There’s Nothing Scary About a Partnership that Works and Works FOR You!
Somehow it's already October and, just like that, we're getting ready to turn the page on 2022. While many people dub October "spooky season" because of Halloween, I think the scariest thing about this month is the realization of another year coming to an end and just how fast time flies by. This awareness reminds me to ask myself, am I making the most of the time I have? I'm sure this a question many of you ask yourself regularly as well. A quote by William Penn comes to mind: "Time is what we want the most, but what we use worst."
Obviously, as a small business owner, my days and years are heavily consumed by my work. Being a business owner has been the most challenging and sacrificial endeavor of my life. I missed out on a lot of moments in my two sons' lives as they were growing up. I was focused on growing the magazine and keeping it above water, which is a never-ending pursuit, even after 29 years in business.
However, even through all of the ups and downs of it all, I'm content knowing that I'm right where I'm supposed to be and doing what I'm passionate about. I've also come to realize more and more that, even though I'm proud of the impact and legacy that Strictly Business is creating, at the end of the day it's about the relationships it cultivates. In my own life, what's most important is my family and friends. The people we touch in our lives is what gives our life its purpose.
Strictly Business is designed to bring people together. We want to be more than just a business magazine or local news source, we want to be a partner to our clients and a connector in the community.
I believe that what our advertisers appreciate the most about Strictly Business is not only that the advertising itself works, but our team is working FOR THEM. We're here to tell your story, lift up your business or organization, and help you grow in the process. We do this by communicating with our clients every month and really getting to know their brand identity so that we can do the majority of the legwork for them—from design services to professional writing—and we do all of this without charging extra around every corner. Our clients pay for advertising space in the magazine, then right then and there they become our partner, and a partnership with Strictly Business means we are here to work for you.
"So while it's a little scary to think about how fast time can pass us by, there isn't anything scary about partnering with Strictly Business!"
So while it's a little scary to think about how fast time can pass us by, there isn't anything scary about partnering with Strictly Business . Please connect with me if you want to learn more about all of the value we offer our clients, in print, online, on social media, and so many other ways.
Enjoy the time you have! Especially with the holidays upon on, take a moment to be grateful and present with the people who matter most. Remember, we work so that we can enjoy our lives—our lives should not be dictated by our work. When your work and your life can exist in harmony with each other and you experience enjoyment and fulfillment from both, you're doing it right.
Let Strictly Business help you lock in your status as THE ExPErT in your industry, utilizing print, the internet, and social media. Find out how by contacting Paige at (402) 466-3330.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, so it’s a perfect time to talk about one of Omaha’s best technology security companies – Scantron technology Solutions (StS).
STS provides a variety of cybersecurity services including vulnerability assessment, threat detection, security awareness training, password management/multi-factor authentication, nextgen anti-virus, firewall management and more.
STS works with companies of all sizes, from large corporations to small businesses and can provide value ranging from comprehensive network and security management to out-sourced point solutioins such as print management.
“Regardless of customer size or vertical, good security posture really depends on prudent management of fundamental concepts such as user training, regular assessment, active threat detection, perimeter management, access management, patching and other basic network principles,” said Vern Kathol, VP of Solutions.
Vern’s responsibilities include the evolution of service offerings and making sure their services align with market needs. This is why STS partners with the top security firms out there. These firms provide the platform that monitors the security posture for Scantron’s customers.
“We’re making sure we’re staying on the ‘Bleeding Edge’ of security platforms, evolving from the past age of run-of-the-mill antivirus with next-gen security, constant monitoring, and sorting of threats,” said Vern. “At Scantron Technology Solutions, we build, partner, and acquire to expand services.”
STS strives to be pro-active rather than reactive in the security industry. Everything revolves around technology, so most companies are in need the proper controls. STS can assess, make recommendations and provide the tools and support a business needs to stay secure.
“As an IT solutions provider, we have a broad view of IT and security challenges,” said Vern. “We’ve created solution packages that bring in a standard set of security solutions that a customer needs in a modern IT department.”
STS knows the importance of having multiple solutions to their customers’ security issues.
“We really listen to our customers’ needs and wants,” said Marquise Davis, Manager of Cybersecurity Services. “It’s important to understand what their end-goals are so that we can provide the right feedback. Good security strategy is a partnership between the customer and a solution provider like Scantron Technology Solutions. At the end of the day, our customers dictate the market, so we need to meet them where they are.”
The biggest mistake a business can make is thinking that an IT and/ or cybersecurity issue won’t affect them.
“A lot of businesses don’t think it’ll happen to them, small businesses especially,” said Michelle Travis, Director of Marketing. “You hear about all these corporations getting hacked, but it happens to small businesses just as often—it’s just not publicized to the same degree, so many think they can go without.”
You don’t have to change your business model or increase your IT staff level or administrative overhead. Through STS’s fixed-cost, fullservice support model, you can tap a responsive team of experts who share your goals for security, performance, and availability.
You can trust your core productivity applications to Scantron as well. They are a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner and a leading implementer of Microsoft Office 365. Burns & McDonnell Completes Water Supply Project with The Village of Homewood
Burns & McDonnell project team members and The Village of Homewood leaders recently celebrated completion of a $12.25 million design-build project to transition the community’s water to a new supplier. This allows the village to continue providing safe and sustainable water service for residents and businesses at a more predictable water rate.
With the end of its current water supply agreement drawing near, Homewood, IL initiated a new agreement with the City of Chicago Heights, which purchases Lake Michigan water from nearby Hammond, IN. Using a progressive design-build approach, The Village partnered with Burns & McDonnell to design and construct 2.5 miles of 30-inch transmission main and an 11 million-gallon-per-day booster pump station.
Throughout the design-build process, the team collaborated and created value engineering ideas that reduced the project’s overall cost by over a million dollars. The project team identified critical construction permits early in the project and had construction staff meet with state agencies to receive final permits before construction began. With this process the team reduced four months from the project schedule and allowed for an on-time delivery of the new water source to the village.
Additionally, the team was able to identify critical procurement needs early in the process to address supply chain and inflationary issues seen during the pandemic. By creating a plan to receive the 2.5 miles of pipe for the project early, the village avoided $600,000 of additional costs. This was the largest public works project in The Village of Homewood’s history and came at no additional costs to the residents and businesses. The village started building up its water fund reserve in 2005 to avoid borrowing additional funding through the issuance of bonds. The project began in 2019, with construction starting in early 2021. Homewood completed the transition to the new supplier on time and within budget in September.
Burns & McDonnell is a family of companies bringing together an unmatched team of 10,000 engineers, construction and craft professionals, architects, and more to design and build critical infrastructure. Learn more at burnsmcd.com.

RemsealLLCOpensinOmahatoOfferContrete JoinSealing,ParkingLotMaintenance
Women-owned Remseal LLC is a new concrete joint sealing and parking lot maintenance business in Omaha, opened this year by Kimberly Remmereid, who also owns Contour Construction. Remseal LLC is an opportunity for Kimberly and her group of professionals to continue to contribute more of their exceptional work to the construction industry.
Sealing joints in your concrete structures is key to prolonging the life of a concrete structure. Joints in slabs are critical for relieving stress to prevent cracking. Joints in containment structures are the main route liquids take to get to the ground. Not sealing these joints could lead to reportable leaks or even undermining of the structure if not addressed immediately.
Parking lot maintenance can extend pavement’s lifespan and help avoid potholes and cracks from forming. Maintenance can include cleaning, crack filling, striping, sealing, and asphalt overlay. Preventative maintenance can reduce spending, as resealing costs are significantly lower than resurfacing costs on average.

Texas de Brazil Steakhouse Sets October 10 Opening Date
Texas de Brazil has announced its Omaha location will open October 10 at 1110 Capitol Ave. in the downtown Capitol District. Texas de Brazil is a churrascaria, or Brazilian steakhouse, that features several cuts of flame-grilled beef, lamb, pork, chicken and Brazilian sausage as well as an extravagant salad area with a wide array of seasonal chef-crafted items. The Dallas-based restaurant chain has more than 50 locations worldwide.
Texas de Brazil began with a dream in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Enjoying the rancher’s life and feasting in the rodizio style native to the region, one partner had visions of bringing churrasco culture north to the United States. He wanted to share this unique way of dining where guests indulge in a parade of meats and extravagant seasonal salad area.
The experience at Texas de Brazil is unique. They slow-roast meats over open flames and present an impressive display of seasonal greens, vegetable dishes, and regional delicacies. The succulent meats are brought to each group’s table and carved in a show of skill and festive offering. Each table is given a card with a red and green side. Turn your card to green when you’re ready to eat, and turn your card to red to take a break.
For more information about the menu, reserving a table, or ordering to-go meals, go to texasdebrazil.com or call (402) 783-8777.

Nebraska Community Foundation Releases 2022 Youth Survey Results
Nebraska Community Foundation (NCF), in partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Center for Public Affairs Research (CPAR), surveyed 715 middle and high school students between January and May for the 2022 Nebraska Youth Survey.
Building on a trend from previous surveys, respondents expressed a strong preference for small communities. Safety, good schools, and proximity to family continue to be the top characteristics of their ideal community, and the vast majority (71%) said there is no stigma associated with returning to your hometown as an adult.
Though Nebraska youth seem to not see social downsides to returning home, results suggest they are susceptible to misperceptions about a lack of career or professional upsides to living in Greater Nebraska.
Healthcare (22%), agriculture (14%) and education (8%) represented the top three most desirable industries among respondents, but there seems to be a disconnect between what they want to do and what they perceive to be available where they live. Of student respondents, 48% said if they were to not live in their community as an adult the main reason would be job or business opportunities elsewhere.
The results of the Youth Survey begin to reveal the priorities, values, concerns, and desires of these individuals as well as factors that may influence their decision to return to or remain in Greater Nebraska in the future. The hope is that this data may serve as a resource for NCF’s network of 1,500 community volunteers as well as other organizations and entities that share an interest in people attraction.
For more information on Nebraska Community Foundation’s 2022 Nebraska Youth Survey, visit www.NebraskaHometown.org. To learn more about the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Center for Public Affairs Research and access many data resources, go to www.cpar.unomaha.edu.

JasonJason Nitz B ROOKESTONE M EADOWS
Meet Jason Nitz, the administrator at Brookestone Meadows. tell us a little about your business. - Brookestone Meadows is a not-for-profit skilled nursing facility that offers both long-term care and short-term rehab located in Elkhorn, NE.
How did you get started in the business? - I grew up in it! My mother was a CNA and would bring me into facilities that she worked in to do activities with residents and volunteer. Those experiences during my childhood fostered a love and passion for working with older adults.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?COVID…The impact this pandemic has had on our residents, team members, and families has been such a challenge to overcome in this industry. I don’t think I would be far off saying that it was especially challenging for those that are in the skilled nursing industry. We are fortunate to have a fantastic support system coming from our Vetter Home Office team and so many great people across all our Vetter facilities that are always willing to help to support one another.
tell us a little about your family. - I have been “going steady” with my spouse for nearly half of my life. We have two Tibetan Mastiffs (Shamus and Gwendolyn), an orange short haired tabby cat (Winston), and we are expecting our first human child in January. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - When I was transitioning out of the Navy, I remember asking myself what it was that I was going to do going forward? Would I continue being a jet mechanic in the civilian world? When I reflected on what jobs made me the happiest, I always came back to working with older adults.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I am an avid gardener in the summer and fall. I enjoy woodworking projects, classic trucks, and restoring/modifying antiques. I have also been known to binge watch a show or two with my wife.
Who inspires you? - The people I work with every day. Having gone through so much with COVID, watching them persevere, and continue to strive to provide the best quality care for our residents regardless the situation. Passion begets passion, and they keep me passionate and inspired everyday with what they accomplish as they continue to pursue excellence.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Take care of your people, and your people will take care of you.” A supervisor shared this with me when I put on rank for the first time in the Navy and those words ring truer every year.
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Kind. It cannot be understated how important it is to always start from a point of kindness in all our interactions. If I can throw in a dash of humor and make someone smile, then even better!
If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Betty White! She was an incredible actress, philanthropist, and activist who was a perfect example of someone who could shed a stereotype.
If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - (402) 289-2696; brookestonemeadows.com.

Andrea Bleicher PRG OF B ERKSHIRE H ATHAWAY H OME S ERVICES
Meet Andrea Bleicher, REALTOR® with Professional Realty Group (PRG) of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices.
tell us a little about your business. - PRG was created by my husband Ben Bleicher and myself in Lincoln in 2018. This year, we joined Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices (BHHS) and expanded into the Omaha market. What sets our team apart in the real estate world is that we wholeheartedly assume the duty of a fiduciary for our clients—we’re not just a salesperson. We’re relentless in our efforts to get them the best possible deal, keeping in mind that a real estate purchase is usually one of the most expensive investments a person makes. Therefore, the process requires experience-backed guidance, support, and care. By partnering with BHHS, our team has access to a broader network of resources and agents from multiple brokerages and diverse backgrounds so we can better assist our clients with buying and selling residential, commercial, new construction, leasing, and investments.
tell us a little about your family. - Ben and I have been married for five years. Our family consists of Ben’s son Vincent (19) and daughter Brynnlee (9), as well as a spoiled little dog named Lola and a cat named Henry who we all call Hunky and are completely obsessed with.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - A realtor having a full day off rarely happens, but when I do get some down time I always want to spend it with those I love. Ben and I are lucky enough to have a lot of family that lives in Omaha and Lincoln, and we really appreciate the time that we get to spend with them. In the summer (my favorite time of year), I am always excited that I get extra time with my bonus daughter, Brynnlee. We spend most of it visiting with family or at the pool at Firethorn in Lincoln with our friends.
What is your favorite hobby? - Definitely cooking. I am by no means a gourmet chef, but it is something that I really enjoy. For me, making good food is a great way to show my family how much I love them. Plus I find the process of cooking very zen.
What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I am on the party planning committee for the Josh the Otter organization. Their mission is to educate children and adults worldwide about water safety through the utilization of drowning prevention campaigns and early childhood water safety training.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? don’t think that I can narrow it down to one book as I absolutely love to read and usually read about 20 books a year. However, my favorite author is Karin Slaughter as I love to read a good thriller. I also enjoy a good nonfiction book that can help me improve as a person or give me a new perspective. The two books that really changed my life are The Gifts of Imperfection Brown and The Seven Decisions: Understanding the Keys to Personal Success by Andy Andrews. Both of these books really changed my perspectives on life. I reread them both every couple of years and always get something new out of them.

Tony
Tony Tran Jr. DEGUNS
Meet Tony Tran Jr., sales associate at DEGUNS. tell us a little about your business.Discount Enterprises, or DEGUNS, is the largest vendor in the Midwest of several well-known firearms brands, accessories, ammunition, and a whole lot more. Words simply cannot do justice in describing the selection we have available on hand and on order. As a Class 3 NFA Dealer, we aim to provide our customers with the best tools for shooting sports, hunting, or whatever your firearm needs may be. We also have a hundred yard outdoor range, a laser engraver/ custom designer, and offer knife-sharpening services. Our spacious location, located in northeast Lincoln just 38 minutes from Omaha, gives us the opportunity to offer our customers thousands of new products, apparel, training classes, chp classes, and the helpful knowledge to further their firearm experience.
How did you get started in the business? - I was a wee lad looking for a new job after I parted ways from working for my father in his business. DEGUNS put out a hiring advertisement, which I quickly took the opportunity to apply for, given I was a young and inexperienced firearms enthusiast wanting to learn more. It was after I was hired that I realized I probably turned this “hobby” into more of a passion.
tell us a little about your family. - I have four siblings, two younger brothers who are twins, and two older sisters in their mid-20s. I currently live with my father, one twin brother, my stepmom and her son, and our two doggies, Winston and Jersey. Our family consists of Vietnamese and Filipino origins, although 90% of us were born right here in the U.S.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?Leaving my sandwich making job after high school and going to work for my father in his business building sheds. Although I left that career, I learned quite a bit about construction/carpentry industry. I also got to spend a lot of time with my father, having him teach me the things he is passionate about and skilled at.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Get a haircut. A haircut really boosts my own confidence and appears more professional to me. As a sales associate, I take any chance I can to maintain a professional image and demeanor.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “If it seats, it yeets.” or “If you ain’t first, you’re last!”
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Fast.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Teleportation. Which talent would you most like to have? - Having a fantastic memory.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Auto/diesel mechanic work. Growing up, I knew my dad was into auto work and was fairly active in the car/ truck scene. I never caught on back then, but today, I recognize the importance of having some auto knowledge to maintain a vehicle that gets you places you need. Especially since I drive an older truck that can get weird once in a while.
What is your favorite tV show? - Peaky Blinders.
What is your favorite local restaurant? - I live in Lincoln but La Poblanita in Omaha is worth the drive!

Wil Wil Stoltenberg
T RUE N ORTH T ECHNOLOGIES
Meet Wil Stoltenberg, sales associate at True North Technologies.
tell us a little about your business. - True North Technologies is a full-suite digital marketing agency specializing in Mobile App and Website development and SEO. Our wheelhouse is helping businesses scale to exceed their goals by pushing them over the edge to reach those qualified, organic customers. All while thriving on transparency, accountability, and candor.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?Understanding our services like the back of my hand. What we provide comes with many moving pieces that act as one cohesive unit. Many questions regarding small details have stumped me. In which I could’ve (and should’ve) taken more time to study prior. In a way, I enjoy being asked questions I cannot answer. That question now becomes a learning opportunity.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Nothing of tangible value; but learning to listen and prepare properly. At the beginning of my career, I found myself always scrambling to find a response to clients as they were speaking. However, I’m amazed at the answers that will naturally come to me after listening and being appropriately prepared.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?Gaining confidence in myself after hearing my first “yes” at True North. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Wake up at 7 a.m., tee off at 7:30 a.m., and play 18 holes, all to be finished in time for Scott Hanson’s RedZone introduction and seven hours of commercial-free football.
Who inspires you? - Two answers: My dad and the people I surround myself with. Every year, I appreciate more what my dad has done for me, my family, and the ones he cares about most. He has guided me professionally and personally in ways that none have. I like to surround myself with individuals I can learn from and who motivate me to improve. I always want to have goals in mind, and these people remind and inspire me to exceed my goals.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - From the late Kobe Bryant, “Real sharpness comes with no effort.” I believe the two underlying themes here are confidence and preparation. This quote has changed the way I approach nearly everything I do in my daily life, especially working with clients.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? - Nothing in particular. However, being bit by a radioactive spider and seeing what comes of it wouldn’t be too shabby.
Which talent would you most like to have? - I’d absolutely love the ability to throw a football 65 yards downfield or run a 4.3-second 40-yard dash.
What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - My mom was a TeamMates Mentor for as long as I can remember. The amount of joy her multiple mentees brought her was unmatched. That is an organization I undoubtedly see myself in soon.
What is your favorite movie? - Django Unchained or Good Will Hunting. What is your favorite tV show? - Game of Thrones and (I’m assuming) soon-to-be House of the Dragon
If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Kobe Bryant.

Celebrate National Guide Dog Month with Outlook enrichment
Outlook Enrichment wants to highlight the importance of guide dogs and how they improve the lives of those who are blind or visually impaired. Did you know there are an estimated 10,000 dog guides in service at any time in the United States? Of the 8.1 million blind and visually impaired across the nation who are actively working, only 2% of individuals use dog guides.
Under Title I of the ADA, a service animal is considered a reasonable accommodation. The function of a guide dog is to provide access to the environment by guiding a handler and completing essential tasks along the path of travel. The guide dog provides environmental feedback based on behaviors that indicate to the handler that there is an obstacle, such as an elevator, stairs, or construction. The dog also provides a level of safety to the blind pedestrian. All guide dogs undergo extensive traffic training so they know how to react to an oncoming car.
Guide dog etiquette is essential in allowing the dog to focus on its role and completing tasks. Please don’t touch, talk, feed, pet, or distract the dog while wearing its harness. Always speak to the handler, not the dog, and always ask if you can pet the service animal.
Outlook Enrichment can connect individuals to the many dog guide schools and can assist employers, and community businesses develop policies that accommodate and welcome this unique population. For more information, visit outlooken.org.

Under the Matching Charitable Program, MCF will provide matching funds for NEW contributions made to existing and newly created Affiliated General, Designated, Donor Advised, Field of Interest, and Scholarship Funds. Matching donations will be made on a dollar-for-dollar basis up to a limit of $5,000 per individual donor, and subject to a maximum of $100,000 of matching dollars being available in the aggregate for all MCF Funds. If more than $100,000 is contributed on an aggregate basis to all MCF Funds, the matching dollars will be pro-rated among such donors based on the total contributions made. Matching dollars are for donations only. Charitable fund event sponsorships and/or event tickets are not eligible for matching dollars.
Last year, 1,308 donors raised more than $1.3 million, with $580,068 qualifying for matching funds, to support the missions of 91 charitable funds established at MCF.
The mission of Midlands Community Foundation is to be a catalyst for lasting impact in Sarpy and Cass counties and to give opportunities to organizations and individuals so that they can pursue their charitable goals. Learn more at midlandscommunity.org.

American Cancer Society engages Community Leaders with Real Men Wear Pink Campaign
Throughout the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the American Cancer Society of Omaha is engaging community leaders to help eliminate breast cancer with the Real Men Wear Pink campaign. The American Cancer Society is leading the breast cancer fight in the 21st century, and their commitment to creating a future free from breast cancer runs deep – but they cannot do it alone. The Real Men Wear Pink Omaha campaign is lead by over 20 men across Omaha.
Campaign ambassadors across Omaha are stepping up and using the power of wearing pink to raise funds and draw attention to the breast cancer fight. In fact, every dollar raised helps the American Cancer Society save more lives from breast cancer through early detection and prevention, breakthrough breast cancer discovery and research, and lifesaving patient support.
The success of the Real Men Wear Pink program depends on the creativity and commitment of past and current ambassadors. As a Real Men Wear Pink ambassador, leaders commit to wearing pink throughout October; raising awareness for the cause through their personal, professional, and social media networks; and raising a minimum of $2,500 to help the American Cancer Society fight breast cancer.
The American Cancer Society is a nationwide voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer. For more information or to make a donation toward the campaign, go to cancer.org.
Lutheran Family Services Launches New Website with updated Branding
Lutheran Family Services (LFS) launched their newly designed website on September 16. The website models after the organizations recent rebrand, featuring the purple and orange of their new logo.
“Our logo includes imagery of a Christian fish and interwoven paths crossing to form a blanket of community support,” said Chris Tonniges, president and CEO of LFS. “The purple represents every individual’s innate human value, and the orange signifies us serving as lights in our communities.”
The website was not only updated aesthetically, but user navigation was made easier with clear sections for different needs. The main page of the website contains many different resources and information for new and existing clients.
Established in 1892, Lutheran Family Services is a faith-based, notfor-profit, multi-service human care agency. The LFS mission is to provide human care services that build and strengthen individual, family and community life. Red Cross urges everyone to Prepare for emergencies
People everywhere are feeling the impacts of climate change with more frequent and intense weather events threatening our communities and the American Red Cross Serving Nebraska urges everyone to get ready for these emergencies now.
Just last year, more than 40% of Americans were living in a county struck by a climate-related disaster, according to analysis from the Washington Post. Disasters can happen anywhere, anytime. You can be ready by visiting redcross.org/prepare.
Three simple steps can help to keep your family safe during disasters:
1) Get a Kit—Build your emergency kit with a gallon of water per person, per day, non-perishable food, a flashlight, and a batterypowered radio. Don’t forget to add copies of important papers, cell phone chargers, blankets, and emergency contact information.
2) Make a Plan—Make a plan for what to do in case you are separated from your family during an emergency, and what to do if you have to evacuate.
3) Be Informed—Stay informed by finding out what emergency situations may occur where you live, work, and go to school, how local officials will contact you during a disaster, and how you will get important information, such as evacuation orders.
The mission of the American Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. For more information, visit redcross.org or call 1-(800) RED-CROSS.
Project Harmony Promotes Fire Safety with Youth Fire Intervention Program
October is Fire Prevention Month, and Project Harmony wants to raise awareness with the Youth Fire Intervention program. The co-location of the Omaha Fire Department’s Youth Fire Intervention program and Michael Davenport, fire apparatus engineer (FAE), at Project Harmony is another critical link to keeping children and families safe. Michael Davenport was awarded the 2022 Kids First Award for his work with Project Harmony.
Nationally, children of all ages set on average 100,000 fires each year resulting in over $300 million in property damage and about 300 deaths. Without intervention, there is an 81% chance that fire play will be repeated. Often there is more happening in a child’s life than just curiosity and playing with fire – such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, physical abuse, bullying, and peer pressure - it could be an outcry for help. Through this partnership, Project Harmony can provide intervention, education and resources for the entire family. The education program is open to kids ages eight to 18.
Project Harmony exists to provide effective, immediate and sensitive support to child abuse victims and their non-offending family members. Project Harmony grew out of the vision of several Omaha community professionals and advocates to create a better system of protection for abused and neglected children. Personal Banking Like You Remember
For 25 years, Lincoln Federal Savings Bank has been sharing the “Lincoln Federal difference” with the Omaha area through personalized service and a commitment to the community. Founded in 1906 as a mutual holding company in Lincoln, and still operating as one today, Lincoln Federal is owned by the depositors of the Bank and does not have any outside shareholders. This structure allows the Bank to offer highly competitive rates to customers on both loans and deposits, as profits are not distributed to shareholders.
Today, Lincoln Federal has grown to over $350 million in assets primarily focusing on originating single-family mortgage loans and acquiring certificates of deposit. With just over 100 employees, Lincoln Federal continues to deliver the quality banking products and services that have become its motto of “Personal Banking Like You Remember.”
Community
Lincoln Federal is deeply involved in the Omaha community and is a part of organizations including the MS Association, Omaha Chamber of Commerce, Realtors Association, Omaha Municipal Land Bank, and Business Networking International (BNI). They also participate in Lincoln Federal’s Lending Hands program, a program that is designed to encourage employees to do good in their communities and get involved with programs like Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, Nebraska Blood Banks, and so much more. Here are a few more ways the Bank exemplifies their commitment to give back to the communities they serve:
Annual Make-A-Wish® Golf Tournament
Lincoln Federal Savings Bank celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2006 and formed a Centennial Committee with a goal of giving back to the Lincoln community through volunteering and charitable donations. They wanted to organize a benefit golf tournament and The Make-AWish® Foundation of Nebraska was a great fit. What started off as a benefit tournament for their centennial year celebration has evolved into a very successful annual partnership that makes dreams come true for children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions.
LincolnFED Kids Program
In 2005, the employees at Lincoln Federal came together to create the LincolnFED Kids program to raise money to provide these in-need students and their families with baskets of food over the Christmas holiday break. The Bank and its employees promote this program throughout the year with many different fundraising opportunities.
Casual for a Cause
Each Friday throughout the year, Lincoln Federal employees are encouraged to dress Casual for a Cause. This means that the employees can dress down for a fee. At the end of the year, each location chooses a local charity to benefit with the funds raised.

Moving can be tough. Selling your home can be even tougher. Before pitching that ‘For Sale’ sign, you may be thinking about making some improvements to your home to catch the eye of buyers everywhere. A few changes can make a huge difference in your homes performance on the market. There are many businesses in Omaha that are ready to take your home to the next level, before you enter the next chapter of your life.
Inspect Your Home b efore You Wreck Your Home
Before thinking about the aesthetic changes you could make to your home, make sure to check the basics first. Most people consider a home inspection something that a potential buyer should do, but why not get those fixes out of the way before the home even goes on the market?
Getting an inspection might seem like a pricy thing to do for a home you won’t be living in, but think of it as an investment. Catching things that require fixing before your house goes on the market can help keep your asking price high, and leaves less room for complaints from potential buyers. Light remodeling of kitchens and baths go a long way in making your home more appealing. Increased energy efficiency lowers utility bills, which is very attractive to potential buyers.
The home inspection also allows you to formulate a game plan on when to replace large items such as HVAC systems or shingles, and the requisite funds necessary to accomplish that.
It’s What’s On the Inside t hat Matters
New paint, new tile, maybe a new appliance in the kitchen...these are all things that come to mind when thinking about remodeling your home before reselling. Sometimes, the things you can’t see are the ones that will really seal the deal for the buyer, and pad your pockets as a seller. Take a look at the system that that lies on the other side of your floors, ceilings, and walls: the HVAC system. One appraisal estimate in Pocket Sense says that installing a new central air-conditioning system will increase your property value by 10%.

Ideal Heating & Air Conditioning
“If your home remodel includes any additions or reconfigurations of existing rooms, or any other modification that changes the square footage of your home, you’ll also want to consider how this will affect your HVAC system,” advised Owner c orwin Keller . “A system that is too large for your square footage is going to cycle on and off more often, which will ultimately cause wear and tear more quickly. On the flipside, a system that is too small for your home is going to struggle to maintain a comfortable temperature, which not only causes discomfort within your own home, but your system will constantly be running to try to reach the desired temperature. If you think you may be running into this problem during your remodel – or if you aren’t planning on changing the square footage of your home but think you may still have this issue – I encourage you to reach out to our team so that we can provide you with an accurate calculation and determine the next step.”

light for less power. It’s also popular for homeowners to implement USB access throughout their house. With smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and everything else that requires a USB to charge, it’s convenient to have USB outlets available for easy access.”
Not interested in upgrading to USB outlets? No problem – but at least make sure your outlets are updated. If your plug isn’t snug and secure when you put it in an outlet, you will definitely want to replace it; this can cause electrical arcing, or an electrical breakdown of gas that produces a prolonged electrical charge. This puts your home in serious danger of catching on fire. Other signs that your outlets need updating include: sparks, smoke, or a burning smell appearing when you plug something in; an outlet that feels hot when you touch it; the outlet cover is cracked; or if the outlet is ungrounded, meaning it only has two holes instead of three (this is more common in older homes). They may physically be a small aspect of your home, but they play a big part in how it functions, so be sure your outlets are upgraded and up-to-date!
Shine a light on the out-of-sight details that might need updating in your home before getting ready to sell. Putting in the work earlier in the process will yield a better result at the end of your remodeling journey.
So Much Space
Imagine finding the perfect home online, contacting the agent, setting up a tour, and finally seeing your dream house in person just to see that there is absolutely zero storage space. That can be a major deal breaker, right? According to Trulia, kitchens and master bathrooms are two areas of the home that add the most value to a home, which means the storage space in those rooms has to be top-notch. Make sure every room in your home has the ideal storage for every potential buyer with ShelfGenie of Omaha .
ShelfGenie retrofits existing and new cabinets with custom-built pullout shelves. These enable people to increase the usable, reachable space in their cabinets by up to 50%. The shelves also keep people from having to get down on the floor on their hands and knees to reach something in the cabinets.
In addition to the custom pullouts, ShelfGenie’s other niche area is closets. Their custom closets are designed to the client’s needs, including the use of drawers, shelves, and the height of closet rods that work for their clothing. ShelfGenie also does a no-cost, no obligation visit with the client to design a solution that is customized to their needs. Plus, their products have a lifetime warranty, so it is a one-time purchase.
Some of ShelfGenie’s clients also add lighting to the sides of their closets or other spaces to offer additional illumination. This especially helps when the closet or cabinet has little light, and provides assistance to people with limited eyesight. If you think ShelfGenie’s services can be beneficial to you, reach out to them today to get in touch with a designer.
“My advice is to listen to the designer, since they are the experts,” Jay Durmaskin , owner of ShelfGenie of Omaha offered. “It doesn’t mean their ideas are always better than yours, but at least be open to their suggestions. Also, read the reviews of the company you want to hire to make sure people are happy with the results.”
Not Just an empty room
Need An Electrician?
Staging your home can make a huge difference on the outcome of your sale. It is easier for potential buyers to see themselves living in the home when they see furniture and décor beautifully set in every room. There are many places that can assist you with the staging of your home, whether it be finding new furniture or working with what you have. If you don’t need any new furniture, there are options to rent furniture specifically for staging.
A big piece of advice to those getting started on updating their homes aesthetics before selling is to appeal to the masses. Make informed design choices based on what the most people will like, whether it is neutral wall colors or sleek décor. The room should almost look like a customizable base setting for the buyer to get inspiration from.
ready to Sell
So you’ve put in the work, now what? Making your home the star of the market is a task not many can do alone, but luckily, there are experienced realtors to help you.
Sellers likely have more equity in their homes than they can imagine. Inflation has been mostly driven by a lack of inventory plus heaps of buyers hoping to take advantage of the great interest rates. Many sellers not only get over-asking offers but unbelievable terms to boot. With the help of Professional realty Group (PrG) of berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, they can ensure you get the absolute most profit possible, easiest terms, and a seamless transaction that will leave you smiling all the way to the bank!

It is important to remember that remodeling your house before selling means making design changes that will appeal to the masses. The designers at ShelfGenie have the experience to provide knowledge on what will be attractive to the most amount of people. It’s the little things that people fall in love with!

FotoFunSpot provides premium attended and unattended photo booth services that can create fun, unique, and memorable experiences. From elegant mirror booths to 360 video booths to self-service stations, FotoFunSpot can provide great entertainment for any holiday event.
“Since photo booths are intentionally informal, people have freedom to be creative and have fun,” said Owner Mitch Miller. “The result is people getting to know each other better through casual, relaxed interactions where they are free to be themselves.”
Experiential photography comes in many forms and can be much more than a photo booth on its own. Integrating a photo booth into a group activity adds a new spin on an otherwise familiar game. For example, consider having a scavenger hunt and using the photo booth as a way to document the “finds” from each participating team.
Photos with Santa are a classic favorite. This year, FotoFunSpot has partnered with a Santa and some local event designers to offer the complete Santa photo experience that leaves no work left for you. The moments between Santa and a child sharing their Christmas list are precious memories that become family keepsakes for years. Don’t wait too long to book for this holiday season though, warns Mitch.
“The time to book your holiday party is now! We already have some dates sold out in December,” said Mitch. “As the holidays approach, everyone’s schedule gets busier and busier, and it’s important to get those items that can be booked ahead of time so you have less to worry about as your event date approaches.”
The most important aspect of the holidays is spending time with the people you love. Capturing these memories through photos freezes the moment in time, so you and your loved ones can reminisce for years to come.
“After the cookies have been eaten, the eggnog is gone, and the party’s over, the one thing that will remain are the printed and digital photos that people take with them,” Mitch shared. “We’ve been told many times over about families that have photos from past years and how they keep the photos on the fridge or in an album. People truly love the photos, and the memories associated with them.”
Feeling the holiday spirit? There’s no shame in getting your holiday plans ready early. Play “Deck the Halls” before Thanksgiving and get in touch with these local businesses to help you prepare for a sparkling holiday season!

True Happiness begins within you, and ends with enlightenment
It seems impossible to go on the internet these days without seeing the “new” popular self-care trend everyone is trying. The truth is it doesn’t have to be so hard. Many of these new trends stem from basic practices in holistic health. Find the process that works for you and everything else will fall into place. Whether it is physical, mental, spiritual, or emotional health, there are local businesses ready to help you on your journey to complete health.
c onnecting the b ody and Mind
There are millions of ways to improve your health, and sometimes the most unconventional route is the best way to go. With the help of their many experienced experts, Omaha Awakening c enter will help you find the wellness method that works for you.
Omaha Awakening Center provides an array of services to get your body and mind feeling their best. They offer intuitive massage therapy which utilizes hands on therapeutic massage techniques to restore or balance the flow of energy within the body. They also offer multiple reiki services including ascension reiki and holy fire reiki.
“Reiki is a Japanese form of alternative medicine,” said chris Ansell, founder of the Omaha Awakening Center. “Our Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing. The use of touch helps the therapist channel energy and activates the natural healing processes of the patient’s body, and restores physical and emotional well-being. The different versions of reiki, including ascension and fire, refer to the type of energy the therapist is channeling.”
One must give this a try and help find peace in a time, where we can all use some relaxation and continue to attempt to socialize openly with one another.”
Each staff member at Omaha Awakening Center has their own skillset whether it is massage therapy, energy work, life coaching, or Access Conscious Bars. Access Conscious Bars is a gentle process, placing the hands on 32 points on the head. The bars points are where all the thoughts, ideas, beliefs, considerations, emotions and attitudes are stored. The center also sells handmade therapy artwork and hugs, which are rice bags that can be heated up and applied to areas of pain.

Something in the Water
When people think about living a healthy lifestyle, they often think about their diet, sleep schedule, and how much water they’re drinking. What if the actual problem is what is IN the water you’re drinking?
Aqua Systems will fix your household water problems with our one-of-a-kind line of water softeners and reverse osmosis systems. Aqua Systems is a family-owned, full-service water treatment company, in business for nearly 60 years. They treat city and well water for residential and commercial applications, including water softeners, reverse osmosis, and commercial, bottleless drinking systems. Their water systems help you forego adding to the alarming environmental impact of bottled water, which is both wasteful and bad for the environment because plastic bottles take more than 1,000 years to bio-degrade and, if incinerated, produce toxic fumes. What’s more, there are more standards regulating tap water in the U.S. than bottled water, so the quality can be questionable.
Untreated water in any home can be hard on pipes, appliances, and you. By drinking un-purified water, you may be putting contaminants in your body you just don’t want. Local City water usually contains higher- than-normal levels of calcium and magnesium, (hardness), which will cause problems around the house.
With improved water quality, the benefits are endless. They include healthier skin and hair, softer laundry, extended appliance lifespan, better tasting drinking water, spotless dishes, and less use of detergents and soaps.
“Our mission is to improve the quality of drinking water using a variety of methods. In addition to having a variety of filtration systems available, we at Aqua Systems want to help our clients spend their precious leisure time on leisure,” Jeff White of Aqua Systems said.
It may seem like a small thing, but taking care of your water can be a huge step towards a better, healthier you.
Don’t Forget Your Mind
Even if you don’t feel like you are struggling day to day, therapy is a great way to keep yourself in check and process any emotions that you may have shut away. Sometimes it takes someone else looking into your mind and what is going on in your life to help you realize that there are things you can work on to improve the quality of your life.
Poor mental health can affect so much more than your mood. It can affect your focus, productivity, energy, and overall motivation.
If simple days feel hard, there might be an underlying issue that is causing these symptoms that you are unaware of. In the same way that you have a yearly physical checkup, you should have a mental health checkup. Even just daily check-ins with yourself can help you deeper understand your emotions, what may be stressing you out, and other factors that are affecting your wellbeing.
Something that affects an estimated 10 million Americans is seasonal affective disorder (SAD), according to Boston University. SAD is a type of depression related to changes in the seasons. It is easier to spot in the fall and winter months because the symptoms are very similar to regular depression.
People with seasonal affective disorder experience the opposite symptoms in the warmer months of the year, usually sleeping less and sometimes exhibits manic behavior. If you feel that SAD is affecting you this fall, try light therapy. The recommended method is to sit in front of a light source with 10,000 lux for 30 minutes every morning. Other treatments for SAD could be medication or talk therapy.
Meeting with a therapist or other mental health professional isn’t as scary as it seems. Sometimes, the process of finding the right person to work with you can have a lot of trial and error, but luckily, there are a lot of local resources to choose from. Just google “mental health resources near me” and from there, you will be able to see everything your area has to offer.
Making the effort to better your mind and body is the hardest step. Finding what works for you can be an exciting adventure. Let these local experts take you along for the ride! When you find something that works for you and makes you feel good, you’ll never go back.

Some may describe insurance as a “necessary evil”. It’s that “thing” we are required to carry, whether it’s the State forcing us to insure our vehicles or the mortgage company requiring us to insure our homes. State Farm Agent tanya Patzner understands this.
“At the end of the day, what my team sells is a claim—a promise to be there when something happens,” said Tanya.
Tanya grew up in small-town Iowa. She went to work for State Farm right out of college and spent 15 years in various positions within claims before deciding to become an agent in 2009. Her entire family works for State Farm—Tanya’s dad is still the State Farm Agent in her hometown, and her littlest sister works in his office. Her other sister is a claim representative here in Omaha.
“If you cut us, we bleed State Farm red!” said Tanya.
The nearly 30 years Tanya has spent with State Farm, not to mention growing up as an AK (agent’s kid), gives her a unique perspective. She knows the company, knows the products, and knows the people. Tanya is dedicated to ensuring there are no bad surprises.
“It’s important our customers understand what they have, and what they don’t,” said Tanya. “If a customer says, ‘Why didn’t I know—why didn’t you tell me?’, we have failed.”
Tanya’s entire team shares her passion for taking care of their customers. They exist to serve by making a difference in the lives of their customers every day.
