Stotfold Good Neighbour Group, a group of volunteers based in Stotfold and Fair field in Bedfordshire have been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntar y Ser vice for 2025. This is the highest award a local voluntar y group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.

Stotfold Good Neighbour Group was formed in December 2012, with the intention of helping the residents of Stotfold, Fair field and Astwick Help, such as taking residents to Doctors, Hospitals, taking residents shopping, helping with indoor tasks such as changing a light bulb, befriending and running Chair Based Exercise classes and a Social Club called “Friends on Friday”
Stotfold Good Neighbour Group is one of 231 national charities, social enterprises and voluntar y groups to receive the prestigious award this year and the only one in Bedfordshire. Their work, along with others from across the UK, reminds us of all the ways fantastic volunteers are contributing to their local communities and working to make life better for those around them.
The King’s Award for Voluntar y Ser vice aims to recognise outstanding work by local volunteer groups to suppor t their communities It was created in 2002 to celebrate Her Late Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee and was continued following the accession of His Majesty The King 2025 marks the third year of The King’s Award for Voluntar y Ser vice
Recipients are announced annually on 14th November, The King’s Bir thday Award winners this year are wonder fully diverse and include volunteer groups from across the UK, Representatives of Stotfold Good Neighbour Group will receive the award cr ystal and cer tificate from Mrs Susan
Lousada - Lord-Lieutenant for Bedfordshire in the coming months In addition, two volunteers from Stotfold Good Neighbour Group will be invited to attend a Royal Garden Par ty at Buckingham Palace in May or June 2026, along with other recipients of this year ’s award

The Chair of Stotfold Good Neighbour Group, John Talbot, told the Stotfold News Magazine how delighted he was that the group’s work has been recognised. Adding, that without the hard work and commitment of all of their volunteers, the effect on the wellbeing and mental health of the Community would be considerable Congratulations to all of the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group committee and volunteers

A year ago, I founded Stotfold Men's Walk and Talk in memor y of my dearest friend, who tragically took his own life, leaving behind his eight-month-old daughter and many loving friends and his loving girlfriend His loss changed me forever and it inspired something meaningful - our mens walking group

Today, our group offers a safe space where anyone can show up exactly as they are whether they’re carr ying stress, hear tbreak, grief, fear, or simply looking for connection Week after week, we walk, we talk, and we remind each other that no one has to face their struggles alone As we mark our one -year anniversar y, I want to thank ever y single person who has walked with us, talked with us and helped build this safe space This group exists because of the courage of men who show up for themselves and for each other
Here’s to another year of connection, healing, and hope. It’s great to hear how the group has helped some of our regular walkers: Thank you, David.
For me the real power of the group is that we all feel comfor table with each other, knowing that we can discuss whatever comes up while we are walking. Just being able to express stuff that is going on in our life enables us to externalise it. This is something that you can't do on your own. It's also a great star t to the weekend. - Jon
It's been a good year from my point of view. Loads of suppor t between the team, as we learn to talk as we walk I find it a refreshing break to the routine of life, coupled with the fresh air and stinging nettles We've got a great team and it would be nice to lever some new faces out of bed on a Saturday morning - Duncan To find out more contact David at kos david@hotmail com
Stotfold Slimming World members once again collected lots of festive food items to donate to The Need Project as par t of their Christmas campaign.

If your Christmas Tree usually sits around looking sad after the festivities then here is a great way of disposing of your tree whilst helping to raise funds for our local Garden House Hospice at the same time
The Hospice ‘Treecycling’ is super easy to join in with ( just scan the QR code on the adver t) and arrange to have your tree collected and disposed of for as little as just £5.
All money raised will help the Hospice in their fight to remain a vital resource for our community.
It currently costs £8 5m each year to provide Hospice ser vices free of charge to our local area Ever y penny donated will make a real difference to people affected by a life -limiting illness or living with a long - term condition in Stotfold and beyond
The Hospice currently faces a huge financial deficit which will inevitably impact heavily on the wonder ful ser vice it is able to provide within our community.
If you have a real tree this year, why not star t your New Year with a feel-good resolution and pledge just £5 to help our local Hospice ser vice continue to do the amazing work that they do. For more details on this and other fundraising ideas please look up www.ghhospicecare.org.uk

Dear Editor,
I just wanted to thank you for featuring our ar ticle on the Three Counties Hospital books last month. Your amazing ar ticle helped us to sell lots of copies, raising over £300!!! We also had great fun delivering them and were able to spread the word about our local charity at the same time Thank you so much once again, Janet Fielder - Respite at Home
Dear Editor,
I wanted to commend Graham Smith from Brickwork & Paving to other Stotfold & Arlesey News Magazine readers He completed a small job for me on my patio Graham was easy to communicate with and turned up as arranged and did a ver y good job. I would highly recommend him Jane (Arlesey.)
Dear Editor,
I just wanted to say thank you As a family (including the wider family, such as grandparents), we were truly blown away by the response to the post you put up on the magazine Facebook page with regards to Freddies trick & treating - it received well over 400 likes and over 50 comments, not including the messages I was sent by people, some of suppor t, but even someone who offered cardboard from where they work for Freddie to use next year! Freddie even told a pub about his post and they offered to put a collection box up for Freddie so he can buy even more sweets to take out next year! Freddie feels like a real local celebrity (he is happy to sign autographs to anyone who wants them!) It has really shown what an amazing community we have going on here
Ever y like that was made may not have taken much time, but ever y single one gave us all such joy to see and we really felt the love and suppor t it offered us after a ver y difficult few years, which I am sure many SEND families can more than sympathise with. It has also given Freddie a real focus and I think he has many plans for next year (I'm not sure how feasible some of them are, but we will do our best!) such as wanting to reach out to other children who have difficulties in taking par t in Halloween. We have such an amazing community here in Stotfold, I'm sure you see it ever y day, but to experience it like this is... the word 'amazing' doesn't quite convey it. Thank you so much again, Kate.
Dear Editor,
We have been on our travels again, and naturally took our copy of the Stotfold News along with us! Here is Kim in Castries St Lucia with a view of Richard Branson's boat from the top deck of our home for the last two weeks, Marella Discover y 2 Regards, Kim & Steve Jackman

Dear Editor,
It makes us wonder if anyone actually adheres to the 20mph speed limit along Rook Tree Lane Driving towards the Chequers, we often have crazy motorists on our tailpipe gesticulating wildly at us in the rear view mirror We have motorists tr ying to over take by the school. We have even been over taken on the Chequers bend before now!!! It is absolute madness but what is the answer? Name withheld.
Dear Editor,
Once again, thank you from the committee of the Stotfold Community Christmas Fayre for your suppor t in helping publicise this event to the households of Stotfold through the Stotfold News magazine. Held on Saturday 22nd November this year it suppor ted the Pippin Play group to assist them in providing equipment and events for the younger people of our society in their early years. The magnificent sum of £1,242 61 was raised with main sponsorship from Satchells, Austins & EH Crouch with the remainder coming mainly from visitors on the day The raffle first prize hamper was won by Penny & Doug Mitchell with the Christmas cake being won by Esther Cooper, many other prizes were donated by local businesses
The great effor t put in by both committee members and helpers made the event a successful and enjoyable venture once again, so they are each to be thanked ver y much

Have Your Say in Stotfold’s 2026 Residents Sur vey Your views Your town Your future
Stotfold Town Council is inviting all residents to take par t in the 2026 Annual Residents Sur vey, launching on Tuesday 7 Januar y This sur vey is one of the most impor tant ways we listen to the community, understand your priorities, and shape the work we do over the year ahead Whether you’ve lived here for six months or sixty years, ever y individual response matters Over the past two years, we’ve seen a steady rise in par ticipation This year, we hope to build on that success One crucial change for 2026 is encouraging ever y person in the household to complete the sur vey, not just one representative Different generations, lifestyles and experiences often have different needs and perspectives The more voices we hear, the clearer our understanding of Stotfold becomes

your feedback matters
The Annual Residents Sur vey directly feeds into our Strategic Plan, which sets out the medium- term priorities for the town across areas such as Community Facilities, Public Realm & Environment, Climate Action and Community Engagement
Feedback from last year ’s sur vey has already influenced several key areas, including:
• Identifying which parks and open spaces need investment
• Understanding resident views on community safety and neighbourhood quality
• Improving how the Council communicates with residents
• Suppor ting event planning and community activities
• Guiding work on environmental and biodiversity improvements
Your responses provide evidence, not assumptions They help councillors make decisions rooted in real community insight rather than anecdotal feedback This matters when prioritising budgets, planning future projects, or making the case for external funding.
What we’re asking this year
The 2026 sur vey will include questions on:
• How you feel about living in Stotfold
• Community safety and neighbourhood concerns
• How you feel about the facilities that the Town Council offers
• Communication preferences, including whether you’d like to sign up for the Town Council’s e -bulletin
• Awareness of local councillors, and how confident you feel about approaching the Council
These insights help us monitor progress year-on-year, identify gaps, and ensure the Strategic Plan remains aligned with resident expectations
How to take par t The sur vey is available:
• Online via a QR code (published below) on our website and across social media
• On paper, available in the Februar y issue of the Stotfold News Magazine, or from the Greenacre Centre, Memorial Hall, Librar y and other community locations It takes just a few minutes, and all responses are anonymous unless you choose to sign up for the e -bulletin. This year, if you leave your email address, you’ll be entered in to a prize draw to win a £50 voucher of your choice

The sur vey closes on Tuesday 31 March 2026 Results will be analysed and shared at the Annual Town Meeting on Wednesday 29 April 2026 A summar y will also be published on our website and social media channels.
Your voice genuinely shapes the future of our town. Please take a moment to complete the sur vey and encourage others in your household to do the same. Together, we can make Stotfold an even better place to live.

As the calendar turns to 2026, we at Pix Brook Academy are embracing the fresh star t and exciting oppor tunities the new year brings.
We look back with fondness on a truly wonder ful Autumn Term, which concluded with some fantastic community events, including numerous family progress evenings to offer bespoke feedback to suppor t our pupils.
A par ticular highlight was Carols on the Playground for our Year 5 and 6 students, where families gathered together to share a hot drink and a mince pie It was a per fect, festive occasion to celebrate the end of a successful 15 weeks and truly welcomed the Christmas spirit

Now, with the dawn of 2026, we look ahead to the Spring Term and all it has to offer our students This term is traditionally a period of planning and preparation for future pathways. For our older students, this includes a dedicated focus on careers and apprenticeship oppor tunities, with a number of key events and guidance sessions planned to help them make informed choices about life after Pix Brook. We are committed to ensuring ever y student has a clear vision for their future
The Spring Term will also see the continuation and expansion of our vital sustainability work, which is enthusiastically led by our dedicated Student Parliament Our students are passionate about making a

positive environmental impact, both within the school grounds and in the wider community
We look for ward to sharing more details about their ambitious projects ver y soon. We are excited for the learning, growth, and community engagement that 2026 will bring.

Welcome to date with all of our latest developments We truly appreciate the suppor t of our community - Thank you

I always say, the months go round ver y fast and here we about to star t yeat another new year Our numbers were back up in November to 623 and we gave away 456 top up bags, which would other wise go to landfill, so that as always is good news. Ellie, who is taking my job over when I stand down at the end of Januar y, has star ted and is finding her feet and is settling in well.
The project was set up many years ago to feed hungr y families and our food is only accessible via our referral system. This ensures those who receive from us, do so through an agency, who have engaged with the family or client, and they know it is needed Those agencies can be found on our website
In addition, another way we can help is by giving away surplus food, that we pick up daily from several supermarkets This food, if we didn’t give it away at our venues, would go into land fill

This food is free to anyone who can find a use for it and does not need a referral as we don’t want to see it binned. We continue to work with Feed up Warm up, feeding the homeless with surplus food and also Kings Community Church in Letchwor th who also work with those in need

Sadly, within the UK, volunteering rates are declining, according to government figures And yet giving our time, skills and energy can reap so many rewards in return Our team of volunteers here at the Mill will vouch for this – having made new friends, learned new skills and experienced the pride and satisfaction of contributing to our local community and town’s heritage

As we head into the halfway point of the season, we would like to thank you for the enthusiasm and suppor t you bring to our club Your encouragement from the sidelines plays a major role in creating a positive experience for our players, and we truly appreciate the time and energy you invest in helping them grow With that in mind, we kindly ask for your continued suppor t in a way that allows all of our footballers to enjoy the game safely and respectfully Football can be an emotional spor t, and it’s natural to feel passionate during matches However, we ask that this passion remains positive and never crosses into aggression whether directed toward referees, coaches, or especially opposing players and their families.
Our goal at Stotfold Juniors is to model spor tsmanship, respect, and fair play. When the players see their managers, parents and guardians demonstrating calm, suppor tive behaviour, it helps them develop those same qualities on and off the field. By keeping our sideline atmosphere encouraging and respectful, we create a safer and more enjoyable environment for ever yone involved
Thank you for being an essential par t of our football community Your par tnership helps us teach not only the game itself, but also the character and values that come with being a great teammate

Hello from St. Guthlac’s Church!
One of the many things the late Dr Michael Mosley is remembered for, is his Radio 4 programme and book, Just One Thing. Dr Mosley offered a multitude of research backed and practiced ideas that could help and impact upon our health and wellbeing
The idea of finding ‘just one thing’ is itself an appealing concept and something that many of us do when we are facing a new year; we consider what changes we might need to make or want to make for ourselves or others How do we want to star t afresh in Januar y?
In the Christian calendar Christmas is followed by the season of Epiphany, recalling the visit of the wise men or magi to the child Jesus. They come bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh – gold for a king, frankincense a symbol of deity, of God and myrrh used for the anointing in death - gifts that give us clues about who Jesus and all that would come in Jesus’ life These gifts, point us to all that is possible with Jesus I wonder if when the wise men chose their one thing to give, they knew all that would come, what oppor tunity and possibility it would open up?
So, maybe as you are wondering what is to come in 2026 in your life, maybe have a think about what your ‘one thing’ is, what gift can you give yourself or others to open up new oppor tunities and possibilities to live well yourself and with those around you?
Have a ver y blessed New Year!
All are welcome to our Sunday Ser vice on 4th Januar y at 11:15am, followed by refreshments.

As the New Year begins, Teasel will be holding their Annual General Meeting and Winter Social -a time to reflect back on the achievements of the year and over 500 volunteer hours of work
Whilst most of our time is spent on the Nature Reser ve, we star ted the year with pollarding the willows on the riverside at Centenar y Wood, and in Autumn cut the grass / nettles around Jubilee Wood On the Reser ve we have tackled all the usual Winter tasks like coppicing Hazel, har vesting the Osiers and clearing the ditch in the wetland area In Spring through to Autumn, we used donated woodchips to improve

the path around JohnStan Wood and created a fancy entrance to the “play area”, incorporating some of the willow osiers Some giant (wooden) mushrooms have also magically appeared nearby!
Each year also sees changes in our membership, we inevitabley lose some, but we were delighted to welcome several new members this last year and we are for tunate to have such an enthusiastic group of volunteers. Such a group does of course still need some organizing, and after many years carr ying out that role, Val Balderstone will now be stepping back from that responsibility Val has been involved with Teasel for many years, and contributed so much, both organizing and par ticipating in work par ties, manning the stand at the Steam Weekends and other events –not to mention the

For now, our Winter work is well under way, with a final section of hedge laying to complete on the left as you go into the second meadow The original Hawthorn hedge is ver y overgrown, so there has been a fair bit of work to thin that out and remove some of the tops. This in turn results in a lot of unwanted material, which in the past we might have burnt – but we do tr y to avoid that if possible. There is too much to just dump in random heaps, so we are using the “dead hedging” technique to stack the material in a more orderly fashion, whilst still getting the benefit of habitat creation Other volunteers have been coppicing more of the Hazel, some of which are also quite overgrown – but we will still get several stakes for the hedge laying, and also repairs in the play area There is lots more still to do before Spring and the birds star t nest building again, so lets hope we continue to be lucky with the weather

This month we are delighted to feature one readers memories of his childhood home. Number 10 by Rober t Draycott. I was born at number 10 - not that one, but number 10 Vaughan Road Dr Green attended my bir th and his fee was £5 (over a week's wage in 1947 ) My grandparents had moved there in 1928 when it was first built It was in the family until 1989 As it ended up, I only lived there for about a month, but it became 'up the road' for us and provided many great memories One was of the magnificent apple tree which bore such beautiful fruit. Then there was the openness of the long back gardens -no fences or hedges dividing neighbours from each other. Mrs Rollins lived at no. 8, looked after by daughter Elsie, we could walk through to there as we could to the Dear's and Granny Botting's at 12 and 14.

The house had three bedrooms a downstairs bathroom, living room, kitchen, and an outside toilet Not bad for 1928 Gran did not go out much, but she did go to the Methodist Sisterhood with Mrs Dear, she also took washing in, or at least Phil Randall's I always thought her name was shor t for Phylis, but I am not sure about that She was cer tainly the sister of Sam and George Randall who ran the Mill She came along on Monday mornings, on her bike, wearing men's trousers which struck me as ver y unusual The other thing I remember is being told that Gran Dilley had had her cataracts dealt with, entailing two weeks of laying flat on her back. Monday lunchtime brought Mr Smith over from Moss's in Baldock to take her grocer y order. He ate his sandwiches whilst Grandad listened to Roy Plumley's 'Deser t Island Discs'.
As far as our own family memories go, I ought to star t at 25 Queen Street where Mum was born in 1923. By the time I had star ted school, that house had long been abandoned and was in a ruinous state, an empty shell
which we were warned not to explore It was just across the road from another abandoned building which I was told had been a Fish and Chip shop In the early 1950's Queen Street still had something of a countr y lane about it Vaughan Road on the other hand had proper pavements lined by about 40 identical houses rented out by the council I am sure that someone will know where the name Vaughan came from for what was a new road in the 1920's Over to the historians Rober t Draycott.

Here is one for the eagle eyed readers - where is this? We were kindly gifted several photographs from reader Doug Charles - this is one above suprisngly stumped us!
Can you tell where it is? The right hand side of the photo is a great deal more developed than it is here and the left hand side remains relatively unchanged? Let us know if you have any ideas!

Do you recognise this location?
This picture was shared with us by Musso Everitt who has compiled a whole catalogue of postcards from Stotfold Each page displays an old postcard from Stotfold, collected over many, many yearsThis one might be slightly easier to guess!
