LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

PAIGE ZUTAVERN - President (402) 730-0096 | Paige@StrictlyBusinessOmaha.com

Our Two Cents on an Attitude of Gratitude The “attitude of gratitude” perspective/ mindset is a great approach to recognizing the positive aspects of life and being thankful and appreciative for what we have as opposed to what we might lack. Here at Strictly Business, we have plenty to be grateful for. We have a great team and amazing clients to work with as we strive to boost local shopping and community support – our work is something that we all enjoy doing. This past month, we said goodbye to one of our favorites – Cemre Lively. Though we no longer get to see her every day at work, we have gained another supporter and friend. In her place, we are excited to welcome our new Director of Operations Kacey Russell. She is a great addition to our team and we are thankful for her stepping into such an important role. With the holidays not too far off, our minds are wandering from our work to our personal lives, where we all have various things we are appreciative of. Below is an expression of our attitude of gratitude this holiday season: Paige Zutavern - President: “My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, and I am so excited that it is almost here because it is all about spending time with family. I love cooking, and especially love it on Thanksgiving because I’m getting to spend time with family while I do it. The great tasting feast is an amazing reward for all the labor.” Shae Withington - Writer/Editor: “Christmas is one of my favorite times of year. I love all the lights that people use to decorate. Driving around and looking at them reminds me of just how beautiful our city can be, and of how much fun a few friends/family members can have doing something so simple.”

Kacey Russell - Director of Operations: “Christmas is my favorite time of the year because of all the holiday traditions my family has. My favorite tradition that I always look forward to is picking out the perfect Christmas tree and decorating it while singing Christmas carols at the top of our lungs.” Devan Kirkpatrick - Art Director: “This time of year, I am excited about all of the sports that are taking place. The NBA and NHL are getting underway, MLB and MLS are in playoff mode and the NFL is in full-swing. ‘It’s too cold outside’ is an excuse I recommend everyone use to allow ample time for watching all of the exciting sporting events.” This month, we are also showing our appreciation and gratitude for Veterans. Our Veterans Day Spread is highlighting local businesses that wholeheartedly support the Veterans in our community. Let’s show them our support for showing Veterans support! Veterans have selflessly served our country, dedicating a significant portion of their lives to protect our freedoms and uphold our way of life. Through their courage and commitment, they have shouldered the weight of responsibility in the face of danger, both at home and abroad. Their service embodies the essence of duty and patriotism, and their sacrifices, whether in times of conflict or peace, deserve our utmost respect. By recognizing and supporting Veterans, we not only honor their past sacrifices, but also harness their potential to continue making positive contributions to our nation long after their military service has ended. – The Strictly Business Staff

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, and I am so excited that it is almost here because it is all about spending time with family.

BUSINESS NEWS Pittenger & Anderson Makes CNBC Financial Advisor 100

On September 12, Pittenger & Anderson (P&A) was named to the CNBC FA 100 list of top financial advisory firms in the U.S., coming in at number 11 for 2023. This marks the fifth year in a row P&A has made the list, which covers the prior 12 months. P&A is the only Nebraska firm to make the list in 2023. The CNBC FA 100 rankings are based on data culled from a list of 40,646 advisory firms by AccuPoint Solutions. Factors include advisory firm’s regulatory record, years in business, number of CFP certificants, advisors, total employees, ratio of advisors to total employees, assets under management, discretionary AUM, total accounts managed, number of states where registered and country of domicile. Each section was weighted according to specific criteria created by CNBC/AccuPoint. The FA100 is not a pay-to-play accolade; CNBC does not charge advisors any fees to make the list. To use the CNBC FA 100 logo online and in print, CNBC required P&A to sign a licensing agreement, however, licensing was not a prerequisite to make the FA 100. Learn more about the CNBC FA 100 at www.cnbc.com/top-ratedwealth-management-firms. Since 1995, Pittenger & Anderson has guided individuals and families going through money-in-motion events, such as retirement, business sale or seeking a new advisor. P&A is a fee-only Registered Investment Advisor and full-time fiduciary providing investment management and financial planning to over 800 clients in 34 U.S. states. Learn more at pittand.com.

Luxury Landscape Celebrates Five Years in Business Luxury Landscape turned five in October! Over the last five years, there have been a lot of changes, challenges and growth. Luxury started with a shop being a storage unit, while Ken and Jackie ran the office out of their house and garage. As they have grown, they have faced other challenges including keeping with demand and the hiring process. “Last year was a major restructuring of the business,” Owner Jackie Svoboda said. “We desperately needed to make changes as we were busting at the seams in our shop, falling behind on projects due to lack of crew members and the home office was no longer feasible based on our growth.” In the last five years, Luxury has acquired a large shop, a brand new office, hired many amazing crew members with several years of experience and a full-time Office Manager, plus added additional trucks to their fleet. Having a new office space has added so many benefits! Allan, their Office Manager, has improved Luxury’s communication with customers and employees and has improved several areas of productivity. The addition of Kyle, their Foreman, who has several years of landscaping experience, has improved the scope of projects they are able to bid and complete, and his management skills are stellar! E W ! Half-Day N Kinetic by Windstream Successfully Trials 100G

Digital Coherent Optical (DCO) Transceiver

Kinetic by Windstream, the leading provider of fiber-based connectivity, collaboration and security services for businesses and homes across an 18-state footprint, has successfully trialed the 100G digital coherent optical (DCO) transceiver over a live, existing network in Little Rock, AR. Kinetic continues to push the boundaries of innovation, partnering with Coherent Corp. to deploy the new pluggable transceiver, which requires less equipment to expand network capacity. The technology offers a simpler, more efficient way to bring high-speed internet to more homes and businesses across America while reducing carbon costs and offering an opportunity for smarter fiber investment in communities. The 100G DCO transceiver is as much as ten times more energy efficient and requires a fraction of the space and power of traditional transport solutions. When plugged into a router, it eliminates the need for additional transponder hardware – and the need to purchase, install and power that equipment. “Kinetic is committed to bringing fiber connectivity to businesses and homes across rural America. This innovation will accelerate the scale of our network in a sustainable way,” said Jeff Austin, Chief Technology Officer at Kinetic. “Not only does its small form factor reduce our carbon footprint, but it is also interoperable with legacy networks, eliminating the need to rebuild costly network infrastructures.” Kinetic by Windstream is a business unit of Windstream, a privately held communications and software company. MATT

Matt Kasik APACE

Meet Matt Kasik, CEO at Apace – formerly Region V Services. Tell us a little about your business. - Apace is Nebraska’s largest provider of services to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We support approximately 800 individuals at 20 locations within southeast Nebraska, including the Lincoln and Omaha metro area. Apace offers new experiences and opportunities that enrich life for people with disabilities through residential and independent living supports, day programs and job services. Seeing people as people, Apace connects individuals with disabilities to the resources they need to control (and celebrate) everyday life. How did you get started in the business? - My oldest brother, Randy, has cerebral palsy. Living with and around him my whole life prepared me in ways that I could not have done through the workplace alone. When I make decisions now, I think, ‘How might this affect the people we support or their families?’ What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - I’ve experienced several, but one of the most challenging initiatives that I have been a part of has been rebranding of Region V Services to Apace. Renaming a 50-year organization is very hard, especially considering the personal nature we have with our employers. Our longest tenured staff just celebrated her 45th anniversary, and I would guess that she proudly stated that she worked at Region V Services hundreds if not thousands of times. Because of this personal nature, gaining consensus was hard but was ultimately achieved. We chose the name ‘Apace,’ which means going or advancing at the same rate as something and can be used as a synonym for alongside. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - While I worked at the Journal Star, I started Journal Star Recycling, a curbside recycling service. No other newspaper in the country operated a service like this, making this truly unique. Bringing this service from a concept to the reality of serving over 4,000 customers was personally gratifying but also had a measurable impact on the community: between 2011 and 2019, disposal rates at Lincoln’s landfill decreased by 10%. Tell us a little about your family. - My wife Lisa and I will be celebrating our 20-year anniversary in November. We have three daughters: our oldest daughter Paige and her wife Susannah live in Omaha, Leighton is a junior at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and Ashlynn is a senior at Lincoln East High School. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I enjoy running, hiking, biking and lake time. I prefer a good football or basketball game to a show or movie. What local nonprofit organization are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? The Apace Foundation (formerly the Region V Foundation). Our foundation supports the mission of Apace and aims to improve the lives of those with disabilities in Nebraska. In recent years, we have started Empowering Possible grants, which provide direct funding to an individual or group who has an unfunded need. Over the past two years, we have awarded funding for adaptive equipment, once in a lifetime trips or experiences and funding for a choir. This choir is based out of our Crete location and is made up of the individuals we support and staff. Our choir performed in the Rotunda of the State Capital building last year. Strictly Business NOVEMBER 2023

Meet Alex Adams, Owner of Type A Furniture. Tell us a little about your business. - Type A Furniture builds custom furniture with wood from family owned Nebraska sawmills. How did you get started in the business? - When we purchased our home, there were trees that needed to be removed from our backyard and I wanted to use the wood instead of mulching it. I started making things for friends and family and started getting requests for furniture and took it from a part-time hobby to fulltime work. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Designing and building miniature surgical robots at the Advanced Surgical Technologies Lab for Dr. Farritor when I was in college. Because we built what we designed instead of sending it somewhere else to be made, I was forced to think through how to design for manufacturing. The skills learned during this time were foundational for future work. Tell us a little about your family. - My son, Peter, is in second grade and enjoys helping in the garden, swimming and loves Legos (just like me). My wife, Alix, loves riding her horses, especially with our son. And yes, my wife and I have the same first name! What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - The height of Covid was tough, but it enabled me to spend more time with my son and has forever changed the flexibility of work into everyday life. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Watching a movie at home while catching up on some laundry is so relaxing. Bonus points if it’s a rainy day! What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I was a long distance runner for Nebraska in college and patented a design to make changing spikes in track shoes easier. It received approval to be used in the 2012 London Olympics and was sent with some athletes I knew who were competing. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - "How many times have you noticed that it's the little quiet moments in the midst of life that seem to give the rest extra-special meaning?" – Fred Rogers If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Kind. If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Super speed because I could get more things done in a day! What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - I recently finished Hybrid Woodworking, but I love any woodworking book published by Lost Art Press. Their hardbound books feel great in hand and are made in the US with top quality materials. What is your favorite movie? - Iron Man (2008). Not only was it the kickstart to the MCU, but it was also the revival of Robert Downey Jr’s acting career. What is your favorite local Lincoln restaurant? - I love the authentic Italian food at Florio’s. I don’t have a favorite because everything is great, but I love getting seafood when I get the opportunity to eat at Florio’s. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - I can be reached via e-mail at Alex@TypeAFurniture.com or call/text at (402) 366-9829. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

HEARTLAND CANCER FOUNDATION Meet Chris Blum, CFRE, Executive Director at Heartland Cancer Foundation. Tell us a little about your business. - The Heartland Cancer Foundation believes that no cancer patient should fall behind on treatment because they struggle to afford their everyday expenses. Our mission is to provide practical and immediate financial assistance to eligible cancer patients in our community so they can focus on healing. We provide compassion and hope and remove barriers to care by providing housing and transportation grants to patients who are struggling with both a cancer diagnosis and financial hardship. Our three largest fundraisers are the Mardi Gras Gala, Oncology Symposium and Heartland Golf Classic, for which we are always seeking sponsors and business partners. And with Giving Tuesday right around the corner and 2023 coming to a close, the foundation is currently focused on outreach. CJ plays the trumpet, plays baseball, basketball and runs cross country. Lori and I both coach Junior High Cross Country at Mickle and St. John’s Catholic School. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Get a workout in, play some golf, go out for lunch or dinner. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I have been to all 50 states and have played golf in 49 of them. I need to play golf in Rhode Island. If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Super Speed like The Flash. What local nonprofit organizations are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? Meet Ela Schlisner, Owner of Underfoot Flooring Solutions. Tell us a little about your business - Underfoot Flooring Solutions is a local family owned and operated commercial and residential flooring business. We provide and install floor coverings. How did you get started in the business? - I fell in love with a flooring installer. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The change from going from an employee to a business owner is a huge shift of responsibility, leadership, pressure and personal challenges. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - The continued growth of both of our businesses – Underfoot Flooring and PureCare Dry Carpet Cleaning. PureCare has grown from a two-person crew, owner-operated business to a staff of five with two cleaning crews. Underfoot grew form two people and one sub-contracted installation crew to a staff of four with two full-time sub-contracted installation crews. Tell us a little about your family. - We call our family a “New age Brady Bunch.” We are a blended family of eight kids. I have four – my boys Fletcher and Jack, my adopted daughter Alysa and my foster daughter Amanda. Cory’s four include the oldest Tara, his son Brayden (who leads our PureCare crews) and twins Cadie and Carlie. We are almost empty nesters, as the last one graduated college this year! What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - On February 2, 2012, my first-born son Fletcher Dencklau had a sudden brain aneurysm as he was walking out of his karate class. February 4, 2012, the doctors told me that he was brain dead. It was a month before his 15th birthday when he was pronounced dead. He was an organ donor and his heart was given to a father of five. When I was blessed to get to be Fletcher’s mother at the young age of 19, I grew up quickly. I was given the gift of motherhood for the first time and fell in love with it. I became a single mom and college student. I was promoted to management in my job by the age of 23 and purchased my first home at 24. After Fletcher’s death, everything in my life changed. I had to change my career in the healthcare industry as it was too painful. I went back to college to continue in business management and spent every waking moment with Jack, Alysa and Amanda. I held my kids and my family tighter. The gratitude I hold onto, for getting to be Fletcher’s mothers, even though I wish would have been longer, gives me a daily loving perspective with each person I get to interact with. I am proud of the mother I get to be to all my children and grateful for love that motivates me daily. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Watch movies and snuggle, spend time with family, play with my grand kids and go out with my husband and friends. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - We own a carpeted school bus. If you had a theme song, what would it be? - “I have decided” by Amy Grant or “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Fly or teleportation, than I could get anywhere at anytime. Which talent would you most like to have? - I can crochet and knitt. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - My 25-year-old brother was killed tragically in 2018. Giving his eulogy was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. We’re so thankful for all the amazing staff we’ve had over the years to get us to this point. The other, and just as important achievement, is the opportunity we have had to support local nonprofits and help our community. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5. It was the Bible verse that I had used in my brother’s Eulogy. If you had a theme song, what would it be? - “I’ll be There for You” by The Rembrants. What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - Singing. I love karaoke and would love to have more of it in the Haymarket! Danny was having pain in the right side of his lower back, the right groin and the right thigh area, and the pain was interfering with his ability to run. When he went to Ryan for help, the cause of the problem was immediately diagnosed and they scheduled a series of successful physical therapy sessions. According to Danny, “Ryan Wade, Co-owner and Director of Physical Therapy, is a genius at identifying and remediating physical asymmetries. Starla Post, Office Manager, runs the non-therapy functions of the office is truly a Star! She comforts incoming patients, supervises scheduling, answers the always-busy phone and embodies the can-do spirit of Husker Rehab. Katelyn Huenink, Physical Therapist Assistant, was excellent rehabbing me to fitness several years ago when she took the lead role in helping me recover from rotator cuff surgery. Mariah Markwardt, Physical Therapy Tech, led me through completion of specific therapeutic movements designed by Ryan. She was always friendly, always helpful and always knew the correct response required of me. Peyton Winkle, Physical Therapy Tech, filled in for Mariah several times. She also was always friendly, always helpful and always knew the correct response required of me. Thank you, Husker Rehab team!” Learn more about Husker Rehab at huskerrehab.com.

Since 1969, the Epilepsy Foundation has recognized November as National Epilepsy Awareness Month (NEAM). To learn more about the importance of NEAM, visit www.epilepsy. com/stories/importance-national-epilepsy-awareness-month. Although 3.4 million people and their families are affected by epilepsy in the United States, much is still misunderstood about this brain disorder. People with epilepsy and seizures experience multiple daily challenges, such mood changes, sleep, thinking and memory issues, social and financial concerns. Judgement and lack of information about the condition can also create more obstacles for members of the epilepsy community. NEAM is an entire month dedicated to uplifting individuals living with the epilepsies and educating the public on what it means to experience seizures. The Epilepsy Foundation is a national voluntary health agency dedicated solely to the welfare of the nearly 3.4 million people living with epilepsy in the U.S. and their families. The Foundation works to ensure that people with seizures are able to participate in all life experiences and to promote research for a cure. Nebraska Community Foundation Network Reinvests Over $500M into State The Nebraska Community Foundation (NCF) network reached a major milestone in 2023, reinvesting more than $500 million throughout greater Nebraska in just under 30 years of community building work. There are currently 245 affiliated funds in the NCF network serving 269 communities in 81 of Nebraska’s 93 counties. In the most recent fiscal year (July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023), NCF affiliated funds reinvested $54 million in their communities through grants and disbursements – the most in a single year since NCF’s establishment in 1994. The NCF network ended the fiscal year with $227 million in total assets. Across the NCF network, all grantmaking is determined at the local level according to local needs and priorities. This past year, volunteers have used their resources to fund ESL classes in Perkins County, a new aquatic center in Waverly, an early childhood center for Loup and Garfield counties, the ongoing cultural exchange between southwest Nebraska and North Omaha, an all-day interactive science event in Pender, housing efforts in Keith County and so much more. The NCF network convenes November 9 at Kearney’s Younes Conference Center for its 2023 Annual Fund Training and Celebration, themed “Dreams Inspire Dreams.” NCF volunteers and fellow ambitious Nebraskans will gather for a day of peer learning and training on a variety of topics including fundraising, marketing, impact grantmaking, community economic development and more. Nebraska Statewide Arboretum Awarded $10M Community Forestry Grant from USDA The Nebraska Statewide Arboretum (NSA) was recently awarded a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service to strengthen Nebraska’s urban forest infrastructure in disadvantaged communities across Nebraska. NSA will do this through tree planting, tree maintenance and removal and workforce development in both urban and rural areas of the state. NSA will serve as a “pass-through” administrator of the $10 million grant by creating competitive sub-award programs under its current granting structure to accomplish the objectives over the five-year grant period. One hundred percent of the urban forest infrastructure work that will take place with the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) grant funds will align with the Justice40 initiative, which aims to bring resources to disadvantaged communities most impacted by climate change, pollution and environmental hazards. Programs will include tree removal, including ash trees infected with emerald ash borer, in both private and public landscapes; tree plantings to mitigate urban heat island effect in communities that qualify for grant funding; and the implementation of workforce training programs to increase the number of certified arborists and other tree care professionals in the state. The Nebraska Statewide Arboretum is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 1978 that plants Nebraska for healthy people, vibrant communities and a resilient environment. Record Ser vices, Inc. (CRS), located in the Lincoln Trade Center, is proud to announce the opening of its new office space dedicated to the production of braille resources. This expansion marks a significant commitment to serving the worldwide visually impaired community and enhancing access to braille literature for all. Earlier this year, CRS received $597,000 from the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists to increase its braille production capacity. “With this expansion, we will contribute to braille literacy and address the book famine that currently exists, with less than 10% of published works available in accessible formats in developed countries and less than 1% in undeveloped countries,” said Diane Thurber, President of CRS. The new office space is equipped with technology designed to streamline the braille production process. From high-speed embossers to specialized software for transcribing written text into braille to workspace to assemble the braille books, every detail has been considered to ensure efficiency and precision. The organization hopes this expansion will not only meet many of the immediate needs of the visually impaired community, but also inspire other institutions to prioritize accessibility in their outreach efforts. These organizations include Community Development Resources, Family Service Lincoln, Habitat for Humanity Lincoln/Lancaster County, Lincoln Housing Authority, Nebraska Housing Resource, NeighborWorks Lincoln and South of Downtown Community Development Organization. Bridges to Hope Breaks Ground for Hope Village Bridges to Hope has officially closed on p ro p e r t y from the City of Lincoln at North 27th and Leighton Avenue! This land will be the future home of Hope Village, Lincoln’s first tiny home village! Bridges to Hope is excited to bring this housing solution to individuals who have been justice involved and to the Lincoln community. They are partnering with the Department of Corrections and Millard Lumber to build the homes in a correctional setting, giving men and women valuable work experience. Bridges to Hope held a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Friday, October 27, to celebrate this milestone. Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird began the ceremony with opening remarks, and their neighbors at Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach graciously hosted a breakfast reception afterwards – a true community partnership. Bridges to Hope provides services to men and women who have been released from incarceration and are making the transition to a productive life outside of the cell. Their fundraising efforts include Bud’s Thrift Shoppe (2226 O St.), which helps generate money for the sustainability of the organization – 100% of the proceeds from the store go directly back to fund Bridges to Hope’s mission. Catholic Social Services Receives 2023 Sustainability Award from Keep Nebraska Beautiful Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska (CSS), was the winner of a 2023 Sustainability Award by the Keep Nebraska Beautiful organization. CSS was given the award in the “Civic/ Non-Profit Organization” category for its strong emphasis on sustainability, aiming not only to generate funds for its vital services aimed at helping the poor and marginalized, but also to be responsible environmental stewards. “Our goal is to extend the lifecycle of donations to our four thrift stores throughout southern Nebraska,” said Katie Patrick, Executive Director of CSS. “We do this through regifting, reselling or recycling them and therefore mitigating the potential of items ending up in the landfill.” The thrift stores are located in Lincoln, Auburn, Hastings and Imperial, NE. “From October 2022 to June 2023, CSS recycled 88.5 tons of clothing, 8.5 tons of shoes and two tons of purses and belts,” said Patrick. She explained that when donors contribute clothing, for example, CSS evaluates the items' condition. Wearable clothing is either distributed directly to clients in need or sold in the thrift stores, with all proceeds supporting CSS programs. CSS is a nonprofit organization that has been around for nearly a century helping people in need of all backgrounds and faiths across 24,000 square miles of southern Nebraska. CSS programs include Family Support Services, providing crucial financial assistance; the St. Gianna Program, offering support to survivors of domestic violence and those facing crisis pregnancies; Food Market and Meal Services; Refugee Resettlement; Immigration Legal Services; and Employment Services. CSS can be found at www.csshope.org.

JDRF Goes Blue for World Diabetes Day November 14 JDRF, the leading global organization funding T1D research, invites the community to join in commemorating National Diabetes Awareness Month this November by raising awareness of T1D and the urgent need to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. Go Blue with JDRF on Tuesday, November 14, World Diabetes Day, to help raise awareness of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Wear blue, take a photo and share to social media using #GoBlueforJDRF! Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which insulinproducing beta cells in the pancreas are mistakenly destroyed by the body’s immune system. T1D seems to have a genetic component. It occurs in children and adults. Its causes are not fully known, and there is currently no cure. People with T1D are dependent on injected or pumped insulin to survive. Before a type 1 diabetes diagnosis, both children and adults often have the following symptoms: frequent urination, increased thirst, dry mouth, itchy or dry skin, increased appetite, unexplained weight loss and yeast infections. 402 Creamery is back in Downtown Lincoln Many were shocked when 402 Creamery announced on April 10 that they would be leaving the Historic Haymarket. Their Facebook post stated, “We have some bittersweet news… our time in the Haymarket is coming to a close. BUT, we won’t be too far away at our new location in the Telegraph District.” 402 Creamery closed its Haymarket location on April 16 and opened its Telegraph location on April 21. Since moving to the Telegraph District, 402 Creamery has noticed a change in its customers. Free parking is available and there is outside seating in front of The Mill Tea and Coffee. 402 Creamery now has a bigger dining area for people to spread out and enjoy the colorful atmosphere. Mannix mentioned people are more inclined to sit inside and enjoy their sweet treat. “[We’re] trying to make the best ice cream we can, while providing the best customer service that we can,” Mannix said. “We’re not buying other people’s ice cream and scooping it here.” 402 Creamery makes all its ice cream at its south location and then distributes it to the other places around town. “We’re doing the entire process from start to finish,” Mannix said. “We’re creating unique flavors that people enjoy and [are] just trying to create an environment where you can get ice cream.” Some fan-favorite flavors include “Tiger Stripes,” a cream cheese ice cream with pieces of Oreo cookies and caramel swirls, and “Triple Threat,” a sweet cream ice cream with chunks of monster cookie dough, funfetti cookie dough and chocolate chip cookie dough. “We do a collaboration month in which all five of our flavors showcase an ingredient that is from another small business,” shared Mannix. “It’s just really fun to showcase other small businesses. [Small businesses in Lincoln are] doing some incredible stuff, and not everyone knows about them. Hopefully we can bring some awareness to them by using an ingredient from them.” Mannix strives to partner with neighboring businesses to create out-of-the-box flavors that Lincolnites look forward to every month. 402 Creamery is open Sunday through Wednesday from noon to 9 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from noon to 10 p.m.

Chris Robinett, CPA SP Group P.C.

What Will You Use in the Next 12 Months? If you’ve had a great financial year and are looking to set yourself up for another great year, it can be wise to upgrade technology, equipment and employee benefit plans at the end of the year. Saving tax money while also streamlining your business sounds like a great idea, right? When done correctly, it greatly benefits businesses. However, there are instances where paying taxes can be cheaper than upgrades that aren’t necessary. So, how do you know what purchases are smart to make at the end

of the year? “I always ask my clients if what they want to purchase is going to be used in the next 12 months, and how important it is that they use it in the next year,” shared Chris Robinett, CPA, with SP Group, P.C. “If the technology or equipment they are wanting to purchase will be used frequently and benefit their operation, then I tell them to go ahead and make the purchase. However, if it isn’t something that is going to be used regularly or make a significant impact in their operation, it becomes a cash flow issue and I advise against it.” Smart expenditures vary with every industry, and with every business within that industry. As such, it is important to have a team of trusted advisors who know the right questions to ask and that will provide an objective opinion. The professionals at SP Group, P.C. are the type of trusted advisors you want on your side when it comes to the financial standing of your business. Address Business Needs November and December are the most common months for businesses to project future income and how that flow will affect their financial standing. During end-of-year financial meetings, it is important to discuss how the year went as well as prepare for March/April tax payments. One of the most common ways to mitigate tax payments is to purchase equipment or prepay known expenses, though it isn’t always the best Tom Docter option for overall financial standing. Lutz According to Lutz, there are factors other than reducing taxes that are just as important when considering end-of-year spending. “Many businesses are so focused on reducing their tax liability that they put themselves in a bind somewhere else, usually in terms of cash flow. While reducing taxes is important, it's crucial to balance this objective with other financial considerations,” shared Tax Manager Tom Docter. “Year-end tax planning is more difficult and more important this year than it has been in almost five years with the depreciation changes and pass-through entity tax at the state level. It’s imperative to meet with your CPA firm before the end of the year to determine cash flow needs in December, March or April.”

It is important to balance your end-of-year spending between necessary investments and prudent financial management to achieve your long-term goals. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

Some factors that are just as important as, if not more important than, reducing taxes when considering end-of-year spending include effective cash flow management, strategic planning and the fulfillment of essential business needs. Nobody likes surprise tax bills, so even if businesses decide not to go through with any year-end spending, the comfort that comes with planning and understanding upcoming tax payments is worth the time it takes to meet with their CPA. Flexibility of Location Your business location plays a crucial role in the development of an annual business plan. It's vital to assess whether your current space aligns with your operational needs, especially in a rapidly changing business landscape. If your workspace is approaching or exceeding capacity, it may be time to consider expansion or reconfiguration. On the other hand, if changes like remote work, drop shipping Cathy Kottwitz or customer pickup options have become a Guidrock Commercial Realty LLC long-term strategy, you might find yourself with surplus space or different space needs for your business. Before moving or changing the setup of your location, you’ll want to talk with a commercial real estate agency about meeting your needs for the coming year. One that comes highly recommended is Guiderock Commercial Realty LLC. “We advise businesses to maximize their options with their real estate decisions,” shared Guiderock Commercial Realty Owner Cathy Kottwitz. “Flexibility is important for a business that wants to excel, so we suggest two key steps when thinking about commercial real estate. First, start planning real estate decisions early. Second, seek advice from industry professionals, such as attorneys, bankers and commercial real estate agents. These two pieces of advice can help a business maximize their real estate options and ultimately help them achieve their goals for 2024 and beyond.”

Tax withholding calculations should be reviewed to align with current regulations and individual employee circumstances. Compliance with tax regulations at various levels and the filing of requisite forms are essential, while Terry Clark reviewing fringe benefits and deductions TAC Payroll Solutions ensures accurate year-end financial records. Holiday Cheer H

osting Thanksgiving and Christmas can be fun but also a bit tricky. Preparing your home for holiday guests involves a combination of cleaning, decorating and food preparation that can take you longer than you might think. The first step is to clean your home and clear away any clutter that could get in the way of your guests. You don’t need to stress about making everything meticulous – nobody is going to look in the closet you hid everything in on their way to the bathroom that’s on a separate floor. If you’re worried about that, or want a better clean anyway, look at hiring a professional that will take care of everything for you. There are plenty of great local businesses right here in Lincoln that are happy to help you clean among other things. Next, consider adding a touch of holiday decoration to boost festivity. You don’t need to go overboard; even simple touches like placing a wreath on the front door, stringing up some holiday lights and adorning a beautifully decorated tree can set the holiday mood. One last thing that is important to consider for your holiday party at home is the food. Deciding what to make for the main focus of the meal is the easiest place to start. From there, figure out what sides you want to make and what dessert you want to finish the night off. If you aren’t cooking a big meal, or are having people over for an extended period of time, planning snacks ahead of time can be a tremendous help. Though some of us love to cook, if you aren’t a great cook or don’t have the time to cook everything you want at the holiday meal/party, consider catering. Some of our favorite foods made by the best Lincoln chefs can be delivered right to your doorstep.

Whether you need an elegant centerpiece, a quick gift or a delicious appetizer, Edible Arrangements’ fresh-fruit arrangements are the perfect gift. Don’t Forget the Wine Selecting the perfect wine to accompany your holiday meal is no easy task. There are countless options, with each complimenting your festive table differently. For the Thanksgiving turkey, it is recommended to include a versatile option such as a light- to medium-bodied Pinot Noir. Its red fruit flavors and balanced acidity pair beautifully with both white and dark meat, making it a favorite for Thanksgiving. For those who prefer white wine, a Chardonnay Barb Ballard with moderate oak and bright acidity James Arthur Vinyards can harmonize with the varied flavors of your meal. If you’re going for a sweeter note, a Riesling can be an excellent choice to complement the sweet and savory elements of Thanksgiving dishes. Though these specific wines might not be available to you, ones very similar in composition and taste are just as good to pair with your holiday meals! If you would have wine leftover, which we are sure you won’t, they are all excellent choices for your Christmas dinner as well. James Arthur Vineyards can provide you with premium wine selections to complement your family’s holiday meals and festivities, and answer any questions you may have during the selection process. Their range of wines, including holiday-themed varieties, are sure to be a great addition to your holiday celebration. “Two of our most popular holiday wines include our Sleighbell Blush and Santa’s Secrete. They are great to include in your dinner and are also the perfect gift for a holiday gathering,” stated Owner Barb Ballard. Thoughtful Gifts for You and Your Guests Taking care of yourself during the holiday season is crucial, especially with the stress that often accompanies it. John Aguirre from Ovation Salon emphasizes the importance of self-care amidst the hustle and bustle of holiday planning and commitments. “With the pressure of shopping mall crowds and potential family conflicts, it's easy to become overwhelmed,” John shared. “I John Aguirre recommend pampering yourself with a Ovation Salon facial or a hair-care treatment to rejuvenate and de-stress. It's essential not to forget about your own wellbeing while being overly concerned about everyone else's holiday experience.” Ovation Salon not only offers a space for self-care but also provides a range of products that can make thoughtful gifts for your loved ones. Among their offerings, wigs stand out as versatile options. Ovation stocks a variety of wig types, including synthetic and human hair wigs from top brands. Wigs can be valuable for those experiencing hair loss, dealing with the side effects of cancer treatments or simply desiring a new look without committing to permanent hair changes. Consider gifting a loved one a gift card to Ovation so they can choose how they want to pamper themselves, adding a personal touch to their self-care during the holiday season. So Clean it Looks New Deep cleaning your floors in preparation for the holidays is a smart way to ensure that your home sparkles. This entails going beyond routine maintenance to address embedded dirt, stains and scuffs. To save you the time and hassle, consider hiring a professional floor cleaner such as PureCare Carpet Cleaning. Rather than employing traditional carpet cleaning methods, which often leave excess moisture that can lead to issues like mold growth, #PrintProudDigitalSmart

When it comes to cleaning floors, many people tend to just vacuum and wait far too long to deep clean their floors. While vacuuming serves as a quick and efficient way to eliminate surface dirt and debris, it doesn’t address the embedded grime, allergens and stains that accumulate over time. Top Spot Cleaning & Solutions Too knows the importance of having clean floors for guests, especially if they are staying for a few days and have allergies or sensitivities. “My fundamental carpet-cleaning advice is that if you can visually tell that your carpets are dirty, you’ve waited too long to clean them,” emphasized Top Spot Owner Doug Neill. “It’s essential to recognize that appearances can be deceiving, and while your floors may seem clean on the surface, they could be silently dispersing airborne contaminants that affect your indoor air quality.” Memorable Gifts and Delicious Cake Nothing Bundt Cakes specializes in creating delicious and beautifully crafted desserts that are ideal for holiday gatherings. Strictly Business NOVEMBER 2023

emory care for seniors is a highly specialized and compassionate approach to senior living that addresses the unique challenges faced by individuals grappling with cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer’s disease or various forms of dementia. These facilities are specifically designed to provide a supportive, secure and structured environment that caters to the distinct needs of each resident. One key aspect of memory care is the presence of trained and empathetic staff who can offer individualized care plans. These plans typically encompass assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing and meal preparation, as well as medication management to ensure residents receive the proper treatment for their conditions. Memory care facilities also often place a strong emphasis on cognitive stimulation and engagement. Activities tailored to residents’ abilities and interests, such as reminiscence therapy, art therapy and music therapy, are integrated into daily routines to help maintain cognitive function, foster social connections and reduce anxiety and agitation. The overarching goal of memory care is to improve the quality of life for seniors facing memory-related challenges while providing peace of mind to their families. It aims to promote a sense of dignity and comfort, helping residents maintain their independence for as long as possible while living in a supportive and nurturing environment that prioritizes their wellbeing. Families often find solace in knowing their loved ones are receiving specialized care that not only meets their physical needs, but also recognizes their individuality and the importance of preserving their memories and identity. When it comes to memory care, the local professionals of Lincoln truly are some of the best. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

Personalized Care at Home In-home care is a common alternative to senior living for those who can no longer live independently. It is a compassionate and tailored healthcare service that allows seniors dealing with dementia to receive essential assistance and support in the comfort of their own homes. This type of care not only promotes independence and a sense of familiarity, but also ensures that individuals can maintain their quality of life and dignity while receiving personalized, Deb Maguire Caring Friends In Home Care one-on-one attention that meets their specific needs and preferences. Caring Friends In Home Care takes an approach that not only aims to improve the quality of life for those with memory impairments, but also offers invaluable support to families, providing them with peace of mind as their loved ones receive specialized, compassionate care. “Many seniors have lived in the same house for decades, and moving to a new, often smaller home is a difficult and emotional process,” shared Director of Health Services Deb Maguire, LPN. “Here at Caring Friends In Home Care, we provide light housekeeping, weekly meal prep, assistance with dressing, bathing, grooming and laundry, and we adjust our care to fit the new needs as a senior ages. If the senior progresses to where being at home is no longer safe, Caring Friends can follow the senior to a community to help make the transition easier and more familiar.” With the right care tailored to their needs, seniors with cognitive decline can age with dignity, enjoyment and independence. Whether they get to remain in their home for a few months or the rest of their lives, each moment matters, and each connection they make will continue with them. Scheduled Medication Scheduled medication management plays a critical role in the care of individuals with memory loss. Failure to adhere to prescribed medication regimens can lead to worsening symptoms, increased health complications and decreased quality of life, but remembering to take medications can become increasingly difficult with age. Caregivers, healthcare professionals and automated systems can help ensure that Shannon Schultz medications are administered on time, in Nebraska LTC Pharmacy the right dosage and as prescribed. This not only supports the individual's physical well-being, but also helps manage their cognitive symptoms more effectively, contributing to a better overall quality of life and potentially slowing the progression of the memory loss condition. “From a pharmacy perspective, people struggling to remember to take their meds can be very detrimental to managing their health care, which can then further lead to not being allowed to remain in their home,” shared Shannon Schultz, Owner of Nebraska LTC Pharmacy. “Some people don’t have anyone there to ensure medication is taken routinely and properly – that’s where I can come in and help!” Nebraska LTC Pharmacy provides free weekly blister packaging and delivery – something they have found to be much more manageable for someone who may be forgetting or feeling overwhelmed with multiple prescription bottles sitting around. They don’t have to worry about which ones they need to take at which times of day, as that is all in the blister packs. This also removes the possibility of doubledosing or taking meds they aren’t supposed to be taken anymore. Nail Down Next Steps Early Planning funeral arrangements in advance is a crucial step for individuals diagnosed with dementia. to participate and make decisions. This proactive approach allows the person with dementia to express their wishes regarding their funeral and burial, ensuring that their preferences are respected, relieving their loved ones of the emotional burden of making these decisions during a difficult time. Pre-planning provides peace of mind to both the individual and their family, and it can be a loving and considerate way to honor the person’s wishes when the time comes. When approaching the difficult conversation, Wyuka Funeral Home & Cemetery recommends being open-minded. It’s important to have empathy as you navigate the conversation. Try to understand their sensitivity and perspective, and provide support and reassurance frequently. The goal is to get a plan decided upon, and doesn’t have to come at the expense of the comfort of those involved. There’s no need to ‘schedule’ a conversation to avoid upsetting those involved. It’s okay to be subtle and create an ongoing conversation on the topic of prearrangements. Honor ALL WHO

SERVED Veterans Day November 11, 2023 The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them

our lasting gratitude.

V

eterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, has its origins in the end of World War I. On November 11, 1918, an armistice was signed between the Allied powers and Germany, effectively ending World War I. The armistice went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, marking a significant moment of peace and the end of a devastating conflict. In 1919, one year after the armistice, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day, with the intention of honoring the soldiers who had served in World War I. Armistice Day became an official holiday in the United States in 1938. However, after World War II and the Korean War, it became evident that a broader celebration was needed to honor Veterans from all U.S. military conflicts. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill officially changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Since then, Veterans Day has continued to be observed on November 11th each year. It is a day to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of all American Veterans, living and deceased, who have bravely defended the nation in times of war and peace. At Strictly Business, we believe it is not only important to honor the military men and women who have given their lives to defend our country, but also the Veterans who were able to return home. This Veterans Day, take the time to thank a Veteran in your life, whether they’re a business owner, family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor or even a stranger in uniform who you pass on the street. Please join us in extending our tremendous gratitude to these heroes among us, and do business with the businesses that make it a priority to support the past, present and future members of our military. Join us in supporting the local businesses that support our Veterans!
