A European Adventure
Spending six weeks in Europe visiting some of the most beautiful places to ever exist, we certainly loved hearing all about it from Abbey. Soaking up the food, culture and incredible experiences, she visited Italy, Poland, the UK, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Croatia. To sum her trip up, Abbey said: “I’m so grateful to have experienced such a rich mix of history, culture and fun across Europe A once in a lifetime journey!” Talk about a grand European adventure! This month, we sat down with award winning Birdblack Design and got a little insight into the world of interior design. A world that is much more than placing a few rugs and cushions; it’s a world that transforms a house to a home. We asked them a few questions and here is what they had to say...
Tell us a little about Birdblack Design. Who you are and what do you do?
Right in the heart of Wollongong, you’ll find Birdblack Design: a creative, full-service Interior Design studio and showroom that’s all about making beautiful, functional spaces. We just celebrated 11 incredible years in business this June, and we’re proud to say we’re still growing, still dreaming big and still picking up awards (including national titles) along the way.
When people hear “Interior Design,” they often think of cushions and colour swatches, but it’s so much more than that! Real interior design is architectural at its core. We’re talking layout planning, lighting, plumbing, electrical – everything that shapes how a home works and feels. We design with the whole house in mind, but we’re also totally happy to work on single-room projects like kitchens, bathrooms or laundries too

With the design process, which part is your favourite part?
That’s such a tricky one: because we truly love every stage of the process! Right from the start, we enjoy getting to know our clients on a personal level It’s not just about the bricks and mortar; it’s about how you live, what you value, and what kind of lifestyle you’re dreaming of, both now and into the future.
Once we understand the challenges of your current space and your design style, that’s when the real fun begins. This is the dreaming phase: where we reimagine what’s possible. We might flip a floorplan, open up spaces, or rethink how rooms are used entirely. Seeing clients light up when they realise what’s achievable under their own roof? That never gets old.
Next comes the selections stage, where the vision starts to come to life. In our designer showroom, we’ve curated a stunning range of tiles, tapware, stone, hardware, rugs and more –from all over the world. Instead of running all over town from one store to the next, our clients get a one-stop-shop experience. We lay everything out in one place so you can see how it all works together, right down to the finest detail Then it’s construction time! This is where all that planning turns into something real Our Design Management Service means we’re working closely with the builder and trades to make sure every decision makes sense, because a home should look amazing and work effortlessly There’s no point having a beautiful kitchen if you can’t move around it easily, right? And finally: handover day Walking through the finished home with our clients is always a highlight Seeing their reactions, the excitement, the joy: it’s what we live for Knowing they get to enjoy this space every day makes all the hard work more than worth it
Favourite room to design and why?
This one’s also tricky: so many rooms bring us so much satisfaction! There’s the laundry that transforms from a dark, forgotten corner into a bright, functional haven. The kitchen that gets a major upgrade with a butler’s pantry, completely changing how it works day-to-day. And of course, the powder room: that little space with BIG wow factor.
But if we had to choose? The primary suite is a definite favourite.
There’s something incredibly rewarding about turning a cramped, underwhelming main bedroom into a luxurious, functional retreat. We love reimagining these spaces to include not just the bedroom itself, but also a stunning ensuite and a well-designed walk-in robe, creating a true suite experience. Thanks to modern design and the influence of high-end hotels, the way we think about bedrooms has completely shifted Gone are the days of a simple square room with a bed, a dresser, and if you were lucky, an ensuite tacked on the side
We’re here to say: you can absolutely have more. Imagine coming home to a thoughtfully designed primary suite that feels like your own private getaway. No need to book a night at a boutique hotel: your everyday can feel that luxurious. Our bedroom suite designs look at the whole picture: the sleeping zone, ensuite, robe, and how they all flow together. With clever spatial planning and custom details, we create open, functional layouts that feel spacious, restful, and effortlessly stylish. Once you have a bedroom like this… you may never want to leave.
What Spring trends are you predicting for 2025?
One of the biggest surprises we’ve seen in kitchen design lately? Colour is back, and in a big way. After years of all-white everything, we’re now seeing bold cabinetry in deep forest greens, rich navy blues, burnt oranges, even black and burgundy. It’s dramatic, it’s moody, and it’s absolutely stunning: especially when paired with mixed metals and natural stone
What’s surprising is how quickly this trend has taken off, considering it’s a pretty bold choice. Painted cabinetry isn’t something you redo on a whim! But this shift tells us something important: people are designing for themselves now, not just for resale. And we love that. In bathrooms, one trend that’s quietly making waves? The ceiling! Yep, designers are treating the ceiling as a “fifth wall,” using bold paint, wallpaper, or even tiling to turn it into a real feature It adds depth and character, especially in a space that’s often overlooked
Looking ahead to Spring 2025, the mood is all about rich, expressive design Minimalist timber and plain benchtops are giving way to dramatic marbles, patterned stone, mosaic tiles, and layered details It’s about creating moments, spaces that feel personal, bold, and full of character And yes, bathrooms are joining in too Even though they’re often smaller, we’re seeing a lot more thought go into layout, colour and texture Designers are taking tiles right up the wall, mixing finishes, and playing with shapes and levels to make every inch count

Spring and summer are the perfect excuse to refresh your home and breathe some new life into your spaces! As the days get longer and the weather warms up, here are some of our favourite ways to help your home feel lighter, brighter, and ready for the season ahead:
1. Spring Clean & Store Smart
First thing’s first: pack away anything that screams winter. Heavy blankets, heaters, coats… they can all be tucked away. Good storage is key, especially in busy family homes and apartments. Make sure your linen cupboard, laundry and mudroom are all working hard for you. We love clever solutions like Magic Corners to maximise those tricky, underused spots. And remember: less is more! Keep things light and clutter-free for that breezy spring feel.

On an exciting note, Birdblack is thrilled to be heading to Adelaide in mid-August for the prestigious KBDi Awards! The Kitchen and Bathroom Design Institute of Australia (KBDi) hosts this annual celebration, recognising outstanding achievements in Kitchen and Bathroom design and more Awards are presented for the best projects in each state as well as the coveted national titles Over the past two years, Birdblack has achieved remarkable success at these ceremonies, taking home multiple accolades. Now, we are aiming for a thrilling three-in-a-row.
From a business perspective, Birdblack operates with a dynamic and diverse portfolio, typically managing around 30 projects at any given time. Each job varies in scale and scope, and all are at different stages of the design journey. Our work spans full home renovations and brand-new builds to bespoke designs for individual rooms, including kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries. In addition, we specialise in creating custom joinery and storage solutions, ensuring our clients’ homes are not only beautiful but highly functional
