Years and Years of Strictly Business

It is crazy to think that this month marks 30 years for Strictly Business in Lincoln and over 15 here in Omaha! Where has the time gone? Having started in Lincoln before expanding into the Omaha market, we have great pride in our community and the impact we’ve made. What a ride it has been.

Looking back, it is so hard to believe that it has been 30 years since the very beginning of Strictly Business. We have embraced the changes that have come with time, as we now reach more readers than ever before with our eye-catching covers and strong internet presence. Our In the Issue email blast gains new subscribers all the time, as does our list of clients that take advantage of directly reaching readers with their news. What started out as a black and white news print is now a colorful magazine that accommodates approximately three times the number of local businesses. And we’re still growing! I can hardly believe it.

With constant change and growth, I am especially thankful for the great team that keeps Strictly Business running. Though it has been sad to part ways with old employees, we couldn’t be more proud of them for stepping into a new stage of their life – close to 10 past employees now run a successful business of their own! Entrepreneurship is something I highly value, so I take great pleasure in helping promote those who start local businesses.

We take great pride in promoting Omaha, making it our mission to be a source of information for the community. By making community members aware of the current news in Omaha, we not only rally

community support, but get to show our own support as well. One great thing about Omaha is that people are always consciously trying to support local businesses, something that hasn’t changed in our 15+ years of businesses in this community.

Watching small businesses grow and develop because of community support is one of my favorite aspects of Strictly Business. The success of local businesses is our top priority, so we can’t help but celebrate their success. Since the start of advertising with us, we have witnessed several small businesses thrive, with some even becoming large entities whose presence is known far beyond Omaha.

We wish the best for all local businesses, helping out in any way we can. We welcome new clients, regardless of if they are new or old businesses –it’s never too late to connect with the community. This issue, we are proud of the number of nonprofit organizations participating in our Supporting Nonprofits special feature story. We love to show our support and help rally community support by having a story built just for them! If you aren’t currently involved with nonprofits in the community, we have plenty of amazing ones around for you to choose from. We run our Supporting Nonprofits story every January and July, with nonprofits submitting press releases every month in between. There’s always something going on!

To our readers, thank you for helping us support local businesses for the last 15+ years. We hope you will continue to support local businesses, whether you find them through Strictly Business or elsewhere, and that you share with our clients that you saw their business right here at Strictly Business. It’s our pleasure to rally the Omaha community together to support local businesses.

Get to Know Burns & McDonnell!

Burns & McDonnell is a local, employee-owned company that strives for a work environment that promotes a good attitude and a higher level of care towards their work. At Burns & McDonnell, they’re unique in that every employee is an owner, not just a select group. Every employee is working together to make clients successful.

One of the things that makes Burns & McDonnell’s team amazing is their work ethic and willingness to step up to get a job done while having a sense of humor. Whether it is project work or items around the office, their team is willing to pitch in and get their hands dirty. The joke, “Be safe Mac & Burns,” stems from the COVID-19 pandemic during a cameo with David Hasselhoff in which he reversed Burns & Mac during his talk. Though many of the jokes around the office aren’t remembered at the end of the day, this one continues to be used. Overall, the office is somewhat of a Seinfeld episode; they do their work, they joke and have sidebars and at the end of the day, the atmosphere of the office makes them want to come back to work to see what the next Seinfeld episode will bring.

Their office has truly caring individuals who take pride in their work and helping others. They consider themselves stewards of our community, giving back however they can, including providing grant dollars for STEM programs and volunteering their time. The team at Burns & McDonnell knows that what they do makes a difference in the world. Their projects matter in everyday life, as they are the foundation for the roads we drive on and the water we drink. From scientists to construction professionals to engineers, their Omaha office serves a variety of clients like MidAmerican Energy, MUD and Nebraska Department of Transportation. Burns & McDonnell truly works collaboratively and has the resources in many areas of expertise to give clients what they need as efficiently as possible.

Energy Generation and Distribution by revenue are a top priority for the Omaha office of Burns & McDonnell. Currently, Burns & McDonnell is working with MidAmerican Energy and Omaha Public Power District on several projects. Their environmental team is one of their largest in employee-owners because the environmental team touches almost every single project in this day and age.

Although they are a smaller office, they have personnel from most all of the markets they serve nationally, making them one of the most diverse offices in the company. Diversity, when paired with efficient knowledge sharing, is invaluable when solving project challenges.

Burns & McDonnell recently expanded into a new space to the south of their original office. In doing so, they added workstations for 24 employee-owners as well as a wellness room, collaboration area and included the existing conference room and kitchen area. The expansion provided room for those who were hired during the pandemic to have space in the office, as well as provided additional workstations for future employees. They are committed to Omaha and to being a partner in the community that brings workforce development to our home and their new space supports that goal.

As a family of companies bringing together an unmatched team of engineers, construction and craft professionals, architects and more that care about client success, Burns & McDonnell is proud to be serving the Omaha community. To learn more, visit burnsmcd.com.

Pediatric Dental Specialists Encourages Parents to Schedule Kindergarten Dental Visit

Pediatric Dental Specialists (PDS) wants to remind parents to schedule their soon-to-be kindergarteners’ dental visits before school starts. Did you know Nebraska law requires students enrolled in public schools to have annual dental screenings? Healthy students are better learners, and prepping your child well for their first year in school by getting their dental health checked is important.

PDS has several locations with amazing teams to help serve you and your family best. They have offices in Grand Island, Hastings, North Platte, Omaha and Kearny. You can visit www. mypediatricdentalspecialists.com to take a virtual tour of the offices, meet the dentists and request an appointment.

Pediatric Dental Specialists is currently accepting new patients. Early dental care is essential in creating and maintaining ideal oral health in children. Equally important is the continuity of that care, which is why parents seek a dental office “home” where children can receive routine evaluations and cleanings, and any other treatments that keep their smiles healthy.

At Pediatric Dental Specialists, they strive to be a lifelong partner in dental care for families. They aim to create positive dental habits in children that will last a lifetime so they can grow up to have healthy teeth and healthy lives. For more information and each location’s contact information, go to www.mypediatricdentalspecialists.com.

DEZIREE

Meet Deziree Medina, associate attorney at McGill Law, P.C., L.L.O.

Tell us a little about your business. - McGill Law is the female focused firm that specializes in helping women through the divorce process, but this doesn’t mean we only represent women or only handle divorce matters. We practice in many areas of the law that affect the family including custody, guardianships, adoptions and estate planning.

We have a strong team of compassionate and hard-working attorneys and staff that are here to guide you through your legal needs. How did you get started in the business? - I actually thought I was going to be in the mental health field when I grew up. I went to school for psychology with every intention of going to graduate school. My junior year of undergrad I realized I wasn’t truly happy with that plan, and after discussions with multiple professors, I decided to go to law school and never looked back.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Doing just about anything with my German Shepherd, Lobo.

Who inspires you? - I’m inspired by confident, strong women who know what they want and are eager to earn what they deserve.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - To not let fear stop you from doing anything in life, just go for it! You only have one life and you should make the most of it.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Positive. This can be meant in so many ways – positive attitude, assured, confident. My grandma has told me my whole life that I got my name because I “was born in the desert” and I’m “a ray of sunshine.” It’s not true at all, but I’ve always tried to live my life with sunshine, even on the cloudy days.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? - There is no way I could pick just one song here. Instead, I’ll tell you a song I’ve been playing on repeat right now: “Photo ID” by Remi Wolf and Dominic Fike.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Teleportation. I could travel the world for free and wouldn’t have to waste time at airports! Never having to drive would also be a huge bonus.

Which talent would you most like to have? - To play an instrument (and be good at it). Music is so powerful, but I’m limited to just singing in the car.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - I’d love to be a sports journalist and/or broadcaster.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - My favorite books will forever be the Harry Potter series, but Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite of the series.

What is your favorite TV show? - Oh, this is a tough question. It depends on my mood that day. Some of my favorites are Friday Night Lights, Parks and Recreation, Grey’s Anatomy, Stranger Things and The Last of Us

JOE

Meet Joe Pitzl, president of Pitzl Contracting.

Tell us a little about your business. - Pitzl Contracting is a family run concrete company. Current services range from concrete removal, concrete repair, driveways, patios, garage floors, pool decks, sidewalks and pathways, concrete slabs and flat work, parking lots, stamped and stained concrete and steps for commercial and residential services. During the winter months, we offer snow removal services for properties around the Omaha area.

We care about building relationships and go out of our way to make sure that all employees and clients feel as though they are part of our family. We take great pride in doing a great job on a project because we properly trained our employees and took the time to do it right.

How did you get started in the business? - I have been working with concrete my whole adult life. My dad owned his own business and always pushed me to start my own. I worked for various companies throughout my career and gained valuable experience. Upon my dad’s passing, I decided the best way to honor his memory was to do what he always believed I could, and that’s how Pitzl Contracting was started in 2020.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The weather is our biggest barrier, the rain, wind and temperature impact each day’s ability to complete projects.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - How fast Pitzl Contracting has grown and the respect and acknowledgement I get from the community for the great work we do. I take great pride in teaching employees to do great work from start to finish.

Tell us a little about your family. - Family is the most important aspect of my life. We gather for meals, holidays, and events. It is also important that our employees feel like they are part of the Pitzl family.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Golfing or boating.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I’m a really nice guy. I can come across as stern, but I would give anyone the shirt off my back.

Who inspires you? - My dad and my grandpa.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - To join the 4:30 a.m. club. Getting up early lets you have more time in your day. I now wake up at 4:30 a.m. every day.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Giving.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? - “Omaha” by Counting Crows.

JEN

KINGERY CONSTRUCTION

Meet Jen Cowher, director of construction operations at Kingery Construction.

Tell us a little about your business. -

Kingery Construction is a general contractor. We are excited to be preparing to celebrate our 100th Anniversary in January 2024 and have enjoyed the wide variety of projects we have worked on in Nebraska.

How did you get started in the business? - My mom would take me to houses being built in my hometown when I was growing up. We would trespass (ha!) through the house and guess what each room was going to be. That started my interest in construction management and reading plans.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Being a woman in construction. Years ago, I found out that another woman and I were being paid much less than men in the same role. It was an eye-opening experience.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- Getting promoted to director. I’m very honored that I was picked for this role. My goal in my career was to become a project manager, so I wasn’t thinking beyond that role. I definitely enjoyed my project manager role on my projects, but I’m excited to learn this new position. Tell us a little about your family. - I have one daughter who is six years old.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

- The birth of my daughter. Life became more about why I’m working.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Cook. I don’t mean cooking for dinner - I don’t enjoy that, but I like cooking new/ extravagant recipes. I plan happy hour for my family and friends once a month. I have a new theme each month that all the food and drink is based around. It takes me three-four nights to prep. We have been doing this for the last five years and I haven’t had a repeat theme yet!

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I was a D1 athlete at the University of Nebraska.

Who inspires you? - My daughter. She tells me she wants to be a boss just like me when she grows up!

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Ask questions. Not just for myself to learn, but also some people don’t like to speak up unless asked. I always end meetings by directly asking every person in the meeting if they have a question or comment. I wished someone would have asked me if I had a question when I was younger. There were many times I had the answer but didn’t speak up.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - My superpower would be to read, write, speak and understand any language. What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - Cake decorating. I’m pretty awesome at icing roses!

Which talent would you most like to have? - Ski. I’m very coordinated except when skis are on my feet.

What local nonprofit organizations are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), Parish Council of Catholic Women (PCCW) and PEO. All three organizations are for women. I’m passionate about encouraging women in their career/life.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so?

LIZETT

Meet Lizett Nissenson, owner and president of Maven Tile & Stone, Inc.

Tell us a little about your business. - Maven Tile & Stone is a tile design studio that specializes in showcasing unique tiles and stones, as well as other commodity products. What really sets us apart is the design services we offer and the attention to detail we put into everything we do. We can help you select the best product for your specific application. Maven makes the process easier for you before you get to the installation phase. We answer technical questions and will even do walk-throughs on full-house projects during non-business hours. We are very hands-on. The samples in our showroom and design center are there for builders who come in with a set of plans or property owners who want to get ideas and advice for their new build or remodel. Maven has also done several commercial projects, including restaurants, yoga studios, med spas and hotels.

How did you get started in the business? - When I was 20 years old, I became a sales associate at a tile store in Long Beach, CA, where I was born and raised. It was a total fluke. I had a friend working at the shop and she convinced me it’d be fun. I ended up never leaving the industry! I worked at about five or six other tile stores before my 20+ years of experience and strong love for tile and stone led me to start my own business at the age of 36. I took a few big clients with me before I had even established my own studio. When I did open up a shop in Manhattan Beach, I was working by appointment-only for highend clients. Then about two years ago, my husband and I decided we wanted to leave California and find a good home where we could raise our daughter. I was also seeking a market that wasn’t overly saturated with other tile design studios. With the guidance from a few friends who are also both clients and fellow designers, we ended up in Lincoln! Now that I’m here, I’m excited to grow Maven Tile & Stone and bring some coastal-meets-farmhouse design vibes to Nebraska!

What has been your most important achievement professionally?Being featured in Woman Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the most influential women in my industry in 2021.

Tell us a little about your family. - My husband Hugo, who is my right hand at Maven, and I have two children, Lexi Bella (11) and Cameron (21).

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?Moving my family and business from California to Nebraska.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Once you become fearless, life becomes limitless.” – Nishant Patel.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Tile Maven. The word “maven” means expert or connoisseur.

MATT

Meet Matthew Paeth, executive director at Nebraska USA Wrestling. Tell us a little about your business. - We are a nonprofit organization that is the governing body for USA wrestling in the State of Nebraska. We work with athletes that range from ages five to 30, helping them develop and giving them the needed tools to achieve their goals and dreams within the sport of wrestling and life. Our athletes take great pride in representing the “Husker State” all over the country and world. How did you get started in the business? - I started my wrestling journey at the age of five and immediately fell in love with it. Through wrestling I have been able to travel to some very cool places and meet amazing people. Now being a dad myself, I can share this sport with my kids. Wrestling truly is like no other sport. You may be competitors on the mat one minute and the next you’re hanging out grabbing something to eat. We almost become like family. I feel very fortunate that I have turned my love of wrestling into a career that I get to share with my kids and help grow the wrestling landscape here in Nebraska.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - I am only seven months into my role as executive director, and we have already seen growth in our participation, I cannot wait to see where we are a year from now. The future of wrestling in the state of Nebraska is bright, and we are looking forward to making our mark nationally in the years to come.

Tell us a little about your family. - My wife’s name is Rebecca and we have a soon-to-be four-year-old and a two-year-old. My daughter, Larsen, who will be turning four, just started wrestling and is learning the fundamentals. She also loves traveling and being around “her team.” My son, Thorin, who is two, is a little wrestler in the making. He has no fear and his infectious little grin will brighten your day. My wife Rebecca is a registered nurse and is also working on her master’s and Doctorate in Nurse Practitioner through Purdue University. Rebecca is the one who keeps us all on track, and we’d be lost without her.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?Becoming a dad really changed my life for the better.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Spending time with the kids. We all love going to the Zoo or the trampoline park.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - That I have an Agricultural Engineering degree.

Who inspires you? - My kids. I do the absolute best I can to ensure this sport is around for them and their kids.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Being able to be in more than one place at a time.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Agriculture.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - Nebraska USA wrestling. Wrestling is the greatest sport on the planet, in my opinion anyways. But seriously, as an organization we aim to help as many kids as possible achieve their goals. Whether that is becoming a state champion or an Olympic champion, we are here to help develop and give guidance in order for them to chase their dreams.

What is your favorite local restaurant? - Ray’s wings & Pizza. They are a part of Bills Mafia, GO BILLS!

Strictly Business Welcomes Shae Withington as New Content Writer and Editor

Strictly Business is excited to welcome Shae Withington to the production team as the new content writer and editor. Shae will work with clients each month to create press releases, feature stories, client spotlights and other editorial pieces for both the Lincoln and Omaha editions of the magazine.

Shae is originally from Genoa, CO, where her family farms and ranches. Having earned scholarships to attend Nebraska Wesleyan University, Shae moved to Lincoln to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree of Arts in English with a minor in marketing. Rather than moving back home after graduation this past May, Shae decided to take advantage of the opportunities that are available in a city much larger than her home town. Though she worked various jobs throughout college, none of them were exactly what she wanted to do with her life. After searching for a job somewhere in the English field, Shae found Strictly Business and couldn’t be happier with the position. She enjoys getting to write and edit material for a magazine that also lets her interact with clients and utilize most of her skill set.

Please help Strictly Business welcome Shae WIthington! Shae can be reached at the office at (402) 466-3330 or by email at shae@ strictlybusinessomaha.com. To view monthly articles and stories on Omaha businesses and other local professionals, go online to strictlybusinessomaha.com.

Girls on the Run Gears Up for 20th Year of Programming

Girls on the Run of Nebraska (GOTR) will celebrate its 20th anniversary this fall with friendship and 5K fun at schools across Lincoln and Omaha. More than 24,000 girls across the state have participated in GOTR since its inception with 11 girls in Lincoln in 2003.

Girls on the Run combines exercise, education and mentoring to build confidence and character in thirdthrough-sixth grade girls. Teams meet twice weekly for two months to play running games that help train them for a 5K run/walk. Lessons on teamwork, decision-making and goal-setting are incorporated with physical activity, so participants get much more than exercise. The season highlight will be the Metro regional GOTR 5K on November 5 in Lincoln. Volunteer coaches are needed for sites across Omaha and Lincoln. You don’t have to be a runner to be a great GOTR coach. Coaching is a rewarding short-term opportunity and you’ll have just as much fun as the girls. Training is required.

Help your girl put her best foot forward with Girls on the Run this year. Visit www.GOTRNebraska.org to bring GOTR to your school or to get involved.

Project Harmony Hosts National Be Someone Day July 21

On Friday, July 21, National Be Someone Day, hosted by Project Harmony, challenges each of us to take 10 seconds to make a difference in the life of a child. What can be done in 10 seconds? We can order a cup of coffee or water a plant. We can hear or tell a bad joke. In 10 seconds, we can change our minds, and after doing so say a prayer of thanks. When we walk into a room, we can register the pain in someone’s eyes and begin to provide comfort. We can praise and honor someone who deserves it.

“At Project Harmony, we believe that all children are someone,” says Project Harmony Senior Director of Communications Angela Roeber. “And, all adults can be someone to a child. All it takes it the commitment to stop the cycle of child abuse. On National Be Someone Day, take the pledge to be the person to make a difference in a child’s life. Most importantly, be someone prepared to report when a child trusts you enough to tell you they’ve been hurt.”

How to Observe:

• Drop off a donation at Project Harmony on Friday, July 21, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

• Take the pledge on National Be Someone Day (www. ProjectBeSomeone.org)

• Use #BeSomeoneDay to share on social media

Project Harmony grew out of the vision of several Omaha community professionals and advocates to create a better system of protection for abused and neglected children. To learn more, go to projectharmony.com.

You can help keep the shelves stocked, especially this summer while kids are out of school and not receiving their normal free or reduced lunches. Your help is vital!

Donate today by scanning the QR code to help with the rising costs of food to keep kids from going hungry this summer. You can also help by donating in-kind donations, hosting a drive or signing up to volunteer at HeartlandHopeMission.org.

JDRF Gears Up for One Walk October 1 with Presenting Sponsor Dormie Network

Walk with over 5,000 people to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D) at this year’s JDRF One Walk on Sunday, October 1 at Mahoney State Park starting at 11:30 a.m. JDRF gratefully acknowledges One Walk presenting sponsor Dormie Network!

The One Walk aims to raise awareness for T1D and to fundraise to accelerate T1D research breakthroughs to cure, treat and prevent T1D and its complications. T1D is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. If you have T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. This means you must constantly monitor your blood-sugar level, inject or infuse insulin from a pump and carefully monitor your eating and activity every single day.

By joining the JDRF One Walk, you’ll be part of the lasting footprint made for the T1D community now, and for generations to come. Register for the One Walk today at walk.jdrf.org/omaha!

Questions about this event including sponsorship opportunities can be directed to Chris Dunn, associate executive director, at (402) 214-0638 / cdunn@jdrf.org.

JDRF has a mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. They do this by funding innovative research, advocating for government action and providing a support structure for our community. Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska Launches New Peer Mentorship Program

The Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska (BIA-NE) is excited to announce the launch of its Peer Mentorship Program. Modeled and adapted from a successful program by the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado, the program connects people who have experienced a brain injury with others who have gone through similar situations in a one-on-one mentoring relationship.

In the orientation, individuals will learn about the program, receive answers to questions and provide information about their goals, needs and why they are interested in being mentored. Once the Program Coordinator understands the individual’s situation, she will work to match the participant with a mentor who can relate to them on a similar level – someone who may have had a similar injury or similar symptoms after their injury and can act as peer support. Upon connecting with a mentor, participants will get to know each other, set goals, set expectations and how often to meet. BIA-NE expects most mentor relationships to last up to six months to a year to meet the goals set in the beginning. Individuals interested in the program can learn more at: www.biane.org/events/peer-mentorship-program.html.

The Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska was founded in 2009 to create better futures for all Nebraskans through brain injury prevention, education, advocacy and support. For more information, contact Executive Director Peggy Reisher, MSW, at peggy@biane.org or (402) 890-0606.

With warmer weather well underway and hotter temperatures not far off, residential remodeling is at the forefront of the minds of many. Having updated houses equipped for summer activities and curveballs is a must. Now is the time to update ceiling fans and air conditioning units to accommodate the heat, as well as to update flooring, paint and outdoor decks/patios to withstand the wear and tear of summer weather and activities.

Buying a new house, though maybe necessary for some, isn’t a feasible solution for most. A much more cost effective solution that allows your family to stay in the same house you know and love is residential remodeling. With residential remodeling, you can update your least favorite components of your house at an affordable rate. Why not fall in love your house all over again? Plus, residential remodeling lets you upgrade without losing all the memories and little quirks unique to the time you’ve spent living there.

With so many different ways to go about residential remodeling available, it can be an overwhelming task. Though smaller projects are a great way to get your hands dirty with some fun DIY, larger projects are often better left in the hands of professionals. Luckily, Omaha has some of the best professionals that are excited to start working on projects to make your dream house a reality. Whatever you want or need done, Omaha professionals have you covered!

First things first, to set yourself up for the best remodeling process possible, consider the following factors before making any big decisions.

1. Set a budget. What amount of money can you dedicate to remodeling? Remember, it’s important to leave a little bit of cushion in your budget for if things get more expensive than initially thought.

2. Decide which project(s) is most important. Start with the most important remodeling first to ensure that it fits into your budget. Remodeling doesn’t have to all be done at once, so be sure to get what matters most done first.

3. Be realistic about your timeline. Great things take time – rushing a project will only lead to more expenses and complications.

4. Have a design in mind before starting any remodeling. You might be good at winging a lot of things in your life, but remodeling is easier, faster and less expensive when you have an idea of what the space will look like and how it will be used before making changes.

5. Choose your contractors carefully! Work with people you trust to do a great job. If you want it done right the first time, hire people that really care.

6. All Aspects, One Company

Wouldn’t it be nice to work with just one business for your remodeling needs? With Incontro Closets & Cabinetry , most of your remodeling needs can be accomplished without outsourcing. Incontro Closets & Cabinetry is a custom manufacturer that makes everything in Omaha, completing everything for your remodeling project locally. They offer personalized design services and will produce a custom drawing for you to review before the project begins. In-home consultations and drawings are at no cost to you. Additionally, they have a 2,000-square-foot showroom showcasing the updates they can implement in your house. They do everything they can to ensure that your remodel is exactly what you want it to be.

Incontro Closets & Cabinetry will update all aspects of your house, from kitchens to bathroom vanities, garage systems, closets, Murphy wall beds, pantries and more. They’ve noticed recent interiors trending towards clean lines and new colors that achieve

a minimalistic look. Several newer kitchens are two tones, with an island being a different color than the surrounding cabinets. Whatever your vision is, they are happy to help make it a reality. When remodeling. Incontro Closets & Cabinetry advises that you spend a considerable amount of time choosing the right company to use. You want to settle on a reputable company that willingly answers every question you throw at them, such as what is to be expected, what the timeline for the project is expected to be and how they plan to go about remodeling your space. It’s your house, so take the time to ensure that the remodeling process you agree to is what is going to work best for you.

Work From Bottom to Top

If you are looking into remodeling your house, consider starting from the ground up – literally. RSW Floors & More is your local resource for all things flooring. Their floors are tough, long-lasting and well worth the expense.

The installation of flooring takes about 48 hours, but RSW Floors & More suggest that house owners prep the space beforehand to ensure that the process goes smoothly, and that you don’t have to move furniture or other things back and forth during the installation.

The renovation process might be lengthy and it might be tempting to take some things on by yourself, but it is important to be patient and let professionals do things the right way. If you want your floors to last in the long run, talk to a professional about what they can do for you. Remember, you get what you pay for!

RSW Floors & More is committed to making sure you have the best possible experience with their services. They are all about details and will make sure your project is done exactly how you want it. They will come do a courtesy check on the new flooring about a week to ten days after the job is complete. You can be sure you are getting the best possible work done on your flooring because there will be a manufacturer representative available to give a second opinion on any job that requests it. Owner and Operator Raimond Wojtalewicz schedules the job and comes to do it himself, so you know that no details will be forgotten.

A Dash of Character

If you want your house to be truly unique, you need to add character however you can. One of the easiest ways to spruce up your home is to incorporate tile. Whether adding a kitchen backsplash, entryway flooring, shower walls or an accent wall, tile and stone are excellent ways to tie your house together. The tile and stone that you select to implement into your dream home will make a big difference in the overall appearance and vibe of your house.

For tile and stone needs, Maven Tile & Stone comes highly recommended. The hands-on tile design studio has samples available in their showroom and design center for homeowners who want to get ideas and advice for their remodel.

“We strive to help you pick the best product that will meet the needs and goals of your family’s home,” shared Owner Lizett Nissenson . “We are here to make your process easier, which includes answering the technical questions and doing walk-throughs on projects during non-business hours. Plus, clients that purchase through us are offered my tile design services at no charge.”

Maven Tile & Stone has the finest selection of tile and stone from respected manufacturers from all over the world. They pride themselves on giving you the tools, advice and resources you need for your project. They are dedicated to creating the perfect vision.

Light It Up

Langer Electric prides themselves on the relationship that they build with each of their customers. Chances are, you will have more than one electrical need in your lifetime – and they want to earn your business for life. They believe they can do just that by providing quality work, competitive pricing, and convenient servicing, all while being quick and efficient. Licensed, bonded, and insured, you can trust that the experts at Langer Electric will complete your electrical remodel projects efficiently so that you can quickly get right to what you’re excited most about in the remodeling process – enjoying your new space.

“It’s pretty common for electrical work on remodels to include upgrading everything to LED,” shared Owner Chris Langer. “LEDs use 90% less electricity than the standard incandescent bulb, so you’re getting more light for less power. It’s also popular for homeowners to implement USB access throughout their house. With smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and everything else that requires a USB to charge, it’s convenient to have USB outlets available for easy access.”

If you haven’t updated the outlets in your house recently, or can’t recall the last time they were inspected, you might want to give them some attention. If your plug isn’t snug and secure when you put it in an outlet, you will definitely want to replace it; this can cause electrical arcing, or an electrical breakdown of gas that produces a prolonged electrical charge. This puts your home in serious danger of catching on fire. Other signs that your outlets need updated include: sparks, smoke, or a burning smell appearing when you plug something in; an outlet that feels hot when you touch it; the outlet cover is cracked; or if the outlet is ungrounded, meaning it only has two holes instead of three (this is more common in older homes). They may physically be a small aspect of your home, but they play a big part in how it functions, so be sure your outlets are upgraded and up-to-date!

New to You Improvements

Remodeling is made more fun if you have fun things to shop for! Whatever it is you’re searching for, or if you don’t know what will make the space perfect, Out of the Box is the place to go. Whether your taste is contemporary, traditional, primitive or eclectic, you’ll find something you love.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to find that fabulous one-of-a-kind piece and clearly imagine how it would look in your house?

They feature the best in custom doors, lighting, furniture, entire kitchens and baths, all originally curated by top interior designers. Since these items are reclaimed or recycled, they are able to offer them at highly reduced prices!

4. Continuously disinfect your pool. Regular sanitation consists of using OMNI Chlorination Stix or one-inch to three-inch tablets in your skimmer or automatic chlorinator. At all times, maintain a free chlorine level of at least 1.0 ppm to continuously kill bacteria.

AtStrictly Business , we believe it is so important to support our local nonprofits. Nonprofit organizations understand the needs of the most vulnerable in our community and work to help support causes many of us connect to. Not only do local nonprofits help enrich Nebraskan life, but they also create jobs and give workers, volunteers and donors an opportunity to be a part of something greater than themselves. When we pitch in to help nonprofits, we’re helping our communities and neighbors and keeping a culture of humanity, art and philanthropy alive.

In this Supporting Nonprofits feature, we’re highlighting a host of Omaha's most impactful nonprofits, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share their stories and promote the work they do throughout the year. We encourage our readers to keep these nonprofits top-of-mind when choosing how to give, whether it’s money, time or skill.

Bridges to Hope is a nonprofit organization serving men and women who’ve been incarcerated. This is done by providing tangible items such as furniture, clothing and household goods, donated by community members. One of the main obstacles we hear about is lack of housing for someone with a record.

For those who have been incarcerated, affordable housing is crucial for their successful reintegration back into society. Bridges to Hope is addressing this obstacle by developing a Tiny Home Village that will provide permanent supportive housing for a total of 20 individuals and/or small families. These homes will range in size between 250-500 square feet, and each will have its own sleeping area, kitchenette and bathroom with shower. Having their own individual home differs from communal living solutions by giving each person a feeling of worth, therefore a great buy-in to their community village.

To learn more, visit our website at bridgestohopene.org.

In addition to Omaha, their outreach pantries serve Valley, Macy and Walthill. Currently, families are struggling due to the effects from inflation, causing pantry numbers to soar over 50% higher than normal. With the increased demand for food and basic necessities, volunteers and donations are needed to continue surrounding clients with resources to become food secure and self-sufficient in a hope-filled environment! You can help by visiting HeartlandHopeMission.org to sign up to volunteer or make a donation.

The Foster Care Closet was created 17 years ago to speak dignity into the lives of children during the trauma of being removed from their home and transitioned into foster care. We support kids through their entire foster care journey.

We give each kid five new (not used) outfits upon entry into the foster care system and continue to provide new clothing twice a year for as long as the child remains in foster care. Our foster parents schedule a time to shop with us and every kid gets half an hour of their own shopping time.

We do not believe foster care should start in a cubicle or at the police station. We provide a quiet environment for them to begin the transition into foster care. The Foster Haven was intentionally designed to accommodate any special needs for the child or for their caregiver.

We provide a meal of the child’s choice, and we are available 24/7 for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to bring a child to be with us before they must enter the foster care system.

We have trained staff to support children in those first hours of their foster care journey. We also have a mobile closet program to reach kids in all 92 counties of Nebraska. For more information, please visit www.fostercarecloset.org.

Child Saving Institute (CSI) was founded in 1892 and has been dedicated to the needs of children and families in the greater Omaha area for over 131 years. The mission is “responding to the cry of a child,” but it is the vision that guides us as we work to give the children we serve safe, happy childhoods. CSI’s vision is that “all children have homes where hope is kindled and dreams can be achieved.”

CSI’s programming is diverse, but so are the needs of today’s children and youth. Services address the need for early childhood development and high-quality childcare, which we offer through our early childhood education program at our two Omaha childcare centers. Other services offered focus on the prevention, intervention and healing from child abuse, neglect and trauma. Programs include in-home support for families struggling to stay together, foster care, mental health services including therapy and medication management, parent support and education programs for young and expectant parents, an emergency shelter for youth temporarily displaced and who have nowhere to live and adoption services for older children and youth in foster care.

With your support, CSI continues to serve nearly 3,000 kids and families each year and touches thousands more, improving children’s lives and helping them discover the joy of childhood. For more information, visit childsaving.org or call (402) 5536000. Stay connected with CSI by following the organization on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

For 15 years, Autism Action Partnership (AAP) has provided targeted programs and services to fill critical gaps in the autism community.

Serving nearly 600 students, the schools in the CUES School System – Sacred Heart, All Saints and Holy Name – anchor their East Omaha neighborhoods. CUES provides a safe place for students to learn academic, social and interpersonal skills. Many CUES families face difficult financial circumstances and simply cannot afford to pay full tuition. They choose our Schools to give their children a faithbased education. CUES students thrive in a culture of love, kindness and excellence.

THE GAP

• CUES never turns away a child due to inability to pay!

• Underwriting the cost of education is our greatest need.

• The total cost to educate a child is $12,200 per year.

• Every CUES family qualifies for financial education assistance.

CUES IMPACT

• 65% of our families live in neighborhoods that fall 42 percent below Omaha’s median income.

• 93% of our students are students of color.

• 96% of CUES alumni graduated from high school in 2022, compared to 74% for Omaha Public Schools. Learn more about CUES at cuesschools.org.
