Arlesey NEWS

Delivered FREE to 2,700 homes in Arlesey.

Final word from the Editor..

As you are reading this column, you may or may not be aware that this is the final issue of the Arlesey New Magazine. After seven enjoyable years of providing Arlesey with it’s ver y own village news publication, we have made the incredibly hard decision to cease deliver y in the village

Steadily, our Arlesey publication became more and more reliant on our Stotfold News Magazine, making it increasingly difficult for us to justify the costs involved and for us to produce the magazine that we felt Arlesey residents deser ve.

We will always be so ver y grateful for the suppor t we received from our regular contributors and our Arlesey adver tisers, hopefully will continue to work alongside you all inside our Stotfold issue. To anyone that has ever sent us a letter, a bir thday announcement, phoned us or stopped to chat to us in the street whilst out delivering, we thank you so much for your suppor t

The final thank you must go to our wonder ful team of 28 deliver y volunteers, many of who joined us way back in 2019 We simply could not have made it to 7 years without your loyalty, hard work and friendship WE OWE YOU THE BIGGEST THANK YOU.

As my childhood home, Arlesey will forever have a ver y special place in my hear t We have made some lovely friends during the last 7 years - Arlesey really does have the most suppor tive, loyal & friendly residents

Thank you so much for having us Joanne - Editor X

News from ACORN

THE CHALK STREAMS OF ARLESEY

There has been a lot in the news this Summer about the poor health of the nations rivers, with increasing pollution a major issue And you may also have seen mention of Chalk Streams, potentially some of the best rivers in terms of water quality, and the diverse ecosystems that they suppor t

With only about 200 such rivers in the world, Arlesey is for tunate in having 3 of them in and around our parish The gardeners amongst you may not have come across much chalk – but we sit on the nor thern edge of a band

of chalk geology. Most well known is the Chilterns, but runs from Wiltshire / Hampshire nor th east through East Anglia and under The Wash. Chalk hills run just south of Hitchin, Baldock and Cambridge. Chalk is a ver y porous material, meaning in winter time when there is more rain, the hills act like giant sponges, storing the water

It then slowly filters out of the base of the hills, to emerge as springs which form our Chalk Streams The chalk also filters out any impurities, and adds minerals, which suppor ts a great variety of wildlife

The first of our 3 rivers is the River Ivel, which flows east to west along the nor thern parish boundar y. The source of this river is Ivel Springs, just this side of Baldock. From there it flows through Radwell and Stotfold (powering the Mill); then west along the top of Arlesey parish and nor th roughly following the railway line to Biggleswade, and eventually meeting up with the River Ouse, finally reaching the sea in nor th Nor folk near Kings Lynn Three Arlesey footpaths take you across the fields and down to the river which makes them difficult to access; but the third is a bridleway which crosses the Stotfold Road at the old Fox and Duck

Conser vation for Nature

These are linked by a path along the river side (which also links in to Stotfold footpaths)

The next river is the Hiz, which defines the western boundar y of our parish The spring source of the River Hiz lies to the south of Hitchin just outside the village of Charlton, flowing nor th through the centre of Hitchin to Ickleford, and on to Arlesey roughly following the line of the railway Continuing nor th under the A507, it joins up with the Ivel near Henlow Grange Several years back members of Acorn got together with various interested groups and Councils along the line of the river, to create The Hicca Way – a walk that runs all the way from the spring at Charlton to (close to) where it joins the Ivel at Henlow Lakes, using public and permissive footpaths ( Tr y the Town Council or Resource Centre for copies of the leaflet)

Finally there is the Pix Brook, which star ts from a spring in Nor ton Common, Letchwor th; unfor tunately – passing close to the sewerage works; and on through the middle of Stotfold; through Etonbur y Wood; under the A507 at the Arlesey roundabout; and then just skir ting the nor thern residential extent of Arlesey and back under the A507 and railway to meet up with the Hiz and Ivel. Pix Brook has had issues with flooding in the past, and has been much studied to identify causes and possible solutions.

For example, the new development between Arlesey and Stotfold will include an amenity area designed to act as a “flood plain” in times of extreme rainfall.

Our rivers are generally in a good state, but all are under threat from agricultural, industrial and domestic run-off putting unwanted elements in to the water In recent years with drier weather, there have been times when the rivers have dried up, with the water company also taking advantage of the “natural reser voirs” which the chalk hills

create. But still Brown Trout can often be spotted, and a Kingfisher if you are lucky, plus Dragonflies and Damselflies in Summer We should value and take care of our rivers, and recognize them as one of Nature’s gifts

News from St Peter ’s Church

Hello from St Peter ’s Church!

One of the many things the late Dr Michael Mosley is remembered for, is his Radio 4 programme and book, Just One Thing Dr Mosley offered a multitude of research backed and practiced ideas that could help and impact upon our health and wellbeing Whether standing on one leg to improve balance and stamina to reading a bit of a book each day, to stepping into nature on an early morning walk, he gave simple suggestions that amongst them, one is likely to find something that resonates and feels achievable. It is a real gift of how to create oppor tunities and possibilities to live well.

The idea of finding ‘just one thing’ is itself an appealing concept and something that many of us do when we are facing a new year; we consider what changes we might need to make or want to make for ourselves or others How do we want to star t afresh in Januar y?

As we seek to use the oppor tunity presented to us in the dawning of a new year, what one thing might you do, what gift will make a difference to our own lives and for other people?

In the Christian calendar Christmas is followed by the season of Epiphany, recalling the visit of the wise men or magi to the child Jesus They come bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh – gold for a king, frankincense a symbol of deity, of God and myrrh used for the anointing in death - gifts that give us clues about who Jesus and all that would come in Jesus’ life. These gifts, point us to all that is possible with Jesus. I wonder if when the wise men chose their one thing to give, they knew all that would come, what oppor tunity and possibility it would open up?

So, maybe as you are wondering what is to come in 2026 in your life, maybe have a think about what your ‘one thing’ is, what gift can you give yourself or others to open up new oppor tunities and possibilities to live well yourself and with those around you?

Have ver y blessed New Year!

IMPORTANT CHURCHYARD NOTICE

During Januar y and Februar y, as par t of the maintenance of the churchyard we will be ‘ topple testing’ memorials (headstones) to ensure their safety. This involves checking for the stability of the headstones and laying down any that are deemed to be unstable and/or at risk of falling. Where possible, we will seek to contact the family to involve them in this process. If you have any questions about this or are aware of any unstable headstones please do get in touch.

The Need Project Update

Welcome to date with all of our

I always say, the months go round ver y fast and here we about to star t yeat another new year. Our numbers were back up in November to 623 and we gave away 456 top up bags, which would other wise go to landfill, so that as always is good news. Ellie, who is taking my job over when I stand down at the end of Januar y, has star ted and is finding her feet and is settling in well.

The project was set up many years ago to feed hungr y families and our food is only accessible via our referral system. This ensures those who receive from us, do so through an agency, who have engaged with the family or client, and they know it is needed Those agencies can be found on our website

In addition, another way we can help is by giving away surplus food, that we pick up daily from several supermarkets This food, if we didn’t give it away at our venues, would go into land fill

This food is free to anyone who can find a use for it and does not need a referral as we don’t want to see it binned We continue to work with Feed up Warm up, feeding the homeless with surplus food and also Kings Community Church in Letchwor th who also work with those in need

I will be sad to retire from the ever y day running of the project, as it has been my passion for over 23 years, but I know it is time and the project will be in good hands I will still be involved hopefully as I have a massive desire to see the chapel phase2 work finished

Phase 1 is 99 9% finished and we will move in after Christmas and be fully operational from then, Praise God We are as ready as we can be for our Christmas rush and have most things we need and truly hope and pray, we bless those who are referred

As always, I want to thank all our suppor ters for their incredible help, be it by responding to Facebook call outs, prayer suppor t, financial suppor t and just general encouragement. THANKYOU

Also, the amazing group of volunteers who are so committed to the vision of the project. You are so so vital to the project and without you we could not continue and for that we are blessed.

In closing, could you please continue to pray for us as this is a ver y busy time. Please pray for phase 2, so we can finish the community vision we have for the chapel.

Thank you

OUR MONTH IN FIGURES: 623 parcels provided in 30 working days • 456 top- up-bags collected from our Pop- up sites • £45,055 estimated value of the food for the month • £6,602.50, the average monthly cost to run the charity 1556 adults, 1380children & 286 pensioners helped (includes our best before food )
