------- Celebrating 20 Years in 2025 -------

From the Editor Welcome to December!

Trek Success For DKMS Page 5

The 2026 Stotfold calendar Page 5

Our final issue of 2025 is crammed full of Stotfold festivities which we hope everyone will enjoy.

It’s been a fantastic year for the magazine so we wanted to use this column to say a very big THANK YOU to everyone for helping us celebrate the 20th year of the Stotfold News. We are hugely proud of everything we have achieved, none of which would be possible without our advertisers, contributors and delivery volunteers. We are so thankful to each and every one of you for your unwavering support.

We have made some great memories this year, with Stotfest and both Mill events being high up on our list of favourites! The magazine itself has welcomed new advertisers and we continue to develop fresh ideas in order to make our magazine as interesting and relevant as possible.

Next year, you’ll spot some changes which we hope you will both enjoy and find useful. We are saying a very fond farewell this month to two of our regular contributors Jo Loach and David Stedman who will be pausing their features for a while. Thank you both for being so incredibly supportive over the years.

All that’s left is for us to do is wish you all a very Merry Christmas & a wonderful New Year.

Joanne - Editor

Trek Success For Our DKMS

2026 Stotfold Calendar On Sale Now! Copies of the 2026 Stotfold Calendar are now available priced at £6 from the Stotfold Town Council offices at the Greenacre Centre.

Sofia, Lauren, Jenny & Jen smash their £20,000 target for DKMS.

By now you will all be aware of these four incredible ladies and the inspirational challenge they chose to undertake during 2025. Throughout this year Jen, Sofia, Jenny & Lauren have campaigned tirelessly to raise funds for blood cancer charity DKMS after Sofia’s daughter Amelie received their help following her fourth leukaemia diagnosis in only a few years.

This year’s calendar features a wide variety of local scenes, nature and wildlife. Thank you to all who entered to have their pictures included - it was a very tough job for the judges to deicide on just 12! Copies can also be purchased from the Stotfold News stand at the Stotfold Christmas Light Switch On event on 29th November along the High Street.

We are thrilled to report that although slightly blistered and deservedly tired, the ladies successfully completed the final part of their 2025 mission with a 100km trek across the Sahara Dessert. In doing so, the ladies smashed their £20,000 fundraising target in the process! This year’s fundraising events included a quiz, disco, the hugely successful Stotfold Challenge and of course their recent 100km trek across the Sahara Dessert. We think these ladies are simply incredible. More on their story (and their fundraising link) can be found on the link below: https://dkms.enthuse.com/pf/sofia-flatt

News from

Stotfold Town Council Remembrance Day The annual Remembrance Day service and parade was, as always, an opportunity to remember and reflect upon the service and sacrifice made by so many.

Stotfold snow angels. A frosty initiative will be coming to Stotfold once again this year for the winter season. Stotfold Town Council are encouraging local households in the area to volunteer to clear snow and ice from pedestrian routes during a cold snap. In the winter many older people or those with mobility issues stop getting out for fear of slipping on icy or snowy paths, simple acts of kindness like helping keep local paths clear can make a huge difference

Wreaths were laid by Deputy Lieutenant Mrs Deborah Inskip OBE BSc (Hons) FLCM DL, High Sheriff of Bedfordshire Mrs Camilla King, Alistair Strathern MP and local councillors as well as members of the Royal British Legion and local youth groups

Stotfold Snow Angels are a group of local residents who contribute to the safety of their local community, especially in areas that typically don’t receive as much attention as the main high street and pedestrian routes. In return, we’ll supply grit, snow shovel, protective gloves and a hi-vis vest If you’re interested in becoming a Snow Angel, please email enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk or call 01462 730064 Town Council meeting dates (subject to change) Wednesday 7 January 2026 – Building Management Wednesday 14 January 2026 – Community Engagement Wednesday 21 January 2026 – Public Realm (7pm) and Governance and Resources (7.30pm) Wednesday 28 January 2025 – Full Council All meetings start at 7pm unless otherwise specified and are held in the community room, Greenacre Centre, Valerian Way, Stotfold SG5 4HG

Your LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor,

Whilst visiting my childs grave this afternoon at Stotfold cemetery I cam across a man was using a tennis racquet to launch tennis balls indiscriminately for his dog which was off the lead. There is a sign on the gate making it clear that dogs should be on leads (and the £1000 fine it could incur.) On asking the man why he chose to use the cemetery for this purpose, his reply was that he'd done so for years and intended to continue. I’d like to appeal to anyone looking to exercise their dog in the cemetery to please use any of the other alternative spaces (of which there are many) as I for one, found this most distressing to see. We have a wonderfully cemetery which is kept to a really high standard, it would be nice to keep it this way - not to mention the distress it causes families visiting their loved ones graves when witnessing this taking place. Name withheld.

Dear Editor,

It is now nine months since my husband died and I would like to thank all those local people who have been such a help to me since, Of course my immediate neighbours, who have made soup, changed the cooker clock, assembled flat pack items, given me lifts to medical appointments, put away the bins on wet days, pruned overenthusiastic shrubs, chatted on the doorstep, even checked my roof for pigeon damage! ( In case you think I am a wimp I should mention that I am 80 years old and not very mobile!) And then the many folk encountered in the daily round who also make such a difference.....the always cheerful assistants in Stotfold Co op and Days, the friendly regulars in the new Library and its Wild Cafe, the jigsaw organisers and fellow fanatics down at St Mary’s Church, the dog walkers along the riverbank and all the people who just smile and say hello as we pass in the street. Thank you all. The world may be going to hell in a handcart but Stotfold is a sane, strong and heartwarming place to live. Anne Castling, Stotfold Resident

Mental Health

Matters

Christmas; beginnings, middles and endings Many moons ago while working in a secondary school, I was asked, ‘Is Christmas called this because of Jesus Christ?!’. While we all have differing beliefs and faiths, I suspect most agree on the sentiment, if not the source of Christmas. The birth and life of Christ is a model of love, grace, generosity, peace, healing and hope, in a world full of hate, revenge, abuse of power, meanness and fear. While the latter remain prevalent, the gift of Christ remains available to all as the most powerful antidote offering all of the former! And a huge aid for good mental and emotional health. Whatever our beliefs are, most of us recognise and embrace the magic of Christmas as being a time for … increased tolerance, generosity, kindness, celebration, sharing meals, exchanging gifts and enjoying music. All surrounded by sparkly lights that shine brightest during the darkness of Winter. We are reminded throughout the season of the call for Christmas cheer and goodwill to all. However, the season, if not the spirit of Christmas, will end.

Christmas reminds us that life is full of beginnings, (birth of Jesus), transitions (life) and endings (death and resurrection). You can follow me as I embark on a new venture on the Friday morning ‘Music and Mental Health,’ radio show with Chris Anderson at: https://hospitalradiobedford.org.uk/. I will be interviewed regularly as their resident Psychotherapist. Or you can read my blog at: https://joloach.com

Life is always changing, but Christ’s invitation to live fully, remains all year. Keep choosing to look after your mental and emotional health by increasing what/who/where makes your heart sing and reducing what does not! Happy Christmas all.

News from When the Mill closes for the season, you would be forgiven for thinking that nothing happens until the Spring…however It’s when we plan for the year to come and invest our time in maintaining the Mill and Nature Reserve so that everything is in good working order in time for 2026!

Investing in proper drainage to try to prevent very muddy event days!

So, over the last month: • We have overseen the completion of the chimney restoration works -which means that Stotfold’s iconic chimney is now back in full splendour!

Description: Female, approx 17 to 25 years old, fair hair, hazel eyes, scar on her right leg, right ear piercing Clothing: A distinctive brown Afghan coat, brown leather waistcoat, white cotton blouse, black jeans – possibly in a child’s size, chiffon lace scarf Know someone who could help us find answers? Please show them this article.

the Mill. • The Mill’s Trustees have organised the cutting and removal of the invasive Mares Tail weed from the river. This will enable the Mill wheel to turn in the new season and our fauna and flora in the river to breathe! Our stretch of the River Ivel now looks so much better – and we not only cleared our section of river but supported the community by clearing the river almost up to the Scout Hut! Please go and take a look as the Nature Reserve is open all year round.

Clearing the River Ivel of the invasive Mares Tail weed – happy swans!

• We invested in and enabled proper drainage at the field where we hold our major events to try to prevent very muddy boot days if it rains! • We upgraded all of our Mill computers to Windows 11 • We’ve already started planning our events for 2026 – which will be our 22nd May Steam Fair and 20th anniversary of our Working Steam Weekend! • Flour and oats are still being produced and supplied to our wholesale customers and will continue to be produced throughout the winter months. After all that, our team of volunteers really has earned a good rest over the Christmas break! Wishing you all a wonderful, peaceful, and happy festive season. We thank you for your continued support – and if you are looking for a New Year’s resolution for 2026, we would love to welcome you as a new volunteer to our team! The food ordering is a massive task, as we need all the usual additional items for Christmas, but in big numbers. I think, I can say for all of us, the paid and unpaid, we really love the Christmas period and the fellowship we share as a team, it is a real joy. My future as project leader is drawing to a close, after over 23 years, but I know the future of this ministry is in good safe hands and God as always is front and centre of everything we do. I will still be a trustee and be heavily involved in phase 2, but as for involvement in phase 1, that is someone else’s ministry now and I pray blessings on the person who has that privilege and joy. We will keep people posted about our open day with phase 1. A message from our new Project Director: I’m Ellie, I would like to introduce myself as I take on the role of the new Project Director for the Need Project. I’ve seen firsthand, the project grow from the beginning to where it is now and feel privileged to be part of the next chapter. I feel passionate about the ethos of the Need Project and what it stands for. My previous jobs have given me a good knowledge and understanding of housing needs and the processes, benefit claims and their challenges, and the struggles we can all face. I have worked for local housing associations and Councils in roles such as, Tenancy Support Officer, Benefits Advisor and a Housing Officer.

These jobs and my own personal experiences will equip me well for the role ahead. I believe God places us where we need to be and gives us opportunities and challenges to take on. Gordon continues: In closing thank you for your incredible support and please pray that the extra £250k to £300k will arrive, so phase James’s Carpentry 2 can be fully developed and be a massive asset to & General Handyman our community. Service

Our story truly is a miracle of Our Gods provision. Ask me, I would love to talk about it, and when you realise as I did that God can do immeasurably more than we can dream or imagine, things happen!

Praise God always Gordon

Roecroft Lower School The festive season is one of joy and excitement in school – alongside our learning we fit in an array of events and special days for the children and staff to enjoy together.

This month we have an update from our Early Years lead: ‘In September we welcomed our new cohort of children into Roecroft. During the first half of the Autumn term our topic in Reception was ‘Marvellous Me!’ and our learning was based around the children themselves, their families, where they live and how they have changed since they were born. The children really enjoyed this topic, particularly when we learnt about where we live, on planet Earth, in the country of England and the town of Stotfold. The children used Google Maps and the Clevertouch board to zoom into Stotfold from afar and to find familiar landmarks within the town with the new library and the fish and chip shops being particular highlights! Throughout this topic, the children have also been looking closely at their own features when drawing themselves and discussing how they have changed from being a baby.

cohort as many of them were born during the pandemic so we heard a lot about FaceTime chats, garden parties and meeting friends and families through windows!

During the second half of the term our topic has been ‘Let’s Celebrate!’ We began the term by learning about Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day, Diwali and birthdays. As part of our learning about Remembrance Day we found out about the soldiers during World War I and II and what they did to keep us safe. We created poppy pictures and wrote thank you messages to them. We also celebrated friendship during anti-bullying week and the importance of having friends and being kind and caring to each other.

We are now beginning our exciting Christmas activities and are looking forward to celebrating this with our friends in school and are also very excited to perform our Christmas nativity ‘A Reception Christmas Cracker’ to our families and friends later this month.’ All the Roecroft family wish you a peaceful festive period. Warmest wishes, Mrs Cross

Fairfield Park Lower School Welcome to our news. November has been a time of reflection and togetherness across our school community. The children made beautiful wreaths and joined together for a minute of silence in remembrance. Mrs. Stone represented the school at the community service, where she laid a wreath on our behalf.

This term our Year 1s have explored chronology and learnt about how toys of nowadays compare with toys of the past.

Our Year 3s have learnt about local history. Year 4 explored and compared our local area with Campania in Italy. Year 2 learnt the history of technology and how it’s changed our lives. Our Early Years classes have explored celebrations from different religions, culminating in a nativity performance.

Christmas is now upon up and is always a special time in school and this year was no exception! It’s the time of year where there is a hive of activity where

children are learning Christmas carols, engaging songs and lines for performances, but also they are continuing to work hard with their learning across the curriculum!

We would like to wish all our families a very happy Christmas.

St Mary’s Academy Christmas really is one of the best times of year to be working in a school. The first weekend in December will be spent putting up our Christmas trees and decorations so when the children come into school it will be transformed. We may also have a visit from the mischievous Christmas elf!

We are delighted to say all of our children will be practising for our Christmas Concerts to be presented to their families on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th December. This year, once again, the concerts will run during the school day at 9.15am and 2.00pm. We do not charge entry for concerts but we will be supporting The Need Project again this year with voluntary donations collected during Concert week. Due to the school concerts our children will be invited to wear something festive to celebrate Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 12th December. Any donations will be made to the very worthy Save the Children Charity.

Our school choir will be busy rehearsing for their Christmas performances on Saturday 29th November for the Stotfold Christmas Lights Switch on and on Saturday 13th December at Fairfield Manor Care Home. Our parent’s association, the SMSA will also be running a number of events through the Festive Season, starting with a Wreath Making Workshop on Friday 5th December, the popular Christmas Gift Shop where the children buy and select a special gift for their families on Monday 15th and finishing with the Grand Raffle Draw on Friday 19th December. Please also note we have a Happy Bags Collection on Monday 19th January for all those who have a sort out through the Christmas holidays! Happy Bags will collect adult and children clothing, shoes, fashion accessories, handbags, belts, hats, jewellery and perfume. (They will not take unwanted pre-loved toys and games but we are always grateful for donations of this kind for the children’s wet play

and extra-curricular clubs!) As is now tradition in the last week of term, we will have Christmas Dinner on Wednesday 17th and a Christmas Buffet Lunch, ‘Snow Queen’ Panto and Class Parties on Thursday18th December. Our Christmas Carol Service will also be held at St Mary’s Church on Friday 19th, so look out for our procession on our way to Church! Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped or supported the work of our school again this year.

From all of us at St Mary’s, we would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.

Pixbrook Academy Pix Brook Academy Life: A Half Term of Community, Culture, and Citizenship

As the days grow shorter and the first term draws to a close, life at Pix Brook Academy has been nothing short of vibrant. Recent weeks have seen a strong focus on personal development opportunities, ensuring our students receive ample experiences that enrich their education well beyond the classroom walls.

Our commitment to providing a holistic education has resulted in a flurry of fantastic activities across all key stages. We were thrilled to welcome Olympic cyclist Alice Sharpe, who delivered an inspirational assembly and led our Key Stage 2 students through a fitness circuit, perfectly complementing our healthy lifestyle focus. Our Year 10 music students enjoyed a trip to London to see the hit musical 'Wicked!', while Year 6 stepped back in time with a fascinating visit to the Victorian School. Year 7 broadened their horizons during their important faith tour, and Year 5 enjoyed a delicious and fun trip to Cadbury’s World.

THE ONLY LEGAL ADVICE YOU’LL EVER NEED

The Academy was filled with odd socks during Anti-Bullying Week, a visible and colourful display of our commitment to embracing difference and being kind. During UK Parliament Week, we explored the fundamental ideas of democracy. All students had the opportunity to cast a vote in our school election. Key Stage 2 students voted on how to spend sports funds, while Key Stage 3 and Key 4 students participated in a popular vote for canteen menu changes—a topic very close to their hearts (and stomachs!). We are now looking forward to the remaining few weeks of the Autumn Term, which will conclude with well-deserved rewards activities and festive Christmas celebrations of student achievements.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank every parent, carer, and community member for their ongoing support throughout this busy half term. Your partnership is invaluable.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Stotfold Junior Football Club Girl’s football is definitely thriving in Stotfold and growing so fast at the moment, and with our Lionesses doing so well, some may say that the ladies are better to watch than the men!

Managed by Len Francis, coached by Robert Anscombe & Gary Bidgway, and sponsored by Gekko & www.equans.com we believe that the Corals are in great hands and capable of great things.

The U14 Coral’s are a new team, and started their season in September. They got off to a brilliant start, winning their first game 9-0. The Corals are now currently 6 games into their season and as yet remain unbeaten in all competitions, scoring 36 goals and conceding just 4!

The U14 Coral’s with a great start to their season & one to watch!

This season Stotfold Juniors celebrate their 50th anniversary and for the first time in this club’s history Stotfold Juniors have their first “all girls team” competing in the Royston crow league, a predominantly boys league. This team are the U14 Corals, a team of girls that want to pitch themselves against boy’s teams, week in week out and prove that they have what it takes to compete!

This team of girls are showing that they can mix it with the boys and come out on top, gaining many plaudits along the way.

28

We will definitely be keeping a close eye on this team throughout the season. As Stotfold junior’s girls’ football is growing faster than ever, with more girls’ teams now than ever before, including our girls’ wildcats’ program, we hope that this Coral’s girls’ team will inspire our other girls’ teams at Stotfold junior to strive to be great and show that there are no boundaries anymore, and opportunity is there for all at Stotfold junior FC. Huckleberry Cottage on the corner of Common Road

Huckleberry Cottage - (information taken from Stotfold Bury & four other houses, written by Bert Hyde.)

Did you guess the names of our Carnival Queen and her courtage? - Thanks to Jennifer Legate for calling in with the following names: Betty Carpenter (Queen) (L to R) Jean Lancaster, Pam Shepherd & Edna Rowley.

The ‘chocolate box’ cottage as it’s often referred to sits on the corner of Common Road and is known to most as the former home of the late Gordon & Frances Huckle. Now occupied by a new owner, the cottage is steeped in local history. Built in the late 1600’s by the lord of Stotfold Manor, it was originally intended to house two families.

In 1795 the cottage was purchased by John Williamson - a wealthy baker from Baldock. The cottage stayed within this family until the 1841 census when the owner was named as Thomas Reynolds. By curious coincidence, Mr Reynolds turned out to be the Great, Great Grandfather of Gordon Huckle. In 1841 Mr Reynolds lived at Huckleberry Cottage alongside 12 other residents! In 1871 the cottage was owned by Joseph Cooper and as time went on, the cottage became the traditional home of the horsekeeper from nearby Manor Farm. One such tenant was William Jeffs. The cottage was then sold to Bernard Whitehead - alongside a large piece of adjacent land, where a new house was built costing £759. This house was known as Manor Lodge and is known by us all today as the Stotfold Conservative Club. Bernard was well known locally for wearing a large diamond ring on his finger and had a habit of using it to cut his initials (BLW) on various pieces of glass. His initials can still be seen (alongside the date of May 11 1910) on the window of the sitting room at Huckleberry Cottage. In 1959 Gordon Huckle bought the cottage from Bernard’s daughter in law Mrs Alice Whitehead. Gordon and his wife Frances lived at the property until Frances passed away in 2022.
