CHAPTER SIX 2

COMMODORE’S LOG D

ear SPYC Members, Spring is here, along with longer days and more afternoon sailing time. This is usually our best and most consistent time of year for reliable breeze. As you read this, the NOOD Regatta is underway. The parties may not be what we like, but we are very happy to have participants from far and wide traveling here for the racing. Hundreds of sailors will be on Tampa Bay. It is only because of our great staff and member-volunteers that we are able to host such a large regatta. We look forward to hosting more of these big events in the near future. More vaccinated members are returning to Club activities, but we can’t let down our guard. Our members expect us to put safety first. It has worked well thus far to reduce the risk of disease spread. We look forward to pulling back on some of our safety protocols when we are certain that conditions are favorable to do so. I would like to thank our Covid Control Committee for their continued service and guidance. Our membership numbers are great. We are welcoming many more new Club members. It is good to see new faces around the Club and, of course, we appreciate our long-time members too. I am very happy to announce that we have been able to bring breakfast back. We are thrilled to have our members join us again for the morning meal. Also, don’t forget to enjoy our Pass-a-Grille Beach Club. Our staff continues to do a wonderful job keeping new and old members happy at all our facilities.

• April 21st join us at the downtown Clubhouse for a postpresentation of the 36th America’s Cup with - Tucker Thompson - the America’s Cup Commentator. • Top off the month with Dinner and Dancing on Friday, April 30th with the Southshore Cruisers band, playing the greatest hits from the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s. • Mother’s Day is next month. Bring mom and celebrate at the Club, full details on page 13. Congratulations go out to SPYC member, Donna Sue Marks, who has received the Virginia Long Sail Training Service and Support Award. This award honors individuals who, through their efforts, unselfishly assist and enable a sailing program or sailing instruction in a supportive role. Recipients of this annual award are those whose outstanding efforts enable and support excellence and safety in sailing instruction and/or programs, but do not necessarily teach themselves. Donna Sue is one of America’s most accomplished and sought-after PROs for foil kiteboard and windsurf regattas. Please join me in congratulating her on this well deserved recognition. Don’t be an April fool. Go sailing this month! Respectfully,

David Mendelblatt, Commodore

ON SPYC THEHISTORY WATER 5

How many of you have noticed the beautiful double helm wheels in the Compass Room while loading up on the buffet or choosing dessert and were curious to know what it represented? The mystery is being revealed. Please read on! * * * This version of the USS Constitution’s original double helm wheel was conceived, designed and built by a team of SPYC members during the summer of 1998 in the shop of Captain Dave Shreve with the assistance of Fred Corbishley, PC Bruce Watters (donated the brass plaques and plates); and John Hanner (donated the helm wheels). The wheel made its grand entrance August 12, 1998. The double wheel is host to an old ship’s compass [another donation from John Hanner] and two plaques—one explaining the history of the USS Constitution and the other describes the group created around the wheel known as the Wheel Club. “The Wheel Club was a program established to enable the funding of capital improvement projects through Gifts, Endowments, and Memorials.” The contributions were held in a special account to manage these donations known as the GEM Fund. Membership entry into the Wheel Club was acquired with a $1,000 contribution with each member receiving a special lapel pin and engraved brass plate added to the wheel. Because the program was ongoing, a Red Stone representing a Ruby was attached to the name plates when $2,500 was attained; at the $5,000 or more level, a Stone representing a Diamond was attached. Projects funded by the Wheel Club include the refurbishment of the lovely Quarterdeck Room, replacement chairs for the lounge, and new entrance to the Commodores Room. The founding members of the GEM Fund committee were PC Pat Seidenspinner, Treasurer; John Hanner, Chairman; PC Tom Allison; Ken Cowan; Carole Bardes; Ibbie Jones; Lon Seay; PC Don Krippendorf; Larry Growney and Delton Cunningham. The GEM Wheel is used on many occasions to dress up festivities and allows for great “Kodak Moments!”

* * * MANY THANKS to all SPYC Members who so generously donated to this Fund! And Special thanks to John & Ginger Hanner for another significant donation to the Club! Submitted by: Trisha Birkenstock Information obtained from SPYC Archives & Hearsay SMOOTH SAILING | APRIL 2021

U

S Sailing has an expectation of a few of the US Sailing Adult and Youth Championships happening this summer in and around the country. Please continue to check the US Sailing event website for updates throughout the year. The following Youth Championships planned include a brief description and some of our SPYC past winners at those Championships. The US Youth Match Racing Championship, in June at Rochester YC (Rochester, NY) is a resume submission event with a deadline fast approaching. This event is an outstanding training ground for young sailors who are passionate about match racing and focused on competing at the next level. S PYC hosted this event in 2012. The Chubb US Junior Championships for junior sailors ages 13-18, is in August at Eastern Yacht Club - Marblehead, MA. The Championship is comprised of three fleets; single, double, and triple handed. The Area D Qualifier for this event is June 24th-26th hosted by Fairhope YC, Alabama. Several sailors from SPYC have won these national championships and various sportsmanship awards.

The Smythe Singlehanded Trophy has been won by Nic Baird 2013, Addison Hackstaff 2012 and Richard Merriman 1978. The Sears Trophy which is a triple and sometimes quadruple handed boat has seen SPYC winners as well; Liam McCarthy, Josh Dochoda and Greiner Hobbs in 2014, Rick Korab, Ryan Druyor and Kevin Reali 2000, Sean Doyle, Nick Hartney and Andrew Nelson 1997, Royce Rarik, Marty Kullman, Michelle Profant, and Chris Bardes 1985. The Cox Sportsmanship Award at this event was awarded to Liam McCarthy, Noah Blacker, Nevin Avila, and Emily Wright 2013. The Bemis Trophy was awarded to Commodore David Mendelblatt and Caj Flynn in 1987 and again in 1981 and 1980 back-to-back years to Mike Funsch and Mark Shepard. The US Youth Championships is being held in October at Camp Sea Gull in Arapahoe, NC. This is where the top youth sailors from around the country will gather and compete in six high performance classes. Some of the past winners from SPYC include; JJ Smith won the Nacra 15 Fleet in 2019, Nic Baird won the Radial Fleet in 2015, John Wallace won the Laser Fleet in 2010 and Chris Vetter and Kelsee Connon won the 29er Fleet in 2006. Congratulations to our previous winners and to our future SPYC Champions!

US Coast Guard Announces New Law Requiring Use of Engine Cut-Off Switches Submitted by: Captain John C. Timmel FCYC Vice Commodore & Government Affairs Committee Chairman

T

he ECOS and ECOSL prevent runaway vessels and the threats they pose. The ECOSL attaches the vessel operator to a switch that shuts off the engine if the operator is displaced from the helm. The ECOSL is usually a lanyard style cord that attaches to an ECOS either in close proximity to the helm or on the outboard motor itself if the vessel is operated by a tiller. When enough tension is applied, the ECOSL disengages from the ECOS and the motor is automatically shut down. Wireless ECOS have recently been developed and are also approved for use. These devices use an electronic “fob” that is carried by the operator and senses when it is submerged in water, activating the ECOS and turning the engine off. Wireless devices are available on the aftermarket and are beginning to become available as manufacturer-installed options. Each year the Coast Guard receives reports of recreational vessel operators who fall or are suddenly and unexpectedly thrown out of their boat. These events have led to injuries and deaths. During these incidents the boat continues APRIL 2021 | SMOOTH SAILING

to operate with no one in control of the vessel, leaving the operator stranded in the water as the boat continues on course, or the boat begins to circle the person in the water eventually striking them, often with the propeller. These dangerous runaway vessel situations put the ejected operator, other users of the waterway, and marine law enforcement officers and other first responders in serious danger. Section 503 of the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2018 required manufacturers of covered recreational boats (less than 26 feet in length, with an engine capable of 115 lbs. of static thrust) to equip the vessel with an ECOS installed as of December 2019. Owners of recreational vessels produced after December 2019 are required to maintain the ECOS on their vessel in a serviceable condition. It is recommended that recreational vessel owners regularly check their existing ECOS system to ensure it works, following manufacturer’s instructions. (continued on next page)

ON THE WATER Section 8316 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2021 requires individuals operating covered recreational vessels (less than 26 feet in length, with an engine capable of 115 lbs. of static thrust; 3 HP or more) to use ECOS “links.” Using the ECOSL is required only when the primary helm is not within an enclosed cabin, and when the boat is operating on plane or above displacement speed. Common situations where ECOSL use would not be required include docking/trailering, trolling and operating in no-wake zones. The Coast Guard believes that the overwhelming majority of recreational vessels produced for decades have had an ECOS installed, so this new use requirement simply obligates recreational vessel operators to use critical safety equipment already present on their boat. Seven states currently have ECOS use laws for traditional recreational vessels, and 44 states have ECOS use laws for personal watercraft (PWC). Boaters are encouraged to check the U.S. Coast Guard website for additional information on this new use requirement and other safety regulations and recommendations: https://uscgboating.org/ recreational-boaters/engine-cut-off-switch-faq.php

SPYC Junior Sailing Update by Todd Fedyszyn

T

he SPYC Junior Sailing Team continues to keep busy attending as many events as possible around the state of Florida. With many Covid restrictions in place, there is a high demand for regatta’s and often times minimal spots available so just getting a spot on the entry list can be extremely tough.

After a 5 month delay the Florida HS sailing season finally got started on February 19th with the first South Points Regatta hosted at Ransom Everglades School in Miami. Nineteen teams were in attendance with SPYC sailors representing Shorecrest Prep put in a strong performance for the overall win.

Over the weekend of February 25th-28th, the SPYC Laser Team travelled to Miami to compete in the annual Laser Midwinters East Regatta. Eleven SPYC sailors competed in the highly competitive Laser Radial and 4.7 classes over the 4-day, ten race series. Guthrie Braun was our top finisher in the Laser Radial Fleet finishing in 5th place overall in the 90-boat fleet. Also qualifying for the Gold fleet were Ethan Danielson, Sidney Moyer and Kate Danielson. Also competing for SPYC were Emily Allen, Heidi Hicks, Trevor Hicks, Preston Weaver, Peyton Weaver, Dorothy Mendelblatt and Jack Carter.

Our Opti sailors have also continued competing locally around Tampa Bay, most recently at the Tampa Bay Opti Series event hosted by the Clearwater Community Sailing Center. Our SPYC Green Fleet sailors put in strong performance with Thomas Weidner, Dalton Cellemare and Ethan Cox finishing in 1st/2nd/4th overall.

Over the same weekend the SPYC Opti Team travelled to the Buccaneer Blast Regatta hosted by the Upper Keys Sailing Club in Key Largo. John Hartney was our top finisher in 30th place overall out of 160 Opti RWB sailors. Also competing were Rosie Simpson, Jan Mistak, Sophia Fuller, Jackson Lee, Bennett Lamb, Parker Connell, Anna Andert, Maija Andert, Finn Cox, Gloria Privis, Jad Aberdrabbo and Leah Abrams.

Also sailing in the green fleet were Cooper Lee, Zade Aberdrabbo, Reece Bizouarn and Scarlett Bizouarn. On the Opti RWB course John Hartney took the overall win followed by Ryder Ellis in 3rd, Jan Mistak in 4th, Adam Mendelblatt in 6th, Reid Mendelblatt in 7th and Chris Shaffer in 8th. Also competing in the RWB were Sophia Fuller, Anna Andert, Maija Andert, Finn Cox, Jad Aberdrabbo, Bennett Lamb, Gloria Privis, Parker Connell and Leah Abrams.

Welcome Aboard!!! …

C

ruising Season 2021 started off with a bang. We had two Monthly meetings and a Cruise to SPYC to accommodate our annual Coast Guard Vessel Safety Checks. The monthly meetings saw a very great turnout with 40 plus attendees each meeting. The February meeting included a very informative presentation by Connie Beckman Commodore of the US Power Squadron now changing their name to America’s Boating Club and Al Lima the Club’s First Lieutenant.

Saturday started off with the Walking Mural Tour downtown which highlighted the many murals St. Petersburg has become famous for.

The Cruise to SPYC consisted of 15 boats and several Iron Dinghy participants. Our Port Directors, Susan & Kevin Cross, once again organized an exciting event with the Cruise-In theme of “Exploring our Home Port”. It consisted of a dinner at SPYC, Walking Mural Tour downtown and the St Pete Boat Show.

Finally we ended the day with the St. Pete Boat Show, some water activities, and a relaxing night aboard.

Port Directors

Friday’s Dinner was attended by 50 Cruisers with our quest speaker Vice Commodore Bill Waters updating the Fleet on current SPYC initiatives. We also through in a trivia contest on the new St Pete Pier. The winning table scored an impressive 8 out of 10 and earned gift cards for the Pier Point Restaurant.

fter cancelling both of their international conventions last year (due to COVID), the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) held their 102nd International Convention and RV Expo in March at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter (Perry Georgia). FMCA’s “Another Day in Perrydise” proved just that…What an event! We had the opportunity to attend (our first time), and really enjoyed all the enthusiasm of fellow RVers and a sense of things getting back to some normalcy. Many rules and protocols were enlisted to ensure a safe environment and lay the groundwork for future events. Perhaps others will consider joining in at the 103rd event in Gillette and discover “The Spirit of Wyoming” July 7-10, 2021.

Rallying at the Expo

Meanwhile, a little closer to home, here a couple of events worth considering: •April 6 – RV Land Cruisers meeting – an informal gathering at the Club (5:00 pm) •April 8-11 – Spring Fling at Oak Alley RV Resort in Webster •June 21-28 – FCYC Land Cruising Fleet RV Rally, River Ranch RV Resort (near Lake Wales) It will be fun to get together, and later on to meet up with fellow FCYC members who also RV! There’s so much to see and do, so let’s take the journey! Future Meetings - Downtown Clubhouse: Tuesday, May 4th - 5:00 pm We will not be having meetings in June, July or August.

FMCA Expo - Perry, Georgia

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AROUND THE NEXT BEND...

he Golf Group ended the month of February with a perfect day of sunny skies and winning shots at Bardmoor Golf Club. The beer and pizza party on the outside patio was coupled with teams reliving antics and stellar shots. A little glitch was that Connie’s car died and had to meet roadside assistance. She opted not to drive her golf cart home. Susan left her wallet behind and had to retrieve it, fortunately, the next day. We had to sadly postpone our annual Member/ Guest tournament until next year but then it will be indeed a much anticipated event! In March we met up at the Eagles Golf Club in Odessa. The tournament “scouts” told us that it is full of interesting wildlife and a beautiful venue, and indeed it was. The results of this outing will post next month.

Winners at Bardmoor Golf Club on February 26th: .1st Place -2 Tom Ritschell, John Arsenault, Barbara Deininger, Jack Howard .2nd Place +2 Bill Protz, Chuck Mudd, Connie Smith, Neal Crosson .3rd Place +4 Jim Krause, Jack Phyel, Karen Lieberman, Larry Massingil .Closest to the Pins on Par 3’s - John Arsenault, Guy Anderson, Becky Crosson, Tom Ritschel .Closest to the Line: Bill Casey As the weather is warming up, don’t hesitate to try out the Golf Group!! We welcome all levels of players for our monthly scramble outings. Contact Susan Arsenault at sueatcp@aol.com to sign up or obtain more information.

Road, where a left had us heading west to Paterson Road, where another left looped us back to the southeast to Race Track Road and back to Boy Scout Road. This time, we stayed on Race Track Road to Tarpon Springs Road. Another left on Tarpon Springs Road, which soon became Keystone Road had us heading west toward Tarpon Springs. Once in Tarpon Springs we headed south on US RT 19 ALT to Palm Harbor. A right on Tampa Road and another right on Orange Street brought us to The Ozone Pig, where we had a very enjoyable lunch.

n one of our recent rides, we decided to take a route which kept us mostly in northern Pinellas County. From our meeting spot at the Cracker Barrell parking lot on 54th Ave, we headed west to 49th N, then north to the Bayside Bridge. The Bayside Bridge took us to McMullen Booth Road where we continued north to SR 580, then east on SR 580 to northeast on Forest Lakes Road.

After lunch we backtracked to US RT 19 ALT, which we took south back to St. Petersburg. We have a 4 - day ride to the Florida Keys coming up later in the month. I will have a report on that ride in the next newsletter. Now that the weather has warmed up, the riding should be very comfortable the next couple of months before it gets too hot.

Next came a left on Race Track Road to the south edge of Lake Rogers Park. Here we made another left on Boy Scout Road, then a quick right on Crawley Road, which took us north along the western edge of Lake Rogers Park. We continued along beautiful countryside to Tarpon Springs

pring is a time when women’s sailing clubs on Florida’s west coast typically focus on honing their racing skills, in preparation for the Florida Women’s Sailing Association’s Rainbow Regatta, held each spring. While concerns about Covid led to postponement of this year’s regatta, sailors selected for the Broad Reachers’ Rainbow team nonetheless decided Spring is a good time to refresh and work on skills. We are fortunate to have coaches J.P. Creignou and Charlie LaLanne available to help. Together with sailors from the Salty Sisters Rainbow team, the Broad Reacher team has been participating in coaching sessions both on shore and on the water. While different sailboats, large and small, have differences in their rigging, key aspects of the art of rigging and trim are

The trip was arranged by Ed Wilson and his son Kent; aka Lightning and Bourbon. Our group enjoyed well appointed cabins housing 4 or 6 guests and the finest southern hospitality. On arrival the first afternoon a round of warmup shooting on the sporting clays course preceded the first evening meal. Guided hunts with well trained pointers and flushers were offered the following two mornings and that first afternoon. The day included full a southern breakfast, lunch and supper. universal, such as achieving optimum sail shape for one’s boat in various conditions, knowing how best to power up and power down to meet conditions, and adjusting for upwind and downwind legs. The team spent a morning on shore with Charlie and JP, going over every aspect of rigging and trimming an Opti. It then was time for on the water practice. On March 10, the team joined Salties at the St. Pete Sailing Center for various drills, practicing upwind and downwind techniques, windward and leeward mark roundings, start/ stop drills, and racing starts, followed by short races. We are practicing those drills during our Saturday morning sails at Pass-a-Grille, and we invite all Broad Reachers, whether on or off the official Rainbow team, to join us. For more information about becoming a Broad Reacher, contact Carol Hansen at Carol@dband1.com.

At these events someone usually goes home with a nick name. Here’s that story. One guy showed up with the smallest of the small shotguns, a 410 gauge. These light weight guns are good for young shooters or the elderly since there’s not much of a kick. You might call the 410 a peashooter. However, it can also be the mark of an accomplished marksman because it affords no margin of error. That guy turned out to be a great shot with his peashooter. That Wing Shooter is Stephan Grossnickle, aka 410.

n February 20th, Captain Els Wiemken, Barbara Mehaffey, and Terri McGough, along with their Briny Brothers (John, Stan, & Maurice) assisted with the Adaptive Sailing Expo. As in previous years, it was a big success and a rewarding experience for those who volunteered. Our “Cruise Director” Katie Rodgers is planning a guided tour at the Gizella Kopsick Arboretum tentatively on April 13th. It specializes in palms and cycads and is run by St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation. This land cruise will be the first one in a long time. February 24th, Co-Captain Jennifer Parramore reported that 30 Salty Sisters and two coaches reported to the Sailing Center for the start of our spring Opti training season and general sailing. The wind was quite light, and the Prams did not launch. Rainbow Chair, Marti Cochran gathered the sailors who will be in the 2022 Rainbow Regatta teams for the Salties, as well as others who simply want to improve their Pram sailing skills. They were treated to a terrific demonstration on rigging, sail trim, and boat balance by our coaches J. P. Creignou and Charlie Lalanne. Twelve joined the coaching session and nine Salties sailed four Ideals and got in a bit of spinnaker practice. Unfortunately, all four Ideals were towed in, as the light wind got even lighter throughout the morning.
