What’s your fuel?
Mental Health Matters with Jo Loach
Once the clocks go backwards the dark hours increase which many find difficult As a summer person myself, I’ve always preferred the seasons that allow me to play out late in daylight, without getting frozen
I love ever y thing up to and around Christmas but once Januar y comes, I’m over the cold, dark days This self-knowledge about the long, dark days of Winter, informs my game plan in managing it I fuel up by adjusting my mental health maintenance program before I need to –prevention is still better than cure I increase exercise that I love, not just to keep up with cake and crisp consumption but to help my mental (thought life) and emotional health (feelings) I reduce nighttime outings so I can stay cosy at home. I keep lists of TV I want to watch ready for when I am free. I plan and book fun nights with friends around food and/or dancing. I experiment with batch baking new slow cooker/soup recipes and I star t cooking Sunday roasts (or going somewhere that does). I also increase worship
through song and dance Where possible, I decrease stress and increase pleasure (fuel) I implement these practices to suppor t myself to keep noticing all the treats that Winter offers, while increasing comfor t inducing activities for all the challenges, like less daylight And I book breaks to be beside the seaside minus the crowds I refuse to miss what there is to enjoy because of what I don’t enjoy
I know what nourishes me psychologically, spiritually and physically and I increase por tion sizes and frequency accordingly Some call this their fuel
As we enter the season where some put fuel on their home fires, all of us need to know and apply what will keep us fuelled over Winter

Our Tour Of The Ypres Battlefields - written for the Arlesey News by Helen Randall.
In September a group of us from Arlesey and other friends went on our 9th Battlefields Tour to Ypres in Belgium to visit the World War 1 battlefield and memorial sites Each site held such poignancy as we listened to some of the individual stories behind the immaculately kept war graves
One par ticularly poignant moment was the laying of a wreath at the Menin Gate in Ypres on behalf of ‘Arlesey Remembers You.’ The Menin Gate is a beautiful arch built to remember 53 000 British and Commonwealth soldiers whose names are engraved on the arch Each evening since 1928 a shor t ser vice of remembrance takes place, a ver y moving ceremony Three of our soldiers whose names are on our war memorial have their names engraved on the Menin Gate
‘Arlesey
‘Arlesey Remembers You ‘ was a community project set up to lay a cross of remembrance on each of the names from WW1 on the war memorial. An immense task which included a visit to Turkey and a cross being laid in Iraq. A video was made and can be accessed via the website www.arleseyremembersyou.co.uk. Whilst waiting to lay our wreath an exCanadian soldier asked us what ‘Arlesey Remembers You’ was. He was truly inspired and amazed by the project - looking back on it, it really was inspirational.
The young boys and men who fought in WW1 suffered terribly both mentally and physically Most of those who who sur vived the horror of the war did not speak about
their experiences but over the passing years much has been learnt through some personal stories, historians, books and news repor ts from the day. Visits to these sites do not glorify war, but do make one realise the human cost of war and a lasting pain through future generations.
Despite the sadness felt by the 38 people on the trip we still managed to have an enjoyable time socially in the evenings. It is difficult to describe these trips with such opposite emotions being felt, but I for one have never regretted being involved in the organisation of them. As we remember our fallen soldiers this month at our own ser vice at the war memorial, the following words will mean so much
For your tomorrows these gave their today. Lest we forget

News from St Peter ’s Church
Hello from St Peter ’s Church!
As the year slows before the rush and anticipation of Christmas, November is a time to reflect and remember On All Souls Day we remember loved ones no longer with us and on Remembrance Sunday, those who have given themselves for our freedom and safety Sometimes it can help to do something active in grief or remembering and small acts, such as lighting a candle, visiting a place that holds shared memories, visiting the churchyard, spending talking with family and friends, wearing a poppy, or joining in an act of remembrance, all help as we journey through loss and grief
Christians believe that God is in all our journeys and I’m reminded of the words of Psalm 23 which speaks of God never leaving and always being present God who shares life with humanity It is a power ful reminder of God’s eternal love and care. These words can act as a comfor t to us in all our experiences. As you enter November, why not pause and remember the people you love. And if it helps, why not tr y an act of remembrance of your own or join in the special ser vices where we will remember together.

Player/Manager Tommy Cooney under the spotlight this month!
NEED PROJECT Update
This month has been massively busy, due to a number of factors, the main one being the stopping of vouchers due to the end of summer holidays, which reduced our numbers to 504 in August compared to September's amount of 634 plus 540 top up bags, that would other wise go in the bin.
We continue to get massive suppor t from our followers and friends and for that I’m, as always, so so grateful and blessed. We have already had, would you believe, Christmas planning meetings and are in the process of putting together a wish list, so keep an eye out, as we need your help again
Moving on to the Chapel project phase 1 We believe and pray, that we will be operational fully out of the Chapel by the end of October or early November, which is nothing shor t of a miracle, and we thank God for his grace and favour on our ministr y
Your financial suppor t and prayer suppor t has made all this possible and again thank you all, you know who you are, but more impor tantly God knows, and I pray blessing on all of you phase 2 is moving on, with drawings being drawn
and planning now being sought As for me, my plan is to retire early next year from leading the project but still be involved with developing phase 2.
We have completed our inter view process and have, after a lot of prayer and discussion, appointed my successor. Praise God! To be named soon!
In closing, I would like to, as always, really thank ever yone of our wonder ful volunteers, who have worked so hard during our har vest period Thank you to ever y school and Church who shared their har vest with us I also get the chance to talk to children of most ages, and I love talking to them and explaining about sharing the har vest Yesterday, for example, I went to a nurser y school and felt after a few minutes they were on it Well suffice to say, a little boy in the middle of the talk, looked at me and said to me, ‘You have no hair ’ That was it, we left soon after, still laughing! Tomorrow I am going to a nursing home for a har vest ser vice and a talk I wonder how that will turn out! Although last year it was brilliant, and elderly people can really sing
In closing thanks again for ever y thing and remember,
PR AISE GOD ALWAYS, Gordon.
