Autumn is our favourite time of year for many reasons Saying goodbye to the lighter evenings is a small price to pay for woodland walks and open fires The colours of Autumn are also something to behold As we write this column, we’ve just experienced some tremendous storms, closely followed by glorious sunshine within literally five minutes of ending. It’s crazy weather for sure!
This month things have been really busy as we star t to think about the festive season ahead (it’s never too early!) We have some great features inside your October issue, with yet more new adver tisers to the publication for which we are ver y thankful.
Lastly, as the weather star ts to change and the darker evenings star t to draw in, we’d like to thank all of our deliver y volunteers for ensuring your magazines are getting through your letterboxes come rain or shine - we are truly blessed with the ver y best team of helpers
All that is left to do is wish you all a lovely October If you happen to be popping over to Stotfold and visiting the Mill event be sure to stop by and say hello!
We hope you enjoy your October edition!
Until next month!

We always love to hear from our readers. We are famously known for being useless in the garden (we can’t be good at ever y thing, right?) and so this had us in awe!
“A lot of plants have 'gone over' in this dr y weather, however I thought you might like to see the attached picture of my marigolds and zinnia”
“I grow them ever y year from my own seed, collected from the previous year's flowers.” “They had a poor star t this year as I set the seeds in seed trays, transferring them to the borders just as we went away for a month when the weather here was absolutely scorching ”
“Initially they had ver y little water to sur vive However with a little TLC on our return, I think you will agree, they have really blossomed!”Verna Bull
Thank you so much for sharing these with us Verna - they are absolutely stunning!

Every few months we were fortunate to grab some updates from CBC Cllr Jodie Chillery Below Jodie sum merises some of the key points she has been working on these last few weeks
Back in August I had a ver y productive morning with the Central Bedfordshire Council Rights of Way Officer We walked several miles, meeting joggers, dog walkers, families, and anglers along the way It was fantastic to see how well- used our Rights of Way are Unfor tunately, many routes this year have been difficult to access, with serious safety concerns, but that is now being addressed.
After literally years of complaining, finally I’m really pleased to be able to share that finally a new footbridge bridge over the Ear wig Ditch leading into Arlesey Common/ Horses field was delivered at the end of August making this section of footpath fully accessible for the first time in years!
Footpath 2a, which runs from the bridge along the back of Amenity Trees to the Mill Pitts has been neglected and got heavily overgrown and impassable in places It has now been cleared, and the rights of way team are making plans to ensure it doesn’t get as bad next year During inspection, we discovered the riverbank revetments behind the Amenity Trees are failing Contractors will repair these to prevent path erosion This will involve significant cutting back, but plants will recover by next spring Network Rail has also agreed to clear encroaching undergrowth on their land, repair the footbridge steps, and remove graffiti. Cala Homes has been contacted to tidy the connecting footpath from the High Street. This will create a continuous, usable walk from Arlesey High Street, across the railway, and along the river to the new bridge at the Common.
The larger bridge over the Hiz is in poor condition, with rotten suppor ts and soil erosion making access unsafe. It has been flagged as a high-priority safety issue. CBC officers have now assessed, and work to repair / replace it is likely in the next financial year I will be pushing for this!
I’m also ver y pleased to be able to share that we’ve secured CBC training places for ACORN volunteers in September, with more booked for April This will help maintain the paths year-round This work represents a huge improvement in Arlesey’s Rights of Way With new bridges, improved maintenance, and stronger community involvement, we’re finally getting the investment our area deser ves. I hope you all enjoy walking, running, and exploring the countr yside again.
Good news three new litter bins (possibly four) have now been installed along the relief road, just in time for the school year. These can also be used for dog waste.
Cllr Jodie Chillery.
We’re now well under way with our plans for Christmas! As we mentioned in last month’s edition of the Arlesey News magazine, we will be holding a Christmas Fair on Saturday November 29th, 3-6pm at Arlesey Village and WI Halls The Christmas Lights will be switched on at approximately 5 30pm
Remember, if you are interested in having a stall at the Christmas Fair or helping us with the setting up/clearing away please get in touch Booking forms are now available please contact us if you are interetsed
Thanks to all those people who expressed an interest in having Arlesey Advent windows again this year For those that haven't seen this before, it is a community event where residents and businesses decorate their windows with a festive design and illuminate them each evening during advent It's like a large, outdoor advent calendar that people can follow as they walk or drive round Arlesey!
If you would like to host one of this years windows please drop us an email before the end of October Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates about the Advent windows and the Christmas Fair and get involved!
Welcome to our news and information for October Please follow us on our social media to keep up to date with all of our latest developments. We truly appreciate the suppor t of our community - Thank you.
Another busy month, numbers are down due to the summer holidays and the fact that there are food vouchers being given out by agencies. This gave us a chance to catch up a bit, but these vouchers end at the end of August.
We had an incredible garage sale and made nearly £600, which is amazing, so thank you to all who suppor ted us and a special thanks to our volunteers who as usual came through brilliantly. Our numbers this month for referrals are 504 and top up bags are 457. The food for the top up bags would other wise go in landfill if we didn’t give it out We have had a lot of interest in my job and the cutoff date for applying is mid-September Then begins the inter view process
The chapel phase 1 work is going well, and we hope to move our food operation and be fully working, out of the lower floor, by the end of October During October we hope to have an open day to show people our new food operation With phase 2, which is the upper floors, we have had to do some of the work in tandem with the phase 1, so when we star t working on phase 2 it doesn’t inter fere with our food parcels in anyway This has caused a few issues which we had to deal with earlier than hoped but it is going ok We need a lift fitted for wheelchair access, over the 4 levels and this alone is estimated at about £50,000 and with lowering the entrance level for disability access, which we obviously need to do, this and the other work involved is not cheap God has been so so good to us, we never imagined 4 years ago, we would be where we are now and in such a blessed position and we are confident the funds
Come along and join us at Arlesey WI Hall Tuesday 14th October at 6 45pm for 7 00pm
HARVEST FESTIVAL Earlier star t this month for our Har vest Festival Supper Tickets £7 00 each to include light supper and soft drinks. You are welcome to bring your own tipple too Please if possible could members please bring an item for the NEED PROJECT, a local charity we suppor t.
Our speaker for the evening is Sally Searle who will be giving us an insight into children's lives in Kenya, empowering them through education and training, the challenges of keeping them in school, when pover ty often causes them to be excluded from the education system Secondar y Education is neither compulsor y or free. If your not a member and would like to attend or join, please call Rita on 01462 638347.
we need to finish will come.
Our architect is doing drawings and visuals for Phase 2, so we can chase funding and show people what the upstairs will look like and how it will benefit our community and clients.
In closing, thank you all for your incredible suppor t. Without it, we would not be able to do any of the things we do in our community.
Blessings and praise God always, Gordon
OUR MONTH IN FIGURES: 504 parcels provided in 20 working days • 457 top- upbags collected from our Pop- up sites • £37,330 estimated value of the food for the month • £6,602 50, the average monthly cost to run the charity 754 adults, 613children & 34 pensioners helped (includes best before food )
Each m s feature to focus on the people that help shape our loca c ng the faces b ehind ou r local businesses
T his month we are talking to Ke vin Du ff from Satchells Estate Agents
Kevin, You have been Branch Manager at Satchells now for many years. You must know an awful lot about this area and seen many changes during your time here? Yes, I have seen many, many changes but for the most par t these have been really positive! This area is a really great place to live and to work - We are ver y, ver y for tunate that we have such a great community around us
Speaking of community - what do you think makes Arlesey stand out from other local towns and villages? For me it is the people. We have some ver y community minded residents here which really is unique. From local businesses to your neighbours next door, Arlesey is ver y for tunate to have some really fantastic individuals living among us who help make it such a great place to live.
Having known you for many years we know you enjoy travelling and socialising with friends and family. When you are not working, how do you choose to spend your time? Nothing means more to me than my family, I am blessed with incredible grandchildren who enjoy being spoiled by their Grandad - this as you can imagine, gives me a great deal of enjoyment Life is for finding happiness in ever y thing we do and surrounding ourselves with the best people in order to achieve this
Staying topical, we have recently had a bi-election in Stotfold which in itself has raised a fair amount of topical debate and highlighted some impor tant community issues, some of which affect Arlesey also. When you are introducing the area to anyone that knows ver y little about the village, what are the most poignant things you would choose to highlight and why?
Personally I choose to focus on our schools (especially if they have a family,) and also our convenience for major transpor t links Arlesey is a fantastic place to live, especially if you commute into larger cities but like to live in rural surroundings It also boasts some wonder ful community events which help add to that village feel
Lastly, If you could grant three wishes to your young grandchildren as they grow up and discover the world, what would they be and why? This is an easy one for me. I would wish them good health and happiness. I realise this is only two but I truly believe this is all you need in life to succeed. We live in fairly uncer tain times and can all face some tough challenges along the way. If you are able to live a healthy, happy life wherever possible, then it helps make for a really great foundation for the future.
Ever yone of us has a bir thday! And many of us are bought up with stories surrounding our bir ths and maybe even conception! Our original bir thday is usually, not always, when we are given the name that others will know us by Unless we change it
Like many, I was born to parents who already had a girl, ‘ordered’ a boy and got me! However, they shared their first name choice for a girl was Lindsey, but they changed it at the last minute to Joanne When I found my faith at thir ty, I realised God had inter vened on my bir thday to call me
Joanne, which means, ‘God is gracious’!
Following the most challenging three years of my adult life, I have just celebrated my fiftieth bir thday in a LARGE way! And I’m still going!
However, bir thdays are not always a joyous occasion They can be an emotionally charged time, full of unfulfilled hopes and expectations! They can also turn up the volume on the pain of those we have loved and lost, in whatever way. We all deal with bir thdays differently, some favouring the
‘it’s just another day’ approach, of just wanting the day to be done Others go all out milking it for all its wor th (me this year) and many are somewhere in the middle There is no right or wrong, just our personal preference
The change of a decade can be par ticularly per tinent whether due to self-imposed, age -related expectations, or those of Society (real or imagined) As a fifty-year-old woman, I’m unmarried, childless, Volvo-less, only just sor ting my pension after ten years of procrastination and largely unconventional Thanks to being thrown out of home at seventeen, I got on the proper ty ladder young, so I do have a small mor tgage!
And I love my life (mostly!).

Autumn has begun and the har vest has been gathered in. All around we see the changes in nature in preparation for the coming winter season. Autumn is a time to give thanks for the abundance of nature, for food that comes from the ear th and for the richness of our natural surroundings and all of creation. For Christians it is time to thank God for his provision and love.
It is also a time when we can think about how we can offer that love when we see the needs of others around us in our community and our world We can always be par t of the solution in small ways, through acts of kindness and love, to people we know and people we don’t know One way of offering suppor t to others in our community is through the Need Project A wonder ful team who are fighting food pover ty on a daily basis to ensure that when folks are in need, there is always provision

The church is open ever y day and ever yone is welcome to come into the church to enjoy the space, a place of peace and prayer or join in any of our ser vices. We look for ward to welcoming you.
All are welcome to Ser vices at St Peter ’s in October 2025

The ‘cosy cinema’ Hospital road was first licensed in 1920 as the Victor y by Mr S.C.Gray of Sandy. An early manager was William Cotter who had his daughter as a projectionist. Cotter was a professional actor who put on stage shows for charity. On Saturday nights he would move the seats and put on dances. he charged half price to all of the unemployed during the 1920’s Mr F W Kirby took over as proprietor and manager in the late 1920’s, running the cinema with only one projector so you had to wait for the reel to be changed mid film
The cinema closed for a while before being taken over by Mr Jackson It then closed again before re -opening as the Premier in the 1930’s by Mr Street Mr Street had two projectors and a slide projector During this time, the film ‘All quiet on the western front’ was shown and new films were transpor ted to Arlesey via the Three Counties Bus Company The cinema now opened nightly and three times on a Saturday Unfor tunately it was forced to close again as it did not make enough money in 1935 it was taken over by the Touring Talking Picture Co who redecorated it, cur tained the stage and installed coloured lights Seats in the cinema cost 6d to 1s 3d The
first manager was Mr Plum who was succeeded by Frank Br yant, Frank Saunders and finally Mrs Dalton of Arlesey. The Cosy Cinema in Buntingford took it over eventually and ran it until it closed in 1958. Mr Randall tried reopening the cinema however it finally closed it’s doors for the last time in 1962.
