subs is charting new territory in the Cornhusker State with plans to bring the beloved counterculture sandwich joint to Lincoln. The brand’s first store in the state will open by the end of 2025, with two additional shops to follow.

Aaron and Andrea Remaklus are the homies behind the expansion. This will mark the first Cheba Hut in Nebraska.

With a growing local food scene and a hunger for the extraordinary and unique, the Remakluses believe Lincoln is the perfect spot for Cheba Hut’s toasted subs, full bar and all-around good vibes.

Aaron Remaklus has spent more than two decades leveling up the customer experience game at Speedway Motors, Inc., where he currently serves as Director of Customer Experience. Backed by a business degree from Nebraska Wesleyan and a tech-forward mindset honed at UNL, Aaron’s all about taking great ideas and turning them into even better customer journeys.

Andrea Remaklus knows how to lead with empathy and structure. She recently flipped the script by diving into entrepreneurship, buying a Cold Stone Creamery in Lincoln and boosting sales by nearly 50%. Now, she’s channeling that same hustle and heart into building a Cheba Hut empire in the Cornhusker State.

Backed by a third partner, Dan Remaklus — a seasoned Wing Stop franchisee — the crew is confirmed to open three Cheba Huts, with an appetite for more.

“We’re true foodies, but what really sold us was the vibe,” said Andrea. “Every Cheba Hut we’ve visited had one thing in common: happy people. Staff. Customers. Everyone. That culture is what drew us in.”

The first Lincoln shop is scheduled to open later this year. Locationspecific details will be announced soon, but one thing’s for sure — Nebraska is about to get toasted.

Tax Planning with a Health Savings Account

April 2025 | Strictly Business

We all know that April is tax month but it’s never too early to start planning for the next tax year. Here are a few items to consider for your 2026 tax strategy.

Are premiums deductible? If you are selfemployed, the health insurance premiums that you pay can be deducted as an Adjustment to Income on Schedule 1 of Form 1040. If you are not self-employed, you probably won’t be able to deduct your premiums. Those with very high medical expenses may qualify to include premiums as an itemized deduction.

Form 1095 - If you are enrolled in health coverage during 2025, you should receive a Form 1095-A, 1095-B or 1095-C. The form you receive is based on the source of your health insurance – if that is an individual policy or an employer group plan. The form verifies that you had health insurance coverage. If your insurance was through the Health Insurance Marketplace, Form 1095-A includes the amount of Advance Premium Tax Credit that you used during 2025. This information is used to determine whether you used more or less than you are eligible to receive. This form needs to be given to your tax preparer. If you have an unexpected change in income during 2025, it is advisable to update this on your 2025 Marketplace application to reduce unexpected tax liability.

HSA contributions – If your policy in 2025 is a high-deductible health plan, you can contribute to a Health Savings Account until the tax filing due date in April 2026. You can make contributions for the previous tax year. Your contribution is deductible as an Adjustment to Income on Schedule 1 of Form 1040.

STAR CITY SIX MIKE

Mike Sciandra CHOICES TREATMENT CENTER

Mike Sciandra is the Education and Outreach Coordinator at Choices Treatment Center, and was recently named the Executive Director of the Nebraska Council on Problem Gambling.

Tell us a little about your business. - Choices Treatment Center is an outpatient addiction treatment facility with offices in Lincoln and Columbus. We serve individuals struggling with a variety of addiction and mental health concerns, including substance use disorder. However, we are most known for the free and confidential problem gambling treatment we offer, thanks to our affiliation with the Nebraska Gamblers Assistance Program.

In March, I was named Executive Director of the Nebraska Council on Problem Gambling (NeCPG). The mission of NeCPG is to increase public awareness of problem gambling, encourage availability of treatment services for problem gamblers and their families, and provide resources for education and prevention. NeCPG is also responsible for promoting and answering the National Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-GAMBLER).

How did you get started in the business? - I am a problem gambler in recovery, and have been bet-free since December 2020. Most of my previous career was in sales and management, including operating a freelance promotional marketing business. I was fortunate to receive life-saving treatment from Choices. As I entered recovery, I knew I wanted to help others avoid gambling-related harm. Since I made this commitment to serve, so many opportunities have opened up for me personally and professionally.

Tell us a little about your family. - I have a daughter, Kennedy, who will be a senior at Lincoln Southeast, and a black kitty named Krobus who is spoiled like a baby.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Days off are rare, but I like a good gym workout, hanging out with my daughter, and watching live sports.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I love to chase storms and have taken weather spotter classes.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be?- Dedicated

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - Besides NeCPG, I volunteer with RISE, doing in-prison job and business coaching. I am also passionate about food insufficiency, volunteering with FoodNet and the United Way in Columbus.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read?- My favorite book is The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so (phone/email/business website)?

STAR CITY SIX CASSANDRA

What do you see as one of your biggest turning points in your life? - One of the most pivotal turning points in my life came when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32. That moment forced me to pause and reevaluate the trajectory of my life. Confronting my own mortality made it clear that I could no longer live according to others’ expectations. I needed to build a life defined by purpose, fulfillment, and authenticity. It was this clarity that led me to pursue entrepreneurship, not just as a career path, but as a means to reclaim ownership of my time, my voice, and my future. Compounding the weight of that season, my father was also battling cancer. Watching him navigate his own diagnosis while processing mine deepened my resolve. I knew then that life was far too fragile to be lived passively. I had to step fully into who I was meant to be boldly, intentionally, and unapologetically.

What do you like to do on your day off? - On a day off, I love spending time gardening and working on landscaping projects. I’ve personally designed and completed all the landscaping around my home, and there’s something incredibly fulfilling about seeing that creative vision come to life. It’s both a peaceful escape and a tangible expression of my creativity.

Tell us a little bit about your business… - STATUS HAYMARKET, a boutique located in the heart of Lincoln’s Historic Haymarket district. STATUS is a destination for sustainable luxury fashion, offering a curated selection of luxury handbags, designer jewelry, and standout clothing pieces. All handbags are authenticated, ensuring both quality and authenticity.

The clothing line at STATUS provides unique, wardrobe-staple pieces at a reasonable price, with an intentional focus on individuality. Each clothing item is produced in limited quantities, just 8 pieces per style, so customers can confidently wear standout items that aren’t widely replicated. The boutique blends sustainable luxury with accessibility, offering fashion that is both intentional, impactful and affordable.

Unique thing about me that most people don’t know - One unique thing about me that most people don’t know is that I have a bit of a thrill-seeking side—I did autocross racing in my 20s and even jumped out of an airplane. On the flip side, I’m also a huge NFL fan and never miss a moment of the draft. It’s my favorite event of the year, and I watch every single minute from start to finish.

Who inspires you? - I’m inspired by women who boldly pursue their dreams on their own terms unapologetically and with purpose. Women who lift each other up, who collaborate rather than compete, continually motivate me to grow and show up as the best version of myself. There is nothing more powerful than a community of driven, authentic, and intelligent women supporting one another. That kind of energy is unstoppable and deeply inspiring.

Tell us a little bit about your family - I’m lucky to be surrounded by an incredible family. I married the love of my life, Kevin Smidt (he made sure I used his full name!), and we’ve been blessed with three amazing daughters who keep life fun, full, and never boring. Kevin has been my rock from the very beginning—he believed in me so much that he actually made the appointment to tour the space in the Haymarket before I even said yes. He’s been cheering me on every step of the way.

We also share our home with two unforgettable pups—Bella, our purebred Airedale Terrier who runs the yard, and Sass (short for Sasquatch Princess Sofia), our tiny but mighty Chihuahua with a big personality.

In an industry long dominated by men, McGill Law is redefining the legal landscape—proving that women are not only integral to the profession, but are powerful leaders shaping its future.

Nebraska Innovation Campus

How did you get started in the business? - Upon Graduation from Creighton School of Law I sought work at a small multi-practice firm and was there for about a year and half where I mostly worked with those most in need as a Guardian ad Litem for minor children when their families have an open CPS case. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - The passing of my grandfather. We were extremely close, and his passing reminded me to live in the present and tell those around you that you care for them whenever you have the chance to. I looked up to him as a mentor as he was always a presence for my family even across several state lines. While his passing was not sudden as he was battling metastatic cancer his health care team was also extremely understanding and supportive in me allowing him to make his own decisions while he still could. He reminded me to trust yourself no matter the situation, even when you know you are not at your best because you are the person who know yourself best; that it is okay to ask other for help but at the end of the day all decisions about your life are yours to make.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I enjoy getting out and in nature by going to a park or the Lincoln Children’s zoo with my family. If it is a stay inside type of day I enjoy paper crafting like making cards to send to family for holidays, birthdays, and special events.

Weston Pickhinke ASPIRE WELLNESS CHIROPRACTIC

Weston Pickhinke is the Doctor of Chiropractic at Aspire Wellness Chiropractic + Functional Nutrition.

Tell us a little about your business.

Aspire Wellness Chiropractic + Functional Nutrition is a clinic in far south Lincoln focused on whole-person healing and helping you stay at your best—so you can keep living for what you love. We combine neurologically focused chiropractic care with functional medicine and diagnostic testing to help people truly get well, not just feel better for the moment. Whether it’s spinal decompression, X-rays, InBody scans, HRV testing, or functional lab work, we work to uncover and address the physical and chemical root causes, so you can restore and maintain full function.

How did you get started in the business?

My wife and I both pivoted careers to pursue healthcare. We were recently engaged and discussing how we each wanted different careers for our future. She always wanted to do nutrition, and I’d seen the power of chiropractic in my own life since childhood. We realized we could create something special together , something that treats people like whole human beings, not just a collection of symptoms. That’s how Aspire Wellness was born.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?

Starting a business from scratch, building systems, managing finances, navigating insurance, and still trying to be present with patients, has been the most demanding, but also most rewarding, challenge. An added part of that challenge is being brand new to the area. We moved here at the beginning of 2025, so making up for lost time in making connections while building the business systems has been a grab bag of management decisions.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

Opening Aspire Wellness on April 1, 2025, and seeing our first patients walk through the door. That moment marked the culmination of years of planning, passion, and persistence.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

Choosing to marry my wife allowed me to focus on priorities for the life I now shared with someone. That with committing to leave my previous career path and stepping into healthcare. Changing to a new career required letting go of some semblance of certainty, but opened up a life that’s more aligned with who I am and what I’m called to do, while being able to build up my wife’s strengths in a very tangible way.

Which talent would you most like to have?

It would be amazing to have a savant-like ability to play any instrument. To pick up and play any instrument by ear would be relaxing for me and any listeners. Music speaks to the soul in a way that words can’t, and music has a unique way of helping the nervous system regulate as well.

What is your favorite local Lincoln restaurant?

The red pepper style pork ribeye at Lazlo’s is phenomenal, and the enchiladas at Copal blew my mind.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so (phone/email/business website)?

Our website is www.aspirecfn.com or my number for that is 402230-5773.

One Thread Project — Weaving Hope and Opportunity in the Democratic Republic of Congo

In the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where economic disparity often limits opportunities, one nonprofit is sewing a brighter future—one stitch at a time. One Thread Project, based in Lincoln, Nebraska is a beacon of empowerment, offering women the skills, confidence, and financial tools needed to build selfsustaining careers and thriving communities.

A Mission Rooted in Empowerment

One Thread Project is on a mission to unlock the potential of women through education, business training, and practical skill development. Their holistic 12-month program equips students with more than just a skill—they gain literacy, leadership, and the means to support themselves and their families.

Hands-On Training for Lasting Impact

At the core of the program is sewing education. Over the course of a year, women undergo rigorous training in sewing and tailoring, including internships at local boutiques. Upon graduation, students receive a seamstress license and a sewing machine—tangible tools to start earning immediately.

But One Thread’s approach goes beyond the needle and thread.

Building Businesses and Futures

The business training curriculum is highly interactive, covering key concepts in financial management, business ethics, and leadership. Women don’t just learn how to sew—they learn how to run a business, manage their income, and serve their communities with dignity.

Through its seed loan program, One Thread ensures that promising graduates don’t stop at a certificate. These small loans, supported by donors and matched one-to-one with graduates, provide the startup capital needed to launch new businesses in a country where access to credit is scarce.

Measurable Impact Since 2015

• 450+ students served since 2015

• 200 women graduated from the Women’s Circle program

• 175 Language Student Graduates

• 60 language students currently learning basic literacy, French, and English

• 32+ Businesses have been launched through our Seed Loan Program

• 110 weekly visitors accessing services and support

• 8 local staff members employed at a dignified, honorable wage

A Thread That Connects Us All

The name “One Thread” speaks to the interconnectedness of all people. With each woman who graduates, each business that opens, and each life that changes, the organization strengthens the fabric of the communities it serves.

In a world often divided by borders and barriers, One Thread Project reminds us that a single thread, when woven with purpose and compassion, can hold together a powerful story of resilience and transformation.

Sign Up for Bright Lights this Summer

Summer is here and so are our summer camps... but it’s not too late to still get in on the fun! You can register for one of our summer camp up until the Monday before the camp week starts.

We have many great camp topics still available for all ages where they can be challenged with hands-on activities and spend the week learning about something they find interesting. Camps can fit into almost any schedule-- even around other activities or sports-- as most run for three hours either in the morning or afternoon, Monday through Friday. (But there are full-day camps as well!)

Why is summer learning important for students? There’s lot of reasons! Learning a new skill can boost your student’s self-esteem and confidence. It can also lead to the discovery of a new hobby or a desire to learn more about a topic when school resumes. And having a planned activity during the day can also help students decrease screen time. Plus they can meet new friends with similar interests!

To see all the Bright Lights camps available, visit https://brightlights. org/camps/camp-list/ and sort by the grade your student was in as of March 2025.

And a heads up: We hire our teachers in the fall. So if you’re interested in teaching for us NEXT summer, visit https://brightlights. org/teachers/ to learn more and get on our contact list!

An Unexpected Burden: How Angels AmongUsAssistsPediatricCancerFamilies

Nebraska ranks #1 of the 12 Midwestern states in incidence of pediatric cancer per capita. Nearly 90 families are told “your child has cancer” in Nebraska each year. No family plans for a pediatric cancer diagnosis. Life seems to stop, but expenses don’t. That’s where Angels Among Us steps in.

Angels Among Us’ mission is to provide financial and emotional support to pediatric cancer families living in or being treated in Nebraska. AAU makes critical bill payments on behalf of families directly to creditors. These bills may be rent, mortgage, utilities, car payments, and more to alleviate the financial burden brought on by pediatric cancer. In 2024, AAU financially assisted 127 families with over $700,000 in critical bill payments.

Financial situations change overnight with a pediatric cancer diagnosis, oftentimes forcing one or more parents to leave their job. Nearly 80% of bills paid by AAU are rent and mortgage to keep families in their homes and focused on what matters – their sick child.

“You already have the emotional toll of your child being sick,” one pediatric cancer mom shares. “You just want to be able to bring them home.”

Since 2006, Angels Among Us has supported nearly 800 families with over $5 million in financial support. If you are interested in learning more about AAU’s mission or how you can support, please contact Ashley McMurchie at ashley@myangelsamongus.org or by calling 402-934-0999.

Pastor Tom Barber, PCM’s Executive Director, will once again go without food, sleep, or shelter for 24 hours to stand in solidarity with the homeless and bring attention to their daily struggles.

PCM is proud to partner with Alpha Media for the event. Local radio stations The Eagle, 92.9, KZKX 96.9, KFRX 106.3, The Blaze, 104.1 and KFOR 101.5fm/1240 am will be broadcasting live with appearances from popular on-air personalities throughout the day.

This year’s event continues the beloved Hawaiian theme, celebrating community, compassion, and unity. Pastor Tom will don his signature Hawaiian shirt, and attendees are encouraged to embrace the spirit of aloha — represented by the shaka hand sign, a symbol of friendship, goodwill, and encouragement.

Community members are invited to stop by, meet Pastor Tom, learn more about PCM’s mission, and support the cause. Donations of bottled water will be accepted on-site and are greatly appreciated during the hot summer months.

Celebration and Star City Pride Festival

This June, Tobacco Free Lancaster County (TFLC) will be participating in several community events, including two of the city’s largest—the Star City Pride Events Festivals (June 13–14) and the Malone Center’s Juneteenth celebration (June 21)—to share culturally relevant quit resources and education.

TFLC’s presence at these events is about more than handing out brochures—it’s about meeting people where they are, offering support without judgment, and making sure everyone has access to the tools they need to live tobacco-free and nicotine-free.

Both the LGBTQIA+ and African American communities continue to face disproportionate health impacts from tobacco use and exposure, fueled by decades of targeted marketing and systemic inequities. According to the National LGBT Cancer Network, tobacco use in the LGBTQIA+ community is 40% higher than in other groups. And despite starting smoking at older ages and using fewer cigarettes, African Americans face greater health risks from smoking and are more likely to die from smoking-related diseases than other racial and ethnic groups.

TFLC has partnered with both the LGBTQIA+ and African American communities in Lincoln, sponsoring and participating in these community events going on four years.

If you are able to attend these events, come visit the TFLC booth. For more information, and to learn more about our ongoing efforts, visit TobaccoFreeLancasterCounty.org.

Funding for Tobacco Free Lancaster County is provided by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services/Tobacco Free Nebraska Program as a result of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.

Connected Forever Offers Compassionate Support for Families Facing Pregnancy Loss or NICU Journeys Across Nebraska

Connected Forever’s mission is to support families who experience pregnancy & infant loss or a NICU stay through resources, education, and emotional support. We have served families in Nebraska as a 501(c)3 since 2014.

The programming we provide supports families who are walking their journey during loss, pregnancy after loss, or having a child/ children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Support for families includes support groups, one-on-one mentoring, family events, and private online support groups. Care packages are available to families and can be requested by the family or any friend, family member, or community member.

Connected Forever currently has mentors who visit a NICU in Lincoln to provide support to NICU families and staff members. Research shows that this type of support provided by a trained NICU graduate parent decreases length of stay for the baby, supports parental mental health, and increases staff satisfaction.

Matt Talbot serves over three thousand people annually, with the highest number of services provided peaking in the summer months.

“Summer is by far the busiest time of the year for us,” said Alynn Sampson, Executive Director. “We see many new faces and the number of meals and services provided always rises with the temperatures.”

Matt Talbot is open Monday – Friday from 8:30 am – 6:30 pm, offering respite from extreme weather conditions in all seasons. The risk for heat illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, increases significantly for the homeless during times of high temperatures and humidity. Typically there are between 20 – 50 people in the dining room during the weekdays, with a capacity to seat over 200.

Matt Talbot serves lunch and dinner every day, including weekends. The community can help with this rising demand for services by donating blankets, sunscreen, bug spray, bottled water, and shelfstable items for our pantry such as breakfast items, macaroni and cheese, and soups with meat. Donations can be brought to Matt Talbot Monday – Friday between 8:30 am – 4:30 pm or by appointment. Nebraska marked a significant milestone in early childhood education as state leaders, advocates, and community members gathered on the steps of the Nebraska State Capitol to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Head Start program. The event underscored the enduring impact of Head Start in transforming the lives of Nebraska’s children and families for six decades.

The celebration was led by Senator Teresa Ibach of District 44, who proudly announced the passage of Legislative Resolution 138, a resolution voted yes, by 48 state senators. The resolution honors Head Start’s long-standing commitment to providing high-quality early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families, at no cost. “We all know a good education has been proven to be a key mechanism by which poverty can be eliminated,” said Senator Ibach. “That’s why supporting the Head Start program is essential to me. It equips our most vulnerable children with the tools they need to succeed in school and in life.”

Head Start has been leading the way in developing innovative programs and solutions that help children, families, and communities thrive. Joining Senator Ibach on the Capital steps were Senators Prokop, Hallstrom, J. Cavanaugh, Dungan, Lonowski, Murman, Sorrentino and McKeon. They were joined by a crowd of 100 Nebraskans in a rally for Head Start that was hosted by First Five Nebraska.

CASA for Lancaster County Marked National Foster Care Month by Highlighting Its Role in Transforming Lives

During the month of May, CASA for Lancaster (Court Appointed Special Advocates) joined communities nationwide in recognizing National Foster Care Month, honoring the resilience of children in foster care and raising awareness of the critical support they need.

Throughout the month, CASA for Lancaster highlighted the challenges faced by foster children — including academic struggles, mental health issues, and increased risk of substance abuse — and emphasized how CASA volunteers are helping to change these outcomes.

Advocating for Educational Success

Help Catholic Social Services bring relief to the homeless this summer

Educational instability remains a significant hurdle for children in foster care, often due to frequent relocations and lack of academic continuity. CASA volunteers stepped in to advocate for educational resources, ensure enrollment in appropriate schools, and meet with educators to support each child’s progress. Their consistent presence helped foster children overcome academic barriers and build brighter futures.

Supporting Mental and Emotional Well-Being

With many foster children experiencing trauma, CASA volunteers were trained to recognize signs of emotional distress and provided steady support. By connecting children to mental health resources and offering trusted companionship, volunteers helped promote resilience and emotional stability.

Reducing the Risk of Substance Abuse

Recognizing the heightened risk of substance abuse among youth aging out of foster care, CASA volunteers worked to provide mentorship, stability, and encouragement. By advocating for services and promoting positive community involvement, volunteers played a key role in helping young people make healthy, empowered life choices.

Community Call to Action

CASA for Lancaster called on community members to join its mission by becoming volunteers or donors. With more trained advocates, CASA can expand its reach and ensure every foster child in Lancaster has a dedicated adult fighting for their best interests.

While many people understand the challenges the homeless face during the harsh winter months, their needs are just as critical in the summer. Extreme heat, dehydration, and sun exposure can be just as dangerous as winter cold, yet summer struggles are often overlooked. Without access to cool shelter, clean water, or basic hygiene items, homeless individuals face daily threats to their health and safety.

Catholic Social Services (CSS) encounters the homeless year-round and they know that essential items are vital for survival in hot weather. Unfortunately, donations of these items often decline in the warmer months. This summer, CSS asked that you and your family help make sure that no one is left to face the dangers of summer alone. They ask that you assist their outreach efforts by putting together a summer survival kit for their homeless clients. Items that are needed for the summer include:

● Sunscreen

● Socks

● Deodorant

● Hand wipes

● Bottled water

● Soft granola bars

● Electrolyte packets

● Small shampoo and conditioner

You can put together one kit, or a dozen- any amount is needed and appreciated. Items can be brought to the CSS Lincoln regional site at 2241 O Street during regular business hours. Thank you for bringing hope, and relief, to those in need this summer.

Catholic Social Services is a nonprofit organization that has been around for nearly a century helping people in need of all backgrounds and faiths across 24,000 square miles of Southern Nebraska. CSS programs include Family Support Services, providing crucial financial assistance; the St. Gianna Program; Food Market and Meal Services; Immigration Legal Services and Employment Services. Donate Blood with the American Red Cross for

a Chance to Win Prizes

This spring, the American Red Cross urges individuals to give lifesaving blood or platelets as seasonal travel ramps up. The impact of busy spring and summer calendars comes on the heels of an incredibly challenging winter, during which tens of thousands of blood products went uncollected across the county due to weather. With upcoming holiday celebrations and recordbreaking travel expected in the coming weeks, donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with type O blood and those giving platelets.

Blood has a shelf life of only 42 days. With no substitute for blood and no way to manufacture it, volunteer donors are essential to patient care. Busy calendars can disrupt normal giving patterns, but the need for blood is constant.

All who come to give May 19-31 will get an exclusive Red Cross solar lantern, while supplies last. PLUS, get a chance to win a U.S. trip of choice for you and a guest! Come to give blood in June and get a $15 Amazon.com Gift Card by email. PLUS, get a chance to win a $7,000 prize! There will be two winners.

Friendship Home Expands Services to Include Shelter for Pets of Domestic Violence Survivors

Friendship Home has taken a bold step forward in supporting survivors of domestic violence by expanding its services to include shelter for pets. This new initiative acknowledges the critical role that pets play in survivors’ lives and removes a common barrier that often prevents individuals from leaving abusive situations.

For years, Friendship Home has provided safety, comfort, and healing for individuals and children experiencing domestic violence. Now, with this expansion, the organization is offering a safe haven for the entire family—including pets.

Studies show that nearly half (48%) of domestic violence survivors delay leaving their abuser out of concern for their pet’s safety. Friendship Home is addressing this concern by partnering with local organizations to offer pet care resources, including food, veterinary services, and supplies. Staff are also being trained to recognize and respond to the trauma survivors may experience related to their pets.

“This isn’t just about animals—it’s about honoring the family bond,” said a Friendship Home spokesperson. “Pets are often a source of emotional strength and security. By making it possible for survivors to bring their pets with them, we’re helping more people escape abuse and begin to heal.”

This expansion reinforces Friendship Home’s mission to walk alongside survivors on their journey to freedom, now with every member of the family—paws and all.

A Chance for Sunny Smiles: Big Brothers Big Sisters Searches for Summer Mentors

This summer, Big Brothers Big Sisters invites Lincoln to make a difference in a young person’s life by becoming a mentor. The organization is highlighting summer as a fantastic chance to start volunteering as a Big, especially at a time when many children are still waiting to be matched.

“Summer is the perfect time to get involved,” said Kyle Bishop, Recruitment & Events Coordinator of BBBS Lincoln. “Our community has so much to offer, and with kids out of school, Lincolnites have an opportunity to connect with young people to enjoy activities and moments that bring a lifelong impact.”

Bigs and Littles spend time together doing everyday things! For example, going for walks, getting ice cream, playing games, or attending local events. These one-to-one relationships have been shown to boost confidence, improve academic success, and provide a critical support system for youth.

BBBS Lincoln currently has 25 Littles waiting for a Big, and the number is expected to grow in the summer. Their greatest needs are for male-identifying and BIPOC mentors.

One match, Emiliano and Ciro, bonded over soccer and fishing. Emiliano says that his Big, Ciro, has “taught him how to be a better person”, and Ciro feels Emiliano has taught him “to stay young.” Mentors commit just four hours a month, and BBBS provides training, resources, and ongoing support throughout your volunteer experience. The process is simple, and the rewards are lasting.

LINCOLN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Building Lincoln’s Talent Pipeline with the Return of MyTern in 2025

Just over two years ago, we introduced the Vitality Lincoln Strategic Plan—a bold vision for the future of our community. As we developed that plan, it was clear from the beginning that talent recruitment and retention would be one of the top priorities of the plan. While this focus has long been at the heart of our efforts at the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and the Lincoln Partnership for Economic Development, it is now more important than ever to build pathways for Lincoln’s business community to connect with future workforce.

For young professionals, students and job seekers, career decisions are shaped not only by professional opportunities, but also by the overall quality of life offered by a community. Fortunately, Fortunately, Lincoln offers a wealth of advantages - affordability, a vibrant culture, welcoming neighborhoods and a strong sense of community. The key now is to ensure we are telling that story in a compelling way to our future workforce.

That is why I am so excited to announce the return of MyTern this summer. Launched in 2017 by the Lincoln Partnership for Economic Development, MyTern is more than just a summer program; it is a gateway for students to envision a future in Lincoln. The program is designed to complement summer internships by providing participants with curated experiences that showcase what it is really like to live and work in Lincoln. Through a series of engaging events, interns from a variety of backgrounds and industry sectors are offered a firsthand look at our city’s culture, amenities and community spirit. Participants also receive a weekly email, featuring upcoming events, reminders and a collection of unique things to do in and around Lincoln.

This year’s MyTern program is sponsored by Lincoln Industries, with four signature events that will creatively highlight the unique appeal of Lincoln, while also helping program participants build lasting connections. The 2025 program includes:

• MyTern Program Kick-Off – Swing into Summer: June 11 at Haymarket Park

• Startup Coffee: June 26 at Crescent Moon Coffee

• MyTern to Innovate: July 9 at The Barnyard (Lower Level of FUSE Coworking Space)

• Summer Sip Sendoff with Lincoln Young Professionals Group: July 22 at Bierhaus Maisschäler

We invite all Lincoln business leaders to take an active role in supporting the future of our workforce by championing the MyTern initiative. One of the most powerful ways to retain top talent is to ensure interns feel truly connected in their professional roles and to the community. By encouraging your interns to participate in MyTern, you are helping them explore the full potential of life in Lincoln, beyond the office walls.

Let us help you make talent retention a strategic priority by giving your interns an unforgettable experience in Lincoln this summer. For full program details and the 2025 MyTern schedule, please contact Allison Hatch, LPED’s Director of Talent Development, at ahatch@ selectlincoln.org or visit selectlincoln.org/lincoln-life/mytern.

Personal Banking Like You Remember

For over a century, Lincoln Federal Savings Bank (Member FDIC, Equal Housing Lender) has been doing more than just banking—they’ve been building relationships, one customer at a time. Rooted in Nebraska values and community spirit, this full-service bank has spent the last 119 years helping individuals and families achieve their financial goals—whether it’s saving for their first home, buying their dream home, or simply finding a great checking or savings account

“We’re depositor-owned. That means no outside shareholders and no competing interests,” says Alan LaFollette, Vice President, Home Lending. “We have a long-standing reputation of fostering a community-focused culture. Our customer-centered mission drives everything we do.”

That commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed. Lincoln Federal Savings Bank is the #1 mortgage lender in the Lancaster County MSA , according to the 2024 HMDA report. Their team of expert loan officers are NIFA certified and consistently recognized among the best in the industry, earning accolades like the Scotsman Guide and Champion’s Circle awards.

A Different Kind of Banking Experience

While some banks might feel cold or corporate, Lincoln Federal leans into a small-town sensibility. It’s not uncommon for customers to be greeted by name when they walk in—and that personalized service is something clients remember long after the paperwork is signed.

“You can’t ask for better service. This is the kind of place they will know you by name,” says customer Matt H “They treat you like family, with a small-town feel. It’s great to be treated like a human rather than a number.”

Customer John B., who worked with Lincoln Federal during the mortgage process, echoed the sentiment: “They kept me in the loop every step of the way, making sure I fully understood each part of the process. Their communication was top-notch, and I always felt like a priority. I couldn’t have asked for a better team to work with.”

Growing Community Roots

Whether it’s financial services or community outreach, Lincoln Federal’s dedication doesn’t stop at the front door. From hosting their 20th annual Make-A-Wish Golf Tournament (with a $20,000 goal!) to fun campaigns like Making Branches

Bright, the bank gives back in meaningful, creative ways. In 2025, their annual tree-decorating contest awarded $500 to Operation Super Jack, the winning charity nominated by a local branch.

Their recent open house in Omaha at the new 15858 W Dodge Road location is just another example of how Lincoln Federal is expanding its footprint to better serve the region, while never losing sight of what’s most important: people With nearly 120 years of trusted service behind them—and a deeply rooted mission of putting customers first—Lincoln Federal Savings Bank continues to offer “Personal Banking Like You Remember.” And in today’s fast-paced world, that kind of care is not only rare, it’s invaluable.

LIBA 2.0 – There IS a Place For

EVERYONE

in LIBA!

In the March newsletter to LIBA members, I wrote of “disruptive innovation”, a concept that was introduced by the Harvard Business Review more than 30 years ago. In essence, the automobile was, for sure, a “disruptive innovation” but the buggy whip maker didn’t go out of business because of the new-fangled automobile. He went out of business because he forgot what business he was IN. He thought he was in the buggy whip industry he was actually in the “transportation initiation” business. The whip was used to get the horse going.

Just like the horse a product was required to “get the automobile going” that was equally, if not more vital, to the automobile than the whip was to the horse the crank, and they were notoriously unreliable and broke a LOT. Had he remembered what business he was in the buggy whip maker could have pivoted and been the first AutoZone. They were already his customers. Someone did it why not him.

My challenge to LIBA was let’s not forget what business LIBA is in. Very simply LIBA has always been in the business of promoting and supporting growth. Whether that was through direct or indirect support of small business owners, advocating for pro-business policies at the local level (e.g. city and county), providing networking opportunities or echoing their concerns to elected leaders it was all about GROWING our businesses and GROWING our community.

But it’s also fair to say that LIBA needed to re-focus. To re-focus on the business we’re in, re-focus on city and county issues, re-focus on adding value to members.

In addition to nearly a dozen additional member benefits that have been made possible by leveraging technology, LIBA has taken the following steps to focus on the business we are in.

• Renamed our Government Affairs Committee to Public Policy (Government Affairs just constantly brings to mind Bill Clinton, Elliot Spitzer and if you’re old enough, Gary Hart).

• Introduced the 5 Pillars of LIBA, Public Policy, Networking, Community Access, Business Support and Leadership Development, if a considered activity is not clearly associated with one of those pillars, we shouldn’t do it. (see liba.org)

• Emphasized a focus on entrepreneurship (growth) and local issues (city and county) vs. state

• Moved the focus of our Monthly Luncheons more towards the Business Support and Leadership Pillars (e.g. artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship) and less on politics.

• Updated the Mission Statement on the website to remove references to supporting or endorsing candidates. LIBA, Inc. has nothing to do with that.

• Clarified the multiple entities of LIBA, LIBA Inc; LIBA Foundation and LIBA PAC. Specifically, no portion of LIBA, Inc. membership dues are used to support, directly or indirectly ANY PAC activities. (see liba.org) and all involvement with the PAC is purely voluntary.

• Moved the PAC activities off the liba.org domain and over to the PAC’s separate domain and email addresses, libapac-ne.org

The bottom line is, if you own a business LIBA needs you, and you need LIBA. I honestly don’t care if you vote democrat, libertarian, independent or republican. I don’t care if you vote at all. Or just want to leverage LIBA for networking, that’s fine too. No matter which of LIBA’s pillar or pillars speak to you there’s a place for you at LIBA. What’s good for business is good for ANY business. Hope to see you at an event soon.

Power Ranking the Best Patios in #DTLNK

Disclaimer: Before you dive into this article, this list is purely based on my opinion. I’m not a professional patio critic and didn’t consult a panel of experts. There are roughly 40 patios in Downtown Lincoln, and I am a fan of each and every one of them. To me, patios are a place where friendships are strengthened and memories are made. They are the ultimate hangout spot. You can enjoy nature while simultaneously enjoying one of your favorite eating or drinking establishments.

I fully understand that my #1 might be your #12, but that’s okay. That’s just the beauty of patios - everyone has their own taste. I used no specific criteria, just vibes, nostalgia, and my slight obsession with brick exteriors. If your favorite patio didn’t make the list, I probably haven’t gotten the whole experience there. This ranking is just a fun way of promoting some of the fantastic establishments in Downtown Lincoln!

20. Jake’s Cigar & Spirits - The patio at Jake’s has comfortable, sturdy benches drilled into the ground and stained for lasting comfort. While relaxing on this patio, rich, smoky aromatics drift through the air.

19. El Potrero - Spacious and protected from the rain, this patio is completed with a view of the Haymarket’s busiest intersection. Complete with TVs, you won’t have to miss the game! It’s perfect for soaking up the energy of Downtown.

18. O’Rourke’s Tavern - The patio at O’Rourke’s packs a festive punch. With its seamless indoor/outdoor feel, this space thrives in all types of weather. Rain or shine, this patio is the perfect place to sip and unwind.

17. Canyon Joe’s Barbeque - This fenced-in patio at Canon Joe’s gives you the comfort of your own backyard, featuring picnic benches to sit on. Bright yellow umbrellas add a lovely splash of color. The X-factor for this patio is the nearby smoker, which gives off a mouthwatering barbecue aroma all day long.

16. The Post - Established in 2023, this establishment is still in its adolescence, but it is clear that the owner of The Post understands the importance of their patio. The branding on the large windows is a nice touch, and I love how the brick adds a rustic charm to the patio, which has a modern feel.

15. Blue Orchid - Refined and tasteful, the Blue Orchid patio has one of the best views in downtown, overlooking Old City Hall. The surrounding trees in full blossom really add a layer to this patio’s beauty.

14. HopCat - The patio at HopCat is a go-to happy hour spot—a perfect place to catch up with friends. The glowing string lights, cozy wicker chairs, and a lovely brick-to-window ratio make it a patio that makes hours feel like minutes.

13. The Oven - Another sophisticated gem, this patio stands as an iconic piece of the Haymarket. I’d argue there is no better patio in downtown Lincoln to enjoy a bottle of wine with a loved one.

12. Bierhaus Maisschäler- Brilliantly lit, the “Biergarten” at Bierhaus is effortlessly inviting with a seamless indoor-to-outdoor flow. I am a sucker for a sturdy table and chairs and can appreciate when a place goes the extra mile to add comfort for their guests, bravo!

11. Jack’s Bar & Grill - I still remember my first time on this patio; the sheer square footage and grandeur took me aback. Between the laid-back picnic tables, the yard games, and excellent string lighting, this patio feels like its own little world.

10. Kinkaider Brewing Co - This patio has all the ingredients for a high ranking. With a spacious layout, it can accommodate a large number of people, which is important on game day. The awning and string lights both provide a great ambience, creating a welcoming atmosphere for a good time.

9. Yia Yia’s - Pure vibes- that’s what propels Yia Yia’s through this list. This patio features a great view of O Street and a prime location next to the Bourbon Theatre. Aesthetics do the heavy lifting here, with a facade that feels straight out of Hollywood. Effortlessly cool, effortlessly iconic.

8. Bison Witches Bar & Deli - The patio at Bison Witches boasts a unique and elegant curve. Overlooking Tower Square, the view alone gives it high marks, but the little things really make it shine. When I walked by, the song “Right Down the Line” by Gerry Rafferty was playing, instantly pulling me in. Not to mention, the outdoor fans are a major X-Factor. Temperature control and a rockin’ playlist are some little things that can turn a good patio into a great one.

7. Leadbelly - This classic patio has recently taken a step up with the addition of a fire pit. Leadbelly seamlessly blends consistency with innovation on their patio. I can’t speak highly enough of the character of the old building, which has been an integral part of Lincoln’s history. The brick columns and white window frames are truly admirable.

6. Tipsy Tina’s Taco Cantina - Elevated above a busy intersection in the Haymarket, this patio is the best place for people watching in Lincoln. As you know by now, I do enjoy brick buildings. The colorful umbrellas and bright-colored chairs make a party-like atmosphere. Another note, the music selection here is second to none. The Tipsy Tina’s staff knows how to create a fun environment.

5. Misfits Haymarket - A personal favorite, this patio is tucked in the valley of two brick buildings. Also surrounded by a privacy fence, this patio is VERY secluded. Because of that, when sitting out here, you don’t know where you are. Its long and skinny (alley-like) layout is executed with a tiered seating layout. Each table features its electric fire pit, while string lights and the rich brick backdrop come together to create an ambiance that’s truly one of a kind.

4. Barry’s The Nebraska Bar - This rooftop patio is a Lincoln classic. The Nebraska Bar boasts a stellar rooftop. It checks all the boxes with yard games, comfy seating, and string lights. The newly installed mega-TV is a top-tier spot to watch a game. With a stellar view, this patio is one of the best in Lincoln. Bonus points for on-patio bathrooms and an on-patio bar, you’ll never have to leave!

3. The Mill Coffee & Tea - A two-for-one here: the patios at The Mill, both the Downtown location and the Telegraph District, are highly respected in the community. Not crucial to the ranking, but I couldn’t tell you the number of Irish Cream Lattes I have drunk on the downtown patio. The size and view are what help it rise in the rankings. In the Telegraph district, The Mill’s massive shared patio hosts events like Live @ the Telegraph every Wednesday during the summer.

2. Occidental - This patio is nothing short of stunning - it’s art, plain and simple. The thrill of walking through an alley before stepping into this hidden oasis gives me goosebumps. This patio is quaint and elevated, framed by a tall privacy fence, exposed brick, and beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows. The greenery provides a cozy, lived-in charm that completes the atmosphere.

Honorable Mentions:

• Saro Cider

• Dish

• Gourmet Grill

• Napoli’s

• Brewsky’s Food & Spirits

1. Tavern on the Square - Undisputed. The Tavern on the Square patio has to be number one on this list. The beautiful trees, gushing fountain, and bright blue awnings radiate summer energy. This patio has tons of space and the best golden hour lighting in town. Whether tossing bags or sitting around the fire, this patio is the ultimate hangout spot. I even had my first oyster on this patio. Simply put, it is a place where memories are formed.

Publishers note: I would be absolutely remiss if I didn’t take a moment to mention one of our wonderful clients, Salt Mine City Brewing. In the heart of the Haymarket customers can choose from their fantastic line of beers, variety of food and sit under the twinkling patio lights. Check out Salt Mine City Brewing at 801 R st. #100!

Lincoln’s Trusted Name in Honest, High-Quality Service

Finding a plumbing company you can trust to be in your home—working around your family and your most important spaces—can be a challenge. Questions like “Will they do the job right?” and “Will they treat my home with respect?” are on every homeowner’s mind. That’s where ICON Plumbing stands apart.

Founded by Gunther and Holly Baker, ICON Plumbing was built to challenge the norms of the plumbing industry in Lincoln, Nebraska. After over a decade of working for other companies, Gunther grew frustrated with the common industry practice of cutting corners and rushing through jobs. He envisioned a different kind of service—one rooted in authenticity, professionalism, and real care for customers.

“At ICON, we believe in plumbing the way it should be,” says Gunther. “That means taking time to listen, to truly understand the problem, and to communicate clearly with every homeowner we serve.”

That philosophy has shaped ICON Plumbing into more than just a plumbing company—it’s a trusted partner in home care. From small repairs to large-scale system evaluations, the ICON team approaches every project with integrity and a commitment to quality. Their trained and licensed technicians take the time to assess your entire plumbing system, ensuring they identify the root cause of the problem—not just the symptoms.

One of the most defining characteristics of ICON Plumbing is their approach to communication. They prioritize making sure every customer understands what needs to be done, why it’s necessary, and what to expect throughout the process. There are no surprises, no rushed service calls—just clear, honest service backed by years of experience and a deep respect for their clients.

Lincoln families have come to rely on ICON not only for their technical expertise, but for their values. “We’re not just here to fix pipes,” says Holly. “We’re here to build long-lasting relationships. Our goal is to become the go-to plumber for your family—not just for one job, but for life.”

Whether it’s a leaky faucet, a full system upgrade, or an unexpected plumbing emergency, ICON Plumbing delivers the kind of service that turns first-time customers into life-long clients. In a world where trust is everything, ICON is proud to be Lincoln’s go-to team for dependable, transparent, and genuinely caring plumbing services. ICON Plumbing is the way plumbing should be.

COMPANY RETREATS

When teams step away from their desks, they often discover deeper connections. Company retreats are a powerful way to strengthen team bonds, spark creativity and build company culture, which in turn, boosts productivity.

Strengthen Team Bonds

Beyond emails and meetings, it’s the personal connections that truly drive collaboration. Retreats offer a unique opportunity for employees to connect beyond project-focused conversations and surface-level small talk to build genuine relationships. These relationships can significantly enhance the overall work experience, leading to increased job satisfaction, productivity and well-being.

In daily work life, teams often stay within their roles and have limited chances to connect personally. A company retreat breaks those walls

down and grants employees with shared experiences that create stronger interpersonal ties. The emotional connection that follows helps people communicate more openly and resolve conflicts more effectively.

We spend a lot of time with our coworkers, so forming friendships makes work more enjoyable. Plus, when we care about the people we work with, we’re more likely to show up for them. This makes us more reliable, accountable employees.

Spark Innovation and Creativity

Familiar surroundings lead to familiar thinking. Retreats offer a much-needed break from the daily routine, allowing employees to recharge and return to work feeling refreshed and motivated. It is exhilarating to try new things and gain new experiences, even if

this includes something simple. Rigid routines often lead to a sense of boredom and stagnation, but breaking away from them reduces stress and promotes a sense of freedom and creativity. This renewed energy makes employees feel more inspired to explore new ideas. Retreats generate excitement about life, which includes excitement for work.

Why not get the creative juices flowing with some movement? Activities such as bowling, laser tag, mini golf and sand volleyball are fun ways to get let loose and bond as a team. Sun Valley Lanes & Games is a perfect destination that offers all of those entertainment options, along with delicious food and drinks. They provide everything under the sun to ensure everyone has fun.

Build a Stronger Company Culture

Culture isn’t built over Zoom, it is built through shared experiences. Retreats provide positive and enriching experiences for employees, demonstrating that the company values them. This kind of investment in their well-being leads to increased employee morale, engagement and loyalty.

People produce the best work when they care about what they are doing and who they are doing it for. That kind of passion is earned through trust and is a powerful motivator. A retreat gives teams the chance to realign with the company’s mission and reconnect with the purpose behind the work.

A peaceful country setting offers the ideal environment for this kind of reflection. Imagine renting a slice of country paradise for the day or an overnight stay with your team. Prepare an evening meal in the large private backyard, relax by the hot tub or warm-up by the fire pit. This home includes everything you could need for an unforgettable offsite. All you have to do is send the invites and show up.

Treat Yourself

A retreat is not only exciting for employees but is rewarding for the leadership team, too. Successfully planning and following through on an event like this reinforces a leader’s ability to set and achieve goals. That sense of accomplishment builds trust in both your teams and in yourself.

Retreats offer leadership the opportunity to be present and engage with teams in a relaxed, more human setting. This allows employees the chance to connect with you as an approachable person and not just a decision-maker behind closed doors. That kind of connection builds credibility and loyalty.

It can be daunting to begin planning the logistics of a company retreat. There are so many factors to consider, from entertainment options to the menu, which is why the Talon Room has a grip on so many companies as the perfect destination for a retreat. Aging is a natural part of life, and with people living longer than ever before, there are more opportunities for today’s seniors to lead vibrant, fulfilling lives well into their later years. However, reaching and maintaining optimal health during the senior years requires more than just luck or genetics—it requires intentional choices, preventive care, and a holistic approach that nurtures physical, emotional, and social well-being.

The foundation of healthy aging rests on maintaining good habits and accessing regular medical care. This includes staying current with wellness visits, screenings, and necessary immunizations. Annual check-ups allow healthcare providers to monitor changes over time and catch emerging health issues before they become serious. Vaccinations such as flu, pneumonia, shingles, and the latest COVID-19 and RSV boosters are especially important for older adults, who may be more vulnerable to complications. Preventive screenings, such as mammograms, colonoscopies, cholesterol checks, and bone density tests, play a crucial role in identifying risks early and managing them effectively. Routine vision and hearing exams also help maintain sensory health, which is vital for safety and quality of life.

Nutrition becomes increasingly important with age, as the body requires fewer calories but more of certain nutrients. Seniors should focus on eating a well-balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, and protein are essential for maintaining strong bones and muscle mass, while fiber aids digestion and heart health. Staying hydrated is just as important as eating well, yet many older adults are at risk of dehydration due to changes in thirst perception. Proper nutrition and hydration can significantly affect energy levels, immune function, and cognitive health.

Physical activity is another critical component of aging well. Regular movement enhances cardiovascular health, supports strong muscles and bones, improves balance, and can significantly reduce the risk of falls—one of the leading causes of injury among seniors. Exercise also has a profound effect on mood and mental clarity. Activities do not have to be intense; walking, swimming, gardening, or simple stretching can all contribute to maintaining strength, flexibility, and endurance. The key is consistency and choosing activities that are enjoyable, which encourages long-term engagement.

Mental and emotional health deserves just as much attention. Many seniors face challenges such as loneliness, loss of independence, or the emotional impact of health conditions. Staying socially connected helps reduce feelings of isolation and supports emotional resilience. Seniors benefit greatly from regular interactions with friends, family, support groups, or through community organizations. Keeping the mind active with hobbies, reading, puzzles, or continued learning opportunities can help preserve cognitive function. Stress management techniques such as meditation, mindfulness, and therapy can also promote emotional balance and reduce anxiety or depression.

Chronic disease management is a reality for many aging adults. Conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and COPD require ongoing care and lifestyle adjustments. Managing these conditions effectively involves a combination of medication, diet, physical activity, and consistent communication with healthcare providers. Seniors who partner actively in their care can often experience a higher quality of life and maintain more independence.

Cognitive health is a growing concern as well. While some memory loss is normal with age, more serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias demand early intervention and support. Strategies for supporting brain health include regular exercise, social engagement, a diet rich in brain-boosting nutrients, and managing health conditions that affect cognitive function, such as hypertension or diabetes. Mental stimulation through reading, games, and learning new skills also plays a role in keeping the brain active.

Ensuring that the home and community environment are safe is a vital aspect of senior health. Falls are one of the most preventable causes of serious injury, yet they remain common among older adults. Making homes safer through improved lighting, removing tripping hazards, installing grab bars, and using assistive devices when needed can go a long way in reducing risk. Technology also plays a supportive role, with devices like medical alert systems and medication reminders enhancing safety and independence.

Equally important to physical and mental health is a sense of connection and purpose. Seniors who remain involved in their communities, volunteer, or engage in meaningful activities report higher levels of satisfaction and well-being. Opportunities to mentor, create, learn, or contribute help reinforce a sense of identity and value, which is vital at every stage of life. Community centers, faith-based groups, and local events provide platforms for staying engaged and connected.

Planning for the future is another critical part of senior health. It includes not just healthcare planning, but also legal and financial preparation. Advance directives, living wills, and conversations about end-of-life preferences help ensure that individuals’ wishes are respected and reduce stress for loved ones. Long-term care planning, including options for in-home support or assisted living, allows seniors and their families to make informed choices rather than facing emergencies without a plan.

In sum, senior health is a multifaceted pursuit that encompasses everything from regular medical care to emotional well-being and community engagement. With the right support systems and a proactive mindset, older adults can live lives full of vitality, purpose, and joy. Aging well is not only about adding years to life—it’s about adding life to those years.

As we age, our health needs naturally evolve, making it increasingly important to take a proactive approach to wellness. For seniors, maintaining physical health, cognitive function, and emotional well-

being can significantly impact independence, mobility, and overall quality of life. The good news is that healthy aging isn’t about drastic changes—it’s about consistent, sustainable habits that support the mind and body over time.

At this stage of life, prioritizing wellness can help prevent common age-related issues such as falls, chronic illness, or memory decline. Staying active, eating well, getting enough rest, and engaging with others can make a powerful difference in how seniors feel day to day. Additionally, regular checkups and preventive care ensure that small concerns are addressed before they become larger problems. Perhaps just as important as physical health is the sense of purpose and connection that comes from staying socially and mentally engaged. Whether it’s through hobbies, volunteering, or spending time with loved ones, meaningful activity can help reduce loneliness and promote emotional resilience.

These businesses help seniors prioritize their health. They offer expert recommendations, and highlight simple but effective strategies to help older adults thrive—physically, mentally, and emotionally—well into their golden years.

Get Back to your Healthy Roots at A Well-being

A Well Being is physical therapy reimagined; centering care on injury prevention, rehabilitation, and easier access to healthcare. Dr. Casey Bogenrief’s mission is to take healthcare back to its roots, which was a relationship between the patient and the clinician. A system where the needs of the patient come first.

According to Dr. Casey custom tailored care is most effective for seniors, but there are still practices seniors can do to keep their health in check. Dr. Casey recommends spending an ample amount of time outside. Vitamin D is important not only for your physiologic function but also for mental well-being. Socialization is especially important, whether that is over the phone, on video-chat, or in person, connecting with others can boost your overall health.

The term “seniors” is broad, with age range and functional level varying greatly. The good news is, muscle and cardiovascular conditioning can be improved at any age. So, start today. Get creative with how you stay fit. According to Dr. Casey Yoga is clinically proven to reduce fall risk and improve psychological wellbeing. She is also a registered yoga instructor who provides one on one sessions and group classes! Involve your grandkids. Consistency is more important than duration, so start small, very small, 1 minute a day. Dr. Casey recommends setting a timer for 1 minute, walk outside, press start, when the timer sounds, go back indoors. Recruit your parents/kids/grandkids to do the same thing. Then once a week, talk on the phone or in person about your activity. You check off sunshine, socializing, and physical activity!

A Well Being offers a wide range of services and innovative programs. Annual screens save lives, so they offer annual balance assessments. This is most highly recommended for everyone over age 50 to identify fall risk factors and to intervene and address them. Making sure your assistive device fits properly is another aspect of wellness. Dr. Casey encourages all users of walkers and canes to be seen by a physical therapist in order to have their device adjusted based on their walking mechanics. Additionally, it is critical that an upper body strengthening and postural stabilization exercise program be initiated to optimize proper use and safety.

Dr. Casey comes to you! Many seniors are reliant upon others for transportation to/from appointments. Mobile visits are not only convenient, but being treated in your familiar environment fosters better program adherence and follow through. It allows a deeper understanding of you, your condition, and a custom plan of care that meshes with your lifestyle.

Compassionate Care with Visiting Angels

Ensuring the health and well-being of seniors is vital. Organizations like Visiting Angels play a crucial role in supporting seniors with their mission of helping individuals age safely and comfortably in their own homes. Offering a wide range of living assistance services—including help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, toileting, housekeeping, and meal preparation—Visiting Angels is committed to compassionate, personalized care that allows seniors to maintain independence and dignity.

One of the most effective strategies for senior health is staying physically active. Muscle strength is critical for maintaining mobility and function in later years. “If you don’t use the muscles, you will lose the muscles,” Natalie Leon, owner of Visiting Angels, explained. Routine exercise—especially when done with a companion—not only improves physical health but also boosts mental well-being. In fact, the National Institute of Health found that seniors who exercised with others were significantly more likely to stay active and mentally fit.

Nutrition is another pillar of senior wellness. Aging can often lead to changes in eating habits, with many seniors opting for light snacks instead of balanced meals. Caregivers at Visiting Angels help by preparing nutritious, portioned meals and snacks to ensure that seniors receive the nourishment they need to stay healthy and energized.

With a holistic approach focused on physical activity, healthy eating, and compassionate support, Visiting Angels helps older adults thrive in their golden years—right from the comfort of home.

Their goal is to help every patient achieve better balance, mobility, and overall well-being in a caring and supportive environment.

At Husker Rehab, they believe that proactive care is the key to aging well. Staying active through regular movement—such as walking, light strength training, and balance exercises—can greatly improve mobility and reduce the risk of falls. Set a goal for 30 minutes of physical movement a day! Nutrition also plays a critical role; a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables supports both physical and cognitive health.

Social connection is just as important. Maintaining strong relationships with friends, family, and neighbors helps prevent loneliness and supports emotional well-being. Keeping the mind sharp through mentally stimulating activities like puzzles, board games, or reading can also promote long-term cognitive function.

Quality sleep is essential too—aiming for about eight hours of restful sleep each night helps the body recharge and recover. Lastly, staying well-hydrated becomes increasingly important with age, supporting everything from energy levels to joint health.

Husker Rehab encourages seniors to embrace these habits as part of a well-rounded, healthy lifestyle.

They also encourage seniors to find enjoyable hobbies and connect with others through group activities. And don’t forget those regular check-ups—staying on top of wellness visits can catch small health concerns before they become big issues.

Aging is a natural part of life, but how we age is often shaped by the choices we make each day. By staying active, eating well, nurturing social connections, and staying mentally engaged, seniors can maintain their independence, enhance their quality of life, and continue doing the things they love. These businesses not only offer sound advice but provide older adults with personalized care and wellness programs designed to meet their unique needs. Empowering Seniors

to Thrive through Holistic Health and Support

As we reach the later stages of life, our health becomes a deeply personal journey—one that reflects not only our genetics and past experiences but also our daily choices, mindset, and the support systems we cultivate. Senior health is multifaceted. It is not merely about treating ailments as they arise, but about embracing a proactive, informed, and compassionate approach to aging that prioritizes physical vitality, emotional well-being, cognitive sharpness, and social connectedness.

One of the most important takeaways for older adults is the value of preventive care. While chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis may become more common with age, early detection and consistent management can drastically improve outcomes. Routine screenings, annual wellness visits, vaccinations, and preventive measures such as fall risk assessments and bone density tests play a crucial role in protecting long-term health. By partnering with healthcare providers and staying on top of recommended checkups, seniors can take control of their health and gain peace of mind. Equally essential is the role of nutrition and physical activity. A wellbalanced diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats supports immune function, maintains energy levels, and reduces the risk of disease. Combined with regular physical activity—whether it’s walking, swimming, stretching, or light strength training—these habits can preserve mobility, improve cardiovascular health, and enhance mood. The goal isn’t perfection, but consistency. Small, sustainable changes over time can lead to significant benefits.

Exercise not only helps to preserve mobility and balance but also improves mood and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression. Seniors who move more tend to feel better physically and mentally, underscoring the importance of integrating movement into daily routines in ways that are safe, enjoyable, and sustainable. However, senior health extends beyond the physical body. Mental and emotional well-being are critical pillars of healthy aging. Feelings of isolation, grief, depression, and anxiety are all too common among older adults, particularly after major life changes such as retirement, the loss of a spouse, or children moving away. These emotions, while natural, deserve attention and support. Engaging in meaningful activities, cultivating hobbies, joining community or faith-based groups, and maintaining close relationships can all act as powerful buffers against loneliness and despair. When necessary, professional mental health support—through therapy, counseling, or support groups—can provide tools for resilience and healing.

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in supporting senior health and independence. From wearable fitness trackers that monitor heart rate and movement, to smart home devices that assist with daily tasks and enhance safety, modern technology offers tools that empower older adults to manage their health more effectively.

Telehealth appointments, medication reminder apps, and virtual social platforms make it easier for seniors to stay connected with both healthcare providers and loved ones, bridging the gap between independence and necessary support.

Financial well-being is another critical, yet often overlooked, aspect of senior health. Managing retirement income, navigating Medicare or Medicaid, and planning for long-term care can be complex. Financial counseling and resources tailored to older adults help reduce stress and ensure they have access to the care they need. Informed planning also allows seniors to remain independent longer and make decisions based on personal values rather than emergency circumstances.

Spiritual health and a sense of inner peace are also integral to a fulfilling life. Whether through religious practice, mindfulness, nature, or artistic expression, nurturing the spirit can bring comfort, reduce anxiety, and increase feelings of gratitude and contentment. Many senior communities and organizations offer spiritual support or space for reflection, recognizing its importance in overall well-being.

The role of caregivers cannot be overstated. Whether family members or professional aides, caregivers provide critical support, often acting as the bridge between independence and assistance. Offering them resources, respite care, and emotional support is essential—not only for their well-being but for the continued care of the senior. Empowered caregivers help create a stable, loving environment where older adults can thrive.

Cognitive health, too, should be a priority. Memory changes are normal with age, but there is growing evidence that lifestyle choices can influence brain health. Staying mentally active through reading, puzzles, games, learning new skills, or even taking up a new language can help keep the brain sharp. Additionally, getting enough sleep, managing stress, staying socially engaged, and maintaining cardiovascular health all contribute to better cognitive outcomes.

It’s also important to acknowledge that health is not solely the responsibility of the individual. Families, caregivers, healthcare providers, and communities all play a role in creating supportive environments that promote senior well-being. This includes advocating for accessible transportation, affordable healthcare, age-friendly housing, and inclusive community spaces that encourage physical activity and social engagement. When we value and invest in our elders, we not only enrich their lives—we strengthen our entire society.

Ultimately, aging is not something to be feared or avoided—it is a natural, meaningful stage of life that holds immense potential for growth, reflection, connection, and joy. By embracing a holistic approach to health—one that addresses the full spectrum of physical, emotional, mental, and social needs—older adults can experience greater independence, purpose, and fulfillment.

Finally, it’s important to celebrate the strength, wisdom, and contributions of older adults. A society that values its seniors is one that fosters inclusion, respect, and engagement. Encouraging intergenerational connections, promoting positive aging narratives, and creating opportunities for older adults to share their stories and skills enriches communities and helps seniors feel seen, heard, and valued.

Promoting senior health is not just about extending life, but about enhancing the quality of those later years. With the right support, access to care, and community involvement, older adults can continue to lead active, fulfilling lives. By prioritizing wellness at every stage, we help ensure that aging is not a burden, but a chapter full of strength, purpose, and dignity.

Together, through thoughtful care, supportive services, and a culture that honors aging, we can help older adults not just live longer—but live better.

COMMERCIAL REMODELING

In the dynamic world of business, change is not just inevitable, it’s imperative. Companies are constantly evolving to keep pace with shifting consumer expectations, emerging technologies, economic pressures, and evolving regulatory standards. Yet, amid all this flux, one factor remains critical to a company’s success and sustainability: its physical environment. Whether it’s a bustling retail storefront, a sleek corporate office, a high-traffic restaurant, or a multifunctional industrial facility, the built environment plays a crucial role in shaping experiences, influencing behaviors, and ultimately driving performance. This is where commercial remodeling becomes an essential strategy, not only to stay competitive but to lead with vision and innovation.

Commercial remodeling refers to the process of renovating, updating, or reconfiguring commercial buildings to better meet the current and future needs of a business. Unlike new construction, which starts from scratch, remodeling involves breathing new life into existing structures — revitalizing underutilized spaces, modernizing outdated interiors, improving energy efficiency, ensuring compliance with current codes, and adapting to new functional requirements. It’s about turning “what is” into “what could be,” all while preserving the foundation of what a business has already built.

At its core, commercial remodeling is about transformation. But this transformation is rarely superficial. While aesthetic upgrades such as fresh paint, new flooring, and updated fixtures certainly enhance visual appeal, the true impact of remodeling is often structural, strategic, and deeply tied to long-term business goals. A well-planned remodel can enhance customer experiences, increase employee satisfaction and productivity, reduce operational costs,

and reflect a company’s evolving brand identity. In fact, for many organizations, a thoughtful remodeling project can mean the difference between stagnation and growth.

Consider, for instance, the impact of layout and design on workplace productivity. In the post-pandemic era, more companies are embracing hybrid work models, requiring spaces that are both flexible and functional. Open-concept offices, collaborative meeting zones, quiet focus areas, and integrated technology are no longer luxuries — they’re necessities. Similarly, for retail environments, a remodel might involve reimagining the customer journey, implementing omni-channel solutions, or creating Instagram-worthy design moments that draw people in and encourage them to linger. In restaurants and hospitality settings, remodeling can be the catalyst for a brand refresh, enhanced guest comfort, and improved operational flow. Across all sectors, remodeling enables businesses to align their physical space with their strategic vision.

Beyond functionality and branding, another critical driver of commercial remodeling is sustainability. Today’s businesses face growing pressure — from both consumers and regulators — to reduce their environmental impact. Through remodeling, companies can implement green building practices, such as installing energy-efficient HVAC systems, upgrading insulation and windows, integrating LED lighting, and using sustainable building materials. These improvements not only contribute to environmental responsibility but can also lead to significant cost savings in the long run. Remodeling provides an opportunity to future-proof buildings against rising energy costs and stricter environmental regulations, while also meeting the growing demand for corporate social responsibility.

Accessibility and compliance are also key considerations. As building codes and ADA regulations continue to evolve, commercial properties must be updated to ensure they are accessible and safe for everyone. Remodeling can address issues such as outdated entrances, inaccessible restrooms, or inadequate lighting and signage, creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for employees,

customers, and visitors alike. In doing so, businesses not only avoid costly fines and legal issues but also demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Of course, the decision to undertake a commercial remodeling project is not one to be made lightly. It requires careful planning, a clear understanding of goals and priorities, a realistic budget, and coordination with a wide range of stakeholders — from architects and designers to contractors, code officials, and end users. The process can be complex and time-consuming, involving everything from permits and inspections to scheduling and phased construction plans. But when executed thoughtfully, a commercial remodel can deliver transformative results that far outweigh the investment.

In this article, we’ll delve into the many dimensions of commercial remodeling — from identifying the right time to remodel, to setting a strategic vision, selecting the right team, navigating the design and construction phases, and measuring the long-term ROI. We’ll explore current trends driving commercial design — such as biophilic elements, smart building technology, adaptive reuse, and wellnesscentered design — and offer insights from industry experts on how to approach your project with confidence and clarity.

Whether you’re a small business owner looking to refresh your space, a property manager overseeing a multi-tenant building, or a corporate executive spearheading a major transformation, understanding the power and potential of commercial remodeling is the first step toward creating spaces that don’t just meet the needs of today, but inspire the possibilities of tomorrow.

Proudly employee-owned since its founding in 1954, Cheever Construction continues to lead the way in both new construction and commercial remodeling, serving a diverse range of clients across

Medical, Office, Educational (K-12), and Religious sectors.

While many construction firms focus on one specific niche, Cheever takes a broader approach, offering deep experience across a range of project types. This versatility has made them a reliable partner for clients with unique and complex needs. Whether it’s building a new medical clinic equipped with the latest healthcare technology, transforming an outdated school into a flexible learning environment, or restoring a historic church with modern amenities while preserving its character, Cheever delivers thoughtful, high-quality results.

This adaptability is a direct reflection of the company’s commitment to meeting clients where they are and helping them realize their vision—no matter the size or scope of the project. With every job, Cheever brings the same level of detail-oriented craftsmanship, budget discipline, and project transparency that have defined the firm for over 70 years.

One of Cheever Construction’s greatest strengths is its employeeowned structure. This model creates a culture where every employee, from the project manager to the site superintendent, acts with the mindset of an owner. It means every project is personal. Every success is shared. And every challenge is tackled with a collective sense of responsibility.

“Being an employee-owned company provides our clients the confidence that they have owners working on their project every day,” notes a Cheever spokesperson. This results in higher quality outcomes, better communication, and long-term client relationships built on trust.

The construction industry is undergoing a digital revolution, and Cheever is embracing the change head-on. The company recently adopted ProCore, a leading project management platform that brings together everything from accounting and estimating to field coordination and client communication under a single, cloud-based system.

This technological investment helps streamline operations and ensures everyone—from architects and subcontractors to clients—has realtime access to the information they need. As we conclude this deep dive into the world of commercial remodeling, one undeniable truth stands out: no successful remodeling project happens in isolation. While vision, creativity, and business strategy lay the groundwork, it is the construction company — the team of experts that brings concepts into reality — that serves as the cornerstone of any commercial remodeling endeavor. Their experience, precision, and leadership are not just important — they are essential.

Commercial remodeling is a complex process that requires a high level of coordination, technical knowledge, and practical expertise. From structural adjustments and mechanical upgrades to safety compliance and scheduling logistics, construction companies shoulder the responsibility of turning design plans into physical, functioning spaces. Without their guidance, even the most thoughtfully designed projects risk falling short — plagued by delays, budget overruns, or unforeseen complications. Simply put, construction professionals are the engine that powers a project from dream to done.

In today’s fast-paced commercial environment, where time is money and every square foot counts, partnering with a skilled and reliable construction company can be the single most influential decision a business owner or property manager makes during a remodel. These firms don’t just execute plans — they provide the insights, problem-solving skills, and project management capabilities that keep remodeling efforts on track and aligned with business goals.

Take, for example, the early planning stages. An experienced commercial contractor can offer critical input during pre-construction — identifying potential cost-saving opportunities, flagging design challenges before they become costly setbacks, and helping to develop a realistic timeline based on the scope of work. They understand how to interpret architectural plans with a builder’s eye, ensuring that concepts are not only innovative but buildable. This early involvement helps prevent inefficiencies, ensures better budget adherence, and creates a smoother experience overall.

During construction itself, the value of a professional construction team becomes even more apparent. From obtaining permits and coordinating subcontractors to maintaining safety protocols and minimizing disruptions to daily operations, the general contractor is at the helm — managing dozens of moving parts with precision and discipline. For occupied spaces like offices, retail stores, restaurants, or medical facilities, their ability to phase work, maintain cleanliness, and communicate clearly with stakeholders can mean the difference between a successful remodel and a stressful one.

Moreover, in today’s highly regulated construction environment, commercial remodels are subject to a wide array of local building codes, ADA compliance regulations, zoning laws, fire safety standards, and sustainability requirements. A seasoned construction company knows how to navigate these regulations and ensure every aspect of the remodel meets legal standards — protecting the business from costly penalties or forced rework. Their attention to detail and commitment to code compliance gives owners peace of mind, knowing their space is not just beautiful, but safe and lawful.

Construction companies also play a vital role in helping businesses pursue energy efficiency and sustainability goals. Through thoughtful material sourcing, energy-conscious systems, and environmentally responsible construction practices, they can transform outdated spaces into high-performing, future-ready environments. And because these firms often work with the latest construction technologies — from Building Information Modeling (BIM) to advanced scheduling and budgeting software — they bring a level of transparency and precision that benefits everyone involved.

But beyond logistics and technical expertise, the most valuable contribution of a great construction company lies in its partnership mentality. They are collaborators, advisors, and problem-solvers. They understand that a commercial remodel isn’t just a project — it’s a critical business decision that impacts customers, employees, and the bottom line. They know how to listen, how to communicate, and how to stay flexible when circumstances shift. And most importantly, they take pride in delivering a finished product that supports a business’s success long after the construction dust has settled.

Technology is rapidly reshaping the commercial remodeling landscape, bringing new levels of efficiency, precision, and creativity to the process. Tools like 3D scanning, Building Information Modeling (BIM), and virtual reality walkthroughs allow stakeholders to visualize and tweak designs before a single wall is moved. Smart construction management software keeps every phase transparent and on schedule, while digital collaboration platforms ensure real-time communication between teams. These innovations not only reduce the risk of costly errors but also empower business owners to make more informed decisions, fostering a greater sense of control and confidence throughout the project.

Another compelling trend in commercial remodeling is adaptive reuse — the practice of repurposing existing buildings for new functions. As urban centers become more developed and sustainability takes center stage, businesses are increasingly opting to transform older properties rather than build new ones. Former warehouses become modern coworking spaces, historic buildings are reborn as boutique hotels, and old storefronts are turned into vibrant community hubs. Adaptive reuse preserves architectural character while breathing new life into neighborhoods, offering a cost-effective and environmentally responsible alternative to demolition and new construction.

In any commercial remodeling effort, aesthetics and functionality must go hand in hand. A visually stunning space that lacks practical usability can hinder operations, just as a purely utilitarian layout may fail to inspire customers or staff. The most successful remodels find the sweet spot between beauty and utility — spaces that look great and work even better. This balance requires close collaboration between designers and contractors, as well as a deep understanding of how a space will be used day to day. Elements such as natural lighting, acoustics, circulation flow, and ergonomic design must all be thoughtfully integrated to create environments that truly serve their purpose.

For businesses that cannot afford to shut down during renovations, phased construction becomes a crucial strategy. This approach involves breaking the remodel into manageable segments, allowing operations to continue in one area while work progresses in another. Although phased construction can extend timelines slightly, it significantly reduces disruption to customers and employees. Successful phased remodeling requires meticulous scheduling, clear communication, and a construction team experienced in working around active operations. In industries such as healthcare, hospitality, and retail, this level of coordination is essential to ensure safety and maintain service continuity.

In leased commercial properties, remodeling projects often fall under the category of tenant improvements (TIs). These enhancements, negotiated between landlords and tenants, are designed to tailor the space to the tenant’s specific operational needs. Navigating TI agreements requires a clear understanding of lease terms, including who bears the cost of improvements and what approvals are necessary. Landlords may offer allowances or concessions to support remodeling efforts, especially if the updates increase the property’s long-term value. Open communication and legal clarity between tenant, landlord, and construction team are vital to avoid misunderstandings and ensure a smooth project.

Ultimately, commercial remodeling is not just about fixing what’s broken or updating what’s outdated — it’s about building for the future. Businesses that invest in remodeling are signaling a commitment to adaptability, innovation, and growth. They are creating spaces that reflect who they are now and who they aspire to be.

In a time when businesses are striving to innovate, adapt, and stand out in crowded markets, remodeling is more than an upgrade — it’s a transformation. And no transformation is complete without the craftsmanship, coordination, and commitment of a construction team that knows how to build with purpose. Their role doesn’t end when the walls go up or the lights turn on. In many ways, it begins there — in the lasting impact their work has on a business’s ability to thrive in the years to come.
