I hope you all had a fabulous bank holiday weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The history of a ceremony such as this was fascinating, and I wish both the King and Queen an extremely successful reign. Last Friday the Reception children drew excellent portraits of King Charles III and I have included a few of the portraits below.

This week 2J visited Edward the Confessor, as part of their work for Musical Connections. Musical Connections run participatory music sessions and projects for older, isolated, and vulnerable people in care and community settings across York. It has been hugely rewarding to witness the impact these visits from Year 2 have had on the residents over the past three weeks. They really have benefitted from some social interaction with a younger generation who were full of fun, smiles, lively conversation and enthusiastic singing. Well done to all of 2J, you really impressed Mrs Hayden and Miss Jeffrey. My thanks to all of Year 2 for representing St Peter’s so well with this community project.

We held our final class assemblies of the term this week. Over the past few weeks, I have been extremely impressed with Year 3, Year 2 and Year 1 who have performed brilliantly in their class assemblies. On Thursday morning Reception had their turn to shine in front of parents, grandparents, siblings and friends. All of the children delivered their lines with such confidence in front of a large audience. One class described the life cycle of a butterfly, another provided instructions of how to create a fruit salad, interspersed with several very funny jokes. The final class
described parts of a plant explaining how they grow and what they need to grow most effectively. The assemblies involved parent volunteers who made fruit salad, answered very tough questions and were taught how to draw plants. Finally, all three classes sang two songs beautifully as a fitting finale to a wonderful assembly. A huge well done to all of the children, teachers and teaching assistants for preparing the children, it was such a fabulous start to a Thursday morning.
Miss Jeffrey who teaches in Year 2 will be leaving us at the end of the summer term. We have been fortunate to have had six years with Miss Jeffrey who has taught across Year 1 and Year 2 since she joined us in 2017. She leaves us to pursue a career overseas where she has been successful in her application to become a teacher at Deira International School in Dubai. This is an exciting opportunity, and I am sure Miss Jeffrey will be a huge success in her new role in September. We have been actively recruiting teaching staff to replace both Miss Jeffrey and Miss Murray and we are holding interviews on Tuesday next week and the following Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Obviously, I will report to the school community when I have further updates.
On Monday we have a whole school photograph planned for St Peter’s 2-8. These photographs are taken every three years and record the children who attended the school at this point in time. All children are invited to attend, and we anticipate the photograph will be taken at 9.45am (approx.) on the cricket pitch to the left of pikes path. As it can take a while to place all children into position could I please ask that children arrive
promptly on Monday morning as they will be leaving their classes for the photograph shortly after morning registration.

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week, the theme this year is anxiety. Anxiety is a normal emotion in us all, but sometimes it can get out of control and become a mental health problem.

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems we can face. In a recent study, a quarter of adults said they felt so anxious that it stopped them from doing the things they want to do some or all of the time. Six in ten adults feel this way, at least some of the time. On a positive note, anxiety can be made easier to manage.

Focusing on anxiety for this year's Mental Health Awareness Week will increase people's awareness and understanding of anxiety by providing information on the things that can help prevent it from becoming a problem.
On Sunday I am looking forward to coming into school to join the Friends of St Peter’s 2-8, who are hosting a welcome event for the Reception cohort 2023/24. This will be held in the Dining Hall and on the outside playgrounds. We are expecting in the region of 100 parents/ children, and I look forward to welcoming those who are able to join us.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

OUR HOUSE CAPTAINS FOR THIS TERM
Hi, my name is Novem. I am 8 years old. I like playing football and I support Manchester City. I also like doing Art, Math and Piano. My biggest goal is to win the Ballon d’Or. In my house I have two cats, mum and dad and me.

To be selected as a House Captain I am very proud and I will be very kind and will help each other. I will try my best to be a good Captain!

My name is Rosamund. I am nearly eight years old. I live with my mummy, my daddy and my little brother Nico, in York.
My hobbies are crafting, swimming, gymnastics, acting and learning.
Hello Walmgate, My name is Matilda and I am really happy to have been chosen to be your house captain. I have been at 2-8 right from the start in Nursery and I think it is the best school in the world and we are all lucky to be here.

I have one brother in J3 called Sam and two dogs called Harry and Mabel. My hobbies include gymnastics, swimming and fixing old cars with my daddy.
As house captain I would like to achieve
1. Keep everyone happy and make sure new members of Walmgate feel welcome.

2. Help people try new things.
3. Lift the winning trophy on Sports Day.
Ahead of sports day, the Year 2 and 3 children have been developing their high jump and long jump skills.

We have learnt various techniques to help move our bodies further across a distance. Through exploration, the children have mastered the most efficient technique for both jumps.
High jump is a complex movement and requires some intimidating equipment, the children were resilient and attacked the high jump head on. Using the scissor kick method, all classes were able to obtain strong results with many being new school records! As a consequence of all this hard work, the crash mat was often used for a quick relax before the next attempt.
Well done for working hard this week Year 2 and Year 3, and we look forward to sharing the results of these events on sports day.

Music
2J Musical Connections

It was such a pleasure to take 2J to meet the Honeysuckle Singers on Wednesday as part of the Musical Connections project.

They very quickly settled into the session and happily spoke to the members of the group with confidence and lots of smiles! It really didn't take much time before the conversations became animated and it was so lovely to see the older members of our community engaging with our pupils. Everyone enjoyed some balloon drumming and playing with the parachute, as well as singing lots of different songs, one in 4 parts!

Well done 2J for bringing so much joy to the Honeysuckle Singers! As were leaving everyone said how quiet next week's session would be without Year 2 there to spread their joy. Well done to all of our Year 2 children, you were true ambassadors for our school. I am so proud of how you all behaved, impeccable manners at all times, lovely conversations and you all demonstrated our school values. Abby (the session leader) asked me to tell you that you are welcome back anytime!

Acorns
This week the Acorns have loved being outside in the sunshine. We have dodged some rain showers too!

During Forest school, the Acorns have been biologists searching for bug life under logs and crawling on branches. We have been busy making dens and hiding away from the Big Bad Wolf!

The swings at forest school are always a favourite.
Whilst playing outside, the Acorns have enjoyed using the big chalks to do some mark making on the ground. They drew around each other's bodies to see what shapes they could make. We have been building Lego aeroplanes and towers out in the sunshine.
It has been another happy week!

Conkers
It's been a rolling down hills, baking banana bread, playing duck duck goose, creating dream catchers, planting sunflower seeds, making our own fresh orange juice, and lots of mouth gym kind of a week!

Reception

What a super week we have had with the children all working so hard to bring together their amazing Reception Assembly Showcase at the end of the week. We were so proud of the learning superhero characteristics they all displayed; showing resilience ( and a big dose of bravery) as they performed in front of a large audience, all remembering their lines and songs and actions despite being the tender age of 4 or 5 years old; reflecting on their learning from the past few weeks and of course showing amazing collaborative skills as they worked as a team to put on a brilliant show! A huge thank you to all the parent volunteers and audience participation, you made it such a fun experience for all.

Of course Reception has, as always, been a hive of activity, our class caterpillars are causing lots of excitement particularly as some have now turned into cocoons and the children have been busy planting outside in our mini allotment caring for the plants as well as watching changes to the tadpoles in the pond and honing our clay, woodwork and drawing skills in our 'focus skills' sessions.

In our maths learning we have been exploring songs, stories and activities which support our learning on addition and in phonics the children have been learning to read and write a range of phase 4 words as well as developing their descriptive writing through the provocation of a curious picture every day!

We cannot believe that we have already come to the end of our final week in Ghana! What a busy few weeks it has been discovering facts about Ghana and the wonderful story about the national hero, Emanuel Ofosu Yeboah.

Throughout the week, the Year One have been exploring repeating patterns using traditional Ghanaian wooden stamps linked to emotions and feelings.

As we spent the previous few weeks learning about multiplication and counting repeating groups of the same amount, the children have had a very tasty and fun maths week as they applied all this new knowledge to investigate creating arrays and to solve problems! Maths is always fun when it is practical and delicious! The engagement, motivation and excitement from the children was just incredible!
Alongside this, we have returned to school after celebrating the King's Coronation on the long weekend. It has been wonderful to see all the different ways in which our families celebtarted the occasion! We have spent a great amount of time writing about this celebration, ensuring that we try to use more than one adjective (split with a comma) to describe the nouns! We have seen some wonderful descriptive writing that truly marks this special celebration!
Next week we will be reading another key text ... key your eyes peeled!

What another busy week we have had travelling around Paris!
This week we have visited Montmartre and explored the amazing artists who set up stalls here! Inspired by the famous silhouette starts, the children created their own silhouettes using side profile photographs and carefully cutting around their faces to show their delicate features!

In literacy this week we have been researching and writing facts about key landmarks around Paris and then used green screen technology to create travel videos for Paris- Ooh la-la!
In maths we have been exploring fractions of shape and investigating dividing shapes into halves, quarters and thirds! We all made a delicious croque monsieur which we used to divide and cut equally into fractions!
Following this we went on to discover that fractions are just the same as division! We quickly saw the link between knowing our times tables and division which really helps us when we need to work out a fraction of a number! ¼ of 16 is 4, which is the same as 16 16 ÷ 4 = 4!
On Wednesday 2J had their visit to Musical Connections and had a brilliant morning singing and getting to know some of the lovely people from the community! A big thank you to Mrs Hayden for organising these visits for us!
We can't wait to make our next stop-off for The Travelling School...India! So, if you would like to share any Indian connections, we would love to hear about them or feel free to bring in any items you would like to share! See you all at the Taj Mahal!

YearThree
As you all know, last week we spent Thursday and Friday at Newby Wiske Hall on our residential.
What an exciting time we had on the zip wire, sensory trail, playing aeroball, practising our survival skills and challenging ourselves on the assault course! We had a thoroughly wonderful time sharing rooms and sleeping over with our friends, and not to mention eating lots of scrumptious food!
This week we revisited our trip and created Pie Corbett style story maps, based on our adventures. We then looked closely at recount writing and the features of a good recount. We used connectives to join sentences to make them more exciting and looked at applying adventurous vocabulary to help bring our writing to life.
Alongside this, we picked up where we left off with our core text and followed Mo and his friends into the hall ready for the big sleepover. We learnt about Egyptian hieroglyphs and made our own papyrus bookmarks with our names drawn in hieroglyphics.
We also completed our Lowry inspired artwork that we started last week, adding finger painted characters and sticking them down focusing of perspectives.

In Maths we moved onto identifying and recalling the properties of 3D shapes.

Phew! It has certainly been a busy 4 days in Year 3!
