Today, the whole school dressed in red, white and blue in honour of King Charles III’s coronation. This historic occasion was marked by a Coronation picnic prepared by the chefs at school and included coronation chicken sandwiches and King Charles’ Coronation quiche. Shortly before lunch Beatrix and Arthur from Year 2 helped to plant an oak tree on the school grounds. They were also joined by Hannah and Alexander from St Peter’s 8-13 and Toby, Martha and Beth from St Peter’s 13-18 (coincidentally all pupils involved in the tree planting were pupils who had all attended St Peter’s 2-8). This short film describes the Coronation of King Charles III to a younger audience. I hope you all enjoy watching the Coronation tomorrow morning and make the most of the Bank Holiday weekend.

In assembly on Monday Mrs Hayden led the school singing the Coronation song ‘Sing for the King. It was also great to present School Council badges with Mrs Franey and award the House captain badges to our new House Captains Rosamund Goldie, Matilda Nellist and Novem Li.

On Thursday our Year 3 children went on their much anticipated residential visit to Newby Wiske Hall near Thirsk. They have thoroughly enjoyed the many activities on offer including, climbing, zipwire, survival, aeroball to name a few. However, I always feel the most valuable part of a trip

such as this is the opportunity to spend time away from home and school with friends in the year group and gain a little independence. Children often return will a newfound confidence that may not have been so apparent before they left. I know they have all returned with huge smiles on their faces, and judging from the excitable conversation I have just overheard it is clear they have had a wonderful time. I am sure they will sleep well tonight. My huge thanks to Miss Murray, Miss Collins, Mrs Salisbury, Mrs Hayden, Ms Dodds, Mr Lomax and Mr Maycock for giving up their time and supporting the children over the past two days. I have no doubt they have also returned a little tried and they too will sleep well this evening!

On Wednesday, there was a St Peter’s 2-8 friends meeting and it was great to reflect on the events that the group had organised so far this academic year. It was also an opportunity to discuss plans for events in the near future for both parents and for children. The two main events are the Charity Ball and Cliffest which I am very much looking forward to. My huge thanks to the Friends of 2-8 who have organised leaver’s hoodies for the Year 3 children, many of whom have enjoyed wearing these on their residential (particular thanks must go to Mrs Dryden for organising these). The Friends have also contributed to the purchase of balance bikes for Nursery and Reception, and they are providing House T-shirts for sports days and all inter house sporting events plus a donation towards some new playground equipment.

The Friends work incredibly hard and everyone is welcome to become part of the group, look out for dates of future meetings in the newsletter if you would like to attend. The Friends are also hosting a

parents and children get together for the Reception cohort 2023/24 on Sunday 14th May (24pm), further details are included later in the newsletter.

On Wednesday 2P visited Edward the Confessor as part of their work for Musical connections. Musical Connections run participatory music sessions and projects for older, isolated, and vulnerable people in care and community settings across York. This is such a special charity for the children to engage with. It was great to hear how brilliant the children were, singing beautifully and having animated conversations with the residents. Well done to all of 2P, Mrs Morrison, (who has been covering for Miss Platts this week while she recovers from a bug), Mrs Brunton and Mrs Hayden for organising the trip.

Following the devastating earthquakes that hit Syria, at the beginning of February, Edward, Elizabeth, Raif, Luna, Teddy and James from St Peter 2-8 and 8-13 held a sponsored sleep out (supported by their grown -ups) on 22nd April in aid of the DEC Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal. The event coincided with National Sovereignty and Children’s Day. Well done to all involved this is a fabulous initiative.

Our friends and neighbours at York Cricket Club invite any budding cricketers to join them at Cricket Allstars and further details can be found with the following link York Cricket Club Allstars

Just a reminder that due to the bank holiday weekend there is no swimming for Reception tomorrow morning. Have a lovely coronation weekend.

Notice Board Notice Board SCHOOL COUNCIL

The new School Council met for the first time on Monday, it was great to see all of them fired up to help make our school and the world around us a better place. The children have been voted into the Council by their peers in their classes to be the class voice for this term. The representatives are -

1A Ted & Emilia

1E Ivy & Alex

1C Kalan & Poppy

2H Hugo & Tilly

2P Melanie & Hugh

2J India & Oliver

3C Caleb & Drishya

3M Hugo & Martha

3S Sam & Mathilda

Mr Hardy awarded the group their badges in assembly and visited our first meeting. We are looking forward to an exciting term!

Notice Board SCHOOL COUNCIL

School council worked hard today in 2-8 dining room and also in the dining room at 13-18 to help educate the children on our new bins and vegeware. Waste food and vegeware are sent from school in a large green bin by York Council to be turned into compost. The children also showed pupils at both schools how to use the other recycling bins in the dining room correctly. This process is obviously much more eco friendly and better for our planet. Well done School Council, I was VERY proud of you, Mrs Franey

PE

Reception this week have looked very closely at two footed jumps apart and together. Spot markers were used to create a pathway, which the children had to detect if it was a two footed jump together or apart. The children realised quickly that they needed to swing their arms forward and bend their knees in order to reach the next spot marker successfully. The children then had a go at the sack race, where they displayed fantastic resilience to complete the race.

During Games Reception’s focus is team challenge. This week the children were put into pairs to create an obstacle course out of spot markers, hurdles, hula hoops and cones. The children had to direct one another through the obstacle course thinking carefully about their clear instructions. It was fantastic to see the children’s imagination shine out in this activity.

I hope you and your family have a lovely long weekend, celebrating the King’s Coronation.

MUSIC

2P Musical Connections

It was such a pleasure to take 2P to meet the Honeysuckle Singers on Wednesday as part of the Musical Connections project.

They very quickly settled into the session and happily spoke to the members of the group with confidence and lots of smiles! The conversations quickly became animated and it was so lovely to see the older members of our community engaging with our pupils.

Everyone enjoyed some balloon drumming and playing with the parachute, as well as singing lots of different songs!

Well done 2P for bringing so much joy to the Honeysuckle Singers!

Concerts Dates for May

Year 1 - on Monday 22nd May at 2pm we will be holding a concert for parents. All Year 1 children will be taking part either singing or playing their recorder if they have lessons with Ms Leaman-Brown. For our instrumentalists it will be their very first concert performing in front of an audience so I am sure the children will be very excited. We look forward to welcoming you into school!

Year 2 - on Tuesday 23rd May at 1.30pm we will be holding a concert for our Year 2 instrumentalists. If your child has instrumental lessons in school and you would like them to perform in the concert, please can you email me a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk so I can pop them on my list?

Our choir will also be performing at this concert too and we are very much looking forward to welcoming you into school.

Year 3 - on Wednesday 24th May at 1.30pm we will be holding a concert for our Year 3 instrumentalists. If your child has instrumental lessons in school and you would like them to perform in the concert, please can you email me a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk so I can pop them on my list?

Our choir will also be performing at this concert too and we are very much looking forward to welcoming you into school.

Acorns

One of the Acorns came into school this week and said, "It's the Coronation, the King will have a crown!" It brought a great big smile to our faces. Indeed, Charles III will be crowned and we in Acorns would have celebrated accordingly! We began this week by using our rolling skills to roll delicious, condensed milk and coconut balls. We coloured the coconut blue and popped a cherry onto the top. The children have decorated biscuits with coloured sprinkles and made fruit skewers the colour of the Union Jack. We have told the Acorns how much King Charles enjoys the outdoors and has a passion for conservation. We thought it fitting for each child to plant an apple seed to commemorate this historic occasion. We do hope that each tree will grow and be able to be planted in your gardens! We sat beneath an apple tree and the Acorns each had a turn to plant their own seed. We are looking forward to our Royal Party today and the whole school picnic on Friday. Enjoy the extended weekend with all the festivities.

CONKERS

Celebrations for the Coronation have been in full swing this week in Conkers........... we even had our snack with our late Queen Elizabeth II at the Minster!

We hope you all have a lovely long weekend full of flag waving, cream teas and toasting the new King!

CONKERS CoronationPicnic

Reception

This week in Reception we have been learning all about King Charles’ coronation.

We have looked at the Royal family and castles, made our own crowns and bunting as well as drawing portraits of the king.

Finally on Friday we celebrated with a picnic lunch and a party with royal fun and games.

On top of all that we have been busy preparing our assembly ready for next week.

Outside we have been keeping an eye on the progress of our resident tadpoles, planting flowers and vegetables and have welcomed the arrival of some new fuzzy caterpillars that are doubling in size each day!

Phew – what a busy week!

Enjoy the bank holiday weekend.

Reception

This week we have had a wonderful week of fun as we delve deeper into our key text, 'Emmanuels Dream'.

The children have been so inspired by his story and it has been wonderful to see them recreating his cycling route in the construction area of provision.

The children have also been fabulous artists and have been drawing African animals to scale using a range of mediums such as watercolor, pencil and oil pastel. They are phenomenal!

We have also been looking at whole, half and quarter at snack time as we serve our friends and chop up our fruit - delicious!

On Friday, we look forward to celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III with a whole school picnic and wearing red, white and blue. We will also be making royal crowns in provision, so we are dressed for the occasion.

We hope you all have a wonderful long weekend, and we are looking forward to seeing you all next week!

Week 2 started with a mystery....

Year 2 learnt all about the theft of the famous Mona Lisa, by Leonardo da Vinci, from The Louvre Museum in Paris. The portrait is known for the sitter's enigmatic smile and the way that her eyes follow you around the room..! The theft took place in 1911 and Year 2 had an exciting time acting out the various roles in the drama, hot-seating the characters, in order to gather ideas to write a newspaper report of the crime!

Report writing is very hard and we have been working at building stamina for writing- pop in and read our reports!

It has been all about Art this week as we then moved on to learning about Monet and his Impressionistic style of painting. The children painted their own water lily pictures and enjoyed being abstract, rather than realistic.

In maths we have continued our work on money, using the cafes to buy treats and making our own menus.

2P visited the Honeysuckle Choir, as part of our work with Musical Connections and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Next week it is the turn of 2J to bring joy!

As we write this we are getting ready to make our own crowns, in order to celebrate the new King's Coronation on Saturday.

We all wish children and parents a happy, extended weekend!

Year3

It has been an exciting first week of the Summer term in Year 3!

Our new text ‘The Ancient Egypt Sleepover’ by Stephen Davies is all about a young boy called Mo who has arrived at the British Museum for an exciting sleep over. This week has been all about London, the setting of our story. We have been exploring its famous landmarks, the geography of the city and finding out exciting facts. We have used coordinates to map read and find locations, as well as honing our artistic skills with sketches and ink drawings.

Things are really starting to hot up in the story and we can’t wait to pursue the adventure further with Mo next week!

In maths we have been refreshing our knowledge of telling the time. We have been reading and drawing times to specific minutes and used the small clocks to support our learning.

We will continue to explore time next week, focussing on AM/PM and the 24hr clock. We are also very excited to be heading off on our residential trip next Thursday to Newby Wiske Hall. Stay tuned to read all about it!

Year3

Y3LeaversHoodies

Year 3 were delighted to receive their hoodies this week. It has become an annual tradition that the Friends of St Peter’s give each child their hoodie as a gift when they leave 2-8 and it was the perfect time, ready for their residential trip!

Our thanks go to all Y3 parents, carers and children for supporting FOSP events over the years, it is much appreciated. We wish all the children well as they move on to 8-13. Thanks also to Harriet Dryden and Lou Parrillo for organising the bespoke hoodies for the children, they look great!
